My friend sent me a Youtube link yesterday that I couldn’t watch due to college application work. However, I finally decided to take a look at the video once she told me that it had something to do with a nearly extinct bird species called the kakapo (watch it!). In this video, some New Zealanders film the last remaining male kakapo parrot. When this bird dies, the entire species goes extinct. Suddenly, the photographer is “attacked” by the parrot. But actually, he isn’t “attacked.” Instead, he’s being shagged (yes I know) by the rare parrot. For those of you who do not know what being shagged is, perhaps you should watch the video. I find it really interesting how the parrot is so aggressive in attempted mating because he is the last of his kind on the entire planet. The question I cannot help but ask is whether the parrot has become desperate in reproduction due to a need to keep his species alive or due to the lack of female birds. If it is the former, how does the bird know his species is dwindling? If it is the latter, does the bird actually enjoy it? The commentary to this video makes the bird seem human in a way: For example, the parrot is called “old fashioned” with “sideburns” and a “Victorian Jenkins face”. But most importantly, the parrot’s mating behavior quite resembles that of some human beings.

Are you on the verge of trying online dating? The portals providing online dating services vary and all of them taken together are a big industry today. That means people derive results from these sites and it appears internet dating has come to stay.

Be assured that it is possible to find dating partners online. However, only the members who have provided their pictures taste success on these portals. The more well known online dating websites screen members personally. This is obviously done to flush out characters of dubious characters.

All you have to do is to try one of the numerous sites that offer online dating and personals. Give it a try. It might so happen that you do no longer to see the already seen faces on going out, but do not despair. Many a person in different age brackets from different geographical locations is searching for a soul mate on the net. May be it is you. You just need to choose your soul mate from the numerous sites that offer online dating and personals.

The fact may surprise you that there are actually a number of websites that are very thorough in screening their members. They will ask you a lot of questions before they attempt to match you with a partner. Dating online can both be funny and serious depending on one’s leanings or it could be both. New online dating services are being born every other day.

So far the effectiveness these online dating services are concerned, the opinions tend to vary. However if one follows a few rules, there is no doubt that he or she would surely enjoy and succeed at online dating. It can not be denied that the internet is simply too big a resource to be ignored by those of us who are serious about finding a partner, lover, or a friend here.

Has regular dating bored you to death? Then why not try this thing called online dating? It is almost instantaneous and it is different. And it is only here that you can cross the physical and even cultural boundaries seamlessly. Although the concept of finding a life partner is not a very old one and is at the same time seems to be surrounded by controversy, you can get success here by following the guidelines given below.

When you are joining a dating site, please do not forget to say something about yourself. Please say a few words about your lifestyle, your interests and the type of person you are aspiring to meet. At this stage, you are possibly practicing to find the right guy or the right girl for yourself. In all probability, your first online date is not going to turn into marriage. Dating will give you a good number of choices to know people and when you find someone you enjoy spending time with, you realize it is now time to take a decision. Please bear this in mind when you are dating online.

Here I am, Probably just when you had given up all hope that I was going to return to blogging

Here I am,

Probably just when you had given up all hope that I was going to return to blogging…

It has been that long that I don’t know whether to continue on from the last post or to start with more recent times!

Ok, Well to date one of the most memorable things of the trip happened just a few weeks ago and I know to a lot of people it was nothing! I had just got into bed and was reading for a minute or to when I felt the dog under the bed pushing up, then as I thought for a second I realised I hadn’t let the dogs into my room a little puzzled I looked around the room to realise that there was a lot of things moving, It went on for about a minute in which time I had to get up and put a hand to the flat screen tv on the dresser before it toppled over and that was that I had witnessed my first Earthquake, thankfully no damage was caused as it was approx 90 miles deep and deep enough not to cause any waves!

So back a bit… All in all I had a great time on the Sydney to Cairns leg with Simon, and although we punched in a fair few miles we managed to squeeze in a few activities and find some nice eatery’s along the way, the second night of the rd trip we ended up in the country town of Murwillumbah were we camped in the show grounds, for dinner we found ourselves at a kinda trendy cafe called Luffley Cafe where most of the seating was on the street and being a Friday night they had live music in the form of the Lovely Vanessa (Guitar, Vocals) and Richard (drums) I would recommend it to anyone…

Next day we kept the hammer down to get up towards surfers paradise, stopping for about an hour for some grub and a stroll on the beach where we both managed to get sunburnt all down one side, I had been looking forward to seeing Surfers Paradise but on arrival was very disappointed as it is completely commercialised and reminded of Blackpool or the likes but with better weather, 40 years to late I guess! On up the rd a tad we pulled into Water World hoping to get a wash but they were closing up for the day, so with a little time on our hands we called Chris Brown a friend from home who moved out here back in march to the Brisbane area, finally luck was on our side and Chris was just on his way home from work and only lived a few Km’s away so we met up with himself and Shaz for an hour before getting on the rd for Somerset Dam, unfortunately it was dark and I have no idea what the countryside was like on the way up, but going by what was on view the next morning we probably missed some good views. On up the road we stopped at the Australia Zoo of Steve Irwin fame but it was absolutely packed, I think Simon was keen enough to go in for a look see (sorry Simon) but I got back on the road and stopped at the “Big Kart Track” were we had a 30min run on the 1.2Km track which was mighty craic and left us both with some sports related injuries, back on the rd we got the length of Bundaberg but couldn’t find the campsite we where looking for so I backed the van up to the sea break for the night, we were rudely awakend by the cackles of two women fishing on the rocks just at the back of the van, so I swung open the doors and gave them a fair old shock! The craic was good so I got the fishing rod out and threw a line in to and before to long I had the breakfast in the pan! Well, thats where the fun began, while I was preparing breakfast I threw Simon the rod to see if we could make it a feast, what happened next was probably highlight #2 of the trip and makes me laugh everytime it comes to mind, Simon cast out and a bird thought the spinner looked good and made a dive for it and managed to hook it’s foot, so as Simon was calling for assistance I could hardly stand for laughing at him and while trying to catch a breath I managed to grab the camera…

Sorry I didn’t proof read for typo’s etc…

I’ll try and do a bit more tomorrow night…

In Friston Forest, a couple of Firecrests with “even rarer, a single Goldcrest” seen by Bob Edgar (SOS).

As in most places, both birds and birders probably hunkering down – but in between squalls, still one or two Lesser Redpolls around the cricket pitch at Firle, and increasing numbers of Fieldfares and Redwings around the village.

So yes, my long suffering fans… I have returned, perhaps 5 kilograms heavier than when I left, with an immeasurable desire for ostrich biltong, and a nice tan.

The holiday to South Africa rocked. We got to do some familial bonding time, and a fair amount of time got spent with the friends. Mr & Mrs B… many thanks for the awesome trip to Knysna and back… much obliged. Now come and visit us so we can return the favour. Wooz and SPF… it was great to be able to spend so much time with you guys… thanks for taking the leave and making it all possible. Chris and Lily and Megan… thanks for the accomodation and for letting us skank up your bathroom one week before your wedding.

So. This Blog has been built up by three weeks absence, and is bound to be a little longer than normal. As usual, if you want to skip the personal stuff, jump ahead to the line of asterisks at the end of this piece.

South Africa. Well well. It was an absolutely awesome trip. One of my favourite things to do in the whole world is to get a car that I like driving and then to take a long road trip. And the wife and I got to do just that with her family. The four of us piled into their car and drove off on what worked out to be an insanely expensive, but very enjoyable experience. And my god did we shop. Everything from Chutney to Cuckoo Clocks went into that car.

Let’s see, first stop was the Willows in Port Elizabeth. This was a classic little caravan/chalet place, and we got a two-bedroomed chalet for the four of us. Very comfortable, very clean and so close to the sea that even my youngest students could throw a stone into the water from the living room. We were there for two nights… and used the time soaking up some much-needed shopping. And thus began my fixation with finding the perfect pie on the holiday. See… the wife and I recently stopped being vegetarian and started eating seafood. Well… poultry has been added to the pile of edibles now… meaning that Chicken was back on the menu. (For the record, we still don’t eat mammals…. which means that yes, TURKEY is back on the menu for Christmas.) With chicken scratching at the doormat, I started in on Chicken Pies.

Woolworths to the rescue. AWESOME chicken and mushroom pie. Try it. Very good.

An aside – If it feels as if all the wife and I did on this holiday was sleep and eat, well… we feel that way too. It was a great holiday.

After PE, we drove on to Sedgefield…. chosen because it was nice and close to Knysna, which was where our friends Stompie and Jax were getting married. Yes… we did it all on this trip, weddings included. The place in Sedgefield was fantastic, the view was simply unbeatable.

Stompie and Jax threw themselves a Euro-funded Afro-ethnic wedding. And it was really a great evening. Good to be able to catch up with them again, as we hadn’t seen them since leaving Ireland. The wedding itself was out-standing and if their friends are anything to go by, they’ll be blessed in the future.

After the wedding it was a case of doing some family time in and around Knysna and George. We took in the sights of Hoekwil and Wilderness, the former very rustic, the latter full of sea spray.
Much seafood was eaten. Much chicken was eaten.

One of the highlights for the wife and I of the Sedgefield trip was a visit to the Wild Oats Farmer’s market… where local farmers sold their wares. (Mainly foodstuffs, but some raw produce too.) We got to soak up a little culture…

It was here that I found the undisputed BEST chicken pie in South Africa. The Steam Whistle Stop Pie company, operating out of god-knows where, but with a stand at the market.

After Sedgefield, there remained only the trip back to East London, which took much longer than expected. This is because of a little known family problem. Fact: If you place two women with disposable income in the back seat of a car, they will hatch plans to visit as many farm stalls as possible on the way back home. This is in a misguided effort to fill the car with very fattening farm foodstuffs and home produce. Thus, some 600 kilometres, 23 pieces of fudge, a half-dozen bottles of chutney, three full wheels of cheese, and 39 farm stalls later….. the entire Western Cape was denuded of produce, the car was groaning on its springs and we got home. To a huge dinner cooked by my sister in law.

The rest of the trip was spent with friends and family. I got to get in a fair amount of roleplaying with Wooz and the bunch, and even GMed a demo session for Jebb and his bunch. An obnoxiously large amount of time was spent virtually supine on Wooz’ patio drinking coffee… which is the perfect way to conduct oneself on holiday. Besides, the view from there isn’t half bad either.

Three weeks flew by with absolutely no regard for how much it cost us to get there, or indeed just how long 14 hours in economy class feels. (Particularly when you are bloated on fudge and chicken pies.)
There were tears, there were hugs and then we were gone.

To everyone who made the effort, thanks a hell of a lot guys, it was a vastly enjoyable experience.

************

And let’s get on with the jokes and stuff shall we?

The Truth About College:

College is a bunch of rooms where you sit for 2,000 hours or so and
try to memorize things. The 2,000 hours are spread out over four
years. You spend the rest of the time sleeping, partying, and trying to
get dates.

Basically, you learn two kinds of things in college:

    1. Things you will need to know in later life (two hours). 2. Things you
will not need to know in later life (1,998 hours).

The latter are the things you learn in classes whose names end in
-ology, -osophy, -istry, -ics, and so on. The idea is you memorize
these things, then write them down in little exam books, then forget
them. If you fail to forget them, you become a professor and have to stay
in college for the rest of your life.

After you’ve been in college for a year or so, you’re supposed to
choose a major, which is the subject you intend to memorize and
forget the most things about. Here is a very important piece of
advice: Be sure to choose a major that does not involve Known Facts
and Right Answers. This means you must not major in mathematics,
physics, biology, chemistry, or geology because these subjects
involve actual facts.

If, for example, you major in mathematics, you’re going to wander
into class one day and the professor will say: “Define the cosine
integer of the quadrant of a rhomboid binary axis, and extrapolate
your result to five significant vertices.” If you don’t come up with
exactly the answer the professor has in mind, you fail.

The same is true of chemistry: If you write in your exam book that
carbon and hydrogen combine to form oak, your professor will flunk
you. He wants you to come up with the same answer he and all the
other chemists have agreed on. Scientists are extremely snotty about
this.

So you should major in subjects like English, philosophy, psychology, and
sociology – subjects in which nobody really understands what anybody else
is talking about, and which involve virtually no actual facts.

I attended classes in all these subjects, so I’ll give you a quick
overview of each:

ENGLISH: This involves writing papers about long books you have read
little snippets of just before class. Here is a tip on how to get good
grades on your English papers: Never say anything about a book that
anybody with any common sense would say. For example, suppose you are
studying Moby Dick. Anybody with any common sense would say Moby Dick is
a big white whale, since the characters in the book refer to it as a big
white whale roughly 11,000 times. So in your paper, you say Moby Dick is
actually the Republic of Ireland. Your professor, who is sick to death of
reading papers and never liked Moby Dick anyway, will think you are
enormously creative. If you can regularly come up with lunatic
interpretations of simple stories, you should major in English.

PHILOSOPHY: Basically, this involves sitting in a room and deciding
there is no such thing as reality and then going to lunch. You should
major in philosophy if you plan to take a lot of drugs.

PSYCHOLOGY: This involves talking about rats and dreams.
Psychologists are obsessed with rats and dreams. I once spent an
entire semester training a rat to punch little buttons in a certain
sequence, then training my roommate to do the same thing. The rat
learned much faster. My roommate is now a doctor. If you like rats or
dreams, and above all if you dream about rats, you should major in
psychology.

SOCIOLOGY: For sheer lack of intelligibility, sociology is far and
away the number one subject. I sat through hundreds of hours of
sociology courses, and read gobs of sociology writing, and I never
once heard or read a coherent statement. This is because sociologists
want to be considered scientists, so they spend most of their time
translating simple, obvious observations into scientific-sounding code.
If you plan to major in sociology, you’ll have to learn to do the same
thing. For example, suppose you have observed that children cry when they
fall down. You should write: “Methodological observation of the
sociometrical behavior tendencies of prematurated isolates indicates that
a causal relationship exists between groundward tropism and lachrimatory
behavior forms.” If you can keep this up for 50 or 60 pages, you will get
a large government grant.

This weeks musical talent comes to you from the talented Ms. Nina Simone. This one is called Strange Fruit. And if it is depressing, well, it is meant to be. Give yourself a search for the lyrics. Sometimes, I am sad to be a human.

And that is that.. .. if there appears to be a lack of linkage in this blog, sorry… but 3 weeks without internet means that I didn’t find as many interesting things. Next time. K?

Ciao

——-
Day 1
Airport.

Patrick has many many legs!

Fly to Langkawi!
I sat w. Patrick and Sophia.

Went to a Primary School directly for CIP after the flight.
Had lunch @ the school.
Me and Ahchua went round arranging tables and chairs.
Because our jobs were simple and easy, we finished quickly.
And I helped w/ the painting work.

Dumb la. I painted my clothes. -.-
Lalala. It was still fun. Haha.

Afterward, we went to a honeydew farm.
Tried the honeydew and (baby) tomato.
Nice nice.

Checked in Hotel.

The room damn small can!
3 people squeeze into a couple room.
Ahchua, Wendy and I share a room.

Had dinner @ Langkawi Fair.
Shopping afterward!

I bought Patrick & Spongey.
Patrick for me. Spongey for my sister.
Nice of me right?

End of Day 1.

Day 2
Rise and shine @ 7AM!
Had breakfast @ hotel coffee house.

Took ferry to a island called Pulau Payar? Idk.
Hahaha. I tried snorkeling w/ Ahchua being my partner.
Because I don’t know how to swim, she taught me and didn’t see any fish.
I kept grabbing her hand cause I’m so scared I’d fall.

Heh. Patrick and Jiayu also don’t know how swim!
(I thought I was the only one. ><)

Here’s a funny part of how Ahchua taught me:

Caroline: Swimming is like riding bicycle.
Me: I don’t know how to ride a bike! (:

Then she laugh, laugh, laugh and drank her first mouth of seawater!

The facilitator called Simon, came over and taught me too.
Somehow, I don’t know how, I have no water resistance.
I kept turning and turning. -.-

When I somehow ‘mastered’ swimming, I only saw a fish! ~~~~
Because my mask was too loose and the moment I dipped in, fresh seawater came rinsing my eyes!
I drank a lot of seawater. Effing salty.
I felt so concentrated. -.-

But it was fun la.

There’s no fresh water to bathe ourselves, but seawater.
Cause they said, the government wanted to keep the island as nature as possible. -.-

Jungle trekking afterward.
Damn lots of stairs. But the scenery above was nice.

Ferry back to Langkawi and had time to clean up in hotel.
Had dinner @ some random mall and went to see the big Eagle.

I bought a bag for Mama, a photo album for Brother and a tee for Papa.
I’m so nice.

Night was @ Conference Room for workshop.

Day 3
Laman Padi.

The uncle took us thru’ the plants at the farm.

The whole of clique of girls went down to plant padi except Patrick.
It was fun. Thou’ it was dirty and muddy.

Anyway, just FYI, if you believe that 4 clover leaf was what rare kind of plant, like in those kind of typical drama, then you’re wrong.
There was damn lots of it @ the farm and we were allowed to pick.
Pretty.

Back to Hotel for lunch and headed to the second highest peak of Langkawi — Seven Wells.

Trekking again. -.-
I was the last few and another facilitator, Joyce, waited for me.
She’s nice.

Guess what Runming is doing?
(Catching Tadpole. -.-)

And he wore the hotel slippers out! -.-

Back @ hotel and bathed.
Dinner was Thai foods.

It was so spoilt by someone, who made Patrick and I cried.
Just because of a misunderstanding.
I ate my dinner till damn buay song can.

Afterward, they had a surprise birthday celebration for Ryan.
I went off early and had an early night.

Day 4
Woke up @ 5AM.
Flight was @ 8:55AM.

The roads were so deserted and their airport is not 24/7.
When we reached the airport, it was a pitched-dark.
And we had breakfast in the dark.
Romantic right? Haha.

Reach Singapore @ 11AM and had KFC for lunch!

Home sweet home.

Credits of Padi Field photos from Tricia. (:

And I forgot to mention!
The cleaner for room service ate my tidbits!!!!! ):<

——-
I'm so drained now. @@
This took me so lot to post and my eyes are closing!

Last but not least,

I miss ♥Jongggggggggggggg a lot a lot!

today i stumbled across the work of illustrator Kevin Dart and was immediately drawn in by the water

today i stumbled across the work of illustrator Kevin Dart and was immediately drawn in by the watercolory, almost crayon like quality of his work. but with it’s 60’s influenced stylings, i can’t help compare it to Shag or Tim Biskup who are both brilliant artists. but what i like about Dart’s work is that he’s using movie posters as the frame work in which he tells his stories.

so people don’t consider illustration fine art – because it’s narrative? i recently heard this explanation in some of the follow up interviews of “Painting with Fire” – the documentary about Frank Frazetta. i have a hard time with these classifications that have been defined for us because it immediately devalues the work – even if it’s just the perceived value. why is it that when we call something fine art, it’s all of a sudden worth more?

i’m not trying to cheapen what our definitions are but trying to expand upon them… i just know that until we really start showcasing illustration in the same light and with the same respect as traditionally defined fine art, that division will always be there in the publics mind and as a result will reflect in how we think about it, talk about it, and ultimately spend money on it.

What up what up everybody!? I seriously should have called THIS one Lazy Blogger. I mean honestly? A month? Granted my RL has been crazy busy, so excuse me ladies and gents. Anyway, I’ve had some things building up into my inventory so it’s time let it all out. Okay, not ALL of it because I’d have way too many pictures but the highlights is good enough right? Let’s hop into it:

First up here we’ve got a side-by-side of a few things that came out of the latest LeLutka collection. The left features a couple of things that I wanted to talk about. Although it’s actually underneath the huge scarf, there’s this fantastic new, sheer shirt with a lace-front neckline that looks very basic but is very well put together called Portivo. You’ll see in my future posts when I get into the Spring/Summer 2010 shows that a lot of designers got into the sheer fabrics. Essentially this trend is a bit early for the season (for the northern hemisphere), but that’s why threw the big ol’ scarf from The Dogs onto it to keep it warm. The second look up there is also another LeLutka pick. I really dig the light blue going on with this jacket and the tie around the waist really made me want to snag this coat because I don’t really have anything else like it. Draping over the top again is a much smaller, but very nice blue scarf from the new LeLutka collection as well. I don’t know if you know this, but…I’m kind of a big fan of denim. The jeans in this first pic are awesome from Arai. They’ve got a great color to them with a little sandblasting down the front and they’re just an amazing pair of easy-breezy everyday jeans. The other shot features a pair of jeans that are actually way cheap; I mean L$50 cheap from PixelDolls. What I really like about them is that they’re an older pair of jeans that still holds their own fashionably with rolled cuffs that a lot of designers were dropping on the runways.

The look at the dark side of fall here features a couple of different designers out there. Starting on the left we’ve got this fantastically put-together coat from Argrace with a nice v-neck brown sweater underneath from IZUMIYA and a great pair of jeans from COCO. We first got to see some real menswear from COCO in the form of a pair of shoes that showed up during one of the CSR stamps events. In a somewhat recent trip with a friend to COCO for the shirts that wrap around your waist, I noticed that there was a growing selection of menswear to be had at COCO. I bought more than I probably should have, per always, but from what I’ve worn I have not been disappointed in the slightest. One of the interesting things about these jeans that I thought was very well done is how the seam sort of crosses over the front of the leg on the sculpted bottoms and the texture on the jeans follows suit perfectly. The look on the right shows a very nice homage to the Where The Wild Things Are movie. Now I know you’re saying, “IT’S NOT EXACT TO THE MOVIE!” Personally, I love the twist on it and how it’s more of the Wild Things than it is of Max’s official costume. I also love how it gives you that feel of fur without the 400 prims that go into say a boa.

A final thing of note throughout all of these looks is the hair I’m wearing in 3 of the 4 of them. The over-the-eyes sort of wispy hair comes from CheerNo Destiny. To be honest, I felt like originally that a lot of his hairstyles were just way too editorial for me to even try to pull off. I don’t have that sort of bleeding edge fashion sense and that’s not really my style, but when I came across three new hairstyles from CheerNo I knew I had to pick them up after trying on the demos. The blacks set that I always get are pretty good, but to be honest the brown textures for his hair are pretty awesome.

That pretty much wraps up what I’ve got for this one. I have a few things from SL still to blog and then I plan on hitting up all of the Spring/Summer 2010 images and bringing you some of my favorite looks. Adios muchachos y te veo pronto.

I have been taking a stroll along the darker side of the street recently and it’s a very enjoyable place. Think; Stanley Kubrick’s Clockwork Orange, Tim Burton’s Edward Scissor Hands, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. For me the trick is creating the character and then the clothes and accessories compliment the over-all feel. Texture, proportion, silhouette and detail are the key factors you should be hunting for. I’ve had so many compliments from strangers while dressed like this, so have a look and give it a go. Find your dark side!

What have I always wanted in SL? A piano. That’s right. A big grand I can park my avatar at, at all times, to pretend I’m not wasting my time, and to avoid spending a whole lot. As I was cleaning out my inventory a little earlier, I found a dress that, I’m guessing, Clear passed to me and my first thought was “Regina Spektor!” It was very her, so I put it on, then I added some girly hair, since i, just last week, deleted the Torchsong Updo I had from the hair fair earlier this year, thinking I wouldn’t need it. (Gah, that would’ve been perfection!) Ran off to Unintended Water and… um, one thing led to another, and I did a shoot inspired by this video.

As usual, it has been forever since I last posted. I have a good excuse. I lost my blog. It’s complicated, and it will make you savvier bloggers laugh at me.

I’m still proofreading for Demand Studios. I enjoy it and hopes it lasts forever.

We went to the mountains a couple of weeks ago, and it was perfect. We went for the fall colors, but we ended up seeing a different color, white. It snowed. In North Carolina. In October. As a cold weather person, I was in heaven. The combination of the snow and leaves was great.

Lots of books and movies news. Vamp time. I’ve read the Twilight Series. I’ve read the Sookie Stackhouse series. Now I’m reading the Laurell Hamilton vampire series. Will the bloodsuckers stop haunting me?

To be read: a new Monk book, Georgia Nicolson book(fabbity fab in her UK speak), Uncle John Bathroom Book I got at a used book sale, and a Kathryn Lilley book where the heroine deals with weight issues.

DVD news. I broke down and got the first season of True Blood on DVD. I don’t usually get TV series on DVD, but I don’t have HBO, and I loved the books. The show is wild in a fun way. I also got Grease 2 in the Walmart bargain bin. Not as good as the original, but it has catchy songs. Let’s bowl, Let’s bowl. Let’s rock n roll.

To cap off my perfect mountain trip, I found Shag the movie. Thanks to Austin Powers, the word shag makes people giggle, but in South Carolina beach music, it means dancing. It came out 20 years ago, and it is about four girls going to Myrtle Beach in 1963. It has great music including the song Rock and Roll(It Will Stand) by Johnny O’Keefe I had forgotten about and was thrilled to rediscover. It was choreographed by Kenny Ortega who choreographed my favorite movie, Dirty Dancing.

Speaking of DD, it was sad when Patrick Swayze died. DD was a big influence in my teen years. An article about a Swayze Memorial in Lake Lure, NC brought back memories of how I, as an awestruck teen, went to the camp in Lake Lure where DD was filmed. I also went to Mountain Lake Resort in Virginia where DD was filmed. Time of My Life is a perfect title for Swayze’s autobiography which is on my library reserve list. RIP Patrick.

Another sad moment over the summer was when Guiding Light ended. It was also a big part of my life. Roger and Holly. Philip and Beth. Jonathan Randall. Soaps get a bad rap, but I have many happy memories of GL.

Now I’m getting ready for the Winter. We have a Xmas trip to Williamsburg, Va, and of course the holidays. Maybe we’ll see snow in Eastern NC, but at least I’ve seen the fall snow.

Shag Baby!!! Ok stay with me here…not that kind of shag. You have to love Shag art. It’s

Shag Baby!!!

Ok stay with me here…not that kind of shag.

You have to love Shag art. It’s simplicity, adult messages, human behavior interpretations, pure fun with the sexy, cool, wacky, representations that hits the canvas. Bright colors that shine with hip in your face emotion capture a moment that we either can relate to or wish we could relate to…their just shagadelic.

Bottoms Up
The art of Josh Agle express’ the art of consumption…the art of the seemingly sophisticated consumers exploiting life’s vices to the extreme with flare and sensual exuberance.

Yuppies gone wild in a beatnik kind of way. Retro. Hip. Polynesian. Hula. Vespa. Drinks. Party. Tiki. and always Mod…always with a flare of the 60’s…this is Shag. He makes Elvis and the Rat Pack hipper then they already are! Impossible you scream…but true.

Jo sh-ag le
For those of you that may not already know why Josh Agle is called Shag…his name comes from a play of his very own…Jo “shag” le

It’s his love of simplicity and color that grab you…his wit and joy of sharing humor…and his limitless approaches to tearing down cultures walls and letting us all peak into another life. Essentially giving us a material lifestyle that some want and some envy and at the same time poking fun at the wackiness of it all.

Ripe Vice
Sex, alcohol and mass consumption are common themes. Some pushing the movie ratings above PG13…but all in good taste. Adult friendly…adult themed…as one of his titled books so eloquently explains ‘Shag A to Z: A Children’s Book Unsuitable for Children’. Enough said.

Those Wacky Shriners
But let’s make sure we give kudos to our friend…he certainly knows how to support charity and children alike. Shag has teamed up with Shrine El Bekal a Southern California Shrine Temple to create a set of prints depicting a Shriner Parade to benefit the Shriner Hospitals for Children.

Throw in benefit prints like the Ennis House foundation and you can see how this artist gives back.

I found some great photos of Shag’s studio on www.guillontine.com that are worth a look.

Warhol Would Be Proud
If you think about the rise of Shag you certainly must be impressed. In a mere 12 years since his first gallery. Think about that…not bad. Perhaps he has just struck a chord with designers and art lovers alike. I think he is Warhol like…where he has jumped into the pop culutre of art. Like Andy’s recognition of icons…Shag has become a brand of his own. Not the easiest thing to do in this world.

Play Hard
With success comes a strong work ethic…Shag paints seven days a week. In an interview on modculture.com he said “I have a little notepad where I write ideas down. I seldom sketch ideas until I sit down to do a painting. Though family, friends, acquaintances and fans often suggest ideas to me, these ideas tend to be a little askew from my own perspective & I seldom end up painting things that others have suggested.”

So ride the tide Josh…get out your tiki paraphernalia and celebrate. You deserve it and we deserve your splendor. Keep up the incredible work…it brings great joy to many.

Here are a just a few of my favorites…let me know yours.

Good evening all, Well, the kid in me just has to say… one more sleep. That’s right

Good evening all,

Well, the kid in me just has to say… one more sleep.
That’s right… tomorrow evening, the wife and I will be flying to South Africa for a whistle-stop tour of the coastal cities. Not really, but hell… I think that it really is going to feel that way after a few days. On our list of places to go is Johannesburg (admittedly, only the customs queue, but if they are having a strike… as they have had the last FIVE times we have flown through… it FEELS like forever.), East London (where the bulk of the visit takes place) and a family road trip that will take in Knysna and some other places in the Eastern Cape. Lastly, we get to fly to Cape Town to hook up with our old roommate, his girlfriend (soon to be wife) and their sprog.

(You know we’re looking forward to seeing all the new additions to the Bear Family Squire.)

So, things have been a little busy, what with the list of jobs and niggles that need to be squared away before our trip. There is some rule that even though we won’t physically be here, we still need to pay rent on the place. (Which sucks.) And the bills need to be paid whilst we’re away. All of our classes at school need to be prepared for while we are not here and some substitute teacher takes them. (Of course, this rule doesn’t apply to everyone, and I actually was left with a class for THREE days by a colleague.. and the bastard didn’t even leave me a fucking book. Thanks “bru”. Assbag.) Still, the wife and I are getting things set up so that there is a minimum of fuss for when we return.

Let’s see. In other news, I have now received the money for the sale of my bike, and all the paperwork has cleared too. As a result of selling my bike, I have been going about on Shank’s Pony for the last week. This isn’t all that bad, as it is a 4 block walk to the MRT (Subway) station from my place, and then just a one-stop ride to my destination station, and then literally door-to-door service from the MRT to my school by bus. The trick of course is simply to work your way through a bus timetable. In Chinese.
(Is it just me, or are bus timetables the world over deliberately obtuse? When I lived in Ireland, the bus timetables there would regularly confuse the crap out of me. And there is little worse than bouncing around in sub-zero temperatures waiting for a bus that is ALREADY late, and you’re not sure will be coming anyway.)
Of course, all of this public transport has given me the chance to get re-acquainted with my iPod. Yes yes, I am one of those “anti-social” people who ignore everyone else when they travel. I’d get defensive, but more than likely, I simply don’t want to talk to you.

I am most likely NOT going to be online very much while I am in South Africa. Let’s face it, the South African concept of “broadband” in the household is that black rubber band that holds the braai wood together.
Yeah yeah, all my South African friends are going to have something to say about that, but I am going to miss the 10Mb line I have here at home. (For which I am paying a princely R180 a month for. Uncapped.)
This means that you will be without these regular blog updates for a while. As a make-up for the desertion, I will upload some semi-decent holiday shots on the next blog back.

One last bit of personal news – Bunny and JebbX have made it to the three year mark. Congrats guys.

********

This week’s musical contribution comes from Carl Sagan and Steven Hawking.
Enjoy.

1. A computer error gave two women in America called Patricia the same social security number. When the two women were brought together in an office to rectify the blunder they discovered that they had both been born with the names Patricia Ann Campbell. Both of their fathers were called Robert Campbell. Their birthdays were on 13th March 1941. They had both married military men in the year 1959 (within eleven days of each other). They each had two children aged 19 and 21. They both had an interest in oil painting. Both had studied cosmetics. Both had worked as book-keepers.

2. In 1893, Henry Ziegland ended a relationship with his girlfriend. Tragically, his girlfriend took the news very badly, became distraught and took her own life. Her distressed brother blamed his sister’s death upon Henry, he went round to Henry’s house, saw him out in the garden and tried to shoot him. Luckily, the bullet only grazed Henry’s face and embedded itself in a nearby tree. In 1913, twenty years after this incident, Henry decided to use dynamite to uproot a tree in his garden. The explosion propelled the embedded bullet from the tree straight into Henry Ziegland’s head – killing him immediately.

3. On December 5th 1660, a ship sank in the straights of Dover – the only survivor was noted to be Hugh Williams. On 5th December 1767, another ship sank in the same waters – 127 lost their lives, the only survivor was noted to be Hugh Williams. On 8th August 1820, a picnic boat capsized on the Thames – there was one survivor – Hugh Williams. On 10th July 1940, a British trawler was destroyed by a German mine – only two men survived, one man and his nephew – they were both called Hugh Williams.

4. Mr McDonald was a farmer who lived in Canada – nothing extra-ordinary in that – until you learn that his postcode contained the letter sequence EIEIO.

5. In 1996, Paris police set out to investigate a late night, high speed car crash, both drivers had been killed instantly. Investigations revealed that the deceased were in fact man and wife. Police initially suspected some kind of murder or suicide pact but it became apparent that the pair had been separated for several months – neither could have known that the other would have been out driving that night – it was just a terrible coincidence.

6. Michael Dick had been travelling around the UK with his family to track down his daughter, Lisa – who he had lost contact with ten years earlier. After a long fruitless search, he approached the Suffolk Free Press, who agreed to help him by putting an appeal in their newspaper. Fortunately, his long lost daughter saw the appeal and the pair were reunited. The odd thing was, his daughter had been right behind him when the free paper took the photograph – shown in the photograph above. What are the chances of that!

7. A fifteen year old pupil at Argoed High School in North Wales was to sit his GCSE examinations in 1990. His name was James Bond – his examination paper reference was 007.

8. In 1965, at the age of four, Roger Lausier was swimming off a beach in Salem – he got into difficulties and was saved from drowning by a woman called Alice Blaise. In 1974, on the same beach, Roger was out on a raft when he pulled a drowning man from the water – amazingly, the man he saved was Alice Blaise’s husband.

9. British cavalry officer Major Summerford was fighting in the fields of Flanders in the last year of WW1, a flash of lightning knocked him off his horse and paralysed him from his waist down. He moved to Vancouver, Canada, six years later, whilst out fishing, Major Summerfield was struck by lightning again and the right side of his body became paralysed. After two years of recovery, it was a summer’s day and he was out in a local park, a summer storm blew up and Major Summerfield was struck by lightning again – permanently paralysing him. He died two years after this incident. However, four years after his death, his stone tomb was destroyed – it was struck by lightning!

10. Businessman Danie de Toit made a speech to an audience in South Africa – the topic of his speech was – watch out because death can strike you down at any time. At the end of his speech, he put a peppermint in his mouth, and choked to death on it!

It should be well established by now that I enjoy “different” things in SL. Jackets tied

It should be well established by now that I enjoy “different” things in SL. Jackets tied around waists, hoodies worn over one arm and with one arm out, shirts with cigarettes in their pockets and sweats with condoms and Wayferers in theirs. Now a few weeks back, Clear linked me to some jeans on Xstreet with four different ways to wear them. I wanted them, but at the time, I was budgeting myself (found out yesterday that visiting my co-blogger might be a more attainable goal than once thought!) to save up my lindens for cash out, and lost the link. It took a while to find, but this morning, after 1 1/2 hours of sleep, I was inspired. I needed these jeans. I needed to wear them around my ankles as I performed for the final time at Azriel’s Australian Art Retreat (as it had to close due to funding purposes ) so I searched for everything from “pants floor” to “jeans” and found the male version – aha, there it was. Then I realized they also had a female version, and that was that. I bought ‘em. Mine all mine.
