John Snow’s DSU update, # 1, ALL ABOUT DSU Durham.Snow.You. is John Snow’s new DSU update in bite-s

John Snow’s DSU update, # 1, ALL ABOUT DSU

Durham.Snow.You. is John Snow’s new DSU update in bite-sized form. You’ll be able to scan through between lectures to find out everything DSU related that affects you!

Hi! I’m Jasmine and I’m a second year Anthropologist. As your Senior DSU Rep I’m really passionate about being a Snow Ranger.

My role is to ensure Snow’s 1000 members have a definite presence in the DSU by representing you all and providing you with info about everything DSU! I’m helped out by my assistant Tommy.

Let’s face it John Snow is the best college, so that’s why our views need to be heard!

So what is DSU?

DSU stands for Durham Students’ Union and is a democratic organisation that you guys are all automatically part of! DSU is not another college or JCR. It’s made up of all the 16 colleges and all students, speaking with a voice to represent you. DSU lobbies and campaigns on issues that concern you as well as much more…

Representation

DSU represents you. Whether it’s an individual or a university-wide issue, DSU is there to support you and make sure that the student voice, your voice, is heard.

Council

DSU has a number of different committees and Council is where they report to. Along with reps from all the other colleges, Council is where they discuss issues that matter to you so that the student population knows what work all the groups are doing. Tommy and I go along to council and make sure Snow is represented there. We’d love for you to join us (and if you let me know you want to come you may even get some cake on the bus!)

Advice

The Advice Centre offers free, independent, confidential and impartial advice on all issues affecting students. Available Monday to Friday, the team can help with finance, academic, personal and employment issues. You can find the number on the back of your campus card.

Societies

DSU have over 150 societies covering a whole range of interests. Whatever you’re passionate about there’s bound to be something for you and if there isn’t why not start your own? That’s what Snow students did last year and the Cocktail Society was born! If you need anymore info about societies you can also speak to Luke, John Snow’s Cultures and Societies Officer. His email is: luke.robbins-ross@durham.ac.uk

Media

Dunelm House (The DSU Building) is home to Palatinate, the student newspaper and Purple Radio. Palatinate is published fortnightly and covers news affecting Durham students both on and off campus. Purple Radio goes live during term time and broadcasts 24 hours a day, playing hit tunes and keeping you up to date on all things Durham University. Want to find out more or get involved? Check out www.palatinate.org.uk or www.purpleradio.co.uk

Entertainment

DSU holds a whole range of events… one that you can’t miss is the DSU Fresher’s Ball. I hope to see all you Snow Rangers there!!

If you have any questions or want to get involved please feel free to get in touch: j.n.rahman@durham.ac.uk
