This conversation recently took place between a 51 year old dentist and his 26 year old son. This may make you think twice!

Son: Hey Dad, I gotta tell you something really interesting. Remember what you did to my teeth the last time I was in your office?  Well, it must have been cool because I posted it on my Facebook page and now it seems as though a lot of my friends are talking about it. And not only that, my friends are passing it onto THEIR friends. I’m becoming kind of famous on Facebook because of what you did to me! Father: Well, I don’t understand Facebook too much but that sounds great son.

Father: Viral? Is that good or bad? Doesn’t sound too good to me.

Son: Sorry Dad, maybe you are confused. A computer virus is bad, but something on Facebook or Twitter or YouTube going “viral” is actually GOOD. It means that the number of people viewing it is increasing quicker and quicker as time goes on and it’s growing like crazy.

Dad: Interesting son, because I keep hearing that some dentists are doing stuff on Facebook and using Social Media to help their practices. But I don’t think it’s for me. What I’m doing is working pretty well. I am comfortable with the regular stuff.

Son: I know what you mean but let me just tell you that almost every single person I know uses Facebook. It’s just the way it is these days. And there’s other stuff as well. When my friends and I want to find a movie to go to, we go to Flixter. When we look for a restaurant, we go to Yelp. Videos? We go to YouTube.  It would probably be a natural to find out about a dentist through Social Media.

Dad: I have an ad in the Yellow Pages and I do some ads in the local papers though. I don’t need Social Media.

Son: You’re thinking is a little backwards. That kind of sounds like someone saying years ago “I don’t need a fax machine.” Or “I don’t need email.” “Nor do I need a website.” You DO need this stuff. And it seems to me that the people who do things early are normally the winners! You see Dad, no one I know even owns a Yellow Pages phonebook and we get all of our news online. Dad, I have a question for you? Do you want to be looked at as a cool dentist that is really up on the latest things or an old dentist who is not willing to try new stuff?

Dad: Son, I think you know the answer to that.

Son: Dad, I really think you need to explore what is going on around us. Wake up. The world is changing. Facebook has over 300 million users and is growing every day. Wouldn’t it be a great way to communicate to your patients, both old and new? I searched and there are already plenty of dentists doing this. And like you always told me when I was younger, we need to keep up and explore new ideas. Well, here is one thing I think you should look into for the sake of your dental practice. Aside from not blogging recently, I have been spending alot of time speaking with folks in the online marketing space as I work on building the go-to-market strategy and machinery for VMTurbo.  One area which I knew little about when I started having these discussions (although now I do know a little bit more!) is SEO.  Here are some tips I’ve picked up over the last few months:

• Content is king:  Make sure you have lots of content on your site, that you update it regularly.  Create an editorial schedule that states when you will post, and on which topic, and then stick to it!  Although frequent updates are good, just getting started and sticking to a regular schedule (even if it means you’re only posting every couple of weeks or once a month) is still very useful.
• Get Links-the more relevant, the better:  The more links you get from relevant and respected sites, the better your SEO ranking.  For example, 1 link to your company’s website from a nytimes.com article about your industry on is going to be weighed more highly than 10 links from blogs that have nothing to do with your industry.
• Make your content SEO friendly:  There are consultants as well as products and services that can help you make your site SEO friendly.  Make sure you are doing something to help make your site more appealing to the search engine crawlers.  In some cases, especially if you’re a web-based business, it may make sense to develop the SEO expertise in house.  One SEO friendly practice is using META tags with the specific keywords you’d like to rank for, and to include those keywords within your content text as well.  On the flip side, sites that are too Flash heavy often don’t index well with Google.

There’s no rocket science here, but if you’re an SEO newbie, I think these tips can definitely help you get going in the right direction.

Hur påverkar exempelvis Googles nya produkter oss webbyårer? Eller andra företags tjänster för den delen?! Är det så kanske att alla tjänster och produkter som utvecklas blir en bit i ett stort pussel som ger en bättre digital upplevelse? Eller är det resan dit som blir en bättre upplevelse, eller kanske resultatet av resan rent av!? Det jag tänker främst på är begreppet sökmotoroptimering, det som även i Sverige benämns som SEO – Search Engine Optimization.

Jag vill tro att SEO inte längre är en ”produkt” man knyter an på sin sajt. Det finns bolag som har detta som sin yttersta expertis och som tar redigt betalt för detta. Idag så finns SEO-tänket med redan i ett tidigt stadium i ett projekt, vilket ju är tacksamt. Implementationen av SEO-produkten dessa företag erbjuder innebär ofta strukturella ingrepp i en sajt, vilket ofta medför stora utvecklingskostnader. Jag tror dessutom att även beställare börjar bli medvetna om detta och det är därför inte så svårt att argumentera för det i projekt som berör hela sajten.

Gammal arbetsmodell

Den ”gamla” arbetsmodellen var antagligen ganska platt och bestod (förmodligen aningen förenklat) av följande moment:

1. Teknisk plattform (om kunden har en befintlig)
2. Design (Photoshopskisser)
3. Implementation (HTML och annan nödvändig utveckling för att visa sidan)
4. Eventuell copy
5. Inmatning av textinnehåll och bilder

Detta är en ganska teknisk och odynamisk modell. Alternativt kan punkt 1 och 2 byta plats om kunden inte redan har en befintlig plattform. Jag skulle vilja påstå att det åtminstone i många fall ser ut på detta viset eftersom ”man inte kan bygga taket på ett hus innan väggarna och grunden står där”.

Ny arbetsmodell

Den ”nya” arbetsmodellen, påverkad av hur SEO har förändrats de senaste åren, tror jag snarare har dessa moment:

1. Undersökning/analys av ex. målgrupp
2. Koncept
   • Copy
   • Design
   • Arkitektur
3. Design
   • Formgivning
   • Struktur/upplägg
4. Teknisk grund
   • Systemutveckling
5. Implementation
   • GUI (HTML/Javascript/Animation/Film/etc…)
   • Kopplingar mellan GUI och SU (ex Ajax, databasanrop, etc.)
   • Inmatning av innehåll
6. Uppföljning och komplettering

I andra punkten avverkas de viktigaste delarna i bygget, sjäva ritningen för huset. Här identifierar man vilka delar som är viktiga och bör prioriteras utifrån analysen i punkt 1. Och här kan vi faktiskt rita taket först om vi skulle vilja göra det, för att sedan låta grunden baseras på att taket har den här stommen eller den där vinkeln. Informationsarkitekturen ligger till grund för hur texter formuleras och vilka element som skall finnas med i designen. Redan här kan man om projektet behöver det göra användartester som visar på strukturella missar, tankefel, etc.

Att ta fram en design i det här läget ger mycket större möjligheter än i föregående modell. Här gäller det att skapa yta i symbios med textförfattaren med ritningen som inparameter.

När det strukturella arbetet är klart och man har hittat rätt ”tone of voice” kan arbetet med den tekniska plattformen börja bearbetas. Funktioner i sajten är identifierade och rätt underlag för att börja utveckla dessa finns beskrivet i en teknisk specifikation och dokumenterat i designen.

Sista momentet i själva bygget. Sidan skall HTML-kodas, visuella funktioner som effekter och stilmallar ska skrivas. Eventuella animationer och interaktiva delar skall tas fram. Kopplingar till sociala medier görs, etc. Man kan (och bör) avsluta detta steg med en testfas för att identifiera buggar. Strukturella missar borde ha identifierats tidigare. Annars är projektet klart för lansering.

En uppföljning är ofta på sin plats. Detta är dock något som alldeles för ofta glöms bort, man levererar och går vidare. Några månader efter en sajt sjösatts kan man lätt se om det är något som saknas eller är överflödigt.

Med denna modell identifierar man tidigt vilken typ av innehåll man ska ha på sajten, anpassar innehållet därefter och ger sökmotorerna bättre förutsättningar till att indexera innehållet. För det är just det som är nyckeln till en välbesökt sajt. Det och användarvänlighet får jag väl tillägga, men det är sådant som tas upp och beskrivs i steg 2 och 3.

Jag tror och hoppas att modeller likt den “nya” är något som blir allt vanligare hos webbyråer. Det är något som kräver expertiskunskap i alla delar och tyvärr finns det för många aktörer på marknaden som påstår att de “kan webben” , och då är det inte främst webbyårer jag tänker på…

Compelling content on your website is the essential key to attracting more searchers to your site – but not only more searchers, more relevant searchers who are actually looking for what you’re offering.

What Makes Good Web Content?

Think of a few sites that you like to visit again and again. What makes you keep coming back? Most likely, it’s compelling, relevant, and timely content. Quality articles, tutorials, tips, etc. compel the reader to come back again, and again, and maybe even email some of their friends to come too. The sites that are consistently top ranked in the search engine results have these things in common when it comes to content:

* Interesting,unique content that is well-written.
* Links that point the searcher to other parts of the site (and more well-written content). Links feed the spiders and compel better search results accordingly.
* Evergreen as well as updated content. “Evergreen” means that the information will not be outdated a month from now.

In addition, if searchers can find what they’re looking for on your site with a minimum of clicks, then you’ve got a very good chance of making them a return visitor. For instance, if your site is all about chickens, but you choose not to have the word chicken anywhere in your site content, then you are doing a disservice to your readers who are looking for chicken information. This is an extreme example but makes my point: quality Web content must be easy to find, and it must be relevant to what the searcher is looking for.

Scannable Text Is Vital

It’s important to keep in mind that Web surfers don’t necessarily always “read” your content. Instead, they scan the page, looking for stand-out words and sentences. This means that in order to attract searchers, you must not only write compelling content, but make it scannable. For instance, see these headlines I’ve got breaking up the article? That’s an example of writing scannable text – if you don’t want to read this entire article (and of course I hope you will, but this is an example), you can save some time by just scanning the page. Long, unbroken blocks of text tend to turn away visitors, for the very simple fact that they are difficult to read on a computer screen. So, in summary:

How To Write Good Web Content

* Keywords. You’ve worked hard on these keywords; make them stand out (bold, different font,headlines, etc.)
* Clear titles. Make it painfully clear what you are going to talk about. It’s fun to be clever and cute, but it can backfire on you. Search engine spiders just aren’t attuned to puns, cliches, or out of the ordinary slang terms.
* Be short and sweet.This is highschool English. Don’t cram as many ideas as possible into one paragraph; rather, use that paragraph to focus on only one idea.
* Sales language. Do you enjoy wading through a bunch of sales language to get to the meat of a story? Well, neither will your readers. Don’t inflate your writing with a lot of hot air; keep it down to earth.

These are just general guidelines for writing quality Web content. It’s not something that most people can master overnight,so give yourself some time, practice a lot, read a LOT, and always put yourself in your Web site visitor’s place to make your site as user-friendly as possible.

The web pages actually at the top of Google have only one thing clearly in common: good writing. Don’t get so caught up in the usual SEO sacred cows and bugbears, such as PageRank, frames, and JavaScript, that you forget your site’s content.

I was recently struck by the fact that the top-ranking web pages on Google are consistently much better written than the vast majority of what is read on the web.

Of course, that shouldn’t be a surprise, considering how often officials at Google proclaim the importance of good content.  Yet traditional SEO wisdom has little to say about good writing.

Does Google, the world’s wealthiest media company, really ignore traditional standards of quality in the publishing world? Does Google, like so many website owners, really get so caught up in the process of the algorithm that it misses the whole point? Apparently not.

Most common on-page website content success features

Whatever the technical mechanism, Google is doing a pretty good job of identifying websites with good content and rewarding them with high rankings.

I looked at Google’s top five pages for the five most searched-on keywords, as identified by WordTracker on 27 June 2005. Typically, the top five pages receive an overwhelming majority of the traffic delivered by Google.

The web pages that contained written content (a small but significant portion were image galleries) all shared the following features:

* Updating: Frequent updating of content, at least once every few weeks, and more often, once a week or more.
* Spelling and grammar: Few or no errors. No page had more than three misspelled words or four grammatical errors.
Note: spelling and grammar errors were identified by using Microsoft Word’s check feature, and then ruling out words marked as mis-spellings that are either proper names or new words that are simply not in the dictionary.
