Dil Bole Hadippa was great. A girl who plays cricket like a man and Shahid Kapoor. He is my new Bollywood crush. Move over Salman Khan… this guy is awesome and very “jokey”…. It was a great film.

There is no denying that Priyanka Chopra is one of the busiest actresses around. After shooting non stop for Don 2, Agneepath, Teri Meri Kahani, Barfi, and Krrish 3 along with working on her music album, this vivacious beauty has finally decided to take a break.

PC has been working round the clock for many months now and so she decided to take it easy for a bit to recharge her for the year ahead. The actress was in Spain to work on her music album post which she decided to extend her time in Ibiza for a couple of days. Hope this short break gives her some much needed rest and relaxation.

Being an ardent Bollywood, Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra fan, and with the timing of its release, it’s obvious my first film review has to be of Teri Meri Kahaani. Where do I possibly start? Do I start with how badly the film kicks off or how it goes on to get progressively worse by the minute?

The story is about how two people meet, fall in love, are separated and come back together three times over three lifetimes. With the intention of highlighting the idea of soulmates and the role of how destiny brings them back together, the film transcends into three different eras: Lahore in 1910, Mumbai in 1960 and Stratford in 2012.

Teri Meri Kahaani begins in the era of 1960s Mumbai where Govind (Shahid Kapoor), an ordinary musician meets Rukhsar (Priyanka Chopra), a famous actress, in a train. Throw in some flying sparks and love at first sight Bollywood clichés and you’ve got yourself a love triangle with Radhika, played by Prachi Desai, falling for him as well. The two girls, who coincidently(?) happen to be friends find out about Govind and his promiscuous ways, cry their eyes out, and leave. The best part about this sequence is the silent scene, inspired by Charlie Chaplin, in which none of the characters voice out any of their cheesy dialogues, making 40 minutes into the film easier to bear.

Fast forward to 2012 in Stratford. This is by far, the most excruciatingly painful sequence any filmmaker could EVER put you through. The pretentiousness of how two obviously middle-aged people play college students that tweet and BBM each other makes you want to slit your wrists and hope to die. Clearly, Kunal Kohli paid full attention to detail when deciding what “elements” of the youth culture to express in the attempts to connect with his audience. The use of slang like ‘LOL’ and “OMG I LOL’ed” make you want to throw something (in my case, the remote) at the TV/laptop/whatever you’re using to watch this film for free because nobody in their right minds would and should spend a dime on it. What’s worse is that they send each other pictures of their lunch and crack up because A) that’s the normal thing to do and B) eating a burger is just so damn funny. So the story goes on, unfortunately, with Radha (Priyanka) finding out about Krish (Shahid)’s ex-girlfriend, Meera (Neha Sharma), whom he hasn’t really broken up with, who spams Facebook with embarrassing pictures of Krish, who by the way, is head over heels in love with Radha after spending a night out clubbing with her, after which she ends up leaving. Oh and all these embarrassing pictures are up on a screen in a bar they go to in the middle of the afternoon. Confused? Yeah, me too! They then part ways and it switches to Lahore in 1910.

This is probably the strangest, yet somehow the most bearable part of the entire film. It starts off with a character introduction to Shahid’s role as Jawed, a young, Pakistani lad who in the attempt to escape the cops, reaches Aradhana (Priyanka)’s house. Again, there’s the ‘love at first sight, but can’t do anything about it because you’re Hindu and I’m not’ drama, followed by random shayaris thrown in every now and then. It goes on to show rioting against the British Raj, in which Jawed backs out of in the fear of getting hurt and Aradhana looks at him as if he’s a spineless twat. More riots go on and Jawed once again, takes part in the hopes of winning Aradhana over. This is where it just gets better! Jawed goes to prison and Aradhana, like a doting girlfriend (how and when that happened, nobody knows), visits him, nurses him and feeds him…every day. Sweet? Special? No. All the prisoners have their wives, girlfriends or helpers doing the same for them like it’s no big deal. Uhhh, do they tell their parents they’re meeting a prisoner every day?
[Presumably, this is how the conversation would go:
Dad--Oh, kitthe ja rahi ho?
Aradhana--Bauji, jail jaa rahi hoon, qaidi se milne!]
This is followed by a song. In the prison. Where all the prisoners’ wounds have been magically healed and the girls join them in some fun song and dance because that’s apparently what everyone did in prison in the early 18th century. WHO KNEW? They cut to a few months later when Jawed is released and finds out that Aradhana’s married. I guess she forgot to give him the memo when she visited him everyday. Oops! He’s heartbroken, she’s heartbroken, he agrees to marry whichever girl his father chooses and she just decides to, well…settle. Fast forward to when Jawed is about to get married, Aradhana shows up in a white dress, (so apparently and suddenly, her husband died; talk about perfect timing!) and confesses her love to Jawed, who agrees to get married anyway.

If you aren’t confused enough, there’s more. It’s nearly two and a half hours in, so Kohli thinks it’s time to wrap everything up. Govind meets Aradhana on the train as she’s about to leave Mumbai (oh wow, back to where they started, how intelligent!). What happened to Radhika? Govind went to her place before meeting Aradhana, watched her cry from outside her window like a creep and then left. Very thoughtful. Krish makes a heart-warming speech in front of the entire college, apologizing to Meera and confessing his undying love for Radha, who I must repeat, he’s only known through sending her pictures of his burger. Have I mentioned the speech was all in Hindi yet all the English students knew when to ‘awww’ and clap when necessary? Anyway, they make up, Meera takes a picture of them and posts it on Facebook. Kahaani khatam? Ha! You wish. Just when Jawed is about to get married, he realises he doesn’t want to marry a random girl and wants to spend his life with Aradhana. He leaves the alter, runs after her and convinces his parents and her dad that he will keep her happy.

And then, Kahaani khatam.

Don’t get me wrong, not ALL of the film was bad. There were some good songs, which the audience relentlessly heard for 3 months prior to the film’s release and provided a good break to whatever the makers decided to call a story. And then there were the shayaris, which from watching Fanaa, we all know Kunal Kohli does a good job of writing. However, it was a bit overdone and reminded the audience too much of Rehan in Kohli’s former film, unbeatably played by Aamir Khan.

In short, Teri Meri Kahaani is a bad film. I’d rank it a 3 out of 10 at best, with the music by Sajid-Wajid being its saving grace. My advice to you, Kunal Kohli, is to stop making films. Post Fanaa, you can see why Yash Raj no longer wants to work with you and why Break Ke Baad was…well, let’s save that for another rainy day. Just take the hint.

With an attractive and powerful starcast like Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, whose chemistry and performances in Kaminey were unmatched, they both failed to deliver in this excuse for a film. Not even Priyanka’s stunning looks and Shahid’s cute smile could save it. Prachi Desai and Neha Sharma were a complete waste, to say the least. As for the music, you can just buy the CD; you don’t need to watch the film for that.

My theory is simple: if I’m texting, tweeting or on Facebook during a film, it obviously doesn’t have nor deserves my undivided attention. Teri Meri Kahaani was one such film, or whatever you’d like to call it.

As I sat through the painfully slow and making absolute zero sense, I just kept wondering why was I even surprised? After all, wasn’t Kohli the reason for a film like Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic, apparently inspired from Marry Poppins, which if you ask me is the biggest insult Julie Andrew would come across in her entire lifetime. If a man can make a cute children’s story like Marry Poppins a tragic melodrama crap, he will definitely give bullshit to a few unlucky ones like me with this film, which isn’t a remake. I mean, c’mon the poor guy obviously can’t make a good movie, read Fanaa and Hum Tum, if he doesn’t have one to copy.

And let me not even get started on the songs. I swear I would have lost faith in music altogether if I hadn’t walked before the end. The sheer number of songs was the biggest testimony Kohli could give, admitting to have made a film without a script. That had to be the reason, what else could it be to make us sit through story less sadism with no sign of let alone a great or even an average love story.

My biggest chagrin wasn’t Kohli, his in capabilities aren’t exactly a secret. What was upsetting was seeing competent actors like Shahid and Priyanka giving such shallow and superficial performances. And it isn’t hard to know that, everyone knows the calibre, Jab We Met and Kaminey weren’t that long ago. More than making a film, it was a reunion of past lovers where they decided to do a little song and dance number. Mausam, though a flop, I didn’t blame it on the actors, but this one, I am sorry. Its like the team is out there to prove that people are dimwit imbeciles and they can get away with any random crap put together in the name of cinema.

To sum it up, I just humbly request you to give this one a miss. Unless you are a masochist, in that case, you are definitely in for a treat!

Here’s my review of the movie Teri Meri Kahaani. This time I thought of reviewing each part of movie separately. My Rating – 2.5 star out of 5.

Main Cast

Shahid Kapoor : He is in his best looks so far. Girls will just go flat on him. He looks more mature in this movie as compared to his others. At sometimes he looks like SRK (when he was young). For his part of role he’s done nice job but as usual could not scrap of his image of chocolaty boy and could not fit himself at few places perfectly.

Priyanka Chopra : Obviously no need to mention, She looks damn hot as usual. Perfect expression and for her part she’s just perfect. Obviously she fits in every role.

Prachi Desai : She looks beautiful, I would rather say cute. In her 1960’s style costume and makeup she looks pretty, cute and glamorous. She has done a good job. Although her role was not so long she has made an impression that will make you find her in every other part of the story.

Neha Sharma : Her role being limited too but she couldn’t make impression as good as Prachi Desai and also her looks was good, not so appealing. And her acting also lacks that punch to hold you.

Story

Well story was not so impressive. The story covers love stories of three different times. One is 1960’s, the other is 2012’s and the last is 1910’s. Yes, the sequence is right they have shown it this way only. Well the storyline for 1960’s could be more dramatic and enjoyable, reminds me of Laurel and Hardy but was limited somehow to cover the main part of the story. Two best friends, one successful other not, both fell in love with same guy and tragedy. The 2012’s part is well we all know. Girl and Boy meet, have a fight, one of them realizes, starts chatting, a bit of social networking and fall in love and which later turns socially NOT-working. And the 1910’s part instead of being a black and white kind of story is more like a today’s movie. Sets have been designed nicely but not so convincing. Story is predictable. Boy not good (“aawara type”), girl’s father fighting for freedom and father’s choice dominating girls wishes and again a problem. At the end all the matter’s get cleared the love stories have a happy ending. Mostly predictable and not a very innovative story just few chunks from here and there to make a bigger picture.

Music

Music is good. I don’t have much knowledge of music but it goes well with the theme especially the 1960’s part. Songs are nice. Lyrics by Prasoon Joshi and music by Sajid-Wajid have done a fair work to add entertainment.

Direction

Kunal Kohli as a director is not so successful. His movies lack that strength to hold audience to their seats. Although there are many other factors that make film a success or a loss but director plays most important role to control every other factor. Teri Meri  Kahaani lacked the perfection in directing 1960’s story as in Sherlock Holmes . The rest was the easier part. Although the story was not unique but the direction could have made it more interesting.

Overall, Teri meri Kahaani is an average movie. If you have no better option to watch you can opt for this movie. A good time pass as one of my friend compliment it. Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra lovers will enjoy watching their crushes as their looks is what is the best part of the movie I would say.

Comparing the way society deals with relationships in the present and the past in film may seem a relatively simple concept to execute but in reality, is fraught with hidden danger, not only trying to satisfy an audience with a range of viewpoints but also what the film itself is trying to say. And therein lies my problem with Teri Meri Kahaani (TMK)- when the end credits rolled and we were shown Kohli’s utopian 1960′s Bombay filmed against a green screen (which is glaringly obvious in the final print so why explain it at the end? Oh that’s right, what does the viewer know about anything? Silly me.), I had no idea what TMK had to say on the subject – were love and relationships easier in 1910 or 1960? Or are we better off in a technology dominated 2012?

It is almost as if TMK is afraid to offer its opinion which is where the whole film falls apart as if the film has nothing to say, why watch it? The  film’s greatest strength and most interesting strand is the story of Krish and Radha in England in 2012. It is clearly evident that Kohli knows these characters inside out and has a take on modern relationships that is entertaining and most importantly unique. Furthermore, for me at least, this is the part of the film that absorbed me the most, with witty dialogue, good use of technology and peppy music. If TMK as a whole had been framed around 2012 or had given us more 2012, we would have had a better and stronger film here.

The biggest crime is the waste of chemistry between Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Quite simply, the two sizzle on screen and faithfully perform as directed. Yet at times, I was in disbelief that these were the two actors who did such a stellar job in Kaminey, as they are not even at 40% capacity here. To be fair, I thought Priyanka was better than Shahid who desperately needs to change things up in my opinion – TMK is commercial Shahid all the way (wrinkling his nose, delivering dialogue in a sing-song voice and body rolling) whilst the Shahid the actor is kept firmly off set, nowhere to be seen. Priyanka is very good in the 1910 segment showing spirit and strength. As Radha in 2012, it is evident that Priyanka understands the character and really does get into the swing of things. I was also impressed by Prachi Desai who I felt had played a similar role in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai (yes,that was a different era, I know, calm down) but pitched her role correctly so that we do feel sorry for her and want to know what happens to her after the film ends.

It is a real shame that TMK gets itself into a muddle – a film like Love Aaj Kal covered the same ground in way that was far more eloquent than TMK and made the connection to the present day crystal clear. It is not as if Kohli doesn’t know how to do this – Hum Tum has so many thematic similarities with TMK  that had TMK been a Hum Tum for today’s generation (which is what I felt the 2012 part could have been), TMK would have realised its premise fully. I also felt presenting 1910 and 1960 in the most cliched way did not help – if anything, I was more annoyed than amused by the wastage. TMK really is one to watch on DVD or telecast – ignore the 1960′s, watch 2012 and the songs and then wonder at what this film could have been – a story for me and you…

Last Friday saw the release of two anticipated films. Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani and Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur.  Both the films opened below the mark considering their economics, but it was GoW, which sustained and TMK burned.

Teri Meri Kahaani opened on a dull note across the country and collections didn’t rise much over Saturday or Sunday. The word of mouth for the film was very poor and monday onwards the film was in a state of freefall.

The film found very little appreciation among its target audience and collections for the week closed at a dismal Rs23.8cr. It’s a big disappointment for Shahid Kapoor, whose last release Mausam (also backed by Eros) was a complete washout. This time around, Eros sold the movie to Ponty chaddha for Rs 55cr (theatrical + satellite). Eros is safe, but Mr Chaddha will lose a packet on this venture. If my sources are to be believed the loss could be in the tune of Rs15cr-Rs18cr. It would be safe to assume that the film is a disaster.

Gangs of Wasseypur also opened to dull response across the country on Friday. Collections though picked up appreciably on Saturday and Sunday, but the way the film sustained on the weekdays sets it up nicely for a healthy box-office haul.

Word of mouth for GoW has been terrific. Its main target audience, the urban youth (male) has patronised the film in a big way. I expect Wasseypur to perform well in the coming weeks as the word of mouth will ensure that it has long legs at the box-office. Although, the masses and family audiences are staying away from it, but this segment of the audiences will drive it to box-office glory. It has collected Rs 17cr in its 1^st week, making GoW, Anurag Kashyap’s highest grossing film ever.

Wasseypur cost the producers Rs 19cr to make (both the parts). So, the cost of part one is approximately Rs 9.5cr add Rs 6cr P&A, hence the landing cost becomes Rs 15.5cr. The producers have recovered close to 6cr from ancillary rights. That leaves Rs 9.5cr to be recovered from theatres and that amount has been nearly recovered in the 1^st week. By the end of the 2^nd weekend, GoW would be in profits and set the stage nicely for GoW II.

Last week’s holdover, Ferrari Ki Sawaari, surprised many and added another Rs7cr to its kitty. The film has collected Rs27cr over it 2 week run. A very healthy total considering the lukewarm opening the film got. Rowdy Rathore, continues to collect and added another Rs5.5cr over the week. Its mammoth total stands at Rs 135cr. What makes this total so amazing is the fact that this has been achieved without a single holiday and the film has faced competition every week.

This week will see the release of The Amazing Spiderman and Maximum. Sony is very upbeat about the product and is releasing the film in more than 1000 screens across India. This is the widest release ever for a Hollywood film. The reviews have been glowing and I won’t be surprised if the web slinger posts the biggest opening weekend ever for a Hollywood film.
