A fuerza de maxis propios (búscalos en Eskimo) y de elevar hasta las nubes el factor de sugerencia de temas de Grace Jones, Friendly Fires, Cut Copy, Sebastian Tellier, Lindstrøm, MGMT o Bloc Party por la vía de las remezclas, Stephen Fasano y Vito Deluca, esa pareja de belgas que responde al nombre de Aeroplane se ha ganado a pulso un lugar de honor dentro de esa nueva armada europea que gusta de empapar los postulados rítmicos y texturales del cosmic disco en nubes de caspa italo y charcos de melancolía electro-pop.

Hace poco nos sorprendieron recopilando para la revista Mixmag quince gemas baleáricas -cosmic classics and synth smashes, reza la portada- en “Disco Balearica”, y ahora, de manera un tanto tangencial, nos enteramos de que Aeroplane andan rematando estos días la grabación de su esperado álbum de debut. Y en menudas compañías… Soulwax y Bertrand Burgalat se están ocupando de las tareas de producción de un álbum al que las chicas de Au Revoir Simone han prestado sus gargantas de seda. Ya lo hicieron en la remezcla que Aeroplane hicieron del “Paris” de Friendly Fires, y lo brillante de los resultados aún salta al oído. Poco más detalles se conocen de momento sobre un disco que debería llegar a las tiendas en agosto.

Servidores, que conste en acta, estamos que nos mordemos las uñas, tensos ante la espera del disco que, si nada se tuerce, tendrá que tomarle el relevo a alhajas como el “Where you go I go too” de Lindstrom o los  “Yearbook ” de Studio, es decir, un masajeo firme de las meninges y los músculos del solomillo a base de bajos funkoides, oleaje de sintetizadores antiguos retocados con las técnicas modernas, melodías plenas de caspa italo, teclados playeros y la vista siempre muy puesta en las galaxias exteriores, que si le llaman cosmic disco es por alguna razón. Si todo el disco va a ser así, habrá que encargar una remesa de baberos, que los vamos a necesitar. ¿Que no?

As the night grew late, and the end of the We Love Ministry of Sound festival rapidly approached, the atmosphere of the Capitol backroom (more often referred to as Amplifier) intensified. Mysterious French musician, Danger, was due to begin his live set at 1am and those waiting for him nervously checked their watches with the knowledge of the 2am curfew imposed last minute on the organisers of the festival due to liquor licensing restrictions. Walking onto stage behind a pair of dark sunglasses, Danger discreetly set-up his equipment, before ducking behind the mixing desk to reappear in his trademark black mask. The crowd was a mixture of die-hard fans, curious bystanders and large-eyed, late night enthusiasts who were all about to experience something pretty special.

As Danger’s logo flashed up onto the television screens, set up at the rear of the stage, it was clear the show was going to be a fair bit different from what had gone on earlier in the evening. Danger, jumping around, emotions hidden by his mask cast, created a menacing form combined with his intense music and exciting visuals. Danger, who is also a graphic designer, creates and utilizes clips from 80’s cartoons, hammer horror films, with bloody faces and creepy men stalking around graveyards, 80’s action films such as Predator and Rambo and lots and lots of explosions. Playing a set featuring some of his newest tracks, including 88h88, the biggest reaction from the crowd was for one of the few songs featuring vocals, 11h30. The most interesting reaction from the crowd was the man who climbed up onto the stage to jump around and dance, remarkably keeping his energy up for a whole song before climbing onto a speaker causing him to be removed.

Getting the cue from the sound tech that he had five minutes left to play, Danger brought back his visuals, which he had temporarily cut in order to fit his set into his shortened playing time. As soon as the opening notes of his remix of Sebastian Tellier Divine blasted out the crowd dutifully responded knowing this would be the final chance they had to express their appreciation for the show they had been experiencing. Divine brought the crowd together in a glorious high however Danger was not done with us yet, as the final notes of Mr Tellier’s song drifted through the speakers Danger launched into a ludicrous hardcore dance track, full of trance stabs and vocals, with a bass and drum line that worked up the tired bodies of the crowd into one last final frenzy. Pushing past the 2am curfew Capitol staff came running onto the stage to cut Danger off but he did not relent without a struggle, jumping about in a fit along with his final brain killing tune, until his sound was abruptly cut. After the drama involved in the ending of his set, Danger, once more slipped below the mixing desk to reappear with his sunglasses to vanish off into the sweaty crowd bringing a close to what was a very entertaining winter festival, We Love Ministry of Sound.

Another guy said… I need to find out what that final track Danger played was, it was awesome.

Time caught up with me in the end. The second semi-final came and went, and as someone else was using the TV, I decided it was as good a chance as any to sleep off a late night and an early start and missed it. Consequently and, it has to be said, uncharacteristically, I’m going to withhold judgment .

With apologies to Cyprus, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary and the Netherlands, I’m going to skip straight to the end. Something of a relief, really. I was pretty much out of Balkan jokes. Now, to the five songs that made it straight through to the final. Starting with…

FRANCE

First appearance: 1956
Wins: 5 (1958, 1960, 1962, 1969, 1977)

Song: Et S’Il Fallait Le Faire

If anything, France have even more of a right to be aggrieved about Eurovision than we do. Like the UK, they haven’t had a top ten in seven years, and haven’t won the thing since Thierry Henry was crawling around in nappies exclaiming the only three words he knew (‘va’, ‘va’ and ‘voom’). The difference, though, is that while the UK have been whinging and faffing about with rap not once but twice, France have churned out a succcession of irresistibly quirky songs – not all of them extraordinary, but most of them good and original, which is all you really ask for amid a sea of identikit crooning and uniformly bad accents. Last year’s entry, ‘Divine’ by Sebastian Tellier, was refreshingly bonkers, while ‘A Chaque Pas’ by Jonatan Cerrada in 2004 would have been a perfectly normal, functional ballad, had it not been for an alarming ten-foot woman on stilts dancing next to him.

Furthermore, France don’t moan about losing like we do. The country affects a collective Gallic shrug and gets on with being France, which is an understandable and worthy pursuit. They don’t expect to win, you see: there’s no PR gubbins about this year being “the year we finally take it seriously”, no exhaustive promotional jetset, no private meeting with Putin. In fact, the very point of Eurovision seems to jar with French sensibilities – not just the competiveness and point scoring, but the winning.

Ironically, it’s for this reason that you’d love France to win, and here is the song that might well do it. ‘Et S’Il Fallait Le Faire’ (And He Fellated Himself At The Fair) perfectly evokes the 1950s cocktail bar, with an out-of-tune piano in the corner and the view of the stage obscured by a thick fug of cigarillo smoke. It oozes class and glamour, and is in many ways far too good for Eurovision. Patricia Kaas, already a successful singer in France, has that splendid 40-Gauloises-par-jour voice that you suspect can only just about manage to belt out three minutes of faultless singing before needing to cough up a blood clot.

Love it. Win, please.

RUSSIA

First appearance: 1994
Wins: 1 (2008)
Artist: Anastasia Prikhodko
Song: Mamo

How on earth do you follow Dima Bilan? In fact, how do you follow three consecutive top three finishes? Thing is, that’s not 22-year-old Anastasis Prikhodko’s biggest problem.

Her biggest problem, it would seem, is that the performer representing Russia, in Moscow, was born in the Ukraine. As a act of national self-emasculation, it would rank somewhere alongside… ooh, I don’t know, having host the Eurovision Song Contest and then getting an Irishman and a Swede to present it.

No, you know what, perhaps her biggest problem is that she actually tried to enter the song in the Ukrainian national selection contest first, but was disqualified for performing the wrong song. Prikhodko launched a legal challenge, but before a decision was made had already nipped over the border to enter the Russian competition. On winning the Russian vote, she faced allegations that the vote was rigged and was criticised for singing part of the song in its original Ukrainian.

No, actually, I reckon her biggest problem that tape of her on a TV show saying she “doesn’t like Chinese people or blacks”. Or the accusations of being a Nazi sympathiser. Or her brother going on Neo-Nazi marches.

I’m fucking with you, because none of these are actually her biggest problem. Her biggest problem – and what a boring, time-honoured biggest problem this is – is that she can’t hold a tune. ‘Mamo’ is actually a sodding good song. You could imagine it on state television, soundtracking a grainy advert for borsch in a can. It’s spoiled, though, by her grating warble, which disintegrates completely at the end into a primeval roar that brings to mind a grizzly bear who’s just had his dinner nicked by a cheeky eagle. So, not good. But that’s not to say it won’t win. It is Russia, after all. Not only do they have an extensive diaspora beyond its borders, but the case of Alexander Litvinenko, the ex-KGB officer who was given a fatal dose of radioactive poisoning after he voted for Malta, shows that diaspora to be both pliant and obedient.

GERMANY

Germany’s never been afraid to go against the grain in Eurovision. 1998’s ‘Guildo Hat Euch Lieb’ was one of the first comedy, as opposed to novelty, songs to take to the Eurovision stage, since when we’ve had a dash of country and some Rat Pack swing, which was actually really good.

This year, it’s swing again, although with something of a maverick bent. Thee ‘Alex’ is Alex Christensen, a techno-DJ-cum-pop-producer, while the ‘Oscar’ is Oscar Loya, is a Mexican-American theatre singer. Together they’ve come with something I’m tentatively going to call ‘Euroswing’. Christensen’s techno heritage (if that’s not an oxymoron) is faintly audible, while Loya is clearly a man in love not only with the sound of his own voice, but the look of his own face and very probably the taste of his own burps. His bullish charisma is what’s required of him here.

Of course, it’ll sink without trace like all German entries do. Not just entries, of course. U-boats, as well.

SPAIN

First appearance: 1961
Wins: 2 (1968, 1969)
Artist: Soraya
Song: La Noche Es Para Mí

Being the last act to perform is probably quite a nervewracking undertaking. You’re aware that most of the viewers at home have already made up their minds over who they’re going to vote for, and that only the most extraordinary, outstanding performance will sway them. You’ve had to nervously lay off the booze all day while the eejits who went out first have long since hit the bar and turned the green room blue with their drunken patois. The sound engineers and lighting operators are checking their watches and looking forward to the buffet, and make no secret of their contempt at you for keeping them from their lamb koftas. You notice members of the audience making an early dash for the toilets. Backstage, you can hear the head of the support staff barking directions to an army of cleaners with brooms. It’s all most disorienting.

Unfortunately, neither Soraya nor her song quite have enough about them to deter the people of Europe from their early toilet breaks. It’s just another pop song, with a verse, and a chorus, and trite lyrics about dancing and setting yourself free. It comes as no surprise to find out that it was originally a Greek song, adopted and adapted by Spain after nobody else wanted it. It’s nothing more than Eurovision fluff that will pass unnoticed and unmourned into the ether. Which isn’t entirely Spain’s fault – after all, they didn’t know they were going on last.

Today was not a good day.

Pain Score: 8.5/10. I’d never give it a 10. 10 is reserved for the day I’m being chewed to pieces by a shark…and thankfully…that isn’t today. 

But what can you do? You just have to make it though. There isn’t anyway to tell when it will ease, so you breathe slow, make it through a minute, then an hour, and eventually a whole day. At times like these, 60 seconds feels like a lifetime, and the thought of feeling it for 24 hours is unbearable. This is what chronic pain looks like. You live with it, it is a part of you – it doesn’t leave – just varys from day to day. I don’t usually let it beat me, but sometimes the little bastard creeps up from behind & wins the days battle. Git. So you take another pill, prop yourself up with cushions, and try to think of happy things.

I tried it all today. I thought of booking a last minute trip to Ibiza…That island always takes the edge off somehow…then got sad as I knew I wouldn’t be able to fly like this. I watched funny programmes on TV, then got frustrated because nothing made me laugh. I tried to read but the words swam in front of my eyes, thanks to my best buddy, morphine. I couldn’t even get interested in any shopping – definitely a bad sign….

Can’t even sleep when it’s this bad. Nothing to do but wait it out, and know that it won’t kill me. Have filled myself up with meds, heaps of lemon and sugar pancakes and am cuddled up in bed with my favourite song and the puppy…who’s snoring.

Hospital again tomorrow.

So much hype over the recently released!… and blogged to death “Sebastian Tellier – Kilometer (Aeroplane Italo 84 Remix)” …you don’t need to have heard much italo to realise where Aeroplane got their influence. Mabye just the same chord changes and arpegged bass-line, Aeroplane have the great ability capturing the best elements of tunes from the past- this is a perfect example.  Aeroplane remix is good but should not over shadow the original!!!

} Sábado, dia 31 de Outubro, vai rolar Funhell @ Vegas Club.

A tradicional festa da Funhouse acaba de completar um ano e meio de existência e lançar um site. Como toda conquista merece uma comemoração, o trio Fabricio Miranda, Marcelo Fubah e Pomada resolveu celebrar os dois acontecimentos em uma festa no Vegas Club.

A Funhell 1.5, que acontece dia 31 de outubro, recebe pela primeira vez no Brasil o show da banda americana Hey Champ. Destaque em Chicago e reconhecidos nacionalmente, a banda ganhou projeção internacional com o hit “Cold Dust Girl” e a versão remix de “Beaches and Friends” dos brasileiros Database.

A ascensão na cena local levou o trio a um dos principais festivais americanos, o Lollapalloza. Além desse, fazem parte do currículo, o texano SXSW e uma tour pelo EUA abrindo os shows de Lupe Fiasco. Além do rapper, os americanos dividiram palco com nomes importantes como Justice, Sebastian Tellier, The Sounds, Midnight Juggernauts, Kid Sister, Datarock, The Bloody Beetroots, entre outros.

No dia 31, além dos americanos do Hey Champ, a Funhell 1.5 recebe o duo Roots Rock Revolution, Rafael Urenha (Party Íntima), e as irmãs Marina e Helena Sasseron (Chicks in Charge).

HEY CHAMP

Rockford, Illinois nos EUA, não é exatamente um berço de grandes talentos. Por enquanto, lançou para o mundo a lendária banda de rock Cheap Trick e o irmão mais velho do famoso programa de TV, “Blossom”. Dois garotos, Saam Hagshenas, 16, e Jonathan Marks, 13, foram fortemente influenciados pelos dois hits da sua cidade e acabaram formando uma banda.

Oito anos depois, em Chicago, eles reformularam a banda, dando origem ao Hey Champ. Mais experientes e sem dinheiro nenhum, sentindo a necessidade de adicionar teclados ao som da banda, Johathan chamou seu antigo amigo na Universidade de Princeton, Pete Dougherty. Equipado com sintetizadores e uma esperança, Pete deixou de lado sua conformidade musical e decidiu ser ousado.

O trio começou a ganhar reconhecimento em Chicago pela ótima veia pop e qualidade na produção sonora. Durante o verão de 2008, receberam um telefonema de Lupe Fiasco, que tinha conhecido a banda por meio do clipe de “Cold Dust Girl”. Em um mês, o Hey Champ saiu em uma turnê nacional abrindo os shows de Lupe, e começava as gravações do seu primeiro disco. No começo de 2009, “Cold Dust Girl” ganhou os clubes por todo o país. Com passagem por grandes festivais, uma turnê durante todo o ano, reconhecimento internacional da faixa “Cold Dust Girl”, e faltando pouco para o lançamento do seu primeiro álbum, o Hey Champ busca virar o terceiro grande hit nascido em Rockford.

I have been pretty slack at posting over the past few months… the summer is not the right season to be sitting in front of a computer but now I think I would rather be inside so I guess there will be some more bits and bobs appearing over the next few weeks.

The first ‘bit’ is the new video by Frightened Rabbit, a band whose songs seem to remind me purely of driving back into London on sunday evenings last year. I had a limited amount of tapes in the car. Guess they shouldn’t have made such a good album. FOOLS!

Anyway, this is the new track from their album set for release in spring next year which has no name yet. This song, as you can tell from the title of this post is called ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’. Don’t take that sentiment to heart kids unless you have a) massive armbands or b) massive bank debts.

Daha önce Lykke Li ve El Perro Del Mar’ın San Francisco sokaklarındaki performansını müzik defterine koymuştum. Ama blogotheque ekibini çok da araştırmamıştım. Ama bugün sitelerinde girdiğimde ve birkaç röportajlarını okuduğumda aslında ne kadar mükemmel bir proje olduğunu fark ettim..

Paris’te yaşayan bu guerilla ekip, müzik ve filmi sokaklarda, değişik mekanlarda bir araya getiriyorlar. Take Away Shows adı altında çektikleri bu canlı performansların özelliği farklı mekanlarda, spontane olmaları. Seçtikleri isimler de, çektikleri mekanlar da çok etkileyici! Bir asansörün içinde Arcade Fire, bir gitar dükkanının içinde Eric Truffaz, Teksas sokaklarında bir kamyonetin arkasında Jose Gonzales, nehrin ortasında bir teknede French Cowboys, kocaman bir mutfakta Efterklang, hareket halindeki bir minibüsün içinde Vampire Weekend, tuvalette Grizzly Bear veya süpermarkette Bowerbirds performansı izlemeyi kim istemez?

Fikir ortaya şöyle çıkmış.. Proje sahipleri Moon ve Chryde, Arcade Fire’ın Paris’teki konserinde sahneden inip herkesle birlikte sokağa çıkmasından ve performansını sokakta sergilemesinden çok etkilenmişler. “Aslında hepimizin müzikten istediği bu” diye düşünüp, Blogotheque’i, 2006 yılında kurmuşlar.

This month we gonna focus on Sebastian Tellier which is a french Singer, Songwriter and Multi-instrumentalist. He is currently signed to Record Makers, a French independent record label. He sings in English, French and Italian.

2001 The Sébastien Tellier story began with L’incroyable verite – A record filled with sorrow, made for crying under candlelight. A carefree album mixed by Quentin Dupieux, completely devoid of drums / percussion. An introspective journey to the boundaries of the universe and intimacy where Sebastien, drowsy and bedraggled, embarks on a search for lost time without leaving his bed (Pink Floyd, Robert Wyatt, a certain mindset of the 70’s). An entity borne out of wanderings in the gardens of French music. At Record Makers HQ (Air’s former label), the singularity of the record is thoroughly endorsed.

2004 Sébastien Tellier opens his bedroom window and discovers something crazy: the outside world. With his second album, Politics, (Tony Allen on drums, Philippe Zdar on production duties), he covers the globe in huge strides (Africa, US, South America …) to try and make sense of it all. La Ritournelle, an epic, romantic piece, really caused a stir. It convinced every listener of one thing – Sébastien Tellier is an important artist.

2006 After Sessions, a process of catching up and reinvigorating his repertoire (as well as Christophe’s sublime “Dolce Vita” ) with the help of Simon Dalmais on piano, Sébastien locked himself away into a Parisian recording studio Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (one half of Daft Punk) behind the controls to produce the next instalment of his adventures.

So in my last post I think I went a little political.  I hated on the Young Cons (musically, not really ideologically).   I indirectly and directly called tksama and schuyfi socialists, respectively.  I declared my own leanings–or at least the last two standing.  Because as we all know, in the real world, there are only winners and losers, first and last place.

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!

Basically, I’m putting it to you, the people, to choose.  Fred Falke or Sebastian Tellier?  In the battle between two hip Frenchmen, only one can emerge the victor.  For your approval, I submit a playlist of select tracks, one that you will play straight through and love every song.  Will it be a Falke remix that turns the tide?  Or an original Tellier production?  Falke’s sick basslines?  Or Tellier’s sexy videos?

In the end though, the choice is all yours.  All I have to say is this:

VOTE OR DIE!!!!!!

I felt inspired to do a set so after a lengthy search for music and a couple of false starts this is what I have.

Another music festival brought to you by the masterminds behind Coachella Music Festival. The Ooh la L.A. festival brings everything that is great of French Electronic music to the Music Box in Los Angeles!

That means yes yes yes Sebastien Tellier will be there opening up the first night. Any night you decide to attend should be worth it. I would just rather go see Sebastien…love me some french pop! Though I would love to see Nouvelle Vague. Love me some Bossa Nova meets New Wave.

Tickets are on sale NOW! The Three Day Pass isn’t bad, it’s at $65 and one day passes are $25. Like I said the music festivals have begun and they are going full force with the great lineups…if you can remember this summer into the fall, you weren’t drunk enough!

So on Tuesday night was our big A-Trak night. I must say the venue which was “Ole Madrid” before and now is called ”Voyeur” is not as nice as it looks on the website. . . .  The pictures looked nothing like the actual cub- Sorry Voyeur but whoever is in charge must be more organized- I was in the club industry before so I know how it is-   The decoration inside looked like they just went to target and purchased some plastic lamps and some semi-nice mirrors.    The lights are probably the only thing they have going for them.  I mean   the economy is bad but seriously for San Diego and being on 5th?? street hmmm no good.- –  Voyeur a 4.5 outta 10.  We got to Voyeur at 9:30-10 to get good parking  so we decided to swing by and went ahead and took a look inside . . . there was nobody there-  I mean Tuesday night and all, understandable but Starbucks next door was more happening!  We thought maybe it will get better by the end of the night . . . .  but it only went downhill.  A-Trak didn’t come on until 11:30 pm which is a little late but whatever- the dance floor was tiny and the bar was not at all impressive. We fortunately were up in the VIP but again not much difference. . . . Ole Madrid what happened???  Anyway,  I wont even mention the bathrooms.

Overall A-Trak was what we went for which was all that we expected.  Hope Voyeur steps up their game if they are going to continue to bring in good people.

My favorite concert so far has beenFischerspooner@ HOB.  Was excited about the new album and they definitely  impressed me!  With their strange handmade costumes, dancing, and performance art it just makes it a lot better.  Both Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner are incredible like always.   Only downside is that of course just like any other concert they put some of the shittiest bands up before and totally not enough of Fischerspooner . . . .  Some people even missed them because they were only live for about 30 min.  We were there early so we got a good spot!

Morrissey, Morrissey, Morrissey . . . . Love him and of course The Smiths but every time Coachella comes around the drive to the middle of nowhere in the heat gets to me. I much rather see him @ Universal Studios.  I mean Coachella was good when I was younger but seriously this year was my last one.  I will travel anywhere else but there. Within the crowds I felt like I should of been babysitting instead of enjoying the bands.  I mean 2o year olds grabbing here and there and trying to make out  . . .  I could be their older sister!! that was no fun-   But yes also went because of Paul bit of a Beatles fan as well.  Overall I loved Morrissey and his attitude like always.  He has a special place in my heart

It would be nice if I could see Sebastian Tellier. I have had some opportunities in the past but never really got around to them- booo for me!  I do regret it.  But still am looking forward to catching him soon- Love his new album “Sexuality” all the songs are divine. Hes got some really cool videos out too!

Last year I went to the Harbor to see Manu Chao in concert and it was awesome! Openiong act Plastilina Mosh which was also great-  Had been waiting to see him in concert for a long time and he finally made here to San Diego.   Got to meet Madjid Fahem who is the guitarist for Manu Chao he seriously works in perfect synch with Manu.  Very nice guy from France but that is a different story-

When we got tot he Embarcadero it was packed! I had no idea how many people actually knew of him even though most of them were foreigners.  Met some nice German people and of course all the Tijuaneneses were all there . . .  saw some of my friends that I had not seen in years and hung out at Cafe Lulu’s afterwards.  Was a very fun night never will forget it-   Merci Manu + Fahem

anyhow, this is off of the STEAK soundtrack, which is a french film made by mr. oizo.  apparently the movie is not very good–some high school thing about two misfits trying to join a highly elite social group.  but whatevs, this track is some deft vocal dance-pop jamboree, made hard by oizo and sexy by tellier.  enjoy~

oh yeah and I’ll go to a concert or something eventually, I’ve just been really busy that’s all, get off my back

Conhecem o Hey Champ? Eles são Saam Hagshenas, Jon Marks e Pete Dougherty, o trio de Chicago que abriu alguns shows do Sebastian Tellier. São uma banda de electropop com um álbum a ser lançado no segundo semestre deste ano e um ep já lançado – que dá nome ao título do post e originou um festivo primeiro single.
