(Wir bezweifelten es augenblicklich und einigten uns, es hiesse heute: «Hey, nimmsch Coci?»). Bloss: <em>Wir waren</em> im falschen Film. Gleichsam eine filmische Zeitreise. Hauptdarsteller im schlechten Film war Beni Turnheer. Noch schlechter sind nur Benis Hintermänner, die davon keine Kenntnis nehmen wollen (wir vermuten, weil sie schlicht nichts bemerken</span><span style="color:#888888;">).</span></span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:medium;">Champions League. Camp Nou. Barcelona gegen Inter. Schon hundert Mal gesehen. Völlig ausgelutscht und entsprechend langweilig. Immer die gleichen Rituale. Auch in der Kommentatorenkabine. Weshalb entsendet man diesen Turnheer überhaupt noch nach Barçelona, wenn Dani Langwyler doch ein für allemal bewiesen hat, dass man auch aus dem Fernsehstudio Leutschenbach emotional (oder was man dafür hält) kommentieren kann (für einen Flug Zürich-Barcelona und wieder zurück (C-Class) muss man auch heute noch geschätze zwölfhundert hinblättern. Das entspricht rund zweihundert Tageskarten der VBZ (mit Halbtax, versteht sich). Was soll&#8217;s, Turnheer war dort. Und leider auch Massimo Stinkefinger, vormals Busacca. Doch es war nicht Busaccas schuld. Denn Beni T. leierte und leierte über Massimo, unseren Massimo, und er las und las und las aus der Statistik, bis keiner mehr hinhörte, und erklärte und zählte wie viele Mal er, Massimo, schon in der Champions League gepfiffen hatte, und nie, nie, nie habe er einen Fehler gemacht. Stop it, Beni!</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:medium;">Zu den Zeiten, als Henne Hermann noch für die Nati die Bälle verteilte, Erich Burgener den Kasten reinzuhalten versuchte und Claudio Sulser England im Alleingang abschoss, nahm die Schweiz, neutral und traditionell, nie an internationalen Anlässen wie einer WM teil. Wer aber immer teil nahm, waren Schweizer Schiedsrichter: Dubach, Daina, Galler, Röthlisberger (der mutmassliche Betrüger), Meier (Urshole) und jetzt Massimo. Was konnte da der Boulevard tanzen, wenn unsere Schweizer einen Viertelfinal pfeifen durfte (und wenn dann die rosa Gazzetta auch noch über die Leistung unseres Schiris sibyllinisch schwieg, konnte dies nur das allerbeste bedeuten). Und der Boulevard tanzte. Wir sind zwar nicht dabei, aber trotzdem mittendrin. Fast so, wie beim heurigen Wettskandal.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:medium;">Wie kann man ein Fussballspiel kommentieren und während der ersten zehn Minuten über den Schiri – und nur den Schiri – reden? Braucht es umso mehr Helden, je weiter man selber vom Auge des Taifuns entfernt ist? Wir dachten lange, diese Zeit sei nun auch in der Schweiz überwunden. Weit gefehlt.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:medium;">Am Montag, dem Tag nach dem Auffliegen des grossen Wettskandals, an dem man ohne Probleme Erich Vogel, Kurt Röthlisberger, Maurizio Gaudino und irgend einen Funktionärsfuzzi à la Sloczetcetera in die Sportlounge hätte bitten können (Profifussball: Grenzen der Verführung), feiert das SF mit der sehr schönen Steffi Buchli eine fröhliche Erinnerungsrunde: «Vancouver vor 21 Jahren: Calgary». Man müsste die gesamte Führung des Schweizer Fernsehens in die Weiterbildung nach Nordkorea entsenden.</span></span></span></p>
<p style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://sportaktuell.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/pirmin.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-996" title="Pirmin" src="http://sportaktuell.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/pirmin.jpg?w=300" alt="" width="300" height="202" /></a><span style="color:#888888;"><em>Auch wenn er es nicht gerne hört: Immer auf Teufel komm raus!</em></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;"><span style="font-family:Arial,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size:medium;">Hyppolit Kempf ist ein langweiliger Funktionär. Bei Ekkehard Fasser fragte die Alte Frau auf der Strasse (in der sogenannten Sportbox) zu Recht: «Isch da en Tütsche?». Vrene Schneider begeisterte uns zwar durch Ehrgeiz, Siegeswillen und Medaillen, ist aber insgesamt einfach nichts weiter als eine huere langweilige Babe. Aber da sass noch der König der Steilhänge in der Runde. Früher, als <em>Büeb isch dr Berge</em>, war er der Medienwelt noch nicht ganz gewachsen («Aids ist eine Strafe Gottes»). Aber als er so da sass und in seinem uralten Zermatter Dialekt nochmals den alten Siegeswillen, die Unbedingtheit und den Willen zum Triumph demonstrierte, lief es uns kalt den Rücken herunter. Fragt Steffi Buchli: «Was hätt Ihne de Schisport <em>braacht</em>?» Zurbriggen versteht die Frage nicht. Steffi wiederholt. Zurbriggen: «Ah, wos er ge<em>brunge</em> het!». True heroes never die! <p>Jag har egentligen ganska få konkreta barndomsminnen. När min syster läste pedagogik fick hon lära sig att när folk ska dra sig till minnes någon speciell situation ur sin barndom (här kan du testa själv genom att tänka på något tydligt barndomsminne) är det en förkrossande majoritet som beskriver något som skedde utomhus, eftersom det av någon anledning tycks vara lättare att minnas sådant. Alltså kanske mina få minnen beror på att jag ofta satt inne och nördade mig, medan mer sunda barn var ute och stångades? Det är nu inte så konstigt: På min tid var det standardpedagogik att säga &#8220;Ät upp din mat! Tänk på barnen i Afrika, de skulle minsann inte säga nej till lasagne som består till 90% av bränd ost!&#8221; till födotrilskande ungar. Då är det förstås naturligt för ett intelligent (nåja) barn att utvidga detta solidaritetstänkande till andra utsatta grupper. Och att befinna sig utomhus frivilligt är ju ett rent hån mot alla hemlösa människor.</p>
<p>Istället för konkreta minnen  har jag en del allmänna minnen, en sorts hopkok av flera situationer som sammanfattar en viss stämning som rådde under min uppväxt (och som jag möjligen inbillar mig). Ett sådant generellt minne är av kompisar som var extremt otåliga när vi tittade på film och ville att vi skulle snabbspola till de ställen där det &#8220;händer något&#8221;. Om dessa människor läser böcker idag tror jag att de skulle gilla <em>Takvärlden</em>.  Här känns det verkligen som om de flesta scener som inte innehåller våld, jakter eller liknande skurits bort av en pundteckenögonförsedd redaktör! Det är synd, för i grunden finns den mycket intressanta idén att en liten grupp av människor har bosatt sig på Londons tak och där byggt upp sitt eget lilla samhälle (alla som läst <a href="http://drommarnasberg.wordpress.com/2009/02/10/un-lun-dun-av-china-mieville/" target="_blank">Un Lun Dun</a> minns väl hur detta parodierades av China Miéville) med  hjälp av listigt applicerade klätterverktyg. När boken börjar är detta samhälle hotat av en mystisk och mordisk sekt och vi får följa två insekter (som takvärldsmänniskorna kallar oss markbundna typer) som av en slump dras in i slutstriden mellan de två grupperna. Japp, slutstriden. Trots att det &#8220;händer något&#8221; nästan hela tiden känns det som om det mesta av intresse redan hänt. Som fantasyfan skulle jag förstås ha velat följa takvärldens tillkomst från början, med tidiga etableringsförsök, splittringar i politiska fraktioner, tillkomsten av ritualer, etc, och jag skulle gärna ha sett att den färdiga romanen innehöll kartor, flaggor och gängsymboler. Men boken är skriven för thriller- och deckarfantaster (vi får även följa polisens utredning av taksektens olika rituella mord och den biten känns rätt klyschig).</p>
<p>Slutintrycket är alltså det av en briljant idé som inte förvaltats särskilt väl. Dock finns det en hel del som talar för <em>Takvärlden </em>som roman. Tempot gör den extremt snabb- och lättläst, så den funkar utmärkt som läsning på bussar och under kaffepauser på jobbet. Huvudpersonerna är sympatiska om än inte så levande beskrivna och några av kvinnorna är befriande kaxiga och starka. Sedan ges man <em>en del</em> bakgrundshistoria också, så fantasytarmen blir inte helt utan. Dessutom är Londons tak engagerat och noggrannt beskrivna och jag får intrycket att det skulle gå att sitta med en karta över staden och följa med i handlingen på den. Jag har inte testat, men det viktiga är ju att det känns som om det skulle gå. Sedan finns det en del övernaturliga inslag också, eftersom berättelsen är en sådan där som går att tolka som helt realistisk, även om en del saker då blir svåra att förklara, men även som innehållande övernaturliga inslag, vilket å andra sidan gör den lite långsökt.</p>
<p>Den som gillar thrillers (och snabbspolning) skulle jag helt klart rekommendera att läsa <em>Takvärlden</em>. Likaså den som tycker att själva idén låter fascinerande. Något direkt mästerverk är den dock inte.</p>
<p>Betyg: 3/5 &#8211; helt okej</p>

<p>Redan nu står en hel del att läsa på <a title="Öppna länk i nytt fönster" href="http://eurocon2011.se/sv" target="_blank">Eurocons hemsida</a> angående det planerade science fiction conventet i Stockholm, 17-19 juni 2011. Enligt hemsidan låter det väldigt trevligt:</p>

<p>Elisabeth Bear har presenterats som hedersgäst och har vunnit bland annat två stycken Hugo Awards (största utmärkelsen inom SF-världen en kan få?) och hennes senaste verk är den steampunkiga bokserien <a title="Öppna länk i nytt fönster" href="http://www.sfbok.se/asp/artikel.asp?VolumeID=67131" target="_blank">New Amsterdam</a>. Verkar helt klart värt att kolla upp!</p>

<title><![CDATA[Destination Moon: It's Rocket Science. ]]></title>

<p style="text-align:justify;">[<em>This is a revised extract from my book, <a href="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/2009/03/20/performing-illusions-cinema-special-effects-and-the-virtual-actor/">Performing Illusions</a>, mixed with fragments and notes not included in the book</em>. <em>The broader context of this section, which looks at </em>Destination Moon<em>, is a discussion of science fiction cinema in the 1950s, drawing a distinction between the subversive excesses of low-budget exploitation, which treated the military-industrial agenda of "big science" with some disdain, and the big budget tales of space exploration that aligned science with spectacular imagery and limitless potential for human gain in the form of national pride and military advantage.</em>]</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">While tales of alien invasion were finding their place as a staple of the science fiction B-movie circuit, a few <del datetime="2007-11-16T10:48"></del><ins datetime="2007-11-16T10:48" cite="mailto:Dan%20North"></ins>major productions were entertaining the possibility of a future lunar mission, and in the process espousing the value of the technologies denigrated by their low-budget imitators. In the 1950s, inspired by <a href="http://www.solarviews.com/eng/rocket.htm">genuine rocket research</a> and concerted efforts to reach and explore outer space, a few films offered predictions of what the space race might achieve, sometimes smuggling in militaristic propaganda. This visualisation of capital-intensive science stands in sharp contrast to the half-hearted attempts a<span style="color:#000000;">t astronautical engineering <ins datetime="2007-11-16T10:49" cite="mailto:Dan%20North"></ins>s</span>hown in the B-movies of the time, and show up even more starkly the divisions between the high and low budget cinema of the time, the one aggrandising the military and scientific establishment with meticulously constructed effects held up for spectatorial contemplation, and the other besmirching the worth of multi-billion dollar space program with depictions of the cosmos as a site of plastic toys wobbling through a worthless void.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Underpinning both discussions of the future of space exploration was the knowledge that, as rocket science progressed, one consequence would be the parallel development of missile systems, so that space exploration was tied technologically and iconographically to military power. Crucial to creditable renderings of spacecraft are the miniature models used to represent them, and the compositing techniques used to create the impression of flight. The skills required for such effects would have been honed at studio facilities with particular interest in war films during the 1940s, such as <em>Ships with Wings </em>(Sergei Nolbandov, 1941), <em>Mrs. Miniver</em> (William Wyler, 1942), <em>Air Force</em> (Howard Hawks, 1943)<em> </em>and <em>Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo</em> (Mervyn LeRoy, 1944), all of which rely on miniature models to represent ships and aircraft. In this way, depictions of spacecraft can be seen as connotatively linked to depictions of military machines, and the appropriate attention to detail in respecting the integrity of such vehicles can be read as either subversion or sustenance of their iconic power as a physical threat and a patriotic symbol.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>Destination Moon</em> (Irving Pichel, 1950) was based loosely on Robert A. Heinlein’s novel <em>Rocketship Galileo</em> (1947), and Heinlein, along with Transylvanian rocket expert Hermann Oberth, acted as technical adviser on the film. Oberth (1894-1989) had, along with Willy Ley (1906-1969), acted in a similar capacity on Fritz Lang’s <em>Die Frau im Mond/The Woman in the Moon</em> (1929, released in the U.S. in 1931 as <em>By Rocket to the Moon</em>). Lang wanted the film to have a kind of documentary realism to support the story of an industrially-sponsored lunar mission. The film was famously withdrawn from distribution by the Nazis, who feared that it might reveal secrets about the ongoing development of the V1 and V2 rockets. The spaceship model used in the film was also destroyed by the Gestapo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/vlcsnap-45993.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3085" title="Die Frau im Mond" src="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/vlcsnap-45993.png" alt="" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Willy Ley had been a friend of Lang and his wife, Thea von Harbou, and was the respected author of <em>Möglichkeit der Weltraumfahrt/The Possibility of Space Travel</em> (1928) and founding member of the Society for Space Travel in Germany. Ley introduced Lang to Oberth, who had been a designer of rocket artillery for the Austrian army in WWI and was author of the highly influential <em>Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen/By Rocket to Interplanetary Space</em> (1923).  He would later perform scientific research for the Nazis, while Willy Ley fled to the U.S.A. One of the film’s many accurate predictions was the countdown as part of launch protocol, something which is communicated by title cards (the film was silent), and which Lang invented for dramatic effect in the film. Mechanical effects were provided by <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0953807/">Lee Zavitz</a> (who won an Academy Award for his contribution) with background scenery and sets created by Chesley Bonestell (credited as ‘technical adviser of astronomical art’: see some of his work <a href="http://www.bonestell.org/">here</a>, and a superb picture series from <a href="http://www.cthreepo.com/bonestell/">Coronet magazine in 1950 here</a>) and Ernst Fegté. Another film, <a href="http://www.dvdsavant.com/s123XM.html"><em>Rocketship X<ins datetime="2007-10-30T12:42" cite="mailto:Dan%20North">-</ins>M</em></a> (Kurt Neumann, 1950) was actually the first Hollywood movie centred on a lunar expedition to be released theatrically, rushed into production to capitalise on the pre-publicity for <em>Destination Moon</em>. While <em>Destination Moon </em>cost $586,000, <a href="http://www.1000misspenthours.com/reviews/reviewsn-z/rocketshipx-m.htm"><em>Rocketship X<ins datetime="2007-10-30T12:42" cite="mailto:Dan%20North">-</ins>M</em></a> was budgeted at just $94,000.  As such, it lacks the benefit of extended scientific research, and is more closely associated with space opera stories such as <em>Flash Gordon</em>. In Neumann’s film, the moon rocket is diverted from its course and eventually lands on Mars (the change in atmosphere signalled by Neumann’s decision to tint the film red for all sequences set on the surface of Mars, which were actually shot in <a href="http://www.redrockcanyonlv.org/">Red Rock Canyon, Nevada</a>), where the crew discover a race of beings who have survived an atomic holocaust which once decimated the planet&#8217;s <ins datetime="2007-11-16T10:50" cite="mailto:Dan%20North"></ins>super-intelligent inhabitants<del datetime="2007-11-16T10:50"></del>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/vlcsnap-2009-11-16-22h46m44s62.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3086" title="Destination Moon" src="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/vlcsnap-2009-11-16-22h46m44s62.png" alt="" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>Destination Moon</em> is intended as an educational rallying cry for the importance of lunar missions, at a time when they might have seemed a distant fantasy, and barely a constructive geo-political strategy in the aftermath of WWII. In seeking to assert the plausibility, as well as the military advantage, of space travel, the film aims at a realistic approach. It does this via appeals to scientific realism which are encoded in its diligent approach to design and special effects; the esteemed scientists named in the credits offer validation of its accuracy. Aside from a few inserts visible on a monitor inside the rocket, we never see the ship launched from Earth in <em>Destination Moon</em> – instead the camera focuses on the contorted faces of the astronauts, who become nauseous and disorientated by the first sensations of weightlessness. An attempt is being made at heightened realism by showing the unpleasant realities to be expected in the future of space flight – I don’t recall Flash Gordon ever suffering the after-effects of G-force or motion sickness. The illusion of weightlessness is created by suspending the actors from wires or positioning them on moving platforms with their feet out of shot. The design of the control room of the rocketship ‘Luna’ is a compromise between the requirements of authenticity and the necessity of photographic and aesthetic conditions; the panels in the consoles could be removed to allow the insertion of a camera or lighting rig (Heinlein quoted in Johnson 1972: 52-65).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/vlcsnap-2009-11-16-22h47m03s250.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-3070" title="vlcsnap-2009-11-16-22h47m03s250" src="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/vlcsnap-2009-11-16-22h47m03s250.png" alt="" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">When a <a href="http://www.toontracker.com/woody/woody.htm">Woody Woodpecker</a> cartoon is shown to potential investors to persuade them of the viability of space travel, it fills the screen, addressing you, the viewer, as well as the bankers, thus nearly drawing a comparison between the two audiences who need to be educated and primed for a future space mission. It also handily explains how a rocket mission works so that the film&#8217;s later spectacular sequences can be measured against the scientific facts. It&#8217;s not all that rare to have these didactic set-ups in a spectacular cinema: see for example the explanatory film that plays early in a <em>Jurassic Park</em>, with <a href="http://jurassicpark.wikia.com/wiki/Mr._DNA">some cartoon DNA</a> telling you how it all works, or the rudimentary CG simulation that pre-visualises the ship sinking near the start of <em>Titanic </em>(1997). <em><a href="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/2009/02/12/a-trip-to-the-moon-le-voyage-dans-la-lune/">Le Voyage dans la Lune</a> </em>(I was trying to get through a whole blog post without mentioning it) begins with a scene of the planning of a moon mission, sketching a diagram on a blackboard &#8211; come to think of it, <em>Destination Moon </em>follows Georges Melies&#8217; film quite closely, going through the same stages of planning, building, launching, exploration, danger, escape and return to Earth. Science fiction films are not averse to having a boffin step in and give a quick presentation to point how the physics works, and thus manage expectations and build anticipation. I like to call it the &#8220;flowchart&#8221; scene. Maybe you, dear reader, can think of some other examples. (<em>Rocketship X<ins datetime="2007-10-30T12:43" cite="mailto:Dan%20North">-</ins>M’s </em>equivalent expository scene can only muster some chalkboard sketches) The Woody Woodpecker scene doubles as a promotional short for one of the studio’s other entertainment franchises while making a sharp comment on the need to popularise scientific innovation to maintain uncritical public support and comprehension. When one private investor questions why the mission is necessary, General Feyer delivers the following speech:</p>
<blockquote>
<p style="text-align:justify;">We are not the only ones who know the moon can be reached. We are not the only ones who are planning to go there. The race is on, and we’d better win it, because there is absolutely no way to stop an attack from outer space. The first country that can use the moon for the launching of missiles will control the Earth.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Thus is forged a bond between big business and big (military) science, resulting in the reactionary, paranoid representation of technology that has traditionally been attributed to the alien invasion film, and all of it mediated by a chuckling <del datetime="2007-11-16T10:50"></del><ins datetime="2007-11-16T10:50" cite="mailto:Dan%20North"></ins>cartoon bird. There&#8217;s another point of access for spectators who might be baffled by the science, in the form of Joe Sweeney, a blue-collar techie played by mini-Bogart Dick Wesson. Ignorant of how stuff works, and disbelieving of the possibilities, he provides an excuse for the scientists to explain what&#8217;s happening as they go along.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><a href="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/bride-of-the-monster.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-3082 alignleft" title="Bride of the Monster/Atom" src="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/bride-of-the-monster.jpg" alt="" width="216" height="166" /></a>The space exploration film<em> </em>shows technology as a way of claiming territories outside the Earth in order to present a display of might to other nations, and by inviting the contemplation of expertly rendered sequences of space travel, it tacitly accepts the value of militarily-enforced scientific research. While planning to test a nuclear engine for the rocket, the mission team receive a letter from their governing body, declining the proposal to test on American soil, since: ‘While it is admitted that no real danger of atomic explosion exists, belief in such danger does exist in the public mind.’ This is probably the film’s most insidious act – to blame public scepticism about the value and safety of rocket research for hindering its unchecked development. Such stubborn faith in the nuclear project stands in stark contradistinction to the torrent of irradiated mutant mayhem that was to be unleashed in low-budget exploitation films such as<em> Bride of the Atom </em>(Ed Wood, 1955), <ins datetime="2007-11-16T11:02" cite="mailto:Dan%20North"></ins><ins datetime="2007-11-16T11:02" cite="mailto:Dan%20North"></ins><em><del datetime="2007-11-16T10:51"></del></em><del datetime="2007-11-16T10:51"></del><em>The Amazing Colossal Man </em>(Burt I. Gordon, 1957), <em>Attack of the Crab Monsters </em>(Roger Corman, 1957), <em>The Creature With the Atom Brain </em>(Edward L. Cahn, 1955), and <em>The Cyclops </em>(Burt I. Gordon, 1957).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em><a href="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/conquest-of-space.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-3080 alignright" title="Conquest of Space" src="http://drnorth.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/conquest-of-space.jpg" alt="" width="216" height="327" /></a><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conquest_of_Space">Conquest of Space</a></em> (Byron Haskin, 1954), inspired by the speculatively scientific 1949 book of the same name written by German émigré rocket scientist <a href="http://www.nasm.si.edu/research/arch/findaids/ley/ley_sec_1.html">Willy Ley</a> and illustrated by <a href="http://www.novaspace.com/ARTIST/ChesleyBonestell.html">Chesley Bonestell</a>, is a self-professed ‘story of tomorrow’, and a pseudo<del datetime="2007-11-16T11:05"></del><ins datetime="2007-11-16T11:05" cite="mailto:Dan%20North"></ins>-sequel to <em>Destination Moon</em>, set in a future where space travel is more commonplace and straightforward. Rather than being a story of heroic pioneers, more drama is gleaned from details of the emotional effects of such excursions on the temperaments of the men who do so (there are still no women in space at this point). A planned Moon mission is revealed to be an expedition to Mars in search of natural resources to solve Earth’s energy needs. An attempt to sabotage the mission is made by its leader, General Merritt (Walter Brooke, an amazingly hard-working film and TV actor, perhaps best remembered as the family friend who only has one word, &#8220;Plastics&#8221; for Dustin Hoffman in <em>The Graduate</em>), ranting that exploring worlds beyond those provided by God must be a blasphemous transgression of some Edenic pact. In other words, the film’s only stated objections to the destructive, colonialist thrust of the military industrial complex are put into the mouth of an unhinged fanatic, safeguarding the patriotic ideals of the expedition as admirable goals.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">More than any other film of the period about space exploration, <em>Destination Moon</em> is encoded with a sub-narrative about the connections between a lunar mission, national pride, commerce and the military-industrial complex. Less interested in the romance of space and more busily focused on its pragmatics, it even plays down human heroics in order to emphasise the spectacle of engineering. It&#8217;s too earnest in its intention to incorporate proper rocket science to be real thrill ride, but it&#8217;s a real timepiece, and some beautiful moments where the diligent design and adventurous spirit come together to produce a beautiful shot. It may just be me, but I love the bits where actors are substituted with little stop-motion puppets by George Pal. Nothing emphasises the vulnerability of the astronauts like their reduction to miniature models, a visual index of their subordination to the adventures of engineering and the loitering interest of military giants.</p>

<h2 style="text-align:justify;">În România multe femei sunt bătute, violate sau abuzate psihic, dar numai 16% dintre ele au curaj să reclame la poliţie.</h2>

Până când, Doamne&#8230; ?</h2>
<h2 style="text-align:justify;">Şi cum am putea noi, victimele nemernicului să spunem * iartă-i, Doamne că nu ştiu ce fac *&#8230; când ei, toată armata de şobolani au ştiut tot timpul exact ce fac&#8230;  De asta muşamalizarea şi pitirea mizeriilor sub preş, legea tăcerii a acelui * nimic nu răsuflă-n afara sistemului * reprezintă punctul pe i şi degetul pe rană, pentru că,  fenomenul NU e stopat şi există mereu riscul de-a se mai întâmpla! În Twin Peakse-ul  cărăşean, victimele sunt etichetate * nebune *, agresorii sunt ţinuţi în braţe, cui pasă&#8230; Hărţuirea morală la locul de muncă, ameninţările, împroşcatul cu invective şi folosirea limbajului obscen, vulgarităţie apostrofărilor la adresa femeilor, fetelor, abuzurile de influenţă, funcţie, putere, hărţuirea psihică, bătăile, etc. sunt ridicate la rang de * merite deosebite * şi-au binecuvântarea cui ar fi putut să reaşeze lucrurile pe făgaşul normalităţii, dar&#8230; n-a fost prost cine-a spus că * peştele de la cap se împute *, d-aia duhoarea persistentă de sub nădragii muherilor în izmene, * moralii *, * modelele *, însemnaţii&#8230;</h2>
<h2 style="text-align:justify;">Politica socială de*  succesuri *: NU protecţia copilului, ci protejarea imaginii instituţiilor, NU interes superior al copilului, ci interesele personale ale * divelor * şi * prinţişorilor * din dotarea * Împărăţiei *, NU prevenire, măsuri, soluţii, NU stoparea comportamentelor indecente, deviante şi-ndepărtarea cauzelor/agresorilor, ci pitirea mizeriilor sub preş, NU acceptarea tristei realităţi şi conduită ca atare, NU înfruntarea realităţii-adevărului dovezilor, ci, prigonirea şi hărţuirea victimelor, pentru că au avut şi au curajul de-aşi purta cu DEMNITATE durerile. Our nameless narrator goes into the woods with a sterotypical hunter called Jimmy Ray. Their prey? Bioengineered teddy bears, bought as pets and now living wild as pests. The story is about four pages long and by the second page it is obvious where it is going. A deeply inauspicious start to the anthology.</p>

<p>Toute l&#8217;industrie est boostée par l&#8217;utilisation de l&#8217;ether, force dangereuse mais aussi prodigieuse qui permet toutes les folies steampunk de ce livre. On utilise machines volantes à tout va et les domestiques sont des automates.</p>
<p>Margo, jeune comédienne, décide d&#8217;enquêter sur la mort d&#8217;une ancienne maîtresse, Aurélie Couturier, sur le point de se marier. La presse parle de suicide, mais Margot n&#8217;y croit pas, surtout après avoir rendu visite à son père, un riche banquier qui semble intimidé par deux hommes à la mine patibulaire.</p>
<p>Elle va mener l&#8217;enquête avec son frère, Théo, psychiatre progressiste et trouver le secret de cette famille et les relations à l&#8217;opium et à une vieille expédition qui a mal tourné et qui a été étouffée. L&#8217;éther n&#8217;est bien sûr pas innocent, c&#8217;est d&#8217;ailleurs le sujet d&#8217;étude de Théo et le sujet de grandes perplexités&#8230;</p>
<p>Le tout se passe sur fond d&#8217;exposition universelle, grandiose, comme il se doit!</p>
<p>Alors vu comme ça, ça pourrait paraître bien, et d&#8217;ailleurs peut-être l&#8217;aimerez-vous, mais ce qui m&#8217;a gênée dans ma lecture, c&#8217;est le ton grandiloquent utilisé par les deux auteurs, ton qui m&#8217;a fait presque buter dans l&#8217;avancée de l&#8217;histoire que j&#8217;aurais trouvée certainement très bien racontée autrement&#8230; (l&#8217;histoire est racontée en alternance par Margot et par son frère)</p>
<p>J&#8217;ai découvert ce roman lors de ma quête de romans steampunk (que vous pourrez<a href="http://laloula.wordpress.com/2009/04/19/cest-a-cause-de-fashion-et-un-peu-de-vous-aussi/" target="_blank"> redécouvrir ici</a>) et j&#8217;avais plutôt décidé de ne pas en parler. Mais là je m&#8217;y remet à cause du <a href="http://labq2colombes.canalblog.com/archives/2009/11/02/15604036.html#comments" target="_blank">Challenge de GeishaNellie</a> et de l&#8217;envie que j&#8217;avais de promouvoir ce genre en particulier, même si du coup ce n&#8217;est pas le meilleur livre pour ça!! Mais je sais qu&#8217;il existe par ici des fans de Fabrice Colin&#8230;</p>

<p>It is not often you are disappointed by the introduction to an anthology, usually you have to wait at least until the first story. Apparently some people on a website said SF isn&#8217;t fun any more so Lalumière and Halpern have put together this book as a riposte. They seem to have a somewhat limited conception of fun since they use the word &#8220;sardonic&#8221; four times in the brief two pages of the introduction.</p>
<p>It is also unpleasantly backslapping whilst at the same time smarmily buttering up the reader for their good taste in buying the volume. It is refreshing that the editors are up front about the fact not all the stories are actually SF but they ruin this with the self-aggrandising final comment that they are &#8220;too daring to be labelled &#8220;mundane&#8221; or &#8220;mainstream&#8221;".</p>
<p>Anyway, the axes of measurement will be quality and (obviously) wit but I&#8217;m slightly worried about what wit might mean in this context. </p>

He will be interviewed by Kate Bodley.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Nach ein paar Tagen Pause vom Internet, zumindest von diesem Blog, wieder zurück. Man hat eben auch als Halbrentner viel zu tun. Eigentlich wollte ich nahezu täglich meinen Alltag bloggen, aber manchmal schafft man&#8217;s nicht oder ist zu luschig, setzt andere Prios, etc. Vielleicht sollte ich mir vornehmen, morgens nach dem Frühstück ein paar Zeilen zu schreiben. Werd&#8217;s mal probieren.<br />
Meine Teilnahme an der <em><strong>Quodlibet</strong></em>, der hamburger Antiquariatsverkaufsmesse, habe ich sehr genossen. Nicht übermässig viel verkauft, aber doch zufriedenstellend. Die gemachten Erfahrungen, den direkten Umgang mit Kunden und Besuchern, Kollegen usw. fand ich sehr erfrischend. Insgesamt bestärkte mich der Ablauf der Messe darin, dass das Gutenbergzeitalter seinem Ende entgegengeht. Viele Kollegen wollen das nicht wahrhaben, aber die Zeichen hierzu scheinen nicht nur am Horizont auf, sondern verwandeln sich in gleissende Spots, denen man nicht mehr ausweichen kann. Es wird mich dennoch nicht aufhalten und entmutigen, meiner Nebenbeschäftigung mit dem gedruckten Buch nachzugehen.</p>
<p>Gestern abend war eine tolle Runde bei <strong>Beckmann</strong> mit sehr interessantem Thema: Internet und wie es uns und unsere Welt verändert, der gläserne Mensch und die Allmacht des Netzes.. Die öffentliche Diskussion über diesen &#8220;Machtkampf&#8221; zwischen Mensch und System wird spürbar stärker und findet Eingang in sonst flaue Talkshows. Ich bin überzeugt, dass es nur noch wenige Jahre dauern wird, dass das Internet-System noch  rasantere Geschwindigkeit aufnehmen wird zur Vervollkommnung und Entwicklung eines eigenen Handelns und Bewußtseins. Vielleicht wird es schrecklich werden für uns Menschen oder segensreich, noch kann man das nicht sagen. Aber der Weg zur allumfassenden Verselbständigung und Mächtigkeit ist weit beschritten und nicht mehr aufzuhalten.<br />
<strong>Karl Olsberg </strong>hat eine mögliche schreckliche Variante in seinem Thriller &#8220;<a href="http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/3746623677?ie=UTF8&#38;tag=a0c55-21&#38;linkCode=as2&#38;camp=1638&#38;creative=19454&#38;creativeASIN=3746623677" target="_blank"><em><strong>Das System</strong></em></a>&#8221; vorweggenommen.</p>
<p>Wahrscheinlich sind die Zeiten nicht mehr fern, wo die beiden Google Gründer <strong>Sergey Brin</strong> und <strong>Larry Page</strong> sich nichts sehnlicher wünschen, sie könnten die Büchse der Pandora, die sie mit ihrer Suchmaschine und allen Konsequenzen, Entwicklungen daraus geöffnet haben, wieder schliessen. Aber diese Lawine wird weiterlaufen und vieles begraben. Die Firma Google hatte die besten Absichten, wird es eines Tages heissen.<br />
Aufregende Zeiten in denen wir leben; man braucht wirklich keine SF mehr zu lesen, wenn sich in der Realität mit der Entwicklung des Internets und allen damit zusammenhängenden Themen eine Entwicklung zeigt, die weit über die Phantasien von <strong>Philip K. Dick</strong> oder <strong>Arthur C. Clarke</strong> hinausgehen. Bei mir formen sich auch einige Themen und Ideen für aktuelle SF-Geschichten; vielleicht sollte ich mir Zeit nehmen und versuchen, es zu Papier (haha) zu bringen.</p>
<p>Heute stand im Hamburger Abendblatt, dass die Post ihr normales Briefgeschäft bald einstellen wird, zumindest ein völlig neues Konzept anbieten will, nämlich eine Umstellung der besonderen Art: angeboten wird dann, dass E-Mails postalisch auf Papier den Empfängern zugestellt wird. Damit ist dann das Schreiben, das Anfertigen eines papierenen Briefes oder Dokumentes völlig out, aber man kann dann über die Post dem Empfänger noch etwas Materielles zustellen lassen. Ich glaube durchaus, dass dieses Konzept erfolgversprechend ist, aber es wird zu  einem Nischendasein führen, zumal sich die Post das bezahlen lassen will/muss. Damit ist für mich das Schicksal der Post auch klar. der Konzern wird sich auf diesem Sektor zum Nischenbetrieb entwickeln, mit der Folge von unzähligen Arbeitsplatzverlusten. <strong>Howard Rheingold</strong>, ein sehr kluger Internetbeobachter und Autor,  hat schon vor mehr als zehn Jahren derartige Entwicklungen (völlige Digitalisierung/ Virtualisierung) vorausgesehen.</p>
