I have a bad feeling about this one…

Despues de ver el trailer no sabia si llora, vomitar o sentir pena por semejante pedazo de popo que hicieron, la saga The King of Fighters es una de las mas importantes en el genero de las peleas, lo cual a los realizadores de la movie no les importo. Realmente no se qué esperar de algo así, por lo visto en el video, Ray Park (Snake Eyes en G.I. JOE) parece ser el malo de la película, échenle un ojo y dejen sus comentarios sobre sus expectativas de este filme, siéntanse libres de expresar lo primero que se les venga a la mente al terminar de ver el trailer.

The King of Fighters flick will see the franchise getting a science fiction angle (something not found in the games, at least to my knowledge) as revealed in this quote from the MovieSet:

It also looks like the King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power. As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe’s native defenders, while the force that brought them seeks to find a way to invade and infect our world. Hmm, doesn’t seem very faithful to the games to me, eh.

Naturally the game is based on the long-running “The King of Fighters” franchise of fighting games by SNK Playmore. A series which is on it’s 12th core entry with The King of Fighters XII and has spawned a whopping 13 spin-off games. To put that into perspective, the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter franchises are still in single digits (Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is the 8th MK game while Street Fighter is on it’s fourth CORE entry with Street Fighter IV, even though there’s been tons of spin-offs and re-releases).

The King of Fighters movie began filming in Vancouver, Canada on November 27th. It’s being directed by Gordon

Chan, a dynamic Hong-Kong-born director who is known for films like Fist of legend, Beast Cop and Jackie Chan’s 2003 flick The Medallion. The screenplay is by newcomer Rita Augustine.

As far as actors are concerned, The King of Fighters will star Maggie Q (Live Free and Die Hard), Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), Francoise Yip (Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem), Monique Ganderton (Supernatural) and Ray Park, best known for his portrayal as Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Producing the movie will be Joseph Chou (Appleseed: Ex Machina), Tim Kwok (Wicked City) and Bobby Sheng. The picture is being jointly financed by Japanese production and rights management group Micott & Basara and Australian-U.S. sales agent Arclight/Easternlight.

Press Release from the Saturn Awards – 6/29/09

It was a stellar evening for “The Dark Knight” as the Christopher Nolan film garnered five Saturn Awards at the 35th Annual Saturn Awards. The film was named Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film. The Warner Bros. release also received awards for Best Writing: Christopher Nolan & Jonathan Nolan, Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, Best Music: Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, and Best Special Effects.

Also receiving multiple Saturn Awards were “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Iron Man” which won three Saturn Awards apiece.

“Battlestar Galactica” proved to be the most decorated series of the evening with three Saturn Awards including Best Syndicated/Cable Television Series, Best Actor on Television: Edward James Olmos, and Best Actress on Television: Mary McDonnell. “Lost” received the Saturn Award for Best Network Series. Show co-creator, J.J. Abrams accepted the award on stage.

The highlight at the awards ceremony were the special awards presented throughout the evening. Actor Lance Henriksen received the Life Career Award for his strong body of work in film and television. Actor Ed Harris presented the award to Henriksen on stage.

DreamWorks Animation studio head, Jeffrey Katzenberg, was awarded the inaugural Visionary Award for his efforts in advancing 3D film presentation. Top filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer presented this prestigious award to Mr. Katzenberg at the event.

Genre icon Leonard Nimoy was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in film and television which covers five decades. Mostly known for his portrayal of the Vulcan, Mr. Spock, Leonard’s accomplishment extend to many more projects including the series, Mission Impossible, Columbo, and the recent show, Fringe. Presenting the award was top filmmaker J.J. Abrams, who recently directed the hit film, Star Trek, for Paramount Pictures.

Many genre leaders were in attendance including: Michael Emerson and Mark Pellegrino (from Lost), Zachary Levi, Justin Hartley, Kevin Feige, Jack Coleman, Cristine Rose and Adrian Pasdar (from Heroes), Scott Porter, Ann Robinson, Sean Faris, Carlos Bernard (24), Kristin Bell, Andrea Roth, Casper Van Dien, Kevin Sorbo, Jim Parsons & Simon Helberg (from The Big Bang Theory), Larry Cohen, Frank Darabont, Greg Cannom, Michael Biehn, Jennifer Carpenter, Dean Devlin, Edward James Olmos, Tom DeSanto, Vince Gilligan, Aaron Paul (from Breaking Bad), James Newton Howard, and Hans Zimmer. The 35th Annual Saturn Awards were presented by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, a non-profit organization created in 1972 to honor, recognize and promote genre entertainment. The Academy was founded by noted film historian, Dr. Donald A. Reed, who passed away in 2001. Robert Holguin currently serves as President of the Academy. Mark Altman is Co-President of the Saturn Awards.

Drie movies wat ek die afgelope rukkie gekyk het: ‘n teen-erige movie, ‘n Amerikaanse rugby-movie (waar hulle die Haka doen???) en ‘n meesterstuk oor die lewe van die befaamde komponis. Gebalanseerd, huh?

17 Again met Zac Efron en Matthew Perry het my bo verwagting beïndruk. Ou Zac, al lyk hy nou nie regtig meer soos ‘n hoërskoolkind nie, se spel was actually heel skaflik, hoewel ek dit tog sal like om hom in ‘n fliek te sien waar hy nie ‘n basketbal op sy vingerpunte rondtol of dat basketball enigsins in die fliek is nie (Hairspray tel nie). Maar daar was goeie elemente in die fliek en saam met Juno dink ek behoort ‘n mens eers dit vir tieners te wys voordat jy begin praat oor hoërskoolseks en -swangerskappe. Dis snaaks en breek die ys gemaklik sodat gesprek openlik kan volg sonder om geforseerd oor “die daad” of “die bytjies en die blommetjies” te praat. Sal graag wil sien hoe dit werk!

Dan, Forever Strong met Sean Faris: trust die Amerikaners om ‘n ordentlike rugby-fliek te maak voordat ‘n regte rugbyland soos Engeland, Australië of, wel, selfs SA dit doen (Bakgat! was meer ‘n teen movie as ‘n rugbyfliek en Number 10 moes net nooit gebeur het nie!).
Ek het hiervan gehou, omdat dit uiteindelik iets is waarmee SA seuns kan relate. Omdat ek self baie belangstel in die ontwikkeling van rugbyseuns, kyk ek gereeld na goed om te gebruik. Classic voorbeelde is soos Remember The Titans, wat rassisme, spangees en transformasie aanspreek, Gridiron Gang en natuurlik Friday Night Lights (die series) wat menslike issues tussen spanlede hanteer.
Maar nou is daar ‘n rugbymovie, yay! Ook baie oor spangees, realities, pa-seun-verhoudings, attitude…al daai dinge. Iets oor die movie wat ek nie lekker kon kleinkry nie (maar dalk moes ek fyner geluister het), is die konneksie met New Zealand, want daar was baie gemaak van Maori-woorde vir familie en sulke goed. Ook, natuurlik, die plek van die Kiwi’s se HAKA, wat ek vreemd gevind het vir iets wat in Utah, VSA afspeel. Dit was tot ‘n mate lekker om te hoor hoe die Yanks “Ka mate ka mate koro koro!” skree, want wat de hel, maar ek sou net graag ‘n verduideliking wou kry vir die link. Niks fout daarmee nie, ek het dit net nie gevang nie. Maar, soos die een girl tereg opgemerk het: “Die Amerikaners wat daarna sou kyk, sou dit nie eens agtergekom het nie.” True.
Maar, ‘n goeie movie. Sal dit baie graag saam met die rugbyseuns wil kyk. Die gesprekke daarna behoort awesome te wees. Ook omdat dit waardes soos respek vir jou span en abstinence van slegte gewoontes soos drinkery en drugs en hoërskoolseks voorhou. Dankie aan die producers!

En dan: AMADEUS.
Nou, ek wou al lankal na hierdie fliek van Milos Forman kyk omdat dit so hoog aangeslaan word en oor die naweek het ek die Director’s Cut teen R80 raakgeloop en dit aangeskaf. What a movie! Ek dink, aan die een kant, ly ek nog steeds ‘n bietjie aan bomskok. Want hoe baie van ons is nie maar soos Salieri nie, wat ons lewens devote om reg te leef, en die gebed dat ons met talente geseën gaan word, maar dat dit dan nie regtig gebeur nie? Ek dink dit het te make met ons modernistiese/post-modernistiese wêrelduitkyk van : “You’ll get what is coming to you”, “what goes around, comes around”, “wat jy saai sal (of eerder, MOET) jy maai”…ons leef in die ding van dat ons moet kry wat ons verdien. As jy ‘goed’ leef, verdien jy ‘goeie dinge’. As jy ’sleg’ leef, verdien jy ’slegte dinge’. Ons vra dikwels die vraag: “Why does bad things happen to good people?” Terwyl ons dit ook kan omdraai en vra: “Why does good things happen to bad people?” !
Maar talente en seëninge werk nie volgens ‘n prestasiekalender nie. Op die ou einde moet jy die beste maak met dit wat jy gekry het, sonder om jaloers te wees op dit wat ander bereik het. Natuurlik kan jy daaruit leer, ja, maar jou jaloesie op hul geseëndheid moenie die oorhand kry nie. Makliker gesê as gedaan, of hoe?
Terloops, ek dink ook nie Salieri was so opreg in sy gebed dat hy “net saam met God in Sy glorie wil deel deur die musiek wat hy vir Hom wil maak” nie. Ek sê nie dit is die rede dat hy nie so geseënd soos Mozart was nie, maar ek dink nie ons moet ooit probeer om in God se glorie te deel nie. Dis kind-of Syne alleen…gebruik jy net die talente wat hy vir jou gegee het ten volle en los Hom om jou te bless op Sy tyd en op Sy manier. Sy glorie is Syne…

Laastens: is Hollywood opreg besig om hulle morele wortels te ontgin, of spring hulle net op ‘n bandwagon wat deur flieks soos Fireproof gedryf word? 17 Again promote abstinence, Forever Strong sê dis sleg om te drink en te rook as jy sport speel en Ghosts of Girlfriends Past het ‘n ding teen om met girls te mors. What is up?

Never Back Down is essentially the Karate Kid without Miyagi and MMA instead of Karate. The plot is painfully cliché, but works as a device to carry the action, which is stimulating if you like fighting. The choreography is fresh and enjoyable, and unlike some recent martial arts films, the camera and editing actually shows how submission holds work. With contemporary music that enhances the mood, the film is essentially a two-hour long music video, but it is an entertaining update to the perennial coming-of-age while fighting film. (3/5)

Lý Mỹ Kỳ/Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard) has joined the cast of King of Fighters, an English-language, live-action adaptation of the best-selling Japanese video game filmed in Vancouver and is now in post productions.

Directed by Hong Kong’s Gordon Chan(The Medallion), the movie also stars Sean Faris, Ray Park, Will Yun Lee, Bernice Liu, and David Leitch, who doubles as action choreographer.

The $12 million action pic is a co-production of Taiwan’s Double Edge Entertainment, Japan’s Micott & Basara, Inferno Entertainment from the U.S., the U.K.’s Scion Films, Axis Entertainment, Convergence Entertainment and Singapore’s Innoform Media. The movie is scheduled for delivery sometime in the fall of 2009.

Sony Pictures is first in line to release the flick in the U.S. through a deal with co-producer Inferno Entertainment.

Hasn’t Hollywood learned that video game movies will always flop? No matter how many attractive people they cast in them, video game adaptations are always destined to suck. But hopefully, Maggie Q will spice it up and prove me wrong. Hm, we’ll see.

For those who haven’t heard of her before now(O.O), Maggie Q was born to an American father of Polish, French Canadian and Irish descent, and a Vietnamese mother. She got her start in Hong Kong and East Asian films and broke through to Hollywood in 2006’s Mission: Impossible III. She has since appeared in Live Free or Die Hard and Balls of Fury. Gamers will recognize Q from EA’s Need for Speed: Undercover, in which she plays Inspector Chase Linh.

In the meanwhile, you guys should go see New York, I Love You(2009). She’s also in that one starring alongside a bajillion other stars like Natalie Portman, Orlando Bloom, Shia LaBeouf, Julie Christie, John Hurt, and Shu Qi.

Vanity Fair plays a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the reader, and society at large, with their celebroscopic (it’s a new word I just invented that mixes celebrity and kaleidoscopic, ergo, I’m a genius) covers every month. Some of them are fantastic (see: Tina Fey’s patriotic tease), and some of them, not as fantastic. (see: this month’s “Boys Of Comedy” with Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill and that other guy who’s name I can never remember from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, all in barrels. Is that funny? Or just supposed to be funny?)

Anyways, next month, to celebrate the return of West Side Story to Broadway, Vanity Fair have decided to go all out an have a big photo shoot to celebrate. This is one example:

On the far left, the Sharks, fronted by the Latino Juliet “Maria”, played(?) by Camille Belle, and on the far right, the Jets, headed up by Anglo Romeo “Tony”, posed by Ben Barnes, aka Prince Caspian. In between them, from left to right in the far background, is Minka Kelly (she’s hot, but not too famous, so don’t get concerned), Jay Hernandez (World Trade Centre), Natalie Martinez (the hottie from Death Race), Brandon T Jackson (Alpa Chino in Tropic Thunder), Melanie Diaz (Hamlet 2), Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Shane Lynch (besides the name, its a girl, she’s the tall one in red, and no, I can’t seem to find anything she’s ever done on IMDb), Robert Pattison (OMG its that guy from Twilight *faint*), Cam Gigagnet (the bad guy from Twilight, here looking like he’s about to vom), Trilby Glover (she’s hot, but not too famous, so don’t get concerned), Brittney Snow (the bitch from Hairspray) and, finally, Drake Bell (from Drake & Josh, here equipped with nerdilinger glasses). Wow. I’ve never had to Google so many people I’ve cared so very little about.

But then, in the middle ground, we have Jennifer Lopez, in a frankly amazing pose, dancing with Rodrigo Santono (the guy from those Nicole Kidman Channel ads, and also, disarmingly, Xerxes from 300), and on the left Ashley Tisdale (from High School Musical, really trying to break that pigeon-hole) dancing with a slightly manic looking Chris Evans (The Human Torch in Fantastic Four). Wow, so, like, thats alot of semi-famous people in one picture.

But here’s the thing; does anyone really care? I don’t. I don’t know a single person who will see the cover for next month’s Vanity Fair and think “Oh. My. God. The stars do a tribute to West Side Story??!!! Cashier; here is a blank cheque, right any number you want on it.” And I know alot of gay people. Jackson, Jay Hernandez, Natalie Martinez, Melonie Diaz, and Shane Lynch.
