This movie is a real jewel. I ran into it for chance because it’s not so famous and it was a good discover. It has an innovative perspective and a good introspection. It’s worth it!

PROZAC NATION (2001)

Another movie not so known. On the whole I liked the movie, but sometimes some scenes are too long… in my opinion. It’s a good portrait of a strange feeling/condition… depression. Christina Ricci is an amazing actress..

Cashback (2006) This is Sean Ellis’s Academy Award nominated shortfilm Cashback expanded into

Cashback (2006)

This is Sean Ellis’s Academy Award nominated shortfilm Cashback expanded into a feature film. Cashback is a comedy first and foremost, and it is about an art school student and aspiring artist named Ben (Sean Biggerstaff), who recently suffered a breakup with his girlfriend of several years. Because of the break up Ben cannot sleep for over the course of several weeks and this is the time period of Ben’s life that we see in Cashback, and he narrates for us. Ben gets a job at a grocery store to pass his time. He often imagines stopping time completely and creating his still life art. In fact, as the film goes one we begin to wonder if he really can stop time or not. Soon Ben begins to fall for a clerk named Sharon (Emilia Fox) and his episodic insomnia gets resolved.

Cashback is rich with great characters and some hilarious moments. Ben is dry enough to fittingly suffer through his many experiences, all the while his flat reactions to these other brighter characters is comedic in and of itself. Ben’s friend from childhood Shaun (Sean Higgins) is an amusing womanizer who seems completely at peace with the fact that most women will harshly reject his obnoxious advances. Ben’s boss Jenkins (Stuart Goodwin) is an absurdly arrogant person that also seems entirely undaunted by his failures to pursue Sharon, or even win a football game against a competing grocery store. Barry and Matt (Michael Dixon and Michael Lambourne) are two colleagues of Ben’s who are constantly being ridiculously mischievous and make for some of the film’s best laughs. Another colleague of Ben’s is Brian (Marc Pickering) whose kung-fu training defines him as a person. This is obviously a character-driven comedy, but it is the development of these characters that makes the more subdued drama work to its advantage.

Sean Biggerstaff and Emilia Fox

Yummy Keeley Hazell

The short film, which is on this DVD as well, is basically comprised of the scene in the film where we first meet and establish these colorful characters. It is the most engaging part of the movie. The only difference between the segment in the short film and the long version is that the long version is slightly edited for sexual content. I found it strange that in the short film all the girl’s are clean shaven but in the long version they suddenly have pubic hair. Nevertheless, the feature film sliding by the MPAA with just an R-rating is still a wonderful surprise. The standards have seemingly changed and perhaps the MPAA sees nudity as more pleasing to the eyeballs, as opposed to seeing someone’s eyeballs being torn out of their head with pliers. No matter, you get both versions with this DVD and the film’s primary function isn’t as a skin flick to begin with. It is actually sort of disappointing to hear about all the nude scenes anytime I hear about this movie, although it would be silly not to point out that the nudity involves some of the most beautiful women in the world (e.g. Hayley Marie Coppin, Irene Bagach, Keeley Hazell).

Feature (left) and shortfilm (right) pubic hair comparison

I’ve heard that director Sean Ellis is working on a horror film next with Lena Headey. That has me curious because Ellis shows more technical ability in Cashback than we are used to seeing in most comedies and I believe he has given me reason to look out for his next project. Cashback is both more entertaining and more vulgar than most comedies out there and it deserves credit for that. It doesn’t seem to be getting the exposure I think the film warrants as it is probably very accessible to an American audience. I hope it catches on as I enjoyed it very much.

My rating is 4 out of 5 stars.

Fun times! The last recording session with our voice actors Cora Bissett and Sean Biggerstaff was on

Fun times! The last recording session with our voice actors Cora Bissett and Sean Biggerstaff was on Sunday. For once, Cora didn’t have to do a million mad voices – she was simply (and beautifully) Aileen Adler.

Sean, on the other paw, had the challenge of putting a voice to the thoughts of Watson. “Urbane gentleman spy” was an option for a while… and led inevitably to “Bond, Sean Bond” and much hilarity. The final voice is neither of those, but is a glorious big voice for a small but important dog. You’ll have to wait until Friday to hear it.

L-R: Helen Jackson, Adam Brewster, Cora Bissett, Sean Biggerstaff and Stephen Gilmour

At lunch afterwards it emerged that Sean is a great fan of Pimms, so we celebrated with a jug or two of Pimms and lemonade. It’s appropriate, then, that the popular vote has decided that Pimms is the drink of choice for Aileen and Kyle (thanks Kiwi for the suggestion, and thanks DJ for letting us know the Sheep Heid Inn can “rustle up a fantastic classic Pimms No 1″.)

We also have a decision for a book to feature in the last episode – it will then be BookCrossed in the Sheep Heid, so if you’re in Duddingston this coming weekend you might want to pop in and see if you can pick it up. The winning suggestion is another one of Kiwi’s, seconded by Treehugger – The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. Watson’s grabbed it already; it’s one of his favourites.

The good, but slightly sad, news is that you’ve now made all the decisions needed for us to finish the final episode of The Lost Book. Instead of a story poll, I’ve resurrected our character popularity survey. Who’s your favourite character? Vote now in the sidebar poll to the right.

Also den ersten Teil sehen.
Weg damit!
Eindeutig.
-rrr-

xD

Kleiner Teaser:
Den Rest gibt’s hier zu sehen.

Vielleicht folgen noch welche von Sean Biggerstaff (Oliver Wood) und Christian Coulson (Tom Riddle aus dem 2. Teil).
Mal sehen (:

Ben Willis (Biggerstaff) is an art student, and after a painful breakup, Ben develops insomnia. With his new found time, he decides to work the night shift at a local supermarket. The night shift workers are a quirky bunch and while some pass time with antics, Ben imagines that time freezes which allows him to see the beauty in life and in people.

“Cashback” was originally a short film which was turned into a feature film due to its success as a short film. It won 14 awards at international film festivals and was also nominated for an Academy Award in 2006. I really enjoyed this film. It was very artistic and the ensemble cast were great. The cast includes Sean Biggerstaff from the “Harry Potter” series, Emilia Fox, and Michelle Ryan (“Bionic Woman”).

Watching this film is like the feeling and memories you get when you see a picture just before it was captured. I think the underlying message of this film is very true. Even though life can get crazy sometimes, you have to be able to slow down and appreciate the beauty in the life and the people around you. I would definitely recommend renting it if you haven’t seen it. It was heartfelt, funny, and honest. I give this movie 4 stars!

It’s been decided that episode 6 will use a voiceover narration to tell the story of what happens next (we held a vote and 67% voted for this).

We need to decide which characters will be the narrators. For more information about the characters, look at the Cast and Story page. Rather than sticking to a single narrator, let’s have one female and one male character – it’d be a shame if one of our brilliant voice actors had nothing to do!

So, we’ve put two polls in the sidebar on the right. We’ve included everyone – even baddie Beryl Potts (her viewpoint might be interesting!), Watson the dog (an internal monologue as he can’t speak), and Voiceover Man (he’s been showing flashes of personality).

Who would you like to narrate the final episode of The Lost Book? Vote now!

It was all a blur. Not only did we dash off the script in record quick time, we nearly melted on the way over to Glasgow for the recording session.

As always, we had some new characters and new accents for Cora and Sean to deal with. Cora brought Professor Remi to life with a lovely francophone lilt. Sean provided a suitably thuggish henchman on top of his usual duties. For the first time ever Sean didn’t need to mention “Aileen” which meant we didn’t get to fall about in stitches when he mispronounced it – maybe next time Sean. Of course, Stephen was keeping cool at the control desk, despite the balmy weather.

Everyone was very focused – something to do with wanting to get back out in the sun, I think – and it wasn’t long before we all agreed it was done. In fact, just one more of these sessions to go and the whole series will be done. Thanks again guys for turning out on such a hot, sunny Sunday – you deserve lots of ice cream!

You’ve made the last decision that needs to go into the episode 5 script: Professor Remi appears to be a woman much younger than her seventy-eight years (53% of the vote).

We’re recording this afternoon, so here’s the finished script! The storyboards aren’t yet finished – this is a sneak preview of the first three shots. The rest will follow during the week, and I’ll also post the traditional “plotting the episode” blog to tell you the story of how episode 5 developed.

Think of us (Helen and Adam from Binary Fable, Stephen the sound designer, Cora and Sean) this afternoon, shut up in the recording studio while you enjoy the sun.

(Oh, and I don’t think I’ve mentioned script formatting for a while. There’s a standard format used for screenplays, where each scene is introduced by a “slugline” that describes the location and time of day. To find out more, the BBC Writers Room has an information page with PDF examples of a range of script formats. There isn’t yet a standard for “web series” (!) so we’re using the format we would use for a short film.)

The treasure hunt is over now – but, yesterday (24 July 2009) we launched the sixth and final episode of The Lost Book. Watch it now and enjoy Sean’s brilliant voice performance.

Oh, and have you seen our interview with Sean?

Ahoy, me hearties! We’ve hidden the booty and it time ye got a-huntin’…

Here’s how it works. Two pairs of tickets to the SCO’s Bass Notes concerts have been hidden in two books: one in Edinburgh and one in Glasgow. To win book and tickets, all you have to do is find them!

We’re going to give two clues for each city. The first will send you to the correct location. The second, once you’ve got to the right place, will tell you exactly where you’ll find a bright green Scottish Chamber Orchestra envelope. Once you have the envelope, take it to a member of staff who will give you your free book. The tickets are tucked inside.

It really is that easy! So… check out the clues:

Edinburgh clue – thanks to Su-a Lee, cellist with the SCO.

Glasgow clue – thanks to Alison Mitchell, the SCO’s Principal Flute.

And, if you’re our winner, please let us know! Go to www.BookCrossing.com, enter the BCID number you’ll find on the inside front cover of the book, and leave us a message so that we know the book and tickets are safe with you.

Update: both the Edinburgh and Glasgow prizes have been found.

Yesterday we were hearing voices, many different ones. Cora and Sean had to record lines in no less than seven different voices between them. They won’t mind me telling you that there were some nervous looks exchanged when we introduced the script at the start of the session. But, as we knew they would, they breezed through it with their trademark flair and vocal agility, and finished in record time – thank guys!

As always, Stephen was on top form and did well to keep up. We noticed too that a new piece of sound recording kit had appeared among his array of gadgets – lots of knobs and dials and stuff, all very impressive.

done<ins style='text-decoration:none;'>

</ins>

So episode 4 voices are in the can and we’ll be putting the animatic together over the next wee while so you’ll soon be able to listen to the dulcet, if not slightly chilling, tones of Beryl Potts and Otto Dafe.

Preferata mea, dintre toate, este She, a trupei Grand Avenue.

Hello all! My name is Mike, and I’m new here, so nice to meet all of you!

I generally don’t dabble with the movie scene, but as an avid viewer, I decided to partake on this journey with you all.

All I ask is that you be gentle, as I said, I am new with all of this. With that said, comment freely and critically on my reviews. I try to be honest and I want the same from you. It’s the only way we get better at what we do!

So, without further adu:

I decided to peel back a few years ago to 2006, and grabbed this little surprise that I recently ran over about an artist, his heartbreak and how his world came crashing to a hault, literally!

Ben Willis (Sean Biggerstaff) is in a load of trouble. How is an art student with a broken heart and insomnia supposed to cope with the hazards of loneliness and depression?

After breaking up with his girlfriend, Ben suddenly finds himself unable to sleep and wondering, “what do I do with an extra eight hours on my hands?” In the nightly hours as his body becomes restless and his mind unable to release the image of his screaming girlfriend.

With the thoughts of his ex- racing through his mind, Ben decides to start working for a supermarket on the night shift, where he spends eight hours counting away the minutes with a cast of quirky characters, each having learned how to pass the time(including some spectacular scooter races down aisle 6).

Ben learns to use his artistic imagination to stop time. With the blink of an eye the people around him freeze, and he is able to study the curves and beauty that lies within everyone. But particularly he takes to a cute checkout girl, Sharon (Emilia Fox), who may unlock the secret to Ben’s insomnia.

(Spoiler alert, don’t wanna read, turn away now!)

Okay, so the ending is predictable, the two end up together. But the way Ben is able to blow her mind is potentially on the edge of amazing and creepy. But look, the guy is able to freeze time, and being an artist, he has always been blown away by the female form (seeing a Swedish exchange student who was nothing if not modest). So he is able to sketch and capture those he has stopped in time and bring their beauty to life on canvas. You may think this is creepy and stalkerish, but he was able to bring beauty out from the lines and surfaces of each model.

This movie has a subtlety to it, and an inner beauty I really looked for. I has read some reviews saying both good and bad things about this movie, and I was intrigued and trust me I was not disappointed. There lies a connection with Ben as most have gone through an emotional time like a break up, and we’ve all wanted to curl up and disappear from the world. That’s what Ben did, and director/writer Sean Ellis was able to portray it to a T!

For more of the plot, visit http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460740/ .

I would recommend everyone that is old enough to handle mature scenes (nudity, language, the movie is rated R) should watch this movie twice (the second time to get the real feeling for all those subtle things I mentioned).

Rating: 4 stars!

So get on it!
