At the time it played like a warm-up act for Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, but now, particularly since the big guy’s been doing nothing but kiddie flicks the past couple of years, “The Rundown” (or “Welcome to the Jungle” as it was called in Australia) is seen as one of the big guy’s better, more ‘fan friendly’ efforts. But even if Johnson had followed up the Peter Berg-directed action/comedy with something, well, a little less messy and a bit more awe-inspiring (like say “Spy-Hunter”, the flick Johnson was set to do with John Woo before it went bye-bye), the film may still have become more appreciated over time. I mean, it ain’t a bad film – there’s some good laughs in there, some great action sequences, and a terrific cameo by Arnie Schwarzenegger (who himself was convinced Johnson was the next big thing in action – - right before Disney got a hold of him and forced him into “The Game Plan”) right off-the-bat. Mainly, it’s entertaining – perfect late Saturday night entertainment.

In an interview with Latino Review, the always-busy Peter Berg (Seems to have about six films going at once – though only one of them usually makes it before the camera; hmm, sounds like your typical producer scenario) said he’s keen to do a sequel to the 2004 actioner.

“I don’t know why there’s not [a sequel]” says the director of the forthcoming “Battleship” movie, adding “I think, yes. The answer is yes. I love ‘The Rundown’. I don’t know that the audience at the time was quite ready to accept Dwayne [Johnson]. We had a certain amount of resistance. They screwed around with our release date. The film still performed well.

Berg says it’s just a question of when he, Johnson and Seann William Scott can find the time to do it.

“We always joke about when we’re going to do it. Sometimes it’s just a question of timing and getting all the stars to line up but there’s no reason why we wouldn’t do it”.

I never thought I’d be seeing this but a sequel to “The Rundown” might just be what The Rock needs to win back the many fans he’s lost on the way to Walt’s house.

Sinopsis:

Planet 51 – In theaters 11/20. For more information and free games visit http://Planet51.com/. Planet 51 is a galactic sized animated alien adventure comedy revolving around American astronaut Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker, who lands on Planet 51 thinking he’s the first person to step foot on it. To his surprise, he finds that this planet is inhabited by little green people who are happily living in a white picket fence world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders…like Chuck! With the help of his robot companion “Rover” and his new friend Lem, Chuck must navigate his way through the dazzling, but bewildering, landscape of Planet 51 in order to escape becoming a permanent part of the Planet 51 Alien Invaders Space Museum.

Ellen DeGeneres Show – November 17, 2009

You won’t believe the voice of 12-year-old RHAP SALAZAR. I saw a YouTube video of his singing and it blew me away. I’m flying him in all the way from the Philippines. Then, I’ve helped DWAYNE JOHNSON get over his fear of tarantulas, and last time we worked on his fear of roller coasters. When he’s here to talk about his new movie “Planet 51,” I’ll see if there’s anything else we can work on. Just call me Dr. Ellen. Also, with the amount that BRIAN WILLIAMS travels the world while hosting “NBC Nightly News,” I’m so happy that he’s taking the time to be on my show today. He is a funny guy and it’s always great to have him here. I hear he’s a fan of pranks, too. Will he still be a fan if the prank is on him? There’s only one way to find out! Also, you never know who else may drop by the show today, so don’t miss it! And I’m getting excited — it’s just three more days until Robert Pattinson is here!

I really enjoyed this movie and it’s not just for kids, adults will love it too.

It’s like Shrek, where there’s a wicked sense of humor mixed with romance, adventure and awesome 50’s hits music.

I’m definitely going to buy the soundtrack when it comes out.

I loved 50’s rock n roll and that’s what this movie is about.

The good old 50’s where the village of aliens, is invaded by a human astronaut.

They argue about who is the alien then the little green guy LEM has to rescue his friend before it’s too late and his brain gets removed for scientific experiments.

Riuscirà Chuck Baker a tornare a casa?

Valutazione finale.

http://moreivyou.wordpress.com As voiced by Dwayne “the artist formerly known as The Rock

http://moreivyou.wordpress.com

As voiced by Dwayne “the artist formerly known as The Rock” Johnson, astronaut Chuck Baker is the paragon of all-American achievement — that is, until he conquers a far off world with an unexpected population, one inexplicably steeped in our ’50s-era culture and terrified by the prospect of an alien invader in human form. More unfortunately for us, Chuck has landed smack-dab in the middle of Planet 51, a short-sighted assembly of sci-fi references and scatalogical humor that should nonetheless placate undemanding tots and, by extension, their undiscerning parents for ninety minutes or so.

The basic premise is lifted from The Day The Earth Stood Still, as green-skinned astronomer Lem (voiced by Justin Long) has to hide the new visitor from the military that stand between him and his ship. Chuck harps on relentlessly about “the right stuff,” as if today’s kids know their Gus Grissom from their Buzz Lightyear. We get an alien pet with a tongue within a tongue (instead of a mouth within a mouth) that urinates acid (instead of bleeding it). There’s your token E.T. ”over the moon” visual cue, and forgive me if I imagined a 2001 reference that actually wasn’t in there (although I’m fairly certain a Singin’ in the Rain bit was). It all just sort of blurs together after a while.

Oh, and just in case you feared all of that might go whizzing right over the little ones’ heads, there’s a Macarena joke and a Facebook reference. Welcome to 2009, y’all.

Writer Joe Stillman was one of four writers to receive an Academy Award nomination for their snappy Shrek screenplay, but by the time we get to corks being offered as butt plugs to prevent probing and an exposed (off-screen) penis being mistaken for an antenna, I can’t help but wonder if he isn’t that group’s answer to Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer being touted as two of the six writers of Scary Movie (you know, the worst ones).

Beyond all that, the script fails to justify why some planet unknown to ours would speak English and be seemingly stuck in a culture identical to our own in the 1950s — it’s simply reason enough to have the role reversal scenario play out amidst a relentless soundtrack of sugar-coated pop covers and a wardrobe of era-appropriate shirts (although not a single creature in sight bothers with wearing pants). Did we send some sort of Americana capsule to this planet that caused the white picket fences and the round convertibles and the duck-and-cover drills? Is there any sort of implication about our country’s knack for colonization, before the era and since? Nope. Nothing. It’s retro just because it can be.

Johnson could voice cocky swagger in his sleep, and might as well have; same with Long and whiny panic. Gary Oldman earns a paycheck as a generally threatening general, while John Cleese does likewise as his lackey scientist. Jessica Biel happens to be the love interest, though she’s more often than not keeping company with an aggravating hippie equivalent (Alan Marriott). Seann William Scott plays Long’s initially paranoid pal who falls hard for Johnson’s own sidekick, a rock-collecting space rover named… Rover. (Was it legal to have creature-machine relations in these fake-fifties? Oh, never mind…)

To some extent, Planet 51 does demonstrate how the bar for mediocre computer-generated animation has been raised, if only in terms of visuals. Clothing textures or fire dynamics simply couldn’t have looked this good a decade back, and it doesn’t take Pixar to make a cartoon pretty. It does, though, take them to make a cartoon matter, and knowing full well that Up is now on DVD or that the new old-fashioned likes of Fantastic Mr. Fox will soon by playing on a neighboring screen (if not already) means that I can’t really recommend something this lackluster with a good conscience.

Sure, it’s bright and shiny and will keep your kids stationary for an hour and a half, but parents? Try and hold out for the intelligent ‘toons. I promise that they’re out there, waiting to be discovered by you and yours.

(Jorge Blanco, Javier Abad and Marcos Martinez, 2009)

November 20, 2009

by Joel Crary

Compared to “WALL-E”, the Pixar animated film about a robot who journeys into outer space and finds out more about humanity’s place in the grand scheme of things, “Planet 51″ is pretty inert. It’s a film about first contact that succeeds pretty well only when it directly lifts from its predecessor. When Captain Charles T. Baker lands on an alien planet and figures out that the life forms can speak perfect English, he asks for a cappuccino. That’s our best of the best right there.

I understand what screenwriter Joe Stillman was going for with Baker. He’s a cocky, shallow, chiseled hero type who has no business flying a spacecraft. He would be voiced perfectly by Patrick Warburton. Instead, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has stepped in, marking his latest effort to boost his kid-friendly appeal. I even get that choice, to a certain extent. He’s a big guy, a hero type, the kind of guy NASA might send to plant Old Glory on foreign galactic turf. But Johnson plays his character like an overgrown kid who’s eaten too many Twix bars.

Baker tells us that “Planet 51″ is 20 billion miles from Earth. Fine. It kind of looks like Saturn with a terrestrial composition instead of a gaseous one. Trees and intelligent life flourish. The atmosphere is apparently exactly like ours, because Baker can breathe freely. The aliens are green, sport antennae and have four fingers on each hand. Yes, there is a “Gimme four!” joke. Other than that, they look remarkably human. They wear clothing and have haircuts and run comic books shops.

Baker lands in the town of Glipforg, which looks like Hill Valley from the 1955 segments of “Back to the Future”. The vehicles look like the vehicles from the 2015 segments of “Back to the Future Part II”. Even though the cars hover, the alien race hasn’t seemed to have mastered air travel, and certainly not space travel. Teenager Lem (Justin Long) lands a job at the local planetarium. He thinks the universe is 500 miles wide and that the stars number about a thousand, and no one corrects him. He has a crush on girl next door Neera (Jessica Biel) and his best friend Skiff (Seann William Scott) is a little too attached to robots.

“Planet 51″ contains a lot of homages to past works of science fiction like “E.T.”, “Jurassic Park” and “Terminator 2″, some kind of funny, but none really all that imaginative. The film also has an affection for pulp comics and old sci-fi films from the 50’s of the “It Came from Outer Space” variety. Black and white news reports are cheapened by commercials for toothpaste (probably a wise idea not to go with cigarettes). Green versions of Marilyn Monroe grace the pages of entertainment magazines. Young hippies protest for the sake of protesting and get around in space age Volkswagens.

Most interestingly, there is an undercurrent of Cold War paranoia running through the entire picture. A character named General Grawl (Gary Oldman) wants his army to exterminate Baker and spreads propaganda that he is a master of mind control and brainwashing. The kids are taught the duck-and-cover maneuver by their schoolteacher. All the while, Grawl has his opposable olive digit on the red button that will blow everything to hell, or whatever the creatures believe in.

The filmmakers seem very much in tune with darker visions of suburban America, but routinely hold back on expressing them lest things get too dour. The film borrows heavily from “WALL-E”, down to a spunky and mute robot character (who is admittedly the most fun to watch). The success of “WALL-E” and “Up” has shown that today’s kids can accept and be entertained by heavier thematic material if it’s delivered in the right way. “Planet 51″ is like a history book with all of the blood and guts blacked out. The teenage melodrama is routine, and there are a couple of dreadfully bizarre and borderline homophobic jokes about anal probing that should have been dropped altogether. The wonder of space travel is turned into a generic fantasy by Baker, who is a complete joke, but kind of a flat one.

“Planet 51″ is Ilion Animation Studios’ first feature. Based out of Madrid, their animation team shows talent. Considering that it’s a film about exploration of the most universal order, I found myself wishing for more depth. Yes, it should keep kids busy for 85 minutes. Satisfying their curiosities about the night sky is another matter.

“Ghostbusters: meets “Men in Black”, Hollywood tackles another science-fiction comedy. A meteor slam

“Ghostbusters: meets “Men in Black”, Hollywood tackles another science-fiction comedy.

A meteor slams into the earth narrowly missing a fire fighter recruit (Seann William Scott). The meteor brings out two college professors (David Duchovny, Orlando Jones) to investigate the impact.

The professors chip away at the meteor and bring back samples to their university. The meteor fragments are like nothing they have ever seen before. Before the two college professors realize there is a problem with the meteor fragments, the “impact” site is covered with government officials. Ted Levine and Julianne Moore are among the scientists called in with the military.

“Evolution” is the perfect summer movie for teens and nostalgia buffs. It’s brand of comedy isn’t as vulgar as a lot of the other comedies released this past year. It embraces director Ivan Reitman’s formula of goofiness with the military and science fiction like he did with his runaway hits of the 80’s classics “Stripes” and “Ghostbusters”.

It is utterly uncanny how many similarities there are in this film and “Ghostbusters”. Duchovny’s movement and charisma reminded me a lot of Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman in “Ghostbusters”. Julianne’s reluctance to Duchovny’s childish advances were a lot like what Murray and co-star Sigourney Weaver’s did in their scenes. The scenes where people shriek and runaway from the ghosts are here as the aliens come upon some unsuspecting suburbanites. Even the slime slowly creeps in but that would be giving too much away.

“Ghostbusters” was a huge hit in 1984 becoming the highest-grossing film of that year. “Ghostbusters” went on to become the highest grossing comedy in history until it was taken down by “Home Alone”.

I always wanted a Ghostbusters 3 but in some ways this film is almost a third one. It would have been incredible if they did bring in the original Ghostbusters cast for this flick. It may have been a lot funnier. I really wanted this film to have more laughs and more creatures.

I really fell in love with the “Ghostbusters” formula and science fiction laughs. On that alone I could have given this film a higher grade but it was the ending and the discovery of how to stop the aliens that really made me angry at the film’s writers.

After all that great lead up and comedy you end it with this? I was so disappointed with the lack of creativity and settling they did on this ending. I hope there is an alternate on the DVD.

The best scenes involve the aliens and man’s reactions. It’s a shame these were all seen in the trailers. The shopping mall scene and the rectal examination were by far the most entertaining scenes.

Originally this film was supposed to be a “horror” film like I would assume “Mimic” or “The Relic” but the studio decided to bring in Reitman to inject some humor. The film was reconceived and its what we have today. Does that story have any ramifications or influence on what made this film become what it is? Let me know your take on this.

3.5 out of 5

An American astronaut believing himself to be the first person ever to set foot on Planet 51 gets the shock of his life in this animated adventure comedy featuring the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Jessica Biel, John Cleese, and Gary Oldman. Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker (voice of Johnson) was on a mission to boldly go where no man had gone before, a remote celestial body dubbed Planet 51. The scientific community had surmised that Planet 51 was uninhabited, so when Captain Baker steps out of his spacecraft to discover a race of tiny green people living in quaint communities reminiscent of 1950s America, he can’t quite believe his eyes. Unfortunately, the tiny extraterrestrials suffer from a universal fear that their utopian community will one day be overrun by alien invaders…just like the extra-large astronaut who now stands before them. As the paranoid aliens attempt to capture the peaceful visitor and make him the latest attraction at the Alien Invaders Space Museum, Captain Baker must count on his robot companion, “Rover,” and his new friend, Lem, in order to navigate this strange new world and find a way back home before it’s too late.

I remember when I watched this as a kid and thought it was the funniest thing. Now I don’t eve

I remember when I watched this as a kid and thought it was the funniest thing. Now I don’t even know what I was thinking.

Jesse Montgomery (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester Greenburg (Seann William Scott) are hard-partying pizza-delivery dudes who wake up one morning with no recollection of what happened the previous night — including where they parked Jesse’s car! As they try to retrace their steps, they get mixed up with latex-clad transsexual strippers, a pot-smoking dog, invading aliens … and angry ostriches!

I look at this film and all I have to say is wait “Dude”, sounds like a Lebowski sequel. Sadly it is not and and to be truly honest it should’ve been cause with this story there was nowhere to go with this story.

The one thing I will give this film is that it is great to see with a bunch of friends. A lot of the dialouge is very quotable, though it’s stupid as hell. When I watched this with a bunch of my friends we we’re laughing cause it was stupid and some of it, but not too much of it was actually funny.

So the most annoying thing about the party is the protagonists of this film played by Kutcher and William Scott. They have good performances, but are really annoying and I didn’t find any of their lines hilarious at all. They sort of overdo the fact that they are a bunch of stoner to the point of where their just frickin stupid.

The plot goes from bad to worse in a total of 10 minutes into the film. By the end it really does get out of hand as it starts to do these lame-ass parodies of science-fiction films, and to be truly honest I found this not funny nor amusing, and just totally stupid to have.

The production value of this film just looked really cheaply made. I felt like I was in a really bad canceled in 3rd week TV sit-com. I know this is a minor complaint but I had a feeling that the film could’ve branched out rather than just staying in the same place doing nothing interesting at all.

One more note that if you actually watch this film and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, you will see so many similarities. However, Bill and Ted’s was good this is not.

Consensus: This is a dumb, cheaply made, and idiotic film that features unlikable characters and a bunch of stupid stoner jokes that aren’t the least bit amusing.

J’ai vu mourir le World Trade Center, l’A.S.

Possibly the funniest movie of 2008, Role Models opened our eyes to the world of L.A.I.R. (or “live action interactive roleplaying explorers”) and I know all of us looked up the soonest LARP battle in or around our respective cities (or maybe only I did. Here’s a list http://www.larplist.com/mainlist.php?op=wodlist). Let the battle begin…

Drinking Rules:

Drink whenever anyone says L.A.I.R.E.
Drink every time Gayle says B.S. or cocaine.
Drink any time a country from L.A.I.R.E. is said.
Drink 5 seconds every time Ronnie says something racist.
Drink the any time someone uses a ridiculous Olde English phrase.
Drink 10 seconds every time Gayle does something inappropriate with the bagel-dog.
Drink anytime Ronnie names a Ben Affleck movie or calls Danny Ben Affleck.
Drink anytime Wheeler and Danny say something back-to-back while talking to a third person.

Bulletproof Monk 2003 Director: Paul Hunter Writers: Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris Starring Chow Yun

Bulletproof Monk 2003

Director: Paul Hunter

Writers: Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris

Starring Chow Yun Fat, Seann William Scott, Jamie King, Karel Roden, Victoria Smurfit, Mako and Marcus Jean Pirae

Chow Yun Fat in a martial arts centric film makes it a given that I will see it. I was a little wary of this one though, since I don’t connect martial arts action with Seann William Scott. Thankfully though, this film combines high octane fights with some great comedic elements, and they could not have got anyone better than Scott for this kind of role. The film is fast paced, but has just the right amounts of down time that a action film like this needs. Fat is a great mentor to the burgeoning talent of Scott’s character and it is a hoot to watch their interactions. The plot is something reminiscent of the likes of Indiana Jones and it fits really well in the fantastic world of this film. This is a film that meshes all its ingredients together well and at the end you have a fun as hell action film.

The plot basics are this. the film opens at the end of World War II where a Tibetan monk (Fat) has passed the final tests to guard a ancient scroll that can either help or hinder mankind. Suddenly, the temple is attacked by a group of Nazis led by Strucker (Roden). The monk escapes and is adept at evading the Nazi for 60 years. Flash forward to the present day, where the monk is till being chased by the Nazi and his goons and he runs into Karl (Scott) a pickpocket that the monk sees much potential in and he decides to stick with him and see how he develops. This leads to Karl allying himself up with another street person, Jade (King). It all leads to the Monk being captured by Strucker and getting superpowers and youth from the scrolls, and now it is up to the Monk and Karl to put a stop to Strucker once and for all, but will Karl be up to the task?

This is a damn good action film. The direction by Hunter is very fast paced and frenetic, which really works in tandem with the story. Hunter’s past work is in music videos and that really works to his benefit on this film. The script is good too, very funny when needed and moving the plot quickly as needed too. The characterization of the 3 main characters is quite believable. The cast is great too, Fat as the monk is very believable and charming. Scott as Karl, the flawed hero, does a expert job, balancing humor and action very deftly. King as the romantic interest is very good too and she holds her own in the fight scenes as well. Roden, as the Nazi heavy is quite despicable and very fun to watch. The action sequences in the film are great, my personal favorite was Karl’s fight with Mr. Funktastic, was very well staged and a delight to watch. This is definitely recommended to martial arts fans and specifically to fans of Jackie Chan or Sammo Hung, as the film is very similar to some of their more comedic films.

This one gets 3 out of 5

Dino line dancing - the next big Hollywood trend. (20th Century Fox) Starring the voices of Ray Roma

Dino line dancing - the next big Hollywood trend.

(20th Century Fox) Starring the voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Simon Pegg, Seann William Scott, Kirsten Wiig, Chris Wedge, Jane Lynch, Josh Peck, Bill Hader, Karen Disher. Directed by Carlos Saldanha and Mike Thurmeier.

For most of us, family isn’t the only thing – it’s everything. There are also all sorts of families, some not so readily apparent as others.

The Ice Age is in full swing and Ellie the Mammoth (Latifah) is expecting a child any day now. Her mate Manny (Romano) is of course as bumbling, moronic and well-intentioned as most cinematic expectant fathers. He builds a playground on which he has stuck snowballs to blunt the sharp branches on trees and beaks on birds. He goes into paroxysms of panic whenever Ellie has indigestion. Still, it’s a great time to be a mammoth. Everything is as it should be, with friends all around and Scrat (Wedge) chasing the ever-elusive acorns.

Still, not all is well in paradise. Diego the saber-toothed tiger (Leary) and Sid the sloth (Leguizamo) are feeling a bit left out. Diego, who is losing some of his predatory edge, having been outrun by a gazelle (Hader), decides to leave for greener pastures. Sid, being Sid, finds some strange eggs in an underground cavern and decides to adopt them as his own children. Scrat has discovered a rival, the seductive flying squirrel Scratte (Disher) who is maddeningly attractive.

Then the eggs hatch and instead of furry little mammals there are carnivorous reptiles – big ones. Think Tyrannosaurus Rex-sized. What’s worse, Mama Rex has come looking for her missing babies and is none-too-pleased to find them with warm-blooded types. She picks them up – and Sid too – and carries them back underground.

As annoying as Sid is, his friends decide to band up once again and go search for him in the cavern. Although Manny and Diego are skeptical as to Sid’s survival chances, Ellie and her entourage – Crash (Scott) and Eddie (Peck) the possums – are insistent, so down below they go.

They find a whole new world there, one of lush tropical vegetation, lava falls and lots and lots of dinosaurs. Some are friendly, some not so much. No time to wonder how this world got here or how it can sustain itself, they’ve got to find Sid. However, they need a guide to this world that is unfamiliar and dangerous. One is provided in Buck (Pegg), a one-eyed weasel (make of that what you will) who has spent years tracking down the gigantic white dinosaur who took his eye. Ahab, meet Moby Dick.

I will say this about Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – the animation is superb, keeping the cartoon-like qualities that satisfy the kids but keeping it real to satisfy their parents. Strangely, though, the performances are a bit flat. There’s no sense of fun and wonder that made the first two Ice Age movies so entertaining. Instead, you get the feeling that this was rushed through for the sole purpose of filling a spot on the Fox release schedule and making the big bucks that the first two did.

There is also a lot more of Scrat and his new partner here. Scrat has become more popular in many ways than the main characters of the story are. They use him for the trailers as well as the advertisements. Scrat, as in the first two movies, almost never interacts with the main characters. While his sequences are among the best and funniest in the movie, they seem almost like commercial interruptions and I suppose in a way they are. Gotta sell that Scrat merch, after all. Still, I’ve always loved the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote cartoons and the Scrat sequences are a lot like that.

This is very kid-friendly in every way with all that implies. When stacked up against the Pixar and DreamWorks movies, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur doesn’t compare very favorably. Still in all, it’s a pleasant if unchallenging 90 minutes of summertime fun, and the kids are going to want to see it regardless of whether you do or not. Accordingly, make plans to buy this for the tykes if you intend to have any peace in your household over the next few months. Don’t forget the toys, action figures and video games that are sure to be demanded in the wake of the movie.

REASONS TO GO: Extremely well-animated. Nothing here is all that offensive, and the Scrat sequences are hysterical at times.

REASONS TO STAY: Kind of boring, kind of bland.

FAMILY VALUES: Perfect summertime entertainment for bored kids – not so much for their parents.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT: The Buck character was based not on Crocodile Dundee so much, but on Frank Buck, a legendary hunter and adventurer whose exploits inspired the TV series “Bring ‘em Back Alive.”

NOTABLE DVD FEATURES: The Expanded 2-Disc DVD and Blu-Ray editions include the Scrat Pack, a collection of every Scrat short ever made, some of which are included on DVD editions of the first two films. There are also a couple of Ice Age games. Surprisingly, the DVD is presented in 2D whereas it was released theatrically in 3D. That’s a shame, because the 3D presentation was one of the best of recent years.

FINAL RATING: 6/10

TOMORROW: Amelia
