Saturday we were supposed to have beautiful weather…yeah right!  It turned out to be foggy, dreary and it rained all day.  This made it impossible to keep some scheduled outdoor sessions, but the Seibels had to get their pictures taken because Kristin’s brother was visiting and his family was heading back to Arkansas the next day.  So we used their front living room for the session and the pictures turned out great!  Sometimes challenges and overcoming them produces the best results.

The time has come again to celebrate the season.  As I smell my pumpkin pie cheesecake baking in the oven, it is time to post some holiday pics from the enchanting Christmas event I held on Sunday.  Can you feel the magic?

Big. Huge. Enorme. Maousse. Comment dire autrement ? Du bon gros swell rentre dans le PB avec à la clef des vagues de 4-5 mètres… Bien que gras, ça parait glassy et donnerait presque envie de tenter le coup. Mais non en fait, j’ai approché du Parlo à 3,5 mètre et je ne te cache pas cher lecteur que j’ai pas mal fouetté dans mon calbut (oui, c’était en été). Bref, moi tout ce que je demande pour le WE prochain dans le pays basque :

- un temps clément
- un swell honnête pour récupérer quelques miettes à la Bougie par exemple

Simple non ?

Wow. Great movie, just for the simple fact that someone was capable of making a film without stupid things jumping out at you like those youtube shockers and things of that nature (we’ve all encountered the maze or color test I’m sure)

This has by far been one of the best paranormal movies I think I have ever seen. It’s no wonder this $25,000.00 budget movie made uber millions! This movie takes you through a view of the other side, which if you’ve never experienced a paranormal event, it gives you a pretty good idea of what types of things you could expect. Footsteps, scratching, knocking,  inhuman breathing through EVP (electronic voice phenomenon). I have heard of people being disappointed in this movie and that is probably due to the fact that they’re so used to having something leap out at you with some wacky film effects and lots of LFE going on.

Paranormal Activity gets a 5/5 in my movie rating book for thrills and suspense. This movie exemplifies how a paranormal thriller should be! Honestly, I did not even want to look at my monitor in full screen because I was completely suspecting some wild looking demonic figure to just pop out in front of the camera to make me have to put on my Depends =P.

The boyfriend however was a serious douche who just made everything worse, to all you kids out there interested in playing with a Ouija board or spirit board, DON’T DO IT! Take it from someone who has had numerous paranormal events in his life and has certain abilities. Pissing off an inhuman is definitely something you do not want to do….The ending was a disappointment to a point, I wish they wouldn’t have shot Katie at the end, I know that’s kinda the point, but still, could have made it longer and shown the after effects and stuff, ah well, I just know what I would’ve liked to have seen ending-wise.

This location was brand new to me!  The sights were gorgeous and once we got the little man to loosen up we were smooth sailing for some fun and play.

This little man, Gunner, is my psuedo nephew.  Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Grandpa, and big pup ‘Oreo’ jumped in some pictures too!

Sunday’s LRNY Bronx session was more of a flash back then a normal meet up. Names like Brian Lewis, Hakeem Jimoh, Joe Dedentro and the usual Victor Callender and Jon Ortiz were all in attendance. It’s really good for any person to know their history but to be in the presence of people who pioneered your sport is something truly great. The session started slowly with people arriving with their sun glasses on, recuperating from the Saturday night hang over, and the Create Originals crew, Brian Lewis and Hakeem Jimoh, managed to be the early birds of the day coming all the way from Boston.


Brian and Hakeem had all of the CO products (frames, inserts, and shirts) for display and for sale during the session where they hooked up a few of the NYC locals with their products.

For the lucky few that bought/received the frames they also got a personally hand signed box from co-owner Billy O’Neil. Brian Lewis went on to say that Fish actually signed the first 600 boxes. The session started heating up as Dave Lang laced a royale to truspin topsoul revert 360 out on the Hunts Point Ave rail. Greg Sturino and Pat Bernet also laced a few rail to wall tap variations.

As more people arrived, Queens legend Joe Dedentro came out and joined in on the session and caught up with all the older bladers. Before the session though, I texted Victor Callender asking if he had any spare wheels and Vic ended up bringing a plastic bag filled with wheels that belong in a blading museum.

Names like Champion Baumstimler, Hyper, Medium, FR, and Kryptonics were all before me…in a plastic shopping bag. We then moved on to the second and third spot where the Create Originals best trick contest went down.

Edgar Rivera and Greg Sturino went head to head in the best trick battle with a few others attempting the Kink ledge. Edgar laced a few technical rail to ledge lines while Greg was focusing on clearing the entire ledge. Greg came out as the crowd’s favorite when he laced a switch 270 back royale winning him a brand new pair of Create Original Frames, an OG shirt, and Wheels In Motion bearings.

Speaking of Wheels In Motion, Victor Callender, also recieved a Create Originals package including the CO frames, decals, and shirts. The session continued on as late local arrivals came through but I started the almost 2 hour journey home back to Brooklyn.

While photographing LA Boxing in Brentwood for a 110 Magazine feature story one member of their staff really took to the camera.  In image after image it was apparent that Katrina was a natural.  When I asked her how long she has modeled, she laughed and said that though she was a NOS Girl she had no experience… but did like taking pictures.  Well I decided to change all that and schedule a photoshoot for Sunday.

Katrina arrived 30 minutes early (LOVED THAT) and waited for me inside the production theater we used as a meeting point.  When I reminded her that we were not shooting inside the theater but around downtown Antioch you could clearly see the disbelief in her eyes.  We tossed her stuff in the truck and headed to our first location, a bog of chest high reeds near a train track.  I asked her to change into her dress and heels while I set up the lighting and exposure.  Five minutes later she appeared and walked down the steep slope to the location.

As is my method, I assured her what we were about to do, which part of her would be in the shot and some small posing do’s and don’ts.  After a half dozen test shots, we took a few basic images to get warmed up.  I then walked over and showed her the first image.  “I like that ALOT”, great I thought… we now have buy in.  I could hear her thinking, “maybe this guy knows what he’s doing (lol).”  As you can see, Katrina looked amazing in her snake skin dress so a shot in the reeds was a no brainer.  While I laid on the dirt with mysterious critter-like noise coming from behind me, Katrina started to pose and the images came out beyond my expectations.

We then moved over to the pier for the next series of images.  When we go there the sky was pretty gray and unflattering.  I tried to boost contrast and warm it up a bit but nothing really worked.  I am a big fan of Joe McNally (though he uses the wrong camera) and the way in which he creates mood with gels and color temperature.  I decided to try to make day turn into night and dialed the temperature deep into the tungsten level, then use my 580ex reflected into a partially closed umbrella to cast a little neutral light only onto Katrina.  After a few minor adjustments it started to take shape.  I asked Katrina if she had red lipstick to create a little more of lady vampire vibe but she responded that red just doesn’t work on her.  When I brought the image into Photoshop I decided to see for myself.  She may have been wrong.

The shoot only got better from there and I think the following video really captures the day.  Thank you Katrina for being such a pleasure to work with.

As an avid music fan, I love anything to do with music. The other day, I was at a small “unplugged” session held at my school. On that particular day, I found myself more interested in the crowd than the music itself. You see, in a crowd, diversity is the key-different people, different faces!

What i found amusing that day was all the not known and misheard lyrics all around me. It’s fun to be a part of the crowd in a music session. It’s uplifting and highly amusing! Ever heard what the person next to you is singing? They start off humming, not quite sure of the words. Then, sings loudly just as they get the hang of it. Some hits a high note only to scream out the wrong word. While some shrug it off and keeps singing the wrong words others get back to their humming tone. It is funny, really, if you can catch what they are saying. I mean, who wouldn’t smirk if the person next to them is saying, “we don’t need no education, we don’t need no birth control!”

Of course, someone who sees me smiling like a goof during a Pink Floyd song will question my mental well being but if only they knew. So, the next time, if you ever find yourself at a music concert, do keep a look out for misheard lyrics. You might be standing next to the next Weird Al Yankovic!

I had a little fun trying to mimic a photograph of my daughter’s great-great-grandmother Edith. We estimate this photo was taken in the 1890s. They are both wearing the same dress.

How did I do?

I took my camera to Snow King today, but I didn’t get a single shot of the action. We built a little wind-lip style jump and met some new people while we were out there, but because Amy was taking photos, I just sessioned the jump with everyone else. It was a good time, and some of the pictures turned out (at least I thought they did).

Amy wasn’t exactly pleased with the results, though. Apparently she has a lot higher standards of excellence, and a total downpour isn’t the best condition for shooting. Also, I was too much of a wuss (and by that I mean I was, and am, seriously scared) to go really big — my ankle still hurts a lot, and the landing (well actually, the entire jump — run in, take off, and landing) is snow-gun product. Which, if you are familiar with snow-guns, means snow that looks like powder, with a heaping side of rock hard ice. And so it goes.

Still, a fun day.

What can I say?

Another annual Songcraft concert (our 3rd one so far), another highly-memorable event.

Now I am quite an easily-satisfied person, but in all honesty…I really felt that everything went PERFECT tonight.

From the moment I stepped into the Play Den at 4:55pm, and I saw all 3 mics set up nicely on 3 mic stands with 3 accompanying music stands, I knew it was going to be a good night.

(That was exactly what I had requested for from the Arts House folks.)

My biggest worry was the turnout, cos I was worried about both overcrowding and undercrowding. (You can never predict how many people will turn up for something like this, cos it is not a ticketed event.)

But it turned out beautifully…cos the Play Den was filled just nice for the entire night.

Amazing.

A lot has to be said about the beautiful venue, i.e. the Play Den.

I thought it was a pleasant upgrade from the Choral Studio at the YMS.

Not to say the Choral Studio was inferior…but it probably didn’t suit our needs as well as the Play Den did.

The atmosphere in the Play Den was remarkable.

The lighting was great, and ambience was cosy, and the acoustics were fantastic.

I really think a lot of the success of tonight’s concert could be attributed to the venue.

And of course, the stars of the show were the 20 songs by the various songwriters…and they certainly didn’t disappoint.

We were treated to songs of various genres and themes, but all beautiful nonetheless.

At the end of the day, we’ve not lost our focus – it’s always about the songs.

It is a showcase of original songs…songs written by your average joes living in Singapore, people like you and me.

Songs written by people who love music enough to pick up the guitar or go to the piano to create an original song of our own.

It is really an honour to know of so many wonderful, gifted and passionate songwriters in Singapore.

Future?

Songcraft has been around for almost 3 full years, and we’ve gone through 3 annual concerts.

We’ve certainly come quite a way.

It has been a most magical journey.

(When music is involved…it’s always going to be magical.)

What does the future hold? Will there be a 4th concert?

Nobody knows. It’s hard to look too far in the future sometimes.

I guess we will have to wait and see what the future holds.

We can’t be too sure of tomorrow.

But what we can be sure of is that the memories of yesterday were certainly great.

One big happy group of songwriters
