La Toile a cela d’extraordinaire qu’il ne s’y passe pas un jour sans que ses visiteurs ne mettent en exergue ses espaces les plus “remarquables” ! Le site de Ségolène Royal, mis en ligne hier, a provoqué une réaction doublement négative de la blogosphère :

“Désirs d’avenir”, c’est le nom du site, présentait une page d’accueil vieillotte techniquement désastreuse (liens morts,…), au fond d’écran improbable, à la police datée,… A tel point qu’ont été nombreux ceux qui se sont demandés s’il s’agissait d’un fake…

Ce qui est moins drôle dans tout ça c’est que selon l’Express, ce site d’un autre âge aurait coûté 41 600€ !! Ajoutons que l’espace web qui fait rire tout le Net a été réalisé par le nouveau compagnon de Ségolène Royal, André Hadje qui aurait envoyé la note à Pierre Bergé, l’un des soutien de Mme Royal.

Les internautes en tout cas, se lâchent avec un humour auquel je m’attache un peu plus chaque jour.

Une amie à moi travaillait comme assistante bilingue dans une entreprise d’import export de bijoux. Il était presque 13 heures, son heure de pause lorsque le téléphone sonna.

L’interlocutrice à l’autre bout du fil ne semble pas saisir le message.

Là, la “silencieuse” perçoit une brin d’accent. Elle raccroche, puis rappelle. Même scénario. Alors elle s’excuse puis promet de rappeller plus tard.

A 14 heures 30, elle rappelle et tombe à nouveau sur SG en Anglais.

“Ecoutez, je voudrais parler à un responsable’”

“Je suis certainement en mesure de vous renseigner Madame”

“Euhhhhh, je suis un peu ennuyée, Mademoiselle mais tout à l’heure, j’ai déjà essayé de joindre quelqu’un de votre société. Et chose étrange, c’est la femme de ménage qui a répondu.”

“La femme de ménage?”

“Oui? Une noire sans doute.”

“Vous devez faire erreur Madame, ici c’est l’inverse, les noires ne font pas le ménage, elles sont assistantes de directions bilingues ou trilingues. Si vous ne souhaitez pas traiter avec moi, essayez de prendre contact directement avec mon responsable (sous entendu sa ligne privée). Au revoir.”

Je vous raconte ça afin que tous ceux qui liront ceci y compris celui qui croit que mettre un boubou fait de vous une femme de ménage, comprennent que être femme de ménage n’est pas une tare. Il y a des femmes de ménage qui n’ont pas d’autre métier que celui là, il y a d’autres qui deviennent femme de ménage par nécéssité et qui dans un débat bien méné s’en sortiraient bien plus brillament que certains êtres supérieurs. 

Et puis comme le dit Dom, un boubou, c’est un vêtement, de cérémonie, de la vie quotidienne… C’est comme le pantalon et la chemise, ou la robe…

L’ennemi public numéro 1 n’est pas le jeu d’acteur de Vincent Cassel dans Mesrine qui est le même que dans La Haine, le même que dans le Pacte des Loups. L’ennemi public numéro 1 n’est ni une groupie gauchiste adepte de la mythomanie de la rébellion et encore moins cette petite délinquance acnéique qui parle de misère avec 150 euros aux pieds.

L’ennemi public numéro 1 est Olivier Besancenot, oui je sais ce n’est pas très crédible. Tout est une question de budget et de casting ; les Etats-Unis ont Obama, ici nous avons Ségolène Royal(e).

Une question me taraude, pour ne pas dire qu’elle me donne des démangeaisons à l’entre jambe : qui voudrait maîtriser, sans se rapprocher, le postier le plus célèbre de France au charisme égal à celui de Jacques Santini ?

1- Fedex : pour concurrence déloyale et par jalousie des charmants uniformes marine et jaune de la Poste (avant privatisation biensûr),

2- Arlette Laguiller : pour contrefaçon manifeste d’idéologie inapplicable ou vol du brevet sur la “Révolution en 10 leçons”,

3- JoeyStarr : qui a décidé de retourner vivre en couple avec Kool Shen, plutôt que le PACS et l’homoparentalité proposé par Olivier,

4- Le parti socialiste : pour présomption de meurtre prémédité et violation territoriale du troupeau des pauvres et des étudiants (Julien Dray R.I.P.),

5- Un jeune professeur de collège : déçu comme sa portière avant de la crédibilité de la gauche en banlieue et qui pense que Chuck Norris est plus compétent pour faire le sale travail,

6-Alain Soral : parce qu’il a une pilosité d’adulte et que les gens qui ne sont pas imberbes sont méchants,

7-H&M : pour publicité mensongère,

8-Les RG : car la guerre préparant son comeback, il faudra bien des agents doubles,

9-Eric Roth : car Olivier a usurpé l’identité de Forest Gump et de Benjamin Button,

10-Le Président de la République, de la Fédération Française de Football, de l’UEFA, des philatélistes manchots et de l’amical bouliste de Melun : car le postier est le facteur X et son plus gros concurrent au prochain championnat local d’homme tronc,

Avec le temps et beaucoup de médiocrité de la part du reste de l’offre politique, les jérémiades boutonneuses et le dogme gériatrique d’une minorité d’idiots du village ont trouvé une résonnance, peut être un réceptacle et, à coup sûr, une mascotte : un monsieur-tout-le-monde à qui on confère désormais une intrigue, une destinée et un peu d’Histoire, voire sûrement une couverture de Paris Match à terme.

Moralité, même les plaisanteries les plus drôles peuvent mal tourner.

PARIS — As the leaders of the free world clamber to salute and applaud Barack Obama’s historic election, one disgraced French politicienne remains defiant, and defiantly immodest.

“I inspired Barack Obama,” Ségolène Royale told Le Monde, claiming that Obama’s campaign message of unity had been lifted from her own campaign for the French presidency two years ago. “His team copied us,” she said (Time’s quote of the day).

Royale, who is in Washington for the swearing in of the new American President, was current French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s rival in the 2007 election. Since her defeat that year, her Socialist Party (PS), once one of France’s dominant political machines, has been wracked by infighting and clashing egos, and Royale has fallen largely out of public view and popular favor. More recently, she lost a tight race for the post of  First Secretary of the PS, a harsh blow, it would seem, to her apparently inflated view of herself.

Royale’s self-aggrandizement, though, is emblematic of the problems at the heart of her disintegrating Socialist Party. As the quasi-socialist French government becomes ever increasingly antiquated and ill-adapted to a globalizing capitalist world, its leaders have turned to petty tactics of ad hominen attacks against political opponents, and have adopted the desperate, angry tone of the once powerful brought low.

For the sake of France, and it’s ability to remain significant as a global force (economically, socially, culturally) in the 21st century, one hopes that the backward-looking, indignant caste of French politicians, within which Royale has definitively inscribed herself with her most recent comments, will continue to find its dying gasps largely ignored.

Le voyeur le mieux renseigné de Paris n’est pas encore en prison et n’ira probablement jamais : la primeur de ses images revient en effet à son imagination puisque Roland Hours peint.

Pour le plaisir des sens, la future coqueluche de la place du Tertre revisite un des grands classiques de l’Art dans tout : le calendrier. Or maybe ‘off-spectrum’ is a better way to put it. I almost think that to traverse the media gauntlet and get his ideas a more open hearing with the French public, François Bayrou has to assert the same lingual precision he exerted last night on RTL radio when, before answering his host’s quesiton about the economy, he chided him (I’m paraphrasing), “But first, let’s return to your first line: I don’t appreciate the condescension.” His interlocutor had begun by positing “Since you’re an expert on the economy….” I’d missed the sarcasm, but Bayrou nailed it. I’d like to propose that he exercise a similar vigilance the next time an interviewer introduces him as being from ‘the center’ of the French political spectrum, somewhere between Nicolas Sarkozy’s governing UMP party and the putatively opposition Socialists. (Putatively because in recent months, its leaders have been too busy battling among themselves for the job of premiere secretary to consistenly oppose Sarkozy, ceding that responsibility to Bayrou, the League of Communist Revolutionaries’ Olivier Besancenot, and to some extent union leaders.)

If in the United States ‘centrist’ may still be a dirty word among militant Republicans and militant Democrats, in the media, at least, it’s a cause for respect. In the media world of France, however, which has lived with dramatic political cleavage since at least 1789, it’s an excuse for mockery. Thus during the 2007 presidential campaign, pundits who apparently hadn’t listened to the ideas of the man from Nay (a small village in the Aquitaine region just outside Pau, and whose other claim to fame is the Museum of the Beret) pegged him as being ‘mou,’ or soft. In other words, being from the center actually meant having no fixed positions.

In fact, in the case of Bayrou, being from the Mouvement Democratic (Modem for short) — the actual name of his party — means that he looks at issues from outside the traditonal Left-Right spectrum. Yet another example surfaced on last night’s radio interview when the subject of whether to open stores on Sundays came up.

On this issue, speaking generally, the Left or at least the Union movement has opposed it because its members would have to work an extra day. The Right has supported it because it means more work for people — thus more income — and, perhaps, to boost the economy.

Bayrou — showing yet again his native ability to transcend simple positioning and look at the broader, societal implications of policy — said that he opposed opening businesses on Sunday because of the message it would send to our children. “Dans la vie, c’est pas le consummation qui compte le plus,” in life, there are more important things than consummation.

Typically, Bayrou had no doubt been granted this bully pulpit not because the mainstream media is suddenly genuinely interested in independent perspectives like this — i.e. not in his own context — but because, as the Soclalists prepare to vote on a new premiere secretary Thursday, the leading candidate Segolene Royale’s support during the last presidential election for an alliance with Bayrou’s Modem has become a dviding issue, or at least is being exploited that way by the Left–most candidate. He explains his opposition by asking how Socialists can link up with a profound supporter of Capitalism. I would say that rather, this openness signifies Royale’s understanding that if the Socialists are going to win in 2012, they have to appeal to a broader sector than their own militants and, more important, respond to current problems not from their entrenched positions but by looking at them with open eyes and broadened minds, as does Bayrou.

A écouter les uns et les autres au cours de la campagne du congrès, je m’étais amusé à constater la nouvelle vigueur gauchisante de leaders qui ne nous y avaient plus habitué depuis longtemps. Si « Paris vaut bien une messe » me disais-je, Solférino vaut bien quelques élans à gauche ! La crise rendait opportune ce revirement.

Je me suis donc penché avec intérêt sur les propositions que Ségolène Royal a récemment adressées aux autres responsables de motions. Pourquoi celles là plutôt que d’autres ? Parce que Ségolène Royal serait candidate au poste de premier secrétaire, parce ce que je n’ai pas oublié les avances qu’elle a faites à Bayrou ni celles de son lieutenant Peillon lorsqu’il a affirmé, il y a quelques semaines : « Si l’on veut battre la droite de Sarkozy, il faudra bien entrer dans un débat sincère qui pourrait à terme déboucher sur un contrat de gouvernement. »

J’ai noté dans le texte qui se voudrait fondateur d’une nouvelle majorité au PS, deux affirmations qui se voudraient alléchantes :

« Le libéralisme échoue et monte la demande d’un projet de gauche »

« Le congrès de Reims doit être le point de départ d’un patient et passionnant travail de reconquête idéologique ».

Il est indiscutable que nous avons perdu, j’espère momentanément, la bataille idéologique et qu’il faut la relancer pour faire progresser nos idées socialistes. J’étais donc intéressé par ces affirmations. Mais, ô déception !, j’ai cherché en vain dans la suite du texte le début du commencement d’un patient travail de reconquête idéologique.

Faudrait-il mettre à ce rayon la tenue d’un « grand forum global » associant « le mouvement social, les syndicats, les représentants des services publics, les salariés en lutte, » mais aussi « les entrepreneurs, les consommateurs, les petits épargnants » ? Je ne vois pas quelle reconquête idéologique, en tous cas socialiste, pourrait sortir d’un tel rassemblement hétéroclite!

Faudrait-il considérer comme un effort idéologique intense, l’affirmation selon laquelle l’économie productive doit être mise au service de l’épanouissement humain ? Affirmation qui restera pieuse si on ne se donne pas les moyens de contrôler effectivement l’économie ! « Il faut un Etat préventif et stratège » affirme encore, d’un mouvement de menton, le rédacteur : le patronat français en tremble encore !

Rien de plus explicite. Nous sommes très, très très loin du texte défendu par Hamon !

Je lis alors la proposition de « faire du parti socialiste une force neuve ». J’ai dit dans un récent billet ce que je pensais des propositions « d’ouverture du PS sur la société ». Je ne crois pas un instant que c’est de ce côté que viendra la reconquête idéologique. Je crois au contraire que c’est la meilleure façon d’achever le parti socialiste !

Enfin je lis la proposition qui est faite de fédérer la gauche, toute la gauche, autour d’un contrat de gouvernement. Ce qui pourrait se traduire par une réactivation de notre bataille idéologique. Mais j’ai toute raison de demeurer sceptique sur la sincérité d’une démarche qui se voudrait contraire à l’orientation précédente des « royalistes ». D’autant que ses initiateurs ajoutent qu’il faut quand même s’ouvrir au centre!

Je ne suis donc d’accord avec Ségolène ni sur le fond, ni sur le rôle du parti, ni sur les alliances envisagées. Pourquoi faudrait il que je vote pour elle ?

Jeg vil dække kongressen i dag og på næste søndag, som er kongressens sidste dag. For at forstå hvorfor denne begivenhed er af en sådan vigtighed, må man dog først kende baggrunden, derfor vil jeg i dette indlæg beskrive den franske socialismes historie og dets aktuelle problemer og udfordringer og på næste søndag vil der være et opsummerende indlæg om kongressen. Jeg råder Dem stærkt, ærværdige læser, til at læse mit indlæg om det franske politiske system før de kaster dem ud i dette.

   Socialismen er en ideologi der har en meget lang historie, ikke bare i Frankrig. Sammen med konservatismen er det nok verdens ældste politiske retning. Den har rødder så langt tilbage at vi knapt kan spore det, men dens første kendte manifestation var, som så meget andet, i oldtidens Rom.

   På daværende tidspunkt havde Romerriget erobret enorme landmasser som staten så delte ud af imod afgifter. Langt det meste af jorden blev samlet på meget få hænder, og dermed ejede de fleste bønder ikke særlig meget (om noget). Det var altså i en sådan verden, at en mand ved navn Tiberius Gracchus stillede op som folketribun, en af romerrigets højeste stillinger. Han blev valgt i -133 og prøvede at starte en reformbevægelse, hvis mål var at begrænse den mængde jord en romersk borger kunne besidde. Naturligvis var senatorerne ikke særlig venligt stemte overfor forslaget, da de jo selv, som Patriciere, var iblandt de bedre stillede. De fik ham dræbt, under påskud af at han ønskede at lade sig krone som konge, den værst tænkelige forbrydelse under den Romerske Republik.

   Reformbevægelsen var imidlertid ikke nået til vejs ende. Tiberius havde en bror, Gaius, der også blev valgt til at være tribun. Han fortsatte sin broders reformprogram, og udbyggede det betragteligt. Da han var af sted for at bygge en koloni i Kartago, mindskede senatorerne hans indflydelse, og ved valget i -121 blev han slået. Gaius gav dog ikke op. Uenighederne imellem Gaius’ tilhængere og senatets folk eskalerede hurtigt, og selvom Gaius gjorde sit for at holde sine folk i ro, kom det hurtigt til voldelige konflikter. Gaius blev fanget og begik selvmord.

   Dette var nok socialismens første manifestation i verdenshistorien. Vi finder først socialismen i sin moderne form i skikkelse af den franske revolutionære mand, Gracchus Babœuf, der under den franske revolution kæmpede stærkt for sine ideer.

   Hans mål var en kollektivisering af landjorden og lighed imellem menneskene. Intet mindre. Han begynder allerede kampen i sin hjemby Roye, i Picard, da kongen beder hvert sogn redigere et klagehæfte over hvad det mener kan gøres bedre. Dette arbejde tager han stor del i. I begyndelsen af revolutionen gør han op med sig selv, at frihed og kristendom ikke kan eksistere sammen. Hans meninger er endnu for stærke, selv for de såkaldte revolutionære franskmænd, og han begynder at kritisere de midtersøgende krafter der hurtigt tager magten efter revolutionen. Så starter han sin kamp imod indirekte skat og hurtigt bliver han smidt i fængsel. Han sættes fri igen pga. hjælp fra en af de tre store franske revolutionsmænd, Marat. Babœuf bliver ved med at kæmpe, nu imod et system hvor stemmeretten afhænger af hvor meget man betaler i skat, og må flygte til Paris, hvor han efter at have sig meldt ind i en diskussionsklub, bliver fortaler for at også kvinder skal kunne blive medlemmer. Efter endnu en gang at være blevet smidt i fængsel, er han nu nødt til at gå under jorden. Da han ikke længere kan agere i al lovlighed, stifter han De Liges Sammensværgelse, der ønsker at fortsætte revolutionen for at opnå den Perfekte Lighed og den Fælles Lykke. De bliver stikket og Babœuf bliver offer for guillotinen den 27. Maj 1797.

   Hans idéer døde imidlertid ikke med ham. I begyndelsen af det XIX. århundrede begyndte en række filosoffer, for det meste franskmænd, at teoretisere om et alternativt samfund til det kapitalistiske industrielle som var ved at opstå, de ønskede en anden vej. Iblandt dem kan man nævne franskmændene Saint-Simon, Charles Fourier, Étienne Cabet og Philippe buchet, men også den walisiske Robert Owen. Det var i denne tid ordet socialisme blev brugt for første gang, af en vis Pierre Leroux, i 1832.

   Deres doktriner havde deres særlige karakteristika, men der var mere der samlede end der skilte. Ideologien blev senere betegnet som Utopisk Socialisme af Engels (eller kritiko-utopisk i det Kommunistiske Manifest). De ønskede at skabe et socialistisk samfund, så at sige, ex nihilo. Meningen var at folk helt spontant skulle samle sig i kollektiver som så enten skulle beskæftige sig med landbrug eller industri. Fremtidens samfund skulle bestå af summen af disse kollektiver. Filosofferne kaldte disse kollektiver forskellige ting (Phalanstère hos Saint-Simon, Township hos Owen osv.) men fællesnævneren var et det var enorme og meget ambitiøse projekter. De skulle indeholde lejligheder til flere hundreder, om ikke tusinder personer, fælles bad og køkken, skoler, biblioteker og mange andre faciliteter. I dem skulle alle have samme kår og den private ejendom være afskaffet.

   Der har været mange forsøg på at skabe disse kollektiver, det mest succesfulde har være le Familistère i Guise, Frankrig. Den fungerede fra 1846 til 1970 og havde arbejdspladser, smukke og sunde lejligheder (på samme størrelse) til alle, skoler til børn helt op i 14-årsalderen (i Frankrig var det lovligt at lade børn arbejde fra det 10. År), et teater og et bibliotek.

   Indenfor den socialistiske bevægelse nåede denne retning sit højdepunkt i 1870, inden den blev skubbet til side af marxismen. Marx og Engels var den meget taknemlig for dens forberedende tænkning om samfundet, men mente at den lukkede øjnene for den sociale realitet, proletariatets eksistens og for klassekampens vigtighed. Den lever dog videre i alle de kollektiver der er opstået siden, f. eks. i de kollektiver der blev skabt i kølvandet på studenteroprøret i 1968.

   I 1871 opstår verdens første socialistiske regime – i Paris. Det opstår i kølvandet på krigen mod Prøjsen, som Napoleon d. III, indledte og tabte. Da Napoleon bliver fanget i Sedan, abdicerer han for at undgå at blive brugt som gidsel. I våbenhvilen besluttes valget af en Nationalforsamling der skal bestemme om krigen skal føres videre. Da denne bliver valgt, vælges der et enormt flertal af borgerlige kandidater, og Thiers, en konservativ, vælges som midlertidig leder. Han ønsker fred med Prøjsen.

   Pariserne derimod er meget skuffede, dels fordi de for tredje gang er blevet snydt for deres frihed (i 1789 fik modererede som sagt hurtigt magten; da Ludvig-Filip eller borgerkongen bliver væltet af pariserne i 1848, vælges Ludvig-Napoleon Bonaparte som præsident, som konservativ), dels fordi de lige har været igennem en lang og hård belejring, som de nu føler er spildt. Den 18. Marts erklærer Kommunen Paris sig selvstændig, for anden gang indenfor hundrede år. 100.000 af Paris’ vestlige borgere (Vestparis er stadig i dag den rigeste bydel) flygter til Versailles. Der afholdes hurtigt frie valg til Kommunalrådet, der jo de facto er et regeringsorgan, og borgerlige kandidater får også lov til at stille op. Venstrefløjen får selvfølgelig et overbevisende flertal, og højrefløjens valgte vælger hurtigt at sige op.

   Der vedtages meget progressive reformer, som for manges vedkommende først bliver genindført mange årtier efter Kommunens afgang ved døden. Skolegangen bliver gjort gratis, sekulær og lovpligtig, arbejdernes betingelser forbedres meget drastisk, retssikkerheden garanteres (der indføres en art Habeas Corpus) og Kirken og Staten adskilles. Kommunens Politik bærer dog præg af det pres Thiers-regeringen lægger på den. Pressefriheden begrænses, der tages gidsler og kulturelle skatte bliver ødelagt (som Tuileriesslottet).

   Efter blot to måneder, er Paris generobret af regeringen den 28. Maj. De fleste reformer bliver afskaffet og imellem 10.000 og 100.000 kommunarder henrettes uden retssag.

   Efter dette blodbad var den franske socialistiske bevægelse halshugget. Alle ledere var enten døde eller i eksil. Ved fagforeningernes Marseillekongres i 1879 stiftedes FTSF (Frankrigs Socialistiske Arbejderes Federation), Frankrigs første socialistiske parti. Imidlertid fandt Marx’ svigersøn linjen i FTSF for blød og stiftede POF (Fransk Arbejderparti), et marxistparti. Derefter fulgte en lang perioder hvor bevægelsen deltes mere og mere, og flere partier blev stiftet.

   De kunne deles imellem to tendenser: reformister og revolutionære. De ene ønskede fremme af arbejdernes kår ved reformer, enten indenfor det kapitalistiske system, eller mod et egentligt socialistisk regime, de andre ønskede som Marx en revolution. I 1902 blev den lange række bevægelser samlet i to blokke Fransk Socialistparti (reformistisk) og Frankrigs Socialistparti (revolutionært).

   Ved Globekongressen i 1905 samledes de to partier til ét, under pres fra den Anden Internationale. Dette parti kom til at hedde SFIO (Fransk Sektion af Arbejdernes Internationale) og dets leder var én af den franske socialismes måske største mænd, Jean Jaurès (som den eneste har han hele to metrostationer opkaldt efter sig i Paris), der før var leder for det reformistiske parti. Han blev senere dræbt pga. sin modstand mod Første Verdenskrig.

   Efter krigen vedtages det med stor enighed at partiet skal forlade den Anden Internationale pga. dens tilslutning til krigen. Spørgsmålet om hvilken internationale man så bør vælge deler imidlertid partiet. Nogle mener man bør vælge den Socialistiske Arbejderinternationale, men de fleste mener man bør melder sig ind i den Kommunistiske Internationale. Det er også den indstilling der vinder, og deraf følger en deling af partiet. Den største gruppe, de revolutionære, danner SFIC (Fransk Sektion af den Kommunistiske Internationale), imens mindretallet bliver i SFIO. Selvom SFIC lægger ud med at være stærkest, mister de hurtigt indflydelse, da det ligger under det Sovjetiske Kommunistpartis indflydelse og hurtigt blive staliniseret.

   I 1924 dannes der en venstrefløjsregering med radikale og republikanere, med SFIO som støtteparti. Pga. af uenigheder om hvordan Frankrigs enorme statsgældsproblem skal løses, er det dog en meget ustabil regering og den må opløses. Derefter følger der en periode på 15 måneder hvor 6 venstrefløjsregeringer følger hinanden. Da fascismen begynder at vise sit grimme ansigt endes stridighederne mellem SFIC og SFIO endelig og efter en aftale med USSR dannes den Populære Front der består af disse to partier og de radikale. De stiller op med et fælles program og vinder. Det lykkes dem at indføre nogle vigtige sociale reformer, såsom arbejdsugen på 40 timer, lønforhøjelse og betalt fritid. Forsøget på at redde økonomien er dog en fiasko, og da regeringen nægter at hjælpe Spanien under borgerkrigen i dette land, forlader kommunisterne regeringen. I 1937 nægtes Léon Blum fuldmagten af de radikale og dette er enden på den Populære Front.

   Efter Anden Verdenskrig, skaber Frankrig den 4. Republik og der lægges ud med en meget stærk venstrefløj. De radikale, socialisterne og kommunisterne får hver 25% og må derfor samarbejde, men da De Gaulle, som de radikale er trofaste overfor, holder sin  tale i Bayeux om hvordan den 4, Republik bør se ud (noget som han senere opnår under den 5. Republik), nægter de Radikale at forsætte samarbejdet. Under størstedelen af den 4. Republik bliver der ved med at være venstrefløjsregeringer, men efter De Gaulles sejrrige genkaldelse til magten (da alle mener at kun han vil kunne løse problemet med Algeriet), og hans realisering af sine vildeste drømme med den 5. Republiks forfatning, har højrefløjen klart overhånden.

   Det er her Francois Mitterrand, en centrum-venstre politiker der ikke tilhører SFIO, beslutter sig for at stille op som venstrefløjens enhedskandidat til præsidentvalget i 1965. Han  opnår uhørt mange stemmer for perioden (i anden valgrunde får han 45%). Derefter skilles venstrefløjspartierne igen og ved valget til Nationalforsamlingen i 1969 får det ene SFIO kun 5 %. Herefter fusionerer det med en anden venstrefløjsorganisation ved Issy-les-Moulineauxkongressen i 1969, og danner det vi i dag kalder Socialistpartiet (PS), der ved sin anden kongres i Épinay (1971), fusionerer med Mitterrands bevægelse, og som helt frem til 1995 bliver ledet af ham, den anden store figur inden for moderne fransk socialisme. Man må dog vente endnu ti år med højrefløjsregeringer (konservative og liberale), før socialisterne i 1981 vinder både valget til Nationalforsamlingen og præsidentvalget. De sidder nu på enorm magt, og i fjorten år vil Francois Mitterand lede Frankrig (selvom han i perioder må “samleve” med højrefløjsregeringer). Fra 1981 til 2002 var socialismens storhedstid under den 5. Republik. I hele den tid har de enten dannet regering eller siddet på præsidentposten, hvor flere vigtige reformer gennemføres: afskaffelse af dødsstraffen, arbejdsugen på 35 timer, stigning i mindstelønnen, mulighed for pension som 60årig etc.

   Socialismens nuværende krise begyndte i 2002, hvor der afholdtes præsidentvalg. Den tidligere premierminister og leder af PS, Lionel Jospin, var klar favorit før valget gik i gang, men til offentlighedens store overraskelse blev han slået allerede i første valgrunde af højrepopulisten Jean-Marie le Pen fra det ekstremt indvandrefjendske Front National (FN). Dermed kom anden valgrunde til at stå imellem Chirac, den konservative fra det daværende gaullistparti RPR, og Jean-Marie le Pen – et hårdt valg for socialister. Ved det efterfølgende Nationalforsamlingsvalg bliver socialisterne også slået, og Lionel Jospin trækker sig tilbage fra det politiske liv.

   Herefter blev Francois Hollande, den nuværende formand, valgt til posten. De har vundet alle lokalvalg og europæiske valg  siden (sidst ved kommunalvalgene i Marts), men det virker som om befolkningen ikke længere stoler på dem på det nationale plan. Det hjælper ikke noget at PS siden 2002 har snakket om at de ikke gør det godt nok, at de burde moderniseres, hvilket i sig selv er rigtigt, men når man bruger 6 år på at snakke om hvor dårligt et parti man er, og når alle foreslåede løsninger ikke giver valgsejr, er det til at forstå at partiet er i krise. Til præsidentvalget i 2007, var det tydeligt at Francois Hollande ikke var en oplagt kandidat (han er gennemført teknokrat, han har ingen karisma), så valget stod imellem en ny person på den nationalpolitiske scene, Ségolène Royal, og nogle af de gamle travere. Hun vandt overbevisende primærvalget (med 60%) men hun samlede ikke rigtigt de gamle elefanter (et kærligt ord for de gamle travere) bag sig, og hendes program var for modereret for nogle venstrefløjsvælgere. Altså tabte hun.

   Så lige nu står partiet der at man skal vælge en ny leder, men at alle inde i partiet er uenige om hvem. En af elefanterne? I så fald hvilken? En af de moderne? En på partiets venstrefløj? Dette er af central vigtighed, da lederen af partiet højst sandsynligt bliver partiets præsidentkandidat i 2012, og det er et valg der skal vindes, hvis PS ikke vil gå under.

La motion présentée par Ségolène Royal est arrivée en tête avec 29% des suffrages. Les militants socialistes étaient invités à se prononcer hier soir. Martine Aubry et Bertrand Delanoë ont rassemblé autour de 25% des suffrages. Benoît Hamon est arrivé en 4ème position avec environ 19% des voix.

C’est une surprise parce qu’il semblait que l’effet Ségolène Royal s’était évaporé depuis l’élection présidentielle. Sa stratégie étonnait parce qu’elle faisait davantage campagne à l’extérieur du Parti Socialiste plutôt qu’au sein de ses instances.

Les militants socialistes ont choisi de placer en première place la motion d’une femme qui veut bousculer leur Parti et le moderniser. Elle s’est inscrite en opposition aux éléphants et aux vieux briscards du PS et sa stratégie a payé. Certes, ses meetings créaient davantage l’évènement que ceux des autres mais quand même, le résultat est surprenant.

Je crois que les militants socialistes ont désavoué Bertrand Delanoë, certes populaire mais dont la capacité à être le leader était encore à démontrer. Le fait qu’il soit soutenu par la frange la plus ringarde du PS n’a pas arrangé son score. Martine Aubry représenté même avant le vote de sa motion une ébauche de synthèse qui a paralysé leur Parti depuis plusieurs années. Les militants ont désavoué celle en qui ils voyaient “Fabius avec des cheveux”.

Le score de Benoît Hamon n’est pas négligeable… et il montre une progression des idées de la gauche du PS. Il bénéficie évidemment des remises en cause du capitalisme en cette période de crise.

Mais aucune motion n’a atteint la majorité absolue, ce serait trop beau pour ce PS sclérosé. Il me semble tout de même qu’en plaçant la motion de Ségolène Royal en tête, les militants socialistes ont appelé à un leadership pour un PS qui évolue et qui se rassemble.

Sarah Palin speaks to us in a wipe-your-nose and sit-up-straight inflection that is quite Orwellian

We are now several weeks into the weird humiliation that the Republican party inflicted upon us Americans with their choice of Sarah Palin as their nominee for Vice-President. Here we are, at as precarious a crossroad as history is ever likely to offer up, yet there stands Sarah Palin regurgitating George W Bush’s ‘good guys-bad guys’ baby talk. I despair.

When I hear her failing to recall the name of a single newspaper she’d ever read, I feel willing to offer up my teenage son as a sacrifice to the Republican party; he could serve in her stead with so much more fluency. When she prattles smoothly yet non-responsively to questions about the war, economics or foreign policy – or when she brightly changes the subject altogether – I want to weep.

Palin is a never-ending train wreck of ignorance, inconsistency, outright contradiction and sneering. During her debate with Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden, she chatted up soccer moms and hockey moms, her mom and her pop and, by golly, yours too. She winked and she dimpled and ‘goshed’ and ‘doggoned’ it. She gave a ’shout-out’ to some third graders in Wasilla, promising ‘extra credit’ for staying up to listen.

Less remarked upon was the substance. Despite the enormous variety of public crises we face, she dismissed virtually all forms of government regulation by invoking ‘private contract’ rather than collective duty; ‘personal responsibility’ rather than public oversight; and ‘tolerance’ rather than civil rights. She misspoke the name of a commanding general, she went unchallenged when she expressed her arch-creationist belief that humanity has had no hand in global warming, tucking all that away cosily but dismissively: ‘I don’t wanna argue about causes.’

Similarly, Palin was unchallenged in her head-spinning assertions about the powers of the vice-presidency, endorsing an unqualified ‘flexibility’ possibly exceeding Dick Cheney’s assertion of a vastly expanded, alarmingly imperial concept of a ‘unitary executive’. At the same time, her answers were so vague and addled that it was hard to tell if she actually knew what she was saying.

Yet the morning after the debate with Biden, polls showed that the race was still too close to call. If Biden ‘won’ based on knowledge and experience, it was not by enough of a margin to inspire a significant shift. Indeed, pundits of all political persuasions were dissecting Palin’s ability to ‘hold her own’ as though it were an actual measure of whether she could run the republic. Pat Buchanan, gleeful mouthpiece of the far right, celebrated Palin as ‘a fresh voice’ with a ‘new vocabulary’. ‘She tossed away the questions,’ he gloated as though this were a good thing. ‘She answered what she wanted to.’

Presenters on Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News channel lined up to decry the way ‘we journalists’ tend to ‘value knowledgeability’ while true Americans ‘connect to her style’. Greta Van Susteren, an experienced lawyer and ubiquitous television commentator, opined: ‘Whether I agree with her or not, the important thing is whether she’s plain-talking … I may have had the fancy education, but I love the plain talk, the direct words. I’m a Midwesterner.’ (Whew. Whatever is the value of a fancy education if not to inoculate against such blather?)

The enthusiasm for the Alaskan governor reminds me of an exercise I once conducted with students. I played them a segment of the 2007 debate between Ségolène Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy. Very few understood French, so it was effectively an exercise in reading body language. They were convinced that Royal had won the argument because she seemed ‘emphatic’ and ‘passionate’ and ‘repeated her points a lot’.

The clip I had played, however, was Royal’s least convincing moment in that debate: she was delivering a mawkish, inappropriately long-winded tongue-lashing about Sarkozy’s purported failure to tackle the plight of handicapped children. Although her body language might have telegraphed earnest conviction, the words she was repeating with such focused intensity were something along the lines of: ‘I am not going to pieces, I am angry, I am angry, I am angry.’

Even if one’s political sympathies lay with Royal, it was clear why that encounter might have lost her the election. My students accurately translated Royal’s passion and conviction. They also accurately translated Sarkozy’s discomfort at that moment. But without an understanding of the substance of what was said, it would be impossible to see how much her words contradicted the commanding body language.

The enthusiastic responses to Palin’s presentations remind me of that exercise. Yes, Palin’s delivery is perky and self-assured. But if one pays attention to the substance, it’s impossibly vacuous. That so few do pay attention makes me think that listening to the debates must be like a foreign language for some of my compatriots. Perhaps this is laziness or political illiteracy. Perhaps it’s a failure of education. Perhaps there’s a measure of raw racism: better to vote for anyone other than the black guy. Or perhaps it’s a manifestation of gender fundamentalism, by which any biological formation of a woman can stand in for Hillary Clinton.

At least as distracting are the polarities jumbling American political discourse: i.e. not just good versus evil, male versus female, black versus white, but eastern elitism versus western frontier spirit; secular humanism versus speaking-in-tongues theocracy; scientism versus creationism; ‘tolerance’ versus equal rights; ultra-libertarianism versus civic engagement.

The Republicans’ best operatives have been playing these tensions against each other for decades. Against the backdrop of such a frighteningly incoherent cultural landscape, Sarah Palin plays Mom. She speaks to us in a wipe-your-nose and sit-up-straight inflection that is quite Orwellian – if Orwell had anticipated that newspeak might come packaged as old-fashioned-country-horse-sense speak.

And so we love her, Mother Sarah. She’s simple, she’s pretty, she’s as fierce as a tigress protecting her cubs. So what if storms are rattling the windowpanes? We get a glass of warm milk and a big gold star just for staying up late while she tells us reassuring bedtime stories.

Similarly, Palin was unchallenged in her head-spinning assertions about the powers of the vice-presidency, endorsing an unqualified ‘flexibility’ possibly exceeding Dick Cheney’s assertion of a vastly expanded, alarmingly imperial concept of a ‘unitary executive’. At the same time, her answers were so vague and addled that it was hard to tell if she actually knew what she was saying.

Yet the morning after the debate with Biden, polls showed that the race was still too close to call. If Biden ‘won’ based on knowledge and experience, it was not by enough of a margin to inspire a significant shift. Indeed, pundits of all political persuasions were dissecting Palin’s ability to ‘hold her own’ as though it were an actual measure of whether she could run the republic. Pat Buchanan, gleeful mouthpiece of the far right, celebrated Palin as ‘a fresh voice’ with a ‘new vocabulary’. ‘She tossed away the questions,’ he gloated as though this were a good thing. ‘She answered what she wanted to.’

Presenters on Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News channel lined up to decry the way ‘we journalists’ tend to ‘value knowledgeability’ while true Americans ‘connect to her style’. Greta Van Susteren, an experienced lawyer and ubiquitous television commentator, opined: ‘Whether I agree with her or not, the important thing is whether she’s plain-talking … I may have had the fancy education, but I love the plain talk, the direct words. I’m a Midwesterner.’ (Whew. Whatever is the value of a fancy education if not to inoculate against such blather?)

The enthusiasm for the Alaskan governor reminds me of an exercise I once conducted with students. I played them a segment of the 2007 debate between Ségolène Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy. Very few understood French, so it was effectively an exercise in reading body language. They were convinced that Royal had won the argument because she seemed ‘emphatic’ and ‘passionate’ and ‘repeated her points a lot’.

The clip I had played, however, was Royal’s least convincing moment in that debate: she was delivering a mawkish, inappropriately long-winded tongue-lashing about Sarkozy’s purported failure to tackle the plight of handicapped children. Although her body language might have telegraphed earnest conviction, the words she was repeating with such focused intensity were something along the lines of: ‘I am not going to pieces, I am angry, I am angry, I am angry.’

Even if one’s political sympathies lay with Royal, it was clear why that encounter might have lost her the election. My students accurately translated Royal’s passion and conviction. They also accurately translated Sarkozy’s discomfort at that moment. But without an understanding of the substance of what was said, it would be impossible to see how much her words contradicted the commanding body language.

The enthusiastic responses to Palin’s presentations remind me of that exercise. Yes, Palin’s delivery is perky and self-assured. But if one pays attention to the substance, it’s impossibly vacuous. That so few do pay attention makes me think that listening to the debates must be like a foreign language for some of my compatriots. Perhaps this is laziness or political illiteracy. Perhaps it’s a failure of education. Perhaps there’s a measure of raw racism: better to vote for anyone other than the black guy. Or perhaps it’s a manifestation of gender fundamentalism, by which any biological formation of a woman can stand in for Hillary Clinton.

At least as distracting are the polarities jumbling American political discourse: i.e. not just good versus evil, male versus female, black versus white, but eastern elitism versus western frontier spirit; secular humanism versus speaking-in-tongues theocracy; scientism versus creationism; ‘tolerance’ versus equal rights; ultra-libertarianism versus civic engagement.

The Republicans’ best operatives have been playing these tensions against each other for decades. Against the backdrop of such a frighteningly incoherent cultural landscape, Sarah Palin plays Mom. She speaks to us in a wipe-your-nose and sit-up-straight inflection that is quite Orwellian – if Orwell had anticipated that newspeak might come packaged as old-fashioned-country-horse-sense speak.

And so we love her, Mother Sarah. She’s simple, she’s pretty, she’s as fierce as a tiger protecting her cubs. So what if storms are rattling the windowpanes? We get a glass of warm milk and a big gold star just for staying up late while she tells us reassuring bedtime stories.

Frontier Justice

Long before any of us knew about Sarah Palin’s daughter’s baby-daddy, the stage was being set.  And the narrative that preceded her apotheosis was one of life and death.  ”The Palin family chose not to murder that beautiful soul,” said an evangelical friend, as she closed her eyes and lifted her palms heavenward.

“Choosing not” to “murder” is an interesting and controversial cooptation within the abortion debate, but this particular locution had an additional resonance for me.  Only weeks before, this very friend had been going on and on about the marital infidelities of John Edwards and Eliot Spitzer and Bill Clinton.  “I’d kill my husband if he ever did something like that.  In a New York minute.”  I’d heard this sentiment before, of course—I believe Rep. Larry Craig’s wife had said something similar in public, some years before her husband was arrested in Minneapolis, in the same airport bathroom through which so many Republican delegates are no doubt traipsing all this week.  That Mrs. Craig did not in fact murder her husband was a source of some barely-suppressed disappointment to my friend.  She herself is loaded for bear.

In a nation where one third of teenage girls will get pregnant (though few bear them to term) and one half of all marriages will end in divorce, we nevertheless do love the litany of how shocked! and outraged! we  are at the loose morals of others. Hidden within these repetitive passion plays about cheating and betrayal, however, is a narrative that is quite confining when it comes to complex notions of women as autonomous or liberated.  Here’s a paraphrased but no doubt familiar progression of the discussion about cheating politicians:  Men are dogs.  How can they be so stupid?  They have no brains.  Their nether organs do their thinking for them.  Why does he do this to his good, honorable, long-suffering wife?  Why does she stand beside him, so stoically, so stiff with humiliation?  Why doesn’t she leave him, let him stand on that podium and apologize to the world by himself?  Why doesn’t she kill him? 

Universally it boils down to that hyperbolic but emphatic refrain:  “I swear, I’d kill him.” 

There’s a certain kind of Lorena Bobbitt-ish bottom line in this well-practiced narrative; Lorena, you will recall, just picked up the proverbial kitchen carving knife and chopped off her husband’s offending organ. In other western countries, there is surely scandal, scandal everywhere, just like in the United States.  What’s different here, I think, is that our political imbroglios are drenched in subliminal desire that the wife murder the husband.  Symbolically speaking, of course.  In Europe, it seems to me, it’s more casual, less deadly; maybe she’ll let loose and poison his pasta, but more likely she’ll get out there and have a few affairs of her own, like Cecilia Sarkozy or Segolene Royal. 

Here in the US, there’s not merely the element of rage and loss that accompanies any heartbreak, there’s also the medievally misogynistic media/cultural assumption that if a husband doesn’t love his middle-aged wife, no one else ever will.  A woman over forty is dead, love-wise.  Her lying, cheating husband didn’t just humiliate her, he took away her honor and her life, his fidelity being her only tribute to desirability.   If she doesn’t have the comforting catharsis of killing him, metaphorically at least, she’ll die alone, shriveled and prune-like, and covered in bristles. 

I think this is the deeply coded reason so many women identified with Hillary Clinton at a certain point in time–not just in the wake of her husband’s legendary adventures, but also when the likes of Rush Limbaugh were cackling about how wrinkled and hag-like they thought she was.  If only she had been the nominee, she would have had a chance for vengeance, for comeback, for sweet irony, for the strength of resurrection.  When she didn’t win, she lost more than the election.  She broke the hearts of many emotionally invested women of a certain age who want to kill their duplicitous husbands, ex-husbands, or anyone like them.

Karl Rove clearly understands this.  I’m pretty sure that’s the real reason Sarah Palin is the Republican vice presidential nominee.  This is a woman whose nickname in high school was “Barracuda,” who shoots her own moose meat; and, as governor of Alaska, proposed a $150 bounty for those citizens who bring in the foreleg of a wolf as a way of eliminating them.   She is a lifelong member of the NRA and favors shooting grizzlies and polar bears from helicopters, to hell with whether the EPA thinks they’re endangered.  She is being investigated for a possible breach of ethics when she apparently used her public position to pressure the police department after she felt that they didn’t sufficiently punish her brother-in-law for allegedly battering her sister and tasering her 11-year-old nephew.   Her office is decorated wall-to-wall with dead animal skins, heads, carcasses. 

I suspect this is at least partly why so many otherwise “feminist” women are willing to overlook the ironic contradiction inherent in Bristol’s situation given her mother’s public posturing regarding “abstinence only” and “just say no.”  It’s as though they’ve got pixie dust in their eyes, blinding them to the reality that, even regardless of sexual politics, there’s a lot else to worry about in what Palin endorses.  She wants creationism taught in public schools.  She doesn’t believe in global warming.  But all that potentially vital controversy is treated as secondary to the fact that she is a peppily suggestive version of Thelma or Louise. She is no long-suffering good-wifely sort. You get the distinct impression that she’d pick up a gun and shoot Bill or Larry or Eliot or John in a heartbeat.

Surely there’s something deeply visceral going on in Palin’s apparent appeal to women who’ve “been done wrong.”   But there’s more than mere sentiment:  for too many people, this translates into a deep, anti-democratic, ultra-libertarian failure of ethical engagement.  What’s putatively most wrong about our accumulated scandals, in other words, is not the sex per se, but any breach of fiduciary relationship in the political realm, rather than in the domestic or religious realm. 

With regard to the matter of her allegedly battering brother-in-law, for example, Sarah Palin could have done what Senators Obama, Clinton and Biden did: worked to write, pass and enforce laws like the Violence Against Women Act.  Instead she did the vigilante thing—she apparently took the law into her own hands, using her role as governor to pressure the head of her local public works department to resign.  A bipartisan commission later reinstated him.  However sympathetic one may be to her sister’s plight, what Palin is alleged to have done is corrupt.  Yet in an age when movies extol the lonely righteous outlaw, the line she crossed is so often trampled that we don’t see it or appreciate it anymore. 

  But the ethics of executive responsibility mean that you can’t use or abuse the enhanced power of your public or fiduciary authority for personal ends.  There is a rationale, a logic, behind the due process that is at the heart of our justice system.  Our institutions of governance require that there be distance between the meting out of either reward or punishment and the passions of overly-emotionally-involved decision-makers–whether amorously smitten (as in instances of nepotism) or furiously wounded and “bitter” (as in Palin’s sister’s divorce). 

The term “frontier justice” is always put in quotes for a reason.  It is not the mark of a great civilization.  It is messy and often results in mistakes of terrible magnitude.  Ultimately this is what worries me about men or women in public life, whether married or single, who engage in the conceit of indulging personal ends by taking advantage of the power of their positions.  Clarence Thomas evaded answering questions about his behavior toward Anita Hill by declaring that it was none of anyone’s business what he did in the bedroom as opposed to the boardroom.  But, however the media ran with that, the ethical concern in that hearing was precisely founded upon the fact that the encounters did not occur in the bedroom; furthermore, at the time of the alleged misbehavior, Thomas was the head of the EEOC—the very agency charged with prosecution of harassment in the workplace. 

My evangelical friend believes that “sinning” is a public matter, and that the government has a responsibility to discourage all premarital sex.  She wants to recognize fertilized ova as persons with full legal rights.  She also believes that a husband’s straying is adequate defense in a court of law when his wife hops in her SUV and drives over him a few times.  I do not. 

Here’s my bottom line.  John Edwards, Larry Craig and Bristol Palin may have committed excruciatingly painful breaches of “family values,” but that’s a private matter.  It’s really none of my business.

What is impermissible, however, is the use of public power either as a personal weapon or a personal reward system—for example, using public funds to pay for one’s prostitute, as Governor Eliot Spitzer is alleged to have done. Or promoting one’s mistress to a cushy job, as Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is said to have done.  Or demoting someone for failure to do your private bidding, which is exactly what Sarah Palin seems to have done.  For that is the ideology of banditry.  No matter how well-intentioned, such deployment is irresponsible, because responsibility to others is the first rule of representative government.  And this, rather than the prurient details of who boinked whom, is what we need be most concerned about. The kind of narcissistic entitlement that hides in, wallows in or takes actual pride in unaccountability is the antithesis of the role demanded of a public servant.
