Recently I have started playing with the Puppy (Puppy Linux 4.3.1, that is). I liked the speed and ease of using it so much that I decided to do a full install on my hard drive. It’s very lightweight and very fast.

However, after the initial phase of likeness, I realized that it is missing a lot of things —- including the build essentials (e.g., gcc).  That means Puppy has trimmed its fat in order to become so lean (the .iso file is about 100 MB)  that it does not have some of the necessary packages — especially the ones, that someone may need to compile packages from the source code if there is a need. However, the default software suit is very nice and useful: I haven’t seen such a good collection in a such a lean size before.

But, the tools I was looking for was not in their repository either. After searching in puppy forums, I realized that I need a package called devx-431.sfs [download link].  But for a hard puppy (a full installation of puppy on the hard drive) it is a special case if you want to install a .sfs file —- which I had a hard time figuring out skimming through various posts in the forum (which are very old by the way!).

However, it is explained in the main website in a very clear fashion (I wish I looked there first!).

1. Click on the devx_xxx.sfs in a ROX-Filer window to mount it.
2. Open a terminal in the mounted directory.
3. # cp -a --remove-destination ./* /mnt/hda2/
4. # sync
5. Close the terminal.
6. Click on the devx_xxx.sfs file to unmount it

Note, the ‘–remove-destination’ option is essential. If you only use ‘-f’ to force overwrite, it will follow (dereference) a symlink, that can cause unexpected overwrites.

I had a problem performing the second step. If you save the devx_xxx.sfs file in the /root directory (which is startup directory, i.e. if you do a “cd ~” you’ll reach there), then the mounted directory will look like “+root+devx_xxx.sfs/”. Just cd to there in the console and perform the following steps above.

They look surprisingly good considering they have a decided left twist on the foot section. I think it comes from knitting through the back loop. I’ll know the next time.

The plan today is to hang out with Melissa and work on finishing some crisis-level knitting. Nobody’s going to die if I don’t finish the knitting and crocheting, but I am truly sick of looking at some of these UFOs. I want them finished.

Jag blev i en kommentar till ett tidigare inlägg anklagad för att vilja lägga ner det nationella studentinflytandet. Så är inte fallet, men det gör ju det hela mer angeläget att ge min bild av vad en nationell studentröst innebär.

För närvarande drivs den nationella studentrösten av SFS. En organisation som står inför kraftigt minskade resurser och en total omvälvning av sin verksamhet. En organisation som också har skral representation från yrkesprogram (ekonomer, jurister, läkare m.m.). Nära nog inga teknologer är med, undantaget är Lund (och Uppsala, genom US).

That’s it.

Det är vad som erbjuds. SFS sätter agendan, svarar på remisser och uttalar sig för alla Sveriges studenter. Bristen på självransakan blir smärtsamt tydlig bara man läser SFS självbeskrivning på sin hemsida.

Detta anser inte jag är en nationell studentröst, jag anser att det är ett centralistiskt åsiktsmonopol. Bilden tangerar återigen det jag anser vara kärnan i beslutet om egen kår. På vilken nivå agendan spikas, och vart resurserna fokuseras. För mig är SFS i det närmaste illegitimt och att de ensamma åtnjuter status av officiell remissinstans i studentfrågor anser jag personligen vara direkt skadligt för mina intressen.

En diversifiering av den nationella studentrösten är i högsta grad önskvärd. På samma sätt som den är det på universitets-, fakultets-, program-, institutions-, och kursnivå. Detta för att utkristalisera just de frågor som är gemensamma. För att möjliggöra starka insatser just där de får mest gynsam effekt.

Möjliga plattformar för detta skulle kunna vara de övriga nationella samarbeten som SFS nämner, men avfärdar, på sin hemsida. Samarbeten som kan utgöra basen för gemensam åsiktsbildning, men där ingen tvingas in under en central doktrin. Diskussionsgrupper för att ta fram gemensamma debattartiklar och åsiktsunderlag, men där varje kår får möjlighet att hantera sitt deltagande från fall till fall.

Plattformar där förändring sker genom att studenter som har gemensamma frågor gör gemensam sak för att driva sin fråga på sin högskola. Nationell koordination och samverkan för att nå resultat på lokal nivå. Inga konstigheter, målet med all studentpåverkan. Det är bara medlen som är annorlunda.

Det svenska högskolesystemet är reglerat i central lagstiftning, via högskoleförordningen och andra dokument. Reglementet baserar sig dock på subsidiaritet och autonomi. De enskilda högskolorna är i stort fria att följa sina egna vägar. På lägre nivåer gäller detsamma, via fakultet, sektion, institution ända ner till enskilda forskare och lärare. Den fria forskningen/forskaren är ett centralt ideal.
I denna struktur sker förändring enklast på så låg nivå som möjligt. Beslut uppifrån uppfattas som en inskränkning av denna frihet och möts med motstånd. Även nationell samverkan är således beroende av lokal förankring.

Du skapar inte ett mer effektivt kursutvärderingsarbete genom att lagstifta fram krav. Du gör det genom att få lärare och lokala administratörer att se att det är en angelägen fråga för just de studenter som de möter i sin vardag.

Denna önskan om lokal påverkan innebär på intet sätt ett avskaffande av den nationella nivån. Den innebär en omstrukturering. Det innebär att arbeta på det sätt som ger störst chans till reell förändring.

Frågor ska lyftas: “Det här var klurigt, kan vi ta hjälp av någon annan kår?”

Frågor ska samordnas: “Vi har pratat med våra studenter, och de tycker det här! Vi har också pratat med Chalmers och KTH, och deras studenter driver samma sak. De vill se samma förändring, fixa!”

Frågor ska ges gemensamma plattformar: “Denna inlaga i debatten stöds av 78% av Sveriges naturvetare, såsom de representeras av sina kårer… …lista med sjuttioelva kårordförandes underskrifter.”

Om dessa arbetssätt står som grund för “den nationella studentrösten” möjliggörs framförandet av skilda åsikter. Möjligheten öppnar sig för samarbeten inom specifika områden att föra debatt på nationell nivå och yttra sina önskemål om förändring och förbättring. Samtidigt minskas inte möjligheten att föra de “äkta” studentöverskridande frågorna. Jag är övertygad om att ett yttrande eller en debattartikel med 60+ underskrifter från olika kårordförande runt om i landet inte skulle passera obemärkt.

Det som skulle gå förlorat skulle vara en organisations förbehållna rätt att uttala sig för alla studenter, trots bristande underlag.

Jag tror inte att studentsveriges samlade enighet och oenighet ryms i två fokusfrågor och 9-15 sidor text.

Allt detta berör kårfrågan genom det enkla samband att Uppsala studentkår i dagsläget har valt att ge sitt stöd åt SFS. UTN å andra sidan verkar just genom ett av dessa lösa samarbeten inriktade på det “smala” området teknologer och naturvetare. Samarbetet heter Reftec och är idag mest ett forum för utbyte av erfarenhet och idéer. Strömningar inom UTN har dock arbetat för att utöka denna kanal, och om möjligt finna andra liknande. Detta just för att kunna lyfta frågor till en högre nationell arena då UTN i dagsläget är förnekad representation på mellannivå (universitetet).

Today I went to school .. I go there at the begining of every year, this is becoming a tradition .. It’s hard not to go there, It’s been since we left!!

Anyway, around 10:00 Am I was there, I had some problems with the new doorman , he’s new and don’t know us .. he also had orders not to let anyone in because of Swine Flu!! :S

After a while, his phone rang and he was so busy .. so I got the chance to sneak inside .. Noway I would have gone home that easy!

My brother told me that the uniform has changed, I saw it a couple of times on my way home from college, now I got to see it in reality .. it looks nice

I quickly made my tour, It feels very good that everybody remembers you and greets you by your name .. I had these warm handshakings and had some little chats with my lovely teachers ..

I had another post in mind today at the Neighborhood, but this news was sent to me by my fellow alumni and its getting my blood up.

In an earlier post on geography, I mentioned a course I took at Georgetown called “Map of the Modern World”, a 1-credit boot camp of world geography and geopolitics.   As a student at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service (SFS) I had to take this course as a graduation requirement–since the qualification exam rendered me, in Professor Pirtle’s thundrous voice, “geographically ignorant.”  Even though it was a killer for a one-credit course, it was one of the most rewarding courses I took.  I know of no other university that has a geography course that even comes close.

Yet, just as it does in the world of education, the “boutique” theories seem to be adopted by administrators as if they were flavors of the month.  Such is the case at SFS, where the new dean, James Reardon-Anderson, wants to take over the course personally.  Instead of the classic geopolitical survey that each student in the SFS has received (gratefully) for decades, Reardon-Anderson plans to restructure the course as a study of geographic forces and human interactions.  The grit-and-grind of the Mercator map is replaced by the soft Venn diagrams of interactions, encounters and relationships.

The scholarship behind this change shouldn’t be new to many people–the work of Jared Diamond, professor at UCLA and author of the popular book Guns, Germs, and Steel.  Diamond’s work postulates that the driving forces behind human interaction, as well as human inequality, are the geographic forces that have shaped the development of Earth’s multitude of societies.

Diamond’s work is not at issue.  What is at issue is using his theories in a course that was never designed as an anthropological or sociological survey.  To really see the difference, here’s the old course description:

Map of the Modern World – 1 Credit

This one-credit-hour course is designed to provide you with regional overviews of the evolution of the world political map since 1800. The objective of this course is to enhance your basic working knowledge of the political map of the modern world as a first step in understanding world events and international relations. The method of instruction
will be lectures supported by a heavy dose of maps and short outside readings. The lectures will focus on the evolution of the modern political map of each region and on major nationalist, ethnic, boundary, and territorial conflicts and tension areas.

Here is the new course description:

Map of the Modern World – 1 Credit

This one-credit course is designed to provide basic knowledge of the physical and political geography of the world. Weekly lectures cover the fundamental forces that shape the physical geography and the effects of physical geography on human behavior in ten regions of the world. The final exam covers information presented in the lectures, the location and capitals of contemporary states, and the identification of major geographical features. The final examination is multiple choice and graded pass-fail. The course is required for graduation from the School of Foreign Service.

As a point of clarification, ths course was always a requirement to graduate and was always graded pass-fail.  Yet the differences are obvious.  Map of the Modern World was a course designed for future diplomats and international leaders in order to establish a baseline knowledge of the world and its machinations.  Period.  Since the SFS was designed as a school for training future diplomats, this makes perfect sense.

Reardon-Anderson’s version is cute.  It’s too cute.  In fact, it’s more like an elective course than a requirement for a school of international relations.  Because of the new dean’s penchant for the theory du jour, students at Georgetown will be less than adequately prepared for the roles they aspire to after graduation.  No 1-credit course can do justice to Diamond’s theories while preserving the original goal of establishing background knowledge of the political world to students of international affairs. 

It’s embarrassing that such a change is even considered, let alone approved.  Climate change, human interactions, geographic forces–these are all worthy of study.  But not in Map.

This leads to my last point.   Map of the Modern World was a rite of passage for students in the SFS program at Georgetown, the oldest school for international studies dating back to 1919.  Every year, each spring, freshman entered the large lecture hall in the Reiss Science Building for 45 minutes of backbreaking maps, charts, definitions, treaties, Latin terms such as “uti possidetes” (one of my old classmates please correct my spelling), and the logjam of minutia that make the modern international system. 

Damnit, that boot camp did a body good, and no boutique theories or Johnny-come-lately techniques should mess up a good thing.

I’m calling on all my former SFS alumni, alumni from other Georgetown schools, even non-alumni that visit the Neighborhood to take action and stop Reardon-Anderson’s quest to sink the SFS into “geographic ignorance.”

Lets save at least one piece of our education that actually worked.  Show the administration at SFS that some cows are too damned sacred to make into hamburger.

So for my first homework assignment in HTML for INFO 1300, I had to come up with a new product and make a web page for it as my way of marketing. So as you’d expect, I tried to come up with some sports device that hasn’t been invented yet. Boy was that hard. At first I was thinking of a tennis machine that can move side to side on the baseline and shoot balls in all different directions. One search away and I find that there already is such a think called the Tennis Machine Super Coach. Then I went searching over to creativitypool.com and the ideas just started to branch from there. I find out that there already is a machine that lets you use radar to track your golf ball and there was this device called OnPar, so to extend from that I came up with this. OnPar had bad reviews with similar features to what I came up with and I was greatly disappointed discovering the product after writing everything up, but didn’t want to change everything after the fact. I use pictures because the only way to get it on the web is through the course’s server which apparently only I could see…

Magnify your page so that you might have a better chance at reading the content. Took me all day. Sad, I know.



At first the code I wrote, which defined the structure of the page, is not passing the XHTML 1.0 Strict validator, which was truly frustrating until I realized I wasn’t nesting the tags properly. It’s pretty basic stuff in HTML so don’t laugh. Ha.

But to put that aside for now, I am now off to draw the web design on paper for how the page would look with all the colors and pretty presentation with CSS.

This is what I came up with so far. Hopefully it’s good enough for now. I will be handing in my hand drawn paper design colored in with colored pencils, because I lack the ability to complete the picture into an actual image.

My layout for the product web page done by hand, scanned, and then colors are slowly being added.

And in the end it came out totally different. This is what I’ll be handing in. Colors have been added after.

Look familiar? Haha.

Den gångna veckan har bjudit på en hel del nyheter. I onsdags gick högskoleminister Tobias Krantz (fp) ut och försvarade något märkligt den nyordning som gör att gymnasiebetyg som är äldre än tio år i praktiken kommer att nedvärderas jämfört med nyare betyg. Således blir det svårare för något äldre personer att komma in på högskolan. Krantz kommenterade i DN att det vore “absurt” om betyg gick att jämföra över tid, vilket vi på SSCO brännmärkte som en orimlig inställning som går emot tanken om livslångt lärande. Fortsättning följer sannolikt.

Så kom då beskedet om 10 000 nya högskoleplatser under nästa år, varav 2 400 till lärosäten i Stockholms län. SSCO välkomnade nyheten, men kommenterade i TV4, DN och SvD med frågan: Var ska dessa studenter egentligen bo? Är militärtält verkligen en långsiktigt hållbar lösning för en nation med kunskapspolitiska ambitioner? Är Mats Odells idéer om andrahandsuthyrning tillräckliga för att komma till rätta med den kris som nu har drabbat samtliga av Sveriges större utbildningsorter?

SFS synnerligen vältajmade rikstäckande bostadsrapport gjorde att nyheten smög sig upp på såväl DN:s förstasida som in i Rapports kvällssändningar, och betyget på samtliga inblandade organisationers mediala arbete blir således det något ålderdomliga VG+.

Hi my last update was only yesterday but i have just watch Paul’s new vlog for the streamline funnel system.

On the 7Th of august and am very pleased with what he had to say today at streamline funnel system the payment issues have been completed and will be seeing your money on the 16th onwards of prospects you gained in July month.

On the story about the guy that had not had his refund he has not replied to say he has got his money back yet but there was an update on the refunds issues

Paul did say there was a glitch in the support system some time last week

while they were away because they have been to a seminar last week and while your away from work thing do go wrong and you go back to a nightmare that’s happened to me many a time and i only pack box’s for a job

I’m an packer and dispatch supervisor the funny thing is i only supervise myself and i do now when you go away and come back things go wrong.

The mass refund from the first problem with the credit card has been refunded from Friday the 7Th of august so your credit card statement should start to show up on them in a though days.

The streamline funnel system has never had that money that was first taken out of your account they never did.

So now is the issue on the broadcasts they have started to go out and 1100 prospects have been gained on and from the leads going out.

There has been more confusion made by paul on the payment structure the dates have been changed in other words when are we getting paid.

Anyway back to the update if rebilled before the month ended and the july31 cut off date on commissions gathered up to 31st of July were going to be paid out up to 7 days after the 1st of august now the announcement is 15 days after 31st July to give room for refunds and charge backs.

To me this sounds like lots of moving the goal posts to please themselves

witch brings the issue of paul birdsall is not running this business right at all

were told to do our bit and market this now even though we were told that the  streamline funnel system would do this for us “no marketing because we would get it wrong”.

So with all this marketing going on it may be that the emails never were being sent out it`s made by our marketing doing the work for him can anybody let me know if they have got prospect`s without doing there own marketing  if you could leave me a comment please that would be great.

But if that is not true then i will take it back. I did have a comment posted on this blog just yesterday some saying that they liked my blog some wanting me to explain the last part of my last post and i say thanks for taking the time to post.

But someone said that they were asking for a refund through the support post this guy is very upset about the hole thing and had no reply from streamline funnel system yet with his refund so paul if your reading this you need to get your house in order and give people there money back.

Your a stand up guy and you are trying to be as transparent as possible with the video blog and forum i trust you paul but some people are upset by the problems that we are getting i cant believe that i`m doing so much ranting about this system.

So there we have the last announcement is you wont get paid until the 15th of august for July prospects that you have gained.

I söndags kväll kvittrade jag om att det var uckigt tidigt att lyssna på debatt mellan Johanna Nylander och Jytte Guteland (och det stämde ju, jag lyssnade inte på den då) och jag lovade mig själv att ta igen det via nätet (tack för det licenspengarna!).

Ämnet för debatten var de bespottade ungdomsförbunden och vilken roll de spelar, spelat, ska spela. Eller nåt sånt iaf.
Min grundinställning till det var att jag nog skulle hålla med Jytte mer än Johanna i den här frågan men att det inte var svart eller vitt. Så här i efterhand kan man ju konstatera att går man tillbaka till kärnfrågan och den ursprungliga ledaren i Expressen så stämmer min tes. Jag håller mer med Jytte än Johanna även om man kan skära ganska kraftigt i texten och bli av med onödigt dravvel som jag inte tycker tillför debatten något av värde (se nedan). Radiodebatten var tyvärr ganska tunn, tidig måndagsmorgon är väl inte idealet, men i grunden var debattörerna rätt överrens även om frågan om “avskaffande” givetvis var en vattendelare.

Jag har ingen egen bakgrund i något politiskt parti (varken ungdomsförbund, student dito eller på annat sätt) så jag vet inte riktigt vad jag talar om här. Det närmsta man kommer är väl Sveriges Förenade Studentkårer som jag har viss erfarenhet av sedan min (oavslutade) tid som kåraktiv i Kalmar och Blekinge. Jag är nog i grunden ganska positivt inställd till företeelsen ungdomsförbund men inser att jag närmar mig bästföre-datumet för medlemsskap med ganska rappa steg så jag kommer inte ta reda på hur det är på riktigt.

Hur som helst, när jag bryter ner Johannas ledare i Expressen så inser jag att jag håller med henne om analysen men inte om slutsatsen. Ungefär samma tycker jag mig hitta hos Jytte även om hon tror mer på möjligheten att påverka moderpartiet än vad jag gör (fattas annars=)).
Johanna tar ju upp de fungerande rörelserna i Miljöpartiet och Piratpartiet som undantag till tesen att ungdomsförbunden inte funkar. Jag är inte övertygad om att Ung Pirat fungerar, det är lite tidigt att svara på och jag har om möjligt ännu sämre koll på dem. Grön Ungdom är så vitt jag vet det enda av de sju riksdagspartierna som inte har ett eget åsiktspaket, man “lyder” under moderpartiets åsiktsprogram. Det känns sunt. Vill en person ändra något så ska det ändras i Miljöpartiet och Grön Ungdom ska inte stå på barrikaderna och tjöta emot nåt som Miljöpartiet är för (övervakningsdebatten tjänar som bra exempel för de flesta övriga partier i frågan…). Nånstans här påpekar Johanna att moderpartierna behöver lära sig lyssna och ta in åsikter från ungdomarna och det är ju det som är kärnan. Det är detta jag håller med om. Att avskaffa ungdomsförbuden kanske kan vara en del i att trycka in ungdomarna i moderpartierna men det kanske inte är någon som tjänar på det.
Partierna är idag byråkratiska under som används för att få det politiska Sverige att snurra runt och inte säcka ihop. Det är därför vi har externa tankesmedjor, åsiktsbildande debatt finns i partierna men följer troligen ett ganska förutsägbart mönster som följer cyklerna mellan val, nomineringsstopp, motionsstopp, kongress, nyval mm. Schemalagd debatt har väl aldrig varit särdeles spännande. Bättre då med aktiv opinionsbildning av externa (eller “externa” för den delen) aktörer. Ungdomsförbunden borde vara en del av detta.

Jonas Morian skriver klarsynt och tydligt det som gnager i bakhuvudet på mig.

Utan grundläggande skolning i politiska processer – det som Expressen kallar “låtsasdemokrati” – på klubb-, krets- och distriktsårsmöten, kongresser och annat, är det svårt att kunna ta uppdrag i nämnder och fullmäktigeförsamlingar. Där fyller ungdomsförbunden en viktig roll.

Jag ger honom inte helt rätt, han förutsätter att det svenska byråkratiska systemet är en maskin som inte vill släppa in nya, det kanske stämmer men det måste det banne mig bli ändring på i så fall. Hade jag inte fått ett bra mottagande när jag pysslade med utbildningsbevakning och studenters rättigheter på BTH så hade det aldrig gått, eller framförallt så hade jag blivit så sjukt jävla förbannad att det hade blivit skandallikt. Jag tror på systemet och vill tro på framtiden, ni som sitter i det får banne mig hjälpa till där.
Under min tid på BTH i nämnder och organ var det aldrig problem. Samma sak gäller studentkårens kringorganisationer; lokalt med linjeföreningar och sektioner, nationellt med utbildningsnätveket OSS och sammanslutning inom SFS eller för den delen i arbetet tillsammans med SFS. Att skola de nya är en så sjukt naturlig del, det tjänar alla på.

Så det lustiga är att jag ser det som att alla som jag läst i frågan är överrens. Det finns en riktigt bra pryl med ungdomsförbunden och det är att de är en del av skolningen för hur man bedriver svensk politik. Även Johanna Nylander tycker detta mellan raderna, hon ser dock hellre att nån annan struktur utför det. Må så vara.
Medan SVD seglar ut och röker på om Ung Allians och jag vet inte vad så skriver DN i sin dräpa att ungdomsförbundens storlek är problematisk. Jag vet inte vilken av de båda ledarsidorna som fick mest hybris i frågan. Bra inlägg i debatten var de då inte.

Letade efter saker med kraftord på google idag och ramlade över ett ganska kul blogginlägg som jag inte sett tidigare. (Bara ett?!?)

STOPPA PRESSARNA!

Hittade en till pryl i det fördolda i den där sökningen. Via nån Pär Gustafsson så visar det sig att jag fick in en insändare i Sydöstran i våras, hade inte den blekaste aning. Pärs kommentarer är väl något mer insiktsfulla än de som Sydöstrans läsare lämnat, har inte för avsikta att kommentera dem så här tre månader senare.

Jag har knappt hunnit landa efter två hektiska veckor, men tänkte ändå bjuda på ett litet sammandrag av vad som har fyllt min tillvaro den senaste tiden.

1. Almedalen, naturligtvis. SSCO har varit där som gäster och observatörer i några år, men bjöd nu för första gången på ett eget arrangemang i samarbete med TCO. It´s the Education, Stupid! var temat för såväl kampanjandet på Donners plats som måndagmorgonens välbesökta seminarium där bland annat Tobias Krantz gjorde ett av sina första framträdanden efter tillträdet som högskoleminister. Med sig i panelen hade han Mikael Damberg (s), Kerstin Norén, rektor för Karlstad universitet, och Henrik Steinbrecher från PricewaterhouseCoopers. Alltsammans utmärkt modererat av Sofia Karlsson.

2. Tillträdet som SSCO:s ordförande. Skedde i teorin den 1 juli, men i praktiken redan i samband med att SSCO åkte ner till Almedalen. Det har varit mycket nyttigt att få inleda ordförandeskapet i ett så stimulerande sammanhang som det Politikerveckan i Visby utgör.

3. Nätverksträffen i Göteborg tillsammans med Lunds Universitets Studentkårer (LUS) och Göteborgs Förenade Studentkårer (GFS), dvs SSCO:s regionala motsvarigheter i syd och väst. Utan att avslöja för mycket kan jag med lätthet konstatera att det ser mycket lovande ut inför det kommande året, och att jag är glad och stolt över att få samverka med så kompetenta och engagerade personer.

4. Media har redan insett att bostadsbristen för studenter ser ut att bli värre än på mycket länge, vilket inte vill säga lite. SSCO, LUS, GFS och SFS har under den senaste veckan figurerat i ett stort antal medier: DN, P3 Nyheter, Ekot, GP, TV4, etc.

Avslutningsvis ett litet bildkollage, och jag tackar på förhand Johan Norén och Klas-Herman för att jag på ett okynnigt vis snyltar på deras fotokonst.
