From the time I first heard this Christmas song several years ago, I have been captivated by it

From the time I first heard this Christmas song several years ago, I have been captivated by it’s haunting melody, lilting harmonies, and the passionate way it is sung. It is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. And the powers of the song is in the fact that even not being able to understand the words, the message comes through.

The cinematography shows all sorts of symbols having to do with the life and death of our Lord: bread, the cross, the birth narrative, Mary, on and on the story is told in image, sound, and words.

I know it has to do with the Savior being born, but I do not have the exact English translation. Someone once sent me a translation, but I do not know where it is right now. Perhaps someone will come across this post and be kind enough to enlighten those of us for whom this beautiful language is beyond our grasp.

Please enjoy this Christmas song.

Christ is born!

When I arrived at Buffalo State College for the first time in January of 1994, I didn’t know w

When I arrived at Buffalo State College for the first time in January of 1994, I didn’t know what to expect from higher education. I pictured professors in old-fashioned suits, with matching old-fashioned bowties, speaking in English accents about the zeniths of the human intellect, ranging over the riches of antiquity, Shakespeare, and Thomas Mann in lectures that were high-minded, free-wheeling, and letter-perfect.

And somehow, that is just what I got.

Dr. George Vid Tomashevich — who exhibited all these fine and unlikely qualities — was my first college professor. He passed away this week at his home, far away from Buffalo, in California, at the age of 82. Dr. Tomashevich was a Serb, born in Yugoslavia, who acquired the Queen’s English and half a dozen other languages, graduated in Chicago among a historic class, and taught cultural anthropology at Buffalo State from 1968 until 1995.

That first semester as I scoured the course directory, the title of his class caught my eye. “ANT 382: Religion, Myth, and Magic.” Although I was an English major, I registered for the upper-level Anthropology class without hesitation. Wisdom is wisdom, I thought. And besides, college is about experimentation (I also, inexplicably, took a Dance Appreciation class that semester; I picked classes like people watch cable.)

The class lived up to its (to me) provocative title. Psychology and history, religion and science, all were equally dear and familiar to Dr. Tomashevich, and in his lectures the learned gentleman moved among the disciplines with ease, using each to deepen, not discredit, the others. In his lessons he presented a vision of a whole, unsplintered humanity. There was no feminism, no Marxism, no post-colonialism, and certainly no deconstruction. Only one gifted mind’s synthesis of every noble idea to which it had ever been drawn. He took the term “anthropology” — the study of man — literally, with no further quibbling on the matter. Dr. Tomashevich was “multidisciplinary” before it was a buzzword. In spite of this, he was tarred as “old-fashioned” by some colleagues. It is not unfair to say the criticism stuck in his craw. In the semester’s last few classes, he began to detour from his lectures to rail against those who, he claimed, were pressuring him to retire. One evening an observer sat in on the class, a plump young lady with a notepad.

On another, happier evening Dr. Tomashevich, the old Serbian gentleman, extemporaneously conjugated Hungarian verbs to amaze my Hungarian girlfriend during our coffee break, a good-natured sparkle in his eye. The following week during the same break he pulled me aside, and complimented me on the “charming young lady” I had brought to class.

I started teaching this semester at Buffalo State — a class in my native discipline of English. The sky is big and dark early, as it was during those first weeks of 1994. My class happens to be in the same building as Dr. Tomashevich’s night class, so tonight I clambered down the steel steps to his old room on the first floor. It’s almost 6 p.m.; the room is locked and dark. Although there is no one in the hall, the still-fragrant cardboard remains of a pizza party are piled on top of a nearby garbage can. I peer through the narrow window on the door. In the gloom, I can see the desks are new, in a new, seemingly arbitrary configuration. I remember him gingerly transplanting his yellowing transparencies on and off of the overhead projector as he patiently meted out to us the perfected fruits of a lifetime spent learning and comparing, thinking and researching. Tonight the only light in the room is from the Dell PC that sits on a cart, a confusion of cables erupting from its side, the Buffalo State logo sailing across its monitor from corner to corner.

Dolma, dolmadakia, dolmasi, in whatever language, add something different and delicious to the table

Dolma, dolmadakia, dolmasi, in whatever language, add something different and delicious to the table. We know them as stuffed grape leaves, but dolma–”stuffed thing” from the Turkish–is basically a stuffed vegetable dish that can be found in the countries that belonged to the Ottoman Empire and surrounding regions, including many Arab countries, Iran and the Caucasus, as well as Central and South Asia. It is common to stuff eggplant, zucchini, tomato and pepper in these countries, but it is the grape leaf that most English-speaking people recognize as the dolma.

The filling consists of rice and sometimes meat, depending on the region, and is flavored with onion and a variety of herbs and spices. Which herbs and spices? Again, that depends on the region.

Serbian-style dolma are called sarmice, which always confused me because the word sounds like a diminutive of sarma, the cabbage roll that is ubiquitous in Eastern Eauropean cuisines. However, both dishes involve minced meat and rice encased in an edible wrapper. Cabbage rolls are cooked in a sauce spiced with sweet paprika, and in Serbia stuffed grape leaves can be too, although bechamel is also a common adornment. I like them plain, with a dollop of strained yogurt doctored with a bit of lemon.

The filling is cooked beforehand, and it takes a bit of time to fill the leaves, but these sarmice are easy to make and are a great as an appetizer or a complete meal. I usually make a big pot and then freeze any leftovers in individual containers for a quick lunch.

Serbian-style Stuffed Grape Leaves

Ingredients:

Makes 20 stuffed grape leaves

40 grape leaves (from a jar)

1 pounds of lean ground pork

1 cup white rice

1 medium onion, minced

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

2 teaspoons Vegeta seasoning *

1 tablespoon chopped parsley

Directions:

1) Soak the grape leaves in water for at least half an hour to get rid of the salt from the brine. In the meantime, cook the onion in the olive oil over medium heat until soft.

2) Cook the rice. In a separate pan, brown the pork until it is cooked through and no longer pink. Put the meat and rice in a large mixing bowl. Add the onions, parsley, an seasonings. Mix thoroughly.

3) As you work, pat each grape leaf on a kitchen towel to get rid of the excess water. Take two grape leaves and trim off any tough stems. Overlap the bottom of one leaf halfway over the bottom of the other. Add a tablespoon or two of the filling, depending on the size of your leaves. Fold in each side of the grape leaves, lengthwise. Then roll up from bottom to top. Place in the bottom of a 9-inch round cooking pot with the folded side down. Repeat with the rest of the grape leaves.

4) Pour water over grape leaves to cover completely. Place a plate on top of the stuffed grape leaves to keep them from floating or unraveling. Cook, covered, for about an hour, or until the water evaporates.

5) Serve with yogurt, sour cream, or bechamel sauce.

* Vegeta is a seasoning from Croatia that can be purchased in most European delis and supermarkets. It can be replaced with salt, to taste.

Watchman, tell us of the night,
What its signs of promise are.
Traveler, o’er yon mountain’s height,
See that glory beaming star.
Watchman, does its beauteous ray
Aught of joy or hope foretell?
Traveler, yes—it brings the day,
Promised day of Israel.

Watchman, tell us of the night;
Higher yet that star ascends.
Traveler, blessedness and light,
Peace and truth its course portends.
Watchman, will its beams alone
Gild the spot that gave them birth?
Traveler, ages are its own;
See, it bursts o’er all the earth.

Watchman, tell us of the night,
For the morning seems to dawn.
Traveler, darkness takes its flight,
Doubt and terror are withdrawn.
Watchman, let thy wanderings cease;
Hie thee to thy quiet home.
Traveler, lo! the Prince of Peace,
Lo! the Son of God is come!

John Bowring [Sir] died this date, 11/23/1872, at Devon, England. His trade/ manufacture was in woolen goods. It was so extensive that it increased his natural abilities in languages. One report has him fluent in over twenty (20) languages and speaking eighty (80) more. Another report would place his speaking skills as high as a hundred (100) languages with a limited knowledge of up to two hundred (200). In either case he had a phenomenal God–given strength and seems could carry on business in following named tongues: Boheman, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish.

He served twice in Parliament, held several high government positions to foreign countries including being the governor of Hong Kong, and was knight by Queen Victoria. In addition to all the worldly fame he had a deep interest in God as the above hymn shows and as his additional twenty (20) some others show. His more famous one is “In the Cross of Christ I Glory” – see 10/17/2009 of this blog.

I learn Serbian for some time. Actually, I wanted to learn every day, but there is always different than planned. But I think my progress is quite well:

Most of the mistakes I make in the accents and of course I still do my typical letter turner. On the Cyrillic spelling I didn’t dare until now. I will try it later.

Foreign languages – Serbian To know and speak several languages, which was always a dream for

Foreign languages – Serbian

To know and speak several languages, which was always a dream for me. But at school it had problems with foreign languages, so I lost my interests. But at Weblin I again found it interested and wants to expand my language skills and enlarge. My English is very much improved. French well … I understand more than I can write.
As I talk with many people from Serbia, I have decided to learn Serbian as 3rd foreign language. Until now I’ve learned the language with my chat friends, but this way is not so easy. That is why I bought at amazon a language course. Serbian-language course from “sprachenlernen24.de”. I will keep you updated about my progress to date.
I also want to still improve my French. And after Serbian, I want to learn Spanish and / or Swedish.
