“Wilhelm Wundt and William James are usually thought of as the fathers of psychology, as well as the founders of psychology’s first two great “schools.

Wilhelm Wundt was born in the village of Neckerau in Baden, Germany on August 16, 1832.  The son of a Lutheran pastor, he was a solitary and studious boy.  He roomed with and was tutored by his fathers assistant, the vicar of the church.  He was sent off to boarding school at 13, and the university at 19.

He studied medicine at Tübingen, Heidelberg, and Berlin, although interested more in the scientific aspect than in a medical career.  In 1857, he was appointed dozent (instructor) at Heidelberg, where he lectured on physiology.  From 1858 to 1864, he also served as an assistant to the famous physiologist Helmholtz, and studied the neurological and chemical stimulation of muscles.

In 1864, he became an assistant professor at Heidelberg.  Three years later, he started a course he called physiological psychology, which focused on the border between physiology and psychology, i.e. the senses and reactions — an interest inspired by the work of Weber and Fechner.  His lecture notes would eventually become his major work, the Principles of Physiological Psychology (Grundzüge der physiologischen Psychologie), which would be published in 1873 and 1874.

Like Fechner and many others at the time, Wundt accepted the Spinozan idea of psychophysical parallelism:  Every physical event has a mental counterpart, and every mental event has a physical counterpart.  And he believed, like Fechner, that the availability of measurable stimuli (and reactions) could make psychological events open to something like experimental methodology in a way earlier philosophers such as Kant thought impossible.

The method that Wundt developed is a sort of experimental introspection:  The researcher was to carefully observe some simple event — one that could be measured as to quality, intensity, or duration — and record his responses to variations of those events. (Note that in German philosophy at that time, sensations were considered psychological events, and therefore “internal” to the mind, even though the sensation is of something that is “outside” the mind.  Hence what we might call observation was called by Wundt introspection!)

To continue his story, Wundt went on to become chair of “inductive philosophy” at Zürich in 1874, and then professor of philosophy at Leipzig in 1875.  It was there that he would stay and work for the next 45 years!

In 1875, a room was set aside for Wundt for demonstrations in what we now call sensation and perception.  This is the same year that William James would set up a similar lab at Harvard.  We can celebrate that year as the founding of experimental psychology!

In 1879, Wundt assisted his first graduate student at true psychological research — another milestone.  In 1881, he started the journal Philosophische Studien.  In 1883, he began the first course to be titled experimental psychology.  And in 1894, his efforts were rewarded with the official establishment of an “Institute for Experimental Psychology” at Leipzig — the first such in the world.

Wundt was known to everyone as a quiet, hard-working, and very methodical researcher, as well as a very good lecturer.  The latter comment is from the standards of the day, which were considerably different from today’s:  He would go on in a low voice for a couple of hours at a time, without notes or audio-visual aides and without pausing for questions.  His students loved him, but we would no doubt criticize him for not being sufficiently entertaining!

It is curious to note that during this same busy time period, Wundt also published four books in philosophy!  Keep in mind that, at this time, psychology was not considered something separate from philosophy.  In fact, Wundt rejected the idea when someone suggested it to him!

The studies conducted by Wundt and his now numerous students were mostly on sensation and perception, and of those, most concerned vision.  In addition, there were studies on reaction time, attention, feelings, and associations.  In all, he supervised 186 doctoral dissertations, most in psychology.

Among his better known students were Oswald Külpe and Hugo Munsterberg (whom James invited to teach at Harvard), the Russian behaviorists Bekhterev and Pavlov, as well as American students such as Hall (“father” of developmental psychology in America), James McKeen Cattell, Lightner Witmer (founder of the first psychological clinic in the US, at U of Penn), and Wundt’s main interpreter to the English speaking world, E. B. Titchener.  Titchener is particularly responsible for interpreting Wundt badly!

Later in his career, Wundt became interested in social or cultural psychology. Contrary to what many believe, Wundt did not think that the experimental study of sensations was the be all and end all of psychology!  In fact, he felt that that was only the surface, and additionally that most of psychology was not as amenable to experimental methods.

Instead, he felt that we had to approach cultural psychology through the products it produced — mythology, for example, cultural practices and rituals, literature and art…. He wrote a ten volume Völkerpsychologie, published between 1900 and 1920, which included the idea of stages of cultural development, from the primitive, to the totemic, through the age of heroes and gods, to the age of modern man.

In 1920, he wrote Erlebtes and Erkanntes, his autobiography.  A short time later, on August 31, 1920, he died.”

“Phantom” pain is like a ghost in the body — but it’s anything but imaginary. People who have had an arm or leg amputated can often still feel sensations of the missing limb, even though it’s no longer there. These sensations can be painful, and scientists are always looking for new ways to help relieve this phantom pain for amputees. Treatment often involves using mirrors to visually trick the person’s brain. The thinking is that, if a person can “see” his own body in a new way, his brain may stop sending pain messages.

In a new study, a team of neuroscientists have made another surprising discovery about amputees: They can be taught to mentally move their missing limbs in ways that are impossible in the real, physical world. It’s impossible for a person to bend his wrist down and then twist his hand around in a full circle.

Seven people who had had their arms amputated above the elbow participated in the experiment. After extensive mental training, four of the seven were able to feel the sensation of this impossible act, and describe it in detail.

“It is very surprising that anybody — amputees or not — can learn impossible movements just by thinking about it,” Henrik Ehrsson of the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, told Science News. Ehrsson is a neuroscientist, which is a scientist who studies the brain and nervous system.

Although the study itself is interesting, it may be able to help people with other kinds of mental disorders. A person with anorexia nervosa, for example, loses her appetite and/or stops eating, sometimes with fatal results. People with anorexia are usually believed to have a distorted self-image and often see themselves in an extremely negative way. But people suffering from this condition may benefit from this new research, Lorimer Moseley of the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute in Randwick, Australia, told to Science News. Just as amputees imagined their phantom limbs could move in impossible ways, a person with anorexia may be able to change self-image by concentrating on a change to the body.

V.S. Ramachandran is a neuroscientist and the director of the Center for Brain and Cognition at the University of California, San Diego. In his research, Ramachandran has shown that phantom pain can be reduced with the help of a mirror. The mirror is placed so that when the amputee looks in the mirror, it looks like he has both hands. As he looks at the reflection, he clenches and unclenches his one hand while—and it appears as though both hands and are clenching and unclenching. At the same time, he mentally clenches and unclenches his phantom hand. When he sees both hands unclenching, he feels pain lessen.

Ramachandran says his mirror therapy, as well as the new research, show that much is left to learn about how the brain perceives the body. “Body image turns out to be extraordinarily plastic,” Ramachandran told Science News. “We think of ourselves as stable people with a stable body image — but we can inhabit a body that cannot exist in the physical world.”

Il giorno del funerale le strade del centro erano state chiuse al traffico, invase da centinaia di migliaia di persone con l’aria afflitta e bouquet primavera. E’ stato uno dei momenti più irreali che abbia mai vissuto (primo classificato: è un’altra vita! è un’altra vita! Frase in codice…).

Il giorno dopo io e Alessandra, non troppo afflitti dall’evento, abbiamo visitato una mostra temporanea alla Royal Academy of Arts. Si intitolava “Sensation!” e raggruppava i nuovi nomi (alcuni già famosetti, altri piuttosto sconosciuti, almeno a me) dell’arte britannica contemporanea. Non sapevamo, allora, che fosse così importante (anche perché, dal titolo, uno poteva pensare a una cazzata spaventosa..). Quindi siamo entrati abbastanza scettici. Devo invece dire che quel che vidi mi piacque parecchio, e che ancora oggi ricordo molte delle opere presenti.

C’era un artista che si era tolto il sangue per vari mesi, lo aveva collezionato, lo aveva semi-congelato e poi plasmato per farne una scultura-autoritratto. Era conservato in una teca-frigo…

Un’altro aveva fatto il ritratto di una assassina di bambini realmente vissuta accostando le sagome di centinaia di manine sulla tela (grande polemica…)

Poi c’era il celebre Damien Hirst,  con un maiale tagliato a metà e separato in due contenitori di vetro pieni di formaldeide e montati su rotaie. A un certo punto una metà si allontanava dall’altra e si vedevano le interiora del maiale. Se non sbaglio si intitolava tipo “Little pig goes shopping, little pig stays home”. Ironico, anche.

Ma ecco che entro in una stanza e subito mi riallaccio alla sensazione di irrealtà provata il giorno prima ai funerali di Lady D. E’ una stanza vuota, se non ricordo male. In mezzo, per terra, vedo qualcosa di lungo, grigio, di circa un metro, ma non vedo esattamente cos’è. Mi avvicino. Disturba. Si tratta un uomo nudo, morto, disteso per terra, lungo circa un metro ma perfettamente proporzionato. E’ questo che lo rende così fastidioso, la sua perfezione e la sua piccolezza. Il titolo dell’opera è Dead dad (papà morto), ed è stata una delle sue prime opere importanti. Per me è geniale. Non mi stupisco che in seguito Ron Mueck sia diventato un artista famoso. Non so se in video fanno le stesso effetto che dal vivo, non credo proprio, ma vi segnalo comunque questo video su Youtube dove potete vedere un montaggio di altre sue sculture. Solo in alcune, però, si percepisce la stranezza del fatto che siano più piccole o più grandi del normale. Io le trovo molto inquietanti ma belllissime.

E in fondo ricordate: la realtà non esiste.

Há cerca de dois meses, estive num debate na Mall Galley, uma galeria em Trafalgar Square a caminho de Buckingham, em que Brian Swell, o famoso crítico do Evening Standard, era um dos debatedores. O tema era o seguinte: Young British Artists estão mortos? O que virá depois?

Young British Artists são um grupo de artistas ingleses provocadores que fizeram muito barulho no começo nos anos 90. Eles foram garimpados e depois reunidos pelo colecionador e galerista Charles Saatchi, em 1997, na Sensation. A exposição escandalizou a Royal Academy of Arts londrina. Os expoentes do grupo são Damien Hirst (com o tubarão no formol), a Tracey Emin (com a cabana com o nome de todas as pessoas com quem ela havia dormido) e Sarah Lucas (com dois ovos fritos e um kebab, questionando a nudez feminina).

Essa iquietação é tão explícita que na segunda-feira, 23, Charles Saatchi, famoso por ser recluso e reservado, vai estrear um programa na BBC2 chamado School of Saatchi. Será um reality show que pretende encontrar um novo expoente da arte contemporânea.

2. Fotografia! Mas não apenas como documentário, mas novos estudos de luz (uns bem esquisistos por sinal, como uma garota que fotografou sex clubs poloneses) e texturas.

3.Figurativo, pelo amor de Brian Swell, que implora que os artistas voltem a aprender a desenhar para só depois descontruirem as figuras de suas pinturas ou escolherem o abstrato. Há menos, na verdade apenas uma, instalação, e há sim um retorno (se é que um dia ele se foi) ao figurativo.

Os trabalhos ali estavam todos a venda, com preços que variavam entre 500 e 2000 libras. Jay Joplin, o dono da White Cube e ex namorado da Lilly Allen, que hoje representa Tracey Emin apareceu por lá. Se alguém vai valer o que Damien Hirst vale hoje, sua última remessa de 25 telas foram vendidas por US$ 50 milhões, não se sabe. Mas o mais bacana desse evento, foi estar num ambiente que misturava de jovens artistas, ávidos para interpretar o olhar de quem observava o trabalho deles, novos curadores (como eu) e tarimbados galeristas e colecionadores, na busca de pechinchas que podem vir a custar milhões.

When in turbulent torment of the great unknown,
I sought some peace for a troubled heart
Down by the river.

The air was thin
And the pale blue sky was running high
Like the rushing tide and the beating pulse of time.

The shore sloped steeply to the edge,

My wife is confused about why I wear women’s clothes. She doesn’t get the reasons I do it.  And if she is confused by it, there are probably a whole bunch of non-crossdressers out there who don’t get it either.

There are many, many aspects to crossdressing. For me, these boil down (essentially, anyway) to two major factors: feel, and feeling.

What’s the difference? (I hear some of you asking.) It’s this:  For certain items of clothing, I like the way they feel. Smooth nylon panties feel great next to my skin, and I like the way they feel under my fingers. Pantyhose and tights hug the legs…who doesn’t like to be hugged all day?   Satin anything feels great next to the skin.  Even the feel of a bra around my chest and back is comfortable to me. The swish of a skirt around my legs is heaven!

Sometimes, it’s just a matter of a feel that isn’t usually there otherwise…a different feel than I’m used to, in other words. The feel of lipstick on my lips (well, where else, Dianna? Duh!) is such a sensation—it isn’t necessarily exciting on its own, but because it reminds me that I’m wearing lipstick, it feels good.  The push and pull of my leg muscles in a pair of heels is also a sensation—particularly my 4-inch heels that I’m still getting used to!

But in addition to the way some clothes feel, there is the feeling I get while wearing them. Wearing a dress not only feels good to me, but also makes me relaxed, comfortable in my skin and my head, and confident. The feeling of being feminine does this to me. Knowing I’m wearing lipstick, even if I couldn’t feel it, gives me a good feeling.

The feel of certain clothes is definitely arousing—it’s a crude point, but one that must be mentioned, if we are to help non-crossdressers to understand why we dress. Satins and silks just turn me on sometimes…tell me they don’t turn you on as well.  Liar.   But this is really only a small, small part of why I do this.  I enjoy feeling feminine, plain and simple.  The feel is a bonus…the feeling is all.

My wife gets the whole “sensations” thing.  She can wrap her head around the physical aspect of what I do.  She gets that some things just feel good.  She doesn’t like it very much—not that she says outright, but her actions and words speak volumes nonetheless—but at least she “gets” that.

She does not get the feelings I have. Not that I’ve talked to her about them, because she’s still not anywhere near where she needs to be in her head to bring the topic up (and I’ve said I never will).  But I know her–21 years married and I had better!—and I know she just can’t accept or understand that sometimes (okay, usually!) I just like to feel feminine. I like to talk clothes, to call someone “sweetie” or “dear”, to voice my appreciation of someone else’s looks or words without them thinking I have an ulterior motive. And I love shopping for clothes.  In short, I just like feeling “girly” sometimes.

I scared her the other day–actually, the word she used was “frightened”.  She made one of her few and tiny forays into actually attempting to understand me—though “understanding” is not really what she’s after during these forays…she wants reassuring instead.  That’s another whole post.

She asked me, if we lived a couple hundred years ago, when men wore satin shirts and tights, would that have been enough for me?  Or, would I still have needed to wear a gown sometimes?  I asked her if she was really sure she wanted to know the answer, and she immediately backed off.  “Okay, now you’re frightening me,” she said.  So she gets “feel”, but “feeling” apparently frightens her.  For those of you who haven’t guessed, yes, I would have wanted to wear a gown.  Heck, I want to wear one now!)

Don’t get me wrong…I’m one of the loudest male shouters at our weekly football get-togethers. (Well, when the Patriots are playing, anyway.) I also enjoy solving the problems of home improvement (sometimes even successfully!), and love using my power tools.  But sometimes I just want to curl up on the couch with my legs under me and a cup of herb tea in my hand, reading a good book. My ideal date would be to go shopping with my wife…not just for her. What a great feeling that would be!

But I also love the feel of my new frilly red panties.

Vem vet, men hypen är ett faktum. Paranormal Activity anses av internationell media som årets skräckfilm. Gjord utan budget och inget manus, och blev känd över en natt mer eller mindre och jämförs med en liknande succé nämligen “Blair Witch Project”.

Tyvärr verkar den tydligen vara för äcklig för att visas på bio i Karlstad, så vi får väl snällt vänta på DVD release istället så länge.

Paranormal Activity handlar om ett ungt par som misstänker att deras hus är hemsökt. För att skaffa bevis installerar de övervakningskameror som ska spela in vad som egentligen händer när de sover.
