Friday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, undefeated Russian prospect Sergei Kovalev walked right through A

Friday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, undefeated Russian prospect Sergei Kovalev walked right through American journeyman Lionel Thompson, in a fight televised on NBC Sports. Thompson simply was ill-equipped to deal with Kovalev’s voluminous skills, and it showed. The fight nearly ended on two knockdowns very late in the 2nd round (one of which was very very close to being after the bell), but Thompson managed to weather the storm only for the privilege of being flattened again and stopped just seconds into the third. Kovalev still hasn’t accomplished anything on a level even remotely sufficient to have truly earned this praise, but he looks to my eye to be a championship-level fighter at this early stage of his career. Thompson is no Chad Dawson, nor even is he a Tony Averlant really, but the precision power punching and the speed with which he delivers combinations, when combined with his awkward defense, great footwork, and obvious closing skills makes it very difficult for me to picture any top light heavyweight, with the possible exception of Campillo, beating him. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself. This is the first time I’ve actually seen Kovalev in action, and his opponent was several tiers beneath the level I am projecting him to have attained. Still, his flashy skills and power- especially in light of the fact that he’s unfortunately killed an opponent in the ring- will likely win him some significant fights on the intimidation factor alone. Think Mike Tyson vs. Michael Spinks.

The following night in Buenos Aires, Argentine prospect Roberto Feliciano Bolonti knocked out solid journeyman Jose Clavero, also of Argentina, in the 8th round of what was billed as the South American light heavyweight title. I’m not going to knock it too much, since South America isn’t exactly a hotbed of good 175 pounders, but for my money I’d rather have seen an all-Colombian showdown between Edison Miranda and Eleider Alvarez for that honor. Certainly Feliciano Bolonti can be viewed as the legitimate Argentine champ at this point, though. Clavero came in as a respectable journeyman on the international level, having performed well against prospect Pablo Farias before winning that fight in an inconclusive manner by DQ when he flopped like a dying fish after Farias hit him on the break.

Neither prospect was in deep enough to earn a ranking, so there are no changes this week.

Dan’s Top 20

Champ: Andre Ward (3-3-3)

Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO10 Champ Chad Dawson (at SMW)

Next Fight: Unknown

Ward is talking like he might fight Kelly Pavlik next, with a full move to 175 on the table at some point as well.

1) Chad Dawson (3-330-330)
Last Fight: 9/8/2012- L(TKO10) vs. SMW Champ Andre Ward (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown

Most sources will still credit him with being the light heavyweight championship, but he lost a fight at or below the 175 pound limit, and thus his conqueror deserves that honor regardless of the actual weights of the fighters.

2) Bernard Hopkins (3-329-329)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- L(MD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

3) Jean Pascal (3-171-171)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown

Pascal will come back in December following his long inactivity and hand injury (thus retaining his ranking), with venue and TV problems ensuring that the Cloud fight could not be rescheduled until 2013. No opponent has been announced.

4) Gabriel Campillo (3-118-118)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown

No word yet on a timetable for Campillo’s recovery from an injury that forced him to withdraw from what in retrospect would have been a really intriguing fight with Sergei Kovalev.

5) Tavoris Cloud (3-161-161)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12* vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #9 Karo Murat

With Pascal’s injury and subsequent scheduling difficulties related to TV dates and the venue, Cloud will now apparently fight Karo Murat sometime in November. If successful, the idea would be for him to reschedule the Pascal fight for next year.

6) Cornelius White (3-11-41)

Last Fight: 7/14/2012- UD12 #10 Dmitri Sukhotski

Next Fight: Unknown

White is on a tear. Is he really top-5 good? I wouldn’t think so, but he proves me wrong every time I feel I might be overrating him.

7) Nathan Cleverly (3-138-138)
Last Fight: 2/25/2012- UD12 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: 10/27/2012- vs. #13 Vyacheslav Uzelkoff

Cleverly has taken what could be a trap fight against the somewhat underachieving Uzelkoff, in Cardiff.

8) Tony Bellew (11-50-50)

Last Fight: 9/8/2012- TKO9 Edison Miranda (UNR)

Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent

Bellew is back in mid-November. No opponent yet.

9) Karo Murat (3-52-73)

Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO7 Sandro Siproshvili (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. #5 Tavoris Cloud

With Pascal’s injury, Murat will get his alphabet title shot a little earlier than expected, with November being the apparent target.

10) Beibut Shumenov (3-114-118)

Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 Enrique Ornelas (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Word has it that Shumenov is working on fighting gatekeeper/journeyman hybrid Nicholson Poulard in November, either in Vegas or Kazakhstan. While it could be argued that Poulard is a bit more live of a body than Shumenov’s last 3 opponents, the step up would be marginal at best, and he’s really not at a different level than those guys. Let’s hope this fight falls through, because Shumenov hasn’t fought a decent opponent in well over 2 years, and this would be a pathetic way to move forward in his career.

11) Yusaf Mack (3-118)
Last Fight: 7/7/2012- UD6 Sabou Ballogou (UNR)
Next Fight: 11/17/2012- vs. #1 SMW Carl Froch (at SMW)

In a fairly sudden development, Mack will drop back down to 168 to fight Carl Froch.

12) Isaac Chilemba (3-34)

Last Fight: 2/3/2012- UD10 #16 Edison Miranda

Next Fight: 9/29/2012- vs. Rayco Saunders (UNR)

Chilemba’s notoriously fragile opponent Zsolt Erdei had to pull out of their fight. Chilemba will keep the date, against journeyman Rayco Saunders. He reportedly won’t be fighting live on HBO anymore, though clips will appear.

13) Vyacheslav Uzelkoff (3-34)

Last Fight: 7/21/2012- W(MD12) vs. Mohamed Belkacem (UNR)

Next Fight: 10/27/2012- vs. #7 Nathan Cleverly

Uzelkoff won’t be able to muddle his way through his next fight the way he did with Belkacem if he intends to have a shot.

14) Andrzej Fonfara (3-11)

Last Fight: 7/13/2012- UD10* SMW #16 Glen Johnson

Next Fight: 11/16/2012- vs. Tommy Karpency (UNR)

Fonfara will fight journeyman Tommy Karpency in Chicago in mid-November.

15) Jürgen Brähmer (3-23)

Last Fight: 4/21/2012- UD10 Vikapita Meroro (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Braehmer has showed up for his last two fights, which at least feels like a record for him.

16) Denis Grachev (3-22)

Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO8 #15 Ismayl Sillakh

Next Fight: 11/3/2012- vs. SMW #3 Lucian Bute

Grachev will fight Lucian Bute at a 170 pound catchweight in November.

17) Dmitri Sukhotski (3-100)

Last Fight: 7/14/2012- L(UD12) vs. #16 Cornelius White

Next Fight: Unknown

The White loss must be a bitter disappointment for Sukhotski, who had been in line for a shot at an alphabet strap held by Cleverly for some time, but with Cleverly blatantly ducking him to great effect.

18) Mikkel Kessler (3-19)

Last Fight: 5/19/2012- TKO4 Allan Green (UNR)

Next Fight: 12/8/2012- vs. Brian Magee (UNR) (at SMW)

Kessler will fight Irish fringe contender Brian Magee on December 8 in Denmark. The fight will be at 168 it would seem.

19) Tony Averlant (3-26)

Last Fight: 3/31/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Eduard Gutknecht (Robbery)

Next Fight: Unknown

Averlant is probably closer to the journeyman he was on 3/30 than the solid fringe contender he became on 3/31, but a win is a win…even when it’s a loss (in Germany).

20) Ismayl Sillakh (3-89)

Last Fight: 4/27/2012- L(TKO8) vs. Denis Grachev (UNR)

Next Fight: 10/13/2012- vs. Dmitri Kudryashov (UNR) (at CW)

Sillakh will look to get back in the win column when he fights totally untested Russian undefeated prospect Dmitri Kudryashov in Russia, apparently at cruiserweight.

The Week Ahead: Rather inactive gatekeeper Lafarrell Bunting sees his first action of 2012 on Tuesday, when he takes on journeyman and fellow Tennessean Donnell Wiggins in Memphis on Tuesday. Wiggins was very briefly a significant fighter about 9 years ago when he beat gatekeeper Rodney Moore, before consecutive losses to Jeff Lacy and Rico Hoye made him a journeyman for good.

On Saturday, #12 Isaac Chilemba takes on reasonably decent journeyman Rayco Saunders on the (mostly) non-televised HBO undercard. The word is that HBO will show highlights of the fight during their broadcast. And in Caracas, Venezuela, Mexican gatekeeper Elco Garcia meets American undefeated prospect Marcus Oliveira.

Next Fight: Unknown

Ward hasn’t scaled over 168 since 2009, and has done so just twice in his whole career, and yet finds himself as the reigning Light Heavyweight AND Super Middleweight champion after breaking down fellow reigning Champion Chad Dawson in a fight at 168.

Next Fight: Unknown Date- vs. Brian Magee (UNR) (at SMW)

Kessler will fight Irish fringe contender Brian Magee later this year. No date or location yet. The fight will be at 168 it would seem.

19) Tony Averlant (2-25)

Last Fight: 3/31/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Eduard Gutknecht (Robbery)

Next Fight: Unknown

Averlant is probably closer to the journeyman he was on 3/30 than the solid fringe contender he became on 3/31, but a win is a win…even when it’s a loss (in Germany).

20) Ismayl Sillakh (2-88)

Last Fight: 4/27/2012- L(TKO8) vs. Denis Grachev (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

I didn’t see that coming at all. I trust Sillakh will bounce back from the upset loss to Grachev. But wow.

The Week Ahead: Friday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, undefeated Russian Sergei Kovalev battles journeyman Lionell Thompson on NBC Sports. The following night in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local prospect Roberto Feliciano Bolonti takes on his countryman, decent journeyman Jose Clavero.

______________________________

Today, in Russia, one increasingly hears demands to toughen penalties for offending believers. The proposed amendments to the article in the RF Criminal Code on human dignity provoked intense debate in Russian society. Recently, United Russia Gosduma deputies put forward a proposal to amend Article 282 of the Criminal Code (Inciting hatred or enmity, and degradation of human dignity), whilst the RF Federation Council supported the initiative. These actions from parliamentarians caused a strong reaction in the public.

A separate and specific need to protect the feelings of believers in Russia arose at the beginning of 2012, after an unfortunate incident at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. In late February, members of the Russian feminist punk-rock band Pussy Riot took over the bema in the church, where they made what they called a “punk prayer”. The lyrics of the song, posted later on the internet, contained offensive language applied to President Vladimir Putin and to Patriarch Kirill Gundyaev, the First Hierarch of the MP. Pussy Riot’s stunt infuriated many people, even those who didn’t consider themselves Orthodox Christians. The cops arrested three of the “punk prayer” participants and they’re now in gaol. However, many don’t agree that they should be in the slammer. Over a hundred figures from the Russian arts world, amongst them the most famous and beloved actors, directors, writers, and musicians, signed an appeal to the RF Supreme Court and the Moscow City Court in defence of the Pussy Riot members. Then, the Russian media broke a few scandals related directly to Patriarch Kirill and the Church, which gave rise to talk about a deliberately-focused anti-clerical campaign. What poured more fuel unto the fire was the recent “Silver Galoshes” Award, which is an annual spoof award for dubious achievements. This year, its board nominated Patriarch Kirill as one of the candidates, and he was voted one of the “winners”.

However, not only is Orthodoxy under attack, but also other confessions and religions. Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, the Chairman of the MP Department for Church and Society, said, “Existing laws don’t protect us against attacks on faith and religion. Today, many believe that it’s clear that the current penalties for insulting the religious feelings of believers and the desecration of venerated objects, i.e., administrative fines ranging from 500 to 1,000 roubles (15-30 USD. 12.50-25 Euros. 10-20 UK Pounds), are unacceptably pathetic. Deprecating people’s religious feelings is a crime that could threaten civil peace in our country and put huge masses of people at loggerheads. We know of such examples related to the burning of the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad cartoons. Contempt for the feelings of believers and religious objects is extremely dangerous, and we should punish it no less severely than we do ethnic provocations or the desecration of graves or symbols of the state”.

United Russia Gosduma deputies have already begun to prepare amendments to Article 282 for the autumn session. These provide not only significantly increased fines for offending religious sentiments, but also even the possibility of imprisonment. Russian Muslims praised the proposed amendments. Albir Krganov, the first deputy of the Supreme Mufti of Russia, said, “We have a saying in Islam, ‘What the Lord left undone in the Quran, the Sultan took care of’. However, in light of recent events, no matter how democratic any society, there’s a potential risk of inciting ethnic hatred. The people who incited what happened at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour weren’t people of other nationalities and beliefs. However, for example, what if they weren’t Russian, or if they were non-Orthodox? How would our society react to that? I’m confident that the Gosduma shall take all necessary measures to maintain stability concerning this delicate matter”.

However, some religious leaders believe that the introduction of a new law is an ineffective way to deal with attacks on the religious feelings of believers. Rabbi Zinovy Kogan, the Chairman of the Congress of Jewish Religious Communities and Organizations of Russia, said in an interview with VOR, “I don’t believe in criminal punishment for this, and I think that the only problem is that we don’t properly enforce the existing laws on religious hatred. Any time you tighten up the law, it incites antagonism. At a time when our society has very large divisions and much acrimony, we, the religious leaders of all faiths, on the contrary, must show an example of charity and tolerance. Anti-religious agitation is already illegal under existing laws. Why, the present laws prohibit even kids from saying certain things. It’s better for us to let some mistaken things pass, for the sake of freedom and liberty. We shouldn’t turn our people into a nation of gagged mutes. If there’s falsehood, let us correct it. You have to be tolerant”.

The main argument of those who oppose introducing amendments to the Criminal Code to protect believers is that such is a violation of constitutional principles. Human rights activist Sergei Kovalyov said, “Such an approach contradicts the legal principle of the equality of all before the law. It’s necessary to defend the principle of equal rights at all costs. The existence of a group of citizens having a special exemption from abuse is unconstitutional. Moreover, we have a secular state, the Church and its believers don’t have any privileges over other groups”.

Roman Lunkin, Director of Research at the Institute on Religion and Law of the Centre for the Study of Religion and Society at the Institute of Europe, said, “For now, it isn’t a necessity to change the existing law and introduce amendments to it, rather, we should seek ways of consensus between society and religious bodies. Of course, we shouldn’t let a person insult the religious sensibilities of others, that’s obvious. Cultured and intelligent people don’t do this. However, in an open democratic society, we should allow a certain amount of satire, including towards religion and belief. For example, look at how the popes reacted to all the scandals associated with the Catholic Church over the years. Just recently, there was a financial scandal at the Vatican, and, for a long time, the Holy See gave no response to it. Because for they’ve lived for many years in a democratic society, Catholics are accustomed to the criticisms and arguments of atheists, Marxists, and secularists, who claim that religion’s a purely personal concern. Simply put, they just didn’t react to such statements and jabs. In particular, I’m sure that the Orthodox Church will get used to such a position”.

Against the backdrop of the Russian debate about whether or not (and in what way) to protect religious values and feelings, the refusal of Swiss Senate to protect Christian symbols in the country went almost unnoticed. In mid-June, the upper chamber of the Federal Assembly of Switzerland refused to act on a parliamentary initiative to protect the Christian symbolism through an article in the constitution. Seventeen of the 21 members of the Senate voted to quash the initiative. Those in favour of passing the measure were sure that there was hostility to the crucifixion in Switzerland, leading to criticism of crosses in classrooms, on roadsides, and on mountaintops. They cited acts of vandalism against Christian symbols. They opined that this might lead to the possible removal of Christian symbolism from public places, leading to the disappearance of the Christian religion, which is the foundation of Western European culture. Those who voted against it warned that if they granted a special position to Christian manifestations in the constitution, it might lead to a “Kulturkampf”.

Laws to protect the feelings of believers and penalties for desecration of religious objects exist in different countries. However, the existence of special laws and legal deterrents won’t protect believers from those who seek to hurt them. That’s why the European Court of Human Rights deals so often with cases dealing with violations of religious rights today.

Russian prospect Sergei Kovalev saw action on Friday for the first time since opponent Roman Simakov

Russian prospect Sergei Kovalev saw action on Friday for the first time since opponent Roman Simakov suffered fatal brain injuries in their December bout, mercifully stopping power-punching journeyman Darnell Boone much earlier- by 5th round TKO- in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Friday.

On Saturday, #6 Karo Murat took care of late replacement Sandro Siproshvili in a 7th round TKO in Herning, Denmark. Finally, #8 Beibut Shumenov had an easy night in another embarrassingly easy “title defense,” dominating a very passive Enrique Ornelas to a 12-round shutout in Vegas.

None of these fighters was in tough enough to affect their rankings.

Dan’s Top 20

Champ: Chad Dawson (6-314-314)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- W (MD12) Champ Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: 9/8/2012- vs. SMW Champ Andre Ward (at SMW)

Wow- it really is happening! Dawson will reportedly drop down to 168 to challenge Andre Ward for the World Championship at Super Middle. For my money, it will also be an opportunity for Ward to capture Dawson’s light heavyweight title. He’s fighting the 175 champion under the 175 limit. I’m not sure this scenario has ever played out in the history of boxing…and it’s pretty exciting- even if the fight itself may not be.

1) Bernard Hopkins (6-313-313)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- L(MD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

I’m not sure what he thinks he can or still wants to prove, but 47-year-old Hopkins has shrugged off retirement talk and there is talk of a potential fight with Nathan Cleverly.

2) Jean Pascal (6-155-155)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: 8/11/2012- vs. #4 Tavoris Cloud

Showtime has kindly provided the date of August 11 for the Pascal-Cloud tilt. That’s more than 14-months since Pascal’s last fight…just sayin’.

3) Gabriel Campillo (16-102-102)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown

With Cloud apparently sidestepping not only Campillo, but also a mandatory with Karo Murat in favor of an even better match with Pascal, I wonder if Campillo might get the rematch with Murat, instead.

4) Tavoris Cloud (16-145-145)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12* vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo (Robbery)
Next Fight: 8/11/2012- vs. #2 Jean Pascal

It appeared certain that Cloud would fight Murat next, but now he’s fighting Pascal instead.

5) Nathan Cleverly (34-122-122)
Last Fight: 2/25/2012- UD12 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Originally scheduled to fight the underwhelming Robin Krasniqi, a virus scuttled that fight for him. Not that anyone’s complaining. Barring a rescheduling, which would be problematic from the WBO’s perspective, Cleverly may be looking toward his mandatory with Sukhotski next, though there’s some talk of a Hopkins fight, as well.

6) Karo Murat (36-36-57)

Last Fight: 6/2/2012- TKO7 Sandro Siproshvili (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

After his hopes for a Cloud fight were dashed, Murat will settle for a short-notice stay-busy fight with Cuban prospect Miguel Velozo.

7) Tony Bellew (34-34-34)

Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO5 #20 Danny McIntosh

Next Fight: Unknown

Bellew has at least rhetorically severed ties with promoter Frank Warren and is reportedly in the running for a July 7 fight on Sky Sports. Warren is threatening legal action over the split and the potential fight, however.

8) Beibut Shumenov (18-98-102)

Last Fight: 6/2/2012- UD12 Enrique Ornelas (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

After embarrassing both Enrique Ornelas and himself (merely for taking the fight), Shumenov has already been approached for fights with Hopkins, Cleverly, and Kessler. That being the case, he won’t have much of an excuse left if he ends up fighting his 4th consecutive journeyman.

9) Yusaf Mack (18-66-102)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- UD12 Omar Sheika (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Mack called out Cloud and Dawson after beating Sheika. Sure, he’s a top 10 fighter, but that still feels like a stretch for him.

10) Dmitri Sukhotski (18-18-84)

Last Fight: 10/8/2011- TKO2 Nadjib Mohammedi (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

The WBO originally demanded that Cleverly fight Sukhotski rather than the mediocre Krasniqi, but then backed down and gave Cleverly an extra 4 months to take the fight. Now that Cleverly got sick and cancelled on Krasniqi, surely this fight will have to happen now…

11) Isaac Chilemba (18-18)

Last Fight: 2/3/2012- UD10 #16 Edison Miranda

Next Fight: Unknown

Chilemba, a former super middleweight, now has the highest ranking of his career at either weight after beating fringe contender Miranda.

12) Vyacheslav Uzelkov (10-18)

Last Fight: 5/12/2012- UD8 Ravshanbek Jabbarov (UNR)

Next Fight: 7/21/2012- vs. Unknown Opponent

Uzelkov is now scheduled for a fight in mid-July in Odessa, Ukraine.

13) Jürgen Brähmer (7-7)

Last Fight: 4/21/2012- UD10 Vikapita Meroro (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Braehmer has showed up for his last two fights, which at least feels like a record for him.

14) Denis Grachev (6-6)

Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO8 #15 Ismayl Sillakh

Next Fight: Unknown

Yes, it was a flukey win, and it’s clear from his performance on its face that, at least at this point, he’s not this good. But honestly the result in black and white could have supported a rating as high as around #10. Common sense can only demote a guy so far (in conjunction with relative inexperience) when his actual resume calls out for a decent ranking.

15) Mikkel Kessler (2-3)

Last Fight: 5/19/2012- TKO4 Allan Green (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

A Froch fight in the fall now looks extremely likely, at 168.
16) Cornelius White (2-25)

Last Fight: 5/12/2012- KO2 Anthony Bowman (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

White, who was blown out in one round by prospect Don George at super middleweight early in 2011, may be a fluke. But at least for one night, he looked a lot better against former top amateur Yordanis Despaigne than did established fringe contender Edison Miranda.

17) Zsolt Erdei (2-81)

Last Fight: 6/4/2011- KO6 Byron Mitchell (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Erdei will be subject to removal when I perform the June 11-17 update if he doesn’t schedule a fight before that. He has run into some hard luck with injury and Showtime’s budget, but he’s had time to find something when neither were a factor. And his level of competition over the years doesn’t call for much sympathy.

18) Tony Averlant (2-10)

Last Fight: 3/31/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Eduard Gutknecht (Robbery)

Next Fight: Unknown

Averlant is probably closer to the journeyman he was on 3/30 than the solid fringe contender he became on 3/31, but a win is a win…even when it’s a loss (in Germany).

19) Ismayl Sillakh (2-73)

Last Fight: 4/27/2012- L(TKO8) vs. Denis Grachev (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

I didn’t see that coming at all. I trust Sillakh will bounce back from the upset loss to Grachev. But wow.

20) Eduard Gutknecht (2-2)

Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead: A really nice battle of prospects dominates the division this week from Montreal. 8-0 Cuban Eleider Alvarez takes on 23-1 South Dakotan Shawn Hawk. Both guys are in the top 50, and the winner may very well crack at least the top 25.

No in-ring action to report at 175, this week, but Adrian Diaconu has not fought in over a year now,

No in-ring action to report at 175, this week, but Adrian Diaconu has not fought in over a year now, and has no fight scheduled. Diaconu hasn’t won since October 2010, and has not beaten anybody worth fighting since his close-fought April 2008 decision over Chris Henry. Diaconu’s exit makes room for the return of the otherwise plummeting Eduard Gutknecht, who was bumped out only last week after a bit over a year in the rankings.

Dan’s Top 20

Champ: Chad Dawson (5-313-313)

1) Bernard Hopkins (5-312-312)
Last Fight: 4/28/2012- L(MD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

I’m not sure what he thinks he can or still wants to prove, but 47-year-old Hopkins has shrugged off retirement talk and there is talk of a potential fight with Nathan Cleverly.

2) Jean Pascal (5-154-154)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: 8/11/2012- vs. #4 Tavoris Cloud

Showtime has kindly provided the date of August 11 for the Pascal-Cloud tilt. That’s more than 14-months since Pascal’s last fight…just sayin’.

3) Gabriel Campillo (15-101-101)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- L*(UD12) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (Robbery)
Next Fight: Unknown

With Cloud apparently sidestepping not only Campillo, but also a mandatory with Karo Murat in favor of an even better match with Pascal, I wonder if Campillo might get the rematch with Murat, instead.

4) Tavoris Cloud (15-144-144)
Last Fight: 2/18/2012- UD12* vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo (Robbery)
Next Fight: 8/11/2012- vs. #2 Jean Pascal

It appeared certain that Cloud would fight Murat next, but now he’s fighting Pascal instead.

5) Nathan Cleverly (33-121-121)
Last Fight: 2/25/2012- UD12 Tommy Karpency (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Originally scheduled to fight the underwhelming Robin Krasniqi, a virus scuttled that fight for him. Not that anyone’s complaining. Barring a rescheduling, which would be problematic from the WBO’s perspective, Cleverly may be looking toward his mandatory with Sukhotski next, though there’s some talk of a Hopkins fight, as well.

6) Karo Murat (35-35-56)

Last Fight: 10/1/2011- Draw (SD12) vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo

Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. Miguel Velozo (UNR)

After his hopes for a Cloud fight were dashed, Murat will settle for a short-notice stay-busy fight with Cuban prospect Miguel Velozo.

7) Tony Bellew (33-33-33)

Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO5 #20 Danny McIntosh

Next Fight: Unknown

After demolishing McIntosh for the British title, Bellew has renewed his calls for a rematch with Cleverly. He also named Cloud and Shumenov as guys he’s ready for. He also recently became the latest fighter to announce a split with promoter Frank Warren which Warren denies.

8) Beibut Shumenov (17-97-101)

Last Fight: 7/29/2011- TKO9 Danny Santiago (UNR)
Next Fight: 6/2/2012- vs. Enrique Ornelas (UNR)

How this guy gets to keep even an alphabet title while fighting exactly William Joppy, Danny Santiago, and Enrique Ornelas over what will become more than a 2-year span is well beyond me. And that’s setting aside the fact that he got totally worked in the fight that “won” him the title in the first place. I know for a fact that Adrian Diaconu wanted to fight him, so it’s not like he’s being ducked by every name fighter out there.

9) Yusaf Mack (17-65-101)
Last Fight: 4/27/2012- UD12 Omar Sheika (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Mack called out Cloud and Dawson after beating Sheika. Sure, he’s a top 10 fighter, but that still feels like a stretch for him.

10) Dmitri Sukhotski (17-17-83)

Last Fight: 10/8/2011- TKO2 Nadjib Mohammedi (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

The WBO originally demanded that Cleverly fight Sukhotski rather than the mediocre Krasniqi, but then backed down and gave Cleverly an extra 4 months to take the fight. Now that Cleverly got sick and cancelled on Krasniqi, surely this fight will have to happen now…

11) Isaac Chilemba (17-17)

Last Fight: 2/3/2012- UD10 #16 Edison Miranda

Next Fight: Unknown

Chilemba, a former super middleweight, now has the highest ranking of his career at either weight after beating fringe contender Miranda.

12) Vyacheslav Uzelkov (9-17)

Last Fight: 5/12/2012- UD8 Ravshanbek Jabbarov (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Deserved much better than a unanimous decision loss against Gutknecht, and is rewarded for it in my rankings.

13) Jürgen Brähmer (6-6)

Last Fight: 4/21/2012- UD10 Vikapita Meroro (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Braehmer has showed up for his last two fights, which at least feels like a record for him.

14) Denis Grachev (5-5)

Last Fight: 4/27/2012- TKO8 #15 Ismayl Sillakh

Next Fight: Unknown

Yes, it was a flukey win, and it’s clear from his performance on its face that, at least at this point, he’s not this good. But honestly the result in black and white could have supported a rating as high as around #10. Common sense can only demote a guy so far (in conjunction with relative inexperience) when his actual resume calls out for a decent ranking.

15) Mikkel Kessler (1-2)

Last Fight: 5/19/2012- TKO4 Allan Green (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Kessler recently expressed interest in rematching both Andre Ward and Carl Froch following Froch’s demolition of Lucian Bute. He may not be at 175 for long.
16) Cornelius White (1-24)

Last Fight: 5/12/2012- KO2 Anthony Bowman (UNR)

17) Zsolt Erdei (1-80)

Last Fight: 6/4/2011- KO6 Byron Mitchell (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Erdei will be subject to removal when I perform the June 11-17 update if he doesn’t schedule a fight before that. He has run into some hard luck with injury and Showtime’s budget, but he’s had time to find something when neither were a factor. And his level of competition over the years doesn’t call for much sympathy.

18) Tony Averlant (1-9)

Last Fight: 3/31/2012- L*(SD12) vs. #12 Eduard Gutknecht (Robbery)

Next Fight: Unknown

The Week Ahead:

Friday: Russian prospect Sergei Kovalev faces still-dangerous journeyman Darnell Boone in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Saturday: #6 Karo Murat takes on one-loss but otherwise untested Cuban prospect Miguel Velozo in Herning, Denmark. #8 Beibut Shumenov makes an embarrassing title defense in Vegas against journeyman Enrique Ornelas. Sakio Bika and Francisco Sierra are also in action- super middleweights that have been known to come in over the limit.

Undefeated Russian prosect Sergei Kovalev stopped one-loss countryman Roman Simakov in the 7th in Ekaterinburg, Russia on Monday in the week’s only notable action.

For comparison, here are the current Ring Magazine Ratings:

Champ: Bernard Hopkins

1) Jean Pascal
2) Tavoris Cloud

3) Chad Dawson

4) Nathan Cleverly

5) Adrian Diaconu
6) Zsolt Erdei

7) Beibut Shumenov
8) Karo Murat

9) Gabriel Campillo

10) Ismayl Sillakh

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Bernard Hopkins (30-288-288)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- NC* vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

The first official blow against Pat Russell’s bad TKO decision has been struck, as the WBC announced that its title would stay with Hopkins despite the call.

1) Jean Pascal (30-130-130)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown

Dawson wants Pascal, but a Dawson-Hopkins rematch may supersede that before it’s all said and done.

2) Chad Dawson (52-289-289)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- NC* vs. Champ Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown

See Hopkins’ notes, above.

3) Tavoris Cloud (52-120-120)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- TKO8 #8 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: Unknown

Erdei’s injured hand has nixed the entire New Year’s Eve card. Somewhat inexplicably, Showtime rejected Gabriel Campillo- who is likely better than Erdei- as a replacement opponent.

4) Gabriel Campillo (9-77-77)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- Draw (SD12) vs. #14 Karo Murat
Next Fight: Unknown

See Cloud’s notes, above.

5) Nathan Cleverly (9-97-97)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- W*(MD12) vs. Tony Bellew (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

The WBO has ordered him to fight Dmitri Sukhotski in 2012. He is reportedly also exploring a fight with Beibut Shumenov, perhaps in Vegas.

6) Karo Murat (11-11-32)

Last Fight: 10/1/2011- Draw (SD12) vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo

Next Fight: Unknown

I never thought this would happen, but I now rate the long-overrated Murat even higher than does Ring Magazine.

7) Tony Bellew (9-9-9)

Last Fight: 10/15/2011- L*(MD12) vs. #4 Nathan Cleverly

Next Fight: Unknown

Deserved better than a majority decision loss against Cleverly. I thought he won the fight or deserved, at worst, a draw.

8) Eduard Gutknecht (9-32-32)

Last Fight: 7/16/2011- UD12 Lorenzo Di Giacomo (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Ho-hum victory over Di Giacomo. Hopefully he steps back up soon.

9) Beibut Shumenov (9-73-77)

Last Fight: 7/29/2011- TKO9 Danny Santiago (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(TKO8) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud
Next Fight: Unknown

Mack looks a little too small to compete with the top guys at this weight, but still has a good enough resume to avoid dropping too far.

11) Dmitri Sukhotski (9-59)

Last Fight: 10/8/2011- TKO2 Nadjib Mohammedi (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

See Cleverly’s notes, above.
 12) Adrian Diaconu (9-240)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

A quality fighter, Diaconu is nevertheless slipping in the rankings simply because he never wins against anyone above the journeyman level. He ought to try and find some kind of mid-range fringe contender just to get a decent win, because fighting journeymen or top contenders isn’t working out for him.

13) Ismayl Sillakh (9-48)

Last Fight: 6/4/2011- KO6 Byron Mitchell (UNR)

Next Fight: 12/31/2011- vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (UNR)

Erdei’s injured hand has nixed the entire New Year’s Eve card, including his fight with Cloud.

15) Danny McIntosh (9-77)
Last Fight: 5/7/2011- L(TKO8) vs. Eduard Gutknecht (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Significantly diminished by his loss to Gutknecht, but still has a better win in Thierry Karl than the two guys rated immediately below him: Karo Murat and…well…Thierry Karl.

16) Yordanis Despaigne (9-20)

Last Fight: 7/29/2011- W(DQ5) vs. Edison Miranda (UNR)

Next Fight: 12/17/2011- vs. Cornelius White (UNR)

Despaigne will fight one-loss prospect Cornelius White on December 17. White was destroyed on ShoBox by Don George at Super Middleweight back in February, so he’s probably not a huge threat here.

17) Jesus Gonzales (9-23)

Last Fight: 7/8/2011- UD12 Francisco Sierra (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

His present and future are probably both at 168, but he beat a good enough light heavyweight to earn this ranking, nevertheless.

18) Thierry Karl (9-77)

Last Fight: 11/5/2011- KO1 Mile Nikolic (UNR) (at CW)
Next Fight: Unknown

Karl is a threat to be removed in late January if he doesn’t schedule a light heavyweight fight soon.

19) Dyah Davis (6-38)

Last Fight: 10/21/2011- UD6 Darnell Boone (UNR)

Next Fight: 1/6/2012- vs. Alfonso Lopez (UNR)

Davis will lead off the new season of Friday Night Fights on January 6, when he takes on Alfonso Lopez, the prospect who probably deserved a win over Kelly Pavlik in 2011.

20) Marcus Johnson (6-6)

The Week Ahead: Polish prospect and former steroid abuser Andrzej Fonfara takes on average journeyman Phill Williams in Chicago on Friday.

Saturday, Ukrainian fringe prospect Oleksandr Cherviak fights Georgian journeyman George Tevdorashvili in Kiev. On the Ward-Froch undercard in Atlantic City, #16 Yordanis Despaigne fights fringe prospect Cornelius White in a 6-rounder, while Colombian fringe contender Edison Miranda battles a fellow fringe contender in Kenya’s Kariz Kariuki in a fight that could easily have implications in the rankings.

One-loss Polish prospect Dawid Kostecki knocked out journeyman and former contender Byron Mitchell in the 4th on Saturday in Warsaw. On the same card, undefeated Pawel Glazewski won a very tight six-round decision over former fringe contender and current mid-level journeyman Matthew Barney. No changes to the rankings.

For comparison, here are the current Ring Magazine Ratings:

Champ: Bernard Hopkins

1) Jean Pascal
2) Tavoris Cloud

3) Chad Dawson

4) Nathan Cleverly

5) Adrian Diaconu
6) Zsolt Erdei

7) Beibut Shumenov
8) Karo Murat

9) Gabriel Campillo

10) Ismayl Sillakh

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Bernard Hopkins (29-287-287)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- NC* vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

The first official blow against Pat Russell’s bad TKO decision has been struck, as the WBC announced that its title would stay with Hopkins despite the call.

1) Jean Pascal (29-129-129)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown

Dawson wants Pascal, but a Dawson-Hopkins rematch may supersede that before it’s all said and done.

2) Chad Dawson (51-288-288)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- NC* vs. Champ Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown

See Hopkins’ notes, above.

3) Tavoris Cloud (51-119-119)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- TKO8 #8 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: 12/31/2011- vs. #14 Zsolt Erdei

Rumor has it Erdei has injured his hand, and the New Year’s Eve showdown appears to be in jeopardy.

4) Gabriel Campillo (8-76-76)
Last Fight: 10/1/2011- Draw (SD12) vs. #14 Karo Murat
Next Fight: Unknown

Campillo had my sympathy after being robbed against Shumenov, but hasn’t helped his case with a long stretch of inactivity against good fighters followed by a back-and-forth draw with Murat.

5) Nathan Cleverly (8-96-96)
Last Fight: 10/15/2011- W*(MD12) vs. Tony Bellew (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

The WBO has ordered him to fight Dmitri Sukhotski in 2012. He is reportedly also exploring a fight with Beibut Shumenov, perhaps in Vegas.

6) Karo Murat (10-10-31)

Last Fight: 10/1/2011- Draw (SD12) vs. #4 Gabriel Campillo

Next Fight: Unknown

I never thought this would happen, but I now rate the long-overrated Murat even higher than does Ring Magazine.

7) Tony Bellew (8-8-8)

Last Fight: 10/15/2011- L*(MD12) vs. #4 Nathan Cleverly

Next Fight: Unknown

Deserved better than a majority decision loss against Cleverly. I thought he won the fight or deserved, at worst, a draw.

8) Eduard Gutknecht (8-31-31)

Last Fight: 7/16/2011- UD12 Lorenzo Di Giacomo (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Ho-hum victory over Di Giacomo. Hopefully he steps back up soon.

9) Beibut Shumenov (8-72-76)

Last Fight: 7/29/2011- TKO9 Danny Santiago (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

See Cleverly’s notes, above.

10) Yusaf Mack (8-40-76)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(TKO8) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud
Next Fight: Unknown

Mack looks a little too small to compete with the top guys at this weight, but still has a good enough resume to avoid dropping too far.

11) Dmitri Sukhotski (8-58)

Last Fight: 10/8/2011- TKO2 Nadjib Mohammedi (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

See Cleverly’s notes, above.
 12) Adrian Diaconu (8-239)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

A quality fighter, Diaconu is nevertheless slipping in the rankings simply because he never wins against anyone above the journeyman level. He ought to try and find some kind of mid-range fringe contender just to get a decent win, because fighting journeymen or top contenders isn’t working out for him.

13) Ismayl Sillakh (8-47)

Last Fight: 11/4/2011- TKO4 Ali Ismailov (UNR) (at CW)

Next Fight: Unknown

14) Zsolt Erdei (8-55)

Last Fight: 6/4/2011- KO6 Byron Mitchell (UNR)

Next Fight: 12/31/2011- vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud (UNR)

Erdei is rumored to have an injured hand, putting the New Year’s Eve showdown with Cloud in jeopardy.

15) Danny McIntosh (8-76)

Light heavyweight prospect Sergei Kovalev took a little time off training in order to fight at cruiser, but his fight with sacrificial lamb Grover Young ended in the second round with a technical draw after Young was unable to continue following an accidental foul. In most jurisdictions, this would have been a no contest, but the California rules (which suck all-around) left Kovalev with a needless blemish on his record.

Last Fight: 4/2/2011- L (SD12*) vs. #6 Krzysztof Wlodarczyk

Next Fight: Unknown

In my opinion he did just enough to win one of the worst fights I’ve ever seen against Wlodarczyk, so I’m in no hurry to see him again. That being said, he performed well against a top 10 guy and deserved the win on that night, so I can’t exactly ignore that.

14) Lateef Kayode (6-41)

It’s always hard to come back from a knockout loss. Herelius could become a go-to quality opponent for the guys locked out of the Super Six.

Last Fight: 7/15/2011- TKO5 Lubos Suda (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Arslan has finally got his comeback on the right track after the Herelius setback by destroying the decent Suda.

20) Alexander Alexeev (6-33)

Last Fight: 6/11/2011- TKO2 Damian Norris (UNR)

Next Fight: 9/3/2011- vs. Ismail Abdoul (UNR)

Will fight decent journeyman Ismail Abdoul in early September in Germany.

THE WEEK AHEAD: 29-year-old American prospect and fringe contender Eric Fields will fight gatekeeper Rubin Williams in Norman, Oklahoma on Friday in the week’s only meaningful cruiserweight action. Fields’ only loss came against Ola Afolabi, and I doubt that will change this week.

The Licina fight is now set for late October.

His team wants to fight Tarver, and he has said he intends to fight in Springfield, MO again for his next fight.

13) Francisco Palacios (5-21)

Last Fight: 4/2/2011- L (SD12*) vs. #6 Krzysztof Wlodarczyk

Next Fight: Unknown

In my opinion he did just enough to win one of the worst fights I’ve ever seen against Wlodarczyk, so I’m in no hurry to see him again. That being said, he performed well against a top 10 guy and deserved the win on that night, so I can’t exactly ignore that.

14) Lateef Kayode (5-40)

Last Fight: 10/30/2010- UD10 Carl Handy (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Ross will finally get back to action when he fights gatekeeper Garrett Wilson November 19 in Atlantic City.

16) Steve Herelius (5-60)

Last Fight: 2/12/2011- L(KO7) vs. #6 Yoan Pablo Hernandez

Next Fight: Unknown

It’s always hard to come back from a knockout loss. Herelius could become a go-to quality opponent for the guys locked out of the Super Six.

17) Enad Licina (5-61)

Will take on Alexander Frenkel in late October.

18) Enzo Maccarinelli (5-61)

19) Firat Arslan (5-6)

Last Fight: 7/15/2011- TKO5 Lubos Suda (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Arslan has finally got his comeback on the right track after the Herelius setback by destroying the decent Suda.

The headlining fight in the division this past week was on Friday Night Fights, where fringe contend

The headlining fight in the division this past week was on Friday Night Fights, where fringe contenders Yordanis Despaigne and Edison Miranda squared off. Unfortunately, referee Vic Drakulich injected himself unnecessarily into the fight and disqualified Miranda for low blows in the 5th round. Now don’t get me wrong- Miranda was going low and Drakulich needed to do something, but the referee painted himself into a corner by deducting a point well before it was warranted, taking a second one in the following round for what probably legitimately should have been the first time, and then DQing him in the next. These were not blatant low blows. I do not mean, however, to take anything away from Despaigne. He was clearly the sharper fighter and probably didn’t lose a round.

#8 Beibut Shumenov defended his alphabet title on Telefutura’s air against totally unworthy journeyman Danny Santiago, scoring a 9th round stoppage.

Undefeated Uzbek prospect Gayrat Ahmedov won a dominant 8-round decision on the Shumenov undercard over mediocre journeyman Billy Bailey, and Russian unbeaten Sergei Kovalev knocked out Kenyan journeyman Douglas Otieno on the non-televised Friday Night Fights undercard. All of these fights took place in Vegas, at two different sites.

Despaigne has now re-established himself as an up-and-comer in the division after a convincing loss to Ismayl Sillakh earlier in the year, and returns to the rankings at #16. Marcus Johnson- a bit of a hard-luck loser in his last fight- exits the rankings due to Despaigne’s return.

For comparison, here are the current Ring Magazine Ratings:

Champ: Bernard Hopkins

1) Jean Pascal
2) Tavoris Cloud

3) Chad Dawson

4) Glen Johnson

5) Nathan Cleverly

6) Adrian Diaconu
7) Zsolt Erdei

8) Karo Murat
9) Beibut Shumenov

10) Gabriel Campillo

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Bernard Hopkins (11-269-269)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- UD12 Champ Jean Pascal
Next Fight: 10/15/2011- vs. #2 Chad Dawson

Hopkins will defend the title on October 15 against #2 Chad Dawson, who just a year ago was as close to a legit champion as you could be without having beaten a Champion or #1 contender before he was shockingly upset by Jean Pascal. The fight will be on PPV.

1) Jean Pascal (11-111-111)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown

All indications are that Pascal’s next fight will be against either Cloud or Erdei. Pascal was ringside at Cloud-Mack.

2) Chad Dawson (33-270-270)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- UD12 #11 Adrian Diaconu
Next Fight: 10/15/2011- vs. Champ Bernard Hopkins

Dawson will look to finally be crowned as Champion against the man whose refusal to fight him kept him perpetually a step away until recently.

3) Tavoris Cloud (33-101-101)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- TKO8 #8 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: Unknown

Cloud easily handled #8 Mack, but that’s still not enough to move him past Dawson.

 4) Glen Johnson (51-424-424)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- L(UD12) vs. SMW #2 Carl Froch (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown

Johnson will be removed next week if he hasn’t unexpectedly scheduled a fight at 175 by then, since his fight with Tavoris Cloud (his last at 175) was a year ago this week.
5) Gabriel Campillo (51-58-58)
Last Fight: 4/15/2011- TKO5 Sergei Beloshapkin (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Reports are that he will likely fight Karo Murat on October 1.

6) Nathan Cleverly (46-78-78)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- TKO4 Alexei Kuziemski (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

It appears that Bellew will fight his mandatory and then Bellew hopefully by the end of the year.

7) Eduard Gutknecht (13-13-13)

Last Fight: 7/16/2011- UD12 Lorenzo Di Giacomo (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Ho-hum victory over Di Giacomo. Hopefully he steps back up soon.

8) Beibut Shumenov (6-54-58)

Last Fight: 1/8/2011- KO6 William Joppy (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/29/2011- vs. Danny Santiago (UNR)

After all the talk of unification, it’s a little disappointing that Shumenov is settling for a journeyman coming off a 14-month layoff, but I guess when you consider his promotional issues and opponents failing to show at the last minute, we should be a little grateful he’s fighting at all.

9) Yusaf Mack (6-22-58)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(TKO8) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud
Next Fight: Unknown

Mack looks a little too small to compete with the top guys at this weight, but still has a good enough resume to avoid dropping too far.

10) Dmitri Sukhotski (11-11-40)

Last Fight: 3/11/2011- TKO5 Konstantin Piternov (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
 11) Adrian Diaconu (13-221)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

A quality fighter, Diaconu is nevertheless slipping in the rankings simply because he never wins against anyone above the journeyman level. He ought to try and find some kind of mid-range fringe contender just to get a decent win, because fighting journeymen or top contenders isn’t working out for him.

12) Ismayl Sillakh (11-29)

Last Fight: 5/21/2011- TKO3 Hamza Wandera (UNR) (as CW)

Next Fight: Unknown

The WBC has ordered a tournament to determine their mandatory challenger to Hopkins, involving Sillakh, Chris Henry, Shumenov, and Erdei. The only one that appears interested is Sillakh.

13) Zsolt Erdei (11-37)

Last Fight: 6/4/2011- KO6 Byron Mitchell (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

There is some buzz at present about a potential fight with Pascal.

14) Danny McIntosh (11-58)
Last Fight: 5/7/2011- L(TKO8) vs. Eduard Gutknecht (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Significantly diminished by his loss to Gutknecht, but still has a better win in Thierry Karl than the two guys rated immediately below him: Karo Murat and…well…Thierry Karl.

15) Karo Murat (11-13)

Last Fight: 5/7/2011- TKO11 #17 Otis Griffin

Next Fight: Unknown

His long-rumored fight with Campillo will reportedly take place on 10/1, though the nothing seems to be official yet.

16) Yordanis Despaigne (1-1)

Last Fight: 7/29/2011- W(DQ5) vs. Edison Miranda (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Got a little bit of a gift from Vic Drakulich in the form of an early stoppage, but was easily winning the fight anyway.

17) Jesus Gonzalez (1-4)

Last Fight: 7/8/2011- UD12 Francisco Sierra (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

His present and future are probably both at 168, but he beat a good enough light heavyweight to earn this ranking, nevertheless.

18) Thierry Karl (1-58)

Last Fight: 1/22/2011- L (TKO11) vs. #17 Danny McIntosh
Next Fight: Unknown

Will probably see a long layoff and a few tune-ups after being stopped by McIntosh. Karl might be done as a major contender.

19) Luis Garcia (1-29)

Last Fight: 11/6/2010- TKO2 Byron Mitchell (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

20) Dyah Davis (1-19)

Last Fight: 4/8/2011- UD10* Marcus Johnson (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Pulled off a bit of an upset in beating hot prospect Marcus Johnson on ShoBox. Seems to be a magnet for controversial scoring, though, as he’s now been on both the good and bad side of at least debatable scorecards in his last two fights.

The Week Ahead: Nothing going on this week, except that Glen Johnson will be removed unless he unexpectedly schedules a fight at 175 this week.

There was no action to report this past week.

For comparison, here are the current Ring Magazine Ratings:

Champ: Bernard Hopkins

1) Jean Pascal
2) Tavoris Cloud

3) Chad Dawson

4) Glen Johnson

5) Nathan Cleverly

6) Adrian Diaconu
7) Zsolt Erdei

8) Karo Murat
9) Beibut Shumenov

10) Gabriel Campillo

Dan’s Top 20
Champ: Bernard Hopkins (10-268-268)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- UD12 Champ Jean Pascal
Next Fight: 10/15/2011- vs. #2 Chad Dawson

Hopkins will defend the title on October 15 against #2 Chad Dawson, who just a year ago was as close to a legit champion as you could be without having beaten a Champion or #1 contender before he was shockingly upset by Jean Pascal. The fight will be on PPV.

1) Jean Pascal (10-110-110)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #1 Bernard Hopkins
Next Fight: Unknown

All indications are that Pascal’s next fight will be against either Cloud or Erdei. Pascal was ringside at Cloud-Mack.

2) Chad Dawson (32-269-269)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- UD12 #11 Adrian Diaconu
Next Fight: 10/15/2011- vs. Champ Bernard Hopkins

Dawson will look to finally be crowned as Champion against the man whose refusal to fight him kept him perpetually a step away until recently.

3) Tavoris Cloud (32-100-100)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- TKO8 #8 Yusaf Mack
Next Fight: Unknown

Cloud easily handled #8 Mack, but that’s still not enough to move him past Dawson.

 4) Glen Johnson (50-423-423)
Last Fight: 6/4/2011- L(UD12) vs. SMW #2 Carl Froch (at SMW)
Next Fight: Unknown

Only has a few weeks to decide to move back to 175 and schedule a fight before he’s removed for inactivity at this weight.
5) Gabriel Campillo (50-57-57)
Last Fight: 4/15/2011- TKO5 Sergei Beloshapkin (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Campillo might have yet another tune-up (ugh) followed by a decent match-up with Karo Murat on the horizon.

6) Nathan Cleverly (45-77-77)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- TKO4 Alexei Kuziemski (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

It appears that Bellew will fight his mandatory and then Bellew hopefully by the end of the year.

7) Eduard Gutknecht (12-12-12)

Last Fight: 7/16/2011- UD12 Lorenzo Di Giacomo (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Ho-hum victory over Di Giacomo. Hopefully he steps back up soon.

8) Beibut Shumenov (5-53-57)

Last Fight: 1/8/2011- KO6 William Joppy (UNR)
Next Fight: 7/29/2011- vs. Danny Santiago (UNR)

After all the talk of unification, it’s a little disappointing that Shumenov is settling for a journeyman coming off a 14-month layoff, but I guess when you consider his promotional issues and opponents failing to show at the last minute, we should be a little grateful he’s fighting at all.

9) Yusaf Mack (5-21-57)
Last Fight: 6/25/2011- L(TKO8) vs. #3 Tavoris Cloud
Next Fight: Unknown

Mack looks a little too small to compete with the top guys at this weight, but still has a good enough resume to avoid dropping too far.

10) Dmitri Sukhotski (10-10-39)

Last Fight: 3/11/2011- TKO5 Konstantin Piternov (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown
 11) Adrian Diaconu (12-220)
Last Fight: 5/21/2011- L(UD12) vs. #2 Chad Dawson
Next Fight: Unknown

A quality fighter, Diaconu is nevertheless slipping in the rankings simply because he never wins against anyone above the journeyman level. He ought to try and find some kind of mid-range fringe contender just to get a decent win, because fighting journeymen or top contenders isn’t working out for him.

12) Ismayl Sillakh (10-28)

Last Fight: 5/21/2011- TKO3 Hamza Wandera (UNR) (as CW)

Next Fight: Unknown

The WBC has ordered a tournament to determine their mandatory challenger to Hopkins, involving Sillakh, Chris Henry, Shumenov, and Erdei. The only one that appears interested is Sillakh.

13) Zsolt Erdei (10-36)

Last Fight: 6/4/2011- KO6 Byron Mitchell (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

There is some buzz at present about a potential fight with Pascal.

14) Danny McIntosh (10-57)
Last Fight: 5/7/2011- L(TKO8) vs. Eduard Gutknecht (UNR)
Next Fight: Unknown

Significantly diminished by his loss to Gutknecht, but still has a better win in Thierry Karl than the two guys rated immediately below him: Karo Murat and…well…Thierry Karl.

15) Karo Murat (10-12)

Last Fight: 5/7/2011- TKO11 #17 Otis Griffin

Next Fight: Unknown

Reportedly looking to fight Gabriel Campillo in the fall.

16) Jesus Gonzalez (3-3)

Last Fight: 7/8/2011- UD12 Francisco Sierra (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

His present and future are probably both at 168, but he beat a good enough light heavyweight to earn this ranking, nevertheless.

17) Thierry Karl (3-57)

Last Fight: 1/22/2011- L (TKO11) vs. #17 Danny McIntosh
Next Fight: Unknown

Will probably see a long layoff and a few tune-ups after being stopped by McIntosh. Karl might be done as a major contender.

18) Luis Garcia (3-28)

Last Fight: 11/6/2010- TKO2 Byron Mitchell (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

19) Dyah Davis (3-18)

Last Fight: 4/8/2011- UD10* Marcus Johnson (UNR)

Next Fight: Unknown

Pulled off a bit of an upset in beating hot prospect Marcus Johnson on ShoBox. Seems to be a magnet for controversial scoring, though, as he’s now been on both the good and bad side of at least debatable scorecards in his last two fights.

20) Marcus Johnson (3-16)

Last Fight: 4/8/2011- L(UD10*) vs. #19 Dyah Davis

Next Fight: Unknown

It’s hard to say that a hot prospect could benefit from an upset loss, but in this case he lost to a rateable fighter, and arguably deserved to win. He gets credit for that here- especially considering the lack of good options in the division.

The Week Ahead: Light Heavyweights take over Vegas this week. On two separate cards in that city on the same night Friday, #8 Beibut Shumenov takes on journeyman Danny Santiago in a silly excuse for a title fight. Santiago, at his best, was a gatekeeper- including 3 years ago when he managed to wrangle a title fight with cautious lineal champion Zsolt Erdei, but has not fought in over 14 months. This fight will be televised on Telefutura if you’re lucky enough to get that. On the undercard, fringe contender Gayrat Ahmedov will fight Santiago’s last victim, even worse journeyman Billy Bailey.

Meanwhile, in the Friday Night Fights co-feature, once-beaten prospect Yordanis Despaigne takes a pretty tough rebound fight with Edison Miranda, who recently outgrew Super Middleweight, where he was a fringe contender not long ago. On a likely non-televised undercard fight, undefeated prospect Sergei Kovalev takes on mediocre journeyman Douglas Otieno.

EDITORIAL

Congratulations, Memorial!

Last week in Strasbourg the President of the EU Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, handed Sergei Kovalev, Oleg Orlov, Lyudmila Alexeyeva of the Memorial human rights organization a check for 50,000 euros and presented them with the EU’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Buzek left no doubt about the meaning of the ceremony:

“Human rights defenders in Russia are awaiting liberty. They are waiting for European Union support, and we are awarding this prize today to all Russian citizens. With this prize we members of the European Parliament honor those who still among us fight for human rights. But we also honor those who lost their lives in this valiant struggle. Natalya Estemirova should have been among us today.”

We congratulate these great Russian patriots on their heroic efforts to bring civilization and democracy to Russia at the risk of their own lives, and we condemn the craven cowards who prowl the Kremlin and seek ways to liquidate them, just as was done in Soviet times. We also congratulate the EU for making a clear stand against dictatorship and state-sponsored murder in Russia. The photograph above will surely give the KGB spies in the Kremlin many sleepless nights of well-deserved fury.

Orlov, of course, has already been convicted by Kremlin courts of libeling its lunatic ruler of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadryov, by accusing him of being complicit in the murder of Memorial’s Natalia Estemirova, something Kadyrov has basically admitted is true. And now Orlov is facing criminal prosecution over the same incident.

Accepting the award Kovlalov stated:

Europe’s task is to not remain silent. But to always insist that Russia respects its obligations to human rights.o not call on Russia to do so would be interpreted as indulgence by the Russian authorities. That would be bad for Russia and for Europe as a whole. Russia pays victims the compensation ordered by the European human rights court, it’s a sort of impunity tax. And it refuses to investigate crimes and punish the guilty.

He accused the Kremlin of promoting officers who are sanctioned by the ECHR.

These are the words of a true Russian patriot, a man willing to risk his life to pull his country back from the abyss of failure towards which it is hurtling at breakneck speed. There is a reason Natalia Estemirova, one of Memorial’s leading light, was brutally murdered by the Kremlin: It was afraid of her. If more Russians would join forces with Memorial and stand up against the clan of proud KGB spies who rule it, demanding a better future, Russia could have one.

It is heartening to see Europe reaching out to recognize these Russian heroes. it shows that the lame propaganda campaign being practiced by the Kremlin fools nobody, that there are many in Europe who clearly see the neo-Soviet atrocity that Russia threatens to become. More should now be done to follow up on this first step and give genuine tangible to support to all those brave Russian patriots who will fight for democracy, from Oleg Kozlovsky to Vladimir Milov to Lev Ponomarev. Only when that is done can the West avoid its own repetition of history.

In another editorial today, we congratulate NATO for clearly standing up to Russia on Georgia and Ukraine. Taken together, these two developments clearly signal that the forces opposing the Putin dictatorship are mobilizing and taking effective steps to contain and ultimately destroy the neo-Soviet threat Putin has created. The people of Russia now have a clear choice. We urge them to make the right one.

Congratulations to Oleg Orlov, Sergei Kovalev and Lyudmila Alexeyeva from the Russian civil rights defence organisation “Memorial”, this year’s winner of the Sakharov Prize.

Presented every year by the European Parliament, the Sakharov Prize is awarded for freedom of thought. The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, named in honour of the Soviet physicist and political dissident Andrei Sakharov, has been awarded by the European Parliament every year since 1988 to individuals or organisations who have made an important contribution to the fight for human rights or democracy. This year’s award coincides with the 20th anniversary of Andrei Sakharov’s death.

“Memorial” have been honoured for their contribution towards ending the circle of fear and violence surrounding human rights campaigners in the Russian Federation.

The organisation’s three representatives are:

Oleg Orlov, the current chair of Memorial. On 6 October 2009 Oleg Orlov was fined and ordered to retract public statements following a defamation lawsuit brought against him by the President of the Republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. Orlov had accused Kadyrov of being behind the murder of Chechen rights activist Natalya Estemirova. On 23 November 2007 Orlov himself was abducted in Ingushetia, together with three journalists, before being beaten, threatened with execution and released.

Sergei Kovalev, who founded the first Soviet human rights association in 1969, the Initiative Group for the Defence of Human Rights in the USSR, and became one of the initiators of Memorial. Kovalev has been an outspoken critic of authoritarian tendencies in the administrations of Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin. In 1996 he resigned in protest as head of Yeltsin’s presidential human rights commission. In 2002 he organized a public commission to investigate the 1999 Moscow apartment bombings, which was effectively paralyzed after the persecution and assassination of its members.

Lyudmila Mikhailovna Alexeyeva, who, together with Andrei Sakharov and others, founded the Moscow Helsinki Group to monitor Soviet compliance with the Helsinki Final Act in 1976. Since the 1960s Alexeyeva had been campaigning for fair trials of arrested dissidents and objective coverage in the media. She was excluded from the Communist Party and deprived of her job as editor of a scientific magazine. Alexeyeva co-chaired, with Garry Kasparov and Georgy Satarov, the All-Russian Civic Congress which Alexeyeva and Satarov left due to disagreement with Kasparov in January 2008. She has been critical of the Kremlin’s human rights record and has accused the government of encouraging extremists with its nationalistic policies, such as the mass deportations of Georgians in 2006 and police raids against foreigners working in street markets, as well as Russian conduct in Ingushetia.
