Just listened to goldfrapp’s latest album Seventh Tree – good stuff – by comparing it with her last album u realise shes really into the bigger picture, as in she picks up on a theme, a look, a feel and then builds an entire world around it – her last album was pretty much hardcore disco stuff, this time around its all acoustic hippy stuff – don’t know why im yet to come across any male musicians that dont give a toss about being classified and dumped in a genre – so yeah ive listened to imogen heap’s latest album, Ellipse, and instead of evolving an overall theme, each track is pretty much a completely different sound – not too sure i like that though – but anyway her drive to discover weird worldly instruments is an inspiration – its all good

Seventh Tree ialah studio album yang keempat dari British electronic duo Goldfrapp. Album ini telah dikeluarkan oleh Mute Records pada 25 February 2008 di United Kingdom dan sehari selanjutnya di United States. Goldfrapp menggambarkan album ini seperti “sensual counterpoint to the glitterball glamour of Supernature“, album terakhir mereka pada tahun 2005. Single pertama Seventh Tree A&E , dikeluarkan pada 11 February 2008 dan masuk top 10 pada UK charts.

Keseluruhan lagu di album ini sangat bagus, dibuat secari rapi oleh Goldfrapp. Mungkin tidak banyak yang up-beat seperti album-album sebelumnya, tetapi sound-sound yang mereka pilih sangat personal kalo saya katakan. Dimulai dengan lagu pertama Clowns, terdengar sangat lullaby seperti di alam mimpi yang indah. Memang meraka mengatakan terinspirasi oleh buku anak-anak dan ya, itu yang mereka lakukan dalam album ini.

Single mereka A&E, masih memiliki ciri khas yang sama dengan kebanyakan lagu lainya. Saya menyukai Cologne Cerrone Houdini, yang merupakan salah satu ciri khas music mereka. Caravan Girl terdengar sedikit up-beat, tetapi masih memiliki ciri khas music mereka.

Seperti yang saya katakan tadi, album ini a must hear for everyone. Great sound and great songs from great band.

I know it’s March already, but I couldn’t make myself finish writing this summary of 2008, even though my final list was ready in last days of December. On the other hand it’s never too late to catch up with good albums, so if you are not familiar with the ones I’m gonna present in this new ’series’ – give them a try!

There was plenty of good music in 2008. Lots of new fresh artists and thrilling discoveries. I would like to present you my ten favourite albums. Before I do that, let’s have a look at great albums that didn’t make it to my top ten:

Madonna - Hard Candy

There are some great songs, like ‘Candy Shop’, ‘Give It 2 Me’ or ‘Beat Goes On’.
There are some surprising tracks, like ‘She’s Not Me’ or ‘Incredible’.
All of them are produced by Pharrell.
And there are some – let’s face the fact – boring and predictable songs created by Timbaland and Justin.
But still, the album is good. The thing is I know it could have been so much better! More Pharrell, less Timbaland and Justin. NO Timbaland and Justin.

Grace Jones - Hurricane

The album is filled with Grace’s strength and self-confidence. That’s why the songs are so powerful. Maybe I haven’t become the biggest fan of Grace Jones, but I understood that she’s a strong artist who can inspire. Very good album, I can’t really say anything bad about it.

Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree

Dreamy, gentle songs with Alison’s airy vocals sound all very nice, but I prefer Goldfrapp in glam-electro. On their two previous albums they are hypnotizing; Seventh Tree lacks excitement… I mean, the album is great if you are in the very specific mood – if you’re not, it is nothing but boring.

Oszibarack - Plim Plum Plam

Less minimalist, yet just as raw as on a terrific debut album Moshi Moshi. Involving more live instruments in their music was a good step; I also adore all those cinematic sounds. Still, I think that it is the unique playful voice of Patrycja Hefczyńska that make them sound so distinctive. If you need a boost of pure energy – just listen to Plim Plum Plam!

Dido - Safe Trip Home

Dido is an established artist who hasn’t failed to provide beautiful, smart songs over the last ten years. Maybe it’s why this album wasn’t that thrilling as I knew what to expect. It doesn’t change the fact that I shed a few tears over moving lyrics sung in amazingly introvertive way… Flawless record.

Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles

Hate them or love them. Personally, I got stuck somewhere in between. I really enjoy all these cyber-sounds, they (or rather: he) can actually make melodic songs out of them and this is brilliant. But some of the tracks from their self-titled album is a crappy noise (‘XXZXCUZX Me’ – a title speaks for itself) and if this is called ‘music’… that’s a devaluation of this word. Another disadvantages of the album: Alice’s voice (hate it or love it – in this case I’m on a ‘hate’ side) and repetitiveness (there are only that many sounds you can get out of Atari 5200).

Inara George & Van Dyke Parks - An Invitation

It’s a really interesting and original album. Sometimes I can listen to it on repeat, sometimes I have enough after a couple of songs. On this record there is only Inara’s voice (you can know her from The Bird and The Bee) and Van Dyke Parks’ orchestra. It sounds like a psychedelic versions of very old Disney’s songs. There are moments when I feel uncomfortable listening to some songs – the vocals are arranged in a bizarre way. Hm. I still haven’t really got into the album yet, but I there’s something special about it that makes me want to listen more.
Top 3 songs from the album: Duet, Idaho, Dirty White

I know the idea is stolen – I first saw it on vh1 – but still, I sometimes find myself amazed by how much a band/singer changes in time.
The first example of what will probably become a series of posts is Goldfrapp.

I first listened to their music about 4 years ago when I fell in love with Black Cherry album. That’s what I had in mind when I heard Goldfrapp, and that was the main reason why, when I first listend to Seventh Tree I thought it was a fake.

Inspired by Kasia’s fine musical taste in yesterday’s post, today I want to share with you just a little bit of the sexy sounds and lusty beauty of one Alison Goldfrapp (and friend):

Miss Goldfrapp, who in conjunction with a man named Will Gregory, make up the ambient/electropop/folktronica (I swear I made that up in a bar conversation 10 years ago to impress a girl)/electroclash/synthpop/triphip (obviously you can blame Wikipedia for all of this) group that’s simply and brilliantly titled Goldfrapp. Nice, huh? This is the song playing at the very end of Kasia’s video:

“It’s called “Number 1,” and you’ve probably heard it before. Probably in a Gap, or in a Starbucks, who knows. You’ve probably heard of Goldfrapp before too, unless you’re against most forms of sexy music. I mean, you’ve definitely heard of them if you ever saw Hard Candy, in which they were an actual plot point of the movie.

True fans of the above genres will tell you that there’s much, much better artists than Goldfrapp in the business, and they’re right, but my God, isn’t a Goldfrapp a lovely package? Lush, beautiful songs with a dynamic, sexy voice and a singer that looks like a living incarnation of erotic 1970s dreams exploding out of your head. Or is that just my head? Or is that Goldfrapp’s “Lovely Head,” I wonder?

That’s “Ride A White Horse,” which you can take a metaphor for cocaine, certainly, or you can just take it as a funky, sexy song with an incredibly hot video. I choose to do both, thank you very much.

Regardless of the criticism of Goldfrapp, and there’s been a lot, say whatever you will about their music (and you’ll notice I’m less into justifying this group to you right now, or delving into their substance, when I can deliver unto you their very special spectacle), but they do what they do…

…quite nicely. Sin Titulo is a fan. Here’s the first song I ever heard by them a great many years ago, entitled “Pilots (On A Star),” a lovely candidate for a Bond song sound if I ever heard one, and here’s an incredibly beautiful song called “A&E.” And this…

…is “Strict Machine,” a song called “a future S&M club anthem if ever there was one,” according to PopMatters, and which to me, sounds like red hot sex filtered through a machine in a club to a brilliantly arousing array of lights with sultry synth just pulsating all over the place.

That’s “Ooh La La,” and as I watch these videos, I’m reminded of not only how sexy the music/general aesthetic of the group is, but how much fun too. This is how I wish my dreams were, just more drippingly hot. I think I’ll leave that as my final statement on Goldfrapp.

I might have been mean to Goldfrapp. I took them to be ersatz trip-hop (and there was plenty of that about), then ersatz electroclash (imagine – a sorry copy of Fischerspooner), and finally, ersatz glam. Maybe I should reassess their work, because Seventh Tree is a gorgeous album. Or perhaps they’ve just learned how to be gorgeous. ‘A&E’ is the mother of all comedowns – still, we’ve all woken up in a backless dress, right? – but somehow it’s warm, beautiful and shiny as a new pin.

Junior smiled as it faded in, then hummed along and told me, “We have this in the car.” She asked me the singer’s name. “Alison Goldfrapp.” “Oh, the one who emerged on ‘Pumpkin’, from Tricky’s peerless debut album, right, Dad?” She’s really coming on.

Blue, bright blue:

This is definitely one of the best songs this year has to offer. I still surprised by the album Goldfrapp released (Seventh Tree). It’s so different, so naive, sincere and beautiful. Favourite track, for sure, Eat Yourself

Well, today Danielle has learned how to widget some of her favourite music on to her blog. Sort of. She’s sure that she screwed something up. Ah, okay, anyways.

I love music, and I love to hear what people are coming up with. Whether new fresh tunes or old ones I have just discovered for myself, my tastes definitely run to the odd with artists like Man Man, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, and Tom Waits topping my list. I have a tonne of artists that I love, and every chance I get I try to find more. In honour of this (only slightly) momentous task of a music widget (points off for the eventual reformatting that’s going to take 3 hours), I’m going to discuss one of my favourite artists-Goldfrapp.

Goldfrapp is the duo of badass Britons Alison Goldfrapp and William Gregory (est. 1999). If you want a full biography go wiki them, dammit.

Alison Goldfrapp–The photogenic half of the musical genuises who comprise Goldfrapp.

Their second album Black Cherry (2003) was actually my very first listen of Goldfrapp. I had a shit load of time on my hands (thanks cancer!), and discovered a lot of music that year. I had read a small review about it in the local paper, and intrigued, I bought it as soon as it came out. I can’t recall exactly what sent me storming into the record store thinking I had to have Black Cherry. I had never actually heard Goldfrapp before, but apparently the written description was all I needed. I got home, put it into the CD player, and I knew the album was going to rock as the first electronic strains of “Crystalline Green” came on-I had never heard anything quite like them, and they were amazing (As an interesting fact, 2 songs off of Black Cherry were featured on the C.S.I. episode about furries. Bit squicky, what with the yiffing and the murdering). After listening to Black Cherry I automatically went out and bought Felt Mountain.

Felt Mountain came out in 2000, and although it didn’t initially fair well commercially, I, personally, think that it’s a masterpiece. It fuses cabaret with a dreamy airy quality. Alison Goldfrapp’s vocals range from seductive to ethereal, and William Gregory’s background in film scoring is audible in the arrangements. To me, it feels like a film soundtrack to an indie film noire version of Heidi on ‘shrooms (or heavy tranquilizers, depends how you look at it). While I love all the albums these two have produced, I would have to say this is still my absolute favourite. It’s almost timeless; its sound is odd enough that you just can’t place it.

After that, I didn’t get my next Goldfrapp fix until 2006, when Supernature was released in North America. This is one of Goldfrapp’s most successful albums, and it’s not hard to see why. There are catchy hooks in pretty much every song, sweet ballads, and stomping bar beats-this album is very polished, and is every ounce of what I have come to expect from this duo. It’s not just that they managed to corner the sleek, sexy, electronic Siren market; but that they actually make a statement about what we feel sleek, sexy Sirens ought to be. I challenge you to watch their videos for “Ride a White Horse” or “Number 1,” and not laugh. They have an amazing sense of humour, and the fact that they are willing to poke fun at themselves and just have a good time is more reason love Goldfrapp as people, not just their music. (While you’re on youtube, I recommend you check out their Christmas carol: “oh baby Jesus, he isn’t just another fetus…” how awesome are lyrics like that?)

Continuing on here, Goldfrapp have continued to brighten my life with their latest album Seventh Tree (2008). I know that a lot of people, mostly those who listened to Goldfrapp for their electronic dance tunes of the second and third albums, were disappointed with the return of a more ambient, folk centred album. I really enjoyed this though. Alison Goldfrapp’s voice is as amazing as ever (why she not been hit up to sing a James Bond theme is beyond me) and Will Gregory’s talent with a multitude of genres and instruments is brilliant. This album echoes the sort of psychedelic folk music of the 60’s/70’s and is a really solid outing. My favourite songs are “Eat Yourself” and “Little Bird,” although “Little Bird” sort of creeps me out when she says the crow “has two mouths for eyes” because I think of Neil Gaiman’s Corinthian…I don’t think that is quite what she had in mind.

In addition to all of their own albums, Goldfrapp also do remixes for other artists. I am obviously biased, but they do a great job with rearrangements and melting Alison’s vocals into the mix. Two of note are the Flaming Lips “The W.A.N.D. Supernaturalistic (Goldfrapp remix)”, and Depeche Mode’s “Halo (Goldfrapp remix).” If you like Marilyn Manson, Goldfrapp did a very cabaret mix of “This is the New Shit.” I’m a big fan of remixes (well, the good ones anyway), and Goldfrapp hasn’t let me down yet.

I know I am not a music critic, and that I could have given you more of a description of their sound, but I really feel that their music speaks for itself. So go have a listen, if you haven’t already. Goodness! There are no words that I can write that compare to the mastery of Goldfrapp’s unique sound and lush vocals.

i’m usually pretty up on the latest and greatest in the music world, but somehow, in the course that my life has taken in the last 8 years or so, goldfrapp has managed to sneak by me completely… until now.  exactly how this has happened is a mystery to me… what with all the trusted fellow music heads in my life as well as all the music that i myself consume with unhindered regularity.  but thanks to my friend and fellow lover of music, erik, goldfrapp has now entered my sphere of awareness, and i’m loving it!

after spending some time digging through their discography, i found that goldfrapp, spearheaded by leader alison goldfrapp, are quite the musical shape-shifters, coming from adventurous new angles with each record they release.  in other words, they are “artists”. imagine that.

goldfrapp’s latest album, seventh tree, is a lush and ambient soundscape much akin to something you might hear from frou frou or dido… in fact, it’s patty griffin meets imogen heap.  definitely check it out.

Y comentan que se han inspirado en libros para niños con historias surreales. Lo cual se nota en las letras y la música. Tambien podemos ver que el disco es muy diferente a lo que nos tenían acostumbrados, es algo más relax sin dejar por un lado el glam característico de ellos. Especial para oirlo por las mañanas.
