Dear Prime Minister Harper,

Thank you very much for taking the time to read my letter. I’m a Canadian citizen. I partly want to address your statement about Canada not having a history of colonialism, but the contents of my letter go beyond this topic. I understand that a lot of letters pass through your office, so I have put a lot of thought into the content of this letter.

In addition to the issue of Canada’s aboriginals who are undoubtedly upset by this comment, I would like to point out another issue that I have not seen raised as often.

As we know, your comment was made in the context of the G20 conference where much of the discussion involved the topic of international trade. It’s clear to me that several Canadian mining companies are operating in economically underdeveloped countries around the world, and are doing so in a way that is unmonitored by us in Canada. These operations are often carried out under the pretext that they bring economic development to poor regions of the world, which is in part true. However, at the same time there is the implicit assumption that the countries where these operations are occurring are sufficiently developed to be able to deal with the dangers to life and health and human rights that are brought about by these activities.

In the interest of keeping this letter short, I won’t give a long list of examples. One example that comes to mind due to its immediate urgency is the North Mara mine in Tanzania. This mine, which is operated by Barrick Gold Corporation with headquarters in Toronto, has been accused of spilling toxic chemicals into a river that supports people, their livestock, and wildlife. The North Mara mine is expected to increase production this year. I don’t understand how we in Canada could allow companies such as Barrick Gold to continue to operate unmonitored while such a reality exists. Certainly such a thing would never be allowed to occur in Canada.

I would like to bring attention to the fourteenth report of The Canadian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade which unequivocally states that “more must be done to ensure that Canadian companies have the necessary knowledge, support and incentives to conduct their activities in a socially and environmentally responsible manner and in conformity with international human rights standard.”

In addition, the Committee urged our government to “establish clear legal norms in Canada to ensure that Canadian companies and residents are held accountable when there is evidence of environmental and/or human rights violations associated with the activities of Canadian mining companies.”

As such, I would like to respectfully recommend a retraction of the colonialism statement that has caused so much controversy. I would also like to request the acknowledgement of two important realities: 1) that Canada has a history of colonialism that has impacted and is continuing to impact our own aboriginal population; and 2) that Canada is currently allowing companies, that are based in Canada, to operate abroad in a manner that is endangering human life, human health and human rights.

Again, thank you very much for taking the time to read my letter. I understand that you and the people in your office are very busy, so if you can find the time to respond I would be extremely grateful.

—————————————————————

What follows is the reply that I received from the Prime Minister’s office. I didn’t have the foresight to inform them that I may decide to post their reply on the internet. However, given that their response is very similar to public statements that I have seen made by them about the colonialism comment, I decided that the fairest thing was for their point of view to be presented here.

On behalf of the Prime Minister, thank you for your recent correspondence regarding statements made by the Prime Minister at the G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh, and your concerns over the international operations of Canadian mining companies. We are pleased to have this opportunity to respond.

The Prime Minister’s remarks at the G-20 concerning “colonialism” were in regard to Canada’s history in foreign relations and were clearly understood as such by those that were present. The marginalization, mistreatment and racism towards Aboriginal people in the context of Canada’s domestic history, including colonialism within Canada, has never been denied or minimized by our government.

This past June marked the first anniversary of the Prime Minister’s formal apology to former students of Indian Residential Schools. We recognize that while the formal apology put all Canadians, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, on the road to reconciliation together, there is still a long journey ahead. We are moving forward with implementation of the Indian Residential Schools Agreement and have established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to document that sad chapter in our history and help chart a new course of reconciliation.

Our Government has taken real and tangible actions to come to terms with Canada’s past treatment of our indigenous people. We look forward to building on this progress, and continuing to work together to better the lives of Aboriginal people throughout Canada.

With regard to Canadian mining companies, we have taken the liberty of forwarding a copy of your correspondence to the office of the Hon. Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs. His office is in the best position to respond to the concerns you have raised.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write.

I was of course happy to receive a reply acknowledging the negative impact that history has had on Canada’s aboriginal people. Dear Prime Minister Stephen Harper:

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my letter. Let me start by saying that I’m very happy to be a citizen of a country where we are able to engage in open and free dialogue with our government and to make our concerns heard.

Thank you also for taking the time to pass my concerns on to our Minister of Foreign Affairs. A month has passed since your office sent my message to the Hon. Lawrence Cannon. I have not heard from his office. As such, I feel that the concerns that I expressed regarding the international operations of Canadian mining companies were not addressed. I understand that both of your offices deal with a lot of correspondence, and I understand that the work that you are doing is important, so I have put a lot of thought into what I am writing, and I am writing to you only because I consider my concern to be an important one.

We are in agreement that your statements at the G20 summit were made in the context of foreign relations. Let me remind you of what statement it is that I’m referring to. The press quoted you as having said the following: “We also have no history of colonialism. So we have all of the things that many people admire about the great powers but none of the things that threaten or bother them.” [1] In my previous letter, I mentioned the Fourteenth Report of The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade [2] where it’s stated that “mining activities in some developing countries have had adverse effects on local communities, especially where regulations governing the mining sector and its impact on the economic and social well-being of employees and local residents, as well as on the environment, are weak or non-existent, or where they are not enforced.” Given this observation, I believe that the statement that you are quoted as having made at the G20 summit is false. From the conclusions that were given in this report, it is clear that companies with headquarters in Canada are being allowed to operate in a way that does threaten and bother people. We all say things that we later regret, or that come out differently from how we intend, so my interest is not to dwell on something that you have said. Instead, I would like to take this opportunity to bring awareness to the issues that the Committee has addressed, in the hope that we can fix the problems that their report has brought attention to.

In my previous letter, I provided the example of the North Mara mine that is run by Barrick Gold Corporation with headquarters in Toronto. This mine is located near Serengeti National Park in Northern Tanzania [3] and has been widely accused of poisoning people, livestock and wildlife following a spill of toxic chemicals from a mine that is expected to increase production in the coming year [4]. I also pointed out that I was aware of other issues, but did not discuss them in the interest of keeping my letter short.

I would like to now provide another example. About twelve kilometers outside of the highly-populated city of San Luis Potosí in Mexico, New Gold Inc., with headquarters in Vancouver, has been involved in a project that entails the demolition of the small mountain of Cerro de San Pedro [5]. Metric tonnes of explosive and sodium cyanide have been used daily in order to leach out silver and gold from the demolished remains of this mountain. If the project were to continue to completion, a crater measuring approximately a kilometer in width and 250 meters in depth is what would remain of Cerro de San Pedro, along with some heaps of waste and demolished rock that may pose a toxic hazard to the surrounding community.

For a moment, let’s pretend that it could be considered reasonable to allow a dangerous operation such as this one to be carried out a few kilometers away from a heavily populated area, in a country that’s known to be afflicted by corruption, unmonitored by us. Let’s also assume that, if something were to go awry, the safety of the people of San Luis Potosí would be considered to be more important than the uninterrupted operation of the mine. It would still be essential to consider that the demolished mountain is a site of important historical and cultural significance, and that explosions have been taking place only dozens of meters away from a centuries-old church.

San Luis Potosí itself is a very beautiful city of important historical and cultural significance. UNESCO hosts on its website a list of sites that signatory countries of their World Heritage Convention, countries such as for example Canada and Mexico, hope will be nominated for inclusion in UNESCO’s List of World Heritage sites. Mexico’s list has an item pertaining specifically to San Luis Potosí in which the mountain of Cerro de San Pedro is mentioned as being the genesis of this historical city [6]. On the coat of arms of San Luis Potosí, their patron saint, King Louis IX of France, is shown standing atop Cerro de San Pedro. This coat of arms was given to the people of San Luis Potosí by Viceroy Francisco Fernández de la Cueva, Duke of Albuquerque, at the time that San Luis Potosí was officially granted the title of City in 1656 [7]. I hope therefore you will agree that Cerro de San Pedro is of very important historical and cultural significance to the people of Mexico. Imagine for a moment how Canadians would feel if a foreign entity, motivated by profit, were to arrive in Canada and to obliterate an equivalent cultural landmark. Fortunately, the most recent news of this project is that it is in the process of being shut down by the Mexican authorities, although cyanide leaching operations are still continuing and the small mountain of Cerro de San Pedro has for the most part been destroyed [8]. If we in Canada had been more watchful, it would not have been necessary for things to go so far before the mine was shut down. It would have even been possible to prevent the project from going forward at all.

I would therefore like to ask you, our Prime Minister, if you would consider fixing this situation. Do people feel bothered or threatened when their sources of water are contaminated by toxic waste, or when a historical symbol that supports their patron saint on their coat of arms is demolished, soaked over a period of years in highly toxic substances, and replaced by an enormous crater and piles of rubble, a few kilometers outside of a city inhabited by a million people? Do you think that the reputation of Canadians around the world might not be affected by activities such as these? Please consider fixing the problems outlined in the Fourteenth Report of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. For your convenience, I’m providing the following assertions that have been extracted from this report:

The Government of Canada has a stated commitment to corporate social responsibility standards and international human rights norms.

Canada does not yet have laws to ensure that the activities of Canadian mining companies in developing countries conform to human rights standards.

It’s important for us to be clear that Canadians do indeed believe in social responsibility and human rights, and that we value the environment that we live in and care about other people’s cultural heritage.

Let me close by pointing out that it does not make sense for us to argue in favour of hazardous operations such as the ones that I’ve discussed as a way of bringing economic growth to poor regions of the world while simultaneously implying that the countries where the operations are occurring are sufficiently developed to be able to handle the challenges of these operations on their own. Furthermore, how can we argue that we can bring forward a positive example by doing trade with countries that are struggling with corruption if we then allow our own companies to engage at their own discretion in harmful practices in these same countries? I do not believe that the mining business is inherently bad. There are obviously very many good, honest, hard-working people who are involved in the mining sector. But hoping to navigate by chance the difficulties that these activities present is a very serious mistake.

Thank you very much for reading my letter and for hearing my concerns. I will be sharing the contents of my letters as well as the contents of your reply with fellow Canadians and with other people who care about and are affected by the issues that I have addressed in this letter.
Who They Are

Nomad Tanzania is a small owner-run safari company, based just outside Arusha. It has an eclectic mix of luxury camps spread across the country. Greystoke Mahale, at the foot of the Mahale Mountains and on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, is a fantastic base from which to view chimpanzees and enjoy the clear blue waters of the lake. Chada Katavi is miles from anywhere in wildest Tanzania. Nduara Loliondo is a mobile camp that moves its African-style yurts across the Loliondo area of the Serengeti Eco-system to wherever the best game viewing can be found. The Serengeti Safari Camp moves around another part of the Serengeti.

Ndura Loliondo Under the Stars

Accommodation at Sand Rivers Selous is in spacious open-fronted cottages made of stone and thatch, raised up on the banks of the Rufiji with amazing views out across the river. The new Kiba Point camp, four cottages above the river, is for exclusive use. Nomad also manages Vamizi Island in Mozambique.

What They Are Doing

When Nomad Tanzania was created in 2003, bringing the above camps under one umbrella, it committed to support three trusts that had already been established by the founders of the companies that made up the new Nomad Tanzania. These trusts related to the areas in which the individual companies were operating and were all born organically as a result of continual contact with the issues in the different areas. The Nomad Trust now provides administrative and fund raising-support for the following affiliated trusts, and is a totally non-profit making organization. Nomad Tanzania contributes $3 per camp bednight to the trust. Any funds given to the individual projects are entirely committed to them.

Conservation

The Selous Rhino Trust works to secure the safety of the handful of endangered rhino left in this area (down from 3,000 in the 1970s). A team of 12 rangers and a rhino specialist are based here working together with the Wildlife Division of the Tanzanian government.

Community

Nomad Tanzania also works closely with communities in the Loliondo area, specifically Ololosokwan and Piyaya, two villages it has had close ties with for a number of years. Through donations and company contributions, it has targeted education as one of the prime areas where a difference can be made. In addition, in partnership with Piyaya village, it has contributed fifty percent of the Women’s Home Industry Fund, which loans money to women to help them start up a self-sufficient home industry of their choice. It helps the MIMAMPI honey-gathering project, which has helped reduce hunting in the Katavi and Rukwa areas. In Ololosokwan, it has purchased over $1,000 worth of school books and kept the school Landcruiser rolling with mechanical input and spares. Along with other stakeholders who operate in the area, the camping fees that guests at Nomad’s safari camps pay go to the fund, which so far has helped to send over 70 children to secondary school.

Black Rhino, Endangered Especially in the Selous

The Tongwe Trust, founded officially in 2006, supports community-based projects throughout Tongwe land, from Village Forest Reserves of extraordinary biodiversity in western Tanzania, to boat building and eco-tourism, to schools, dispensaries and village microenterprise. The trust is also collecting an invaluable archive of Tongwe folklore, herbal medicine, and music.

In 2008, Nomad became the first company in the country to have a complete carbon footprint audit done on all its camps and offices.

When I was a child any mention of Africa conjured up images of ostriches, zebra, wild elephants and vast expanses of savannah. My dad took me to watch the documentary, Beautiful People, which further fuelled my fantasies of Africa. During my teens, I was addicted to the adventures of Tarzan the Ape Man, a magnificent creation of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Later, movies like Gods Must Be Crazy and George of the Jungle cemented my illusions.

Those days, I never realized that Africa was undergoing a humanitarian and environmental crisis. The Africa of my imagination, the exotic Africa, existed only in a handful of wildlife reserves like Masai Mara, Serengeti or Kalahari Desert. The rest was in shambles. Africa, once the cradle of man was now his graveyard. What happened in Africa ages ago, the evolution of man, transformed life on the planet. The dark continent, now lie bleeding at the altar of our indifference. What we witness now in Africa, in my opinion, is a bleak prognostication on the future of the world.

Global recession and escalating food prices have dried up food aid to Africa. Recurring droughts have depleted water resources, withered crops and decimated livestock leaving people hungry and severely malnourished. The stark images of Africa, especially those of photojournalist Kevin Carter who committed suicide unable to face the horrors, are heartrending.

Although my phantasmagoric images of Africa are shattered, although I am not able to contribute much to alleviate its troubles, the appreciation and admiration I feel for those who have been waging a relentless battle against the pervasive despair and starvation in Africa is boundless. I recently came across an article on Dr André Briend, the French pediatric nutritionist who developed Plumpy’nut, a inexpensive peanut based fortified food which can be fed to severely malnourished children. Plumpy’nut, packed with vital nutrients does not require addition of water making it ideal for Africa where clean water is scarce. Another noticeable innovation which addressed Africa’s potable water scarcity was LifeSraw, a portable plastic straw designed by Torben Vestergaard Frandsen which made contaminated water drinkable through effective and instant bacteria removal.

Josette Sheeran, head of the United Nation’s World Food Programme remarked that “the know-how, the tools and the technology to feed the world” is already available. All we need is an acknowledgement of the plight and a desire to mitigate it. To me Africa is a mirror in which each of us shall soon see ourselves if we continue to callously ignore its predicaments.

1) Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls) 3.5 Stars

Pro:

intriguing political atmosphere and its effect on the people

Many action packed activities: Walking with lions, riding elephants, the infamous bungee jump, Gorge jumping

Enjoyed the hippy dive bar I went to

Con:

Victoria Falls did not live up to its name (atleast in May)… I like Niagra

Activities are high priced

2) Zambia (Zambezi River) 2 Stars

Pro:

Campsite on Zambezi River was beautiful

I love monkeys and there were thousands everywhere, also animals invade your campsite.. ever see the book “Monkey Portraits” (LOVE IT!)

Con:

lack luster overall

3) Malawi 4 Stars – Personal Favorite

Pro:

the reason it is my favorite is not because it is the best but because it involved connecting with the culture and the people

People in Malawi are very friendly and happy even though they are the poorest (makes you open your eyes ALOT)

The Area is beautiful, very lush, very relaxed and most of Malawi is on Lake Malawi

4) Tanzania 3.5 Stars

Pro:

All about safaris, and Masaii Mara culture, Snake Park is a must campsite

Ngorongoro crater is absolutely the most amazing spectacle in nature

Con:

Serengeti was lack luster, in fact null luster (but only because of bad timing… MAKE SURE TO GO ON SAFARI WHEN THE MIGRATION IS THERE BEFORE YOU SPEND $400

5) Zanzibar 5 Stars

Pro:

An island in the Indian Ocean almost speaks for itself. All Day Snorkeling, boating and huge lunch was well worth the $10?!?!? what

GO TO KENDWA ROCKS BAR ON HE NORTH SHORE AND DON”T FORGET THE MARKET ON THE SOUTH PART

It is not just an Island, it has sooo much culture, history, and don’t forget to take a Spice Tour… well worth it!

6) Nairobi, Kenya 3 Stars

Pro:

It is Nairobi, you must say that you have been there

You are instantly a celebrity if you are White. I felt like Britney Spears (maybe not a pro)

Con:

People Stalk you and hassle you

It is not particularly safe

Sites are nothing spectucular, unless you go kiss a Giraffe like me look at my travel page

7) Masai Mara (mostly Kenya) 4.5 Stars

Pro:

The GREAT MIGRATION WAS HERE…. sort of. Not in full force but it was here.

Felt like I was on the National geographic, scouting around… Kenya has more liberal laws about driving right up on animals

The Masaii Mara culture is interesting. From circumsizing girls/boys to killing lions for manhood.

If you would like to see pictures check out my Flickr or you can facebook friend me (let me know who you are and why you are adding me!!!) And as always, leave comments and feel free to ask questions.

Rewind, November 10, 8 p.m.: arriving at the Conrad Hotel, surprise surprise, it’s crowded in front of the Young Gallery. My first opening in Brussels, course Nick Brandt is a star. Ok, I make my way through peolpe to get in the gallery: “Excuse me, are you a press officer?“. And I find myself in front of a press photographer’s camera of the opening. I cheese and catch my kind gallery officer: “Well, I’d like to make an interview of Nick Brandt, the photographer“, “Oh! He’s…mmmh around. He’s got a jacket with inscriptions on his back“. Good…”And what does he look like?“, “My height, not really tall“, “Thanks!“. Perplexed. An amused look at the moving crowd: how locating in half light an inscription on jacket’s back? Fantastic pictures (big crush on the elephants ones) and great gallery’s atmosphere: I quickly forget the interview for those snapshots! Enjoy!

An eight day safari and gorilla safari, where you will experience the wildlife of the Savanna Plains and the endangered mountain gorillas of Rwanda.

A fascinating safari and a unique opportunity to experience the wildlife of the savannah plains and the endangered mountain gorillas of Rwanda! Your safari starts in the town of Arusha from which you transfer out over the savannah plains to Lions of Lobo Luxury Tented Camp. Lions of Lobo provides the perfect blend of comfort and adventure as you spend the next few days in the middle of one of the most famous wildlife parks in Africa. Looked after by our highly trained staff the camp location offers you access to some of the best wildlife viewing areas of the Serengeti.

From here you fly via Mwanza (to clear immigration) and onwards to Kigali, Rwanda. Met upon arrival by your driver/guide you then transfer through the land of a thousand hills to the accommodation of your choice. The next two days are spent tracking the endangered mountain gorillas through the mist shrouded mountains of the Virunga Volcanoes. Coming across the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is truly the experience of a lifetime; being only a few metres from a 175kg silverback gorilla is an awe inspiring moment and a life changing experience.

Author Sian Hall offers her own insights through her extensive study on Africa, the history, the peo

Author Sian Hall offers her own insights through her extensive study on Africa, the history, the people, the land and the African dogs in her book, “The Dogs of Africa”.

Dogs fit in extremely well with ancient nomadic lifestyles, where great distances were covered in search of game. The dog was involved in the family group and regarded as a permanent member of the camp, vital in driving the herds, guarding the camp and an aid in the hunt. This effect is very evident in some of the African dogs. The Rhodesian Ridgeback, a descendent of the nomadic Khoi dog, regards people as much more important than property. Unlike working breeds, the Ridgeback guards territory because it belongs to his family, not simply because he is territorial.

In contrast, the Canaan Dog of Israel, also from nomadic ancestry, behaves with very different standards. This breed is under the impression that the territory belongs to him together with all the moveable property and humans that come with it. He guards the humans simply because they come with the property. The Canaan Dog also has the ability to turn from domesticated to wild, or vice versa, as the situation dictates, offering him the greater opportunity of returning to the wilds if his home situation in the Bedouin camps became too miserable.

The indigenous Southern Dogs of Africa, with their loyal disposition, will not leave their domestic setting and owner no matter how horribly treated. In between, are the dogs of the Bantu-speakers. For these dogs, their home ground and property is defended, no matter who inhabits the settlement.

Further south, in the arid searing sands of the Kalahari regions, the egalitarian Bushmen of Africa included their dogs in the Zhavo relationship of gift-sharing. Dogs were warmly welcomed to share the food with their owners around the campfire. Whatever was available in camp was shared equally among members – if the dog’s owners were well fed, so was the dog. The reverse held true as well. When the Bushmen came upon hard times, the dog would suffer just as a member of the band.

The lifestyle of the Bushmen included myths and legends that read like fairy-tales, many featuring animals thought to be people and vice versa. An ideology that helps explain why the dogs of the Bushmen were so well kept and highly integrated into their society. The Bushmen saw a world in which animals lived side by side with humans and other creatures, a world in which there were no class distinctions and all creatures were important in the eye of the maker.

The Dogs of Africa provides a detailed examination of dog breeds that have historic connections to the African continent: the Southern African Dogs, Basenji, Canaan Dog, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Azawakh, Sloughi, Podenco Canario, Cirneco Dell’Etna, Pharaoh Hound, Ibizan Hound, Presa Canario, Boerboel, Bichon family, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Coton De Tulear, and the Maltese Poodle. Hall paints vivid word pictures of the physical, cultural and historical environments in which these dogs of Africa evolved. She weaves a breathtaking journey through the vast Serengeti, the searing arid deserts, the towering pyramids of Egypt, the granite boulders of the Zimbabwe and the dense, impenetrable jungles. Find the book at Alpine Publications (www.alpinepub.com).

edit* Skobac has a good point. Check out a few of the songs via the Myspace Playlist page. I’ve got the tracks in there for you.

Here is what I’m listening to today. This playlist has me in such a good mood, nothing can stop me right now. You might have seen a few of these tracks in my earlier posts, so if you haven’t checked them out then, you might as well now. Sure there are more I can tack on but this is already a pretty hefty list. COME ON BLUE FALCON!

Album art for today: Fat Jon – Repaint Tomorrow.

Sir Jon…a winrar is you.

Protip: Tranquilizer is my new song of the moment. I’ve enjoyed it since the first time I heard it. On the train to work today, the song just reach a new level of magnificence. Really give that one a listen. The pacing is fantastic, but the last minute of the song is pure genius. You might not notice it while listening, but he builds to that point the entire time, and once he lets go with the drums and bongos, you’re truly in another world, if only for a short period of time, it’s totally worth it.

I was looking through my pictures for something that I could use for a header for the Blog site. Mo

I was looking through my pictures for something that I could use for a header for the Blog site. Most of the pictures were of vacations past and although eating out in exotic locations is top on my list of things to do, they really didn’t seem to be appropriate for what I was looking for. Then I ran into the one that I finally chose.

A few years ago I decided to go on a Safari. The trip started with some recovery time for the flight on the island of Zanzibar, then a week in Kenya and another week in Tanzania. It was a life changing trip. The vastness is unexplainable if you have never been. Coinciding with the wildebeest migration we decided to take a balloon ride over the Serengeti. The picture on the header is of the table being set up after the flight was over.

All Balloon rides start the same way. You have to get up even before the crack of dawn! I didn’t realize that the main reason for this was that so you could have some control over the balloon. Hot air rises so to able to float, the air in the balloon has to be warmer than the outside temperatures. Therefore if you want to go up, you have to get up before it gets too hot outside. As the ambient temperature rises your ability to make the balloon float sinks.

As the sun was creeping over the horizon they began to fill the Balloon. It was a big balloon that held about 16 people plus the pilot. When the balloon was almost ready to take off you scrambled into your compartment while the basket was on its side then waited for it to right itself and lift off. All of a sudden you were in the air and you began to realize how magical this really was. With only the sound of the blasts of flame you were floating over one of the most spectacular sites in the world.

To the majority of the animals you were nonexistent but to the elephants it was a different story. The old cows herded the young into a circle and trumpeted their outrage at the sky. It was one of those occasions that was perfect and yet seemed to be over in an instant. The next thing that we knew it was time for touch down. Which in actuality was more like, hit the ground, drag a bit, hit the ground drag a bit, and then it was over.

The celebration was capped off with a hot breakfast in the middle of the wilderness. As the Champaign was being toasted and the eggs consumed all of sudden we realized what we had just done and “WASN’T IT COOL”
