Sempre que passo em frente às livrarias e vejo nas vitrines livros como 1001 Filmes Para Ver Antes de Morrer ou 1001 Discos Para Ouvir Antes de Morrer, e até mesmo 1001 Livros Para Ler Antes de Morrer (ufa), eu fico bem… querendo morrer. Porque falando sério, é muito desesperador você amar música, literatura, cinema e saber que precisa conhecer 1001 coisas de cada antes de morrer. Sempre achei meio impossível.

Livrinho tentador

Bom, nem tão mais impossível assim. Pelo menos em relação à música. O Sétima Nota publicou em seu último post um link que disponibiliza a lista de álbuns do livro 1001 Discos Para Ouvir Antes de Morrer e seus respectivos downloads. Isso mesmo: agora eu (todos nós) posso baixar tudinho! E o mais legal disso é poder conhecer artistas e músicas “novas”. Que, mesmo antigas, eu não conhecia. E também curtir o que eu já gosto, como Metallica, Rolling Stones, Beatles, The Doors, Creedence, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Sex Pistols, Van Halen, Dire Straits, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Nirvana… isso porque só passei os olhos pela lista até o início dos anos 90. Legal também é ver a música brasileira marcando presença ali no meio, além de bandas de rock dos anos 60 que meus pais adoram!

O Metallica, inclusive, tem mais de um álbum na lista dos 1001. Para quem quer curtir o show que a banda vai fazer no Brasil em janeiro, é uma boa conferir parte da discografia. It came as a surprise to me when I realised, sifting through our reviews one fine day, we hadn’t done a single Punk band! I’ve only heard a little bit of it, and Baba T is a huge fan of the Punk aesthetic and ethic, so I set out to review the Pistols, and their only album ever.

The Pistols aren’t the first punk rock band, but they pulled massively in two different directions, compared to the Ramones. Firstly, they distilled all the lyrics down to the pure anarchist manifesto that is the sum of the lyrics of this album. Secondly, they added a bit more dynamics to the music and a little bit more technical proficiency in their instrumentalists. Only a bit. Except for Sid Vicious, of course, who couldn’t really play bass, yet is surely one of the greatest bassists of all time, if only for sheer attitude.

Doesn't get 'Punker' than this

No matter, Glen Matlock recorded these studio lines. They are just OK. As is the guitar playing(whoa, guitar solos!). As is the drumming. They are more proficient than the Ramones, but The Ramones really were about all four members there, whereas The Pistols reek of Johnny Rotten + 3 guys playing Punk Rock. Great as the Pistols are, I prefer The Ramones any day of the week.

The one thing that really strikes you about the Pistols though, is Johnny Rotten’s ’singing’. He sounds like he is barely tolerant of the establishment and is doing them a huge favour by pointing out that which is bleeding obvious to him. Brilliant.

I know the Sex Pistols were massively influential, but frankly I’m not sure how much their music had to do it. We all know about Malcolm Mclaren, who did a fantastic (if opportunistic) job of promoting the Sex Pistols as bonafide outlaws. And then there is Sid Vicious and that hooker chick he was dating whose name escapes me. See what I mean? Most of the stuff related to the Pistols that got a lot of attention is their behaviour than their music. I mean, the songs themselves aren’t too consistent. Of course, ‘God Save the Queen’ is an absolutely fantastic. ‘EMI’ is great too. But the real Anarchist manifesto here is ‘Anarchy in the UK’. Brilliant. But the other songs? I’m afraid they’re not too hot.

Punk Rock is music boiled down to its bare bones in all its glory. And this here is the only sort of a politics that bare-bones music could adjust itself to: anarchy. It’s fantastic as far as the big perspective is taken, looking at the Pistols as a response to stuffy middle class comfort. Despite the massive influence this album has had, I wish it had had a couple of other great songs. Four out of twelve isn’t enough. This doesn’t quite sound right.

Debating the quality of music must be one of the  favourite pastimes. Rarely, however, does conversation turn to influential music. This list is designed not to provide a definitive guide, but to give you food for thought and provide a catalyst for further debate. So here goes: the 9 most influential albums of all time.

01. The Sex Pistols – Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols

October 27th 1977. An unsuspecting British music scene is rudely awakened by Johnny Rotten screaming ‘I am an anarchist!’ If the previous 9 albums combined caused ripples in the music world, Never Mind the Bollocks was a 1000ft tidal wave of punk rock innovation that violently shook the very foundations of British music. Underestimate the influence of this album at your peril. It is unquestionably the most significant offering out of all the Manchester Brand artists of the era. When one considers that this list includes the likes of Joy Division, The Clash and The Jam, this statement mounts The Buzzcocks upon a solid gold plinth of musical infamy and superstardom. Without it, it’s unlikely you’d have heard of bands like Blink 182 and Greenday. It really was that important. Think I’m talking out of my hat? Listen to it and then listen to American Idiot. You’ll see what I mean…

02. The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Well, you knew it was coming didn’t you. Think this is a bit of a cliché? There’s a reason why things become clichés. It’s because they’re inescapably true. Every now and again something comes along that just changes everything, and in the world of music, this is one such thing. The Beatles’s eighth studio offering was received with both popular and critical acclaim, achieving incomprehensible commercial success. This album virtually provided the soundtrack to the 1960’s. One critic even branded Sgt. Pepper: “A decisive moment in the history of Western civilization”. Make of that what you will. Maybe they were more popular than God…

03. Oasis – Definitely Maybe

In bronze medal position, we have one of the most successful British bands of all time. These pioneers of Britpop followed in the footsteps of their punk and post-punk rock predecessors and perhaps defined the 1990s. Locked in an intense charts battle with main rivals Blur in 1996, Oasis ultimately won the war and continued to make critically acclaimed music well into the noughties. Definitely Maybe is often hailed as the greatest album of all time by critics and the list of bands that claim to have been influenced by Oasis reads like a who’s who of modern music. The Killers, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian; I could continue… Oasis’s influence is simply staggering and this is the album that introduced them to the world.

04. The Beach Boys – Pet Sounds

This album is another example of a true change in direction. The experimental vocal harmonies, inventive instrumentals and sound effects make the cut of this album’s jib very interesting indeed, and nothing short of an absolute masterpiece. Cited by Paul McCartney and The Beatles as a major influence on their work, Pet Sounds largely dictated the direction in which pop music went for decades into the future.

05. Elvis Presley – Elvis Presley

One word springs to mind. Originality. There was absolutely nothing like this before Elvis released his debut album in 1956. One could argue that Bill Haley was the proverbial ‘Big Bang’ in the rock world, but The King was something different altogether. He was a trailblazer in every sense of the word. He dared to go where no artist had gone before. He pretty much invented, mastered and then set alight the world of Rock and Roll, becoming quite literally one of the most iconic and recognisable figures of the 20th Century. He transcended music, and occupies a mantle not all that dissimilar to that of God to this day. Enough said…

06. David Bowie – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars

Put simply, there hasn’t been anything like this before or since. Bowie’s originality is little short of staggering, with this album undoubtedly being his very finest work. Consistently credited as one of the most significant rock albums ever, Ziggy Stardust transcended its glam rock foundations to influence a number of other musical genres.

07. Michael Jackson – Thriller

The most commercially successful album of all time, Thriller is considered MJ’s greatest musical achievement. This was his sixth studio album, however, and for this reason, its actual influence in terms of a change in direction in music is debatable. Nevertheless, the influence Jackson had and continues to have on pop music is too significant to ignore.

08. The Clash – London Calling

It’s difficult to imagine a more fertile music environment than the North of England in the 1970’s and 80’s. One could be forgiven for thinking that you wouldn’t be able to walk down the street in Manchester in 1980 without bumping into Ian Cutis or Paul Weller. The Clash were by far the most notable exception to the rule; Southern lads at the very forefront of the Mod rock revolution. London Calling marked a change in direction for the band; their intriguing blend of rock, ska and pop really gave those Northerners a thing or two to think about.

09. The Who – My Generation

Initially dismissed as a rushed and unrepresentative piece of work by The Who themselves after its release in 1965, My Generation has since cemented itself as one of the best rock albums of all time. The Who lent a fresh sound to rock, incorporating synthesized sounds that had rarely been heard beforehand, and inspiring future artists of the heavier rock kind, most notably, Black Sabbath, AC/DC and Iron Maiden.

The English Punk style began to gain attention when the Sex Pistols wore clothes from Westwood and McLaren’s shop at their first gig. The “punk style” included BDSM fashion, bondage gear, safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or lavatory chains on clothing and spiked dog collars for jewelry, as well as outrageous make-up and hair. Essential design elements include the adoption of traditional elements of Scottish design such as tartan fabric.

Viviene, also named Granny of Punk, introduced the world to a new style.Her ideas were revolutionary and most of her clothes back then became labels and models followed by punks.
True punks make their outfits with their own hands using only imagination. Viviene managed to stir the young and rebellious’ s imagination.
Sex Pistols introduced Viviene’s crazy outfits by wearing them in their concerts.
Sid Vicious was a notorious figure, a true model of punk attitude, his clothes were reflecting his youth and rebellious side, showing that he was ready to punk the world!

Through the years Viviene changed her style, but in all her collections punk elements are founded. Seems like they remained because a bit of punk remained in her heart.

Paul McCartney‘nin ‘Tug of War’ albüm kapağı ile Sid Vicious yanyana; ne alakadır derseniz…

Arkadaşımın twitter’ında rastladığım bir site (tıklayın). Doğum tarihini girdiğinde sana o gün müzik listelerinde hangi albümün ve hangi single’ın bir numara olduğunu ve seninle aynı gün doğmuş olan müzisyenleri çıkarıyor.

Benim doğduğum gün Beşiktaş’ın şampiyon olduğunu biliyordum.. Milliyet Gazetesi’nin o günkü manşetinin Keban’ın işletme hakkıyla ilgili olduğunu da.. Ama o gün Paul McCartney ve Stevie Wonder - ”Ebony & Ivory” parçasının hit single, Paul McCartney - ”Tug Of War” albümünün ise hit albüm olduğunu bilmiyordum! Ayrıca Sex Pistols‘dan Sid Vicious (gençlik aşkım) ve U2‘dan Bono ile aynı tarihte doğduğumu da..

Emily Haines is the high energy lead singer of the band Metric. Before Metrics new album Fantasies was released (which in my opinion is one of the best new albums this year) the band took a little break. Emily Haines continued to do the music thing and released Knives Don’t Have Your Back.

This is a video of one of her solo performances it is kind of a cover of Anarchy In The Uk by The Sex Pistols -but not really, either way i love it.

Se você tiver a oportunidade de ver o show de comemoração dos 30 anos do Sex Pistols que a HBO está exibindo agora em novembro, entenderá porque eles não são convidados para encerrar esses megaeventinhos pops para aplacar a má consciência em relação à fome na África, as mudanças no clima, a doença do mês ou “causas” do tipo. Clique aí embaixo para ver e ouvir “God save the queen” e me diga se estou errado…

Nada contra Sting (pelo contrário…), mas ainda prefiro o jeitão desbocado da boa e velha classe operária britânica. Aliás, a propósito, se você ainda não viu, não perca o filme “A procura de Eric”, de Ken Loach – solidariedade de classe, nada politicamente correta, para lidar com o crime organizado, a brutalidade dos traficantes e a violência urbana.

Década de los 70 y los 80

Sin duda esta es la época dorada del rock. En estos años se concentran los mejores grupos, todos aquellos que pasarán a la historia. También se concentran todas las ramas y vertientes del rock que desembocan en tribus urbanas y movimientos, cosas que solo la música puede hacer nacer, identidades y formas de ver la vida. En los 70 surge el glam y el movimiento punk, dando paso este último a finales de la década al after punk, que mostrará una clara inclinación hacia el rock gótico de los 80.

1970- 18 de septiembre: Fallece Jimi Hendrix.

El guitarrista, cantante y compositor estadounidense muere al parecer a causa de una asfixia provocada por su propio vómito al mezclar pastillas para dormir con alcohol, aunque hoy en día existe la teoría de un posible asesinato. Jimi Hendrix fue en sus días y sigue siendo, uno de los más grandes guitarristas de la historia, siendo concedido el honor del mejor guitarrista del mundo por la revista Rolling stone en 2003.

1977- 16 de agosto. Fallece Elvis Presley.

Se le conoce como el rey del rock. Causó furor en vida y es toda una leyenda del rock and roll. Su forma de mover las caderas sobre el escenario enloqueció a más de una y su música es indudablemente única. El día que fue encontrado inconsciente en su baño fue trasladado al hospital sin suerte. Se cerraba así una época  única en la historia del rock.

1979- 2 de Febrero: Fallece Sid Vicious.

La muerte del bajista del famosísimo grupo de punk londinense Sex Pistols aún oculta misterios, como muchas otras en la historia del rock. Sid Vicious se convirtió en una trágica leyenda al morir de sobredósis junto a su novia Nancy, a quien no se sabe si asesinó el mismo antes de morir en un estado de confusión, tremendamente drogado. En vida fue siempre un rebelde incorrecto que provocó a los que sí eran correctos, escandalizándoles con su actitud. Vivió unido a la heroína, y de la misma manera murió.

1980- Lanzamiento de Back in Black.

Tras la muerte de Bon Scott, cantante de AC/DC, sale Back in Black, el segundo álbum más vendido de la historia, después del archiconocido Thriller de Michael Jackson. El álbum es un homenaje al fallecido Bon Scott, por la apariencia fúnebre de la portada: el logo en blanco sobre un fondo negro, y el título, cómo no. Es también el comienzo de Brian Johnson como cantante de la banda. El disco traerá consigo tres temas legendarios del grupo: Hells Bells, Back in Black y You Shook me all Night Long. La  revista Rolling Stone coloca al tema back in Black entre los 500 mejores de la historia del rock.

The above is not a setlist as much as this year’s most exciting megamix – and there’s a phrase I haven’t bandied around with complete abandon since 2004. Previously, I mentioned something of writing about my favourite remixes of the year and although perhaps this isn’t the ’something’ I was expecting to write, c’est la vie. This year has been fucking awful for good remixes. I could only find three that met my flaky standards. One was the Stuart Price remix of Paparazzi which I overplayed anyway and don’t really enjoy any more, and doesn’t exist much outside of the middle eight anyway. Another was the Does It Offend You, Yeah? remix of Uprising that sometimes is better than the album version – a claim which is completely reliant on my mood at any given moment in time. But I’m a complete whore for DIOY,Y remixes anyway, so it’s a completely predictable anticlimax. The third was the Filthy Dukes mix of To Lose My Life that I thought was fun for a few weeks but it dulled quickly. Thinking about it, I only really liked it because it sounded like Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, White Lies and Bimbo Jones in one big melting pot, then I realised that they all do their own thing independently and it sounds better than this track. And with that thought, this brief flirtation was o-v-a-h.

I was reminiscing about the Teignmouth weekend a couple of days ago and realised that Zane Lowe’s warm up set for the evening was, not only one of the best openers I’ve seen for a band, but it fit the bill for resuscitating this dismal commentary. I’ve seen Zane DJ in a couple of other venues before, but he didn’t leave any kind of impression on me. This clicked. He actually did two half hour sets sandwiched between some really happening local bands, and the second was superior to the first, which is above. Rather annoyingly, the audio of the second never surfaced, and I don’t remember much of it other than an amazing remix of Bonkers, so I can’t even describe it. It was amazing. But back to the first set – Zane made me dance. I never dance. Ever. I’ve never understood the appeal behind DJing, or how some people are into it in the same way that I’m into peanut butter M&Ms (you’re pressing play on a track someone else created? Inspirational.) but I have a new found appreciation for it all now. Kind of.

I loved the way it was put together – though I will say that the airhorns all the way through got me excited for a play of the Freemasons remix of Ring The Alarm, which Zane obviously did not play: it was so not the audience for the Freemasons (myself aside, and I would have danced for everyone else there if it had come on),  but I loved all of the thought which had gone into each track and how it would work best in the mix. It was a great blend of genres, alongside music from today and music from ye olden days as well that provided an education for some of the younger audience members there (“Isn’t this from that Fatman Scoop song?”). It created an air of context for the set Muse went on to play, both musically and emotionally, and that’s a beautiful thing.

I would have taken System of a Down out though. I hate that song. Flobots would have worked just as well there.

Nice work Zane Looooooooooooooooooowe. I’m on board.

Either I am getting premature cataracts, or I am getting blinded by the gleaming studded high-street every day when I walk to school.

Studs are symbols of rebellion, a harsh statement of non-conformity. Only punks in Camden could pull them off, loving the points and whispers from curious day-trippers. A spiked and studded girl would be given a space through a crowd – lest she stab you with her tongue piercing, or something equally terrifying.

Then once upon a time, a skinny self-appointed indie bought a studded jacket on Brick Lane. Much to the awe of the other aspiring alternatives, so they all followed suit. Being indie is being individual, no? But anyway, that is a different post.

A couple of years later, and no one gives a girl in a studded jacket a second glance. Thank you Topshop.

Do these girls even understand that by following a fashion of wearing studs, they are destroying their very appeal?

Being alternative has become a style in itself. That’s a contradiction in terms!

But stop.

Punks are all dressed the same, so… they conform too…

Our budding Lester Bangs in the backseat admits, “I liked David Bowie better.” And, well, that’s the sane response, isn’t it? She does clap along to the first few bars, but interest soon wanes as if we’re acting out Duran Duran’s career in microcosm. Five minutes later they’re releasing Public Enemy covers and Junior is into Suede.

This is where Duran Duran put their “We want to sound like Chic crossed with the Sex Pistols” money where their mouth was, and came out sounding like, erm, Hipsway. But credit where it’s due, it has some funk and a nicely rearranged ‘Union Of The Snake’ chorus, and full marks for actually trying. With Andy Taylor jettisoned, they no longer needed to pull shoddy rock shapes and could get on with working that groove.

It’s just a pity no one cared anymore.

Outro grupo que tem como referência o jeans skinny são os indies que preferem os jeans mais escuros, com lavanderia mais envelhecida, já que o estilo fica por conta dos acessórios, como os terninhos, que compõe seu look. Misturar esses terninhos e gravatas com jeans skinny e tênis all star – ou qualquer outro tênis colorida -  faz a cabeça dessa galera super estilosa.

Os emos que cultuam um visual bem andrógeno com muita maquiagem, tanto para meninas, quanto para meninos, também adoram as skinnies. Os jeans dessa tribo, ao contrário dos indies, são sempre de cores vibrantes. As apostas são em jeans verde, pink e vermelho. Apesar do super colorido, as calças dos emos normalmente são mais básicas, mais sequinhas. Eles se inspiram nos visuais de bandas de hardcore melódico.

Hoje, na moda vale quase tudo. O importante é sempre saber adequar o visual ao seu tipo de corpo e personalidade, ter bom senso, e um jeans skinny no armário.

Alice Cooper es el nombre artístico de este estadounidense nacido en Arizona en 1948. Fue un pionero en el género glam durante los años 70. Se caracteriza por llevar una boa enroscada al cuello en sus conciertos. Nos deja famosos temas como “School’s out”. Actualmente tiene 61 años.

Esta banda australiana formada en Sydney en 1973 es un icono importante del rock duro. Su líder y fundador es el carismático Angus Young, de origen escocés. la formación actual consta de Angus Young (guitarra principal), Brian Johnson (cantante), Malcom Young (guitarra rítmica), Cliff Williams (bajo) y Phil Rudd (batería). Uno de los muchos éxitos de este grupo es “Highway to hell”. Angus tiene actualmente 54 años. La característica básica del guitarrista es su uniforme de colegio. El primer cantante del grupo fue Bon Scott, que falleció tras una intoxicación etílica.

Esta banda de punk se formó en Londres en 1975. Causó estragos y furor debido a su carácter rebelde, polémico y provocador. Su formación constaba de los siguientes miembros: Johnny Rotten (cantante), Sid Vicious (bajo), Steve Jones (guitarra) y Paul Cook (batería). Sus temas más comentados y coreados fueron “God save the Queen” y “Anarchy in the UK”.  Sid Vicious se convirtió en leyenda al morir de una sobredósis de heroína junto a su novia Nancy.

Este grupo estadounidense se formó en 1972, y se ha convertido en todo un hito. Su estilo ha recorrido desde el metal hasta el glam, por lo que colocarles una etiqueta sería un grave error. El uso del maquillaje en los miembros del grupo se ha convertido en su firma, junto con la larguísima lengua de Gene Simmons y el carisma de Paul Stanley. Son muchos los temas que han hecho famosos, entre ellos “Rock and Roll all Nite”.

couldn’t sleep again last night.  woke up late again today.  scanned headlines reading through who was saying what.  mom came back from her school and packed meats with vegetables for camping.  my parents are having a dinner party tonight with my father’s coworkers’ families at our suburban house.  she handed me 30,000 krw just before leaving.  i helped mom loading the packages.  had breakfast at 4 pm.  currently waiting for Prof. G to reply to my mail regarding a recommendation letter thing.  several tasks are on the process at the same time.  every day is a due date for different matters.  it’s okay -  the night’s getting longer and i’ve got some rock bands who’ll never throw my life away.  reality sucks anyway.
