Sorry I missed yesterday’s newspaper. We had to leave early for Thanksgiving. But there’s a lot to do today. The newspaper is bursting of stuff to come! Who knew that for once it would be this way?

The recent “chill” on the island has gotten the island excited. To celebrate winter’s coming, the Ski Village is hosting a Snow Maze for members!

Coins for Change will be coming back on Dec. 10th! Get your bells out and get ready to help!

There are a lot of things going on today, but what about everything else?

OKAY! Putting yesterday aside, now for today’s news! The snow maze has started, but before you go, take a lift up to the Ski Hill. There’s a free blue touge there, and a new sledding catalog!

Pretty sweet, but not as sweet as the snow maze! Head back down to the Ski Village and jump into the maze! If you want to cheat or are really lost, there’s a stand besides the maze entrance that shows you the right way to go! Just click on it and the red button and this map appears.

Take a few twists and turns.. uhm.. wait was it this way? No this way. Ah! Here we are! The end of the maze!

Go inside the strange cave with strange *hint* footprints outside and pick up a Yeti outfit!

…….I feel like this was planned… *murmur murmur* Oh! Sorry. Ignore me. =^_^=”‘

After you leave the maze, go to the sport shop. There’s a new catalog for you to look at. I really think the green team is becoming popular..

Uh yeah…

Anyways, there’s only three secrets in this one. The green hockey outfit, hidden in the cheering green penguin, the green goaly outfit, hidden in another cheering green penguin, and the white pom-poms, hidden in the word, “ice”.

Is there anything I’m forgetting… Oh! Yes! On the walls of the Fire Dojo are now instructions and the legend, like in the regular dojo.

And another thing Club Penguin forgot to announce! We have new music in our igloos!

Sensei - the role model

As the proud karateka and budoka we like to think we are, we live and breathe the dojokun, which goes as follows for readers unfamiliar with it:

First. Seek perfection of character
First. Protect the way of the truth
First. Foster the spirit of effort
First. Respect the principles of etiquette and respect others
First. Guard against impetuous courage and refrain from violent behavior.

This is the ground rules of karate and the dojokun holds the spirit and legacy of the japanese bushi. This means everything- and is the heart of karate for those who understand and practice the old ways. They are all equally important and none of them must be ignored.

This is what made the amazing senseis we admire around the world. Decades of virtuous training, faithfully following the way of the bushi, made them into legendary individuals.

It is sad to see many people failing miserably at this, and even worse seeing those who ignore the dojokun all together. It’s sad knowing that they spend all these years training and not really getting any better or closer to “enlightenment”. Yes, they are often great athletes and sportsmen, but they often also lack what makes the martial artist a martial artist.

But one would think that those far “up the latter”, with 30+ years of experience and more dan grades than you can count on one hand, would be a pretty good role model. Many of which are sensei/instructor of their own schools/clubs, the kingpins of your district, the ones that should be your guide on the right path. But no … that seems not always the case unfortunately.

We often hear about clenches between associations, some epic and some miniscule. Also, these individuals in question struggle within their own groups. We have all heard about the split of JKA when sensei Nakayama M. passed away, where the successors could not come together and decide the future direction of the JKA. Many of us have also experienced club level clenches, where clubs have split into several smaller clubs just because the instructors/leaders dont get along.

What happened to the dojokun then? What happened to “respect others”, “protect the truth” and the rest of the lot? It seems they think the dojokun is like a hat you can take on and off as you see fit. It seems the temptation of taking the easy way out becomes to great and the spirit of the dojokun is silently pushed aside.

It is a real “downer” to realize that in some ways you have come further on your path than your role models and mentors. When you can see weaknesses in character you would think they should have overcome decades ago, individual traits you for sure would not think they possessed.

All of a sudden you need to reevaluate your standing in the hierarchy and how you should relate and react to what is going on in your environment. What would be the right thing to do? You, yourself do not want to take the dojokun-hat off of course so you need to respect them as they are “others”, but will it then be possible to protect the way of truth at the same time? You will not be true to yourself, nor your fading role model for that matter if you let your integrity disintegrate. Am I dreaming if I think that everyone should be able follow the dojokun (as a way of life)? Do I have faulty perception of human capabilities?

I will have to find new role models I guess, someone “further up the hill”. Not sure who this will be yet, maybe a topic for a later blog All I can do for now is to be my own role model and proudly wear my dojokun-hat knowing that I have a bit more integrity than many others.

What BA skills are of value in an Agile world?

I recently created a post on a BA’s role on agile projects. The essential message was, simply, that there is no BA role. There’s also no PM role either. However, both disciplines have an immense number of skills that are incredibly valuable in agile projects.

Sprint Zero

Identifying users: Understanding who to talk to and who the prioritised feature sets and requirements represents if the first skill needed on an agile project. A BAs skills in stakeholder segmentation is the perfect starting point as is documenting them as personas.
Collecting user needs described on story cards: BAs have a great number of skills in eliciting requirements. In Sprint Zero all that is required is documentation as a story card:”As a [role] I need to [activity] in order to [outcome]“This gives you great traceability throughout the project because everything as to tie into enabling the user to undertake the activity and give them the outcome they seek.

Articulating the skinny solution

Prioritisation of requirements: What requirements are more important than others? BAs have skills in negotiation, liaison, workshop organisation and execution. Pair a BA with an Information Architect (IA) or user-experience designer (UXD) and you get a good idea of the prioritisation of their needs and how they need to be articulated during the iteration phases as complete feature sets. Remember it’s not about having mandatory, desirable, etc. Instead, agile requirements are listed in priority order with a minimum set — the things we can’t do without — forming the skinny solution.This is where the BAs skills are essentially lacking because it’s more in the province of cognitive and behavioural psychology. The skinny system reflects users’ hygiene factors.Pair a BA with an IA, however, and the way to elicit the hygiene factors will become clear.

Planning an iteration

Work estimation and benchmarking: What is the team going to produce? What skills are required? What activities will be done in this iteration? How long will elicitation and validation tasks take? These are all questions that BAs because of their ongoing involvement in projects are readily able to answer.I like to ensure that I’ve got a wiki handy to note the aspects of the estimation so that I can change the estimation into a benchmark once the work has been completed. Over time, this becomes a valuable knowledge tool because I can simply say “when we last did it, it took [this long]“
Risk analysis: While doing work it’s the job of all team members to understand issues and risks as they arise and communicate them to the team’s leader, Sensei or Product Owner. The ability, therefore, to analyse on the fly is vital to the team and a skill that BAs have in spades.I find that differentiating between a fear and a risk is the hardest thing for peope to grasp. People often fear that something will eventuate, but when you start to boil things down into hard facts abouta) the impact the issue will have, and
b) the actual likelihood of occurence (based on research) then fears can rapidly vanish when also paired with constant communication from standup meetings.

In this way, the BAs skills are best applied in the Roshi, Scrum Master or Project Lead roles.

Understanding the context

Elicitation and observation: Analysing how people work, why, and the outcomes achieved is an important part of a BAs skill set. Whether done through interviews, focus groups or a contextual inquiry (my own favourite), understanding the context of use and communicating it is a BAs core strength in agile environments
Communication: How do you relate to the rest of your multidisciplinary team that you know the context of use — both from a user and systems perspective? BAs have a variety of tools they use regularly coupled with a talent for customisation of communication mediums and messages so that information is passed on to others with maximum efficiency.So what are some of these tools?
- Storyboards (which I love to draw!)
- Plans on a page (epic stories)
- User pathways
- Behavioural and process flow diagrams
- Context diagram
- Logical data model
Notice that these are all light-weight, can be done in a short period of time, are easily changed, and are, essentially, placholders for a conversation.

Understanding the human, strategic and system requirements

Custodianship of requirements: Understanding context is one thing, but then drawing the relationships between context and the needs of different people, and then taking into consideration the constraints, is a BA’s bread and butter. Where other disciplines, particularly UXD, tend to have greater strength in understanding and documenting context, the BAs strength has always been in elicitation, translation and communication of requirements, and then the management of these requiremens through to solution design, validation and implementation.For people like me, who tend to like to work at the ‘big picture’, having a BA who is detail oriented is a must.

Solution design

Translation, communication and business representation: This is my favourite part of the iteration. While other team members might be responsible for the organisation of information of a system, its interaction design, and its systems architectural design, the BAs skills best served during the design phase is in representation of business and end-users. This is largely because their role as custodian of requirements makes them the most familiar with what is required and what the outcomes need to be when putting everything together.

Validation of the solution

Diplomacy, negotiation, and whole-of-project representation: While programmers use automated testing in agile environments one aspect that can’t be automatically tested is whether or not the system behaves in the way that matches the way users need and want to use the product. Here the BAs diplomacy is his most valuable asset to bring to the agile project. He has to balance the needs of everyone, as well as their expectations, to help negotiate an agreement that the solution works, or whether additional things need to be incorporated in order for the solution to be acceptable to those who will use it.Of course, the outcome also needs to be communicated to The Powers That Be. With their strong skills in diplomacy and negotiation, a BA is able to represent the team and project as its Roshi, Scrum Master, or Project Lead.Then there’s letting the team know they’ve not suceeded in producing a valid solution. Lots of people get very attached to what they think is the right way to proceed and having users tell you that it’s not what they want can be incredibly frustrating. It means that the BAs skills of diplomacy are not only valued as an outward facing ability but also as an inward facing one as well

Implementation

Diplomacy and sign-off: Having completed the ISO13407 cycle final implementation the feature set needs to be signed-off. Someone has to remind users and the business of how the iteration has been conducted and the points of agreement throughout. This can be a delicate matter particularly given many users and sponsors want a big thick document to read at their leisure and then sign.I usually print and package all of the smaller deliverables and put them into a folder. The first page lists the milestones and activities, agreement dates and who was present/represented, and when agreement was reached. The bottom of the page has the dotted line on which to sign.
Setting expectations: I’ve found other sponsors don’t care so much about being this formal, particularly given the BA has been in constant communication with them and set expectations along the entire feature set iteration.

Ultimately, while there is no actual BA role, a BAs skill sets are of incredible importance throughout an agile project. This is a breath of fresh air for those of us who are only invited by the PM to elicit requirements during the first stage of the a waterfall project only then to be brought back onto the scene to help with users acceptance testing. This, ultimately, is why as BAs, we should all be championing agile. And if you’re not, then you should be!

YATTA! Happy happy! I just became a full-fledged fire ninja! I’m so excited! The battle with Sensei was fun. He’s an awesome penguin to learn from. He’s got some pretty wicked cards, but that didn’t stop me! I managed to beat him, then I received my fire gem and title as a fire ninja!

Since this is a rare occasion, I decided to for once record it and make a video! Trust me, it was a pain to make, edit and upload in only 20 minutes. But it’s pretty cool and I hope you enjoy it! I didn’t have any audio recorder, so after I finished the video I went back in and added music.

Hey CP, Today screenhog is showing us how to play Card-Jistu Fire!Take a look!

General Stuff:

There are practice mats for 2, 3, and 4 players. You can play with friends there.
If you talk to Sensei, and you pick the “Earn your Fire Suit” option, he’ll set up a match. You get more experience points if you do this.
You can enter new offline trading card codes and you’ll get cards added to your online deck. You won’t see the animations in the Card-Jitsu Fire game but you can see them if you’re playing the original Card-Jitsu game.

How to Play:

On your turn, select the stone which determines the spaces you move, choose your tile (you have 2 options), and then you’ll pick your card to determine the outcome of the round.
If you land on one of these, - choose a card. The highest number wins. If you don’t have the element, you cannot win that round.

Screenhog has a simpler guide to how to play card-jitsu fire. If you want to read my long rambling, but more detailed guide, the post is below this one.

Lots of you are already Card-Jitsu Fire experts! But I wanted to give you some game info in case you haven’t had a chance to play the new game in the Fire Dojo yet:

General Stuff:

There are practice mats for 2, 3, and 4 players. You can play with friends there.
If you talk to Sensei, and you pick the “Earn your Fire Suit” option, he’ll set up a match. You get more experience points if you do this.
You can enter new offline trading card codes and you’ll get cards added to your online deck. You won’t see the animations in the Card-Jitsu Fire game but you can see them if you’re playing the original Card-Jitsu game.

How to Play:

On your turn, select the stone which determines the spaces you move, choose your tile (you have 2 options), and then you’ll pick your card to determine the outcome of the round.
If you land on one of these, - choose a card. The highest number wins. If you don’t have the element, you cannot win that round.

Hey everyone! Card-Jitsu Fire is out! I think this is a really fun game! Click HERE for my guide! To play it, go to the Volcano aka Fire Dojo and talk to Sensei and he will give u your Fire Booster Deck:

When you go and talk to Sensei, click his suit and he will tell you a lot about it! Here is the full suit:

After you beat Sensei, he will tell you that you are a fire ninja and you will get the Fire Gem!

Card-Jitsu Fire is kind of like Card-Jitsu, you will get different things for your winnings and eventually the last item once you beat Sensei. In the future, Club Penguin will also make two more rooms for Card Jitsu, the Water Dojo and the Snow Dojo. After you get all of the gems from the rooms, it will look like this.

You can also see how your doing by selecting the Card-Jitsu Cards in the corner.

One more thing I forgot about, you can also see the progress of your penguin by selecting the Card-Jitsu Cards on your computer screen!

Now, here me all the Ninja’s! Master the element of Fire and become a true Fire Ninja! Heres how!

Car-Jitsu Fire Instructions

To play, go to the Sensei and seclect “Earn Fire Suit” then wait to be matched with other penguins like you.

Choose one of the glowing yellow rocks in the middle of the field. The number on the rocks represent how many spaces you move.

You could choose from either one of the outer glowing yellow rocks. If it lands on 2 Card-Jitsu Cards in the middle of the outer stones (like a water, snow, or fire rock) it will be a regular Card-Jitsu Match.

If you choose the Fire rock, it’ll be a Fire Battle, Fire vs Fire, and the higher power card will win. It’ll even have arrows on the side of the cards you can/should select! This goes for every element on the rocks, Fire, Water and Snow.

The 2 outer stones that have Fire, Water and Snow will allow you to choose whichever element you wish to use. You always with 6 Fire Powers, and if you loose a round you’ll loose one of your fire powers (you will be able to see it on the bottom right of your player card during the battles). After all the powers you originally had are gone, you are out of the game. As soon as everyone looses there powers before you, you win. That means that the person who can hold on to their powers the longest wins!

If your in a round and it shows an element with a circle-backslash symbol, that shows you don’t have any cards with that specific element in the round.

If you win a normal Card-Jitsu Fire match you’ll take one of your opponent’s powers!

If you and your opponent land on the same tile, you will both have a normal Card-Jitsu Battle!

When you’re battling for the Fire Sandals, you’ll receive ten percent for each win in the matches. Five percent for your Magma Coat and three percent for your Fire Helmet!

You also receive two percent for each loss in a match.

Hey guys, I’m so sick today, so I just felt like posting a bug that’s been going around. Now on Club Penguin the new game is out , I love it , but there is one problem about it certainly right now of it being so popular. See you walk around into the Fire Dojo and walk to Sensei. You are so very happy about battling cause you love it so much. Then just as it says you have four people wanting to battle, pop up comes up saying , ” this game is certainly full thank you for patience. Well its annoying, but I just close out of the warning and map and keep trying. Then as you get into a game it just starts loading forever and ever then at 0, all the players quit -.-. So some penguins can’t wait one minute then rather go through the pop up again? I find this funny, but some of you might be one of those penguins that don’t like to wait so I understand that you just want to play the game not wait. I’m just talking to the people that don’t like it so much.

P.s It sounds like I’m complaining 0.0

2009 November/December Furniture Catalog Cheats!

Club Penguin has FINALLY posted their new catalog up! And there are TWELVE cheats inside!

The first cheat is on page 1, click on the modern chair and you’ll get the NEW coat rack!

The second cheat is on the first page, click on the tiny leaf in the fish tank and you’ll get the new shoe rack! Also, click on the bottom right leg of the coffee table to get the wood stove!

The next item is on the 2nd page of the catalog. Click on the right side of the snow fort as show below and you will get the old fireplace for cheap price!

For the next secret item click on the top of the snow fortress wall and you’ll get the icicles for your igloo!

The next cheat is on the 3rd page of the catalog! Click on the circled stone on the iron gates and the top right window to receive the halloween cauldron and the jack-o-lantern!

The next secret items are on the 4th page! You need to click on the sad Jack-O-Lantern and the tombstone to get the NEW jack-o-lantern and the LCD TV!

For this cheat you have to click on the ticket booth slot on the 6th page and you’ll receive the CP piano!

For this cheat go to the you just have to click on the top left window of the second to last page to get the bowling alley (my favorite one!)

Lastly, on the same page, click on the two buttons on the top left of the electric stove to get the fridge!

That’s it for the cheats on the furniture catalog and let’s hope for even MORE cheats on the next one! This one seemed to have a whole bunch!
