by BerlinLeatherParisLace

Well, Hallow’een came and went, and the plants around are dead and dying. So The Captain dragged me out of my cave to blog. About spiders and black glitter and Morticia Adams and stuff.

But first– review of The Chron-o-log-i-cal Fla-neur’s Neu Fave Movie…

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead!

Good things require long waits, and the wait was well worth a movie as witty, fun, and entertaining as this one. No doubt it will be hailed at least as a cult classic.

The ever-cool Sean Lennon teamed up with writer/director Jordan Galland (and a really A1 costumer) to bring us the story of Julian (Jake Hoffman; reminded me a little of J.D. from Scrubs) and his best friend (Kris Lemche) and former flame (Devon Aoki; *wolf-whistle*) and her mayhaps-mafioso lover (Ralph Macchio of Karate Kid fame). They all get caught in the theatrical plots of Theo Horace, played by John Ventimiglia (who brings the sex appeal in full force to this event, as the Sire Vampire should). That dish was flanked by a couple of beautiful bloodthirsty babes. As technically inaccurate the whole “beautiful vampire” thing is I can’t help but adore it when done well. And can’t leave out a shout out to Waris Ahluwalia as yet another character that I want to hug. The whole affair ends with my personal favorite character in the movie, the real Hamlet played by Joey Kern like a 70s gameshow host. Not to pidgenhole this fantastic bunch (I would cringe if they were lost to the dead-end-ville that is the Land of Sequels), but King Lear would be my next vote for their deft and darkly comedic treatment.

THE BOTTOM LINE….?

Funny and dark romance, new treatment to an old idea, plenty of eye candy, you’ll be quoting it as you leave the theatre. Five Stars from theFlâneurs.

Okay, now about Morticia Adams. And why parents should foist her as a role model on their kids.

The Lovely Lady of the Darkness has been pretty ignored lately. Come on people. Let’s get this chick back in the spotlight, huh? She represents all that is good for the lovers of Dark. And speaking of goths….

The subculture of goth has more or less fallen out of trend (good or bad? well, try shopping goth) and has been morphed into the festering stink that is Emo. And “ScrEmo” doesn’t exist. Whoever thought that a marriage between skaters and goths was doing too much E in the 90s. Being goth isn’t wearing black and listening to Voltaire (as much as I love that sick, sick, man), but also being disgusted with the hypocrisy of mainstream First-World culture. But we should be able to laugh at ourselves! We should laugh, people! Goths with a sense of humor, because hey, we’re all burning in the end anyway, right? That’s what’s missing today. No one grabs an old black dress and a fishnet opera glove and go has a dance in a graveyard these days. Hence my bid to re-crown Morticia Adams as a role model for goths everywhere. You just can’t beat a perfectly poised, deliciously dark woman (who obviously can get down if you look close at those comments dropped by Gomez and Fester). Seriously, guys.

O, and lets bash Kids Today a little more. There’s a strong stink of whimpification coming from ‘em. Goth is not the next stage of Whimpo–I mean Emo. Let me make this clear. There is a HUGE difference between pink-and-black checkerboard “ooo look I’ve got a skull-and-bows tattoo tee hee tee hee” little teeny bopper in the corner and the girl who collects dead birds and dresses like Emily Strange’s drab cousin. I don’t even think I need to go into it. But enough of that, I’m gonna tell you why Morticia Addams, bless her, is the perfect role model, parents of the Interwebs.

PROs: Modesty

One thing many parents with daughters worry about is their little baby princess’ promiscuity. Well, look at the women–if you can call them that–of Hollywood today! Morticia, on the other hand, is demure, ladylike, and has her sh*t together in general. Yeah, she gets down with her husband, but no one else, that’s for sure. She’s not an Ice B*ch, she’s got standards, and she’s got self-respect. But she doesn’t shove it down your throat. She just naturally radiates class. I don’t think any jock tried any funny business with her in the hallways, s’all I’m sayin’…

PROs: Intelligence

What is the one thing most kids agree parents are freaking out over? Grades. Being intelligent and mentally well-rounded is a huge boon to anyone, and concerned parents everywhere are rallying tutors and programs and all sorts of fancy cr*p to get their precious lil dumplings a leg up. Well, a kid’s not gonna learn if they’re bored or don’t see how it’ll help them in the real world. Most kids I know, even now in college, they just chug along at the minimum, getting a business degree ’cause they’re not into academics and think they’ll figure it out later, or getting a general degree ’cause they can’t decide and they’re not interested in deciding anyway. But enough; how would Morticia inspire otherwise, you ask? Have you seen this woman? Well spoken, an excellent conversationalist, and rather often seen with a book in her hand. This woman is obviously well-educated and is the kind of mom to value it in her kids (even though she doesn’t play up the mom-figure bit nearly as much as her TV-Land counterpart Lily Munster).

PROs: Glamour

As I’ve said before in varying ways, Morticia Addams was one classy broad. It’s hard not to respect a woman of her ilk, and it all comes part and parcel with the glam, baby. Presentation is key, and this is something that Kids Today are sorely lacking. If anyone had presentation, the ability to get attention (of some sort) and get respect just by walking into a room, it was Morticia. It all goes back to all the things I’ve been talking about for the whole post. She had poise, she had wit, she got respect. Parents with bad kids, or afraid they’ll become bad kids? Have them watch a bit of Addams Family, and Morticia will surely teach them the ways of the well-dressed and well-mannered. Why am I so confident of this? Because kids will always imitate what they see, especially when they’re young and impressionable. Also, they love to get a reaction out of the adults. And if they go around imitating Morticia and Wednesday, they’re guaranteed a reaction from most adults, which will only reinforce the behavior. Obviously, I’m not talking about the goons aged 12+. They’re a lost cause due to bad parenting in most cases. Not even Morticia can help them now. So parents, again, the younger you start, the better the results.

Alright, people, that’s three reasons, and this post is already getting long. So let me finish off and sign off. Later.

tsobserver: „Is is just my conservative upbringing, or does this border on porn?“ –
tmo7734: „It’s your conservative upbringing. Good news? It’s never too late to change.“

[via Feministing, Huffington Post, yuhmm]

„Why Photograph a Black Woman in a Cage?“

Why Photograph A Black Woman In A Cage?Amber Rose’s photo shoot for the latest issue of Complex magazine has some wondering about fashion’s ongoing fixation on the idea that black women are animals. Most of Amber Rose’s Complex shoot, which was photographed by Matt Doyle, refers to iconic shots of Grace Jones. The image of Amber with jewelry in her mouth, for example, is a recreation of this picture of Grace eating diamonds, as photographed by Gordon Munro for Interview in the ’80s:There’s Amber smoking in a tux…And Grace smoking in a tux, on the cover of her 1981 album, Nightclubbing.

There’s Amber in a cropped grey tee, with boxing hand wraps…

And Grace, on the cover of her ‘82 single “Pull Up To The Bumper,” wearing a cropped grey tee and boxing tape.

There’s Amber, her naked body covered in oil, posing with a whip…

And Grace, her naked body covered in oil, with a whip.

Perhaps most offensively, there’s Amber in a cage.

And Grace in a cage.

The French artist Jean-Paul Goude shot that last image of Jones; the two were involved in a tempestuous and sometimes violent relationship. The objectification and exoticization of black women isn’t incidental to Goude’s art: it’s the whole point. “Blacks are the premise of my work,” the artist told People in 1979, “I have jungle fever.”

In case anyone thought that was a joke, Jungle Fever was also the title of Goude’s 1982 book. The shot of a caged Jones made the cover.

So it’s no surprise that Goude shot Jones surrounded by raw meat, under a sign that reads “DO NOT FEED THE ANIMAL.” But why would Complex choose to emulate images, some of which come across as not just dated, but riven with deep and troubling statements about black women as animalistic, primitive, and uncivilized creatures? Latoya Peterson has noted of such pictures that the women are always “looking like they are ready to fly off the page and attack.” Claire Sulmers of The Fashion Bomb says of the Complex photos the message is that “these women are so wild they must be caged–they’re sultry, snarling sex beasts.”

Modeling opportunities for women of color in general are slim; as we know, far too many designers consider diversity on the runway and in their advertising to be entirely optional. The industry’s slowness in even inviting black models to the metaphorical table is probably why, thirty years on, Grace Jones remains the most easily identifiable short-haired black model, and therefore a ready subject with which for Complex to associate the close-cropped, bi-racial Amber Rose. (Imagine if Jerry Hall were still considered the only and ultimate blonde model, or Paulina Porizkova were still the touchstone brunette, and white models starting their careers were constantly booked on jobs that recreated exclusively those women’s old spreads.)

The industry’s general unwillingness to embrace models of color as anything besides the exoticized “other” is thwarting the development and popularization of other kinds of black beauty. Even Alek Wek, the Sudanese supermodel, noted that she was often asked to pose in spreads that she felt fitted into a wider and more troubling tradition of black people’s representation in the mainstream media, particularly with regard to a Lavazza calendar where she posed inside a coffee cup, her skin intended to represent the espresso. As Wek wrote in her memoir, “I can’t help but compare them to all the images of black people that have been used in marketing over the decades. There was the big-lipped jungle-dweller on the blackamoor ceramic mugs sold in the ’40s; the golliwog badges given away with jam; Little Black Sambo, who decorated the walls of an American restaurant chain in the 1960s; and Uncle Ben, whose apparently benign image still sells rice.”

It’s worth noting that in re-creating these pictures, Complex did tone them down; gone are the chains from the whip photo, and so too is the raw meat and the sign explicitly referring to the model as an animal in the cage photo. The choices the Complex art director made are almost certainly intended to mitigate the offense of the original images; we’ve come at least some way as a society since Jean-Paul Goude’s day. But how long will it be before we automatically recognize any picture of a black woman caged up like an animal as offensive?

I don’t think Amber Rose is Black. I am not even sure if she is mixed with Black. But she is bi-racial. And calling bi-racial people Black without thinking is a problem in this country. And I am not talking about bi-racial people identifying as only one race because people have the right to identify as whoever they are. Although it is okay for a black and white mixed person to say that they are Black but not okay to say that they are white. I know a girl who filled out an application at a fast food restaurant and checked Black and White and the manager interviewing her erased white right in front of her. These one drop of Black Blood/Only whiteness can be diluted ideas seem to be so mainstream and no one seems to be questioning anything. I was bothered by this in another article that Jezebel had that was talking about a bi-racial girl and it was just titled African-American. I’m not about to go deep into this but it just bothers me. In short it robs people of their identities and enforces racial stratification.

I think a bit of history might help put into context why the image of a caged black woman is so deeply problematic. The story of Saartjie Baartman (“The Hottentot Venus”) is archetypal of European colonial brutalization of African women and their sexuality. As a slave from South Africa in the 19th c., she was taken to Europe and put on display, behind bars, in a traveling circus. After she died, they put her genitalia in a museum. She was absolutely seen as somewhere between human and animal and was subjected to poking and prodding and testing and gawking. This view of Africans as not-quite human/not-quite-animal was central to European colonialism and slavery.

This shit ain’t innocent, folks. Imagine a FASHION photoshoot of a black model being lynched. Then imagine trying to defend it on artistic grounds.

I didn’t think so.

I am also tempted to think that Grace Jones, being a pretty serious artist in my views, could perhaps have seen these photos of herself speaking back to that history with power and rage. I’d like to think.

An interesting analysis, but I think the more interesting question is, what do your observations do to Jenna’s objection that the images exhibit the fixation on “black women as animals”? Does it mitigate it, or amplify it?

For me, at least, my knee-jerk reaction was softer=less animalistic=better, but now that I’m thinking about it, that doesn’t really make any sense. Grace Jones is “animal” in a “don’t fuck with me, I will eat your face” kind of way, while Amber Rose gives off an “I’m a fierce sex kitten who just needs to be shown who’s boss” vibe.

So, I guess my question is (and I’m not really sure what my answer is, even) which is worse: black woman as literally an animal, or black woman who is animal*istic* in the sense that she is exotic/wild/sensual? On the one hand, Jones seems to demand more power, but on the other, she seems not even human. But then, it is Grace Jones.
Jones seems to take on new personas, and make them herself for awhile. She takes that power and makes it herself. Amber Rose doesn’t seem to be taking on the “animal” part, just the “sexy” part, which makes the message totally different.

While I see the Jenna’s point, I often wonder if this constant criticism is one of the reasons that there are so few black women visible in the modeling, television, and film industries. I wonder if the restrictions directors, photographers, etc feel make them hesitant to use black models. I am sure there have been shots of white models in cages at some point. I understand why the reaction would be different but would this different reaction prevent black models from working.

As an example, I find myself coming up with various complaints some black people would have had with Eva Longoria’s character if they had cast a black woman/family in that role. Another is Jada Pinkett’s show. It is so boring because they’ve made the character so perfect it is nauseating.
Saying that photographers are “restricted” implies that Black people are just “sensitive” to the issue. It seems to ignore the historical context and degradation… It would be better to have more POC (particularly WOC) involved in the production level of these shoots such that these subconscious colonial ideas don’t seep onto the images.

@sshacker: I doubt that worries about shoots coming off as racist are preventing black models from working. From what I’ve seen, most magazines use black models in the most offensive, stereotypical shots and use white models for everything else. If anything, it’s the total lack of seeing black women as multidimensional people that can do more than just “ethic” or “exotic” shoots that hurts black models’ careers.

@embarcadero13: My intention wasn’t to blame the ‘victim’ (I hate the idea that because of my race, I am perpetually a victim). I don’t see any point in denying that Black people are sensitive to issues regarding race, with good reason. I am not sure having a WOC behind the scenes would necessarily change things. Isn’t Complex magazine marketed to a Black audience?

They’re not a lot of things that are fair when it comes to issues of race or racial privilege but it doesn’t preclude that fact that our human response to racial issues given our history may prevent people from wanting to work with us because of the delicacy of the situation.
Okay, instead of using the term “blaming the victim” I will now say “justifying the oppressor.”

And I’m with Artemis– it’s not the Black response that is the problem. It’s the act that elicits said response. Here, it’s the manner in which Black women are seen through the lense of the dominant white gaze, reduced to the Other, and at best, the Normalized Other.

If producers had enough complex (ha) knowledge about the subjects of their photos, then there would be less need to tiptoe around the subjects, as there would be less likelihood of offense. . . As everyone has suggested, blonde/white models are treated differently because they are seen as familiar human beings, rather than confusing, exotic, Others (not to say that white women aren’t objectified, but I speak re: this particular subject). White women are mothers/ sisters/ cousins. Black women are Strange, viewed as if exhibits in a zoo.

Shows like Jada Pinkett’s are boring because they don’t know how to write a “realistic” Black character without the stereotypes. It’s as if the producers ask themselves, “What do Black women like besides finger-snapping, hyperrsexual, neck-rolling or drugged out crackmom roles?” It follows, producers don’t realistically portray Black women because they know what is “real” about us.

Also, BET has shown me that just because a market aims towards Black audiences, it is not immune from the same trap. Complex is not guaranteed to be in Black people’s best interests just because it throws up some images of POC, nor is it a guaranteed to be run by POC at its very top level (again, see BET vs. Viacom).

There’s also a marked difference between the feel of the two sets of photographs. The pictures with Amber Rose seem far more submissive and sexual, whereas those featuring Grace Jones show her as powerful and dominant – this is perhaps best illustrated by the contrast between the two cropped grey tee photographs. Grace Jones is in a strong, unyielding stance – arms held up and a set, determined face, etc. – Amber is posed with only one arm – in a weak position and with a loosely clenched fist -, more visible boob, and a suggestive sexyface. It seems like Grace is posing as a strong figure, while Amber is posed as an object of desire.

I don’t know what this says or reflects, but it’s an interesting contrast.

@Pugnacioun: Very good point. In each photograph Rose is shot in a very different way from Jones- a 3/4 portrait rather than a straight on portrait, a full body profile rather than turning her back to us as Jones does. I think the cage photos show the greatest variation. The different hand position (Jones’ hand facing outward, Rose’s inward), the supportive arm (Jones’ bent, Rose’s straight to the point of hyperextension), the forward leg (Jones has the back leg forward, with her hips “open” to us though not in a sexual way, whereas Rose has her front leg forward, giving her a protected look), and finally the cage itself: it can barely contain Jones, but Rose could easily crouch or hunker in hers. Jones is busting out- her foot is cropped but the entire cage is in the shot- whereas by cropping Rose’s shot so that we cannot see the right side of the cage, they took all the tension out and completely contained her inside. It all goes to framing the emotion of the shot and the photographer for Rose was obviously not interested in portraying her as powerful or strong.

Because of the fact that we don’t control our own iconography, images like the ones Goude shot ends up being representative of blacks as whole as opposed to what it is-an artist’s exploration of his own fetishes.

Grace Jones is an amazing artist and always willing to test limits/boundaries. It makes me sad that her general arty freakiness is colored by the legacy and existence of racism and that her explorations/collaborations can’t just be representative of the exploration itself.

She, herself, has compared herself to a lioness/panther/big cat and her energy is nothing less than regal and fierce. I think the cage image represents more the artist fear of being dominated by her power and the need to reduce her to something that he can contain/control. The image isn’t as disturbing as his need.
And Amber, sorry, I don’t REALLY know who you are, but you are no Grace Jones.

@Highsmith: I JUST saw the Shakira video last weekend and I disgusted. But I don’t know– did she really “put herself” in the cage? And if so, is it any better that a woman feels the need to do this in order to sell records.

@embarcadero13: There was a quote (maybe here on Jezebel?) from Shakira about how she found the video concept sexy and empowering, or some shit like that. I haven’t seen the video, but I was like “You found being in a cage empowering? Really?” Hmm.

@titilayo-yo-yo-yo: I’m pretty sure the cage isn’t necessarily an inherently empowering image, but rather an interpretation of the lyrics. She’s in a relationship with a man who expects her to be domestic and monogamous, but she wants something more, and wants to be “let out so [she] can breathe.” It’s more part of the situation she finds herself in than a “being in a cage makes me feel powerful” kind of thing.

Came back to add: most of these shots pretty much suck for MANY reasons, but mostly beccause of the traditional objectification of all women – and yes, bondage is VERY disturbing outside of someone (else)’s bedroom.

I don’t know that we’ve actually progressed at all. Taking out the more offensive elements makes the subtext just that much more subtle but doesn’t remove it. Goude’s shots are shocking but at least you know where he stood. The new shots are more insidious; it’s going to harder for people to see what’s wrong with these photos even though the exact same issues can be raised with both sets.

Question (And I really am asking here). I find it offensive to have a picture of any woman in cage. To me, it speaks to women as chattel. Did it bother anyone else when they did it on ANTM with a white woman as well, or was it just me? Or is it only the particulars of black exoticism that make this offensive to people?

@GirlyQ: I was about to say, I don’t think it’s necessary to photograph ANY woman in a cage, however, it IS different for black women because of the history.
On the other hand, I think it could be a cool picture if it looses the “animal/chattel” association and just shows a “dangerous” looking woman. I mean, think of the animals that are usually (historically? in cartoons?) caged. Tigers. Lions. The “big cats” (which women are often associated with cats, hmm). Tigers/lions/etc are very powerful animals, and a man (himself, no gun) doesn’t stand a chance against one.
A woman caged has the ability to be a really cool imaged. The Amber Rose one misses the mark, the Grace Jones one comes close, but something about it still feels wrong.

@greengrey: Amber Rose doesn’t have the power Grace Jones does. Grace Jones has this…incredible vibe around her, that she just might fuck you up, and the cage isn’t going to do much good in holding her. Frankly, the image where she’s got chains on her ankles, a whip around her throat, and is sort of smiling..that bugs me way more than the cage shot. And is way more evocative of the slave history to me.

But, you know, your mileage may vary.

@GirlyQ: Yeah, as someone else said AR just looks porny, mainstream, and marketable. I’m not scared of AR. Grace Jones, however, looks like she could beat the crap out of me. Even though she’s in a cage, she still has a powerful expression. AR is “playing” at being someone else. AR is basically a knockoff and doesn’t pull it off.
As I said downthread (upthread? who knows anymore), I’m more disturbed by the chains/whips than I am by the cage.

@Jezebabe: Don’t you think caged bird imagery is different than caged mammal imagery? To me it is.

Caged bird = hope and broken dreams

Caged mammal = dangerous beast

In the former we’re trying to keep the bird for our own pleasure, whereas in the latter we’re caging the animal because it’s dangerous to us. I know it’s not that simple- zoos are for our pleasure- but I think that’s the feel I get and it makes a difference to my reading of the images.

And I also think that showing a black woman caged is more problematic than showing a white woman caged. I also suspect I would have more of a problem with an Asian woman, Latina, or any minority woman being shown that way.

@GirlyQ: I share your feelings. Obviously there are more layers to the cultural criticism and implications of seeing a black woman (even, to a lesser degree, any non-white woman) in a cage. But to me, ANY image of a caged woman problematic.

What I don’t understand is why we still need to see it. Are art directors and photographers so starved for fresh ideas that they fall back on the tired image of a cage again and again? It seems to seek a cheap “edginess” by being offensive… But to me, it’s not doing anything new or thought-provoking, it’s just tired and harmful.

@Mmmmkay (gellin’ and Jezebelin): I was struck by that constrast as well. I don’t think it’s just their different body types either. They attempted to tone down the offensiveness of the Jones images, but only ended up making both Amber Rose and the image styles all look less individual, less intense, more mainstream porny and, well, weaker somehow. The photos of Grace Jones might have been offensive, but that woman’s strength (I’m not talking about muscles here) showed very clearly in those images, but Amber Rose just looks like a doll in hers (compared to, say, the presence she has in red carpet and paparazzi shots).

@wundersmack: I think the photo editors in this case are pretty racist. This either amounts to 1) intentionally sensationalizing Amber Rose via overdetermined, racialized/bestialized semiotics or 2) perhaps worse, overlooking the iconic significance of putting women of color in chains, cages, leopard print, etc.

1 is an example of primary ignorance, and 2 is secondary ignorance where:

Primary ignorance=the photo editors are ignorant racists.

Secondary ignorance=they’re such ignorant racists that they don’t even realize how racist these images are.

Yoko Ono and Sean Lennon perform a song off their new album, Between My Head and the Sky. We loved the guitar on this song, check out Yoko’s screams and Exorcist like howling, she’s pretty damn cool for a 78 year old hey?

The band debuted onstage in Toronto 40 years ago this month, the Plastic Ono Band. Although its always been more of a collaboration rather than a formal lineup. It’s current line up consists of Yoko, her son Sean, his former partner Yuka Honda (ex-Cibo Matto), and fellow Japanese art-pop maverick Cornelius, among others. Pitchfork gives the new album a 7.3, check out the review

Since 2001, Yoko Ono has released exactly three recordings, and only one of them can be termed a pro

Since 2001, Yoko Ono has released exactly three recordings, and only one of them can be termed a proper album. The first two, both released in 2007, were Open Your Box– in which vintage Ono tracks were remixed by the likes of Basement Jaxx and Pet Shop Boys– and Yes, I’m a Witch, in which vintage Ono tracks were re-invented and re-imagined by indie luminaries ranging from Cat Power to The Flaming Lips. Both albums fell somewhere between collaboration and retrospective, and neither were really and truly collections of brand new Yoko Ono music, but they were illuminating albums nevertheless: Despite her standing as the most controversial (and, in some circles, reviled) woman in rock history, she has somehow become something of an icon, and a sort of godmother, to a new generation of indie musicians– musicians who know her not as the woman who broke up The Beatles, but as a visionary whose work in the avant garde has become a touchstone.

That she would be a celebrated figure in indie music is not so surprising; give one listen to the new Flaming Lips LP, Embryonic, and it becomes apparent why experimental and “alternative” acts might find inspiration in her acid-drenched artistry. But what does an avant garde artist do when her music is no longer on the vanguard, but rather has become absorbed into the vernacular? The answer comes in the third of the relatively-new Ono albums, and her first proper release since 2001, Between My Head and the Sky. Simply put, it’s the most accessible music she’s ever made, and also some of the best. Released, as so many critics have noted, in the same month that brought the Beatles remasters and Beatles Rock Band, Ono’s album defiantly ignores those landmarks, instead reviving the Plastic Ono Band moniker she created with John: As such, the album stands as a bold statement of her own identity and legacy as an artist in her own right, not just a footnote in the story of the Fab Four.

The Plastic Ono Band emblem is more of a philosophical thing than an actual band, of course: Ono herself is the only original “member” who is present here, as there are no cameos from Eric Clapton or Ringo Starr. Rather, the Plastic Ono name serves as a sort of banner for a loose, exploratory set of recordings that actually recalls the ramshackle, family-and-friends jam-session approach of early Paul McCartney albums, particularly Ram. But of course, Paul’s music has always been based in old-fashioned rock and roll, while Ono’s is something altogether other: Between My Head and the Sky forsakes the shrill screaming and noise-collage tendencies of her most abrasive work, but it’s still rooted in Eastern music, acid jazz, and experimental rock.

She made this set with son Sean Lennon and a group of like-minded confederates, and the resulting album is outstanding. It’s spirited and spontaneous, recorded in less than a week and mostly improvised in the studio. Its fifteen songs are unashamedly eclectic, and they encompass some of Ono’s best work. The opening trifecta is brilliant: “Waiting for the D Train” is locomotive garage rock with impressionistic lyrics from Ono; “The Sun is Down” is a spoke poem set to music that falls somewhere between jazz and techno, and it’s way out there, moody and hypnotic and utterly edgy; and “Ask the Elephant” is nursery-rhyme funk that’s joyfully childlike and absurd.

From there, the band really stretches out for songs, sketches, and tone poems that are loose, diverse, and absorbing in their spontaneity: Not all of them are knockouts, but taken as a whole, the album has a very winning feel of a group of like-minded friends simply exploring their music and following the muse wherever it takes them. There are acid-jazz freakouts, piano pieces, and even some material that borders on trance. It’s experimental, but oddly mesmerizing and generally very melodic. If it’s creativity you’re after, this thing is unimpeachable.

Ono herself is the unifying spirit here, with her personality poured into every note– and no, that’s not a bad thing. She’s as good-natured, as philosophical and peace-loving as ever, and also plenty weird. She sticks to actual singing here, and her lyrics– again, improvised– are charming in their raggedness, their impressionistic form of expression. At times she’s essentially spouting give-peace-a-chance mantras that don’t read well on paper, but, given the spirit of this project, they come across as rather charming. But the brilliance here is that, while it’s more a proper Yoko Ono album than anything she’s released in years, it’s also very much a collaboration, not just between mother and son, but between Ono and her band: It’s music driven by the common drive to make something special, something brimming with imagination, and on those terms it can only be called a smashing success.

“Parachute” , Sean Lennon

Today is still October 9 here in Arizona. The day has had much to occupy me, and so I am only now getting around to reflecting on the importance of this particular day.
John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940. To Beatles fans the day is well known, and there have been celebrations and observances going on to honor him. As with all things Beatles, not much gets by the fans, whether it’s birthdays, observances of the passing of John or George, or the anniversary of an album’s release. Every event merits a corresponding celebration.
If you love the Beatles, you love John. Even if he’s not your “favorite”, without John you have nothing special. You don’t have attitude or, as the British say, “cheek”. There would have been music, no doubt, but none of the greatness that is Beatles.

When you listen to the early recordings, it’s mostly John on lead. He and Paul did a lot of doubling up on songs, and then there was the double tracking, but John was the dominant voice. His was the voice on the first album, Please Please Me, that was leading the UK into the delirium that would become Beatlemania.

John’s voice is nearly inimitable. He doesn’t sound like anyone else, whether he’s tearing up his throat on Twist and Shout, or gently reminding us that he had a mother whose loss changed his life in the lilting and beautiful Julia. He could sound sexy or crazed, and everything in between. His phrasing was masterful, delivering each line of a song in the only way it should be sung.
John could draw you into his song in a way that is unique to only a few artists. His was an ability to create an environment and guide the listener into the experience that he painted with his words. It’s one of the reasons Beatle covers are so inadequate, I think. Those other voices don’t carry you with them.
Whatever is lacking in John’s style of singing (some people actually think that’s possible) is more than compensated for in his ability to manipulate the listener into being a participant in his musical vignette. John’s world becomes our world, his views and empathies our own.

Losing John at the hands of an assasin devastated a generation, and that loss is a part of our history now. He might have written more and better music, or not. There wasn’t any way to minimize who he was, what he had accomplished. Writing and performing in addition to all of that simply meant he could. The doing of it only endeared him to us that much more.
The energy he represented and the vision of his brand of genius is missing from our collective lives, his eclectic talent no longer a still living entity for us to embrace. But amazingly, what he did do in those Beatle and post Beatle years remains as vibrant and important as ever. He was part of something that never grows old, so in a way, neither does he. We will miss John, but never the music. It remains with us.

Nie.
