I discovered Second Life’s version of Cat Stevens (now Yusef Islam) in Guthries’ this morning.  Guthries’ is a place Nitram and I have gone to hear singers together before but a real gem was there today.  Keith Madsen has Cat’s voice and accent…perfect!  Hailing from Birmingham, UK Keith played songs by Cat Stevens, Alan Jackson, Dr Hook and some amazing originals.  It was so good to hear a British accent again, miss you so Nitram sweetness. Nitram was always interested in supporting UK artists in Second Life. I was very impressed by Keith’s voice and would strongly very very strongly recommend hearing him in concert.  Cat Stevens fans especially will be in heaven!

A friend in SL, Brianna and I caught Wombat Quinnell in concert this morning in Second Life’s Club Retro.  I got to make over Wombat’s mate Kollas who was just hours old.  He came to hear his RL friend sing.  Wombat has a delightful Aussie accent and played lots of requests,  very good voice and guitar playing. Wombat ended with a great cover of the Bread standard “IF”.   Well worth hearing him if you get a chance to!

He writes and arranges his own original songs, as well as arrangements of cover tunes. He has been playing guitar, bass, and drums and singing for over 30 years and has quite a bit of experience in many styles of music, but prefers music with funky backbeats and strong rhythmic grooves.  Toran is a gifted singer and his popularity is growing.

“Music has always been a big part of my life from the time I was very young.   I can thank my family for the influence they had on me; constantly playing all types of music of the 40’s to the 80’s.   From school concerts to here and now on “second life” I’ve always enjoyed singing.  As a teenager I had a band in which I sang and played the guitar.   In the Marine Corp., a  group of us got together to harmonize and sing A accapalo at different venues.   After the Corp,  I sang in a few small clubs and  restaurants,  always enjoying the music.    Of course, I needed to make ends meet and not wanting to live the life of a starving musician, I had to move on to another career, but always keeping music as one of the passions in my life.   I enjoy photography as well as music, so I created a photography studio on second life which you are all welcome to visit.”

If you are in the Music scene in Second Life and haven’t heard about Mankind Tracers proposition to the music industry for “pay for entry” Venue arrangements, then you don’t spend enough time here in Second Life…Some love the idea, some hate it and have had very passionate and some violent reactions to it. Mankind has held a few concerts now under his newly proposed system, and had time to process the feedback from the community both Musicians Agents and Venue owners. I’ll be asking Mankind some tough questions about his proposal, and catching up with the result in his experience, of this new system of asking audience members at music venues to pay a fee to stay and listen to his concerts. If audiences refuse to pay they can be under this new system be ejected from the venue. Mankind Tracer is considered to be the highest profile and most popular Musician in Second Life, he feels he is taking a huge risk to that popularity by implementing his new system. How is it going so far?

A friend of mine showed me a cool new gizmo today. It’s a one prim Youtube player for Second Life. The best part is its free right now. Can’t get a better deal than that. It is very easy to set up and use. Within minutes, I had figured out it’s functions and was watching old clips of Howlin’ Wolf and James Brown. It loads quick and the sound and picture are really good. It can be re-sized too. You can search Youtube right from the unit or drop a url in it. It shows your search results in a simple thumbnail layout on the screen and you just click the one you want to play. So simple and so cool.

Its called Rox Tube Release Candidate 1 – Free YouTube Player – 1 Prim Go grab one while you can. UPDATE: We may need to hold off on this one for a bit folks. The one I saw yesterday AM was a working version. This one for some reason or other does not work. I will try to get to the bottom of this.

I’m pretty involved in both!

I am sure many of you are as well. I love music I love good music and I love Second Life music, it gives me the chance to hear and meet musicians I many never have had the chance too otherwise. Not all musicians we hear on Second Life have big offline careers in the music business BUT I’ve had the opportunity to meet some that should !

One of those musicians Is Jazzman Correia, I got married yesterday and was fortunate and pleased to have him play my reception! If you have heard Jazzman you already know how excellent he is , if you have not heard him …..make it a point. Trust me on this.

Here’s a bit of bio on Jazzman :

On stage since the age of 8, music has been the one consistent thing in JazzMan’s life. And then at the age of 11 his singing was joined by what would become his favorite instrument -  the trumpet. From that point on music would weave its way through every part of Jazz’s life.  JM has won numerous awards from the age of 12, both on a local and national level and is rumored to be one of the most accomplished unsigned artists. With his roots deep in Gospel, JM’s style can be defined as a fusion of jazz and R&B. His original songs have touched thousands of lives both on the Gospel and secular side. Jazz is also a fan of quality  cover tunes which he does at many shows. With one of the smoothest voices and melodic trumpet lines you are sure to be entertained, uplifted, and touched by his music.

From exhibition organizer Callipygian Christensen…this is one of those moments where it’s completely appropriate to lament the impermanence of Second Life builds.  

The Refuge and Expansion has been installed in the Wales sims for 10 months – a long time in SL, but it feels like such a short time as I sit and say goodbye. Sunset falls on The Refuge and Expansion on Sunday May 31st. There will be a final benefit concert for Heifer International from 3 -6 PM SL time, featuring Colemarie Soleil, Joaquin Gustav and Kelvinblue Oh.

So…..I’ve been meaning to update here for a while in case anyone still suffers from wrist-o-mania, so what better time than now?

If you haven’t noticed (and you probably haven’t ), I slipped into quiet retirement after the 1st of this year. I played 3 post-surgery shows, one on Dec 6th, one on the 20th, and a 45 minute show on Jan 1st. By the end of that show my wrist was almost on fire , so I decided to space out the shows a little more, and every time I’d go to practice, I’d have less and less time before the pain returned. I ended up putting the guitar down for 2 months before I touched it again, and when I did, I lasted all of 10 minutes.

Work still caused a little pain, but nothing that I couldn’t deal with, and since I wasn’t playing anymore it wasn’t too bad….until about a month ago, when the pain slowly creeped back to constant. Then I stupidly picked up the guitar on May 6th, lasted 10 minutes, and was at my doctor’s office the next day.

Got my referral, went back to Dr. Hand on the 14th, and he was concerned enough to give me 2 cortisone shots, one at the surgery site and one under my thumb, as it looks like the DeQuervain’s Syndrome that we thought I didn’t have is starting to flare up. He also gave me a new wrist brace (I should really start a surplus store for left wrist braces…if anybody needs one, gimme a call), which resembles the cast I wore after the surgery, cept this one’s removable and allows a tad more motion.

12 days later, and the surgery site isn’t too bad….it still hurts, but I think that’s from underuse since it’s restricted most of the day, so when I take the brace off, it’s gonna be a little tired. The site under the thumb is getting worse every day tho, and I’m a little worried this time. I really don’t want surgery again, and I’m 95% sure that’s where I’m headed. The day before I saw him and got the shots, my wrist hurt almost as much as it did right before sugery. Now….the Dequervain’s spot…I think it might be worse than before surgery. I hate taking pain medication stronger than ibuprofen (weird for a pothead, I know…), I’ve done all the therapy exercises they can come up with…I still do them as routine stretching during the day (well, I did up until I saw Dr. Hand).

So I ask again…Does anyone have a spare left wrist?

Je profite de cette rubrique « Builder » pour rajouter la video de l’événement Burning Life dans Second Life (la version virtuelle du festival Burning Man)qui présente diffèrents « builders » de renom. Il est important de savoir que tout le monde peut construire et se révéler une ame d’artiste grace aux outils existants, tout dépend du talent et du temps consacrés.

Hamlet Au notes that the inworld musical duo known as Chouchou has announced that they feel that they need direct financial donations to justify staying inworld.  This is downright silly.

Let’s be honest with ourselves as artists (or in my case, quasi-artists who like to support the art-creating class): You get support if you actually DO something.  It’s even easier to get support if you are talented, which Chouchou is.

Problem is, Chouchou has been largely absent from inworld performing for the past 6 months or so.  I can’t recall the last time a group announcement promoted a show (but their group notice archive, I can only look back 2 weeks and only see a notice of a new song release).  Looking at Chouchou’s blog, I note that either they are not keeping their performance schedule up to date or have not performed inworld since July 6.  In fact, the only activity on their blog since July was the announcement of a new song right after Christmas.   Their MySpace activity is a little harder to gauge, but it appears that they may have uploaded a couple songs recently by comparing playcounts.  That, and their note of poverty…

I am a fan of Chouchou.  I have purchased their music online.  I have gone to their shows and tipped them generously.  I likely would continue to do so if they DID SOMETHING worth contributing to.  But even U2 has to put out new music and goes on tour to maintain relevance in the music and cultural worlds.

Also, this concept of extorting the inworld populace in exchange for the presence of Those Who Are So Much Better Than Thou is crap.  The only way to get anything close to welfare inworld (barring a sugar daddy, and I’ll acknowledge that some talented artisans have such arrangements) is to get a premium Second Life account from Linden Lab and get – what – L$300/week?  Otherwise, I’ll echo Hathead Rickenbacker, who commented on Hamlet’s blog:

Le traitement médiatique est injuste, il est préférable de parler des trains qui arrivent en retard que de ceux qui arrivent à l’heure. Donc dès qu’un « faits divers ou de société » peut être relaté nous voyons une foison de blogs, de re-dit blogs (pas de contenu mais des reprises et du liens sponsorisé partout), médias web se contenter du pire. Dès lors l’étiquette monde virtuel ou Second Life n’inspire pas grand monde quand les projets sont un peu plus conséquents et valent d’en parler. C’est le cas des Transmusicales de rennes qui sous l’impulsion d’acteurs motivés  ont offert la deuxième édition de cet évènement dans et avec Second Life comme support. La mix réalité (concert réel / concert virtuel) se pratique depuis quelques temps dans Second Life mais les gros organisateurs de concerts ou boites d’événementiel n’en ont pas encore pris la mesure. On dira Bravo à ceux qui ont porté le projet, ceux qui ont participé à sa réalisation et aussi aux organisateurs des transmusicales qui se foutent du buzz et donne le bon ton tout comme en 1992 avec un plateau techno (mal vue à l’époque mais ils avaient eu raison J).

Dans un autre genre, soulignons aussi l’installation réalisée par Orange dans le cadre du Grand Palais (tiens ça me rappelle Yves saint Laurent dans Second Life et à la FIAC l’année dernière). L’idée est vraiment intéressante :

« l’installation ‘Les Ames Volantes’, qui permet à tout utilisateur de Second Life de venir ‘exposer son avatar’ en direct sur les murs du Grand Palais. Ces visiteurs ‘virtuels’ connectés depuis les quatre coins de la planète inviteront le public, le temps d’une apparition, à s’interroger sur l’identité, la représentation et la notion de virtualité. »

Transmusicales Second Life

Suite à quelques échanges entre bloggers sur l’intervention au Web08 de Susan Wu, j’ai décidé de donner mon petit point de vue qui n’a pas beaucoup de valeur mais qui est le mien J.

Tout d’abord, concernant le Web08, ce type de conférence avec des speakers de hauts vols limités par des interventions de 10 minutes ou en débats ne m’apporte généralement pas grand chose. Cependant même s’il y a eu apparemment des loupés, l’organisation d’un tel rassemblement à Paris reste une réussite en terme d’audience et de notoriété. Donc si Loïc Lemeur en agace plus d’un, son dynamisme apporte quand même de bonnes choses à l’ensemble des acteurs numériques en mettant la France sur la map des grandes confs. En plus, j’ai un bon sentiment concernant l’attitude générale de Monsieur lemeur ayant travaillé en partenariat avec ce garçon sur le lancement d’un service de blog pour un éditeur. Par contre, la place occupée par les mondes virtuels lors de cette conférence me paraît assez légère. Suivant  l’actualité et les acteurs des mondes virtuels et autres réseaux sociaux, j’avais il y a un bout de temps proposé ici un lien vers une conférence dédiée et organisée à ce titre par Susan wu). Notre ami Susan est un VC (venture Capitalist), c’est à dire un investisseur et non un praticien ou quelqu’un travaillant pour une société générant déjà des revenus ou des transactions conséquentes via une plate-forme identifiée.

A sa décharge notre pauvre amie doit expliquer plusieurs concepts encore flous pour l’audience en 10 minutes. Le thème est  “Virtual Goods make REAL money” et la première question participative « combien d’entre vous commercialisent des services de contenus, combien d’entre vous commercialisent des biens virtuels » paraît un peu naïve et le résultat évident. Elle va donc en principe s’employer à expliquer l’intérêt de ce type de monétisation ou d’usage (slide : Why would people spend hard earned cash on “objects” that have no tangible substance ?).

En ce qui me concerne je ne partage pas son défilé de présentation car le but originel est de donner une image du marché des biens virtuels et de sa viabilité en terme de revenues. Or le speaker part très vite dans l’approximatif et le conceptuel. Face à des dirigeant ou décideurs et venant d’un VC, j’aurais préféré un slide sur le nombre d’utilisateurs de mondes virtuels, MMORPG (état du marché et évolution), une explication sommaire de mondes virtuels et applicatifs dérivés , la part des investissements consacrés aux sociétés du secteur, le montant globale des transactions générés par l’achat ou l’échange de biens virtuels et deux trois exemples de sociétés prouvant l’efficacité en terme de monétisation. En gros un slide impactant et accrocheur.

Exemple de chiffres 2007 de société prouvant l’efficacité en terme de monétisation:

Création de 206 Millions de virtual pets (Neopet)

Plus de 100 Millions de membres pour Habbo hotel dont 90 % de leurs 60 millions de revenues annuels proviennent de la vente de biens virtuels.

Tencent operateur Chinois génére plus de 100 millions de dollars au premier trimestre 2007 dont 65 % proviennent de ventes et de services de biens virtuels.

Nexon génére 195 millions de dollars de revenues sur la base de vente de biens virtuels.

Le poids des transactions inworld de Second Life ( 60 millions de ventes d’objets par mois) et ses marketplace (ex Xstreetsl, Onrez)

…

Hélas on part dans une explication du coté intangible de la chose qui peut être évoquée oralement en 5 secondes en première question participative.( cf : la montre par Bill Gurley).

L’application Superpoke de Slide est mis en exergue mais connaît on le nombre d’utilisateurs passant en mode payant ? Quelles sont les revenues ? sinon quelle différence pour l’auditeur avec un système d’envoi d’e-card de 1999 ?

J’aurais préféré un slide focus sur Habbo hotel entant que plate-forme dont l’actualité (instauration de monnaie virtuelle, principe de reprise et d’échange d’objets…) en ce domaine est riche et le modèle prouvé. Un autre sur les spécificités de développement de branding de marque ou d’individus via les objets crées dans Second Life qui est encore et toujours le plus vaste laboratoire in vivo en terme d’expériences diverses pouvant être étudiées sur ce point. (notion de freebie, mode de viralité, appartenance et réseaux (j’achete parce que je te connais ou t’apprécie), marketplace, personnes vivant de cette activité (ex : gagner sa vie en étant jardinier dans second life : Lillith Heart ), goodies de marques, notion de droits de proprietés et cession de droits, pricing, objet identitaire et revendicatif (associations)…)

Un slide sur l’interconnectivités des reseaux et mondes virtuels (vendre sur plusieurs plate-forme)

Un arrêt sur image par exemple sur une société commercialisant les droits de personnalités ou la notion de vente d’art virtuel et donc l’évolution en cours (Virtual Great)

Et finalement un lien vers 5 heures de conférences en ligne sur le sujet avec des case study.

Au sujet de la petite polémique « apologie du goldfarming » :

La jeune Marjorie fait comme son mentor, une accroche dans le titre qui amènera de la réactions et de la popularité et ça marche cependant je reste sur le fait que la présentation un peu bancale de Susan wu est l’essentiel du problème et que les allusions au goldfarming est un exemple de la confusion et du manque d’efficacité de sa présentation. Après, cette notion d’industrialisation à bas coût a toute sa place au cours d’une intervention plus longue car divers exemples existent et vont perdurer de façon inéluctable.

5 heures de conférences en ligne sur le sujet avec des case study

Red Bull va devenir le premier partenaire en terme de sponsoring pour Sony Home. Je me rappelle avoir contacté la société concernant Second Life et facebook. Il y a encore quelques mois, le positionnement sur les réseaux et mondes virtuels ne faisaient pas encore partie de la stratégie numérique de Red bull. Sachant que les utilisateurs-consommateurs auto-alimentent naturellement la marque ( groupes, pages fan, objets virtuels dans second life), la boisson énergisante pouvait se faire attendre. Pourtant à l’opposé de nombreuses installations dans Second Life, cette marque me paraissait en pertinence avec ses cibles, ses activités (F1, musique). Une île Red Bull alimentée par des événements voir des liens événementiels réels aurait facilement trouvée son public. Cependant la masse de travail que cela représente est peut être trop importante et pas assez traçable donc un partenariat avec Sony paraît plus intéressant sur le papier car la marque s’offre son opération de RP « 1^er annonceur sur Sony home » (cf. le premier sur Second Life, Google lively…) et une visibilité consacrée dans la communauté des possesseurs de Playstation. Peut être que Red Bull amorcera en parallèle une stratégie sur d’autres univers ou niches sociales.

Well, it’s been a while since I’ve (truly) updated here,  but to make a long story short, t’was a long, slightly bumpy road to recovery.  I’m not quite there yet, I do have a little random tightness in my wrist still, but range of motion is pretty much 100%, pain is all but gone, swelling is down, and Doctor has pronounced me “owie-free”.  Soooo……

Howzabout this Saturday, say around 2 PM SLT (Pacific Standard Time), you and as many people you can gather log into Second Life, head on over to Crystal Sands, and join me in welcoming….well….me back to the Second Life Music Scene?  Many months ago I promised Sandi that if and when I did come back, they would get the first show, and since I’m back, they do!

Thanks everyone for your continued support and friendship…I couldn’t have gotten through this without the goal of coming back and playing for y’all again.

That’s right, Komuso is going to offer up his blues brilliance inworld at Second Arts this coming Sunday!  If you’ve seen the Aussie sensei play live from Tokyo, you know what a treat it is.  If you haven’t shaken your pixel thing to the rhythms provided by Beato-san and Basso-san, you owe it to yourself to check out what all the fuss is about.  (Warning: Komuso shows are VERY popular.  Show up early to make it into the sim, and be ready for a little lag.)
