I paid about £110 for these headphones and I can not find any fault at all regarding sound quality. But WHY, on such an expensive piece of kit, do they have a cheap, easily breakable plastic clip to attach the lead to your person? Needless to say, within a week I was left with a broken piece of plastic and a dangling lead. Even a cheapo set of Creative Labs headphones I bought previously had a metal clip. They were a damn sight more uncomfortable to wear and the sound wasn’t quite as good, but they are still intact! Anyway, that is a slight niggle with an otherwise wonderful piece of audio equipment. They are the most comfortable set of ‘phones I have ever worn. Solidly built (apart from the clip) and able to fit the largest of heads! Again, the sound quality from both the speakers and the microphone is second to none. If Amazon’s rating system would allow half-stars, these would have got 4.5.

Working in a noisy environment can be stressful. At my working space there’s a lot of chatter

Working in a noisy environment can be stressful. At my working space there’s a lot of chatter on the phone, cars passing by and furniture being moved around. So for me, ideal timing to start the search for a Noise Cancelling (NC) headphones.

Noise cancelling headphones are by definition designed for use on airplanes. They filter out the low-end part of the frequency spectrum that the engines on a plan produce. But do these headphones also work in a noisy work environment? Read on.

The main competitors for the PCX 450 are the Bose QuietComfort 3 and the Beats by Dr. Dre. All three are in the high price range, so keep an eye on your wallet while shopping. A good Dutch review of the Beats by Dr. Dre can be found here: http://www.unexpected.be/?p=2367

Sound quality

You can choose to listen with or without noise cancelling activated. I find listening to music with the function disabled a dull experience. High tones sound somewhat muffled and bass sounds flat. A bit like listening to a low-bitrate mp3 track.
But if you activate the noise cancelling the high notes sound precise and the bass is descent. So I personally always listen with NC activated.

In my workplace it works very well. It really makes working more relaxing. The environmental sounds are much less direct.
More like all the noise comes from 2 rooms away.

I’ve also tested the headset on a plane, where it should perform at its best. The experience was less shocking then expected. But the trip (Brussels – Rome) was made to look like 30 minutes with the headset. A lot of the engine sound was gone, but is was still clearly present.

One word of warning: NC gives you warmer, more precise sound but also a slight ‘hiss’ in the headphones. This is an effect from which all noise cancelling headphones suffer (the Bose, and the Beats inclusive). In my experience you will hear this ‘hiss’ mostly while listening to classical music or during silences in general. That is if your ears are not blown to bits by clubbing.

Build quality and comfort

As you can see in the second picture, the build quality is very descent. The earcups neatly fold around your ears and are covered in very soft leather-like fabric. Hinges are made from steel, not plastic and the headphones rests relaxing on your head.
If you should have glasses like me, the headphones could get uncomfortable after some hours of listening.

Some reviews say the headphones are extremely heavy. I disagree. Yes it has more weight to it. But in this case weight = quality.
I go running with this headset and it stays on very nicely.

Practical things

The headphones use 1 AAA battery for the noise cancelling. This gives you about 15-20 hours of music. It also has the ability to function without battery and thus without noise cancelling.

Accesoires:

transport case (you can fold your headphones)

2 audio adaptors (in-flight entertainment and 6.3 mm)

2 AAA batteries

Detachable cable (if you want NC without music)

Buttons:

Volume +/- buttons to increase and decrease the music volume

‘Talk Through’ button. This button stops your music, and amplifies the voices in the area. This way you can talk to colleagues or aircraft personnel.

Cons:

‘Hiss’ when noise cancelling is activated

Price

Average sound quality when listening without noice cancelling

On July 2nd, 2009, 4000 US Marines of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade launched a major helicopter assault into an insurgent stronghold in the Helmand River Valley in southern Afghanistan to break a military stalemate that had been reached with the Taliban.

The footage was shot on a custom built rig, using a Canon 5D Mark II, 24-70 f/2.8 L lens, Sennheiser ME-66 and G2 wireless system, Singh-Ray variable ND filter, and Beachtek 2XAs mounted on a Glidecam 2000 HD with custom made aluminum ‘wings.’

Independent filmmaker Danfung Dennis was embedded with Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Company, as they were dropped 18km behind enemy lines to seize a key bridge. Within a few hours of landing, fierce fighting erupts and continues for the next three days, in which Lance Corporal Charles Sharp, from Adairsville, Georgia was was shot and killed by a Taliban fighter.

After the initial fighting, the Marines search for the insurgents that killed Lance Corporal Sharp. Frustration sets in as the Marines try to fight a ghost like enemy and IED’s cut them off from resupply. The Marines objective is to secure and protect the population, but the Afghan villagers complain that the fighting has driven them into desert, bombing has destroyed their homes, and intrusive raids disrespect their culture. Trying to balance their roles between warriors and statesmen, the Marines struggle to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people.

Tackled the backing vocals today on the Tascam. That’s 12 tracks of backing vocals PLUS 4 tracks of vocals covering two bridges.

The bridge vocals are a bit ropey – touch of the backing vocals in “It’s Getting Better” by The Beatles. I may keep them all OR I may edit together the best bits OR I may just re-record them at a later stage. But for now, the track is done until I can get my kit together…

Sponsored by the letter S. I was busy this morning with non-musical matters, so I wasn’t able

Sponsored by the letter S.

I was busy this morning with non-musical matters, so I wasn’t able to start my session until the afternoon. Managed to get down 6 main vocal tracks on the Tascam, and was starting on the backing vocals when the voice started breaking down. That, plus the fact that one of the neighbours started mowing their lawn (I’d forgotten part of the unwritten code of suburbia – no mowing until after lunch), meant that I had to abandon the session after about 90 minutes.

Still, I got my 6 tracks down, so that was something. I also discovered that I’d either written too many or too few words. I’ll have to sort this out in the editing process. Part of the problem here was that I haven’t yet had a chance to track guitars, therefore there is no solo in situ at present and I’m not exactly sure where it will go at the end. So that confuses the issue of the number of verses and choruses required in the song.

Still, we love a challenge, don’t we?

And, as a bonus, I managed to achieve something I’d been thinking of doing for a long while. There’s a fantastic natural spring-type reverb sound in my landing. I wanted to capture that sound before I move house, so I spent a few minutes in my hallway recording the reverb from a series of handclaps. I hope to be able to use the reverb sound as a convolution reverb effect in the future. If you don’t know what a “convolution reverb” effect is, AA 3 describes it as an effect which ”reproduces rooms ranging from coat closets to concert halls. Convolution-based reverbs use impulse files to simulate acoustic spaces. The results are incredibly realistic and life-like.”

We’ll see about that in the sweet by-and-by.

Regards,

One of the best days in a long time!… Today was the big shopping spree for new clothes –

One of the best days in a long time!…

Today was the big shopping spree for new clothes – and it was a whole lot more than that, it was the search for a new style. I think I found what I’ve been looking for.

I’ve really liked the preppy look – full pull-over sweater on top of a collared shirt… so awesome. Well, my weight loss hasn’t led me quite to that point in playing dress-up, but I think I’ve accomplished a sub-step on my way there. I got a few collared shirts, a pull-over sweater with a turtle-neck, a vest, and plenty of new jeans, as well as a sick sweatshirt. And get this!… I dropped two pant sizes. I was so ecstatic! I haven’t fit into 34’s for ages (literally).

Anyway, I’m extremely happy with my outfits and cannot wait to bring ‘em to the ole Corvallis. Could not had a better time shopping… Well… Maybe. I feel so changed and definitely hope to leave behind the old me.

I’ve decided my Halloween costume. I shall be a DJ! I’ve got my basic Sennheiser headphones and my T-Qualizer shirt (that basically fits now – has ALWAYS been a challenge since it was imported from Europe). I am thinking what else I might need. I don’t really want to go hardcore, so maybe this is enough.

So stoked for Halloween weekend to come in 6 days! Kevin’s good friend is visiting with his girlfriend (and her friends, too) and are staying the night. PARTAY!… Campus will be buzzing!

Haircut tomorrow, along with shoe shopping and a few more errands.

I miss Corvallis, though. I feel bad leaving Kevin at the apartment alone. Ok, it sounds weird, but it’s something I think about. I don’t have as much of a desperation to go home anymore like I did during the stagnation of dorms. I love the apartment!

Hit up 24 Hour Fitness tonight – man the food I’ve consumed yesterday and today since being home is inevitably going to put me up a pound or two – had to at least try to burn some of it off. I can’t wait to get back to the normal routine of working out at Dixon. I come home and I see how I used to live – and how contrast it is to my way of life in Corvallis… The later being better, actually.

Went to Haggen to pick up my final paycheck. My coworker’s paycheck was there, and his last day was one day prior to mine… so mine should be there too – but it wasn’t! There’s more workarounds, but it’s a pain.

Ready to turn the page and start a new chapter… Bring it on!

After researching Sony, RCA, and Sennheiser wireless headphones I settled on the Sennheiser RS-120

After researching Sony, RCA, and Sennheiser wireless headphones I settled on the Sennheiser RS-120’s and I have no regrets. These are excellent headphones. I ended up buying them at GoogGuys. When I asked the associate if I could try them he connected them to a DVD player and they came to life. I walked all the way accross the store filled with electronics and heard no interference what-so-ever. I was nothing short of impressed and bought them right then and there.

Now that I have been using them for several weeks I am still amazed by them. I didn’t know wireless headphones could be this good. There is no interference around my house. The 300ft range claim is about right. Maybe a bit conservative. I can mow my rental house lawn accross the street and even go next door and still get a good signal.

Sound quality is excellent. Bass is strong, mids are prominent, and highs are crisp. These phones work great for music, TV, and movies. I couldn’t be happier with the sound. There is some spotty static in a couple places upstairs but it is practically inaudible when listening to something.

I don’t know how long the batteries last because they have never run out. I have worn them for almost 10 hours straight and they were still going strong. I put them on the charger after each use and they have never shown any signs of a low battery.

That brings me to the charging system. It is simply superb. Unlike most other wireless phone charging systems this one is very simple. Just set the headphones on the metal “tube” that sticks out of the base and it charges. No messing around to get them just right so the contacts will contact (AKA Sony).

Build quality is very good. They are light weight, yet sturdy. The RS-120’s are much sturdier than any of the other Sennheiser RS phones. They are very comfortable as well. I was worried that, due to their open air, on the ear design that they would get uncomfortable after wearing them for a few hours. I was proven wrong. They have never become uncomfortable.

I have read some reviews where people complain that the base turns off whenever it wants. It has an auto-off features so that it shuts off if it gets not signal for a few minutes. I see no problem with that and it has never bothered me since I’m usually listening to something when I’m wearing them.

I have the base connected to my home theater receiver to which I have a TV, DVD player, and my PC connected. The phones work well with all of those sources. Games, music, movies, TV, everything sounds great and I recommend these phones whole heartedly. You would be hard pressed to find a better deal in this price range.

Product Description
The Sennheiser RS-120 Wireless Headphones are an ideal choice for wireless use of both Hi-Fi audio and the TV. The open-ear headphones are supraaural and provide detailed, warm sound reproduction with a strong bass response. The headphone receive sound through walls and ceilings so you won’t have to remain in the same room as your equipment. Power comes from NiMH batteries that are recharged by simply putting the headphones on their transmitter base that can be mounted to a wall. The entire system weighs just 8.1 ounces, and it comes with a two-year warranty.

ME AND MY CYBERLORD

Recorded 3 tracks of whispered vocals on the Tascam and transferred them on to CE4. These can be flown in to taste when editing the track.

MECHANICAL IMPERFECT

Recorded 6 takes of vocals – three low-pitched/spoken/monotonous and three “sung”. All rather pitchy, but I don’t mind, as that rather fits into the overall concept of the song – “mechanical” but “imperfect” performances.

Busy day, then, and in the middle of it all, I had to dash off to deal with an issue in the new house. Only three weeks away from a move now – I’ve been saying that for almost a year though…:-)
