El día de hoy les regalo este evento Marvel de 12 números, el cual, es uno de los mas famosos (y de mejor calidad) que ha tenido Marvel en su haber. En esta serie, la trama gira en torno a que los mas grandes héroes y villanos de Marvel son “raptados” de la tierra por un ser llamado “Beyonder” y son puestos en un planeta lejano para que peleen entre ellos. Claro que todo se sale de control, y Doom empieza a maquinar un  plan para robarle los poderes al mismisimo Beyonder, lo que hace que enemigos tengan que unirse y combatir. Para los noventeros, esta es la versión original de “Las Guerras Secretas” que salieron en la caricatura de Spider-Man de esa epoca, pero sin duda esta esta mucho mejor. Esta es una historia que ningún fan Marvel se puede perder, y como dato curioso, en esta historia es donde Spider-Man encuentra el traje simbiote.

By the time I was around 25, I realised my plans for World Domination weren’t going to come to fruition. So I turned my attention to finishing my already overdue studies of Architecture, and my ever-evolving activities concerning the elaboration of comics.

When I was 6 or 7, I saw at the newsagent’s near my house a copy of a Marvel comic called Secret Wars sitting on the shelf. It was an English version of the American original, where instead of a monthly issue the British editors in Bayswater had decided to cut up the monthly stories into chunks and publish them weekly along with other cannibalised fragments of comics such as Zoids and Machine Man. But I remember being transfixed by the action on the cover, and the colour and strangeness of it all. I was no stranger to superheroes, but I’d never owned an actual comic before, having only come into contact with the genre through Adam West’s Batman and Christopher Reeve’s Superman films. I asked my mother, who I was with, to buy it for me straight away, which, thankfully, she did.

And so I was introduced to a whole new plethora of superheroes, without a Superman or a Batman in sight (the distinction between the Marvel and DC universes weren’t obvious to me at time, as can be fathomed by my youth and no knowledge of comics, but it was confusing at first), but others with which I was engrossed straight away: Iron Man, Wolverine, Thor, Captain America (and the rest of the Avengers), the X-Men and most of all, Spiderman, who’d become my favourite.

But most importantly, it marked the first time I picked up a pencil and paper and started to copy Mike Zeck’s drawings, and began to learn about how to represent people more like they were than the matchstick-men kids usually scribble. That was the moment it all began, and I quickly decided I like this sort of thing. I liked it very much. I began to scrounge my father for his discarded sheets of A4 paper containing obsolete information concerning his business and began to draw on the blank backs of them. I learned how to draw muscles and faces, shadows and perspective, proportion and expression. In one fell swoop, Secret Wars won me over by reconciling brightly-clad bringers of justice and another of my fancies, science-fiction. In the 12-part mini-series, the cream of Earth’s superheroes and supervillains are kidnapped by an omnipotent entity and set against each other on a planet created specifically for the effect. For kicks, the entity, known as The Beyonder has advanced technology and ships on the planet, and buildings to be used as bases for each faction. And so I also learned how to draw spaceships and sci-fi environments, far before learning to do actual existing sorts of backdrops (to be fair, I only learned it while training to be an architect).

My new found knowledge quickly catapulted me to the top of my class in drawing, so much that while studying Greek Mythology in Mrs. Harris’ 1st year juniors class, my rendition of Medusa’s severed head done in chalk on card, complete with fangs, reptilian eyes and purple snake hair was used as a prop of the same Gorgon’s ghastly semblance for a dramatisation of Perseus’ epic tale.

It took me many years to grow out of superheroes, which eventually happened perhaps due to my growing preference for European work over the fast-food American style of comic, or perhaps due to the decreasing quality and ever more complex and numerous titles, characters, story-arcs, questionable aesthetics and apotheosis of pathetic artists in the Marvel Universe. I will, however, remain forever indebted to the entire silliness of costumed do-gooders, and in particular to that tale of lost superheroes flung across the universe, for my skills in doodling.

Afghans oppose U.S. hit list of drunk traffickers

PUBLIC OUTRAGE FEARED Justice system will be undermined, officials say

 KABUL — A U.S. military hit list of about 50 suspected drug kingpins is drawing fierce opposition from Afghan officials, who say it could undermine their fragile justice system and trigger a backlash against foreign troops.

The U.S. military and NATO officials have authorized their forces to kill or capture individuals on the list, which was drafted within the past year as part of NATO’s new strategy to combat drug operations that finance the Taliban. The list is thought to include people with close ties to the Afghan government and others who have served as intelligence assets for the CIA and the U.S. military, according to current and former U.S. and Afghan officials.

Afghan counternarcotics officials expressed frustration that U.S. and NATO military leaders have refused to divulge the names on the list, a decision that they said could undercut joint operations to hunt down opium traffickers.

Gen. Mohammad Daud Daud, Afghanistan’s deputy interior minister for counternarcotics efforts, praised U.S. and British special forces for their help recently in destroying drug labs and stashes of opium. But he said he worried that foreign troops would now act on their own to kill suspected drug lords, based on secret evidence, instead of handing them over for trial.

“They should respect our law, our constitution and our legal codes,” Daud said. “We have a commitment to arrest these people on our own.”

For years, the NATO-led military coalition in Afghanistan ignored the opium trade, saying their mission was to fight the Taliban and al-Qaeda, not drug dealers. Afghanistan’s poppy fields supply about 90 percent of the world’s opium.

At a meeting in Budapest last October, however, NATO defense ministers reversed their strategy and authorized their forces to confiscate narcotics and target drug labs as well as kingpins who provide monetary or other support to the Taliban.

 

Target list of 50
Since then, the U.S. military has developed a target list of about 50 drug kingpins thought to support the insurgency and has ruled that they can be killed or captured “on the battlefield,” according to a Senate Foreign Relations Committee report released in August.

Two unnamed U.S. generals in Afghanistan told the committee’s staff members that the list complies with international law and the U.S. military’s rules of engagement because it contains only drug lords with “proven links” to the insurgency. To add someone to the list, the Pentagon requires “two verifiable human sources and substantial additional evidence,” according to the Senate report.

U.S. Army Col. Wayne M. Shanks, chief of public affairs for coalition forces in Afghanistan, declined to answer questions about the list or to say whether anyone on it has been killed or captured.

The military “is concerned when we see a nexus between insurgent activity or financing and drug trafficking in Afghanistan,” he said in an e-mail. “We regularly conduct operations to limit the insurgents’ ability to intimidate, or otherwise threaten the Afghan people.”

Ali Ahmad Jalali, a former Afghan interior minister, said that he had long urged the Pentagon and its NATO allies to crack down on drug smugglers and suppliers, and that he was glad that the military alliance had finally agreed to provide operational support for Afghan counternarcotics agents. But he said foreign troops needed to avoid the temptation to hunt down and kill traffickers on their own.

“There is a constitutional problem here. A person is innocent unless proven guilty,” he said. “If you go off to kill or capture them, how do you prove that they are really guilty in terms of legal process?”

Need for secrecy
At the same time, Jalali said he could understand why U.S. and NATO officials would want to keep their target list a secret from their Afghan counterparts. Corruption in the Afghan government is widespread, and some high-ranking officials are suspected to be involved in the drug trade.

Jalali said the Afghan government once kept its own secret list of drug traffickers. The list was considered highly sensitive, he said, because many of the suspects had ties to influential Afghan leaders, while others had served as intelligence assets for the CIA or the U.S. Defense Department.

“Many of these people were empowered by the international community when they were fighting the Taliban and al-Qaeda after 9/11,” said Jalali, now a professor at the National Defense University in Washington. “There was no political will to go after them.”

In general, NATO forces have taken a more aggressive approach against Afghan drug operations in recent months, particularly in southern poppy-growing provinces.

In Kandahar, U.S. and British troops are joining a new task force consisting of Afghan police officers, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents and officers from Britain’s Serious Organized Crime Agency. The task force’s mission is to seize heroin stockpiles, blow up drug labs and investigate corrupt Afghan officials.

New approach praised
U.N. officials, who closely monitor the drug trade in Afghanistan, praised the new cooperative approach. They said the joint police-military operations were especially timely because opium production has dropped by more than one-third since 2007 because of a supply glut on the global market.

Jean-Luc Lemahieu, Afghanistan director for the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, said the decline represented a one-time opportunity to make a permanent dent in production levels. He said NATO’s help in going after drug labs and stockpiles had proven effective, but he cautioned the military against taking the fight a step too far.

“Extrajudicial killing is not something you want to see,” Lemahieu said. “Let’s be very, very clear. Don’t expect the military to do the job of a police officer. It won’t work.”

Afghanistan’s nascent judicial system, however, has struggled to enforce the law against traffickers. And when it does win convictions, cases can still fall apart.

In April, five traffickers who had been sentenced to long prison terms received pardons from President Hamid Karzai, who said he intervened “out of respect” for their family members. One defendant was the nephew of Karzai’s campaign manager.

“We have some people, powerful people, inside and outside government, who can freely smuggle drugs,” said Nur al-Haq Ulumi, a member of the Afghan parliament from Kandahar. “If we had an honest government, the government could track down and arrest these people — everybody knows this.”

But Ulumi said it would make things worse if coalition troops began to kill drug dealers. “Already, people feel that foreigners didn’t really come here to reconstruct our country,” he said. “They think the foreigners just came here to kill us.”

Ahmad Big Qaderi, director general of prosecutions for the Criminal Justice Task Force, which oversees narcotics cases and is financed largely by the U.S. government, said NATO forces needed to trust his agency to prosecute drug dealers.

“We should go through the Afghan legal channels to convict criminals,” he said. “We have professional staff here and all the mechanisms to prosecute the big fishes.”

This, apparently, was a comic-con exclusive – but don’t ask me from where – because I have no idea.  Maybe NYCC maybe SDCC – all I know is it is in my house – in my collection – and it’s pretty sweet!  I do wish they made the Hulk have more of an angry look than what looks like a shocked or surprised look – but this 2-pack is pretty sweet.  I actually enjoy the packaging more than the figures themselves!

When I was in London, Mike, one of the kings of FBBB invited me to this doodle event. They’re called Secret Wars. Two teams battle each other by doodling on giant blank boards.

They had this projection of an animation on the wall and anybody that was at the event could draw on it.

Zeichnen gegen die Zeit

Folgende These – die heutige Jugend hat Dank Internet und MTV nicht mehr die Fähigkeit und den Willen, sich länger als ein paar Minuten auf eine Sache zu konzentrieren – wurde gestern widerlegt. 90 Minuten Stillsitzen im Kinosessel ohne Film. Nur Zugucken, wie vier junge Männer mit schwarzem Edding auf zwei mannshohe Leinwände zeichnen. Klingt erstmal langweilig, wars dann aber doch nicht. Der größte Saal im Dresdner Metropolis war am Freitag reserviert für das Finale der Battle-Tour von Secret Wars Germany …

Es traten gegeneinander an: die Dresdner Titelverteidiger im Schnellzeichnen großformatiger Comics Cee. und Cre-ei8ht – der eine offenbar spezialisiert auf sich ineinander verschlingende Drähte, Schläuche und pumpende Maschinen, der andere mit Faible für Dynamik und Rollbänder – gegen den weit gereisten deutschen Vizemeister in der gleichen Disziplin, der Dresdner Caparso, mit Kompagnon Mike Okay aus Halle, Halle an der Saale.

Bis zum vergangenen Abend hatten die beiden letztgenannten bereits eine 17-tägige Tour durch Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz hinter sich gebracht. Sechs Mann in einem Bus – jeden Tag ne neue Stadt, ein Wettstreit, ein Bild in jedem Hafen. Die Trailer zu den einzelnen Stationen, hätte die Technik nicht versagt, wären wahrscheinlich nur halb so schön gewesen, wie das Gedankenkino, das Moderator Ronny, offenbar recht harmoniebedürftig, mit schier ungebremster Mitteilungslust produzierte. Jedes Wort schwebend auf einem live gewebten, minimal-elektronischen Klangteppich.

Noch einmal: Es sitzen im blauen Saal Sieben etwa 300 Zuschauer. Vor der Leinwand sehen sie die Rücken von vier Typen und beobachten 90 Minuten lang zwei Bilder bei der Entstehung. Man kann sagen: das Publikum ist Zeuge einer Kopfgeburt. Erst ein paar Striche, Kurven, Punkte, skizzenhafte, dünne Linien, dann ein grinsender, eckiger Pilot, fliegende Zöpfe, flatternde Ohrwärmer – in der einen Ecke. Die warten auf die Vereinigung oder befinden sich auf der Flucht vor einem fließend schwungvoll gezeichneten Drachen, verbissen in einen Megakopf, ein lebendig gewordener, Antennen spuckender Moloch. Bei Caparso und seinem Kollegen Mike Okay trifft verschnörkelte Fantasy auf ineinander verschachtelte Strukturen in Schwarz und Weiß.

Die beiden Herausforderer Cee. und Cre-ei8ht haben auf den ersten Blick mehr gemein an Stil. Einen großen Teil der Zeit schien es, die beiden rackern sich ab am detailverliebten Kreieren ratternder Rollen, schier endloser Schläuche, rostiger Zahnräder. Irgendwann tauchten doch die ersten Figuren auf: ein versoffener Katzenfutterfabrikant und – hey, da ist doch der Pilot wieder! – eine kleine Raubkopie aus dem Bild links nebenan. Der Flieger, so hatte es den Anschein, sollte die Sonne nicht mehr grüßen, ginge es nach den beiden Herren. Auf dem besten Weg durch zackig-scharfe Metallzähne zu Katzenfutter verarbeitet zu werden, war er. Düster dräuten angedeutete Totenköpfe im Wolkenschleier über ihm und dem übrigen Frischfleisch auf dem tanzen Fließband.

Gewonnen hat laut Applausometer die gelungene Mischung aus Sachsen und Sachsen-Anhalt mit ihrem offenbar weniger auf Battle, vielmehr auf Verarbeitung der Tour ausgelegten Werk. Ein wirklich knapper Zweiter mit zwei Dezibel Differenz sind die beiden Dresdner mit ihrer subtilen Kritik am ökologischen Standart der heutigen Tierfutterproduktion. Wir gratulieren, hatten einen schönen Abend und freuen uns über das geschenkte Tour-T-Shirt, für das wir (um ehrlich zu sein) extra-zeitig zum Ort des Geschehens geeilt sind.

Packaging shots for the 4 pack TRU exclusive based around Marvel’s  Secret Wars comic have been revealed over at Art Asylum.

Anyway on with the pics, but just to say for me its not a great looking set and the only one I would really like is Photon out all four.

Hulk/Cyclops 2-pack

This week started on a Tuesday, right?  Crap – I’m busted… I’ll be honest – I thought I posted this yesterday.  Whoops!  Alright, here it is – the latest Hulk figure from the MU line.  They’ve given this figure a new head mold, a new color – even a new hand!  The head is more 70’s Hulk – which pleases a lot of the Hulk fans – there are quite a few Hulk fans out there that hate the “Moe” haircut that Hulk sported in the 90’s.  I can see what they’re saying, how does the hair disappear from the sides of Hulk’s head?  It’s like the new Samson double personality… how does his hair go from long to short?

The Secret Wars was a 12 issue mini-series that not only introduced Spiderman’s black costume that would later become Venom, but also had an amazing feat by the one and only Hulk – see, Molecule Man dropped a mountain on a bunch of the heroes including Captain America, Iron Man, Spiderman and Mr. Fantastic.  The Hulk – yeah, he held the mountain up from killing all the heroes. 

I like this head sculpt better - and the paint job is better too!

This 2-pack comes with Cyclops – and he’s not a bad character at all, just it seems like a waste to set him up with the Hulk.  I like how this 2-pack is only $12.99 also.  One figure is almost $9.00 – but these are only $4.00 more dollars and come with 2 figures and a comic!

I got ... A-Lien He-ealing!

Okay, so it’s like 30 minutes after the bad guys dropped a freakin’ MOUNTAIN on the Secret Wars good guys, and what’s going on?

1)     When confronted with whether to let an alien – who may or may not be hostile – “help” the fallen heroes, the considered judgment of Reed Richards (Psst! The biggest brain in the cosmos) is “I GUESS CAN’T HURT”!?!?!?! Hey, Reed, how did that thinking work out in a few issues when Spider-Man tries out the clothing machine?

2)     Johnny Storm is ready to get his Captain Kirk on with a piece of alien “strange” he just met. Um … they have STDs on other worlds, dude. And, part of his pick up is a reference to a Culture Club reference!?!?!

3)     James Rhodes is a pilot. He is lead engineer at Stark Industries. He is qualified to operate and REPAIR a state-of-the-art suit of armor. So, why does he sound like Shaft?

BONUS: Um … what exactly is the alien healer hottie doing to She-Hulk? Is that some Barry White form of healing or something?

Man, I love me some Marvel.

Während der Secret Wars Battle Tour werden Mike Okay und Caparso in 18 Tagen und 18 Städten in Deutschland, der Schweiz und Österreich zwei lokale Künstler zu einem illustrativen Wettkampf herausfordern. Mit schwarzen edding Markern treten die Akteure in zweiköpfigen Teams gegeneinander an um innerhalb von 90 Minuten ihr kreatives Können unter Beweis zu stellen. Dabei gilt es für beide Teams den Gegner mit Motivgewalt, Witz oder Ironie auszustechen. Am Ende wird das Publikum per Applaus über Sieg und Niederlage der Künstler entscheiden.

Eu ia só fazer um post aqui sobre um case  que vem acumulando prêmios como 3 leões de Cannes, GP do Clube de Criação de Portugal e Ouro em New Alternative Media do Croquette Awards, além é claro, da minha admiração, já que trata de um assunto que gosto muito, Street Art.

O Secret Wars é um projeto que nasceu em Londres e rapidamente se alastrou por toda a Europa, conforme informa este blog de Street Art português.  É uma batalha em que as crews, grupos de artistas de rua disputam de acordo com as seguintes regras:

- 90 minutos;
- Canetões pretos sobre tela branca;
- Nada de esboços;
- Nada de sprays;
- Puro freestyle;

Os vencedores da Secret Wars são apurados através da utilização de um sistema de 3 pontos: o voto de 2 júris convidados e o voto do público, que é medido através de um medidor de décibeis.

A Reebok já percebeu o potencial da disputa em Portugal por exemplo foi patrocinadora de um evento desses.
