Want to read Genesis Chapter 3 of the Bible?

The Bible Project will be me posting one book of the Bible one chapter at a time. I’d like to thank my mother for the inspiration! If you missed the past entry, don’t forget to read Genesis Chapter 2.

Below is the third chapter of the Book of Genesis (The Serpent):

NOW THE SERPENT WAS MORE CRAFTY THAN ANY OF THE WILD ANIMALS THE LORD GOD HAD MADE. HE SAID TO THE WOMAN, “DID GOD REALLY SAY, “YOU MUST NOT EAT FROM ANY TREE IN THE GARDEN?’”

THE WOMAN SAID TO THE SERPENT, “WE MAY EAT FRUIT FROM THE TREES IN THE GARDEN, BUT GOD DID SAY, ‘YOU MUST NOT EAT FRUIT FROM THE TREE THAT IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GARDEN, AND YOU MUST NOT TOUCH IT, OR YOU WILL DIE.’”

“YOU WILL NOT SURELY DIE,” THE SERPENT SAID TO THE WOMAN. “FOR GOD KNOWS THAT WHEN YOU EAT OF IT YOUR EYES WILL BE OPENED, AND YOU WILL BE LIKE GOD, KNOWING GOOD AND EVIL.”

WHEN THE WOMAN SAW THAT THE FRUIT OF THE TREE WAS GOOD FOR FOOD AND PLEASING TO THE EYE, AND ALSO DESIRABLE FOR GAINING WISDOM, SHE TOOK SOME AND ATE IT. SHE ALSO GAVE SOME TO HER HUSBAND, WHO WAS WITH HER, AND HE ATE IT. THEN THE EYES OF BOTH OF THEM WERE OPENED, AND THEY REALIZED THEY WERE NAKED; SO THEY SEWED FIG LEAVES TOGEHTER AND MADE COVERINGS FOR THEMSELVES.

THEN THE MAN AND HIS WIFE HEARD THE SOUND OF THE LORD GOD AS HE WAS WALKING IN THE GARDEN IN THE COOL OF THE DAY, AND THEY HID FROM THE LORD GOD AMONG THE TREES OF THE GARDEN. BUT THE LORD GOD CALLED TO THE MAN, “WHERE ARE YOU?”

HE ANSWERED, “I HEARD YOU IN THE GARDEN, AND I WAS AFRAID BECAUSE I WAS NAKED; SO I HID.”
AND HE SAID, “WHO TOLD YOU THAT YOU WERE NAKED? HAVE YOU EATEN FROM THE TREE THAT I COMMANDED YOU NOT TO EAT FROM?”
THE MAN SAID, “THE WOMAN YOU PUT HERE WITH ME. SHE GAVE ME SOME FRUIT FROM THE TREE, AND I ATE IT.”

THEN THE LORD GOD SAID TO THE WOMAN, “WHAT IS THIS YOU HAVE DONE?”
THE WOMAN SAID, “THE SERPENT DECEIVED ME, AND I ATE.”

SO THE LORD GOD SAID TO THE SERPENT, “BECAUSE YOU HAVE DONE THIS, CURSED ARE YOU ABOVE ALL THE LIVESTOCK AND ALL THE WILD ANIMALS! YOU WILL CRAWL ON YOUR BELLY AND YOU WILL EAT DUST ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIFE. AND I WILL PUT ENMITY BETWEEN YOU AND THE WOMAN, AND BETWEEN YOUR OFFSPRING AND HERS; HE WILL CRUSH YOU HEAD, AND YOU WILL STRIKE HIS HEEL.”

TO THE WOMAN HE SAID,”I WILL GREATLY INCREASE YOUR PAINS IN CHILDBEARING; WITH PAIN YOU WILL GIVE BIRTH TO CHILDREN. YOUR DESIRE WILL BE FOR YOUR HUSBAND, AND HE WILL RULE OVER YOU.”

TO ADAM HE SAID, “BECAUSE YOU LISTENED TO YOUR WIFE AND ATE FROM THE TREE ABOUT WHICH I COMMANDED YOU, ‘YOU MUST NOT EAT OF IT,’ CURSED IS THE GROUND BECAUSE OF YOU; THROUGH PAINFUL TOIL YOU WILL EAT OF IT ALL THE DAYS OF YOUR LIFE. IT WILL PRODUCE THORNS AND THISTLES FOR YOU, AND YOU WILL EAT THE PLANTS OF THE FIELD.
BY THE SWEAT OF YOUR BROW YOU WILL EAT YOUR FOOD UNTIL YOU RETURN TO THE GROUND, SINCE FROM IT YOU WERE TAKEN; FOR DUST YOU ARE AND TO DUST YOU WILL RETURN.”

ADAM NAMED HIS WIFE EVE, BECAUSE SHE WOULD BECOME THE MOTHER OF ALL THE LIVING.
THE LORD GOD MADE GARMENTS OF SKIN FOR ADAM AND HIS WIFE AND CLOTHED THEM. AND THE LORD GOD SAID, “THE MAN HAS NOW BECOME LIKE ONE OF US, KNOWING GOOD AND EVIL. HE MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO REACH OUT HIS HAND AND TAKE ALSO FROM THE TREE OF LIFE AND EAT, AND LIVE FOREVER.”

SO THE LORD GOD BANISHED HIM FROM THE GARDEN OF EDEN TO WORK THE GROUND FROM WHICH HE HAD BEEN TAKEN. AFTER HE DROVE THE MAN OUT, HE PLACED ON THE EAST SIDE OF THE GARDEN OF EDEN CHERUBIM AND A FLAMING SWORD FLASHING BACK AND FORTH TO GUARD THE WAY TO THE TREE OF LIFE.

I’m beginning the journey of discovering my own intuition.
So, tonight I am sitting in my large open framed pyramid doing some quiet time and meditation. My cats often join me during this time. Scootie, the female of the 2 cats, is actively involved in this process.
While I was giving her some healing energy with my hands, I saw the usual dark space… seems like outer space… and then the serpents… serpents of fire… they were doing the dance of the double helix in front of me.. all ablaze. Dunno what it means yet, but it was very cool

One of the most enjoyable aspects of “All the Pretty Snakes… (& Bellydancers”

One of the most enjoyable aspects of “All the Pretty Snakes… (& Bellydancers”) is the coming together of so many creative, talented individuals. Last Friday we took over EPICA studios for a multi-person shoot with Sherri Wheatley and friends (snake and otherwise). This particular shoot brought a lot of anticipation and agonizing over every detail as it was by far our most complex shoot from a costuming and makeup standpoint.

In come Amy and Melissa! At Karma’s Halloween party, these two sisters (along with third sister Meredith) did a zombie-inspired number with makeup to boot! So Lee asked Amy if she had any experience with costume makeup, explained to her the concept of our trying to achieve the look of stone, and soon thereafter started communicating frequently about how best to accomplish said goal. Lee was busy all last week starching thrift store shirts to get a frozen, statue-d look With some professional makeup purchased from Cinema Secrets in Los Angeles, a few makeup brushes, sponges and whatnot, and most importantly, some very enthusiastic and talented participants, we were ready.

The day of the shoot dragged – it just seemed like it couldn’t happen soon enough! But then in rolled Omarr, Tonantzin and Zenen… followed shortly by Amy and Melissa. Slowly but surely the whirlwind of creative energy started up… clothes were flying as we fitted the men for their statue costumes. Once that was done, the sisters were out in the parking lot adding finishing spray-paint touches to the starched clothes which Karma then finished. Then the sisters (aka makeup artists extraordinaires) and I soon had the men lined up in another room and were making the transition come to life. We coated their faces first with gray, then with a darker color to shadow, and white goop to highlight; those of us doing the makeup had our hands and wrists covered in it. Amy and Melissa were so expert at applying the makeup, and also extremely patient with me as they instructed me in the ways of costume makeup (I jumped in because it looked like so much fun, plus time was of the essence)! It took almost an hour and half and 4 sets of hands to transform 3 men into statues. It was so much fun!!!

There is no way we would have accomplished this shoot without the help of our volunteers: Amy, Melissa, Karma, Omarr, and Zenen, and even Tonantzin and Sada for their moral support and snake-holding ability. We hope the effect will be mesmerizing, however we are true believers that the process is just as satisfying, if not sometimes more, than the outcome itself. It was a lot of fun having an extended team of snake-charmers around and we’re so appreciative that they endured more than 5 hours of “All the Pretty Snakes…” up close and in person!

Poets and Painters inspire each other. Mary Oliver’s poetry is my intimate companion. Recently I painted this picture which is about Edisto Island, South Carolina, our small undeveloped barrier island, the last sea island in South Carolina and one that has escaped the developers, so far. Snakes are a large part of Edisto, as it is thick with the jungle brush of native canopy. Charmingly we have a real Serpentarium on the island, built by two brothers, Ted and Heyward Clamp, who capture the healing venom, educate the public about snakes, and provide natural habitat for the reptiles.

painting by Charlotte Hutson-Wrenn '09

The Black Snake

by Mary Oliver

When the black snake
flashed onto the morning road,
and the truck could not swerve—
death, that is how it happens.

Now he lies hooped and useless
as an old bicycle tire.
I stop the car
and carry him into the bushes.

He is as cool and gleaming
as a braided whip, he is as beautiful and quiet
as a dead brother.
I leave him under the leaves

and drive on, thinking
about death, its suddenness.
its terrible weight,
its certain coming. Yet under

reason burns a brighter fire
which the bones
have always preferred.
It is the story of endless good fortune.
It says to oblivion: not me!

It is the light at the center of every cell.
It is what sent the snake coiling and flowing forward
happily all spring through the green leaves before
he came to the road.

When you think of a dragon, what image do you conjure up in your mind?

Do you picture a serpent like beast with a long muscular body and a fanned tail that can twist itself into coils? Or is your beast a huge creature than can rear up onto its hind legs and breathe fire? Personally, as a woman with a phobia of all things serpent like, my dragon would definately be the kind with legs, and he’d probably be purple.

What got me thinking about dragons in particular, was that as I was updating the mystical amulets & talismans section in the store I couldn’t fail but notice just how many dragons were represented in there, in all their many shapes and forms. There are Celtic Dragons, fantasy dragons, dragon skulls and a whole lot more.

For a creature perportedly only to exist in myth and legend we certainly hold some strong beliefs in its magickal abilities, or else why would we still design and wear jewellery that carries its image or form?

Once again, I’m not just disappointed, I’m disgusted.

No, it’s not the Sexiest Man Alive thing; I didn’t really expect to win that.

I’m disgusted with the “true conservatives” and “Tea Party” Republicans who apparently have no idea what it is they want; and who obviously have money, time and energy to burn on the altar of their “War On Terror.”

It’s hard enough to figure out what it is that you attack. But what do you defend? What do you want?

O ye idolaters! No amount of flag-waving, no Democrat Demonizing will save you from your hypocrisy, immorality and failure.

After the 911 attacks when the war drums announced our intentions to the world, only Ron Paul of Texas wanted to legitimize/legalize our violence with a constitutional, congressional declaration of war against Iraq.

As Republicans bared their teeth at Dr. Paul, then-Chairman Henry Hyde hissed (imagine the serpent in the Garden of Eden):

“There are things in the Constitution that have been overtaken by events, by time. Declaration of war is one of them. …There are things no longer relevant to a modern society. …Why declare war if you don’t have to? …We are saying to the President, use your judgment. So, to demand that we declare war is to strengthen something to death. You have got a hammerlock on this situation, and it is not called for. Inappropriate, anachronistic, it isn’t done anymore…”

Now these Palin-worshipping, Cheney sycophants are whining about the legal consequences they created?

Y’all claim to support the constitutions, but you don’t when it matters. Y’all claim to oppose the “big government policies” of “the left,” but you never have.

I admire the rhetoric of Ronald Reagan as much as anybody. But even FDR ran a tighter ship.

No Republican Governor or President in the past 60 years has cut the size, cost, intrusiveness or unconstitutionality of government. The last USA President to actually sign a reduction of spending and debt was JFK. Nixon created the EPA, fired up the War on Drugs, pushed socialist wage and price controls, and in general, delivered what Democrats had only promised.

I don’t think Republicans believe what they say they believe now.

I do understand, to a point. Nobody alive remembers how free markets build schools, roads and hospitals; or how they dole out charity. Nobody alive can extricate the politics of today from the technology to which we truly owe our present comforts. We can’t exactly calculate the opportunity costs of government or factually claim how life would be if we hadn’t gone authoritarian.

But are you blind to the failure all around us?

Every day there’s a new “conservative” organization claiming to be the true torch-bearers for the Founding Fathers. They’re continually crying out for more money, more organization and more fresh blood. But what, exactly, do they propose doing?

Hmmm?

Yes, they’d like to replace some politicians here and there. But to what end? We’ve swapped parties and people many times to ever-worse effect.

The people and parties are not the issue. Republicans vote against those who promise to cut government down to its constitutional size, and instead vote for candidates who don’t even promise to cut anything.

Presidential Candidate Ron Paul set fundraising records and energized young people like no other Republican. Republicans had a candidate that, at long, long last, truly and fully represented the “conservative” rhetoric spoken in Kiwanis halls and churches and JBS meetings for the past several decades. But instead of supporting a champion of Liberty and Justice, the GOP did its worst to hamstring his chances and proved that for all their patriotic talk, they’re more problem than solution.

I’ve experienced this personally. As GOP candidate for Indiana’s 7th US CD I’d personally experienced Republican leadership from national level down to individual voters. I know their sick game.

What do they actually propose to do about our failed authoritarian monetary, political and social policies? Well, I know they’re upset about some perceived epidemic of gay marriages. I know that many go apoplectic over Obama’s citizenship. A few will say some things about foreign invaders pouring across our southern border…but only when it’s clear that they can do nothing about it.

They complain about anti-Christs and crosses in the desert. They complain about foreign nations, greenhouse gas and pot smokers. They still complain about flag burning.

But what do they really want to do? Has anything changed since they had all the power in the nation and set us up for disaster? Has there been some constitutional epiphany that I’ve missed?

I’m asking.

I’m listening…

The Ouroboros has been said to have a meaning of infinity or wholeness. In the age-old image of the Ouroboros lies the thought of devouring oneself and turning oneself into a circulatory process, for it was clear to the more astute alchemists that the prima materia of the art was man himself.

Introduction

Lire: 2:23-25.

(Jean. 7:50-52; 19:38,39)

All cultures that know them have found serpents fascinating. Indeed serpents are said to ‘‘fascinate

All cultures that know them have found serpents fascinating. Indeed serpents are said to ‘‘fascinate’’ their prey, cast a spell on them with a look; human cultures seem to have fallen under their sway. Snakes can be extremely dangerous, being both venomous and ‘‘subtle’’ or sneaky; they strike without warning from grass or coverts; they can look beautiful in their glittering multi-colored skin; they creep on their bellies but can rear up; they shed their skin and seem rejuvenated; they sidle or meander; and in legend at least some can fly, some swallow their own tails, and some have a head at each end. The symbolic possibilities are rich and often ambiguous.

The most important serpent for western literature, of course, is the one in the garden of Eden, who persuaded Eve to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil and thus brought about the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the garden and the advent of death. He was ‘‘more subtil than any beast of the field’’ and simple Eve was no match for him (Gen. 3.1–7). St. Paul worries that ‘‘as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty,’’ the minds of Christians might be ‘‘corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ’’ (2 Cor. 11.3). The serpent was thus connected with knowledge or wisdom, though a false or even fatal knowledge, and with human mortality. Behind these connections may lie the notion that serpents are themselves immortal because they shed their skins; their wisdom might be due to their great age or to their intimate relation with the earth (they even look wise). In the Sumerian/Babylonian Gilgamesh epic, a snake denies Gilgamesh the plant of immortality by snatching it, eating it, and then shedding its skin; a structuralist would call this a variant of the Eden story. As for wisdom, despite the serpent’s evil connotations, Christ calls on his followers to be ‘‘wise as serpents’’ (Matt. 10.16).

In the Christian scheme the serpent of Eden became ‘‘the great dragon,’’ ‘‘that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world’’ (Rev. 12.9); ‘‘Oure firste foo, the serpent Sathanas,’’ in Chaucer’s phrase (Prioress’s Tale 1748); ‘‘The infernal Serpent’’ of Milton (PL 1.34). Goethe’s devil Mephistopheles invokes ‘‘my aunt, the famous snake’’ (Faust I 335). The ‘‘dreadful Dragon’’ that Spenser’s Redcrosse Knight vanquishes after a terrible battle (FQ 1.11.4–55) is the dragon of Revelation, and the Knight reenacts the victory of Michael and the angels (Rev. 12.7).

The older belief that serpents are wise, and not just subtle or cunning, was revived in the gnostic sects of snake-worshippers, known as the Naasenes (from Hebrew nahas, ‘‘serpent’’) and Ophites (from Greek ophis, ‘‘serpent’’). They seem to have believed that the serpent in the garden was trying to bring true wisdom and divinity to Adam and Eve, who were trapped in the fallen world by a wicked creator god; as the embodiment of gnosis or wisdom the serpent descends again as Christ. Something of this inversion of Christian symbols may be found in Shelley, who stages an elaborate allegorical contest between ‘‘An Eagle and a Serpent wreathed in flight’’: the Serpent, ‘‘the great Spirit of Good did creep among / The nations of mankind, and every tongue / Cursed and blasphemed him as he passed; for none / Knew good from evil’’ (Laon and Cythna 193, 373–76). Keats’s poem Lamia might be taken as another swerve from orthodoxy, for the lovely serpent-woman whom Lycius loves is defeated by a cold skeptical philosopher; the wisdom of this serpent is imagination and love.

Another biblical serpent is the one Moses made out of brass at God’s command, the sight of which cured the Israelites of snakebite (Num. 21.8–9). Much later this piece of magical homeopathy did not sit well with Hezekiah, who destroyed it (2 Kgs 18.4). Nonetheless John cites it as a type of Christ crucified, faith in whom cures us of all ills (John 3.14–15).

‘‘Serpent’’ comes from Latin serpens, serpent-, from a root meaning ‘‘crawl’’ or ‘‘creep.’’ A meandering river could be called ‘‘a serpent river’’ (Jonson, ‘‘To Robert Wroth’’ 18) without evoking Satan. The river in London’s Hyde Park is called The Serpentine, as several Greek rivers were called Ophis or Drakon. When Milton describes the early rivers of creation ‘‘With serpent error wandering’’ (PL 7.302), however, it is hard to rule out suggestions of the Fall. If to sin is to wander in error (Latin errare means ‘‘wander’’), a snake’s sidling, meandering motion seconds its evil associations.

In Homer snakes are often omens. The Greeks recall a ‘‘great sign’’: a snake (drakon) devours eight sparrow nestlings and their mother, and the seer interprets it to mean that nine years must pass before they sack Troy (Iliad 2.301–30); it is as if the snake symbolizes time, or eternity, which swallows the bird-years. Another omen is the appearance of the eagle with a serpent in its talons; the serpent stings the bird, who lets it drop; the Trojan seer takes the portent to mean they will not drive the Greeks away (12.200–29).

A similar image grips Orestes in Aeschylus’ Choephoroe. He sees himself and his sister as fledglings of eagle-Agamemnon, who was killed by a deadly viper (echidna), Clytemnestra (246–59). The imagery continues in the play: the viper stands for underhand domestic treachery, as it does in Sophocles’ Antigone, where Creon denounces Ismene as ‘‘a viper lurking in the house’’ (531). Close to this sense of betrayal is Aesop’s fable of ‘‘The Snake and the Rustic’’: the peasant rescues a frozen snake by placing it in his bosom, but when it thaws out it bites him. ‘‘You are nourishing a viper in your bosom’’ (Petronius, Satyricon 77) became proverbial: ‘‘O familier foo, . . . // Lyk to the naddre [adder] in bosom sly untrewe’’ (Chaucer, Merchant’s Tale 1784–86); ‘‘O villains, vipers, . . . // Snakes, in my heart-blood warmed, that sting my heart!’’ (Shakespeare, R2 3.2.129–31). Racine’s Oreste warns Pyrrhus against raising the son of Hector in his home ‘‘lest this serpent reared in your bosom / Punish you one day for having saved him’’ (Andromaque 1.2.167–68). Dryden’s Antony accuses Cleopatra and Dolabella of being ‘‘serpents / Whom I have in my kindly bosom warmed, / Till I am stung to death’’ (All for Love 4.1.464–66). This snake thus becomes the emblem of ingratitude. ‘‘How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is,’’ Lear cries, ‘‘To have a thankless child’’ (1.4.288–89).

The snake in the bosom grew more internal and metaphorical until it could represent an entirely mental pain or poison. In Envy’s bosom, according to Spenser, ‘‘secretly there lay / An hatefull Snake’’ (FQ 1.4.31), while Malbecco, followed by jealousy and scorn, was ‘‘So shamefully forlorne of womankynd, / That, as a Snake, still lurked in his wounded mynd’’ (3.10.55). Cowper seems to echo Milton on rivers as he begins his ‘‘Progress of Error’’ by asking the Muse to sing how ‘‘The serpent error twines round human hearts’’ (4). ‘‘Every mortal,’’ says Chénier, ‘‘hides in his heart, even from his own eyes, / Ambition, the insidious serpent’’ (‘‘Le Jeu de Paume’’ st. 15).

The most common snake in the mind or heart since the Romantics, at least, is remorse or guilt. Coleridge addresses a dissolute man who gaily laughs during nightly orgies ‘‘while thy remembered Home / Gnaws like a viper at thy secret heart!’’ (‘‘Religious Musings’’ 285–86); later he dismisses his own ‘‘viper thoughts’’ of remorse in ‘‘Dejection’’ (94). Wordsworth writes of a man suffering from ‘‘the stings of viperous remorse’’ (1850 Prelude 9.576). Shelley imagines a bloated vice-ridden king trying to sleep, but ‘‘conscience, that undying serpent, calls / Her venomous brood to their nocturnal task’’ (Queen Mab 3.61–62). Pushkin’s Eugene Onegin is ‘‘gnawed by the snake of memory and repentance’’ (1.46); Pushkin himself, in the darkness, feels ‘‘the bite of all the burning serpents of remorse’’ (‘‘Remembrance’’).

Homer compares Paris’ sudden fear at the sight of Menelaus to that of a man who comes upon a snake and suddenly steps back ‘‘and the shivers come over his body, / and he draws back and away, cheeks seized with green pallor’’ (Iliad 3.33–35, trans. Lattimore; see Virgil, Aeneid 2.379–81). Half a line of Virgil’s, ‘‘a cold snake lurks in the grass’’ (Eclogues 3.93), has led to a proverbial phrase. Fortuna, according to Dante’s Virgil (who quotes himself), shifts the world’s goods about according to her judgment, ‘‘which is hidden like a snake in grass’’ (Inferno 7.84). Spenser’s Despair comes ‘‘creeping close, as Snake in hidden weedes’’ (1.9.28). This image merges with the biblical account of the subtle serpent in the garden, and with the traitor cherished in one’s home, to yield the symbolism of King Hamlet’s murder. The Ghost tells his son ‘‘ ‘Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard, / A serpent stung me’’ (1.5.35–36); young Hamlet has already felt that the world is ‘‘an unweeded garden / That grows to seed; things rank and gross in nature / Possess it merely’’ (1.2.135–37); the serpent turns out to be the king’s brother.

Until now, we’ve been primarily reaching out to the bellydance lovers for the dissemintation of “All the Pretty Snakes…(& Bellydancers)”. However we have a whole other audience to whom we want to cater! Therefore this coming weekend we are going to attend the Herp World Expo at the Pasadena Convention Center. Personally I never even knew there were reptilies-only conventions out there, and I certainly never thought I’d attend one.

A lot of us involved in “”All the Pretty Snakes…(& Bellydancers)” are turning over a new leaf with our attitudes towards snakes. And it’s raised the question – why are we so afraid of them when we know so very little? Where did they get such a bad rep (stories passed down, urban myths)? And more curiously, where and when in the life of a snake lover did they learn to appreciate and love snakes rather than be phobic?

Snake lovers (or haters) — please share your experiences with us! Include your email address; we’ll select and highlight our Top 3 favorites and send you a free calendar of “All the Pretty Snakes… (& Bellydancers)” as a thank you!

Satan in the Bible is called the deceiver and the father of lies. He has had an explicit agenda in

Satan in the Bible is called the deceiver and the father of lies. He has had an explicit agenda in place ever since he deceived Eve and caused Adam to sin. There are a number of things that Satan doesn’t want you to know about him and I’m going to tell you some of them right now.

1. Satan Doesn’t Want You To Know That He Exists

I know now as a Christian that Satan exists, but there was a time that I didn’t believe it. Many people are in the same boat. People are generally very oblivious to spiritual things, because they are consumed with natural things like drugs, alcohol, sex, money, power, fame, sports, food, music, etc. Not only do people not know that Satan and demons exist, they don’t know that they themselves are a spirit being living in a body. Oh, sure there is a fascination with the supernatural, on TV and in movies and games. But these are generally put out as a distraction to the truth. Satan promotes such shows and activity to gain access into the minds of people to deceive them further.

2. Satan Doesn’t Want You To Know How He Operates

Recently I wrote a Blog on was there a physical talking snake in the Garden of Eden that deceived Eve. If you read that you know that there was not. It is illegal for Satan to tempt people supernaturally and that is not how he generally operates. TV shows and movies that promote supernatural activity are a pure distraction to how Satan comes to you and operates. Satan uses, thoughts, ideas and suggestions to influence and control your behavior. If you have been having thoughts and ideas about suicide they are demonically inspired. The source of evil thoughts and ideas are from Satan.

We should probably differentiate between Christians and non-Christians. Satan can not possess a Christian, because God dwells in their spirits. There is not room for the both of them in there. But Satan can still attack a Christian physically and mentally. To a non-believer, they can be possessed by many evil spirits as told to us in the Bible. So it is important to know the difference and them understand how Satan operates normally in the world. I know there are clear exceptions that I have heard from people’s testimonies, but right now I’m just speaking from what I know in the Bible.

3. Satan Can’t Be Everywhere At Once

In the Old Testament we have a greatly misunderstood book of the Bible, The Book of Job. I won’t attempt to get into this book, but I will just draw out some valuable information that we can learn from it. In this story, Satan is said to appear before God in heaven. God asks Satan, where have you been? Satan’s reply is going to and fro across the earth and from walking up and down in it. From that one statement we can learn a lot. Number one, is that Satan is not on the earth when he said this. Number two, Satan is not everywhere all at once. If he has to travel from place to place he can only be in one place at a time. That is interesting isn’t it?

In the New Testament we get some very similar information from the following verse:

1 Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour;

You see the same connotations given to us in this verse. Satan is stalking about the earth looking for someone that he can attack. The implications are he can’t attack everybody. You also see that he has to walk from place to place. We can conclude from these two verses that Satan is not everywhere at once. Now having said all of that we don’t know how many demons Satan has under his control. Revelation tells us a 1/3 of the angels fell with him. But we don’t know how many there were to start with.

4. Satan Doesn’t Want You To Know His Time Is Short

Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens and ye that dsell in them, Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

This verse informs us that Satan is pissed off. Why? Because he knows his time is very short. Satan is aware of an end time. You did realize that, didn’t you? Many people in the world are oblivious that the end is near. They think everything has happened the same way from the beginning and everything will just continue on like this for ever. Satan and the demons are aware that time is short.

Matthew 8:29 And behold, they cried out saying What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? are thou come hither to torment us before the time?

These are the words of the demons that possessed a man where Jesus was going. These demons exclaimed who exactly Jesus was. Why were they questioning Jesus’ right to be there? Then they ask him have you come to torment us before the time. What time are they talking about? It is amazing that these spiritual beings are aware that there is coming a time of torment. All of this occurs still today, men walk about clueless to the times and the seasons while Satan and his forces know that they are almost done.

5. Satan Doesn’t Want You To Know He Was Defeated

Colossians 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

We can see that Satan was defeated by what Jesus did on the cross. The blood of Jesus not only forgave our sins, it caused the defeat of Satan. The term spoiled is a military term when an army would take a city, they would take the wealth of the enemy and leave them with nothing of value. Genghis Kahn, Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Hitler, etc. we can go on and on, but the conquering army would always walk away with the wealth of those that were conquered. Here is an informative verse of scripture that also helps us to see what Jesus has done:

1 Corinthians 2:8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

You see from this verse we can clearly see that Satan now has a major problem. Something that Jesus did, caused his status to change. Something that Jesus did doomed him and determined his destiny. We have only seen a fraction of the things that Jesus did on the cross. This is an example, of there many things that we do not have the full story on as of yet. We can make a broad assumption, that based upon this verse the death of Jesus Christ sealed Satan’s future.

So why if Satan was defeated, wasn’t he just thrown into the pit and that was the end of it? It is an interesting question, that most have never tried to answer. Satan has a right to be here as long as Adam has a right to be here. The world was given to Adam, Adam gave it to Satan. So we in effect see a sub-lease being established. As long as Adam’s lease or time period is valid, Satan’s time period is valid. We know that this time is now very short. If you have been reading my blog we can see that the time period of human history as prophesied by Genesis 1 is approximately 6000 years. We can calculate that we are very, very close to the end of that time period right now.

6. Satan Doesn’t Want You To Know You Have Authority Over Him

Did you notice that earlier I quoted a scripture that said Satan was going about, seeking those who he could devour. Apparently he cannot come into your house and take everything from you unless you let him or permit him to do something to cause it to happen. If you could just find out what opens the door for the enemy to come in, I bet you would stop it. I don’t think I have a complete answer to that question, but I have seen at least part of the answer. We know sin, allows Satan access into our lives. Then in Hosea 4:6 it tells us that God’s people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge. So in effect we can see that ignorance or not knowing the right things, can allow Satan into our lives. What else opens the door to the enemy? I believe not knowing that you have been given authority over Satan will allow him to come in and attempt to work his work. Here is what Jesus told us:

Luke 10:19 Behold I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

If you don’t understand Biblical symbolism you will immediately get the idea that you should be able to walk in a viper pit and not get bitten. But that is not what Jesus is talking about. He is talking about the “serpent” that deceived Eve and that was Satan. Scorpions refer to demonic or evil spirits. Understanding these symbolic references are essential to understanding the Bible correctly. Not everything in the Bible is literal. This verse tells us that Jesus gave us power over these spiritual forces. This word for “power” actually means “authority” or “jurisdiction” over these powers. The term translated as “power” of the enemy is a completely different word that means “miraculous ability”. You learn from this verse that Satan still has ability to do some amazing things in the earth, but Jesus said I give you authority over what he can do to you. You might not be able to stop what he does to your neighbor, but you can stop what he does to you and your family. This spiritual authority must be exercised by you on or before the attack takes place. How do you do that? Maybe I’ll get into that in another blog.

Par Hefgé, collaboration spéciale. Diantre! Ce que les gens peuvent être pathétiques! A-H1N1 est rée

Par Hefgé, collaboration spéciale. Diantre!

Adam’s Page

NoNavelXY: @LordPlanetMaker created me today.

NoNavelXY: Some angels came in to work on @LordPlanetMaker’s “light” project. It’s still in beta. Stubbed my toe.

NoNavelXY: Got dominion over plants today.

NoNavelXY: The boss liked how I did with plants and I was given dominion over animals on a trial basis.

NoNavelXY: @LordPlanetMaker lectured me about getting drunk with the tigers. Named tigers today. #animals

NoNavelXY: @LordPlanetMaker keeps having me name things. This is getting old. How many more beetles do I have to put up with?

NoNavelXY: @LordPlanetMaker showed me the prototypes for his “woman” project. Looks promising.

NoNavelXY: Was introduced to @RibLadyXOXO today. She seems nice.

NoNavelXY: Walked around the Garden with @RibLadyXOXO today. We have a lot in common. Not big on jazz, sports or wearing pants.

NoNavelXY: Got married today. My side hurts.

NoNavelXY: Ate pineapples today. Named pineapples.

NoNavelXY: Met Serpent today. Nice guy, @RibLadyXOXO seems to get along with him.

NoNavelXY: Pissed off the man. Got banished from #thegarden. This is totally BOGUS.

NoNavelXY: @LordPlanetMaker has a weird way of punishing. He got rid of the snake’s legs. Seems like he was doing that snake a favor.

NoNavelXY: Still mad at @RibLadyXOXO. I’m over the whole “being banished” thing. Just don’t like her passive-aggressive post it notes.

NoNavelXY: @RibLadyXOXO is such a crampy bitch. Are there any other women around? Damn.

NoNavelXY: Tried out #toiling today.

NoNavelXY: I’m feeling pretty fruitful. I think I feel like multiplying. How dumb is that?

Eve’s Page

RibLadyXOXO: Got created today. Met a cute boy.

RibLadyXOXO: Me and @NoNavelXY have so much in common. It turns out we both know @LordPlanetMaker.

RibLadyXOXO: Some stupid snake with legs gave me an apple. WTF?

RibLadyXOXO: That snake keeps giving me puppy snake eyes.

RibLadyXOXO: Ok ok. Trying apple.

RibLadyXOXO: Apples taste good. I now can distinguish between good things and not good things.

RibLadyXOXO: Ever notice how naked everyone is?

RibLadyXOXO: This apple is cool. I’m giving it to @NoNavelXY.

RibLadyXOXO: @LordPlanetMaker got really mad and said he told us we weren’t supposed to eat forbidden fruit.

RibLadyXOXO: What was @LordPlanetMaker thinking? Never tell someone something is forbidden. It has the opposite effect!

RibLadyXOXO: We’re banned from that really cool garden.

RibLadyXOXO: Anyway, I’m feeling my first menstrual cramps coming on. That’s what @NoNavelXY calls them anyway.

RibLadyXOXO: @NoNavelXY is an idiot. They should be called sharp knife stabby feelings not menstrual cramps.

RibLadyXOXO: Getting pretty sick of @NoNavelXY calling me the “cramp tramp.”

RibLadyXOXO: Those cramps went away. Thank goodness.

RibLadyXOXO: I’m feeling fruitful. I am feeling this urge to multiply.

RibLadyXOXO: @LordPlanetMaker seems dumb sometimes. I don’t know why @NoNavelXY listens to him so much.

‘

RibLadyXOXO: @LordPlanetMaker told @NoNavelXY and me to multiply. I’m not so sure want little tiny Adams and Eves running around.

RibLadyXOXO: I think I am going to build my own garden that’s even neater than the previous one.

Serpent’s Page

MrBellyCreepeth: Oh man, I love this tree. I hope someone eats of it.

MrBellyCreepeth: This tree seems like it has a lot of knowledge.

MrBellyCreepeth: I better give its fruit to @RibLadyXOXO since she’s dimwitted like @NoNavelXY.

MrBellyCreepeth: Yes! She finally ate it. Now I can talk about ethics with someone.

MrBellyCreepeth: Hey guys what’s goin—OHMYGODWHEREAREMYLEGS?!

MrBellyCreepeth: Nice, those legs were pretty unnecessary. @LordPlanetMaker seems like an Intelligent Designer.
