In 1953, the CIA and British Intelligence overthrew Mohammed Mossadegh, Iran’s first popularly elected leader. Even though, for the better part of the 20th century the US has been a strong advocate for the right of the people to elect a leader, we participated in a coup destroying that elementary right, for fear that the new government would favor the Russians. Instead of democracy, the Shah returned to power, bringing back the oppression and cruelty of before the original revolution. Since then, America has taken a hypocritical approach to foreign policy involving Iran, mostly in order to avoid an alliance between Iran and Russia. Yet now, Because Russia is so dependent upon Iran for their non-domestic oil, if NATO were to attack Iran, Russia would be dragged into the battle, emulating the Chinese involvement in the Korean War.

In 1975, National Geographic published an article about Iran expressing hope for its future, discussing Iran’s oil money and enginuitive spirit. Three years before the start of the Islamic Revolution, Iran was a rising tourist destination for Americans. But as violence began to erupt, eventually provoking the flee of the Shah, America became cold to Iran. Under Ahmedinejad, Iran began to pursue nuclear capabilities, and Bush became wary. America mildly threatened use of military power against Iran, but even then, they knew the consequences. Then, in June, Ahmedinejad and the Ayatollah, Iran’s supreme religious leader, rigged the election in Ahmedinejad’s favor. When the followers of Moussavi, the opposition candidate, began to protest, America stated that it didn’t care in order to preserve diplomacy, even though Moussavi is far more aligned with American ideals.

When Iran is involved, America is hypocritical and painstakingly cautious with everything we say and do. Why does Iran mean so much? Russia. As stated before, Russia is dependent upon Iran, and is therefore motivated to involve themselves in any military campaign of Iran’s, and a conflict with Russia could easily end in nuclear war. But is the delicacy paying off? Not really. The majority of Ahmedinejad supporters still have death-wishes for America, the Ayatollah still dislikes us, and the US friendly candidate lost by election fraud. Essentially, this two-faced, coded message isn’t working. It’s time to give Iran what everyone deserves: straight talk.

When trying to choose a supplemental screening, I chose Saturday Night Fever (Badman 1977). This particular film because I remember watching it with my mother as a child. I couldn’t for the life of me remember what the movies plot was but this didn’t hinder my ability to sing the opening song to myself. This was the first thing I recognized just as I started watching the film with my roommates. In a mini poll, I found that none of my roommates remembered the film however they did remember what songs were in it. I could help but think back to class when we discussed how much the soundtrack made a cultural impact. Aside from the famous soundtrack the movie itself was enjoyable. John Travolta plays the lead character Tony Manero, not only known for his awesome dance moves, he is also seen as a 70s badass. Despite his suave exterior his personal life was not so glamorous. He is depicted as a working class citizen, working for minimum wage and comes home to a dysfunctional yet loving home.

In the film I noticed how much dancing played in defining Travoltas character, showing the passionate side of his character. It’s a ritual established in the film, Travoltas character eats dinner with his family then heads out to the dance club with his pals. This family dinner definitely has loving overtones however the manner in which they show love is somewhat eccentric. This is clearly evident during the first family dinner when everyone begins hitting each other in the back of the head. Though their voices were raised it was all in fun. I enjoyed that the film highlighted the families culture, I feel that this was needed in order to understand the shallowness of Tony Moneros tough exterior. Of course we come to the spectacle of the entire movie, the dance club. Here Tony is a well known dancer as well as a ladies man, he keeps up his tough guy exterior by belittling the women who throw themselves at him. Without the family dinner scene, I would have felt his character would have been more of a jerk than that of a working class family man.

During his dance scenes is when I really began paying attention to camera angles relative to Tony. While he is dancing, the angle is always at a slightly lower level, this contrasts the eye level filming of the family dinners. In some way I see this as a sort of symbolism for Tonys character at these points. Eye level camera angles signal that his character is one of us, where as when the camera angle is lowered he controls the situation. This emphasizes the fact that Tony is more powerful and admired when he is out dancing, this control of life is what makes his character love dancing. He is obviously soothed by it at the times he was most stressed during the movie.

From a broader point of view, I can see how this movie had history changing aspects. The soundtrack was released and made more of an impact than the actual movie itself, it was a different take on how music can influence our lives. It reinforced a cultural change that was sweeping the nation, disco.

I never realized how talky Mister Peabody and Sherman cartoons were until now. Makes it easy to replace the original dialogue with dialogue of your own, if you’re a talented voice artist. I must have learned a lot of history from these cartoons.

comedonchisciotte.net MICHEL COLLON E GREGOIRE LALIEU INTERVISTANO MOHAMED HASSAN Dalla serie “Compr

comedonchisciotte.net

MICHEL COLLON E GREGOIRE LALIEU INTERVISTANO MOHAMED HASSAN

E’ falso.

Questo perché Ahmadinejad nega l’olocausto, no?

Come è cambiato l’Iran?

LAHORE

THE Lahore High Court has been informed that Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s case cannot be taken to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) without the consent of America and Afghanistan.

A deputy attorney general, appearing on behalf of the Interior Ministry, said this on Tuesday in reply to a petition, filed by Barrister Iqbal Jafferry, seeking the court’s directions for invoking jurisdiction of the ICJ for recovery of Dr Aafia from the US detention.

The petitioner’s lawyer insisted that there was no need to get the consent of the US or Afghanistan as there was a treaty which allowed Pakistan to move the ICJ on its own.

However, the court adjourned hearing till October 30 and asked the petitioner to file his written reply in this regard.

Dr Aafia was reportedly arrested from Karachi on March 30, 2003, from outside her house to be taken to Afghanistan.

Later, she was transported to the US, where she was being tried under terrorism charges for attempting to kill two American investigators.
