El soldado desconocido no murió en el campo de batalla. Aún respiraba cuando su cuerpo fue encontrado sobre la arena de las playas de Normandía. Los sanitarios lo trasladaron a un buque hospital pero entre sus pertenencias no fue posible encontrar nada que lo identificara. Carente de mochila, no cargaba con más enseres que un reloj y una carta fechada en 1943 y firmada por su “serena esposa”. Pocas semanas después, al mismo tiempo que la de otros muchos camaradas, su mujer habría de recibir la comunicación oficial de su desaparición.

El soldado desconocido no despertó en pocos días, ni en pocas semanas, ni tan siquiera en pocos meses. Siempre inconsciente, su cuerpo vagó entre barcos y hospitales de la Europa aliada sin que se le conociera alteración del estado ni mejoría palpable. No presentaba, a la luz de los médicos, enfermedad ni herida grave. Ninguna radiografía mostró daños internos y su sangre se mostraba libre de agentes dañinos. Sin embargo, y a pesar de su evidente bienestar, se mantenía en un estado de sueño permanente.

Solo un hecho desmentía la apariencia de placidez que reflejaba de su rostro. Su mano izquierda se cerraba sobre si misma en un puño de irreductible fortaleza. Parecía concentrar en ello toda la fuerza de su cuerpo.

El uniforme que vestía cuando lo encontraron lo identificaba como soldado de infantería norteamericano, así que, a pesar de que su identidad seguía siendo ignota, dos meses después de su caída el soldado desconocido fue acomodado en un barco que trasladaba heridos a su país natal. Allí, nuevos médicos le trataron pero, ya fuera bajo el sol de Florida o frente al lago Michigan, ninguno logró averiguar la causa de su letargo ni el porqué de su crispada mano. Como último recurso, el doctor Irwin requirió la ayuda de su amigo, reportero del New York Times. Éste escribió un hermoso artículo sobre aquel joven encantado que dormía un sueño eterno. Hábilmente entretejidas en el texto se daban las escasas claves de su identidad: la marca del reloj y las referencias a una esposa serena que le esperaba en algún lugar entre el Atlántico y el Pacífico.

Pocos días después, un gran número de mujeres, jóvenes y ancianas, apoyadas en sus maridos o tirando de la mano de sus niños, se presentaron ante la puerta del hospital. A todas ellas les unía un hilo de esperanza. Quizás aquel joven fuera el hijo, el hermano o el marido desaparecido en la guerra cruel. Algunas de ellas gritaban alborozadas o nerviosas por la expectativa, la mayoría se mantenía en un mutismo angustiado por el presentimiento de una nueva decepción. Todas pasaron por la habitación del soldado desconocido y todas admitieron que no era quien buscaban.

Cuando las lágrimas y los sollozos se hubieron marchado y hubo retornado el silencio resignado del hospital, una joven de ropa sencilla y porte majestuoso pidió que la llevaran ante el enfermo. No usó más palabras de las precisas, ni enjuagó sus lágrimas con un pañuelo, tan solo asintió cuando lo reconoció. Pidió, eso sí, que lo acomodaran en una ambulancia y lo trasladaran a su casa. Durante todo el viaje se mantuvo a su lado, asiendo su mano derecha y sin dejar de observar con ternura su apacible respiración.

Durante años la vida de ambos transcurrió en una tranquila rutina. Ella arreglaba vestidos para las vecinas del pueblo y cuidaba un huerto con cuyas verduras subsistía. A cada poco levantaba la vista y observaba al soldado que se mantenía inalterable a una vida que no discurría por él. Una mañana de invierno, alegre por el radiante sol que entraba por la ventana no se contentó con observarle y se acercó a la cama. Dormía, tan plácido como siempre, y su mano cerrada se apoyaba sobre las blancas sábanas. Recordó entonces el ingenuo amor que a ambos les invadía antes de la guerra y a su memoria vino un gesto cariñoso que a él le encantaba. Se agachó y le besó en el cuello, justo bajo su oreja. Cuando se incorporó vio como él pestañeaba, primero pesadamente y luego más rápidamente, hasta que terminó por abrir los ojos. El soldado desconocido miró primero a la mujer y luego se giró reconociendo la habitación. Reparó entonces en su puño y lo relajó, abriendo la mano. Algunos granos de arena se escurrieron entre sus dedos. La mayoría permanecieron apelmazados por la humedad de su piel. Entonces, miró de nuevo a la mujer y recordó:

—Prometí traerte un recuerdo de Francia.

Aunque han pasado algunos episodios entre medias desde el último trailer que os deje, aquí os pongo la promo del siguiente episodio de Gossip Girl que se emitirá el día 30 de noviembre. Corresponde al episodio 11 de tercera temporada y lleva por título “The treasure of  the Serena Madre“.

Sinopsis: Blair sospecha que su madre le ha estado ocultando un gran secreto, que resulta ser algo trascendental. Vanessa tiene planeado pasar Acción De Gracias con su familia, pero tiene una pelea con su madre, y aparece en el portal de la casa de Dan. Rufus descubre que Lily le ha estado mintiendo sobre su madre, Cece. Chuck le cuenta a Nate  que tiene información ampliamente perjudicial sobre uno de sus amigos. Jenny descubre que Eric estaba detrás del bochorno público que le hicieron pasar en el Cotillón, y no deja pasar la oportunidad de vengarse. Serena es sometida a una situación embarazosa cuando Trip y Maureen se unen a ellos en la cena de Acción de Gracias.

In my last article I hinted about investigating the use of an open source tool in support of my current employment.  I won’t go into details about the use case itself but I will gladly describe the tool and its potential.  First, a little background.

The Need

As noted in previous articles, a large part of my work the past several years has been in information management, specifically product and application configuration.  I’ve so far had the pleasure of leading and supporting work on two major enterprise rollouts of workflow solutions, each employing different commercial offerings and approaches to implementation.

The first project addressed a huge gap in product data and change management for consumer products development.  PTC Windchill was selected for the workflow solution based on its own strengths and helped by the fact that PTC product engineering applications were already in use.

The next project at a later employer involved replacing a claims handling application with a true process workflow solution.  Serena Business Mashup (SBM) was selected over competing products due to its rich feature set and seemingly unlimited extensibility.  I found the development environment (Mashup Composer) to be flexible, powerful and intuitive.

Both projects were very successful in streamlining and improving the ability of stakeholders to view end-to-end processes and manage events in their domains.  The commercial products involved proved their value although expenses were certainly significant.

An Open Alternative

In my current employment I am once again faced with the need to improve management of an enterprise activity, except that the prevailing economic decline prevents the sort of corporate funding that had been required for the other two projects.  This led me to search for low cost or even free solutions.

I found several tools that looked promising, but just about every search highlighted one in particular: the open source ProcessMaker.  Glowing write-ups such as this one by Python Developer’s Journal gave the impression that this free tool just might be close enough to WindChill or SBM to significantly improve our change management process.

The Short Take

ProcessMaker is 100% web-based and managed at popular open source hoster SourceForge.  The PM website states that its code “… is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3”.  It is provided in Windows and Linux versions.

I downloaded and installed the latest Windows version (1.2-2865) to my work laptop running XP.  The installation included MySQL and the Apache web server.  The first installation attempt hung up on the Apache portion at the end, but the second try went smoothly.  I’m not sure what happened (or didn’t happen) the first time.

I’ve barely explored what ProcessMaker can do and yet so far I am impressed.  While its mashups have not yet reached the number that one can access for Serena’s offerings, the same potential is there and hopefully the open source community is already at work developing more to be shared.  ProcessMaker supports Web Service Definition Language (WSDL), enabling a process developer to integrate numerous off-the-shelf applications that provide similar access.

The interface is clean and fairly easy to navigate.  However, I could see immediately that I’ll have to read the documentation and/or follow tutorials before being able to develop a useful process model.  Still, by sheer intuition alone I was able to create a new user, associate him with a group, install a sample weather report mashup and run the activity successfully.  This speaks well for the UI design.

I did find some minor but obvious phrasing issues in some areas, possibly reflecting ProcessMaker’s international heritage (Colosa has offices in New York, Bolivia and Peru and partners with a Danish IT firm) but they were not showstoppers.  Indeed, even in my untrained fumbling I did not run into anything that raised any real concerns.

ProcessMaker has recently brought data table creation and management to its set of features, bringing it closer to its commercial peers.  I’m eager to test this particular addition and see how it stacks up against Mashup Composer’s robust equivalent.

Bottom Line

 WindChill was the first purely Internet-architectured data management and collaboration tool, so by now (version 9.1) it’s very mature.  Too much time has passed since I worked with WindChill so I couldn’t do a post mortem justice.  I do recall that it easily handled everything we threw at it and integrated well with our other enterprise systems… SAP, BPCS et al.  It’s strictly a commercial offering.

Serena’s Business Mashup solution certainly has the power to wire together any silos across an enterprise landscape.  Serena has taken a hybrid approach in this space, offering a closed commercial product supported by a growing collection of popular user-developed mashups.

ProcessMaker, however, is completely free and open so that the developer community can create and push upstream additions and improvements not only to mashups but also the core product.  Colosa, the group behind ProcessMaker, charges only for training, hosting and other support.

There’s nothing wrong with PTC’s and Serena’s commercialization of course but lately I’m coming to believe more and more that ProcessMaker’s open mode is that of the future… assuming of course it reaches the critical mass necessary to attract enough mashup developers.  My initial take is that it definitely has the potential.

I plan to continue exploring that potential and expect to do at least one more general follow-up once I’m more familiar with the product… hopefully soon!

Jaa, nå har det seg slik at jeg har blitt syk. IGJEN. Jeg var syk en hel uke for ikke lenge siden, swineflue. Og nå har jeg blitt syk igjen, hva skjer med verden? Immunforsvaret mitt eksisterer ikke og life hates me tror jeg. Denne triste historien startet når vekkerklokken ringte i går morges, og jeg holdt på å bli kvelt fordi jeg ikke klarte å puste! jeg våknet og tenkte wtf, hvorfor klarer jeg ikke puste?? Så åpnet jeg munne og da gikk det jo så klart mye bedre. Altså, jeg var pottetett i nesa. Helt plutselig og uten noen form for forvarsel. Samtidig som denne litt ubehagelige nær-døden-opplevelsen, merket jeg at han som av og til sitter oppi hodet mitt å dunker, hadde invitert alle sine venner og at de hadde party eller noe! De trampet rundt oppi der og lagde et helvetes leven. Jeg trodde hjernen min skulle sprenge! Og sånn fortsatte de å trampe utover dagen, samtidig som at nesa ikke ville fungere som normalt. Så da vi fikk beskjed om at vi fikk de siste fire timene fri/jobbe hjemme jublet jeg av glede og vendte min veldig tette nese hjemover. Etter en alt for lang busstur sovnet jeg tvert på sofaen og våknet opp klokken 5. Ups, 4 og en halv time i drømmeland. Men det var verdt det! Resten av kvelden gikk med til pille-spising og selvmedlidenhet. Egentlig hadde jeg masse lekser å gjøre men jeg fant ut at siden jeg rett og slett ikke orket å gjøre noen verdens ting, fikk jeg heller bli hjemme neste dag. Og her ligger jeg nå, utslått på sofaen med tørkerullen og paraceten fint plassert ved min side. Bikkja holder meg med selskap, det vil si snorker i andre enden av sofaen, og regnet pøser ned ute. Life is a bitch..

This season of Gossip Girl has had it’s share of hits and misses. Transitioning to college is a difficult job for any show to do. You have to figure out how to make the experience believable for television and keep the characters in contact with each other in order to make the plot lines move forward. But I have to ask, why do the outfits have to suffer? On Monday’s episode we were subjected to bad college theater, Hilary Duff trying to sing Lady Gaga, Vanessa in her underpants (blech!), and then a disappointingly short and choppy cameo of Lady Gaga herself singing (but Bad Romance is an awesome song). Even worse was Serena’s descent into the world of political sex scandal as she finally banged Congressman Ken Doll. And she did it in the worst outfit imaginable.

A backless, long sleeved number that clings in all the wrong places and makes her cleavage virtually unnoticeable. Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that Serena’s chest was popping? Adorning the top is a lovely chain link section of fence, fashioned into what looks like a very uncomfortable necklace. Holy hell, those look like shoulder pads. But wait, the horrors continue where she pairs this top with red tights that appear to have snake pattern on them. And the coat was a cropped pea coat number with actual coattails. Her hair wasn’t much better, pulled back in a tight twisted braid. Serena has amazing hair, let it flow and bounce, dammit! I never thought I’d see the day where Lady Gaga appeared on something in which she was best dressed. But props to Blair for pulling off the all black theater look.

En una habitación oscura frente a la ventana una persona se gira sobresaltada por el brusco quiebro del silencio. Me mira, me procesa, y su rostro recupera la expresión de tranquilidad con la que se había vuelto. Los ojos le brillan, a penas es lo único que se distingue a la luz de la luna que atraviesa el polvoriento cristal.

Es un joven alto y delgado, de piel brillante y oscura bajo la noche. El cuello crece con fuerza sobre una espalda ancha. La camiseta holgada le cubre hasta media pierna, de donde salen unos bombachos de tela fina.

Ahí está, observando, sin decir nada, en pleno trance hipnótico, meditando. Tras la ventana, algun coche abandonado, y más allá, el desierto. La arena lo cubre todo, alguna roca, alguna planta muerta, y al fondo, en el horizonte, presidiendo el pobre paisaje, una hilera de imponentes y majestuosas montañas.

El joven observaba con tanta fascinación que parecía que nada conseguiría rescatarle de su ensimismamiento, ahora compartido con el espíritu de la noche… Algo había abandonado su cuerpo que ahora vaga libre allá donde a sus pies no les está permitido acceder. Su alma, un sueño en blanco que cada día, cada noche, frente a la ventana, se nutre de esperanza, de añoranza, que transforma el rencor y el odio en paz serena, en una calma sosegada y amable… Un sueño que recuerda cosas no vividas, que rescata de la mente hechos no ocurridos, producto de una tendencia, de una espera. Un futuro que desea, que aguarda tras la ventana que cada día visita, tras las montañas, tras su actual vida… El joven sigue ahí, fijo en su mirada, clavado ante el respeto que le causa el abismo en el que se encuentra, fortaleza y debilidad se unen para derrotar el alma luchadora de un ser confuso y abandonado en tierra de nadie, en una idea insostenible, en un futuro inexistente, inalcanzable, una vida imposible en un lugar desértico, eterno y maldito.

Already seen the new series on FOX? Glee is about a Spanish teacher who tries to reform the Glee Club to it’s former glory. Emma Pillsbury is a teacher on the same school, she has enormous eyes, a sweet personality and is a mysophobic. After watching the first six episodes I couldn’t help it to see some similarities between Emma Pillsbury and Blair Waldorf (Gossip Girl). Although Emma isn’t about the brands, since the whole Glee series isn’t about fashion or the upper east side of Manhattan there were just a few things that reminded me of Blair, the girl she was in the 1st season of Gossip Girl. And no, I’m not suggesting that Glee copied the whole Blair look. I just wanted to tell ya’ll.

Glee’s first season airs on Wednesdays 9/8 C on FOX .

Gossip Girl’s third season airs on Mondays 9/8 C on the CW.
