Năm 1945, Hiroshima và Nagasaki chìm trong biển lửa. Nhật Bản đầu hàng. Kinh tế suy kiệt. Người dân gào khóc. Song trong cơn cùng cực, xã hội vẫn nuôi hy vọng. Tương lai nước Nhật lúc bấy giờ trông đợi vào quyền lợi và những cá nhân có thể làm nên sự thay đổi. Mà một trong số đó, là sự vươn lên của nữ quyền.

Tome Kano là một cô gái làm việc tại quán bar Heaven nằm giữa khu Ginza sầm uất. Thế chiến thứ hai đã cướp đi của cô tất cả. Không gia đình, không tiền bạc, nhưng thẳng tính và khẳng khái, Tome nhiều lần lên tiếng bảo vệ các cô gái trong quán trước những hành động khiếm nhã của thực khách. Cho đến khi Royal Sakuraba xuất hiện. Ông ta đưa ra một lời đề nghị kì quặc cho các cô gái rằng nếu họ giúp làm một việc thì mỗi người sẽ được trả 3000 yên. Và tất cả chỉ là việc ném bóng và chạy thật nhanh, cốt để thành lập một đội bóng chày nữ mang tên Candys. Nhưng trong cả đội, ông ta chỉ muốn một mình Tome chơi thật sự, bởi cô có nhiều tiềm năng hơn cả.

Trong những bộ đồng phục sạch sẽ, họ là những cô gái có nhan sắc mà Royal Sakuraba tin rằng họ sẽ chứng minh được phụ nữ có thể trở nên chuyên nghiệp ở bất kỳ lãnh vực nào. Nhưng họ chỉ chơi vì tiền, và Tome cũng vậy. Thậm chí họ còn không thực sự quan tâm đến bóng chày. Thế nhưng, điều gì đã xảy ra trong trận đấu đầu tiên của họ, khiến Tome quyết định trở thành cầu thủ bóng chày chuyên nghiệp – chuyện mà trước đây cô chưa từng nghĩ đến?

Nhận định riêng:

Tetsuwan Girl không có chút liên hệ nào với Jiraishin, với Alive, với Skyhigh hay bất kì bộ truyện nào khác của Tsutmou Takashi, nhưng không khí giữa cả tác phẩm của ông dường như luôn có một sự nối kết nào đó.

Câu chuyện về Tome Kano có vẻ lại là một chuỗi tình tiết không giống với bất kỳ tác phẩm nào trước kia của Tsutomu-sensei. Và tin hay không thì nó cũng nói về bóng chày một cách riêng biệt. Bóng chày nữ. Ở cuối thập niên 40, ít lâu sau khi Nhật Bản bại trận trong Đại chiến thế giới lần hai, đó là thời điểm cựa mình thay đổi của một quốc gia ôm ấp trong mình những truyền thống và tinh thần mạnh mẽ. Mà phụ nữ là một trong những nhân tố làm nên sự thay đổi đó.

Tome là nữ cầu thủ ném bóng trong đội bóng chày nữ Candys. Cô có những bước chạy nhanh nhẹn và một cánh tay có thể tạo ra cú ném “sát thủ” – mà sau này được gọi là “Người đẹp có cánh tay thép” huyền thoại. Cùng với những nữ đồng đội của mình, Tome vừa chơi bóng chày để kiếm sống, và sau này là để ước mơ. Song họ cũng phải liên tục đối đầu để vượt qua những kỳ thị, âm mưu hay kế hoạch kì lạ đã được xếp đặt sẵn, bởi trong thời điểm đó, phụ nữ vẫn chưa thể có được vị trí và quyền hạn như bây giờ. Không có sự thay đổi nào là dễ dàng trong cuộc sống.

“Cô không thể nào hiểu được điều đó như thể sinh ra mà không có tài năng gì. Tất cả máu, mồ hôi, nước mắt đổ ra mỗi ngày đều không thể khiến cô đến gần mục đích hơn. Cố gắng ấy thật vô ích bởi Chúa đã không dành nó cho cô.”

“Nhưng chẳng ai cản được nếu tôi muốn.”

Được hướng dẫn bởi một người bạn có hiểu biết về bóng chày, Tamako Tsuchiya, Tome dần dần nhận ra được sức mạnh của mình. Là một cô gái tự tin và cá tính, Tome muốn “thử sức” với môn thể thao này theo cách của cô. Song trong trận đấu đầu tiên, sự tự tin ấy đã bị lung lay.

Và Tome thú nhận, lần đầu tiên cô thấy sợ.

Chẳng có gì ngạc nhiên khi con người biết sợ. Điều khác biệt là sau khi nhận ra nỗi sợ đó họ sẽ làm gì. Cũng như một số nhân vật trong Alive, hay đó cũng chính là lý tưởng của Tsutomu-sensei, sự sợ hãi khiến con người thay đổi. Tome đã vuốt mồ hôi, ngước mặt lên và đủ can đảm để tiến về phía trước. Không phải vì cô không còn gì để mất, mà vì cô nhìn ra sự khác lạ trong những thứ xung quanh mình. Lần đầu tiên cô thực sự không muốn thua và chỉ muốn làm một điều gì đó vì bản thân, chứ không phải vì người khác.

“Thật khó chịu. Tôi không thể nhìn thẳng vào nó được.”

“Cái gì?”

“Mặt trời. Dù tôi cố mở mắt thì vẫn không thể, vì nó quá chói chang. Nhưng nếu không có nó, thế giới này sẽ trở nên lạnh lẽo, tăm tối. Và chúng ta sẽ không thể làm gì được nữa. Dù nó quan trọng như vậy, chúng ta lại không thể nhìn được nó. Không phải điều đó rất khó chịu sao?”

Lẽ nào chỉ cần là phụ nữ thì “thành công”, là không thể?

“Tất cả những gì tôi biết về mặt trời… là nó đang hừng hực cháy trong ngọn lửa.”

Tome Kano, cô gái đã mất tất cả trong cuộc chiến. Katsumi Ranzaki, nhà đầu tư đã mất tất cả bởi không tham gia cuộc chiến. Họ có cách nhìn nhận khác nhau, nhưng đều chán ngắt những ngày tẻ nhạt và muốn “sống thật” ít nhất một lần cho mình. Liệu sức mạnh tinh thần và quyết tâm của họ, khi gặp nhau, sẽ tạo nên kì tích cho đội bóng chày nữ?

Đã quá trễ để quay đầu lại.

Vì đây là lúc Tome và Katsumi đón nhận thử thách mới. Bóng chày nữ chỉ mới là sự khởi đầu, nhưng là sự khởi đầu gây náo động. Một câu chuyện thú vị không chỉ bởi nét tính cách hiện lên qua những khuôn mặt sắc cạnh, mà còn bởi ánh mắt không chấp nhận bóng tối ập đến khi chưa thể chiêm ngưỡng hết sự lộng lẫy của ánh mặt trời.

Nhận định riêng:

Không phải lúc nào bạn cũng có cơ hội đọc một seinen lấy Châu Âu thế kỉ cũ làm đề tài chính. Hãy để đầu óc mình thư giãn một chút, quên đi cuộc sống hiện đại thay đổi liên tục, trở về với những câu chuyện lãng mạn thế kỉ 19 bằng tranh.

Emma là câu chuyện tình ngọt ngào kinh điển. Lấy bối cảnh nước Anh thời Victoria, Emma là tổ hợp của những chi tiết tinh tế trong nhiều phương diện, từ những chiếc khăn ăn, khăn tay, họa tiết trên muỗng, nĩa, đến những nhà kính, dinh thự sang trọng của giới quí tộc và các tiểu thư, công tử… Bộ truyện đã cho thấy sự tỉ mẩn và trau chuốt trong từng nét vẽ, và đã làm sống lại thế kỉ 19 của một Luân Đôn xa hoa tráng lệ. Ở đó, bạn sẽ bắt gặp những bộ áo váy đơn giản mà lộng lẫy, những phu nhân với chiếc quạt hoa phe phẩy trên tay, người tỏa mùi nước hoa thượng hạng, và những quý ông thanh lịch trong cả điệu nhảy của mình.

Bên cạnh sự choáng ngợp vì những tiểu tiết đặc sắc ấy, nhân vật chính Emma xuất hiện trong dáng vẻ dịu dàng, hiền hậu mà vẫn thấp thoáng chút hiện đại. Một cô hầu gái đeo kính, có học thức, biết cách cư xử và đã dễ dàng chinh phục William. Có lẽ sức hút của cô chính ở sự khiêm tốn, nhã nhặn và lễ độ ấy. Emma đã từng chút, từng chút thay đổi anh. Và William cũng từng chút một thay đổi cô, từ một cô gái trầm lặng, trở thành một cô gái dễ thương, cởi mở hơn và biết bộc lộ cảm xúc của mình. Tình yêu của họ ấm áp, ngọt ngào như cơn gió xuân thổi qua nhành hoa lily trắng.

Lẽ đương nhiên, chuyện tình của hai người ở hai giai cấp khác nhau, trong quan niệm thời ấy thật khó chấp nhận. Trong Emma, tầng lớp quý tộc được khắc họa rõ nét với những con người khác nhau và những thái độ khác nhau. Nhắc đến quí tộc, người ta nghĩ đến sự giàu có, thể diện và sự hợm hĩnh, thậm chí là tàn nhẫn, nhất là trong cách phân biệt đối xử. Nhưng sự xuất hiện của tiểu thư Eleanor Campbell, mẹ của William, phu nhân Aurelia Jones, hay bà chủ mới sau này của Emma trong gia đình người Đức di cư Mölders,… đã làm cho không khí câu chuyện trở nên ấm áp và dễ chịu hơn; để rồi sau khi gấp quyển truyện lại, bạn sẽ nhận thấy thật ra giới quí tộc là không hoàn toàn đáng ghét, vì ai cũng có nỗi đau của riêng mình.

Còn một nhân vật nữa cần được nhắc tới – Hakim Atawari, chàng hoàng tử Ấn Độ, bạn học cùng Đại học với William. Anh thẳng thắn, dễ tính, hay quan sát và là người bổ sung tính cách cho một William Jones thường hay dè dặt trước sức mạnh của hai từ “quí tộc”. Hakim cũng yêu mến Emma ngay từ lần đầu gặp mặt và đã thẳng thắn bày tỏ với cô sau đó, nhưng bị từ chối ^ ^ Anh ở lại Luân Đôn đơn giản chỉ vì muốn xem mối quan hệ phức tạp nhưng thú vị giữa Emma và William sẽ tiến triển ra sao. Chẳng biết có phải sở thích hay không mà Hakim đem mọi thứ từ Ấn Độ sang trang hoàng khắp nơi, từ căn phòng của mình (trong nhà Jones) cho đến chuyện cưỡi voi trên đường phố.

Emma là một bản nhạc cổ điển tao nhã và duyên dáng. Bạn sẽ có dịp đắm chìm vào những tòa kiến trúc đồ sộ cổ kính và những buổi tiệc sang trọng. Ở đó, bạn sẽ gặp Emma, cô hầu gái dễ thương và e thẹn, để biết rằng con đường đến được tình yêu thật sự của cô không hề rải đầy hoa hồng. Và sự lôi cuốn của manga này, có lẽ cũng xuất phát từ những chi tiết tưởng như nhỏ nhặt nhất trong cuộc sống.

Đừng quên xem Anime của Emma để tìm ra sự khác biệt nhé. Manga này đã nổi tiếng và được yêu thích đến mức bộ đồng phục hầu gái trở nên phổ biến khắp nơi, có một quán café chủ đề riêng ở Shinjuku, và các bản anime gốc lên đến 45000 yên đấy.

Vagabond is back with a somewhat short chapter, but more importantly, still no signs of 284. We are just going to release subsequent chapters as normal since there really is no indication of it getting filled anytime soon (not to say I don’t deeply hope it does). We know, it’s a pretty lame situation, but what are ya gonna do. Anyways, I apologies for tempting all the people that refuse to skip chapter 284. Also, we should get really back in gear after thanksgiving break is over, so look forward to it.

Oh, I just noticed too, happy birthday us. It’s already been a year as of today. (Kinda disappointed I forgot. Maybe we’ll do a belated birthday blowout later or something, no promises though.)

E’ una storia che dura lo spazio di un solo volume, eppure mette in campo tante situazioni ed episodi di vita che sembra, alla fine, di aver assistito a un film. E’ un fumetto che parla di sogni e ne parla tanto con i toni colorati e vivaci di chi sa crederci, quanto con l’amarezza disincantata di chi deve commisurare questi sogni alla realtà di tutti i giorni. Forse sono sogni troppo grandi, utopie, ma servono come speranze per distogliere l’attenzione dallo squallore della quotidianità, dalle delusioni della vita ordinaria. Il sogno comune a tutti i protagonisti, allora, l’America con le sue promesse di libertà e carriera, si staglia in maniera netta contro i soffocanti formalismi e le gerarchie invalicabili del Giappone. Ma si scontra anche con il disincanto dell’amore, con la consapevolezza di come il lavoro può contare più dei sentimenti sinceri, diventando così emblema di quella soglia che divide la totalità dell’emozione adolescenziale dalla consapevolezza pacata della riflessione matura. Tutti i protagonisti, però, ciascuno in modo diverso e seguendo il proprio percorso di vita, si trovano ad un certo punto a misurarsi con questo sogno: ne guadagneranno o ne perderanno anche a seconda di quanto si metteranno in gioco. Non concede ingenuità questo manga, non si abbandona a fantasie prolungate. E’ un ritratto di vite, più o meno complicate, più o meno ordinarie. I sogni, ci insegna, hanno comunque bisogno di compromessi. A volte vanno rimandati, a volte scompariranno del tutto, ma comunque non torneranno mai folgoranti e definitivi come ci erano apparsi all’inizio.

Unfortunately, no sign of Vagabond as of yet, *sigh*. Also, with this you get the Jesus extra (not UDDUP, per se, but related) I mentioned in the last time. Ever since the first mouse appeared in full moon 2000 years ago, many animals had been turned into new breed human-animal mix. Toraji is one of them. He used to be Rio’s pet. When Magic Mouse took Rio, he also turned Toraji into cat mix.

Pai Yan, Rio’s father, is one of the 7 heroes who had been fighting mouse for years. When he found out that his son is kidnapped, Pai Yan travels to find the Magic Mouse.

Adapting to be human is not easy for Toraji and Pai Yan. Pai Yan is always angry when Toraji acts like cat who always sleep and let his fur everywhere. On the other side, Toraji doesn’t like to be human. He scares when Pai Yan yells at him.

However, the journey gives both of them lesson. Pai Yan learns how to take care of a son, something he never done before. That’s why his wife left because he never come home. While Toraji starts learning how life would be if he had a father (like Pai Yan?).

I actually doesn’t like Tamura Yumi sensei for her dark scary drawing. But, I can’t stop reading her work. I follow 7 Seed (Oh, please finish it before you start another story!!) and now this Toraji. There’s something magic in the way she tells story.

I read Bitter Virgin a couple months back because I kept hearing about how popular it was. And it was on the top viewed other manga on One Manga (where I read a lot online cause I’m poor and am slowly collecting manga when I can). The title was one of those things that made me go “what?” and forced me to go check out what it was all about. It got the better of me and I had to read it.

This is like my spoiler-free post cause it won’t be very long. 8D (mostly cause I’m hella lazy right now).

The story is about high schooler Suwa Daisuke, who’s a major player~ At the beginning of the story, he’s asked if there is any girl he wouldn’t go for and he answers Aikawa Hinako, the quiet loner of their class. But, of course, he really thinks nothing of this question. Unfortunately, Hinako happens to hear this. Daisuke’s attitude towards her changes however when he’s in the local church (that no one really enters after a rumor it’s haunted or something) and he hides in the priest’s booth. The person coming into the church happens to be Hinako and she goes to the confessional. Daisuke pretends to be the priest so he won’t get caught. Thinking he’s the priest, Hinako makes a confession to him.

She tells him how she’s been sexually abused by her stepfather who got her pregnant and she had to give up her child for adoption. After hearing about Hinako’s tearful past, Daisuke’s initial dislike for her turns more into concern for her and compassion for the situations she’s been put in. Afterwards, the two begin to make friends, though Hinako knows nothing of him knowing her deepest, darkest secret. Believing he has absolutely no romantic interest in her (after him saying so earlier, over that question), she begins to feel comfortable around him, as she doesn’t feel safe or comfortable around other men due to what her stepfather had done.

Bitter Virgin is then the story of their relationship progressing and the many, various obstacles that they have to overcome.

All in all, I think it’s a very sweet story, though also very sad. Something that I like about it is how real the characters feel. They don’t have over-the-top, extreme personalities; they nice, normal (well….most of them) people. And they react to the situations they’re put in as you would think people their age would react, not like some hero who’s bent of saving the world the way a lot of protagonists and their teams would react. It gives a good feel to the manga and makes it much more realistic.

If you have the time, definitely give it a good read. It isn’t licensed in English yet so if you want to read it and can’t understand Japanese, you might want to find some scans for it.

Characters of Importance

Suwa Daisuke: He’s our protagonist. He’s initially a ladies man but eventually develops a liking to Hinako, who he’s very concerned and protective of now. He knows her darkest secret though she doesn’t know it.
Aikawa Hinako: Daisuke’s classmate who had confessed to him thinking he was a priest about being sexually abused. She has a fear of men but is now comfortable around Daisuke.
Ibuse Kazuki: Daisuke’s classmate and self-proclaimed girlfriend. She’s on the verge of obsession with him and is extremely jealous of Hinako.
Yamamoto Yuzu: Daisuke’s childhood friend and classmate.
Suwa Izumi: Daisuke’s older sister.

Seigi Keikan Monju

Monju is a sophisticated robot who used to be assigned in Tokyo. After the second generation of his type released, Monju is transferred to a small town. It makes him depressed, because he used to be an elite cop. He has no idea what to do here. The citizens are afraid of his look, kids bullying him and his partner is total jerk. Even so, that playboy partner, Junpei Yamagishi, tries many things to help Monju get along with the citizens. He lets Monju play the hero part rescuing those bullying boys and accompanying the elders on Tokyo trip. Monju’s presence is gradually accepted.

Everybody needs to feel that they’re useful. If not, they’d be depressed. I think I understand what Monju feel. I mean, all those tactical weapon of him could not be used in small town, right? He’s getting rotten. Ha ha ha
Despite of the robot typical theme, this manga is very human. You’ll love it!

Y no me refiero a la pelicula gringa ¬¬, si no de la adaptacion al manga de las historias de Koji Suizuki (The Ring), donde nos presenta 4 relatos cortos relacionados con lo tenebroso y oscuro que puede ser al agua.

El planeta azul en que vivimos tiene ese color porque el mar ocupa el 70% de la superficie… Alli se encuentra el origen de la vida, nos fascina, nos aterroriza

Asi empieza esta serie de historias, ilustradas por Meimu en las cuales podemos encontrar tramas como:

Dark Water: (Si ya vieron la pelicula, les recomiendo leer esta historia) Una madre soltera y su hija viven en un edificio de mala muerte, aunque suficiente para que la madre puede pagarlo, donde 2 años atras, una niña de la misma de edad, desaparecio misteriosamente, ahora sucesos extraños ocurren alrededor de esta familia.
Crucero a Yumenoshima: (Si vieron Masters of Horrors, Dream Cruise esta basada en esta historia) Un bote con varios pasajeros se detiene en el medio de la bahia, que es lo que detiene a este bote, y por que los pasajeros no quieren averiguarlo.
A la deriva: El relato mas corto de los 4. Usted conoce alguna historia de barco fantasmas, ¿que les ocurre a los pasajeros de los navios que parecen desaparecer sin dejar rastro?, de eso se trata esta historia.
Un bosque bajo el mar: Un hombre queda atrapado en una cueva, en un intento de revivir su audacia juvenil, años mas tarde su hijo sigue sus pasos.

Soy fanatico del terror psicologico, y esta es una de las historias que demuestran que no solo con asesinos con mascara se puede producir una sensacion de escalofrio, algo que llamamos liquido vital, puede traer las peores desgracias, muertes insospechables, y psicosis en las personas.

It’s always nice to see the raws come out quickly after release. Unfortunately Vagabond doesn’t have the same luck with the raw gap of 284 (or the gap just before that). Anyways, let’s hope the raw situation holds in it’s new positive trend for UDDUP.

Edit: Also, we got an short aside from the manga series Jesus that features Mamoru and Haruka. It’s not much, only a few pages, but it should be interesting nonetheless. We’ll do that sometime soon.
