There are plenty of web browsers for us to choose from. The fact that are plenty is a web site designers nightmare because mostly none of them truly follow the defined standards properly, they all add things, they all do it slightly different. Viewing a web site in a browser that doesn’t render the web site correctly can be annoying or downright painful, it may mean the site is unusable.

Web site designers employee as many tricks as they do good design practices to deal with this and still they can be beaten, how many people are still using Internet Explorer 6 and for how much longer?

In my work I spend quite a lot of time using different browsers, so I have Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.5, Google Chrome and Opera all installed on my Windows desktop.

However, I don’t just use Windows, I also use linux. My Ubuntu 9.10 desktop comes with Firefox as the  default. I also have a netbook, which now runs Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10, thats Firefox too. Then there’s my PDA/Cell phone, a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, this has Windows Mobile 6.1 and comes with both Internet Explorer and Opera Mobile. Then there is my other cell phone, a little Nokia 6210 Navigator, that runs S60.

What I need is some continuity, a browser that, broadly speaking, is the same on all platforms. One that can be my browser of choice, the default, no matter which device I’m using and will, more or less, work the same, render the same (within the confines of the device, of course) and not be an annoyance to use.

You would think that my requirement shouldn’t be that big a deal, right? Well it is.

What if we dropped the pda/cell phones off the requirement? Well it doesn’t really help that much, our choice is pretty much Firefox. Google Chrome could be used but its not officially available on linux yet and besides I don’t want to drop my pda/cell phones from the requirement. I do accept that my requirement may be a minority request though.

So here is the requirement

• Must be able to download and install easily, no messing about with source, compiling, etc.
• Must support Windows Vista and Windows 7
• Must support Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10
• Must support Windows Mobile 6.1 on Sony Ericsson Xperia X1
• Must support S60 on Nokia 6210 Navigator
• Must render the sites I use in a usable manner
• Ideally share a common ‘cloud’ of bookmarks
• Nice if it handled email
• It MUST work, browsing should be an easy experience, not a chore.

Who are the candidates? I checked on wikipedia and this list seems to be

• Internet Explorer
• Safari
• Opera
• Chrome
• SeaMonkey
• Camino

Now this is just part of the whole list, trust me (or don’t and go look for yourself) there are a lot of browsers out there.

It doesn’t take long to whittle that lot down to one, in fact the only one that can support my requirement (and more besides). Opera seems to support almost everything out there in one of its forms, everything except the iPhone.

I’ve been using it now for the last 12 months or so and I am impressed, hell its even the browser on the Kid’s Nintendo Wii. In every day use I’ve had no real problems but I do come across the odd site that doesn’t want to render quite right, this is more to do with the site than the browser, however that means a switch to one of the others. Typically this is so rare that its not an issue, in fact its just as likely to occur with any of the browsers. Sometimes its more an issue of linux not supporting all of the rich web media as well as it could in most cases.

Opera also has Opera Link, this is a portal system that allows you to, among many other things, synchronize your bookmarks to a single account and share that account on each device. This means if I update a bookmark or a start page on my linux desktop when I come to log in on my Windows desktop the same change is there. This feature alone makes life so much easier, if it ever extends to the mobile version as well it will be fantastic.

Would I stop and use something else? Of course, if something else comes along and is better I will use it. This is about getting what I need from the browser, my requirement is what is important, not the tool used to deliver it.

I am working on a project where I am dealing with cookies a lot. Before this toolbar I had to go to the options menu and click  clear all data button to clear all the cookies and cache.I saw this tool on my bosses laptop and found that its much easier to clear the cookies from the toolbar. He send me the link for this toolbar and extension for Firefox.

You’ll be amazed as how many features this extension has.

Ez jó hír. A SeaMonkey ugyanis a régi Mozilla Suite utódja. Ez még a régi (nem-)biznisz, itt még érezni az alapítványi hátteret, ez még az .org-os nem a .com-os Mozilla.

Suite-hoz illően benne van a böngésző, a levelező, a html-
szerkesztő és a chat is. És minden platformra (Win, Mac, Lx). Windowson el is kezdtem állandóra használni.

Bah, Monyet Laut! Apa pun pula itu?

Hehehe, Monyet Laut adalah peramban. Peramban yang dikembangkan oleh pengembang yang sama dengan Rubah Api, yaitu Mozilla.org.

Monyet Laut, Kang Kombor asal aja menerjemahkan nama aslinya, Seamonkey, ke Bahasa Indonesia.

Kang Kombor menginstal moyet laut untuk diperbandingkan dengan rubah api yang sudah terinstal di karmic. Kang Kombor merasakan rubah api kadang-kadang berat banget berjalan di atas karmic Kang Kombor yang hanya punya memori 64MB. Apalagi kalau rubah api jalan bareng chromium, weeehhh… jadi bengong si karmic. Macam orang melihat Aura Kasih pamer celana dalam, langsung aja nggak bisa ngapa-ngapain selain melongo dengan mulut mangap.

Moyet Laut tersedia di sofware center karmic. Hanya saja, setelah diinstal dan diluncurkan, itu Si Monyet Laut bilang kalau Kang Kombor memakai versi stabil yang lama (old stable version). Kang Kombor ditawari untuk download versi yang terbaru. Kang Kombor sudah download file berekstensi bz2 itu tetapi Archive Manager tidak mampu membuka file bz2 itu. Ya sudah, pakai versi lama saja.

Monyet Laut ini nampaknya dibangun berdasarkan engine Netscape Navigator. Kang Kombor bilang nampaknya karena Kang Kombor hanya melihat gambar kemudi kapal di pojok kiri atas dan pojok kiri bawah jendela Monyet Laut. Gambar kemudi kapal yang dibawah apabila ditunjuk dengan kursor tetikus akan memunculkan snippet bertuliskan Navigator. Nah, tambah pas kan dengan Netscape Navigator yang dulu pernah menjadi peramban alternatif yang beradu kepala alias head to head dengan Internet Explorer.

Ternyata Monyet Laut ini lumayan juga. Add ons untuk Monyet Laut ini sudah banyak juga. Mungkin karena sama-sama dikembangkan oleh Mozilla sehingga add ons untuk Rubah Api mudah disesuaikan ke Monyet Laut ini. Add on yang menjadi favorit Kang Kombor adalah Alexa Sparky. Add on yang dapat menampilkan Alexa Ranks dari website yang sedang kita kunjungi. Selain itu, SEO Quake juga merupakan add on favorit Kang Kombor. Yang belum ketemu adalah Google Toolbar untuk Monyet Laut.

Eh… tapi ada sayangnya, ketika coba instal add on, ternyata tidak berhasil. Katanya installation script tidak tersedia. Padahal, Monyet Laut sudah mengunduh file berekstensi xpi yang merupakan file instalasi add on-nya.

Untuk kinerja, Monyet Laut lumayan ringan. Saat nulis ini Kang Kombor membuka Bilbo, Chromium, Monyet Laut dan Gimp. Ternyata karmic belum bengong juga. Okelah, bisa buat alternatif kalau hanya untuk internet surfing. Kalau sedang butuh melihat AR dan PR ya terpaksa memecut Ruba Api agar segera meluncur dan menunjukkan AR dan PR.

Sedang burem dengan cicak dan buaya yang istilahnya mengganggu Tuan Presiden, so, Kang Kombor menulis soal Monyet Laut ini saja. Sapa juga dooloo yang pertama memunculkan istilah cecak dan bajul itu.

Nachdem ich nun die ganze Woche nicht in Deutschland war und auch leider nur wenig (eigentlich gar nicht ) bloggen konnte, bin ich nun wieder da. Diesmal mit einer Empfehlung für ein nützliches Firefox Browser-Plugin: Das NoScript Plugin. 

Das NoScript Plugin sorgt für mehr Sicherheit und läuft mitallen Mozilla-Browsern, also Firefox, Seamonkey, Flock usw.

Wie der Name schon vermuten lässt, sorgt das Script dafür, dass Scripte auf Webseiten nicht bzw. nur so ausgeführt werden, wie wir (die User) es gerne hätten. Da immer mehr Webangebote auftauchen, die irgendwelche User mittels JavaScript u.ä. aushorchen oder schädigen, ist dieses Plugin meiner Meinung nach extrem wichtig geworden.

Als Voreinstellung werden ersteinmal alle Scripte blockiert (z.B. JavaScript, Java, Flash, …). Man kann sich jedoch auch eine Whitelist anlegen und darin alle Seiten aufführen, denen man vertraut. Auf diesen “Whitlist-Seiten” werden die Scripte dann natürlich ausgeführt.

Wer auf eine Seite kommt, die blockierte Scripte enthält, bekommt das angezeigt. Durch einen Klick auf den blockierten Seitenbereich wird das jeweilige Script dann auch auf “Nicht-Whitelist-Seiten” ausgeführt.

Das Plugin ist selbstverständlich kostenfrei aus dem Netz herunter zu laden. Mehr Informationen und den Download gibt es auf:

Para guardar las contraseñas de forma automática en el navegador, sin que nos aparezca la barra preguntándonos qué hacer: “Recordar”. “Nunca para este sitio”, “No ahora”, tendríamos que seguir los siguientes pasos.

Abrimos la carpeta en donde se encuentre el archivo  ~/components/nsLoginManagerPrompter.js correspondiente al navegador Firefox, Flock, IceCat… Si no estáis seguros de su ubicación podéis usar el buscador de archivos:

Entramos en el archivo con privilegios de administrador, ya que la modificación afecta al aspecto de la privacidad en el navegador, ya que guarda contraseñas sin preguntarle previamente al usuario del navegador.

En el siguiente ejemplo editaré la ruta con ese directorio ya que mi arquitectura es de 64 bits, así que cambiadla por la que corresponda, ya que el buscador de archivos (como viene en la captura),  os marcará la ruta en cada caso.

Quedando los cambios tal y como muestro en la captura:

Lógicamente si el programa se encuentra dentro de un paquete y este se actualiza vía repositorios,  los datos que hemos modificado se perderán, para volver a la configuración original.

Finalmente si queremos acceder a las contraseñas seguiremos la ruta en Linux de Editar–> Preferencias–> Privacidad–> Contraseñas Guardadas. En este punto siempre he aconsejado utilizar la contraseña maestra cuyo acceso está en la propia ruta antes descrita, ya que así evitaremos que sean vistas por ojos indiscretos, puesto que las contraseñas se encuentran encriptadas en la carpeta del perfil.

1. Przechodzimy na stronę Mozilli z pluginem Stylish.
2. Instalujemy ten plugin poprzez kliknięcie w button “Pobierz”.
3. Teraz w SeaMonkey wybieramy z menu “Narzędzia” opcję “Dodatki”.
W nowo otwartym oknie Dodatki przechodzimy do zakładki “Style” i klikamy na button “Stwórz nowy styl” w prawej dolnej części okienka.
4. Teraz w oknie “Nowy styl” ustawiamy nazwę i etykietę “antysledzik”, a do dużego formularza przepisujemy poniższy kod:

3. W pierwszej linijce pliku “userContent.css” dodajemy

SeaMonkey es la digna sucesora de la suite Mozilla Suite, en ella podremos encontrar un editor HTML, un cliente de grupos de noticias, un cliente de chat IRC, DOM inspector, Grippies para esconder/mostrar las barras de herramientas y un gestor de correo aparte del navegador al uso, con una muy óptima integración en su conjunto y varias extensiones disponibles.

Recientemente ha salido la versión 2.0 cargada de interesantes novedades y otras largamente esperadas como el gestor de complementos. Al compartir varias características con su hermano Firefox 3.5.4 nos ofrece poder ver vídeos con el formato HTML5.

Para los que instalaseis Seamonkey 2.x siguiendo las instrucciones en este blog, os aconsejo que desistaléis previamente la versión que tuvieseis. No hay por qué preocuparse ya que los datos del perfil (marcadores, historial, cookies, contraseñas) se mantendrán.

Instalación de Seamonkey 2.0.

Nos descargamos el descomprimible tar.bz2 correspondiente a nuestro idioma desde la columna de linux. Como novedad, además de la habitual traducción del  español de España (es-ES), se incluye la traducción del español de Argentina (es-AR)

Abrimos la terminal y nos logueamos como root:

su -

Nos dirigimos hacia el sitio donde descargamos el archivo, si es que no estamos situados ya desde la consola con el comando cd (espacio) ruta a seguir. En mi caso me lo descargué en /home/noctuido, así pues me dirijo hacia ese directorio (cada uno debe saber dónde lo descargó):

 # cd /home/noctuido

Ahora descomprimimos el archivo en /opt que es donde normalmente instalo los programas no provinientes de los repositorios.

# tar -C /opt -vxjpf seamonkey-2.0.tar.bz2

Creamos un enlace simbólico hacia /usr

# ln -s /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey /usr/bin/seamonkey

Creamos y editamos Seamonkey.desktop con cualquier editor (en el caso del ejemplo gedit):

# gedit /usr/share/applications/Seamonkey.desktop

Y pegamos lo siguiente:

Ya disponemos del acceso a la suite Seamonkey desde los siguientes menús:

Menú de KDE “Kickoff”: Menú K–> Applications–> Internet–> SeaMonkey Web Browser.

Menú Gnome: Aplicaciones–> Internet–> SeaMonkey

Por supuesto podemos arrastrar el acceso a las barras de herramientas o al escritorio, así como acceder desde el el atajo de teclado Alt+F2 o desde la terminal después de poner seamonkey+Enter.

En el caso de que tuviesemos instalada una versión anterior de Seamonkey, esta tomará el perfil que ya tuviesemos, con los mismos datos intactos.

En esta ocasión solucionan el exceso de filtrado en las páginas de las webs de Libertad Digital y Yahoo!

Los filtros nauscópicos están pensados para bloquear la publicidad de en las páginas web, se adaptan de forma idónea en los navegadores K-meleon y Firefox y a todos los que llevan el motor Gecko (Flock, Seamonkey, IceCat, Swiftwesasl…), a través de la extensión Adblock Plus. Una vez instalada la extensión, solo es necesario reiniciar el navegador y agregar estos muy buenos filtros, pues están dirigidos a bloquear más especialmente webs hispanas.

Ya he hablado de la forma de bloquear la publicidad en varios navegadores, pero la gestión que hace Adblock Plus me parece de las mejores y más interesantes, ya que permite discriminar sitios con listas blancas,  o de forma temporal. Así mismo podemos potenciar esta extensión con el complemento Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper, una vez instalada,   desde la flechita negra que aparece al lado del icono de ABP–> Seleccionar el elemento a ocultar, y con el puntero del ratón escojo lo que yo quiera–> Añadir filtro, y sin tener que recurrir a los filtros personalizados.

Recientemente ha salido la versión definitiva de Seamonkey 2.0 con novedades que podéis ver en Mozilla-Hispano. Para los que no hayáis usado Seamonkey deciros que es la heredera de Mozilla Suite que a su vez tomó la base de Netscape Comunicator. Contiene un navegador con el mismo motor Gecko de Firefox 3.5.4, un gestor de correo al que se le puede añadir el calendario Lightning ( de momento la versión en desarrollo), un editor HTML, conexión al chat mediante el protocólo IRC y grupos de noticias.

Si ya instalasteis Seamonkey con alguna de mis guías, antes de proceder a la instalación, debéis eliminar la anterior versión de Seamonkey antes de iniciar la instalación, así pues abréis la consola y pegáis las siguientes líneas:

sudo rm /usr/bin/seamonkey
sudo rm /usr/share/applications/Seamonkey.desktop
sudo rm -rf /opt/seamonkey

Instalación.

Descargamos Seamonkey  2.0  correspondiente a nuestra distribución (en el caso de este ejemplo Linux)  y al idioma que escojamos.

Descomprimimos el contenido del archivo en /opt:

sudo tar -C /opt -vxjpf seamonkey-2.0.tar.bz2

Hacemos un enlace enlace simbólico:

sudo ln -s /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey /usr/bin/seamonkey

Editamos los accesos y caractererísticas de Seamonkey:

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/Seamonkey.desktop

Pegamos lo siguiente dentro del editor:

Guardamos los cambios en el editor.

Una vez instalado con éxito, podemos eliminar el archivo tar.bz2 que nos descargamos desde internet.

Ya disponemos del acceso a la suite Seamonkey desde los siguientes menús:

Menú de KDE “Kickoff”: Menú K–> Applications–> Internet–> SeaMonkey Web Browser.

Menú Gnome: Aplicaciones–> Internet–> SeaMonkey

Por supuesto podemos arrastrar el acceso a las barras de herramientas o al escritorio, así como acceder desde el el atajo de teclado Alt+F2 o desde la terminal después de poner seamonkey+Enter.

En el caso de que tuviesemos instalada una versión anterior de Seamonkey, esta tomará el perfil que ya tuviesemos, con lo que nos encontraremos con los mismos marcadores, historial, cookies y contraseñas si las tuviesemos guardadas.
