Up for grabs here is a very tasty Ibanez JS100. You find this guitar in the lovely Transparent Red finish. It’s in good shape – plays really well and sounds lush! You’ve got the fantastic Edge III tremolo system for all of those dive-bombs and artificial harmonic squeals, and also Joe’s name inlaid into the fretboard at the 21st fret.

Mr. Satriani is well known for his fantastic tone, and also the versatility of the instrument he’s designed that we’re discussing now. A core part of the flexibility of this instrument is in the ‘push-pull’ tone control. This opens you up to a range of single coil type sounds not unlike the configuration on a telecaster. That’s right, not only can you get searing lead lines, but glorious twang too!

In my view this guitar is an excellent buy, and great value for money – you’ll get a lot of mileage out this guitar! £399 is the price…let us know where we need to send it!

For almost 17 years of my life, I came in first. I had almost everything and I was happy. I didn’t know what it was like to lose and I took first place for granted.

My earth shook when I began coming in second. I was never early. That had always been my so called downfall. Why so called? Because no one gets up quicker than I did even by myself. I hardly realised I fell most times. But when it hit me that I fell, I will be down in total darkness and I will continue staying down until I decided to pick myself up. I am often at this dark place. There’s nothing but a glimmer of light. I guess it’s nature’s way of saying ’sorry for the inconvenience caused’. I used to hate the place, the thought of it, the cause of it. For moments, second was the most horrible place to be.

Until I opened up and broadened my horizon.

From a nightmare, coming in second turned into a dream.

The darkness with glimmer of light became a surrounding of solace. I didn’t mind remaining second. As I will always be in my place. Dropping from first to second wasn’t so bad after all. I adapted to it. I treasured it. I was completely me. It was like another home, where I belonged. For once, there was this place where nothing was ever expected out of me. I was content with the choices life had given. Yes, wrong choices were made but how else will I know what’s behind door number 2 if I didn’t open it?

Like I said, I am never early. When I find things, when I realised things, I am always late or sometimes too late. The phrase ‘better late than never’ barely existed. So sometimes when I opened a door, there’s nothing or no one there. What’s worse is when you find things that aren’t yours or when you find things that someone else had lost. From the day you found it, you already knew it won’t stick. You spent so much time preparing to let it go rather than embracing it while it last. Every now and then a repetitive mistake will be made. Those preparing to let go will always be in mourning and those embracing it will spent their life remembering. Either way, you win just so you can lose.

Being second is exactly like that. You are always giving in to the first and making way for the third. When you’re second you’re in between things or even coming in between things. When you’re second, you stood exactly in the middle of risks and sacrifices, you’re in the middle of right and wrong. It will make you feel out of place for sure, for quite some time. Time and again you’re going to need to get directions. While it wasn’t easy to stay first, it’s a different game altogether being second.

Second is practically a path on it’s own. I’m a rebellious second. I barely follow the lead, barely in the race, hardly looking back or always looking back depending on how paranoid I am capable of being. It was a little of a co-incidence when I opened a fortune cookie which could never be more right for me. It says my great attention to detail will be both a blessing and a curse. That is the exact definition of second.

I do miss being first though. But I am grateful for the lessons second is giving. Then again, if life is a test, I want a cheat sheet.

XOXO

There were tons of twists that I would’ve never dreamed would happen, but they all made the book that much greater! I’m still pushing for her love for Peeta and I really think they need to be together in the end, we don’t really know much at all about Katniss’ best friend, his name is at a loss to me right now…so I REALLY hope she doesn’t end up with him again. The love the books overall meaning of society and how so many of us view others as lesser beings…so sad…

“The first half drags, but overall not bad” 2009-11-19
By Steph (Tampa, Florida)
The things about “Chasing Fire” that I have to keep reminding myself is that it’s not written for adults. The idea and general plot structure is stellar and highly entertaining, but the execution often falls flat in places–mainly because I feel the book knows it is geared for teenagers and thus doesn’t have to try. I would love to see this book give its readers a little credit (ala, that teens can handle more complex writing and ideas), because there are times where things are so rushed. The entire first third of the book drags until we get to the Victory Tour (which I was looking forward to reading about) but the next thing I know, we’re zooming through the entire thing over the course of a couple of pages. I would have loved to read about Peeta’s fake proposal in front of the Capitol in detail–given that the love triangle plot point is something that seems to be anchoring the story–but instead I’m given a few lines telling me it happened. It isn’t until we’re told about the rules of the Quarterly Quell that the book takes on a shadow of “The Hunger Games”.

Speaking of the love triangle, it too falls a bit flat–if only because I cannot see why I should be rooting for Gale in it. He’s not given enough background for the reader to really understand Katniss’s feelings for him. In fact, his character is more of Katniss telling us about him rather than what Gale is showing us. I suppose that I’m supposed to take her word for it, but when you’ve got Saint Peeta running around (who is a little too pure and perfect for my tastes, but I’ll let that slide because in general I think he’s alright) showing you everything he’s got, it’s hard to wonder why a triangle exists.

Overall, the book was okay. I enjoyed the introduction of characters like Finnick and Joanna, and I enjoyed a chance to go back into the arena with Katniss. What it comes down to is that I read “The Hunger Games” in a matter of hours, but this one I took my time with because it just didn’t grab me like “THG” did. I still contest that if this book gave its readers some credit–if it pushed the envelope a bit more and really explored some of the emotions running through Katniss’s head and really delved into the political disarray, instead of just breezing over them with general summaries–it would be completely fantastic.

“Include me on the fan list” 2009-11-19
By Heidi Anne Heiner (SurLaLune Fairy Tales.com)
What is there to say that hasn’t already been said? I won’t waste space on a plot summary but just give my reactions to the book. There is always the threat of being disappointed after reading a much-hyped book, especially one that is a sequel to a bestselling book. I think this one avoids the sophomore slump, especially since I enjoyed it much more on its own–forgetting that it is a sequel–than many other books I’ve read this year. Comparing it to its predecesor, The Hunger Games, may be a disservice since the universe and its surprises were first revealed there, but this one continues the exciting fun and won’t disappoint 99% of its fans. I know I’ll preorder the third book without a second thought and expect to be thoroughly entertained yet again. Collins does something different and twisty from the other popular books right now and comes across as refreshing as a result. Highly recommended.

So… the girl from the blind date read my last blog (I gave it to my friend and she passed it along). Only problem is that it made her feel kind of bad and me look like I was desperately impatient. And now that I re-read it from her perspective, I feel bad! Cause I can totally see her point.

Sure, I started off with the “Oh me! Oh my! How lame, oh lame, am I?” crap, but at the end it could easily be interpreted like I was putting it all on her by saying she now had my contact info but hadn’t contacted me! Like that’s fair! I’m the lame one that didn’t talk to her on our date! And, of course, that wasn’t what I meant (famous last words)! The part about her not contacting me yet was there for dramatic affect. Anyone that knows me knows I do that!

Oh, but wait, she doesn’t know me! I didn’t talk to her! How could she know that?

You know, sometimes, I can be really stupid!

But, there is a silver lining! We do still have the second date planned. It looks like it will be sooner then I originally thought (YAY!). And, best of all, she’s still looking forward to it! (thus the title of this post)

So, blind date girl (no I’m not giving you guys her name), if you happen to read this, please understand that while I may be an idiot at times, I’m usually a well-intentioned idiot. And, that I’m sorry for not talking to you in the first place. I promise, I totally plan on talking to you on our next date! In fact, I stopped on my way home tonight and bought some Miracle Grow (I checked, it says it works on nuts) just to make sure!

Still single… but hoping!

Scott

Oh, and just to clarify, this is not desperately impatient. This is anxious and excited.

OK… I really have to shut-up now!

Attention astronauts: If you see a huge beam of light coming from somewhere near Donny Osmond’s house in Utah, be not afraid. “I’m probably putting it on top of my house with a spotlight on it for all the world to see,” Donny told us tonight of his shiny new disco ball trophy. We hung out backstage after tonight’s live season finale of Dancing with the Stars, where Donny was crowned the winner and was downright giddy. “I’m so happy. I’m so happy. I’m so happy right now!” he sang out. “I’m on cloud nine!” And he wasn’t the only one beaming… As we interviewed Donny and his partner Kym Johnson, Kelly Osborne proved she’s an all-for-one-and-one-for-all kinda gal by jumping right in to smooch them and squeel: “I’m so happy for you, I’m so happy for you!” (And you know what? We believe her.) So why was it a different tune for runner-up Mya? And why were the judges so surprised by Donny’s win? “We didn’t know who was going to win right up until the moment that they announced it was Donny!” Carrie Ann Inaba revealed to us after the show. “I think we had Mya and Donny matched, but it was emotional, exciting. It was surprising. It was good.” Meanwhile, Mya, who has been a frontrunner all season long, was feeling some conflicting emotions. “There’s so much. There’s disappointment, dedication, passion and commitment…I’ve learned multiple amount of things. It’s an experience that you’ll never forget for the rest of your life and that you want to share with others.” Kelly O. said she has no regrets. “[Before the show], I was the definition of being sick and tired of being sick and tired, and I needed a change. I threw myself in and what I got out of this is priceless.” As the studio cleared out and the contestants were escorted back to their dressing rooms, Donny the Champ still looked shaken as he clutched his disco ball trophy. “I’m numb. I can’t believe I’m holding this right now!” Time to go buy that spotlight.

Here are some tips you can use to buy second hand cars. Collected over the years from my experience

Here are some tips you can use to buy second hand cars. Collected over the years from my experience of buying second hand cars for me and my buddies which include cars like: M800, Zen, Santro, Wagon R, Indica, Esteem, Accent, Swift, Scorpio, Optra, Corolla

1. Check the manufacturing date of all the tyres. If they are near the model of the year of manufacture of your vehicle (ex. the car model is 2001 and the tyres are also 2001) then the odometer is correct. However if the tyres are like say 2005 and it has considerable wear….it means the car is driven a lot.

2. Demand to see the service history or service record. If the car has been properly serviced (and i am sure you wish it was), the invoice’s will have the odo readings. Demand to see the bill of last service done. Or just get the emission certificate.

3. If the odometer has been tampered, usually the numbers don’t align correctly.

4. Look for dust or any other foreign particle on the numbers odo inside the glass pane.

5. All the tyres manufacture date should be same.

6. In specific case of Corolla see if the gear knob leather cover has been worn out. Also look out if the seat cover’s stitch lining is coming out from anywhere.

7. Try to get the info of the original seller and try to meet him.

8. Check the insurance if he has any NCB (no claim bonus)

9. The front bonnet panel usually has lines on it. If the car has been accidented from front, however you try to correct, this this line would not be perfect. try to catch this when you buy a car. The same goes for the straight body line on the side and rear also.

10. Before buying a car, try to test drive the same vehicle (should be in a good condition) from somewhere else. Better ask a friend to let you drive his set of wheels. Other option would be to head to the showroom and take a test drive there. The idea is to get the hang of a couple of things like: how is the engine sound in various gears, how does a maintained car handles around bends and how does it handle in traffic, you get to know the extra rattles, check the pickup, check the interior. Then compare these to the vehicle you have zeroed in on.

11. Try to see the car in noon time under direct sunlight. Verify that the car has a uniform shade of paint all over. If you see a difference in shade ask if the car has been repainted and why.

12. Open the bonnet and see the bottom of the hood you just lifted. There should be no spray paint job done there. Check if the paint is uniform.

13. Check for rust under hood, in and around engine housing. Check the condition of the screws used to tighten the battery in place. Also check for the misalignment of the screws where the suspension is attached. This would generally be at the two extremes once you pop open the hood.

14. Check for a white powder like substance near all the gaskets. Especially check this near the front and rear windshields and also on the inside of door glasses. Pull the gaskets on doors and see for any unusual marks.

15. Inspect the boot. Check for the condition of the spare tyre and the compartment. This may give a fair idea on how much the car has been used.

Hope this helps in your making a better decision when you are looking for a used set of wheels.

This peak can be accessed from shishila or from bhirapura. The 9 km trek from shishla takes about 5 to 6 hrs for an average trekker. The distance from bhirapura is much shorter and can be done in an hour or two

I had first been to ettinabhuja in june just on the onset of monsoon along with my friends shasi , prahalad and prashant. With incessent rains and mist throughout the trek , we were unable to see the peak until the very end.

First Look at ettinabhuja during monsoon

When my friend Ina told me she and a few others were going to ettinabhuja in nov I wasnt able to confirm my participation as I was scheduled to fly to malaysia in nov. However things didnt materialize n my visit got postponed. Luckily for me 2 of the people who had to go had dropped out. When I was asked if I was interested in joining for the trek I immediately agreed as one ticket was left and another ticket was cancelled

With the place set 9 ppl met at majestic bus stand on 21st nov at 9.30 and boarded the bus to dharmastala. The team for the trek (Ina , Girish, Dhimoy, Sandeep, Amit, Chirag, Vishak ,Rutuja and yours truely )

After a peaceful overnight journey we reached dharmastala at 7 in the morning. The weather was however looking omnious as dark clouds were hovering over our heads ready to open up at any instant

Early morning in dharmastala

The bus to shishla was ready which we immediately boarded. As we proceeded to shishla we kept an eye out on the weather which began to clear which gave us some relief.

Chengappa our guide was waiting for us at shishila bus stand. After embarking from the bus we proceeded to gohkale’s house which would be our base camp. We were told that it was raining for the past 2 days and we could expect rain even on sat. We had decided if it would rain then we would be doing some other peak instead of ettinabuja. Keeping this flexibility in mind we proceeded further

After finishing our morning abulations and having a heavy breakfast we embraked on the quest to conquer ettinabhuja with the sky clearing up.

Guys getting ready for the trek

Sandeep all set and ready for trek

After checking our belongings , we started towards the peak with hope that it would rain

Ettinabhuja as seen from afar

We followed chengappa as he led the way. The initial walk was on the banks of river kapila which we had to cross. The river was in full flow when we had visited in june, however now the current was much less and we could cross it easily

River Kapila

We began our foray into the forest and soon we met our companions for the trek leeches which would accompany us till the top. After a short walk on the flat land , the climb began.

We began climbing at a steady pace and after a while we took a small break. The climb got steeper and taking frequent breaks we moved ahead. After a couple of hours of walking we reached the first grassland from where we could see the peak more clearly. Though the peak looked quite close, there was still lot of distance to cover, luckily for us the sun was still shining and we were able to cover good ground

Peak seen from grassland

Proceeding further we reached the second grassland , with grass as tall as us , dhimoy and myself cimbed a rock and we could see dark clouds had gathered and it was looking ominous. By this time the others had also reached the grassland and we moved forward.

Lunch was taken and after a short rest we began the final ascent. We reached the final grassland from where the we could see the peak standing in front of us majestically .

This was the place where I saw the peak for the first time when we went in june

After a short photosession we proceeded further. Since we cannot climb the peak directly we have to circle the peak to reach the top. By the time we reached the peak it was 4.45 in the evening.

Gang at top of ettinabhuja

Chengappa was of the opinion that we should climb the peak tomorrow as it could rain anytime and we had to get to the bhirapura temple situated a couple of kms below. As we were resting , chengappa met a local and got the permission to stay in the temple

We left ettinabhuja at 5.30 promising to return the next day and headed to bhirapura temple. As we left the peak we saw the weather had changed dramtically with grey clouds gathering from no where.

Bhirapura temple beckoned us at 5.45, which would be our halting place for the night.

The place was already covered in mist we could hear thunder at a distance accompanied by lightning

Bhirapura Temple covered in mist

A misty evening

Campfire was up and after a hot cuppa we were relaxing when we could feel the raindrops and within no time the rain began to fall.

The rain continued for some more time and later after stopping we began the campfire again and got the RTE’s out. Dinner was soon finished and it time to hit the couch.

10 ppl sleeping along with heavy rucksacks was a tight affair we maanged to make ourseleves comfortable. However the place being too small a few of the guys went to sleep outside by the fire praying it would rain again in the night.

After spending the night in the temple we got up early morning to find the mist still present. As we were getting ready to ascend the peak the sun began to come out of the clouds. The weather cleared up and we began to ascend the peak. With clear weather the peak looked amazing and we began to walk faster to reach the peak

We reached the peak from where we could see the hump.

The Ox’s Shoulder

Clicking some snaps we proceeded for the final phase of ascending the steep stretch to reach the top. The lush green mountains on the either side was a treat for our eyes and with the our cameras clicking we proceeded

After spending some time on top we bid adeiu to ettinabhuja n began our descent to shishla via the same way. While going down the group was split into 3 with dhimoy, sandeep and rutuja leading the way , me , amit, chirag and vishak in the middle and ina, girish and chengappa bringing the rear

Decent was fast with the sun beating down. As I was in the middle we were proceeding a bit slowly, and some how we lost our way . We managed to stumble upon a turtle which was equally lost .

Lost Turtle

We found the trail after searching for a few min and we soon reached the river. After reaching the pickup point me, chirag, amit and viskah called the jeep and rested for a while. The others joined us and we headed back to gohkale’s house.

After a belly filling lunch and seista we headed to shishileshwara temple to spend some time there. Later we boarded the jeep back to dharmastala.

Munching on ice creams and dosas we whiled away the time before heading back to bangalore

"Most Americans do not know slavery not only exists in the world today, it flourishes," said Ron Soodalter, co-author of The Slave Next Door, in his presentation in the Pegasus Ballroom Monday morning.

"Somewhere around 27 million people are in bondage in the world today. Now, that’s over twice the number as were trafficked in chains in the entire 350 years of the African slave trade."

Soodalter, an active abolitionist and historian, kicked off International Education Week at UCF as the keynote speaker for the Second Annual International Breakfast. The Slave Next Door presentation concluded the three-part series on "Slavery’s Resurgence" facilitated by the Office of the Special Assistant to the President for Global Perspectives and the International Services Center.

The series began with Somaly Mam, a Cambodian human rights activist, former slave and author of The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine, when she shared her experiences in September.

In October, Micheline Slattery, a human-rights activist and former restavek, or domestic child slave, in both Haiti and the United States, addressed about 300 attendees.

Modern-day slavery includes around 800,000 men, women and children trafficked each year around the world. According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Web site, about 17,500 of them end up in the United States, with a high percentage received in Florida.

Soodalter suggests a simple Google search on human trafficking for astounding results.

In spite of major federal legislation and anti-trafficking laws passed in 43 states, 103 human-trafficking convictions have resulted, Soodalter said.

Trafficking remains hidden, is largely unreported and difficult to identify. According to the 2009 Trafficking in Persons, or TIP, report, published by the U.S. Department of State, forced labor/involuntary servitude represents the majority of human-trafficking cases in the world. The co-author of Soodalter’s book, Kevin Bales, wrote the original 156-page TIP report, titled “Trafficking Persons in the United States — A Report to the National Institute of Justice.”

“The whole thing is disserving and extending,” said retired UCF foreign language professor David Gurney. “It contributes to the antagonism from people in underdeveloped countries to Western civilizations or Western countries.”

In the 1850s, purchasing a slave ran roughly $1,200, the equivalent of around $40,000 in today’s money. The reality is purchasing a slave today costs as little as $100, which makes them affordable and disposable, Soodalter said.

A trafficking victim lives in fear of violence or the threat of violence daily, he said.

Shawn Cox, victim witness coordinator and licensed clinical social worker with the United States Attorney’s Office, advocates that trafficking is a crime of absolute power over someone. According to the report Cox co-authored, “Victims of Human Trafficking and Trauma,” the psychological consequences of a victim are similar to the consequences of severe or chronic child abuse or experiencing acts of terrorism.

"In case you thought slavery doesn’t touch you, guess again," Soodalter said. "Chances are, the clothes you wear, the food you eat, has been touched by slavery."

The good news is there have been some inroads made recently in the area of agricultural servitude, Soodalter said. When Taco Bell refused to stop buying produce picked by enslaved workers in an effort known as the "Ban the Bell" campaign, it set a precedent that several other companies, including McDonalds, A&W, Long John Silver’s, Pizza Hut, Whole Foods, Chipotle and Burger King, have followed, Soodalter said.

"The message is clear," Soodalter said. "Slavery and worker abuse will not be tolerated. Not here, not now, not ever."

Mark Freeman, public affairs coordinator for the Global Perspectives Office, said they are hoping to continue the series next spring since response has been incredible. Because of the series last spring, students on campus were so spurred into action they formed the unofficial student group “Students Against Slavery @ UCF,” Freeman said. “Students Against Slavery @ UCF” has a Facebook page, and Harry Coverston serves as the faculty advisor for the group.

"Spreading the word is the most important thing," said Frank Hegedus, a senior political science and international relations major. "There is only right now."

Esquire’s second annual edition of The Big Black Book: The Style Manual for Successful Men sho

Esquire’s second annual edition of The Big Black Book: The Style Manual for Successful Men should come with a warning label: Devout Marxists, or even emotional neoliberals, should not read this, for it has been known to cause high blood pressure and, in some instances, serious heart attacks.

Then again, perhaps the welfare of leftists is not utmost in the minds of those who, in the words of editor in chief David Granger, seek to help define “that fine line between pursuing quality and indulging in extravagance.” For, as you’ll no doubt be shocked to discover, quality, as defined in this context, is extravagant, and, in matters such as purchasing time on private jets or arranging for custom shoe manufacture with exotic animal skins, the material here is to politically correct as Dick Cheney is to Al Gore, or as he is now known, Saint Albert.

Yet, in that same note from Granger, there are clues that the sharp minds at Esquire are well aware that many readers will be more of the Syms educated consumer variety than the Gordon Gekko variety. Leave aside that the paperback version of the Big Black Book is red (“Yes, We Know It’s Red,” the cover notes, pre-empting wisenheimers everywhere). “For the most part,” Granger writes, “we grew up in homes where someone worked hard to provide a living, and most of us had either parents or grandparents who believed in one of the defining character traits of the last century: thrift.” Could secret Hearst marketing studies locked in an undisclosed location indicate that at least a sizable portion of the Big Black Book’s readership remains in such homes? That there are schmos like me peering through the glass at the kind of folks who will spend their next spare $2,450 on a deerskin bag rather than dividing it between their kids’ 529 college funds but who will, at the end of the day, be slipping that check to CollegeBoundFund in their declasse cuckoo-style mail boxes? I suspect they do know that.

And it is rationalizing thusly that I leaned back and thoroughly enjoyed this stylish, clever, well-researched, and sumptuous catalogue of dearly-obtainable objects.

The good-life gurus ease us in slowly with the at least faintly plausible Hogan leather bomber jacket ($1,590) and the $1,295 Gucci wing-tip shoes. Those are both among “The Essentials.” And here I thought the essentials were my $45 loafers from DSW and my 15-year-old Members Only jacket that my wife is (I’m on to you, honey) secretly planning to give to a shelter next time I leave town (she calls it my “Walter Matthau jacket”). The $998 Moncler down jacket looks mighty cozy, except for that pesky global warming thing that had our a/c buzzing well into October.

A $615 Meisterstuck 149 gold-plated black resin fountain pen from Mont Blanc ($615)? Unlikely, though fountain pens are the kind of pretension I’m susceptible to, but duly noted ware for either the starchy villain or eccentric hero of my next (i.e., first) mystery novel. (“Unfazed, Herr Strechen uncapped his Meisterstuck and glibly fingered its golden nib. It was then, with a cold shiver, that Samantha realized her fate was sealed.”) Should Herr Strechen wear a wool “killer suit” from Kilgour ($1,790)? Perhaps a silk Gucci pocket square ($110)?

Much of the pleasure of reading The Big Black Book is derived from being reminded that not everyone works in IT. That is, there are still people like designer Taavo Somer and tailor Martin Greenfield who make vintage suits from dead-stock wool circa 40s and 50s. Or Marcus Wainwright and Nathan Bogle, English transplants to New York who make jeans from denim produced on antique shuttle looms. Or the 83-year-old Belstaff, of England, reproducing the waxed-cotton motorcycle jacket favored by Steve McQueen. “Rumor has it that” he once “passed up a night with his then-girlfriend, Ali MacGraw” the book informs us, “to stay in and wax his Belstaff. This was not a euphemism.”

I enjoyed reading the history of the little suit and the pictorial time line tracing its lineage from Harold Lloyd, through Benjamin Braddock, Mick Jagger, Elvis Costello, and Pee-wee Herman.

I’m not the type of guy who could, with a straight face, wear the handsome stallion-profile ring by David Yurman, but it’s something to aspire to, I realize looking at the characteristically splendid photo from Lendon Flanagan. That’s in a section called “The Little Things,” which also ties vintage to voltage with luxuriously arrayed collections grouping, for instance, a $125 Yves Saint Laurent leather bracelet with a Motorazr V3i phone from Motorola ($290). I was enjoying the fantasy until I got to the $3,200 Ralph Lauren Purple Label alligator-leather mouse pad. Note to HR: Any partner using one of these is clearly embezzling.

“The Long Road” features a fun little essay on the how and where of cashmere production. “The Leather” is an understatedly fetishistic romp through shoes, gloves, and wallets made from a range of hides, from the customary calf, to the eyebrow-raising goat, Russian reindeer, ostrich, and peccary (a cousin of the wild boar), to the hair-raising lizard, stingray, python, and crocodile.

Items get heavier mid-book. The Land Rover Defender 110 (from $39,365) looks far more useful and considerably less objectionable than the Hummer you might see strutting down Deer Park Ave. in North Babylon, Long Island, as long as you leave off the purple underlights. And the Ford Focus ST ($36,247) looks downright sensible. Is it in the wrong publication? Ah, there’s the catch–you can only get it in Europe, so there’s that little add-on. The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione ($184,289) is truly drool-inducing, and I say that as a fella not unduly taken with automobiles. I think I’ll have Herr Strechen’s embittered wife–Gerthe, I’ll call her–drive one to Dresden. (“As she revved its 4.7-liter V-8 she experienced a sweet sixth-speed torque that gave her all the pleasures unavailable from her domineering orchid-obsessed spouse.”)

The eco-resort in the Maldives looks way too laid back for the Stechens ($540 a night off-peak), but let’s have them fly–shall we?–on an eight-passenger Dassault Falcon 2000 ($25 million).

I’m taken with the Grande Chronomaster Open XXT watch by Zenith ($21,500), but fear it won’t cope as well with sweat and sunscreen on my jogs as my Timex sports watch ($35, Sports Authority).

“The Bespoke Life” clues us off-the-wrack guys into the tailored world, and the distinctions involved in peaked lapels, shrunken suits (sorry, Pee-wee, but it still looks a little confining, however mod), and so on. The hunting themed outdoor-wear spread is a bit pushy–surely one might want Wellington Boots without the double-barrelled accessory. But the etiquette and history behind various full-length coats (Chesterfield, evening, tweed, and so on) is illuminating.

Even the Marxist might secretively skip to Page 153, for “The Information” section has valuable guidance on matters like organizing closets, folding shirts, tying shoes (straight laced vs. crisscross vs. over-under), hand care and foot massage (oh come on, you know you care about the former even if you won’t confess to desiring the latter), Dopp kit organization, barber terms (thinned out, layered, choppy, razored, texturized), the removal of both body hair (a mercifully laissez-faire approach) and stains (I paid special attention to that one, given my sad history with sauces, dips, toothpastes, and infant spitup of all kinds).

Keep near to you the handy guide on mixing suit-tie-shirt patterns; distinguishing between natural, roped, and padded jacket shoulders; the subtle variations between the Windsor, half Windsor, four-in-hand, and Pratt tie knots; and textile patterns (windowpane, houndstooth, bird’s-eye, etc.)

The “6 Drinks Every Man Should Master” is also helpful, but while I’ll buy the dry martini, old-fashioned, hot whisky toddy, and possibly even the Hemingway daiquiri, when was the last time a dinner guest demanded unconditionally a Paloma or a caipirinha? Maybe the idea is that you’re supposed to be the kind of man to introduce the guest to these treats? I am not that kind of man, and if you want a caipirinha, you’ll have to go elsewhere because I’m fresh out of cachaca.

The diplomatic Marxist might assess this year’s Big Black Book using its own Page 204 guide on noncommital compliments. “You’ve done it again!” “What can I say? It’s really, really something.”

But I’ll take a tip from the “How to Negotiate a Party” box, make my way to the sofa (“Choose the middle . . . you’ll look more social”), sip my fall-appropriate toddy, and say with designer-desire-drunk faux-reactionary zeal, “Good show, old boys.”

It’s going to be a busy week in RL and also SL! We have turkey day and then Black Friday

It’s going to be a busy week in RL and also SL! We have turkey day and then Black Friday – the most craziest shopping day of the year. So, we best get to that decorating mood for both occasions. Friends and family coming over and all that good stuff (most of the time). Here to help, I have put together two dining rooms that I hope inspire you to create your own. One room is a Thanksgiving festive room for us Americans and the other is just a classy eating area.

dangerous dish

Well, I only call this room “dangerous dish” because it’s pretty risky putting modern, vintage, and very vintage things together. The chairs being modern, the room divider being just 70’s vintage and then the dresser being very vintage. However, when you put together matching colors and adjusting pieces just right, you might surprise yourself on what can go with what.

Give thanks to The Loft this holiday season for these tables are great for every occasion! Ohohoho. Anyway, they really are! “These books were written from 1998 to 2004 and are still in print today with over 11,000,000 sold in series. Unlike the adult series, Left Behind, they have no prequels or sequels, but are a set of 40 books focused on the Tribulation. The series was originally due to have 48 books but was cut to 40 as the huge 2 year jump in Ominous Choices cut out a lot of possible material. The Left Behind: The Kids series was originally written for teen and young adult readers. However, the audience has grown to include adults, too. Many adults read The Kids series between the release of new books in the Left Behind series. Most of the audience bought the books for the Judd and Vicki relationship storyline and many were outraged when Judd and Nada became a couple. However, the faithful readers continued and to their relief Judd and Vicki were back together, keeping the interest of the readers.”
