Sérgio Mendes e Brasil 66′ a encerrar.

Ele era dono de uma elasticidade impressionante e tinha raça e talento como nenhum outro goleiro até então no Brasil. Transmitia segurança aos seus companheiros de time e era visto como um obstáculo aos adversários. Foi convocado para disputar a copa do mundo pela seleção brasileira. A festa começa. O Brasil chega à final do campeonato sem maiores dificuldades, tudo estava perfeito, a taça de campeão praticamente nossa, só faltava mais um jogo.

No dia 16 de julho de 1950, no estádio do Maracanã, o atacante uruguaio Ghiggia o surpreendeu. Um chute forte da ponta direita, o goleiro salta para trás e toca a bola. Tarde demais, a redonda rola para o fundo da rede e o goleiro no chão. O silêncio no estádio dá o resultado em campo: Uruguai eleito Campeão Mundial de Futebol. O goleiro jamais foi perdoado, seu nome era Moacir Barbosa. Foi do auge à queda, morreu sem absolvição.

Dezenove anos depois, o Ginásio Gilberto Cardoso, o Maracanãzinho, é palco de uma das maiores apresentações de um artista popular. Cerca de 30 mil pessoas cantam em coro com Wilson Simonal, que tinha sido contratado para abrir o show de Sérgio Mendes e se tornara atração principal da noite. A multidão canta, bate palmas e assobia. Ele controla como um verdadeiro maestro a emoção que contagia homens e mulheres. Um ídolo nacional e showman único na história do País. Simonal vive uma das melhores fases de sua vida. Negro, de origem pobre, encontrou na música o sucesso e a glória. Estava no auge de sua carreira quando tudo mudou em sua vida.

Descoberto pelo apresentador Carlos Imperial, Simonal surgiu no início dos anos 60, no Rio de Janeiro, e rapidamente se lançou como artista revelação da época. Depois do primeiro disco começaram os shows e, além das músicas, seu carisma e swing conquistavam cada vez mais o público. Sua ousadia e irreverência ganhavam cada vez mais repercussão. Foi o primeiro artista negro a apresentar um programa de TV. O Show em Si Monal foi líder de audiência na TV Record, enquanto durou.

Wilson Simonal se tornou o expoente máximo do movimento musical chamado “Turma da Pilantragem” que, entre outras coisas, simbolizava a preferência por dirigir automóveis caros, vestir-se bem e viver cercado por lindas mulheres. Acima de qualquer crítica, esbanjava interpretação vocal, falava de questões raciais e nunca deixou de lembrar sua origem pobre. “Essa coisa do bom humor que ele tinha, acho que ele usava isso como uma técnica, usava a irreverência para conseguir espaço e temas que para ele eram importantes”, diz Simoninha, cantor e produtor musical, sobre o pai. Sua fama e popularidade eram comparáveis apenas a Roberto Carlos. Cantou com Sara Vaughan e Elis Regina, batia bola com Pelé.

Tudo começou a mudar em agosto de 71 e, do céu para o inferno, Simonal passou em pouco tempo. Durante a ditadura militar seu nome foi envolvido com o Departamento de Ordem Política e Social (Dops), após ser acusado de mandar policiais darem uma surra no contador de sua firma, por acreditar que ele o teria roubado. Foi acusado de “dedo-duro” pela imprensa e rejeitado pelo meio artístico. Jogado no ostracismo sem direito a defesa, passou a vida toda tentando se defender. Morreu sem anistia, no ano de 2000, igual ao goleiro Barbosa da Seleção Brasileira de Futebol. No entanto, em 2003, a família, que solicitou investigação sobre o caso, teve a reabilitação simbólica pela Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil (OAB), a partir do documento de 1999, da Secretaria Nacional de Direitos Humanos, que informa que não havia nenhuma ligação de Simonal com a ditadura.

“A história dele é a história de muitas outras pessoas, em outras áreas, que também têm uma ascensão muito grande na vida e, talvez pela questão racial, ainda tenham que enfrentar certos problemas, desconfianças que podem, de uma hora para outra, atrapalhar tudo na vida”, diz Simoninha. Simonal teve sua história retratada no documentário Ninguém sabe o Duro Que Dei, de Cláudio Manoel, Micael Langer e Calvito Leal, que lança um olhar sobre a ascensão e queda de um dos maiores artistas que o país já teve. Com imagens e momentos marcantes o filme é capaz de emocionar quem não conheceu sua trajetória de vida e serve como registro histórico de uma pessoa que foi mantida à margem e privado de exercer sua profissão.

Esta é uma oportunidade para que as pessoas conheçam a real dimensão de Simonal na música popular brasileira e o coloquem no seu devido lugar de destaque.

충무로 영화제 때 감수 본 다큐 <Beyond Ipanema>에서, 에이즈 예방 기금 마련의 일환으로 Red Hot + Rio 앨범을 제작하는 장면이 나온다.  데이빗 번(David Byrne)과 마리사 몬찌(Marisa Monte)가 영어/포르투갈어로 번갈아 부른 듀엣 “Waters of March”가 좋길래, 다시 듣고 싶어서 산 앨범.

같은 다큐에 나온 Sergio Mendes & Brasil ‘66 음악을 찾아보다가, 정규 앨범보다 요 컴필레이션 표지가 더 맘에 들어서 고른 앨범.  IRMA group의 IRMA casa di primordine 레이블에서 발매했고, Sergio Mendes & Brasil ‘66는 1번 트랙 “Righteous Life”만 불렀다.

그리고 위 두 앨범 모두에 Stereolab이 참여했더라구요…  들어보는 김에 Folk, Jazz & Poetry에 있는 Stereolab의 “Percolator”가 수록된 Emperor Tomato Ketchup 앨범과

브레드보드 비슷한 게 그려진 아래의 앨범(Mars Audiac Quintet)을 같이 샀다.  학교 다닐 때 랩에서 제일 만지기 싫어했던 물건이 아닌가 싶은데 너무 많은 앨범 중에 고르기가 어려워서 나도 모르게 손이 가는 것으로…  자세히 보니 frequency oscillator, voltage controlled lowpass, pulse, width 등등이 써있는 오실레이터였다.  (왜 이걸 표지 이미지로?)

Mars Audiac Quintet 앨범 제목 중에서 ”The Stars Our Destination”이 눈에 띄었다.  몇 년 전 영미문화 SF 시간에 읽었던 책 『The Stars My Destination』이랑 거의 같아서.

“The Stars Our Destination”이 저 책과 연관이 있지 않을까 싶어 가사를 찾아봤는데,

In a fluid and shifting
Creative and destructive
Like a water “planet”…
Conjunction of opposites
Active, passive principles
Freedom…  fire…
Fame, glory, fire, water
I will drink fire…

가사 하나만 봐서는 잘 모르겠다.  하지만 책의 prologue 세 번째 문단을 보면 노래와 연관이 있는 것 같다.

“Where are the new frontiers?” the Romantics cried, unaware that the frontier of the mind had opened in a laboratory on Callisto at the turn of the twenty-fourth century.  A researcher named Jaunte set fire to his bench and himself (accidently) and let out a yell for help with particular reference to a fire extinguisher.  Who so surprised as Jaunte and his colleagues when he found himself standing alongside said extinguisher, seventy feet removed from his lab bench.

이렇듯 소설은 우연히 자신의 teleportation 능력을 발견해 우주를 떠돌게 된 남자 Gully Foyle(Jaunte)의 이야기다.  Stereolab이 주인공의 입장에서 노래를 만든 것이 아닐까?  하고 상상해 본다.  어떤 리뷰에는 이 곡에 대한 얘기가 거의 없거나 곡 하나하나를 형용사들로 짝지어 놓기만 했고, 딱히 검색으로 알게 된 게 없네.  내가 못 찾고 있는건가!  아무튼 Alfred Bester가 이 작품을 썼기 때문에 1960년대 New Wave에서부터 70~80년대 싸이버 펑크까지 꽃필 수 있었다고 한다.  Neil Gaiman의 평론 「Of Time, and Gully Foyle」에서 그는 『The Stars My Destination』을 일러 “is, after all, the perfect cyberpunk novel”이라고까지 이야기했다.  이 소설이 1957년에 『The Stars My Destination』이라는 제목으로 나오기 1년 앞서, 영국에서 1956년에 『Tiger!  Tiger!』 라는 제목으로 처음 출간되었다.  소설의 Part 1, 서문 들어가기 전에 Blake의 시 1연이 적혀있다.  전체는 아래와 같다.  (색깔 강조와 밑줄은 내 맘대로 한 것임.)

출처는 The longman anthology, british literature 2nd compact ed. vol. B(pp. 88~89).  이 시는 단독으로 있는 것이 아니라 Blake가 시리즈로 쓴 연작 모음 중 하나다.  Songs of Innocence and of Experience라는 큰 묶음 아래에 Songs of Innocence와 Songs of Experience로 나눠진다.  그 둘에 속하는 시가 각각 여러 편이며, 내용상 {innocence – experience}처럼 대구를 이루는 짝꿍詩가 있다.  예를 들어 Songs of Innocence에 들어있는 「The Lamb」하고 Songs of Experience에 들어있는 「The Tyger」가 짝을 이룬다.  (하지만 뭐 꼭 딱 맞게 모든 시가 짝을 이루는 것은 아니다.  편수도 다름.)  큰 제목 Songs of Innocence and of Experience의 부제를 보면, Shewing the Two Contrary States of the Human Soul이다.  Stereolab의 “The Stars Our Destination” 가사 중 ‘Creative and destructive / Conjunction of opposites / Active, passive principles’이 어쩌면 Blake의 짝꿍詩 세트와 맥락을 함께할 수도 있지 않을까?  아무도 모른다.  아까 그 평론가는 Blake의 시와 Bester의 SF를 엮어 뭐라고 했냐면,

When I read this book – or one very similar; you can no more read the same book again than you can step into the same river – in the early 1970s, as a young teenager, I read it under the title Tiger!  Tiger!  It’s a title I prefer to the rather more upbeat The Stars My Destination.  It is a title of warning, of admiration.  God, we are reminded in Blake’s poem, created the tiger too.  The God who made the lamb also made the carnivores that prey upon it.  And Gully Foyle, our here, is a predator.  We meet him and are informed that he is everyman, a nonentity; then Bester lights the touchpaper, and we stand back and watch him flare and burn and illuminate: almost illiterate, stupid, single-minded, amoral (not in the hip sense of being too cool for morality, but simply utterly, blindly selfish), he is a murderer – perhaps a multiple murderer – a rapist, a monster.  A tiger.

라고 했다.  그럼 뭐야, 스테레오랩이 신이라는 거야?  ㅋㅋㅋ  「The Tyger」 의 각주에 단테의 신곡, 이카루스 신화, 실락원, 요한복음이 나와있으니 이쯤에서 그만해야겠다.  한 단어도 알아듣지 못해도 - 설령 언어가 아니라고 해도 - 좋기만 한 음악인걸 ♬  (아, 그때 한번 들으면 좋아할 수밖에 없다고 들려주신 곡 제목이 뭐였나요?  기억해 두려고, 들으면서 제목을 읽었는데 역시나 기억나지 않네요.  Hjälp!  >_<)

Todos ficam feridos e os dias que se seguem são extremamente traumáticos.

Comentário: o diferencial deste filme é que mostra uma parte mais psicológica de uma guerra, retratada com realismo pelo diretor, que vivenciou este evento.

I decided to start posting these mixes on 9/14/09 while I was listening to various songs on Pandora and Youtube. In the middle of Cesar Comanche’s “Get Ready”, I felt like turning on the turntables, hitting record, and saving whatever songs happened to randomly find their way into my mix within the next hour.

These are the weird results, beginning with the last few seconds of audio from the Cesar Comanche track – the first song, and everything after that is straight from my vinyl collection. “Veja a situação da nossa música”. Quem nunca recebeu um e-mail que começava com essa frase, em que eram citados vários músicos brasileiros que tiveram mortes precoces?! Mas o assunto agora não é a morte, e sim a música.

Esses dias eu estava assistindo o Jornal da Globo e me chamou atenção uma matéria na Coluna Nelson Motta, em que ele falava sobre um documentário lançado nos Estados Unidos chamado “Beyondipanema” a respeito do sucesso da música brasileira na terra do Tio Sam. O ducumnetário conta que a variadade de estilos contribuiram pra tal sucesso e foram citados na matéria “o Pop de Sérgio Mendes, a Bossa Nova, o Tropicalismo e a MPB”.

Agora as tradicionais perguntas: Com qual frequência você ouve esses estilos no rádio?! Quantas vezes você já ouviu Sérgio Mendes no rádio?! Quem é Sérgio Mendes?! (Boa pergunta)

Meu amigo, minha amiga, se você não ouve Nova Brasil FM, provavelmente MPB (e o resto) passa longe de seus ouvidos. Sérgio mendes então…

“Mas esse não é aquele cara que canta com Black Eyed Peas?”

Na verdade é o Black Eyed Peas que cantam com ele. “Mas que nada” é uma música de 1963 composta por Jorge Ben e posteriormente, em 1966, regravada por Sérgio Mendes, que veio a tornar-se o músico brasileiro de maior sucesso nos Estados Unidos.

É engraçado como alguém pode se tornar sucesso por representar a tradição de um povo e esse povo pouco conhecer desse alguém. Não é mesmo do feitio do brasileiro valorizar aquilo que é da terra.

Saltando para os anos 90, a reportagem fala como David Byrne, através dos discos de músicas brasileiras lançadas nos EUA pela sua gravadora, apresentou para o público americano artistas como Os Mutantes e Tom Zé [!!!]. Ainda foram lembrados o Cansei de Ser Sexy e Bebel Gilberto tida como “nosso maior sucesso internacional desde Sérgio Mendes” (ele de novo).

A moral da história é essa. Com qual frequência, nós brasileiros, escutamos no rádio os representantes internacionais de nossa música?!

É incrível o como as músicas da Marisa Monte, outra artista citada na matéria, tocam uma vez ou outra no rádio e cada música lançada pela Ivete Sangalo viram mega hit no Brasil inteiro. Não estou criticando a Ivete, porque eu realmente não acho ela uma artista tão ruim, mas porque nas rádios brasileiras não tem espaço para artistas como a Marisa Monte?!

De a cordo com o que toca nas rádios, música brasileira é sertanejo, pagode e funk carioca e Nx Zero, e se um gringo americano quiser ouvir por aqui as músicas brasileiras que ele escuta por lá, (coitado) vai cair do cavalo.

“Mas no final da reportagem ele fala da M.I.A., que tá levando o funk carioca pro mundo. Funk toca nas rádio brasileiras”

Infelizmente é verdade. O funk toca (e muito) nas rádios brasileiras.

Mas sabe quantas músicas com batida funk a M.I.A. gravou?! UMA (Bucky Done Gun).

Sabe quando?! Em 2004.

Ela gravou uma música com a levada do funk carioca a 4 anos atrás e é considerada a “embaixadora do funk no mundo”. Por que não o Dj Marlboro que foi quem criou a base da tal música?! Eu acho que a resposta para essa pergunta eu dei algumas linhas pra cima: seja bom ou seja ruim, “não é [...] do feitio do brasileiro valorizar aquilo que é da terra”.

Every now  and then I like to do something different.

So, while re-reading some of my old blogs  today for errors…and up-dating some things…I decided to do this.

On rainy days…like today…sometimes you just want something diffierent…a change….something mellow…easy…relaxing. 

And so here it is….enjoy…

I’m staying in today…fighting a bug.  I  guess it would be the reason why I’m feeling just  a bit mellow…since I’m in today  just laying back and taking it easy while I work on my bug.   

Some dust…I guess… got into my system over the weekend while I was painting up a sign…and every since Saturday… I have been fighting something which feels  like an on-coming cold.  After thinking it over for a few days it dawned on me… that some dust must have some how  have gotten into my system and  kicked up my allergies.

So, it’s a good thing  I had gone out a few days ago and bought plenty of  OJ (orange juice) when my throat started feeling funny…and I realized something was coming one me.     Thus far I have been able to keep it a bay.   But I need to be over it by this weekend as we will be out smoking  barbeque ribs and selling hot dogs and fresh squeezed lemonade etc…etc…at the Caribbean Festival.  

I know … I know… they are not West Indian dishes…but…  Everyone else will   be selling curry goat, curry chicken, oxtails, jerk pork and jerk chicken…along with beef patties, plantins, escovitch fish…etc…etc.   So, we spice it up a bit  by selling something a little different.  And everybody loves it.

I have been busy…but most of it is coming to an end now.  And I am looking forward to that…as I am now gearing myself  up for the next  leg  of  this  journey…which is getting out to promote my book.

It’s a pretty good bet that when your opening act is Poncho Sanchez, you are in for some excitement. That was certainly the case Wednesday evening at the Hollywood Bowl, which kicked off its 2009 jazz series with a Latin program featuring Sanchez, Eddie Palmieri and Sergio Mendes. The program attracted a near-capacity crowd, building volume and glitter with each act, though from a musical standpoint you could make the argument that it peaked at the beginning.

Poncho Sanchez

Poncho Sanchez has become such a familiar figure in theSouthland that he might not be expected to anchor a program at such a large venue as the Bowl. His more familiar large ensemble was slimmed down for this performance to an octet. It produced a comfy, laid back feeling that was more than compensated for by the crisp, virtuosity of the performances. The front line featured reed man Javiar Vergara, trumpeter Ron Blake and trombonist Francisco Torres. Vergara took the lead on the opener, Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island” with some fine soloing on the tenor sax. Keyboardist and musical director David Torres contributed a smoking organ riff, with Poncho laying back, providing a lilting patter on the congas.

Horace Silver’s “Silver Serenade,” arranged by David Torres, featured more fine work by Vergara , with Torres switching to piano (or the electronic equivalent thereof). As expected with any Sanchez ensemble, the rhythm section was pulsating, with George Ortiz on timbales and Joey De Leon on bongos, cowbells and assorted gourds, and Tony Banda on bass. For the ensuing Willie Bobo medley, De Leon and Sanchez switched places, with Poncho taking the lead vocals.

All of the tunes came from the forthcoming Psychedelic Blues CD, including the title piece, which featured some rousing timbales work by Ortiz. The set’s finale, a salsa number entitled “Agua De Belen” featured the clear, crisp tones of trumpeter Blake and trombonist Torres; it concluded with Poncho exhorting the audience to “raise your hands,” while he and De Leon led the set to a stirring conclusion

Eddie Palmieri

The Bowl’s rotating stage served up Eddie Palmieri’s septet next, the instrumentation identical save for the absence of trombone, but the volume amped considerably higher. Palmieri had some powerful help on the front line, with trumpeter Brian Lynch and New Orleans stalwart Donald Harrison on the tenor sax. They launched immediately into Thelonius Monk’s “In Walked Bud,” with Lynch’s searing trumpet alternating with Harrison’s tenor, while Palmieri was content to lead the fine rhythm section, which included Jose “Papo” Rodriguez on bongos.

The rest of the program was unannounced, the second number featuring Luques Curtis on piccolo bass, Little Johnny Rivero on congas and Jose Claussell on timbales. Palmieri took the spotlight next with a bluesy electric piano solo before giving way to Donald Harrison. By this time it was evident that there were microphone problems with Harrison’s horn. Either his levels were too low or those around him too high; his efforts were drowned out by the rest of the band. This left it, albeit unintentionally, to trumpeter Lynch to carry the septet and he certainly gave it his best with a series of high octane solos. It was overall an exciting performance, but not quite up to the clarity and crispness of Sanchez’s opening set.

Sergio Mendes

For those of us coming of age musically in the 60s, ergio Mendes’ Brazil 66 was one of the gateways to the Bossa Nova, literally the New Sound. We had heard Stan Getz’s cool renderings of “Desfinado” and “Girl From Ipanema,” but Mendes’ arrangements, with the lush voicings of Lani Hall, evoked the spirit of Carnaval and the romance of Jobim’s music in a larger ensemble. Forty years later, Mendes has tried to keep the act contemporary, turning up the volume, spicing up the arrangements, even adding a rapper to the ensemble. The result is mixed – it’s a Brazilian revue, hitting the highlights of his repertoire, while careening towards something between a night at Carnaval and the Folies Bergere.

At the heart of the ensemble were the vocalists, anchored by Mendes’ wife, Gracinha Leporace, and two talented young singers, Dawn Bishop and Katie Hampton. At the risk of being old-fashioned, the ensemble still seemed to work best when the trio was allowed to carry the arrangements of old favorites like “Pretty World,” Dorival Caymmi’s “Like A Lover” and “Look Of Love”. A hip hop version of “Waters of March” doesn’t cut it for anyone who appreciates the stream-of-consciousness delivery of Jobim, or the more dramatic interpretation of Mark Murphy. Mendes, not abandoning his faithful, followed with a lilting vamp/medley of “Samba Da Bencão,” “Milagre” and “Samba Da Minha Terra”.

Rapper H2O joined the ensemble for several numbers, starting with “Agua De Beber.” Perhaps understanding that most of us would-be Cariocas have no use for a rapper anywhere in this music, H2O was relatively harmless, serving more as an extra percussive presence to a group that didn’t much need it, what with Michael Shapiro on drums. Hussain Jiffry on bass and Kleber Jorge (who was left with surprisingly little to do on guitar). Percussionist Gibi performed an acrobatic dance, a nod to the late Michael Jackson, before retreating to his workshop and giving a creative solo that featured the dual cowbell-like agogô and the Brazilian tambourine, the pandeiro. From there the concert drove toward a spectacular finish, hitting Mendes standards “Mas Que Nada” and “Tristeza” before bringing back H2O to rap along with Jobim’s “Surfboard.

By now the show was turning to a Vegas-like spectacle, the ladies returning in new costumes. When H2O stood between Katie Hampton in her brilliant pink dress and Dawn Bishop bedecked in a flowered sarong over lipstick-red pants, he looked less the menacing rapper than a gleeful kid in a candy store.

That’s sort of how the rest of us felt a few moments later when eight “Extravadancers” entered the stage, in full feathered bloom, promenading through the box seats and dancing on top of the Pool Circle back benches. Now, I don’t want to appear ungrateful, situated as we were in the Pool Circle boxes. I can, after all, sit in my living room any time and listen to old Brazil 66 albums. Watching eight beautiful women in G strings and exotic feathers shaking their bootys to the pulsating rhythms of “Pais Tropical” is another story.

I don’t get that at home.

Not having been to Rio, I’m willing to accept that this was a facsimile of a night at Carnaval, rather than the floor show at the Tropicana, rapper and all. Whatever it was, no one was asking for their money back.

Este Musico, hijo de médico, Nacido en 1941, en un Estado de Rio de Janeiro llamado Niterói, estudio en un conservatorio de su ciudad ya que su deseo era convertirse en pianista clásico. Pero como el Jazz estaba en su auge y se intereso por este tipo de musica que tocaba en clubes nocturnos en los 50 cuando nacia la bossa nova. Su maestro fue Antonio Carlos Jobim con el que toca mas adelante. En 1961 forma el Sexteto Bossa Rio y graban un disco llamado Dance Moderno. Luego crea una banda sonora de la pelicula ” La Mirada del Amor” o “Casino Royale”. En 1966 reemplaza a Wanda de Sa por la cantante nacida en Chicago Lani Hall ( Dato curioso: ella aprendió portugués fonéticamente con Mendes) y se cambio al sello creado por Herb Alpert (esposo de Lani Hall) y Jerry Moss A&M (iniciales de sus apellidos) y lanza “Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes and Brasil ‘66″ y graba el mas exitoso sencillo de una cancion de Jorge Ben “Mais Que Nada”. Los integrantes originales para esa epoca eran:

Mendes (piano), Vocalistas: Lani Hall y Janis Hansen, Bob Matthews (bajo), Jose Soares (percusión) y Joao Palma (bateria) y como guitarrista invitado John Pisano. Todos apoyados por Alpert con el que iban de tour a veces. Con esta banda grabaron desde 1966 hasta 1968 hasta que Hansen deja la banda y la sustituye Karen Phillip. En 1970 Lanni Hall se lanza a solista y se casa con Alpert (algunos dicen que Mendes se molesta con Alpert por años por “robarse” a Hall de su grupo). Su fama fue tal en esa época que le dio conciertos a los presidentes Lyndon B. Johnson y a Richard Nixon.
