Recently I had posted a bicycle song in which I was much mystified about the identity of the person who was pedalling away with a pretty young thing seated on the front bar.

Consensus was that the guy was Moti Sagar. Now I have discovered more evidence to support that theory.

In support of my theory, I hereby present this song “Zulfein uljhin hain mere kangnaa se”. This song is from “Burma Road” (1962) and it is picturised on a lady who is clearly Kumkum and a guy who is our mystery man from that cycle song mentioned above. The credit says Moti Sagar. So that is a circumstantial evidence to establish the fact that the person in that cycle song, as well as in this song, can only be Moti Sagar.

This sensuous song is sung by Lata. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and Chitragupta is the music director.

Incidentally, I have discovered that this mystically named movie also had Ashok Kumar and Sheikh Mukhtar in it. Good, good. So this movie sounds like a B grade fun movie. and I can vouch for the fact that the music of this movie is quite A grade, as i will demonstrate by posting a few other songs of this movie in coming days.

Shashi Kapoor, after the success of “Chor Machaaye Shor” got lots of offers and he signed them all. He had decided to make hay while the sun shone. Being picky and choosy was not for him.

Most of these movies flopped predictably. The only Shashi Kapoor movies that succeeded were those which were multi starrer, viz movies in which there were other heroes. Shashi Kapoor had signed up many movies where Amitabh Bachchan was also there and the success of these movies kept Shashi Kapoor going, though it was mainly Amitabh Bachchan whose name sold these movies.

Fakira was one of the rare movies with Shashi Kapoor as sole hero that managed to do well. It was a B grade movie with nothing special. But just like “Chor Machaaye Shor” had become successful because of music, this movie too did well thanks to its music.

Ravindra Jain, the music director of “Chor Machaye Shor” was the music director of ‘Fakira” as well.

Here is a song that had Lata singing at her best. This was a romantic song that was picturised as a sensuous song in the movie ( on Shashi Kapoor and Shabana Azmiand it was perhaps one of the main highlights of the movie.

Ravindra Jain himself was the lyricist as well.

When a product comes up and captures the market, often its clones come up. Some of the clones become nearly as successful as the original.

Shammi Kapoor’s success spawned imitators. Joy Mukherji was the one who came the closest. In fact, his movie “Love In Tokyo” is a movie that is virtually indistinguishable from a Shammi Kapoor movie, except that Shammi Kapoor was not there in this movie and Joy Mukherji was. Everything else, viz the heroine ( Asha Parekh), singer (Rafi), lyricist (Hasrat Jaipuri), music directors ( Shankar Jaikishan) , not to speak of the storyline,were the same as one would find in a Shammi Kapoor movie.

And the songs sung by Rafi are one that gives its listeners the goosebumps even today. These songs have no aged one bit, nor are they likely to get aged.

I have already posted a few songs from this movie. Here is another song from this movie.

This song “aaja re aa zaraa aa” is one of the most sensuous songs that Rafi has sung in his career. He has indeed sung this song with feeling. Lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri is superb. It is amazing how he could come up with so many different lyrics for similar situations that were required to be picturised on Shammi Kapoor movies ( as well as on the movies of his clones).

The picturisation showing Joy Mukherji and Asha Parekh does full justice to the emotion that are sought to be conveyed in this song. Shankar Jaikishan’s music creates just the right ambience for the occasion.

Jaagi badan me jwaala

“Izzat” (1968) is a movie starring Dharmendra. But for me, this movie interests me because this movie also had Jayalalitha, who then was an up and coming actress of Tamil movies.

Jayalalitha went on to have a long innings in Tamil movie industry before following her Mentor M G Ramchandran into Tamil Nadu politics. She by now had become an important politician in Tamil Nadu and Indian politics.

“Izzat” was the only Bollywood movie in which she acted. In this movie she plays a tribal girl. And according to the formula devised on tribal girls in Bollywood movies, she wears half sari and dances and sings couple of sensuous songs.

I have posted one of these songs already. Here is the other, and arguably the more popular of the two songs. This song, like the other song was written by Sahir Ludhianvi and sung by Lata. The lyrics were quite a raze those days and I liked listeneing to this song, even though I was not aware which movie this song was from. Indeed, this song as well as another song of similar words, viz “mujhko thand lag rahi hai” were quite poular songs of the same genre.

“Jewel Thief”, like most Dev Anand movies with S D Burman’s music, had some very nice songs in it. I have already posted a few songs from this movie.

Here is a song sung by Asha Bhonsle and picturised on Tanuja. Had it been picturised on Helen, it would be regarded as a cabaret song, but since it is picturised on Tanuja, and “good” girls in Bollywood did not do “cabaret”, so it would qualify to be called a sensuous song, I believe. In Bollywood code of conduct, good girls were allowed to dance a sensuous song, I am informed.

This song was written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and picturised on a very young looking Tanuja and (ahem) young at heart Dev saab.

It is generally belived that commercial (mainstream) bollywood movies were make belive ones whereas “art” movies depicted reality. Not always.

Here is a song from an out an out commercial movie called “Aapki Kasam” picturised on the saleable pair of actors of the time viz Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. Does one find the feelings depicted in the song unbelievable ? Not at all. On the contrary, it is a very realistic and natural picturisation of the feelings depicted in the song.

Rajesh Khanna is feeling amorous towards Mumtaz in a park full with lovers in various compromising poses, but Mumtaz pours cold water on his passion by forbiddding him to come closer since they are supposed to abstain from love for the day. Rajesh Khanna ofcourse reasons with her, but Mumtaz, like an archtypical Indian housewife of those days would have none of it. Rajesh Khanna implores her not to play hard to get since it is obvious that she too is as willing as him. Yes, willing I am , but today we are supposed to abstain from love, is the reply from her.

The song is depicted wonderfully well. One could have have come with any written better lyrics for this situation that what Anand Bakshi has come up with here. A wonderful song has been picturised even more wonderfully. A pure gem !

It is a boat song, chaayageet song, sensuous song, romantic song, all rolled into one.

Yes, I am talking about this song from “Awaara” that goes “dam bhar jo udhar munh phere”. Every associated with the creating of this song was at that time young/ fresh and at his/her creative best. The team of Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra, Lata, Mukesh and Raj Kapoor Nargis delivered this remarkable piece of art.

Most people may have only listened to the song. And indeed that is how a song got popular those days when this movie was released. of course, this movie was a big hit and many of these listeners watched the movie too. Of course, that was more than five decades ago and one needed to go to the movie hall for that.

“Kartavya” (1978) was a Dharmendra-Rekha movie which for some reason has been forgotten, so much so that I have not been able to get my hands on its VCD/DVD despite trying for several weeks.

The reason why I wanted the video of this movie was for just this song, viz “doori na rahe koi, aaj itne kareeb aao”. The movie is forgotten, but this song has survived. And I find the lyrics by Verma Malik quite sensuous.Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music is soft for a change in this song and Lata’s voice weaves magic.

Since the video of this song is not avaiilable ( and who knows, the video could well turn out to be a disappointment), here is just the song, wiith Lata’s picture.

PS-The video of the song with some imposter’s voice was doing the rounds on youtube all these days. Now I have finally managed to locate the video with the voice of Lata as well.

I have spoken about Vishwajeet being a poor man’s Shammi Kapoor, with Vishwajeet playing similar kinds of roles with similar kinds of music.

But Vishwajeet had more to him than just playing Shammi Kapoor kind of roles. He also played lead roles in suspense movies/ romantic movies which had a different kind of music- soft, melodious, soothing, sensuous kind of music.

Such music was usually composed by Hemant Kumar and when one looks at a list of these songs in Vishwajeet movies, one finds that the list of truly immortal songs from his movies reads like a whos who of the very best songs of its genre of soft sensuous, romantic songs.

In fact, I once read somewhere that actors like Vishwajeet, Pradeep Kumar etc often got more outstanding songs than many bigger and better stars of that era just because they happen to act in movies with Hemant Kumar’s music.

This is certainly true for Vishwajeet in this movie called “Bin Baadal Barsaat”(1963). I have already posted two superb sensuous songs from this movie sung by Hemant Kumar himself. Here is the third such song. This is a duet where Lata joins in.

and the result ? Many people call it the best song of its genre. I do not believe in such labels, but I musyt say that this song is as magical as a song can get. Extemely sensuous, extremely romantic. The singers have done a great job, and Shakeel Badayuni has shown throughout the songs of this movie how precisely and coherently he could capture the feelings of two people in love with each other.

This song was picturised on Vishwajeet and Asha Parekh. It is a magical song indeed.

I had mentioned that “Bin Baadal Barsaat” (1963) had three outstanding sensuous songs sung by Hemant Kumar.

Here is the second such song. Just listen to this song. Hemant Kumar must have been in the zone while recording the songs for this movie. These songs are just out of this world. What a voice and what music ( he himself was the music ditrector). And what about the lyrics? It is the words of Shakeel Badayuni that enable Hemant Kumar to create this sheer magic.

All this while I have not talked about the picturisation. The song is picturised on Vishwajeet and Asha Parekh. I feel that in some way, Hemant Kumar singing for Vishwajeet was akin to Rafi singing for Shammi Kapoor. “Bin Baadal Barsaat”( 1963) has some lovely sensuous songs sung by Hemant Kumar. this particular song is one of them.

The song is picturised on Vishwajeet and Asha Parekh with Asha Parekh wearing her bridal dress and waiting on her “sez” waiting for Vishwajeet.

The lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni are nice, and the music is nice, and the song sung by Hemant Kumar is just out of this world. The way he modulates his voice at some places is just mind boggling.

And there are at least two more songs in this movie where Hemant Kumar has weaved the same magic.

Here is a very typical situation. Boy meets girl. After a few meetings, the boy wants to express his love for her. But he is too shy. How to say it ?

The boy looks for an opportunity to say it, but is tongue tied. The girl is leaving. Now it is a matter of do or die for the boy, and he blurts out- “I have something to tell you.” The girl says- “leave something for the road too.” The boy has to tell her-” I mean I have to tell you something important.” Now the girl, who was playing nonchalant gets a bit queasy as well. What is it that the boy wants to tell her ?

And then the boy blurts out that he loves her. Of course, this being a movie, he blurts it out in the form of this song. And in case he is afraid of rejection, girl’s smile reassures him. As the song progresses, the ice thus broken continues to melt and melt and by the end of the song there is hardly any ice left. And the girl in fact is beside her with joy.

The movie is “Tere ghar ke saamne” and the protagonists in question are Dev Anand and Nutan. The picturisation is simply superb.

All this while, I have not talked about the song itself. The lyrics are just wonderful. The lyricist is obviously a person capable of expressing even the most complex human feelings in a coherent way, and indeed he expresses the feelings of love in a way that leaves the listener gasping with admiration.

In fact, except the first stanza. other stanzas have sentences that do not get repeated and if you miss one sentence, you do not know what was said unless you listen to the song again. It is no problem for a present day listener, but think of those who had to listen to this song on radio or loudspeakers in the olden days. I had to listen to this song four times to get the lyrics right.

And all this while, as I was admiring the lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri, I was feeling full of admiration for Rafi the singer as well as for S D Burman , the music director, as well. This song is not a creation of routinework. It must have taken oodles of creative juices to flow before a masterpiece like this got created.

As is usual with me, I have been discovering many forgotten gems almost on a daily basis as far as bollywood songs are concerned.

Here is a song from “Naag Devta” (1962). Any one has heard of this movie ? Few people will reply in the affirmative with any conviction. There tended to be movies of such names in the C grade Bollywood movie circuit.

As a music director, S N Tripathi was the biggest name for such mythological movies. And every once in a while, his music would transcend the C grade barrier and would begin to compete with the music of A grade movies.

This song certainly looks like a fit candidate to take on the best song of the year 1962, not that it actually happened ( when I look at the Binaca geetmala final list of songs for 1962).

This song is certainly of a very good standard, and I loved this song the very first time I listened to it ( which is just now).

Sung by Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur, who both had the knacks of coming up with very high percentage of hit songs, deliver a winning song.

It is a C grade movie , as mentioned earlier, and the song is picturised on actors like Mahipaal and Anjali Devi, but the song ( lyrics by Bharat Vyas) deserves to be much better known.

“Jaali Note” (1960), by now a forgotten movie had Dev Anand and Madhubala in lead roles. Moreover, it had music by O P Nayyar.

Most of the time, I do not remember more than the first one or two lines of a song, and therefore my appreciation of such songs is not all that indepth.

When I went deep into the lyrics of this song from “Jaal”, my mind kept boggling. The music was nice, and the lyrics were so expressive and so sensuous. One can visualise the setting just by listening to Hemant Kumar’s soothing voice. This is an ideal “Chaayageet” song too, full with words like “Chaand”, “raat” etc.

The song is picturised on a young and dashing looking Dev Anand ( who was then the right age to play a hero) and a pretty Geeta Bali.

This song has a duet version too and now the lyrics of that version too have been provided (thanks to Khyati Bhatt who sent me the lyrics)

“Dastak” was far ahead of its time in 1970 when it was released. Forget 1970, the movie is ahead of its time even if it was released in 2009.

Little wonder that the movie failed to find much of an audience.

Luckily, its music was appreciated by Indian government and this movie got the award for best music in a movie awrd of 1970. It was the only such recognition that Madan Mohan got in his lifetime.

Despite such recognition, public recognition eluded the music of this movie.

Now, albeit belatedly, the music of “Dastak” is receiving rave reviews from knowledgeable listeners.

There are many nice songs in this movie. In fact, this movie is a treasure trove of Lata-Madan Mohan classic songs.

I have already posted two songs from this movie. Here is another superb Lata song from this movie that goes “Bainya na dharo, balma.”. It is a superb composition, as always. And let us not forget th contribution of Majrooh Sultanpuri. It was perhaps the first and last time that Majrooh worked with Madan Mohan, and what superb lyrics he wrote for this movie. “Post Office Box 999″- This was the title of a 1958 movie. And this movie had some superb songs.

Here is a duet sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata. I can find many categories for this song, and moreover I find that it is also a “mental massage” song in the sense that one gets refreshed after listening to this song.
P L santoshi is thelyricist whereas Kalyanji Anandji, then newcomers, have composed the music.

Picturisation is quite sensuous and romantic too which shows Sunil Dutt and Shakeela ( or is it Poornima ?) unable to sleep missing the other.

What a nice picturisation ! The picturisation is something that one can easily identify with.

No wonder this song has gone on to become a timeless classic.

I had not even heard about this 1967 movie called “Aman”. Now I am aware of this movie, mainly because of a song from this movie.

This Rafi song “aaj ki rat ye kaisi raat” is a beautifully sung romantic song. The sensuousness of the voice can be experienced by the listener even if one has not watched the video.

The picturisation shows Rajendra kumar in the mood of making some pillow talk with Saira Bano. Sira bano who utters a few words in a shrill voice, thus gets credited as having “sung” this song with Rafi.

In this Rajendra Kumar complains of sleeplessness, and in the end of the song, he falls asleep. That way, this must be the first lori in Bollywood that is meant to put a grown up to sleep. And also this becomes a rare lori where the lori singer himself goes to sleep as he sings it. How very remarkable of Bollywood movie makers to think of such an original idea.

Here is yet another Rafi-Shammi Kapoor song which is sung and picturised with the same passion which we have come to associate with such songs. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan are the music director, as was the case in majority of such songs.

Sadhana is also there in the picturisation, and she does not get to sing in the song. The picturisation of a solo song on a pair of actors is always interesting to watch. The person who is supposed to keep quite in the song always needs to communicate with his/her body language in such songs. In case it is a lady who needs to keep quite is required to blush, fidget, get annoyed, get mollified etc as the song progresses. And watching her expression in this song is just as much fun as watching the hero, our irrepressible Shammi Kapoor.

When I first saw the video of this song, I was scandalised. Then I realised that Vyjyantimala was in fact wearing body coloured clothes, but still her dress must have been regarded as provocative by the censors those days. Or may be not, seeing that few people thronged to watch this movie.

The song is a semi classical song. And as happens with semi classical songs and dances, majority of spectators keep away. But as far as aficionadoes are concerned, this song is quite a fesat to the ears. One can keep listenng away to this song many a times. It was one of the last songs that Shailendra- Shankar Jaikishan combination must have created.

The songs of “Anamika” (1973) were so nice to listen to. The lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri and music of R D Burman were top notch and the singers, viz. Kishore Kumar and Lata had sung the songs wonderfully.

This song “baahon me chale aao” is a sensuous song, which one typically associates with Asha Bhonsle, but it has been sung by Lata, and she has sung it so nicely.

And moreover, this song is picturised not on Helen, but on the homely girl next door Jaya Bhaduri. Surprises never cease, do they ?

It is a very nicely picturised song on Jaya Bhaduri and Sanjeev Kumar.

I have posted many songs of Rafi in this blog, and in each song I have raved about his voice. In fact one cannot help but remark on his voice quality whatever the song. In every song, he appered to give his very best.

Is it possible to better the very best. Well, it appears so to me in this case. Just listen to this song “dil jo na kah saka” from “Bheegi raat”. What remarkable singing !

Also, what superb lyrics by Majrooh. And amazing music of Roshan. This song is quite something. If you are in the right mood, then you cannot have enough of this song.

This song is picturised on Pradeep Kumar in the movie.

The same song is also sung separately by Lata for Meena Kumari. The picturisation of this female version is done very sensuously. And I include the female version of this song too here, mainly for its picturisation quality.

This is one song where both male and female version are awesome, just awesome. Let us not compare the two and try to pull down one to prove the superiority of the other.

It is an incredibly romantic and sensuous song. And all this effect is created thanks to the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. And the lyrics by Shailendra are incredibly imaginative. Shankar Jaikishan’s music is awesome of course.

Shammi Kapoor indeed had audiences eating out of his hands those days, and here he is seen with Sharmila Tagore. This song could almost serve as an anthem for a couple feeling especially romantic. And the backdrop showing landmarks of Paris can only enhance those feelings.
