Tomorrow Windows 7, the replacement for the much maligned Windows Vista will be released to the gene

Tomorrow Windows 7, the replacement for the much maligned Windows Vista will be released to the general public. It is expected to wash away the public’s very negative view of Windows Vista, which was plagued early on with slow performance, driver issues and buggy hardware. Windows XP which was released 8 years ago in 2001 continues to be the most widely used version of Windows at over 65% of all computers in use. XP has remained popular due to the early reviews of Vista.

Vista has, to give it it’s credit, gotten much better with the advent of Service Packs 1 & 2. However, performance remains below XP on similar and even at times, better hardware. Driver issues still plague Vista systems for legacy software and hardware. Windows 7 is receiving much better reviews and certain versions, IE Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate all include Windows XP Mode. XP Mode is a virtualized client that runs inside of 7 with a licensed version of XP Pro SP3. This is for professionals who rely on legacy applications that won’t run under the new Windows 7 core. New tech allows apps and software that runs inside XP Mode to integrate seamlessly with 7.

Windows 7 also has a notable feel of increased performance over it’s bloated and buggy predecessor. I personally have used both the Ultimate Release Client as both a virtualized machine and as my main OS and it has been excellent, booting and shutting down noticeably faster than Vista.

Now here is where the bad things come in. I’ll give my take on what I don’t like in Windows 7. First off the taskbar. Actually this falls in the so-so category. I like the jump lists and ability to pin things to the taskbar. But I don’t like the appearance and the larger buttons. To be fair, one can shrink them to Vista size, but it takes getting used to the new look and feel of them. The second thing I don’t like is the positioning of the ’show desktop’ button. When you are used to the button being in one place since Windows 98, it is disconcerting to find it all the way on the other side of the screen. Lastly, the Windows Media Player 12 is somewhat of a nuisance. While it is a good thing that it supports more codecs than ever in the past, I actually like the ability to do a lot with my media right from the library tab.

Aside from that, Windows 7 is all things that Vista should have been. While I will miss Vista’s quirky tools like Movie Maker, Photo Gallery, Windows Mail and Meeting Space, I will be upgrading my system to Windows 7 in the weeks after tomorrow. Windows 7 is a large improvement in performance, aesthetics and overall just allowing me to do what I need to do without the incessant lockups and UAC prompts.

Also so wirklich gar keine… nix… gar nix klappte.

Übrigens:a

Hier isset schön…

Today I finally ditched the old Windows XP and moved to the fresh new Windows Vista. But, for my hor

Today I finally ditched the old Windows XP and moved to the fresh new Windows Vista. But, for my horror, two Service Packs were released for Vista. And as I quickly realized, there is no way (Technically and recommended by Microsoft) of slipstreaming Any of the Service Packs. I saw a way of slipstreaming SP1, however I haven’t seen one for SP2.

The annoying fact that Service Pack 2 (for Windows Vista) requires Service Pack 1 to be present on the machine, made me upset a little bit about Vista: None of the Previous Windows OSs, including Windows XP, needed any Service Pack to be present. Maybe it’s something about Vista’s improved NT-Kernel, but that’s a matter for another post.

So, here comes the user tips for installing Service Packs on Windows Vista:

Don’t install both SPs one after another, because of tip No’2.

After SP1 installation, you should restart your computer several times to see if SP1 installation went fine, and it does not slow down Vista, or anything else that you are not satisfied with. If everything’s good, you will probably want to clean the old files that were replaced by the SP1 installation, to save some Disk Space*. To do so, open the Command Prompt, and type “vsp1cln”. Press ‘y’ when prompted.

Install SP2

After SP2 installation, do the same thing that we did for SP1: restart the computer a few, check everything’s OK. After that, you can once again clean old files an gain some Disk Space**, by typing “compcln” at the Command Prompt, and pressing ‘y’ when prompted to.

So, i’m done. If you have anything to say or some more tips to offer, make sure to comment down the post.

* By doing so, you are “Sticking” SP1 to the Vista Installation, meaning, you cannot remove SP1 in the future.
** So does in here, you are once again “Sticiking” SP2, so removing it in the future will not be an option.

The slipstream process of Office 2007 is a simple two step process:

Extract the SP1 file

Copy the MSP files to your install share

Download Office 2007 SP1 here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/. Save the file on the root of your D:\ drive. Create a folder called D:\Office2007MSP\.

Extract the SP1 file with the following command:
D:\office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe /extract:D:\Office2007SP1MSP

Open the folder D:\OfficeSP1MSP

Copy all the *.msp files to the Updates folder on your install share.

If you run Setup.exe the setup wizard will install Office 2007 SP1.

installer boots from cd, comes up with Vista background, no window. After giving up (waiting 45 minutes),

Once booted: Ran windows update until I was told there were no important updates to install.
Installed Steam, Farcry 2 -
It told me I should have SP1 installed. I ran windows update, and it continued to say “there are no important updates to install”.

Searched web for info on installing SP1, foudn site telling me to run windows update.

Ran windows update again, this time it found an update! Installed it, and was told “there are important updates” to install.

Microsoft has fulfilled its promise of a quick delivery of a Release Candidate for SP2 for Windows V

Microsoft has fulfilled its promise of a quick delivery of a Release Candidate for SP2 for Windows Vista and Windows 2008 Server. Unfortunately, enterprises will see few worthwhile upgrades. There are some hardware and wireless improvements, but users and administrators will see the most beneficial upgrades to the search capabilities.

Microsoft officials March 5 followed through on their February promise to quickly deliver a Release Candidate for Service Pack 2 for both Windows Vista and Windows 2008 Server.

Unlike Service Pack 1 for Vista, which delivered such highly tangible benefits to the end user as streamlined UAC controls and faster file transfer speeds, eWEEK Labs’ preliminary explorations reveal Service Pack 2 delivers few significant updates to Vista users or administrators.

I installed Service Pack 2 on a pair of Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 x86 clients—one on a physical machine (a Dell XPS m1330) and a second on a VMware Workstation virtual instance. I found installation of the Five Language Standalone executable took between 21 and 27 minutes on my clean instances. When fully installed, I found that SP2 used about 1 GB of hard drive space, although Microsoft recommends clients targeted for upgrade have a minimum of 7 GB of free hard drive space (13 GB for 64-bit installations) for the update to complete.

To recover some of the hard drive space used by the service pack, Microsoft integrated the executable compcln.exe, which removes archived versions of operating system files replaced by SP2. In my tests, I was able to recover about 330 MB of space by running the command. However, I found that running compcln.exe removed my ability to uninstall the service pack. As such, administrators should only run the command on systems they are sure won’t need to be restored to a previous state.

Service Pack 2 is not a cumulative update, so administrators will need to ensure that clients targeted for upgrade to SP2 are already running Service Pack 1. Hotfix KB955430, a servicing stack that its documentation says “handles installation and removal of software updates, language packs, and optional windows features,” must be installed prior to SP2 deployment. The standalone executable includes this update as part of the installation, but administrators planning to deploy SP2 via WSUS will need to pre-deploy this hotfix.

Along with the usual collection of already-released security and functionality hotfixes included in the service pack, Microsoft also delivers a modest set of hardware enhancements—few of which will likely have much importance for those few enterprise administrators with Vista in their network. Among these improvements brought by SP2, Microsoft now claims support for VIA 64-bit processors and has integrated Blu-Ray recording into the operating system.

On the wireless side of things, Microsoft baked in support for Bluetooth 2.1 and delivered some incremental improvements to the operating system’s integrated wireless LAN capabilities. Specifically, Service Pack 2 promises faster Wi-Fi reconnections when returning the OS from a sleep state, and the integration of Windows Connect Now capabilities into Vista. Since WCN is marketed towards easier deployment of wireless routers and networks, the delivery of this latter feature should have zero impact on enterprise WLANs.

However, administrators may find benefits from SP2’s update to Vista’s built-in desktop search capabilities. While previous iterations of Windows Vista came with Windows Search 3.0, SP2 automatically upgrades to Windows Search 4.0. Released as a standalone upgrade about a year ago, Windows Search 4.0 promises improved stability and speed of the indexer, as well as faster sorting and grouping in Windows Explorer.

Administrators should also find Windows Search 4.0 significantly enhances the ability to control search and indexing capabilities via Group Policy. Windows Search 4.0 delivers 30 group policy controls, up from the nine controls delivered with previous iterations. Among the new controls are the ability to throttle indexing of Exchange stores, prevent indexing of certain file extensions, or to point clients to intranet search services.

Administrators should also find Service Pack 2 delivers more group policy controls over power management functions.

Microsoft has yet to announce a specific time frame for release of the gold code of the service pack.

Many of you have probably encountered the problem where a workflow triggers itself several times bec

Many of you have probably encountered the problem where a workflow triggers itself several times because the code carries out one or more Item.Update() commands. This can be extremely annoying because running extra workflows can be taxing on the server – even if you make sure that the extra workflows don’t make any changes to the element.

Then, you may have discovered Item.SystemUpdate() which in theory should rid the list of the all the extra instances of workflows because it doesn’t trigger an update event and thus flies under the radar of the workflow engine.

This seemed to work just fine for a while. Lately, however, it seems that SystemUpdate() has startet triggering events just like a normal Update().

Post Service Pack 1?

I found that many of my workflows now started behaving differently, i.e. they began triggering multiple instances of workflows.

It took me a while to realise that it probably was a “bug fix” in SharePoint SP1 that was causing the problem.

A glance at the documentation for SystemUpdate() reveals that events are indeed triggered:

There is no mention of SP1 but I assume that this was when the changes were made.

Solution

This is bad news for many developers but obviously a design decision at Microsoft so things probably won’t be changed back to the way they were.

From now on you have to make sure that your workflows only make changes to elements when needed. I.e. you need to only use Update() and SystemUpdate() when they are really needed and thereby minimise the number of redundant workflow cycles.

Alternatively, you could look into programming your own event handlers to obtain more granular control of when events are triggered. I may explore this subject in a future post.
