Two librarians in KY have been fired because they kept the book with its graphic drawings (pun intended) purposely out of circulation. I did see some of the images and they are unabashedly sexual in nature. The article I linked was how Greensboro Libraries chose not to include the book because it was categorized “Adult” in the material they use for selection.

One of the librarians in KY, kept the book perpetually checked out so that no one else could check it out. When it was put on hold, she went and viewed the patron’s records to find that the patron was 11, so she overrode the hold and checked it out again.

How do you feel about librarians playing parent in this way?

btw, the librarians were fired because their system has adopted parts of the Library Bill of Rights as their policy which says that access is equal and not dependent on any factors (like age).

I read an interesting article recently in which Ruth Spellman, the Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute, highlighted the CMI’s drive to sign up both private and public sector organisations to a Manifesto for a Better Managed Britain. This it would appear had come from a survey the CMI conducted, which highlighted some frightening statistics. More than half of all employees have quit a job because of bad management. Half believe they can do a better job than their boss. Perhaps most worrying was the fact that 85% of those surveyed did not trust the information they were being provided with by their managers.

This economic climate has created a lot of bad publicity for leaders, in particular from the banking sector, and redundancies always create an environment of mistrust and fear amongst workers. However the article got me thinking, is it that we are behind the rest of the world when it comes to management development or is it the way we select our managers that is actually the problem?

In many businesses I would argue that employees are picked for promotion on the basis of being very good at their job. The Sales Manager invariably has been promoted because he or she was the best Sales Person, not necessarily the person with the best Management Skills or potential. Does the best brick layer necessarily make the best Manager on a building site? Can a great Actor direct great movies? We can all think of examples of tremendous Footballers who have not gone on to make successful Managers. Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho never made it as professional footballers and yet are arguably two of the most successful managers in the modern game. By all accounts Sir Alex Ferguson was no superstar on the pitch, but his record as a Manager is unrivalled in modern times.

Back to the star Sales person who has been promoted to Sales Manager. Maybe he or she has great management skills and the company they are working for provide great management training, but they will be among the lucky ones, as will the staff that work for them. In this example, Leaders promote their top Sales person to a Management role with little formal training and expect them succeed. They then fire them because the sales force is de – motivated and under performing due to the lack of management expertise leading them and the Leaders are angry at the lost revenue stream caused by them having promoted the person who generated it. All of this pails in to insignificance when compared to the impact on the self-esteem of the new Manager who is lacking support, direction, achievement and understanding simply from being promoted in to a job that they weren’t equipped for.

In order that we can develop great Managers and Leaders and give UK plc the platform it needs to compete in the new world order, we need to give people a greater understanding of the leadership and management role and the skills you will require to be successful. We need to identify management and leadership potential at a very early stage in the individuals employment with an organisation. This requires significant investment in research to understand what characteristics truly work in Management (undeniably it varies between organisations).

Employees need absolute clarity of understanding as to what they need to achieve in order to move in to a Management role. Employers need to ensure that such objectives are entirely aligned to the strategic objectives of the business. However if the investment in gaining that detailed understanding of the strengths of your people is not made, then the cost implications are enormous. We need to invest in understanding our people far more, develop far greater rigour in our selection processes and be brave enough to pick out management talent from the crowd if we really want to deliver great managers and leaders.

our family watches survival/survivor “השרדות” avidly.

realities are good for all ages and all levels of interest.

my 4 year old, Tal, is facinated if she knows/recoginizes the names of contenstens and something about them or their character.

what i like, is the family discussion about the characters and the plots contirved in the social dynamics.

this season of the Israeli Survivor is wonderful. the characters are fun, especially after Ziv is out.

and there is plenty of room for surprises as there is no Trinity or Iron Axis.

therefore, IMNSHO, in my (not so humble) opinion, now is a great time to starting a contest for guesses about who the final 3 contestants will be.

if you agree that now is a great time to make the guess, please read on.

i doubt that i will be able to guess, but it would be fun to try.

my initial Key is that a strong threesome can make it to the final.

why?

a bit of backwards induction.

the final 3 can be an alliance of 3 out of the final 5.

the final 5 can be a dominant alliance of 8. (not 9 because of veto)

so, a strong 3 (with 2 others) can dominate a tribal counsel of 8 even without the powerful Veto power.

since that 3 with 2 others can make it to the final 5, IF (and this is a big IF), they keep their alliance they are in the final.

note there is some game theory involved. human emotions. psychological scratches. behavioralism. this is fun (and very hard to predict).

note that at this point, the fibonacci series is highly significant, and 2,3,5,8 are dominant numbers to some degree on how alliances can unfold.

this final 3, especially in order to survive the final 5, is composed of a strategist, a capable person (usually wins a hasinot/immunity – not just for physical abilities), and a cute person who tags along (this rule is an attempt to find order in chous and i do not think it will hold water over time).

dan mano, naama, noam,

arik, nata-li (atam meshaker, meshaker), and mirit.

talco, shai, and liad?

i have a lot of doubt about this, but think it would be fun to discuss. if there are enough comments, i will try and introduce other theories

Not sure if a show is right for you? Knowing the right questions to ask of your trade show organizer can mean the difference between an exhibiting boom or a trade show bust.

Safety and Security – After hours, high value items (and lesser value items) seem to grow legs. Ask the organizer if security guards are on site. If that’s not enough, ask about renting a lockable container or bring your own.

Check the schedule – Workshops and speakers are great for bringing in the masses, but if the masses don’t have time to walk the show between presentations there isn’t much sense to exhibiting there. Ask the organizer for a schedule of events and be certain there is enough time for people to visit your booth.

Be heard – Is there an opportunity to speak at the event? If so, sign up! Take every opportunity to make yourself the expert on the subjects you know best. Save the sales pitch though, or you may leave a less than favorable impression on your audience.

Making a marketing effort – It takes more than just building it for people to come. How is the organizer promoting the show? Are they sending out press releases? Direct mailings? See if you can drive a little more attendance from those you want to see by using show provided invitations, if available.

The numbers don’t lie… or do they? – Show organizers love to make their attendance look great. But you need to know how many of those attendees can be expected within your target market. Ask the show organizer if their statistics are certified by an independent audit. It should detail the demographics of the attendees (job titles, industry, where they hail from, etc.) and help you make an educated decision on whether or not the show is for your company.

If you’re still unsure about the show, don’t forget the value of walking the show yourself. Conduct your own survey; ask exhibitors how attendance is compared to other years and about the value they get from the show. Most exhibitors will be happy to share that information with you and you’ll get an even more well rounded picture of what results the show could bring for you.

I’m finally reading Leo Babauta’s The Power of Less. I have read, or have on the list to

I’m finally reading Leo Babauta’s The Power of Less. I have read, or have on the list to read, many productivity books. It is a fascination of mine.

The aspect of the problem that I am struggling most with right now is the selection problem.

Leo has been broadcasting a powerful message of simplicity for a while now. I bought his book the moment it was available based upon my experience with Leo’s writing at Zen Habits. I discovered Zen Habits during an exploration of David Allen’s Getting Things Done. That exploration had begun with Merlin Mann’s 43 Folders. Before any of that I had drank the Franklin Covey Kool-Aid.

Each of these attempts to articulate productivity principles have had an impact. My own decision making is informed by aspects of each that have resonated with me. Still, today, one core problem remains for me. That problem is the selection problem.

Which of the many opportunities, tasks, projects, items, emails, websites, phone calls, interruptions and interactions will hold meaning for tomorrow? How does one decide?

Each of the systems gives some guidance on selection. The advice and recommendations in these expressions of possibility are not the issue. The issue lies within me. I have no idea how to rate and rank the possibilities right now.

It is perhaps because I am hard afloat within a personal period of transition. It feels almost as if I have no past. At least no past that doesn’t consist of experience informing today. It feels as if I have almost any future. I stand at a fork. Yet, this fork is not the one I imagine when I read Robert Frost’s words.

I do not see a choice between a well trodden road and another less travelled path. Not at all. I see uncountable possibilities. I see a Mandelbrot Set, fully developed, completely opaque to understanding meaning. I see so many of the possibilities of a universe full of quantum fluctuations.

Perhaps this isn’t a selection problem at all. Perhaps this is an existential problem.

HR standard letters are **** [fill in the word]

I am sure that some time in your life, you have received one of those “potted” rejection letters from an HR department. Years ago, they said, “we regret to inform you . . .” These days they say something like “the applications were of very high quality but on this occasion . . .” Somehow they always manage to be rude.

Do we have to act as if we hate the applicants?

Years ago, when a recruitment department came under my division at Coopers & Lybrand Associates, I would ask our consultants: what has this person done to offend you? And as this is a smallish town, shouldn’t we at least take into account that the people we reject today may be our clients tomorrow?

Shouldn’t we take the trouble to say why we have rejected someone?

I insisted that every letter, every letter, include a least one phrase that gave the specific reason that we had rejected them.

Couldn’t we give people access to reports about them?

In my psychology practice, I took a stronger stand. I insisted that every report was copied to the candidate. They saw exactly the same report as my client. And I would sit down and go through it with them ~ several times if necessary. I have even remarked tests by hand when a candidate disbelieved the results.

Can’t we resolve the worries that students have about our marking?

I have carried out exactly the same policy with first year students in a class of 850 students. If they queried their results, I took themseriously. There is always a first time for a computer to mess up. Students appreciated it and I am sure that reputation for being reasonable reduced requests for manual re-markes.

Managing rejections graciously

Now I am no wordsmith and I am not great at writing charming letters.

If you are, you might like to look at writer, Paulo Coelho’s method of inviting people to his birthday party. He is able to offer 30 invitations or so to his 1 000 000 plus readers. Look at his methods and his charming way of letting people down engagingly. We can learn a lot!

The first thing a person notices about a dress shirt is its color. In a crowded room of suits, your

The first thing a person notices about a dress shirt is its color. In a crowded room of suits, your choice of shirt colors will either help you stand out or blend in; the key here is what are your intentions and do you know how to mix and match your clothing in order to fulfill them. The only way to do this is to gain mastery in understanding 1) what color shades compliment you and 2) how those same colors frame you in your environment. The goal of this article is to help you to begin to understand both.

The Role of your Complexion, Hair, and Eye Color

A man’s complexion, hair color, and eye color are the key indicators he should use when selecting the color of a fabric which will cover his body. Unfortunately, most men make their color decision based on what they have worn in the past, what colors are readily available, and the ever-changing winds of fashion. The result is what you see today, a sea of solid white and blue shirts. The two most important factors in selecting shirt color are a man’s skin tone and hair color. Eye color is a wild-card factor; in the cases where eye color strongly contrasts a man’s complexion and hair color, it can be used to introduce colors that would otherwise have not compliment an individual. It is the relationship between these three factors that determines what contrast category a man falls into: either High, Low, or Medium Contrast

High Contrast Men

Put simply, these are men whose hair color is a stark contrast to their skin tone; black hair with white skin is a perfect example. For high contrast men, the key to looking good is to be able to mimic this color difference in their clothing with the contrast in their facial zone. A dark navy suit with a white shirt and a charcoal suit with an ice blue shirt are two combinations that compliment high contrast men. In general, light colored shirts with dark suits and dark/vibrant ties with light colored suits. Dark shirts with light suits can be accomplished, but pulling this off requires skill. High contrast men are always complimented by strong ties that stand out from the shirt.

Low Contrast Men

As the name suggests, these are men with a muted appearance. Light hair and light skin is the most common variant, but men with red hair, bald men, and men with little hair also fall into this category. The strengths of these men are the exact opposite of the high contrast men above. Low contrast men should seek a monochromatic look, as that a strong contrasting outfit will easily overpower their muted tones. Remember the purpose of a frame (your clothing) is to enhance the picture (your face). In general, low contrast men fair well with dark blues and earth tone dress shirts combined with dark suits. When wearing light gray or tan suits, the low contrast gentlemen needs to stay with lighter colored shirts and earth tones; white is permissible here if the suit is light enough to avoid a stark contrast. Be careful in your choice of tie, if the neck-wear stands out too much it can draw attention from your face to your chest and stomach.

Medium Contrast Men

If you don’t fall into one of the two extremes, you most likely fit into this group. Brown skinned men with dark hair are common members, along with lighter skinned men and with gray and white hair. With such a wide selection of facial tones and hair colors, it’s hard to give specific guidance in this category. What we will say is that most men do not fit exactly in the middle; instead they lean towards either low or high contrast. The afore mentioned dark haired men with brown skin; they lean towards the high contrast, and can not only utilize that man’s color combinations but they can get away with a few subtle monochromatic combinations. The same with the light skinned gentlemen with gray hair. He is more similar to the low contrast individual, and would do well to follow the rules set forth for that man. However, he can very successfully pull off a contrasting outfit, especially if his eyes or another feature compliment the color combination chosen. To sum it up, medium contrast men can enjoy the best of both worlds, but should be careful when venturing too far in one direction.

The Role of Seasons

It should be mentioned that although your natural colors are the dominant factors in determining what color clothing you should wear, they are not the only things you should pay attention to. A dandy also gives attention to the seasons, paying heed to the effect the colors around him have on the ensemble he has put together. The dark suit and dark colored shirt you decide to wear may look magnificent on you, but at a summer wedding you’ll find yourself not only hot under the collar but sticking out like a sore thumb. Let’s take a quick look at the seasons and the shades of color they invoke.

Spring

The season of re-birth, it’s here that we pinks, lavenders, and lighter shades of blue. Lighter weight fabrics are dusted off from their winter sleep, and a man would speak well of himself to wear multi-colored checks and stripes that compliment him.

Summer

A time when light and bold colors dominate the scene. Gold striped shirts, red checks, and of course a wide variety of blue solids and patterns should grace the wardrobe of the well dressed man. 100% cottons, linens, and silks are popular fabric choices because of their wicking qualities.

Fall

Earth Tones and heavier fabrics begin to make their appearance. Clothing tends to take on a somber appearance with the onset of cooler weather, and now with the weather getting cooler is a good time to wear blends. Their heat retention qualities are good on an cold evening you are caught without an overcoat.

Winter

Dark colors and heavy fabric such as flannels make their appearance. You can enliven your wardrobe a bit with a pink or maize oxford, but winter is the season you want to get your money’s worth from the fabrics designed to keep you warm. Forest green and brown tones are a stable during this season.

It’s important to remember that confidence in ones appearance is vital to looking great. When people look at you a tad longer than usual, you need to have the confidence in your outfit to know that it’s because you look that good (as opposed to looking that bad!). Our advice is to have the courage to know yourself, and from that knowledge choose the colors that best compliments you as an individual.

Our advice is to have the courage to know yourself, and from that knowledge choose the colors that best compliments you as an individual.

textbox_txt.onRelease = function(){

//…

}

ต่อมาก็เขียนให้ select all ใน textbox ด้วยคลาส Selection

textbox_txt.onRelease = function(){

Selection.setFocus(“textbox_txt“);//กำหนดว่าจะให้ select object ไหน ส่งค่า TextInput เข้าไป

Selection.setSelection(0,textbox_txt.length);//กำหนดตำแหน่ง เริ่มต้นและสิ้นสุดของการ Select

}

NB: links used in this blog post are exclusively of Swedish origin and language, and are used only as references; they do not contain any important information needed to understand this blog post.

This information, which was brought to my attention by the Swedish news program Aktuellt, fills me with a great sense of poignant despair, mostly since I myself am a coach for a youth American football team. In my team we wouldn’t even dream of doing something like that, even if we could (we don’t have enough players to be able to be selective). We base our philosophy on two very important principles:

The kids must have fun; if they don’t have fun every single practice, we’re doing something wrong.

We should also strive to educate our players; not only in the sport itself but also in a wider context, as human beings, including a lot of responsibility and leadership, empathy, and morals.

Besides from this, we of course try to win games; there’s no sense in competing if you’re not doing your best to win; however, pursuit of winning must never precede the two principles established earlier. All the players will have a starting position (if not too many players, of course, then we’ll just cycle in-game), and no player must ever feel left out of the game. If we get a kid that wants to play, that kid is going to play, end of story, regardless of his athletic ability; though we of course can’t put a player in a situation where he doesn’t know what he’s going to do and most likely will end up hurt.

That problem can be easily solved by making sure, at practice, that every single kid knows a position and is capable of playing that position without putting him or anyone else at a great risk of injury. It is not even remotely impossible; not even hard to do, as long as you are willing to accept that the chances of putting the most points on the scoreboard (which in my book is not identical to winning; there are a lot of ways to win) are decreased. And this you must do, and you must remember that the kids are there to have fun; who will ever think back at winning a peewee game when they were 11 and going “Yeah, that was so awesome that we won that game”? No one. Instead it is more likely, and I know this from personal experience from my own peewee days, that they’ll go “Yeah, that was so much fun we had there, do you remember when ‘this and that happened’? Can’t remember what the score was though.”

However, there is, sadly, a widespread use of selecting the ‘best’ 9, 10, 11, or 12-year old boys to an elite team inside Swedish soccer organisations, all in the pursuit of excellence and winning a championship; for kids. And small kids are told “You are not good enough”, and not let into the team. Other small kids are told “You need to practice harder – it’s not supposed to be fun.” Imagine the stress this puts on the child – he must always perform at his absolute best to even be kept in the team. Is it even legal to put small children under such extreme pressure?

In fact, all this goes against the recommendations stated by the organisation responsible for all sports-related events in Sweden, Riksidrottsförbundet; the problem is that its just recommendations, not anything that can be forced upon the sports club, so basically the clubs can keep doing it without anyone to stop them. The policy my own team applies completely correlates with RF’s policy, found here.

Lets revisit why the elitist thinking is bad. One reason is that there has been a study showing that no individual can be determined if he/she is going to be any good in any sport, until that individual is at least 17 years of age (I am now rather annoyed that I can’t find this research, but it’s there – you’ll have to trust me). In fact, if you ask many of today’s top athletes when they started practicing their sport, many of them would probably give you the answer that they did it when they were somewhere around 16, 17, or 18 years old. There is actually one Swedish runner who now competes at elite level, who had never practiced running until she was 18. So the argument that it would produce better athletes for the future is pretty much an illusion.

And again – the pressure this puts on the kids. I can’t stress this point enough; it is simply not OK to force a young boy into an elitist thinking where he must perform at his very best at every single practice or else he’ll get kicked out. And remember all those kids who are not allowed into the elite section, while, perhaps, their friends are. To act like a psychologist: “How does that make them feel?” I’m guessing bad. Very bad, resulting in low self-esteem and with that the doors to a variety of different problems open up. What happens when you take out your frustration on not making the team by bullying some kid in school? Then we suddenly have a major societal issue, all caused by elitist thinking in a sports club. And that, I think we can all agree, is not very good.

I think the very existence of this elitist thinking for youth sports clubs is appalling, and it must be stopped immediately, lest we have a bunch of kids breaking down into nervous wrecks, or kids who see life as a competition where one must win, always, and that failure is not an option. Are these the sort of people we want in our society? Ruthless, competitive machines who must always maximise efficiency and ‘win’? Or do we want caring, empathetic people who can actually benefit the society; people who we would love to have as our neighbours? It’s up to us.

I am asked ALL the time if I have access to programs that would show a client an interior or exterior paint color before they commit. Until recently, the only option was to get out the ol’ color pencils and their house drawings and show them an approximation of what their paint colors will look like on their home. No more!

Sherwin Williams just upgraded the Color Visualization tool to include the option to upload your own photos! What’s more, you can decide which surfaces you wish to “paint” and leave the rest as-is. So, if you want a new wall color and a new ceiling color, but you wish to leave your trim the color it is now, you can select the areas you wish, and choose a color for each of them. It’s really fun to play around with! You can then save your photos and paint scenarios for future reference. While Benjamin Moore also offers this service, their tool comes with a small fee. There is no charge for the Sherwin Williams tool.

You’ll find the tool here; give it a try and leave a comment for me. I would love to know what you think!

And, don’t forget Sherwin Williams FREE Colorsnap iPhone application; you can snap a photo of any color, and this app will match it to a Sherwin Williams color! What a handy tool – now you can be inspired anywhere and anytime, and find a way to match the colors you love.
