Welcome to 2010!

I’m going to start the year off with yet another list except I won’t be limiting myself to “Top 10″ or “Top 20″ or whatever. I’ll be going chronologically, year by year (I didn’t put the albums in any specific order though) and if I thought it was a really good album, I’ll list it regardless of whether one year has four albums listed and another year only has two.

Looking back, the whole decade was pretty good for this rock/metal fan. The scene suffered greatly during the ’90s, but by 2000, the genre was turning the corner and I think most people had grown tired of depressed drug addicts and angry no-talent white rappers playing rock music. The legends were laying low during the ’90s and the next decade was made up of many comebacks, but that’s not to discount many newer acts who stepped up and played a vital role in rock ‘n’ roll.

2009 was good, can 2010 be better? With these albums penciled in for 2010 it looks like we’ll have another good year for rock ‘n’ roll because there’s tons I’m looking forward to! I’ve listed tentative release dates where I could.

Ratt – Infestation (March): Ratt is one of the best bands to spring from the L.A. metal scene, I can’t wait to hear some new music from that.

Scorpions – Sting In The Tail: Well, hopefully we’ll see some new Scorpions. They haven’t gotten a U.S. distribution deal yet, but in this day of the internet, I don’t foresee any problems getting my hands on an import. According to the band, they’re going back to their “early ’80s” sound and scrapping the modern style they had on Humanity: Hour I. That’s a shame because I remember Klaus Meine being pretty adamant about the band not writing anymore “eighties” songs and I like Humanity a lot (which seemed to imply there’d be a sequel). Oh well, I liked 2004’s Unbreakable a lot too (the band’s most recent attempt at having that classic Scorpions sound), so either style they want is good with me.

Avantasia – The Wicked Symphony & Angel of Babylon (April 3): Edguy’s Tobias Sammet, one of my favorite vocalists, is back with his side project and he’s got two albums coming at us at once on the same day. The Scarecrow was really good and Sammet has tons of guest musicians lined up again, I just hope he hasn’t spread himself too thin by releasing two albums’ worth of material.

Accept: The band has reunited and Mark Tornillo (from TT Quick) is standing in for Udo Dirkschneider on vocals. I’m not a big Accept fan, but I like TT Quick, so I’ll give this one a chance. Supposedly the album is already done… so release it already!

Exodus – The Atrocity Exhibition… Exhibit B: The Human Condition (Spring): I’m trying out more thrash these days, so I’m willing to try this only having ever heard a few Exodus songs.

Peter Criss (April): I was surprised to see a recent interview where Peter said he’d have a new album coming out in 2010. The only album of his I’ve owned is his KISS solo album, but I liked parts of his other albums as well. I didn’t pick up One for All due to poor reviews and also because it wasn’t rock ‘n’ roll but Peter is aware of the criticisms about that release and promises a rock album this time around. We’ll see…

Bruce Kulick – BK3 (February 2): Speaking of ex-KISS members… This is a bit of a cheat because I already own the album because Bruce’s management was kind enough to send me a copy for review but I can’t wait until we get closer to the release date so I can talk about it and then everyone can go buy it. Now we just need Vinnie Vincent to crawl out from under his rock and release an album!

Rob Zombie – Hellbilly Deluxe 2: Noble Jackals, Penny Dreadfuls and the Systematic Dehumanization of Cool (February 2): I missed out on The Sinister Urge and didn’t care much for Educated Horses, but Rob can usually deliver at least a handful of good tunes some I’m looking forward to this sequel to his best solo album.

Stone Temple Pilots (Spring): STP is my favorite “alternative” band and Velvet Revolver never lived up to their potential, IMO, so I’m glad to see Weiland back where he belongs.

Raven – Walk Through Fire (March 29): I have one Raven album in my collection and I liked it but I haven’t kept up with the band. This album was released in Japan earlier in 2009 but finally gets U.S. release in 2010. I didn’t even know they had a new album out until a few months ago, but I’ve heard that its pretty good.

Overkill – Ironbound (late January): I bought my first Overkill album a month or so ago and I liked it, so why not give the new stuff a shot?

Dream Evil – In the Night (late January): I missed their last release, but I loved their two previous albums. Dream Evil is one of metal’s best kept secrets.

Van Halen: Maybe? Eddie says he has tons of music written and that its just a matter of life settling down and then seeing what Roth likes. I wouldn’t hold my breath but it would easily be the biggest release of the year. I can see a Walmart exclusive deal going down.

Alice Cooper: Alice commented a few months ago he was writing for a new album and he’s kept a pretty steady pace of releasing albums over the last decade, so I’m sure we’ll see it sometime in 2010.

Armored Saint – La Raza (April 16): I love John Bush’s voice and I’m happy to see he moved on without Anthrax even if he’s already back in that band. It’s just a shame his being back in Anthrax probably means there will be very little touring/promotion for this release.

Fozzy – Chasing the Grail (January 26): Fozzy is a decent band, I’m not too impressed with “Martyr No More” though. I’ll wait for reviews, but it is on my radar.

Sebastian Bach: Bach has been working on two different albums at once for quite some time — one country and then a rock album that’s to be the follow-up to Angel Down but he has recently stated the country album is on hold and its full steam ahead for writing & recording the rock album. Angel Down was one of 2007’s best albums so I have high hopes for this one.

Still waiting for… (albums that were originally planned for 2009)

Iron Maiden: I guess doing a hugely successful world tour and DVD took precedence over recording new music. It happens. Hopefully the band will hunker down now and give us a new release.

Aerosmith:  Honestly, I don’t expect anything from Aerosmith considering all the drama that’s going on, but maybe Aerosmith sans Steven Tyler will put out something with a different singer..?

Anthrax – Worship Music: This was supposed to come out in 2009 with Dan Nelson on vocals, but he got kicked out (the band says he quit) for some undefined reason and now John Bush is back. Its expected they’ll scrap Nelson’s vocals in favor of Bush’s, but its entirely possible they may write brand new material. If I was Bush, I wouldn’t want to sing the new stuff, especially considering how quickly they dropped him a few years ago in favor of reuniting for Joey Belladonna (Do you see a pattern with how Anthrax treats their singers?).

Slash – Slash & Friends (April): Progress on this one seems to have gone a lot slower than intended, but I guess that comes with the territory with you’re basically doing a  release full of all-star cameos. There’s so many different timetables you have to operate on. This could actually end up being a mess given the variety of artists involved or end up being really good, but its Slash so I gotta have it.

Os dois fizeram um dueto em “Taxi Driver”, um dos hits do Hanoi Rocks. Vale à pena assistir.

O Hanoi Rocks se separou há pouco tempo, mas Michael Monroe já está gravando seu primeiro álbum solo com o baixista Sami Yaffa, que tocou no Hanoi Rocks nos anos 80 e hoje faz parte da nova formação do New York Dolls.

“Há alguns boatos de que eu e Sami Yaffa estamos trabalhando juntos e fico muito feliz de poder confirmá-lo. Sami Yaffa, de fato, tocará baixo na minha nova banda e no meu novo álbum. Estamos escrevendo algumas músicas juntos e tal. Estamos muito contentes com esse novo projeto, principalmente porque tudo está saindo como uma verdadeira banda, e não eu e alguns músicos de apoio, mesmo que o nome seja Michael Monroe.”

For many years I worked on pharmaceutical advertising launching several well known drugs. I know it’s considered controversial by some, but I enjoyed learning about the various medical conditions and hearing from sufferers etc. Don’t even get me started on Prostates!

#9 -I *Heart* Bach

Given my classical music background I liked them both, but in High School I had a big thing for the one on the right.  I saw him at the Hippodrome in London and stumbled up to him with my arm extended and said something pithy like “Are you Sebastian Bach?”

My very first job out of college was selling yellow page advertising door to door for the university phone directory. To my chagrin I was the top sales person out of 300+!

A Steven Tyler le buscan sustituto

La legendaria banda Aerosmith se encuentra en estos momentos en una etapa de crisis, debido a que su cantante Steven Tyler se encuentra prácticamente en el limbo, tratando de poner orden a su vida, por lo que prefirió salir de la banda, aunque existen rumores de que volvió a recaer fuertemente en las drogas.

Por su parte el guitarrista Joe Perry comenzará una gira en Canadá con su banda Joe Perry Project, abriendo para los Mötley Crüe, durante enero y febrero del 2010.

Por otro lado se habla que Aerosmith está buscando un nuevo cantante para seguir vivos, pero la historia de esta banda comprueba que cuando han tocado sin sus integrantes originales de plano son un real fracaso, aunque también la mala relación que han llevado, más sus problemas con los estupefacientes, también ha provocado que su gran nivel musical  baje a la más pura mediocridad.

Así que pensar que Aerosmith sobreviva sin Steven Tyler, cuando su voz  es prácticamente el sello del grupo, es una idea que sus fans podrían considerar ridícula  y provoca cuestionamientos serios sobre el juicio de los demás integrantes de Aerosmith. 

Aerosmith sin Tyler, sería como los Rolling Stones sin Mick Jagger  o Metallica sin James Hetfield, sin embargo ya comienzan a decirse nombres de quién podría sustituirlo y aquí les damos algunas opciones.  

Tom Keifer, quien fuera el frontman de Cinderella, podría ser un sustituto con afán de revancha, porque seguramente conoce al dedillo el material de Aerosmith. Recordemos que Tom se vestía igual de Steven Tyler y hasta tomaba de la misma forma el micrófono. Sería un renacer para este talentoso cantante y compositor, pero esto es sólo un deseo de Inquisidor71, ya que las últimas noticias que se tienen de este talentoso músico es que perdió la voz, debido a unos nódulos en sus cuerdas vocales.

John Corabi fue brevemente el cantante de Mötley Crüe, en la etapa en que esta banda quiso cambiar su sonido radicalmente, pero sin buenos resultados. A pesar de todo, la calidad de este cantante es incuestionable y podría musicalmente dar el ancho en la música de Aerosmith, pero no es tan dinámico en sus movimientos;  nadie baila como Tyler.

Chris Robinson de The Black Crowes podría ser otro candidato ideal, ya que domina esa mezcla de blues-rock con maestría. Quizás tendría que dejar de lado un poco la banda que lo ha hecho famoso para probar qué se siente subirse  al escenario con esta gran banda.

Stephen Pearcy ex cantante de Ratt, modernizó con esta banda, el hard-rock  de los años 80’s. Aunque muchos los comparaban con Def Leppard, la realidad es que su mayor influencia era Aerosmith, sólo que eran más dinámicos en las guitarras. La voz agresiva de este cantante haría un efecto interesante en la música de la banda que dirige Joe Perry.

Sebastian Bach es un intérprete que a pesar de salir de Skid Row hace varios años, ha mantenido su fama con participaciones en series de televisión y en realitys, así como con participaciones en Broadway, así como en uno que otro disco solista.

Su voz ha sido considerada una de las mejores del heavy metal, pero ahí está el problema, no se identifica mucho con el rock-blues, pero seguramente se pondría a ensayar con todo para ser adorado por los fans de Aerosmith.

Josh Todd de Buckcherry es dinámico en el escenario y tiene una voz rocanrolera de primer nivel, quizás sea el que más se adapte a las necesidades de Aerosmith. Por algo los lectores de la revista Rolling Stone lo tienen ubicado como el principal candidato para sustituir a Steven Tyler.

David Johansen quien fuera el frontman de New York Dolls también es otro candidato favorito para entrar a Aerosmith, sin embargo no creo que logre el nivel por el cual se hizo famoso. Sin embargo, si conserva su dinamismo en el escenario podría salir adelante en esta hipotética empresa.

Axl Rose fue influenciado tremendamente por Aerosmith, sino chequen su versión en vivo con los Guns N’ Roses de “Mama Kin”. Y en realidad es el único que lo veo adecuado para la música de esta banda, ya que tiene una gran voz con perfectos  agudos y graves, así como un estupendo manejo escénico. Pero si fuera invitado, su ego probablemente se lo impediría.

Cormac Neeson de la banda hard-rockera The Answer también es mencionada por algunos medios como un ideal sustituto, aunque en mi particular punto de vista no podría mantener el ritmo dramático que impone Tyler en vivo.

David Coverdale, líder de Whitesnake le cambiaría la cara a Aerosmith. Si con Jimmy Page cantó como Robert Plant, por qué no podría hacerlo como Steven Tyler, además su manejo en las vocales del blues-rock y del hard-rock es de grandes ligas.

Nota: También se menciona a David Lee Roth,  a Iggy Pop  y a un tipo que participó en American Idol, llamado Adam Lambert, pero sobre este último, a pesar de su talento, quizás su homosexualidad no sea del agrado de los legendarios Aerosmith.

As I was sitting in the dentist’s chair yesterday, I began thinking about all the silly crushes I had over the years. Well, they weren’t silly at the time and all of them revolved around musicians. Mind you, the idea for this post came about because of my bid to ignore the scraping, whirring, and strange noises going on in my mouth. No, I didn’t have anything but a cleaning done, but it just isn’t natural to hear all that crap going on inside your head. I think that’s why people don’t like the dentist.

But that isn’t the point of this post. No, I’m going to give a pictorial list of my crushes through the years. I hope you find this as funny as I did.

First off:

Yes, Duran Duran. I mentioned in my previous post how I used to daydream (in 3rd grade) how they were going to come save me from my class. They were pretty and non-threatening to a kid.

Next:

Sebastian Bach of Skid Row. I was a teenager by this time. Thirteen or fourteen. He was beautiful and he could SING! Plus those leather pants really were hot. Gr-owl! Of course, this is when my penchant for bad boys developed.

Next:

Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots. This was high school. I saw that hair, those cheekbones, and I forgot all about poor Sebastian. Scott W was like a breath of fresh air. I still hold some affection for him because he’s so crazy cool (even though he’s had some um, problems over the years).

Next:

Chris Cornell formerly of Soundgarden and Audioslave. This was my college crush. Those moody eyes, yum. I thought he was deep and sensitive, I mean, c’mon! Doesn’t he look like a heartbreaker to you??

More recently though:

Mr. Rob Zombie. Don’t ask me why. He doesn’t exactly fit the usual mold of ‘hot’, but I find him very sexy. He’s got the long hair, the beard, the tattoos. He’d be my mother’s worst nightmare come to life. Hubba, hubba!

So, that’s a pictorial list of my crushes through the years. Do you agree/disagree? Who were your crushes? (Don’t forget to vote for what kind of Fantasy Man you’d like to see!)

Note to self – GPS Navigators are useless in the capital city of one’s own country. Useless bastards making me late for one of my all time favourites (to enter the scene in the late 80s and still be going strong)!

The security guard checks my ticket, the doors swing open and nothing pleases me more then to hear that all too familiar catchy hair metal riff of “sweet little sister.”

Oh hell yeah – now this is what dreams are made of. Catchy, hard and fast, balls out rock n roll!

The enmore theater was littered with fans from teens all the way up to the middle aged both in the upstairs and in the downstairs. In the mosh – no idiots and no “hard core” dancing but just old fashioned rockers air guitaring, fists pumping and devil horns pointing to the sky.

Songs to pass from their infamous self titled album all the way through to their current ‘06 release “Revolutions Per Minute.”

This is a band having suffered lineup change after lineup change without losing a sight for what makes killer rock n roll. With individuals like Bassist Rachel Bolan and Guitarist Dave “The Snake” Sabo, the main driving force behind the band and since the initial formation of the Skid’s, there is just no stopping them!

A few individuals right beside me in the crowd chanting after each song “BRING BACK SEBASTIAN” – obviously referring to Bach – the original frontman – in this case I can only dismiss their points of view as drunken ramblings. That, or the meathead perspective? Haha!

Without sounding like a complete groupie, vocalist Johnny Solinger Kicks ASS!!! Hitting every high note that made Sebastian Bach famous (or infamous) with those high screams and punky rabblings in songs like “Get The F*ck Out” to the angsty ballad of “Youth Gone Wild”. A rock show with all the favourites played definitely is what the doctor ordered.

Be a Skid Row original lineup purist if you like but at the end of the day Solinger does just as good a job as Bach ever did.     Make way for radio hit single “I Remember You” as the acoustic hit we all love.

It sure is cigarette lighter waving time and just as the rest of the band comes back to the stage to electrify this almost unplugged song the crowd echoes word after word as we all smile in unison.

If I never see you live again, Skid Row, I will definitely Remember You!

“Bring ‘Em Bach Alive” é o primeiro registro da carreira solo de Sebastian Bach, o frontman lendário do Skid Row e dono de uma das vozes mais potentes do hard rock. Apesar dos instrumentistas do Skid Row fazerem falta em algumas músicas onde exige-se uma pegada mais melódica “In A Darkened Room” ou a feroz “Monkey Business” a banda teve uma performance fantástica, não deixando a desejar em nenhuma música.

O destaque da vez é a voz de Sebastian Bach, que não se perdeu após 4 anos desde sua saída do Skid Row. O mesmo havia se “vingado” com um disco feito com uma superbanda chamada “The Last Hard Men”, que contava com o guitarrista Jimmy Flemion [Frogs], o baixista Kelley Deal [Breeders] e o baterista Jimmy Chamberlin [Smashing Pumpkins]. O curioso também é que “Bring ‘Em Bach Alive” conta com diversas músicas entre elas os clássicos do Skid Row “I Remember You”  e “18 and Life!”.

Enfim, um disco recomendadíssimo para os fãs do bom e velho hard rock.. Clique na capa do CD para fazer o download!

When it comes to measurements of one’s celebrity status, falling in a close second to a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood is having a sandwich named after you. This past week, several fast food restaurants have added some new fare to their menus, inspired by and named after some has-been musicians.

Wendy’s Sebastian Bach-inator Jr. Cheeseburger contains hamburger meat 20 years past its sell-by date, a generous slab of processed Velveeta and 2 pieces of Purina Beggin’ Strips.

According to his website, Bach is currently looking to fill the bass and guitar spots in his band. Unfortunately, he says he can’t afford to pay his band members to rehearse or write songs with him. There is no information on Bach’s site as to whether his band members are required to pay for their own leather pants, but in any case they are likely tax deductible as a business expense. Luckily for the musicians in Bach’s band, the Bach-inator Jr. cheeseburger is priced to meet all budgets at just $1.39—and with what he pays, it’s all they’ll be able to afford to eat.

The Sammy Hagar Hambaygar

With it’s generous allotment of pickles, condiments and whathaveyou, McDonald’s Sammy Hagar Hambaygar will leave you struggling to “finish what you started”. But not in a good way. If you do manage to choke it down, you’ll soon find yourself driving a lot faster than 55 to make it to the nearest shitter.

This marks the second time in recent memory that Hagar has been honored—the previous tribute coming when Beck asked the Red Rocker to model for the sleeve of his Odelay album.

Cuando una agrupación realiza un concierto de rock no siempre las cosas salen bien, a veces los fanáticos se convierten en los peores enemigos agrediendo a sus ídolos, o son los propios miembros de una banda que pierden los estribos.

Hicimos una minuciosa búsqueda de videos donde se muestran este tipo de agresiones, donde podría considerarse a un Axl Rose como exagerado cuando algún fan avienta cosas al escenario,  quizás ese rigor debió tener el equipo de Damageplan, y se habría evitado el asesinato de un gran guitarrista como Dimebag Darrell.

Estos son algunos videos muy violentos:

Definitivamente Sabastian Bach, en sus tiempos con Skid Row tomó la peor decisión cuando respondió la agresión de un fan que le dio un botellazo, ya que al regresar el objeto dio en la cara de una fanática que no tenía nada que ver con el incidente. En el video se ve la herida del polémico cantante. 

Henry Rollins aguantó los golpes de este fan, pero sólo para tener más adrenalina para responder, definitivamente el admirador debe haberse arrepentido de provocar el ataque.

Una leyenda como Angus Young no debería tener en su curriculum momentos desagradables, porque es una figura respetada en el ambiente del rock mundial, pero un supuesto fan no pensó lo mismo y le aventó cerveza. El guitarrista de AC/DC hizo lo correcto al dejar todo en manos de la seguridad.

Keith Richards de los Rolling Stones no lo pensó dos veces en agredir al fan que se subió al escenario mientras tocaban “Satisfaction”, para el guitarrista su escenario es sagrado.

Tarja Turunen en el año 2000 en Guadalajara, México, recibió una agresión sexual en pleno escenario, de un fan que se abalanzó sobre ella para manosearla, sin que la seguridad o los propios miembros de Nightwish reaccionaran pronto para defenderla.

Kurt Cobain se llevó tremenda golpiza de un integrante de su propia seguridad, quien respondió al enojo del extinto guitarrista de Nirvana, porque lo sacó de los brazos del público.

Tremendo empujón recibió el guitarrista de Oasis, Liam Gallaguer, de un fan que también deseaba golpear a su hermano Noel. El susto para ambos fue alto.

En un concierto de Kiss también hubo enojo de parte de Paul Stanley, debido a que un fan no dejaba de molestar con un láser. No se llegó a los golpes, pero las advertencias no cesaron de parte de la banda de pintarrajeados.

Axl Rose es todo un divo y pide atención al 100 por ciento cuando actúa. Se ha peleado con un fan en plena actuación, ha suspendido presentaciones de Guns N’ Roses y hasta se ha puesto a regañar a miles de espectadores como pasó en Argentina.

Nikki Sixx se la pasó muy agresivo en México en una presentación en el 2000 con Motley Crue, aunque seré sincero, la escena que se ve en este video no la vi en vivo (yo acudí a esa presentación), pero hubo otra más violenta cuando interpretaban “Home Sweet Home”, donde hasta Vince Neil le entró a los puños contra unos fans.

La mayor tragedia en un escenario de rock se dio con el asesinato del virtuoso guitarrista Dimebag Darrell, cuando comenzaba una presentación con Damageplan, su segundo grupo después de la disolución de Pantera.

 En este video se ve a Dimebag de espaldas, luego  entra su asesino, sin que la seguridad lo detenga antes, aunque después lo tiran al piso. La  cámara no capta la violenta muerte, aunque se ve el horror de sus roadies, cuando ven que le han disparado al guitarrista. Hasta la fecha la comunidad del heavy metal sigue lamentando la partida de un músico que hizo avanzar con su gran técnica este género.

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, 4th movement-Allegro by Karajan

When my deceased mother was first diagnosed with a life threatening sickness years ago, I tried some to comfort myself and ease the anxiety that I felt. The very first music which I started to listen was the religious music of Cary Landry and that of John Michael Talbot.

Then that graduated to more serious stuff like classical music. My first classical music tape was that of Mozart. That was the first time I become acquainted with pieces like “The Marriage of Figaro.” That prompted me to buy the tapes of  classical composers later.

I rummage in the record bars in Cagayan de Oro City to find tapes of Ludwig Van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, Peter Tchaikovsky and Antonio Vivaldi. I went to Astrovision in LKKS, (when the LKKS arcade is not yet airconditioned) some record bars along Divisoria area and there I was able to get several tapes. Later I bought some Brahms, Chopin, Verdi, Handel and Mendelsohn. The last classical music I bought was an expensive CD of Camille Saint Saens in his symphony Organ sometime in 2001 at Robinson’s Place in Manila. That was the last time I commune myself with classical music.

Now that my Mama is gone, I have this feeling of listening back to classical music. I felt alone, sad and lonely. Somehow classical music will fill the emptiness inside and around me aside from being always uplifting to the spirit. Classical music is in some way have a significant connection to the spiritual. Like the Roman Catholic Church, Classical Music is enduring, and timeless.

Classical music uplifts my soul in this time of great grief.

The video I am featuring above is one of my favorites. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, 4th movement. Its grand! I always exclaimed  “Bravo!” after the last notes are played.

Here’s also another favorite, Bach’s Toccata and Fugue, a music you can relate to Dracula movies. But its nice and uplifting music.

When you first put this disc in, you are hit in the face with the noisy and seemingly unfocused title track. First impressions are important, and Bach really messed up by making this the first song on the disc. It’s awful; there’s really no other word for it. But if you listen past this song, you’ll hear one of the best hard rock albums to be released in the last decade.

Bach recruited the help of GNR frontman Axl Rose, even used a song Rose co-wrote with Johnny Chromatic, “Stuck Inside.” While Rose’s vocal contributions to the record are nothing to write home about, “Stuck Inside” is a great song that just might give you whiplash. “American Metalhead” is an awesome anthem, and “Negative Light” has a great opening bass groove. Sebastian croons on “By Your Side,” reminiscent of the Skid Row classic “I Remember You.”

Overall, a fantastic album that should be a part of every headbanger’s music library.
