“Quando o carro ficou do meu gosto e me senti capaz de dar o meu melhor, me diverti bastante.

Sebastien Bourdais won the Superleague opener at Monza and charged from the back of the reverse grid

Sebastien Bourdais won the Superleague opener at Monza and charged from the back of the reverse grid to take third in the next race, securing the €100,000 prize for the weekend’s top driver for the second time in two appearances.

The former F1 and Champ Car driver joined the football-themed series at the previous outing in Estoril, representing the Spanish club Sevilla and winning the ‘dash for the cash’ shoot-out between the top six cars.

Scheduling constraints at Monza meant there was no third ‘money’ race and the prizes were awarded based on who performed best across the two point-scoring races.

The Frenchman’s victory was all the more remarkable because he was driving for a scratch team, Reid Motorsports, formed in a week to run the Sevilla and Galatasaray cars after Ultimate Signature pulled out of Superleague. The squad is run by former Ultimate Formula 3 team-manager Anthony Reid using workshop space borrowed from Ray Mallock’s World Touring Car team.

Bourdais and Esteban Guerrieri of Greek club Olympiacos were comfortably the two dominant drivers of the weekend, qualifying on the front row for the first race and finishing 1-2 in it. This put them on the back row for the second race, but they fought through to take third and fourth.

Ahead of them in race two was Tottenham’s Craig Dolby, who followed up his fifth place in the first race with the runner-up spot in the second, despite starting 14th in the 18 car field.

The Melton Mowbray driver was the third-best scorer overall behind Bourdais and Guerrieri, allowing him to close the gap on championship leaders Liverpool with two races to go. But Reds’ driver Adrian Valles was fourth in the first race and fifth in the second, minimising the damage.

He leads Dolby by 49 points, with 100 up for grabs in the final races – although Superleague awards points down to last place, which means Valles is guaranteed 10 just by starting both races. Max Wissel of FC Basel, in third before the weekend, suffered a disappointing outing, with a ninth place and a mechanical retirement while running strongly, and was overtaken in the standings by Guerrieri.

Dolby went into the weekend with a single point advantage over Wissel, but the Swiss club saw its title hopes vanish after becoming one of the biggest victims of widespread mechanical problems with the series car and also getting caught up in shambolic pitlane scenes during race two.

The narrow and overcrowded Monza pitlane could not handle the sheer quantity of the bulky 750-horsepower, V-12 powered Superleague cars, with pitboxes so closely packed together that exiting drivers were forced into swerves, wheelspins and erratic manoeuvring to avoid rival crews as they worked on neighbouring cars.

Wissel attempted to pull away from his stop in the second race, only to find AC Milan’s Giorgio Pantano halted in the main pitlane, unable to get into his own pitbox. Wissel took evasive action and appeared to stall behind the GP2 champion’s car, prompting rival mechanics to run out to push him clear.

One sudden wheelspin later and he was on his way, leaving bodies tumbling across the pitlane into the path of other cars and prompting an episode of violent finger-pointing in the FC Basel garage as a rival crewman gave vent to his complaints.

Wissel’s race was already compromised, but it ended a few laps later as his car failed and he was forced to retire. An even unluckier victim of the unreliable series car was Corinthians’ Antonio Pizzonia, who was on course for a podium in each race when he twice lost power and slipped back down the field, finishing 10th and 9th.

Britain’s Jonathan Kennard also had cause to curse on his return to the series, subbing for Enrique Bernoldi in the Flamengo car. Mechanical problems prevented him from setting a lap in qualifying – Dolby norrowly escaped the same fate, managing only a single flying lap – and he fared little better in race one.

This at least gave him a front row start for the second race, but it ended almost immediately for him when Pantano came close to jumping the rolling start from the second row and went wheel-to-wheel with him into the first corner. They clashed and Kennard was sent spinning off.

Pantano, who had a miserable weekend, then proved to be a moving roadblock that allowed polesitter Pedro Petiz of Sporting Lisbon to build what would turn out to be a race-winning lead.

Rangers’ John Martin saw his weekend start badly, with a lack of running time in practice leading to a poor qualifying result. He went on to finish 11th and 12th in the two races and lies ninth in the standings.

Tottenham’s Dolby still holds out hope of the championship, although his task now is similar to that faced last year by Valles during his unsuccessful attempt to chase down Davide Rigon’s Beijing Guoan car.

He said: “The first few laps were unbelievable and very aggressive, as I knew I had to be. I needed to catch Max in the championship which meant finishing ahead. We caught up and passed before his problem so I did what I’d set out to do.

“After the issues in qualifying, I thought it would be difficult, but we never gave up. We came fifth in the first race with an engine problem which we fixed and came through from the back of the grid, passing all the people who had problems in the pit stops before they got there.

“I showed a few people that I am not going to back down and if my car is on the inside I will stay on the inside. A few people tried to push me on to the grass but I went wheel-to-wheel with them. For Jarama, the championship is still wide open so I will definitely be giving it large.”

The final races of the season will be held at Jarama in Spain on November 8th.

Eis a classificação desta corrida:

Eis a classificação desta corrida:

1st Race: Victory for Sebastien Bourdais and Sevilla FC Former Toro Rosso Formula 1 driver Sebastien

1st Race: Victory for Sebastien Bourdais and Sevilla FC

Former Toro Rosso Formula 1 driver Sebastien Bourdais claimed victory for Seville in the opening Superleague Formula race at Monza today.

The Frenchman demonstrated excellent timing at the rolling start and outbraked pole-man Esteban Guerrieri from the inside at the first chicane.

Guerrieri chased hard for second but the Olympiacos driver’s task was made difficult by Atletico Madrid’s Maria de Villota, who severely disrupted an entertaining battle. De Villota had been promoted to the lead on lap 13, through dint of being the last driver to make a mandatory pitstop.

While Bourdais passed the obstructive car with a bold move around the outside of the Parabolica, de Villota stubbornly refused to give way to Guerrieri and came close to putting the Argentine on the grass after cutting the first chicane in a questionable bid to stay ahead. Guerrieri lost 2.5 seconds to Bourdais in the incident, but chased hard to close within 0.3s at the chequered flag.

Seville’s triumph is a moral boost for the Frenchman’s Reid Motorsport crew, who were formed in just seven days after a restructuring at former entrant Ultimate Motorsport. The team, led by former Ultimate Formula 3 team-manager Anthony Reid, paid tribute to WTCC entrant Ray Mallock for the use of space in their workshop, formerly used for Mallock’s McLaren SLR preparation, at such short notice.

In an excellent debut for home club AS Roma, Formula 2 driver Julien Jousse claimed the final place on the podium. Jousse, replacing French compatriot Franck Perera, put in a fine drive to climb through the order from fifth on the grid.

Championship leader Adrian Valles took fourth to extend his points lead over nearest rival, Tottenham’s Craig Dolby. The high drag Panoz cars produced abundant overtaking; Valles rose from eighth on grid with Dolby following the Spaniard across the line having started ninth.

The result was an impressive recovery for Dolby, who suffered a gearbox valve actuator failure in qualifying which had restricted him to just one flying lap.

Anderlecht’s Yelmuur Buurman took sixth place, benefiting from suspected technical trouble for Antonio Pizzonia over the closing laps. The Brazilian Corinthians racer had set fastest lap on his way to a fleeting fifth, before losing four seconds of lap time as the race drew to a close.

Second row men Max Wissel and local hero Giorgio Pantano both plummeted down the order. In finishing a distant ninth, FC Basel’s Wissel sustained damage to his title hopes and lost ground to Dolby. Pantano was in freefall from the start and was further delayed by a lengthy pitstop.

Here are the results of this race:

2nd Race: Maiden victory of Pedro Petiz and Sporting CP

Sporting CP’s Pedro Petiz scored his maiden Superleague Formula success in the reverse grid race at Monza this afternoon.

The Portuguese had endured a troubled race one, culminating in ramming Porto’s Tristan Gommendy on the approach to the pitlane when the Frenchman engaged his pitlane speed limiter a little prematurely.

The 22-year-old tin-top convert, a winner of the Renault Megane Trophy in 2007, picked up the reverse grid pole for his woes and maintained the advantage to claim his first major open-wheel triumph.

In a manic race, Tottenham Hotspur’s Craig Dolby charged through the field to take second place from the seventh row of the grid, in the process edging closer to title rival Adrian Valles in the points race. Dolby was assisted by pitting on lap 10, one tour after a mass scrum which resulted in a log jam in the narrow pitlane.

Dolby’s drive was eclipsed by that of race one victor Sebastien Bourdais, who stormed from last on the grid to secure the final step of the podium. Bourdais has scored an impressive 90 points out of possible 100 over the weekend, but was quick to pay compliment to the efforts of rival Esteban Guerrieri, who finished fourth this afternoon for Olympiacos.

“I think Esteban was the quickest package this weekend, he ran us really close in race one,” said Bourdais. “We both started at the back [in race two], but unfortunately he had some incidents. When the FC Basel car of Wissel and [Antonio] Pizzonia had problems, things just opened up for me, which was quite nice.”

Liverpool’s Adrian Valles took fifth, just half a second ahead at the chequered flag of Anderlecht’s Dutch pilot Yelmur Buurman.

The first of several incidents occurred almost immediately when front row qualifier Jonathan Kennard and AC Milan’s Giorgio Pantano made contact away from the start at the first chicane. Kennard’s Flamengo car was tapped into a pirouette by the former GP2 champion, forcing the Englishman to rejoin in last position. The incident allowed Petiz a two-second break over the field at the conclusion of the opening lap, with Pantano acting as an unwitting rear gunner for the Sporting CP man by continuing to back up the field in second place.

Pantano would slip to an eventual 11th place, not helped by being in the thick of the pitlane chaos along with FC Basel’s Wissel. After another fighting drive, Pizzonia’s Corinthians machine was once again struck down with technical trouble in the latter stages of the race.

With one round of the championship, at Jarama, remaining, Liverpool’s Valles retains the points lead, 59 ahead of Dolby. Guerrieri’s strong weekend has helped to propel Olympiacos up to third.

Here are the results of this race:

Eis a classificação desta corrida:

1st Race: 1st victory of 2009 for Olympiacos, with Esteban Guerrieri

Esteban Guerrieri scored the first victory in Superleague Formula for Greek club Olympiacos at Estoril on Sunday morning, the Argentinian passing both Adrian Valles (Liverpool) and Antonio Pizzonia (Corinthians) to secure the win.

Guerrieri – who also won at Zolder driving for Al Ain – leapt into the lead from the outset, as poleman Pizzonia appeared to miss the lights at the rolling start and was rammed from behind by Valles. Guerrieri extended a 1.7s lead before his mandatory pitstop, but there his lead was negated as both Valles and Pizzonia moved ahead of him with faster stops.

But the 24-year-old, who has driven for three clubs this season, was not to be denied. After all the leaders struggled to pass late-stopping backmarker Maria de Villota, Guerrieri attacked the delayed Pizzonia around the outside at Turn 6 on lap 20. The Brazilian held him off there, but Guerrieri lunged again at the following corner and pulled off a brilliant pass.

Guerrieri then chased down leader Valles, and took full advantage when the Liverpool car slid onto the kerbs at Turn 2, the legacy of a late-race brake problem, allowing Guerreri to dive down the inside into Turn 3. He reeled off the remaining four laps to score a 2.1s victory.

“The race was excellent,” said Guerrieri. “The pitstop wasn’t great but the car was great. In the second stint I tried not to kill the tyres early on, and saved my push-to-pass for the late stages too. The others were really struggling for rear grip by then, but my car was nicely balanced.”

Pizzonia finished third, but was lucky not to be penalised after he left the pits with his rear jack still attached. Fortunately, it quickly fell off and there was no sanction.

Yelmer Buurman was fourth for Anderlecht, ahead of John Martin (Rangers) and Giorgio Pantano (AC Milan). Tottenham’s Craig Dolby could only manage eighth, but that moved him into second in the championship as FC Basel’s car refused to engage first gear and Max Wissel was a non-starter.

Of the newcomers, Alvaro Parente crashed out of 10th for Porto when he tripped over de Villota after she ran wide at Turn 2, firing him into the barriers as she rejoined into his path.

Ex-Formula 1 racer Sebastien Bourdais finished 11th for Sevilla on his series debut, losing time early on but setting some competitive lap times as the race wore on.

Franck Perera took seventh on his return for Roma.

2nd Race: Home victory for FC Porto and Alvaro Parente

Alvaro Parente followed up his GP2 success at Spa last weekend by winning the second Superleague Formula race on home turf for FC Porto at Estoril on Sunday.

Parente took the lead during the mandatory pitstop phase, as early leader Enrique Bernoldi (Flamengo) stayed out too late. Bernoldi gave away a lead of over 3 seconds by staying out three laps too late, as Parente was lapping over 1.5s quicker after his stop.

Parente held off a late charge from Formula 1 refugee Sebastien Bourdais (Sevilla), who closed a 5s deficit to 1s by the finish, but the four-time Champ Car title winner was never close enough to find a way past. Bourdais had passed Bernoldi with a textbook push-to-pass move into Turn 1 just after half distance.

The other potential race winner was Franck Perera (AS Roma), who charged up to fourth early on but suffered a disastrous pitstop when his engine stalled, putting him out of the reckoning.

Bernoldi held on to third despite huge pressure from Yelmer Buurman (Anderlecht), who charged past Antonio Pizzonia (Corinthians) and Giorgio Pantano (AC Milan) to finish fourth. This was all the more remarkable considering Buurman took a trip into the Turn 2 gravel on the opening lap and dropped to the back of the field.

Ho Pin Tung finished seventh, ahead of Rangers’ John Martin, who spun after clashing with Maria de Villota (Atletico Madrid). Max Wissel (FC Basel) crossed the line ninth, but pitted too early and received a 25s penalty, which promoted title rival Adrian Valles (Liverpool).

Liverpool now leads Tottenham by 58 points in the championship after Craig Dolby was forced out on the second lap.

3rd Race: 100.000 € and victory for Sebastien Bourdais (Sevilla FC)

Superleague Formula’s newest superstar driver Sebastien Bourdais took home the €100,000 on offer after winning the Super Final at Estoril on Sunday.

The Sevilla driver scooped the big money race after fellow ex-F1 racer Antonio Pizzonia (Corinthians) slid out of the lead on the opening lap.

Pizzonia led away from the standing start, squeezing fellow front-row man Yelmer Buurman of Anderlecht towards the pitwall. This allowed Adrian Valles (Liverpool) up to second, while Bourdais and opening race winner Esteban Guerrieri (Olympiacos) battled for third into Turn 1, with Bourdais just grabbing the place.

Valles hit the front at Turn 3 when leader Pizzonia locked up and slithered into the gravel, but two corners later Bourdais lunged past the series points leader, taking Guerrieri with him.

From there, Bourdais managed the gap to Guerrieri, crossing the finish line 1.2 seconds clear after the five-lap sprint.

Who would have thought, given the dominant way Sébastien Loeb lead the the first half of the 2009 WRC season, the Ford works team would be able to mount a serious challenge in the second half of the season? After day 1 of Rally Australia it’s Latvala leading ahead of of Citroen junior Ogier. Loeb is 23 seconds behind with team-mate Sordo and championship leader Hirvonen on his heels. Further motorsport action this Weekend:

Apart from day 2 of Rally Australia there’s racing action over in the US with NASCAR Camping World Truck Series battling it out at the Iowa Speedway. F3 Euroseries will be fielding their first race of the Weekend at Brands Hatch, at Oschersleben there’s races counting for ADAC PROCAR Touring Car Championship, the Formula 2 Serie and the potentially title deciding race of the International Formula Master plus a round of the SEAT Leon Eurocup.

Sunday at Oschersleben will see the same series performing their second race plus, of course, the WTCC lining up on the grid for their two races of the Weekend. There’s going to be plenty of motorbike action with MotoGP and the 250 and 125 classes racing at Misano and the World Superbike and Supersport championship visiting the Nürburgring.

The Focus of the day will be on Sébastien Bourdais polishing up the Superleague Formula event at Estoril, DTM and F3 Euroseries will line up at Brands Hatch, NASCAR’s Nationwide Series and later the Sprint Cup aces will do their thing at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. By then the results of day 3 of Rally Australia will already be published.

In my previous blog about the 3 new recruits of the season, I had signed off saying there was much action that we could expect considering a street circuit. But, it was just disappointment at its best with Valencia’s results.

Renault’s Romain Grosjean who replaced Piquet Jr. began with a damaged nose on the opening lap that called for an unscheduled stop. With a start like that, there definitely was pressure on the driver who ultimately ended on a half spin holding on to the 15th position. So is Renault regretting its decision? And is Alonso really getting that added attention after all?

Valencia’s street circuit proved costly for Toro Rosso’s Jaime Alguersuari as well. Alguersuari spun in Turn 12 on Lap 43 and never made it back on the track. Having put on a much better show at Hungary, this replacement for Sebastien Bourdais spelt disappointment as he clinched the 16th position.

The much talked about replacement, Luca Badoer was also probably the biggest disappointment on the streets of Valencia. Adding to his list of dubious records, has got to be that of the worst performance by a mid season recruit! Right from letting fellow recruit Romain Grosjean overtake him to getting a drive-through penalty, Badoer seems to have gone all out in doing everything wrong in his much debated return to Formula 1. With everything that went wrong, team Ferrari with Luca Badoer came in 17th!

Valencia’s street circuit brought out the worst in the recruits for Renault, Toro Rosso and Ferrari with each claiming the 15th, 16th and 17th positions respectively.

With such terrible performances on a street circuit like Valencia, I cannot help but imagine in utter sadistic amusement the turnout at a circuit like Singapore. Can you imagine . . . a night race, a street race and the worst mid season recruits ever!

(AP Photo/Manu Fernandez)

If you’re watching the automotive blogs today, then you’ve probably already heard the latest Formula One news. Actually, this is just the latest twist in a story that’s been building for about a month, or so. Keeping it brief, here’s what’s happened so far: Sebastien Bourdais, a 30-year-old driver for the Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso Formula One team was fired. He was replaced by 19-year-old Jamie Alguersuari, the youngest driver in Formula One history. As cruel as it sounds to say this, drivers get fired and hired all the time in motorsports, so usually a driver firing isn’t particularly newsworthy. But what’s grabbing headlines today is exactly how the Toro Rosso team went about firing Bourdais.

I won’t keep you in suspense any longer — Bourdais has said that Red Bull Racing owner Dietrich Mateschitz notified him that he was fired via text message. Can you believe that? I mean, here’s a guy who began his career at just 10 years old racing karts, he’s won championships in the French F3 series and in the International F3000 series, he was the CART Rookie of the Year in 2003, he won the Champ Car title four times in four consecutive years (2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007), he’s a seven-time competitor in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and he’s raced on the Toro Rosso F1 team for a season and a half.

Now, I fully understand that because Bourdais failed to produce a single win in his last 27 races, he had to be let go. However, and be completely honest with yourself when you answer this question, do you think that Sebastien Bourdais deserved more than just a text message to notify him that he’s been fired?

I think that’s pretty cold.

New rookie F1 driver Jaime Alguersuari has confirmed that he wil be in attendance at the World Karting Championships in September.

Alguersuari, who is just 19, will add this duty to his racing with Scuderia Toro Rosso and in World Series Renault.

He was recruited to the Toro’s after Sebastien Bourdais’ untimely and public exit from the team. Despite just straightline testing the 2009 car he made a solid debut at the Hungarian Grand Prix. He will be hoping for more in Valencia, a race staged in his own country.

Not content with 2 race drives and now the karting, he was seen DJ’ing in central Barcelona recently to many thousands who were partying in the streets.

“I will be competing in the KZI World Karting Championship in Sarno, Naples in September,” he told the official F1 website.

“I am only interested in learning and learning to compete against the best. Portimao (the latest World Series round) and Sarno mean the same to me – pitting myself against the best drivers right now.”

In these tough times, it’s good to know he will have many skills!

Bom dia amigos.

Although Felipe Massa’s condition is said to be “improving” there are underlying doubts that the Brazilian will compete in the European Grand Prix at Valencia in 4 weeks time. There are some doubts to when he will return, and if he will during the entireity of 2009. This has sparked a huge debate on who could race for Ferrari, and here I take a look at some of the possibilities Stefano Domenicali and Luca di Montezemolo could be assessing in the next few weeks. Get well soon Felipe!

Luca Badoer

Luca Badoer is Ferrari’s main test driver and has been with the team for sometime. The Italian also drove for Minardi, Scuderia Italia and Forti throughout the early 1990’s, and despite competing in many races he failed to score a point. His last appearance in a race 10 years ago with Minardi could mean he is out of form and fitness, but he has done plenty of testing especially with the KERS system.

Marc Gene

Marc Gene is Ferrari’s “other” test driver, and works a lot on straightline speed testing. He drove for Minardi in 1999 and 2000, before moving to test with Williams where he was a substitute driver for 3 races. He is also a factory team Le Mans driver for Peugeot meaning he is fit and healthy enough to haul an F1 car around for 2 hours. Scoring points on his substitution for Williams in 2003 is impressive, and he would be my choice of the two test drivers.

Michael Schumacher

The most successful F1 driver ever, and Ferrari’s darling looks like the obvious choice on paper. Indeed he has everything going for him, and keeping his hand in with occasional testing he should have no problems with the F2009. However his manager has cast doubts on his return, and Schuey has always denied wanting to drive again. Could he be the one to help them out of a rut? I’d like to think so, and so would Bernie Ecclestone who must be rubbing his hands with glee at the chance of getting Schu back in a car.

Fernando Alonso

A bit of an “off-the-wall” choice, but it does make some sense. Rumour says Alonso has signed a contract for 2010 with Ferrari, and with Renault being suspended from the next GP there is a slim chance Alonso could make his Ferrari debut some 8 months earlier than expected at another ‘home’ GP of Valencia. It would be quite interesting to see the Spaniard alongside Raikkonen.

Bruno Senna

No-one has really considered Senna’s impressive nephew Bruno, but he has no race seat and is a proven fast driver. He also drove at the Ferrari anniversary celebrations at Silverstone a few years back. He’s young, fast and this could be a perfect break for him.

Selected Others:

Sebastien Bourdais – About as likely as me to get the drive

Niki Lauda -I think he was joking

Takuma Sato – Probably more likely than Bourdais

The reigning world champion did not put a foot wrong as he moved up from fourth on the grid to first early on.

There was more trouble on the track, though, following Felipe Massa’s horrific crash yesterday.

A wheel nut left unsecured during a pit stop allowed Fernando Alonso’s front offside tyre to come adrift and bounce dangerously across the Hungaroring track. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. The Renault driver was forced to retire.

The victory was Hamilton’s tenth for McLaren from 45 starts and his first since October’s Chinese Grand Prix.

Behind the Briton, Kimi Raikkonen finished second, although the Ferrari driver could yet be stripped of that position following a first corner collision with Vettel that is to be investigated by the stewards.

Mark Webber, of Red Bull, finished third, closing the gap at the top of the championship standings to 18.5 points behind Button.

The Ferrari garage showed their support for Massa, who underwent surgery last night on his fractured skull following a freak accident during qualifying, by using a pit board bearing the words “Forza Felipe Siamo Con Te” which translates as: “Strength Felipe We Are With You”.

Remarkably, what followed on lap 13 following Alonso’s first pit stop was almost beyond comprehension.

Starting from his first pole since the Italian Grand Prix in 2007, and Renault’s first since China 2006, Alonso comfortably led the field away from the lights and for those initial 12 laps. But on exiting the pit lane it was clear the double world champion had an issue with his right front wheel.

Within seconds, and as he slipped backwards through the field, Alonso initially lost the wheel cover. More horrifyingly, and as he continued to tour around the track, the tyre eventually worked its way loose from the rim. It then bounced across the track and into a barrier before coming to rest along the side of the circuit.

A demissão do Sebasti

Jaime Alguersuari is on the verge of being confirmed as Sebastien Bourdais’s successor to the Toro Rosso race seat today, after straight line speed testing in Italy.

The 19 year old Spaniard will become the youngest F1 driver in history if he takes the wheel of the STR4 at the Hungaoring next weekend, trying to bring some good fortune and points to the Faenza based team.

He has hardly done any testing with the team, and close friend Ferrari tester and former Minardi driver Marc Gene says will mean he is going to have a hard debut.

“Jaime is ready, but there are lot of factors playing against him,” the 2009 Le Mans winner told Diario Sport.

“No testing, and Hungary is a tough track” he added

Alguersuari has another bonus for Toro Rosso, sponsorship. In a move which will remind older viewers of the Minardi days, he is backed by various Spanish companies including Repsol, who have sent around $2million to Italy trying t guarantee the seat for their man.

Fortunately for the 19 year old, he is a good driver too – unlike some of those who have in the past bought their seats…
