Model Cheryl Tiegs was another of the great Sex Symbols of the 1970’s and 80’s. The poster above was one of the popular posters of that era that was proudly displayed on my wall during my High School years. Cheryl was a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition cover-girl 3 times, in 1970, 1975, and 1983. She continued to model for years and has also done some acting in films and on Television.

Most recently, she was a Judge on the ABC series “True Beauty”. As part of my autograph collecting hobby, and my quest to get signatures from all the women who’s posters adorned my wall in High School, I wrote to Cheryl and she was kind enough to send me two signed photos including the one below. Bo Derek was one of the great Sex Symbols in Hollywood during the early 1980’s. Though she had done a few other acting roles previously, it was the 1979 Dudley Moore comedy “10” that really introduced moviegoers to this sexy newcomer.

Unfortunately, as far as her acting career was concerned, the role in “10” did not launch her into super-stardom as she released a string of critical and commercial flops such as “Tarzan the Ape Man”, “Bolero” and “Ghosts can’t do it”. Her next mainstream hit was the 1995 David Spade/Chris Farley comedy “Tommy Boy” in which she had a minor role. In the 1980’s she appeared in PLAYBOY magazine numerous times, often photographed by her filmmaker husband John Derek.

Now, at the age of 53, she still looks as great as ever and can still be seen in the occasional new movie or as a guest on various TV series. She also volunteers her time to various conservative political activist causes, animal rights causes, and various projects supporting wounded veterans.

Like many teenage guys of the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, I had a major crush on singer Stevie Nicks. My bedroom wall, covered in a dozen posters of bikini-clad starlets and models, also contained a huge poster of Stevie Nicks. I have always loved her music, whether it be her work with Fleetwood Mac or her great solo projects, she has always been one of my favorite female singers.

Earlier this year, Fleetwood Mac made a swing through Dallas on their latest tour and the local entertainment critic wrote a review in the paper that contained an observation that floored me. He was watching the band play and came to the realization that Fleetwood Mac has been successful for so long that out of all the members of the band, Stevie was the youngest onstage at age 61! Yes,…… beautiful and sultry voiced Stevie Nicks is now 61!

She still looks and sounds great but it sure is hard to believe she has been a fixture in the world of music for the last 35 years!

Along with the other members of Fleetwood Mac, Stevie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

The fashion industry has a lot to answer for. I may have posted on this before. In fact I did from the perspective of the fashion designer who used “plus-size” models for a show. Those supposed plus sizes were between size 8 and 12, hardly plus at all and normal for most women.

Well, I also came across the following article by a writer. who dressed in a fat suit to attend several fashion shows. The attitudes about skeletal models and towards overweight people that she experienced just highlights the unrealistic world of fashion. The writer, Kate Faithtfull, is normally a size 10-12 and that would be too fat for being a model. Yet, if you look at her picture, beside one of her in the fat suit, she looks perfectly healthy.

As a child with an eating disorder and therefore a pudgy exterior, I have well experienced the attitudes of people to those not of normal size. Interestingly, when I look back on those pictures of me as a teenager I was pretty near normal size. I have a European, peasant body and will never be stick thin without serious surgery to remove calf muscle from my large, overdeveloped calves (finding high boots is nearly impossible and women with smaller calves than me have problems too), as well as trimming the hips and thighs down to a size I’ve never seen on my body.  I’m sturdy, I have childbearing hips and I will always be curvy. I wear between a size 8 and a size 10, even with this shape.

Now Faithfull padded her body out to size 22 and found some clothes to wear, commenting that it was a good thing her breasts were foam because she’d have trouble finding a bra otherwise. Her male friends were more intrigued by the curves and yes, men often like more curvy women. Black men especially seem to like a woman with some “junk in her trunk.”

Now in recent years that crept up. I was no longer a small in my tops, going to a medium. My size 10 pants were too tight to do up. I should say here that there are a whole host of pants/jeans, which could be size 14 and I would still not be able to get them over my calves. Many jeans that I can get over my hips are then far too big in the waist, because, yes, I’m curvy. It’s not easy for many women whose proportions are not the 36-24-36 proportions to get clothes, though I would argue these days the measurements are more like 36-28-32. At my smallest I 34-22-38.

The fashion industry was never selling to me and I’m not sure who they sell to with their stick thin models in size 2, which a very small majority of any population can wear. Most women are between size 8-14. Many wear larger than that. Just by dint of being tall, can pop you up a size or too.

When I got into watching the Buffy the Vampire Slayer  TV show I was made even more uncomfortably aware of my size by all the teeny women. Willow and Buffy were diminutive, yet Tara was more of a normal size. I’m sure some people thought she was fat but she wasn’t and I bet she wore a size 8 or smaller. After all, she said she weighed around 118 lbs and is around 5.5″. That’s not much weight for that height. Between Hollywood and the fashion world, people are freaked out about being 120 or 150 lbs when those are more natural ranges for people from 5.4 to 5.8. I don’t have the national average in front of me but I know many women who weigh 140-150 who don’t look fat at all.

What hit me over the year or two was that my clothes weren’t fitting. With a great deal of effort (a natural, balanced diet and working out 3-4 times a week) I’ve lost around 20 lbs this year. I think I could lose another 20  though the doctor says 10 maybe 15. We’ll see but I can say now that even if I lose that weight I’ll still have hips and big calves. It’s the way I’m built and it would take a truly anorexic frame to eliminate this and I’d be getting rid of muscle mass.

It’s hard being in a culture that ridicules people for being fat yet seems to reward those who starve themselves. Marilyn Monroe would be fat by today’s standards and she’s still a sex symbol. Oddly the model Twiggy, presenting an anorexic shape in the 60s that took the fashion world by storm (why, I still don’t know) started a trend that doesn’t seem to have ended. I’ll work always at being healthy but give me the Selma Hayeks and Sophia Lorens over Callista Flockhart and Twiggy. Curvy is healthier.

“Alien“, which was released in 1979, just happened to the be the first Rated-R movie that I was taken to see in a Theater. I was 14yrs old and a freshman in High School at the time. Back in those days, no one really had HBO or SHOWTIME yet, as most people did not even have cable TV, so getting to see an actual Rated-R movie was pretty hard and was pretty much at the mercy of your parents. My Dad took me to see Alien and for months afterwards, I wished he hadn’t. Though I now credit this movie with first introducing us to the beautiful and great Sigourney Weaver, this movie scared the crap out of me even worse than Jaws did 4 years earlier. This movie continues to be one of the most tense and scary films ever made.

The film went on to spawn a bunch of sequels, and while “Aliens” was another great film, the original “Alien” is still the best of them all. Watching the film on DVD or TV takes away from much of the experience. You really had to be in a packed theater to truly appreciate how scary the movie is and was. A classic film!

British born actress Rachel Ward was a very successful and sought-after talent in the early and mid 1980’s. From her role in the 1983 mini-series “The Thorn Birds”, to roles in films such as “Against All Odds, Dead Men don’t wear Plaid”, and “Sharkey’s Machine”, it appeared the beautiful and talented woman was well on her way to a highly successful career in Hollywood. Then, in the mid 1980’s, she pretty much disappeared from sight to US Audiences.

She married Australian Actor Bryan Brown in 1983 and to date they have had 3 children. Rachel Ward resumed her acting career in Australia and has continued to enjoy a very successful career “down under”.

In addition to acting, she has also been successful as a Writer and Director in Australia and has won a number of awards.

Today, at age 52, she continues to enjoy her career, family, and life in Australia.

An All-Time Classic!

WKRP in Cincinnati is easily in my personal top-10 list for best sitcoms of all-time. The show ran on CBS for only 4 seasons from 1978-1982 which encompass most of my High School years. Being a male teenager of that era, the thing that kept me coming back to WKRP every week was Loni Anderson. Loni’s poster was a prominent fixture on my wall at home during my High School years. (Poster Below) During the 60’s, teenage boys asked “Ginger or Mary Anne?” In my High School horndog years it was “Jennifer or Bailey?” I, like most guys, answered “Jennifer” although now, as I watch the show, I really should have answered “Bailey”. The show was a true comedy classic with great characters that are still timeless today. Dr. Johnny Fever, Venus Flytrap, Andy Travis, Bailey Quarters, Jennifer Marlowe, Les Nessman, Arthur “Big Guy” Carlson, and my personal favorite, Herb Tarlek.

My personal favorite episode is one in which Mr. Carlson and Herb bomb a strip mall with live turkeys during a Thanksgiving episode as Les reports live from the mall with a hysterical play-by-play reminiscent of the Hindenburg disaster.

Best Quote: (Mr. Carlson) “As God as my witness….I thought Turkeys could fly!”

The show was not very successful during it’s original run on CBS but really exploded in popularity when it hit syndication. Season 1 has been released on DVD, minus much of the original music, and the show can be seen occasionally on local stations or channels such as WGN AMERICA. Still a great show!

While having sex, I tell Frank, “Amos Oz, he was one of the finalists for the bad sex [writing] award, can you believe he wrote that a guy reaching up a woman’s top thinks her breasts are like a 12-year-old’s?  Isn’t that pedophilic?  Not technically, but still it’s creepy.  You can say they’re fresh or perky, but comparing them to a 12-year-old’s is just wrong, not that people don’t think it, but . .  . eeks.”

Later on, I note, “I just can’t think of Tiger Woods as a sex symbol.  He is an athlete but golfers aren’t necessarily known to be fit, you know?  Think of Arnold Palmer.  Can you believe I remembered Arnold Palmer?  I haven’t thought of him in ages.  Okay, I’ll change the subject.  Anal?”

Just this past year, I was fortunate to get a signed photo from Farrah Fawcett before she passed away. (www.redriverautographs.wordpress.com) She was a great, classy lady who will be greatly missed. “The Poster” though will live on for ages!

I understand if you have the body then show it off  but damn. If you show it off at work do you have to show it off everywhere else too. Amber Rose does wear some cute things sometimes but she’s on my worst dresses list because she always has on the same thing: NOTHING! She’s either in leggings (my favorite clothing item), short-shorts, catsuits, or she wears in a super short Kelly Bundy dress. And she needs to leave that where Kelly did… in the 90’s. Like some others have said she’s a rose that wilts in fashion.

Washington, D.C., native Taraji P. Henson has had an amazing transformation. In my opinion she is one of the best dressed actresses of our time. Here are a few pictures of hers that I really like. Taraji’s pixie cut and flirty fuchsia dress gave her the sass she needed to work the carpet.

My last blog got me wondering, will I be a nude beach fan? Aaron told me that a nude beach is for people who enjoy nature to the fullest. Yes, you can admire great bodies but people who visit nude beaches are different. They see beauty from another perspective and they enjoy people in a total different way. Many of us might think of a nude beach as a sex symbol only, who wouldnt? but after visiting these type of beaches for a while you enjoy your holidays in a different way. European people have been educated in a total different level that is why they dont get embarassed when traveling to beaches of this kind. Aaron says that when people travel to this places only because they are curious after a while they dont go back. I was curious as to what my wife would think if I invited her to a nud beach, so I went ahead and asked her. She comes from a strong traditional background; that didnt really matter to me and I went ahead and popped the question. To my surprise, she had been wondering how would I react if she was to suggest the same, we ended up laughing. We are not really thinking about it but it didnt bother us. I will tell you that I am not the cutest guy on earth; I havent excercised my body for a while and my wife has only just started excrcising. We asked ourselves; would that matter? We dont think so but at least that would make us feel adequate in a place like that

I know what Megan Fox Haters usually do. Although most of them are so clever, they still keep searching about her on search engine, especially, “Google.com”. The result is they make her to be more famous. Anything that you blame her or rail her, all make her famous and interesting. My suggestion is, if you are Megan Fox haters, just stop searching about her, and stop posting per photos in any case. The times you just enter her name in search engine, that is how you tell the search engine that she is famous. You should search and give your click to all her rivals instead.

I love this song and this video. Chris Brown is an amazing dancer. I love the fact that Lil Wayne and Swizz Beats are in this video, i can never get enough of these 3 hot men. The moves that he does require lots of time and practice. I imagine that he rehearses his moves for hours, until they are prefect. Because when he actually gets out there and does it, he makes it look effortless. As if it just came to him and he didn’t have to practice at all.

But take it from me I work with a lot of dancers and I have a little dance in my past too. Not to mention that my mother used to be a dancer, she can still cut a rug when she wants to. I don’t know what it is about this song that I like so much. It might be everything, from the lyrics, the beat, and the milady.

The outfits on the ladies in this video were absolutely wonderful. They showed of their curves and unique styles but it was also sexy. Most were fully clothed it still brought that sexy appeal that every man artist video wants, without having the women out there with their boobs and their ass hanging out. Who ever styled this video I commend you, because you apparently know that sexy sells more than sex innuendoes.

Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks embodies the role of femme fatale, Joan Holloway a “bold” and “sassy” character, and a role model for all the female office workers. She’s a vixen! A sex symbol! A goddess in tailored office-wear! Joan is the office sex symbol, with the tight fitting clothes that emphasis her curves but still leaves thing to the imagination. Joan is the real life 1960s Jessica Rabbit.

She is beautiful with curves and she isn’t afraid to show the off.

While everyone else is trying to evoke the past in their fashions, Joan is in the past. When you get to wear dresses cinched at the waist in bold colors like bright red, cobalt blue and forest green from top to knee-length and rich fabrics, it pays to be stuck in the past. With her fair complexion and red hair, every brightly colored piece of clothing looks even more vibrant. Most stunning? A fire engine red, knee-length dresses with a peach lip on an actress who isn’t thin.

The character is “hot” because she’s got that fire to her. She snaps back. And men love her because she’s in touch with her sexuality and femininity. The men in the office can play with her a little bit. They can tease her, and she’s not going to be in the bathroom crying later.
