Top Bun… I watched the All-Star game the other day, and needless to say, I was a little disapp

Top Bun…

I watched the All-Star game the other day, and needless to say, I was a little disappointed. Tim Wakefield, the 42 year old first-time All-Star, one of the classiest guys in baseball, never got in the game. Unlike this guy, I got over it. I’m a huge Red Sox fan, I’ll readily admit, but the guy who wrote that “article” has no sense of perspective. He actually went so far as to call Joe Maddon the worst All-Star manager ever. He thinks Wakefield not pitching in the game was some kind of snub against him and the Red Sox. Talk about blowing it out of proportion.

Look, I’ll admit, Maddon’s moves certainly had a tinge of favoritism in his “manager’s picks”. I mean, who did Ian Kinsler have to blow to get on the team? Oh, Pedroia backed out of the game? Great, now Maddon can add a fourth 1st baseman, Carlos Pena (in addition to Mark Teixeira, Kevin Youkilis, and Justin Morneau), instead of replacing the position with the guy who was the runner-up in voting. Not exactly balanced, but, like Bobby Brown, that’s his prerogative.

Now, to suggest that Maddon somehow “had it in” for Wakefield and the Red Sox (further evidence by Beckett not pitching) is absurd. Even as a huge Red Sox and Tim Wakefield fan, even I knew he would only get in the game in three situations. Wake would pitch if the AL was up huge, if the NL was up huge, or if the game went deep into extras. The simple fact is that Wakefield doesn’t have the shut-down ability that the majority of the other pitchers have. He’s not overpowering, he’s crafty. He’s a wily veteran, but he’s no Roidger Clemens. That said, the tone was set pretty early that it would be a dogfight, and the last thing you want to do in a close game is throw out your rubber-armed knuckleballer to whip out his 60 mph knuckler or his 75 mph heater.

The point is, I didn’t mind Wake not getting in, and something tells me Wake didn’t mind at all, either. It was all about the experience, and odd though it may be to say this about a 42 year-old, he’ll have other chances.

Meaty Center…

So, I just read that Ryan Reynolds is going to be the Green Lantern. Don’t get me wrong, I like Ryan Reynolds, but at this point, he’s been Hannibal King in Blade 3, Deadpool in Wolverine (and his own upcoming movie), and now he’s added Green Lantern to his repertoire. On top of that, he was rumored to be The Flash when they were working on making that. I’m aware that Green Lantern and the Flash are DC while Deadpool and Hannibal King are Marvel, but still. Does the guy get non-comic book movie gigs anymore? I don’t think he does. Sure, you’ll point out “The Proposal”, but I’m pretty sure at this point that even it was based on some obscure graphic novel.

Strangely, Ryan’s wife, Scarlett Johansson, seems to have the same problem. Ghost World, The Spirit, and now Iron Man 2. Their kids are gonna come out shitting comic books…while starring in comic book movies.

Speaking of comic book movies, when did they become actual works of art? I mean, Kenneth Branagh is directing the upcoming Thor movie. Kenneth Branagh! He made a four hour fucking epic out of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and he thinks Thor will be a worthy follow-up? I’m honestly impressed and think it’s about time comic books got their due. But where did it start? When did directors start looking at comic books as legitimate movies, rather than summer popcorn movies? Did Tim Burton’s Batman movies start it? Sam Raimi’s Spiderman? I don’t think so. Burton’s Batman movies were entirely too campy (and nowhere near the caliber of current-gen Batman made by Christopher Nolan), and Sam Raimi wasn’t exactly known as a great artist, despite his enjoyable movies. Personally, I think the seismic shift came when Ang Lee made Hulk. Bad movie though it may have been, for someone with the reputation of Ang Lee to decide to make a comic book movie I think went a long way towards changing the perception of comics. Who do you think it was?

Bottom Bun…

Can you believe that some people were completely upset with President Obama for wearing a White Sox jacket to throw out the first pitch at the All Star game? Seriously. They were. It was on the front page of stltoday.com at one point. Why were they upset? Largely because, according to them, his wearing a White Sox jacket, in St. Louis, was an affront to Stan Musial. They whole first pitch ceremony was supposed to be a celebration of ‘Baseball in St. Louis’ and Obama’s jacket stole the city’s thunder. Personally, I think it’s a combination of St. Louis’ perpetual inferiority complex with Chicago and people just looking for reasons not o like Obama. The All-Star game and the first pitch were not supposed to be a celebration of ‘Baseball in St. Louis’, they were supposed to be a celebration of baseball…in St. Louis. You know what the actual ‘Celebration of Baseball in St. Louis’ is? From Opening Day to the end of the season. One day isn’t going to hurt the city any.

Maybe, in order to not offend people’s delicate sensibilities, they should have had all the players wear Cardinals jerseys instead of their actual jerseys. Now, while seeing Roy Halladay in a Cardinal jersey might have provided a glimpse into the dreams of some Cardinal fans, that’s hardly a good enough reason. Let’s contrast Obama’s situation to that of Senator Clinton. In 2007, at a Democratic debate at Dartmouth, when the Cubs and Yankess might have been playing in the World Series, she said if it happened she’d root for the Yankees in New York and the Cubs in Chicago That’s political bullshit. A White Sox fan having the balls to wear a White Sox jacket in St. Louis should make us glad that regardless of his policies, the President is a legitimate baseball fan before a politician, much like our former President was.

(New York, NY)

On Thursday October 2, 2008 New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that he was interested in seeking a third term as Mayor of New York City. The biggest question lately is what party would Mayor Bloomberg run as? Would he seek another term as a Republican, would he run as an Independent, would he create a new party, would he run as a Democrat or would he run on all lines.

It has been reported that at a press conference at City Hall today a reporter asked the Mayor about the trend that he has been trying to associate himself lately with important leaders in the Democratic Party. The reporter noted that the Mayor was set to appear on New Year’s Eve with President Clinton and Senator Clinton. Bloomberg said “I don’t know that my links to the Democrats are growing any more than my links to Republicans, who are not growing, depending on who you ask.”

We would like to hear what you think about Mayor Bloombergs re-election bid and what party you think he should as. Maybe Mayor Bloomberg should not run at all. That would certainly solve all of our problems.

Washington—In honor of President-elect Barack Obama, D-IL, the White House will host a non offensive

Washington—In honor of President-elect Barack Obama, D-IL, the White House will host a non offensive Christmas, a delight that’s sure to warm the heart of even the fondest of atheists.

The decision reportedly came with America in the icy grip of the Obama recession. This drove the final nail in the coffin, ending the hopes of a bright, White House Christmas. This year, according to Laura Bush, things are going to be different.

“This just hasn’t been the most wonderful time of the year,” said First Lady Laura Bush. “So, we’re going to essentially skip Christmas for a whole new season. The new theme is going to be ‘Battleship Gray.’ We just can’t afford to offend anyone this time of the year. Many advocates have supported representing all religions, but that would only offend people that don’t subscribe to a certain religion, and we can’t have that either.

Besides, winter is all about gray, bleak days, and the only thing bleaker than a battleship parked offshore is an oil rig. We were going to do a ‘Red, White and Blue” Christmas, but far too many people are struggling. There just isn’t a better time to change themes.”

The first steps have begun, according to Mrs. Bush, sending all green trees back to the factory to be flocked in gray and renamed Winter Solstice Trees. The feeling is that a tree flocked in white would be far too offensive to minorities. The decorations will consist of round, plastic bulbs, we’re told, so as not to be harmful to children in any way, and too large to be swallowed. No lights will be put on the trees. Instead, the trees will be strung with gray twine, knotted together to show the harmony of peace.

More decorations are said to include plastic ornaments in the shapes of parallelograms, decagons and dodecagons, all with the edges trimmed so as not to be too aggressive. The top of the trees are to be adorned with a reshaped star that is not representative of any religion, and repainted gray to fit the theme.

“You can’t say enough about this,” claimed Mrs. Bush. “Seeing the White House all decked out in gray sends chills down my spine.”

Not to be outdone, the White House has changed its Christmas parties to winter celebration parties. The hors d’oeuvres served at each party will be vanilla wafers and rice cakes. The cocktails are mentioned as being downgraded from punch—which has been known to be fattening—to bottled water and Tab.

The sudden move to a change in Christmas themes has left many pundits confused and many pundits happy. “You’ve got to hand it to Mrs. Bush,” stated Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY. “This is a bold move that’s long overdue for this administration. I think this is a tradition all Americans can follow.”

“I think I just want a bottle,” said Sen. Ted Kennedy. “But as long as we keep Christ…I mean religion out of Christmas, we can all have a great Winter Solstice.”

“I think it’s a bit much,” noted Sen. John McCain, R-AZ. “But you really can’t blame Mrs. Bush for reaching out to Middle America. This should’ve been in honor of me. Screwed by conservatives again. I hope they rot in hell.”

As the advent of the Christmas season begins, political correctness fills the air. The gloomy forecast that hangs over the White House has forced them to make a change in the once, great traditions of Christmas. As the workers go to work, the White House is filled with excitement about what is sure to be a hit in Washington and in the nation with the first non offensive Christmas.

“I can’t believe Mrs. Bush is doing this,” fired Pat Robertson. “She knows that Christmas is about the birth of Christ. This is ridiculous. And she calls herself a Methodist. She’s going to burn I tell ya.”

One issue we voters have forgotten about already is it was okay to cheat in the elections of 2008 in

One issue we voters have forgotten about already is it was okay to cheat in the elections of 2008 in any way possible. The faux president elect, The One, The Obamessiah did it all. He cheated through thuggery, outright intimidation, and name calling throughout 2008. He was aided by the likes of the various state Democratic Parties, the Reid, Pelosi and Democratic congressional cabal and of course ACORN.

Speaking of ACORN, what has happened to all the “investigations? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. The embezzlement case hasn’t even gone very, remaining embroiled in a bitter fight in court.

The midterm elections are in two years. We will start seeing campaign activities in the next year and they will be brutal. Why? Because the politicians running for these seats know that it is okay to cheat.

They know it is okay to cheat in elections because the president-elect, The One “leads” by example.

If you think that elections will get better from here on out, you are delusional. There will be no change, only chaos in future elections. There will be rampant cheating beating the record in the 2008 elections because The One says it is “okay”, I did and now I am living in government housing, Our White House!

So “we the voters” need to be reminded that election reform including primary and caucus reform. Caucuses must go away. It only encourages cheating as The One showed us in so many states. Some of his infractions include busing illegal voters to other states like Iowa, busing illegal voters to different precincts within states and allowing underage high school students to “sign” up to vote even though would not be “18″ by November.

There should no longer be one state favored over another when it comes to who votes first. But much of this reform will require reform within the Democratic Party because they set these arbitrary dates and give amnesty for setting the primary early to different states on a whim.

Here is a video clip of the cheating in the primaries so we remember and never forget. We must unite as one under the name Jeffersonian Coalition and take back out rights as voters and citizens of the United States.

Marie Cocco wrote an interesting piece yesterday, titled “The Glass Ceiling Holds Strong

Marie Cocco wrote an interesting piece yesterday, titled “The Glass Ceiling Holds Strong” and her premise correct. I was recently introduced to Christal Phillips, she had something to add to Marie’s post. Here it is:

In her op-ed, The Glass Ceiling Holds Strong, Marie Cocco of The Washington Post rightly tells women to stop kidding ourselves. The glass ceiling remains uncracked and possibly even thicker than ever before because male candidates now know that they can use misogyny to the extreme and get away with it without even a blink of an eye from the media or even feminist groups. We need to stop believing that there are “18 million cracks” in the glass ceiling. I see it more as 18 million voices – many of them women and Americans within the lower income bracket – stifled and disenfranchised by the DNC and the media. It can also be said that powerful women such as Nancy Pelosi and Arianna Huffington continue to pander to male opinions without giving other women the chance to be heard.

Here is the entire text of the piece:

WASHINGTON — It is time to stop kidding ourselves. This wasn’t a breakthrough year for American women in politics. It was a brutal one.

The glass ceiling remains firmly in place — not cracked, as Hillary Clinton insisted as she tried to claim rhetorical victory after her defeat in the Democratic nominating contest. It wasn’t even scratched with the candidacy of Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee — unless you consider becoming an object of national ridicule to be a symbol of advancement. As divergent as these two women are ideologically and temperamentally, as different as are their resumes, they both banged their heads — hard — against the ceiling. Both were bruised. So was the goal of advancing women in political leadership.

Even if President-elect Barack Obama chooses Clinton as secretary of state, no ground will be broken. Clinton would be the third woman to hold the post. And there is no longer anything extraordinary in a president naming women to his Cabinet. Franklin D. Roosevelt did it first, when he appointed Frances Perkins as labor secretary in 1933. Since then, every president but Harry Truman and John F. Kennedy has named women to the Cabinet or to Cabinet-level posts, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. Bill Clinton holds the record: He appointed 16 women overall, and at one point about half of those serving in Clinton’s Cabinet were female.

But, we are invariably told, surely there are enough women moving through the “pipeline” of lower offices so that someday, some woman from somewhere will win the presidency or the vice presidency. Well, here is how things stand: Eight women will serve as governors in 2009, the same as this year. The proportion of women serving in statewide elective office actually has dropped since it reached a high of about 28 percent in 2000; it is now about 24 percent, according to the center.

The Senate will add one woman next year, bringing the number of female senators to 17. Ten newly elected House members are female. This means that as the class of 2008 enters the Capitol’s marble halls, it will include less than half the number of women who first won office in 1992 — the so-called “year of the woman.”

Including incumbents and newcomers, a record number of women will be serving in Congress, but still only 17 percent of its members will be female. This is where that record places us: on a par with the legislative representation women have achieved in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. The United Nations, which tracks women’s global political advancement, says that at this rate, it will take women in the developing world 40 years to reach parity with men.

How long will it take us? We already are well into the fourth decade since the contemporary women’s movement of the 1970s spawned a generation that sought to claim an equal place in the halls of power.

Those who watched the media’s sexist hazing of both Clinton and Palin often rationalize this treatment as the result of these two candidates’ particular personalities and the legitimacy — or presumed illegitimacy — of their campaigns. But Barbara Lee, whose Boston-based family foundation has conducted extensive research of gubernatorial races involving women, routinely identifies the same undercurrents in state campaigns. Voters demand more experience of a woman candidate, and judge her competence separately from whether she is sufficiently “likable.” Male candidates typically must clear only the competence bar to be judged — as Obama indelicately put it during a primary debate — “likable enough.”

“We heard that over and over again — that no woman is ever right,” Lee says of her focus groups. “They like the concept of it but when it comes to a real, live, breathing candidate, they don’t.”

Lee summarizes the disparate assessment this way: “There are no female Arnold Schwarzeneggers.” That is, no woman will ever burst into politics, capture the voters’ imagination and be catapulted into high public office without a lick of experience.

Yet American women are a majority of the population and a majority of the electorate. They earn more than half the bachelor’s and master’s degrees, a level of educational achievement far exceeding that of women in developing countries. There must be some reason we don’t do any better than women in impoverished, rural regions of the world where cultural norms oppress women.

Maybe it is because our culture isn’t so different after all.

Marie Cocco is correct, our culture is no different than other cultures. Women are still considered second class citizens in the USA. The sad thing it is mostly women who treat us this way. Women are their own worst enemies.

I had an interesting conversation here in Kansas with one woman who said I vote the way my husband tells me to! And this is just a small part of the problem.

I recently became aware of this group, Grassfire.Org. It is a conservative force which is building a grassroots movement to counter the Obama leftist regime. I wholeheartedly support their efforts because things are already out of control in the Obama cabal. He is filling the White House with former Clintonistas, many of them with the same leftist regime in mind.

The Socialistic policies they espouse are not doing anything positive for this country. We had 50% or more than 600,000 more hungry children in 2007, with that number expected to rise dramatically by year’s end. These hungry children are not being helped by the bailout. Amd they are not likely to be helped by any policies put forth by Obama’s new policies.

I think Grassfire.org is the wave of the future. They have amassed more than 100,000 members to date. I sent out e-mails to all my contacts so they can have a part in taking back our country. Here is the e-mail I received from the movement:

+ + Obama Resistance Update
Grassfire.org

Nancy,

In the 72 hours since you’ve joined Grassfire’s “Resistance”
against Barack Obama and his leftist agenda, fantastic things
are happening!

Already, more than 147,803 freedom-filled citizens have
responded to the call, with thousands more joining the Resistance
every hour-and it couldn’t happen fast enough.

Nancy, we’ve learned that Obama has already set an
extremely aggressive agenda immediately upon taking office that
includes shutting down oil and gas exploration, advancing radical
global warming policies, and further expansion of the federal
government!

++ Personal Action Is Paramount

If we are to succeed at arresting Obama’s radical plans for our
nation, it is imperative that citizens take immediate action in
helping us build a mighty coalition of at least ONE MILLION
grassroots resistors!

Simply stated, I’m calling on you, Nancy to help me reach 100
citizens with our “Resistance” message.

That’s right. I need you to help me rally 100 citizens to our cause
by forwarding this and other critical updates to your friends,
family, co-workers, urging them to take IMMEDIATE ACTION by clicking here:

http://www.grassfire.net/r.asp?u=13299&PID=18811338

Because time is so critical, it’s simply not enough to just forward
a message or two of your friends. Nancy, we are talking about
our nation, the loss of our rights and freedoms, and a radical socialist
agenda that may take generations to recover from…

I need you to take action right now!

I need your to literally talk your friends through the petition
signing process. If you have to, stand over their shoulder until
the process is complete!

Yes, it is that important, and I’m counting on you to take full advantage
of the time remaining until Inauguration Day (Jan. 20) by leading an
additional 100 citizens or more to The Resistance!

Thank you for your commitment to our cause!

Steve Elliott, President
Grassfire.org

I wasn’t sure if I would write about this because her acceptance of the SOS position is abomin

I wasn’t sure if I would write about this because her acceptance of the SOS position is abominable. I’m certain she will be a good SOS but doing Obama’s bidding, and that won’t be good. Will Hillary meet unconditionally with the Castro Brothers? Or maybe it will be Adminjehad? Or how about Medvedev and Putin? Or even Chavez? She will not be able to set her own agenda, it will be The One’s agenda. Remember Hillary’s word about The One’s thin resume.

Hillary lost me with the rumor she is taking the job. Her acceptance is nothing more than acquiescence to The One. And with that I have lost all respect for Hillary. I always thought she was her own woman. She is not. She is willing to fall in line with The One and “thumb her nose” at all her supporters. And Hillary seems all too willing to make her name internationally on the back of a man’s administration. She has left this feminist behind.

I am sorry but Hillary is proving she is nothing more than a politician who cares nothing for her supporters. Hillary’s failed presidential bid did not crack any glass ceiling I have seen lately. Everyone I have looked up at is totally intact. Her words are just that and nothing more. I even have to wonder if there was any sincerity in her words at all. I heard her words in Dallas and Billings, MT.

Hillary’s “mandated universal health care” plan is taking shape. Some of the healthcare trade companies are now discussing universal health care. Where is Hillary? Hillary is running as far away as she can … to do The One’s bidding. Could it be Hillary isn’t willing to face her last dismal try at universal healthcare? Could it be she is a coward and afraid she may fail again?

I don’t know what Hillary’s reason is for accepting the job as SOS. And frankly at this point in time I don’t care. I just know this, taking the job tells me she doesn’t really care about people, only about her own future. Those 18 million people that voted for her have now been thrown under the bus. Thanks a lot Hillary!

There is only one bright spot in this spectacle, the Obots heads are going to explode. There isn’t a Whole Foods bot that doesn’t suffer from Clinton Derangement Syndrome. Must be an epidemic or something. Sorry no cure! We non-Whole Food types can have a big chuckle at those arugula eating, latte drinking Whole Food types expense. The One is throwing them under the bus. I wonder how that’s setting with the Whole Food types.

I am not the only having a good laugh at their expense. Here is an excerpt from Liberal Rapture:

A few times in the past 4 months I’ve stated that the Obama Pods would be the first thrown under the bus by the Dear Leader.

So far. So good.

Hillary will be Secretary of State. This has the Obamamedia and the Obamablog kidz cringing.
Screw ‘em. Their hatred for the Clintons knows no bounds and has no rational underpinning anyway. The deluded have to wake up about Obama eventually. It may as well be now. Obama is reconstructing the Clinton White House – with some Bushies in tow for good measure.

Definitely a Clinton Third Term about to take over this country. While Clinton’s first two terms were good, The One hasn’t got a chance. This is a truism… Wait until the bots are done with him.

More Liberal Rapture (love the irony in this post, not to mention the sarcasm.):

See the incoming CIA chief:
If Brennan emerges as the pick,…will have to oppose him strenuously in the nomination process. We will, in fact, have to go to war with Obama before he even takes office. And if Obama doubts our seriousness, I have three words for him. Yes we can.

That is a quote from the nation’s preeminent hypocrite and barebacker in waiting: Andrew Sullivan. They may have to “go to war” – My God, the inflated self importance still astounds. When the Clinton announcement is formalized by Obama everyone should grab a tarp. Micheal Moore may well explode, raining lard and invective far and wide.

Brennan is a Bushie at heart. A Clinton at State and a Bushie at the C.I.A…

ha.
ha.
ha.

Obama is setting himself up an administration of D.C. insiders. This should surprise no one. The fact that there is much gnashing of teeth in Podville is testimony to the level of delusion and self importance still rampant with Kos and rest of the “Yes We Can” twits.

So far we have Clinton at State, Brennen at the C.I.A., Richardson at Commerce, Daschle at H.U.D., and Rahm the Impaler as White House gatekeeper. Except Brennen – all are Bill Clinton bred insiders. (Brennen is a Cheney/Bush “apologist” according to Sullivan.) Conservative anti-choice Republican Chuck Hagel will show up somewhere on Obama’s roster soon. And Lieberman got the thumbs up from Obama – and therefore the Senate Democratic Caucus – so he can stay. Cue Kos teeth gnashing.

We told the kos kidz Obama was not who he seemed. Maybe Howard Dean will launch an insurgent presidential campaign from the Left in 2012 to give those idiots something to do.

The Whole Foods liberals are being left at the alter – and I am glad to be a witness.

I must agree with LR about the Whole Food Liberals but I disagree about Hillary. The worst thing she has ever done is agree to take the job as SOS. The gnashing of the teeth on both sides will be quite loud.

Health Care reform is being marshaled by two healthcare groups. “In separate actions, the two

Health Care reform is being marshaled by two healthcare groups. “In separate actions, the two trade groups, America’s Health Insurance Plans and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, announced their support for guaranteed coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions, in conjunction with an enforceable mandate for individual coverage”, according to The New York Times (NYT).

The healthcare groups have some requirements so this plan will be allowed to go anywhere. Read the following statement, you will realize it is Hillary Clinton’s plan, not Obama’s plan which only includes insuring children. Read on:

The health insurance industry said Wednesday that it would support a health care overhaul requiring insurers to accept all customers, regardless of illness or disability. But in return, the industry said, Congress should require all Americans to have coverage.

The healthcare insurance industry wants mandates. That means insurance for all people regardless os pre-existing conditions.

Here are excerots from Senator Hillary Clinton’s healthcare plan:

The centerpiece of Clinton’s plan is the so-called “individual mandate,” requiring everyone to have health insurance – just as most states require drivers to purchase auto insurance.

Obama only mandates health insurance for children but not parents. If the parents have no health care and get ill, who is left to care for the “healthy children”?

More from the article:

The new position taken by the insurance industry — the industry that helped sink President Bill Clinton’s plan for universal health coverage in 1994 — could ease the way for passage of such legislation.

But the industry’s position differs from that of Mr. Obama in one significant respect. Insurers want the government to require everyone to have and maintain insurance. By contrast, Mr. Obama would, at least initially, apply the requirement only to children.

In the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, that was a major point of contention between Mr. Obama and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. Mrs. Clinton said that everyone should be required to have coverage. Mr. Obama said he wanted to be certain that insurance was affordable and available to all before considering such a broad requirement.

Asked on Wednesday for reaction to the insurance industry’s proposals, Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the Obama transition team, said, “We are declining comment.” Mr. Vietor cited Mr. Obama’s view that “we have only one president at a time.”

That is right absolutely no response from Obama. And that leads me to a question. Will Obama mandate health care for all or just mandate insurance for children?

More from NYT:

Donald G. Hamm Jr., president of Assurant Health, explained why the industry thought an individual mandate must be coupled with any ban on such underwriting practices.

“In the individual market, people can choose whether or not to apply for coverage,” Mr. Hamm said in an interview. “If they know they can obtain coverage at any time, many will wait until they get sick to apply for it. That increases the price for everyone.”

Insurers say that is just what happened in several states that prohibited insurers from turning down applicants on the basis of their health status.

The new policy statements are silent on two important issues: how to enforce an individual mandate and how to regulate insurance prices, or premiums.

While insurers would be required to sell insurance to any applicant, nothing would guarantee that consumers could afford it. Rate regulation promises to be a highly contentious issue, since it pits the financial interests of insurers against those of consumers.

Problems still remain with the mandates. Who enforces the mandate? How to regulate insurance prices and premiums? And the last of the problems is going to be the biggest obstacle and may be the deal breaker. What kind of premiums will the insurance industry want?

At present, insurance premiums are generally regulated by the states and often vary according to a person’s age, sex, medical history and place of residence within a state. In the individual market in most states, a person with a history of serious or chronic illness can be charged much more than a healthy person of the same age and sex.

Mr. Hamm, a member of the board of America’s Health Insurance Plans, said the group might offer recommendations to define “a fair and appropriate rating structure.”

Alissa Fox, a vice president of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, said the individual mandate was an indispensable corollary of any approach forbidding insurers to reject applicants because of health status.

“Insurance works best when everyone is in the pool,” Ms. Fox said. “You need healthy people in the insurance pool to help pay for sicker individuals who are much more motivated to buy coverage.”

Insurers did not say how the government should enforce an individual mandate: whether through fines, tax penalties or other means. Politicians have also been reluctant to specify details of enforcement, which could prove highly unpopular.

Neither the government nor the insurance industry have a plan or even the outline of a plan. This is in itself a very large problem. The cost of insurance premiums will have to be wrestled from the hands of the states. In Kansas the insurance rates are outrageous for people with pre-existing conditions. For a woman, aged 53, $1000/month and for a 26 year old woman $650, both with pre-existing conditions. Neither can afford those premiums and rely on so-called “free-clinics or income adjusted payments”.

The only answer I see is mandated insurance. I seriously have my doubts about the plan. Why? Because it will be left up to the federal government to track these mandates. And the feds and Congress aren’t too good at overseeing “new programs”.
