Finding stocks with beneficial yields can be difficult. Stocks with yields more then 5% can be even more difficult. If you are looking to broaden your horizons into some oil service stocks, these would be great stocks to consider. No, they might not be as exciting and exploration and production oil stocks, but they could really add to your portfolio. Dr. Osman Gulseven has found these 5 great stocks with appealing yield percentages.

El Paso Pipeline Partners (EPB): El Paso is planning to split its subsidiary El Paso Exploration & Production (EPEP) by the end of 2011. As of Friday’s close, the Houston-based El Paso had a $6.7 billion market cap. P/E ratio is 13.0, and forward P/E is 15.07. The company had an EPS growth of 23.14% during the last five years. With a profit margin of 27.4% and a dividend yield of 5.26%, El Paso is an excellent stock to pick.

Magellan Midstream Partners (MMP): Magellan recently said that one of its docks in Louisiana has been reopened. The Oklahoma-based company, as of the July 1 close, had a market cap of $6.79 billion, and a P/E ratio of 19.76. Forward P/E ratio is 17. Earnings increased by 28.38% this year. Dividend yield in 2010 was 5.11%, whereas the company’s profit margin was 20.18%.

Although earnings decreased by 8.03% this year, analysts expect the company to enjoy 13.54% EPS growth for the next year. With a dividend yield of 6.61%, and a profit margin of 5.28%, NuStar is a decent pick for anyone looking to make some serious income.

Found some more undervalued energy stocks, which have been periodically appearing in our posts. Good stock picks and they are undervalued? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Bret Jenson has put together the important details about investing in these undervalued stocks.

Hess Corporation (HES) – Hess Corporation and its subsidiaries operate as an integrated energy company. It operates in two segments, Exploration and Production (E&P) and Marketing and Refining (M&R). The E&P segment explores for, develops, produces, purchases, transports, and sells crude oil and natural gas. This segment engages in exploration and production activities principally in Algeria, Australia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Colombia, Denmark, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Indonesia, Libya, Malaysia, Norway, Peru, Russia, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Patterson-UTI Energy (PTEN) – Patterson-UTI Energy, Inc., through it subsidiaries, provides onshore contract drilling services to oil and natural gas operators. The company offers pressure pumping services that consist of well stimulation and cementing for completion of new wells and remedial work on existing wells in Texas and the Appalachian Basin; and contract drilling services primarily in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and western Canada. It also owns and invests in oil and natural gas assets located primarily in Texas and New Mexico.

World Fuel Services (INT) - World Fuel Services Corporation engages in the marketing and sale of marine, aviation, and land fuel products and related services worldwide. Its Marine segment markets fuel and related services to international container and tanker fleets, commercial cruise lines, and time-charter operators, as well as to the United States and foreign governments. The company’s Aviation segment markets fuel and related services to commercial airlines, second and third-tier airlines, cargo carriers, regional and low cost carriers, corporate fleets, fractional operators, private aircraft, military fleets, and to the United States and foreign governments.

Each of these stocks are at a point where they are ready for a jump. Because they are undervalued, this is your opportunity to buy in and benefit from their next jump. Additional due diligence would be helpful in ensuring that one of these stocks would be a good fit for your portfolio. Either way, keep an eye on these guys.

British Petroleum and Apache Corp are the two most popular energy stocks among hedge fund managers. There were 41 hedge funds holding each stock at the end of March and the total value of hedge fund holdings was around $1.8 billion. Boone Pickens is bullish about both companies. He initiated his APA position during the first quarter and he also boosted his stake in BP by 18%. Bill Miller, Eric Mindich and David Einhorn are among BP’s invetors (See Einhorn’s top stock picks).

Chesapeake Energy (CHK) was Boone Pickens’ largest position at the end of March. Other hedge funds were also very bullish about CHK, investing more than $3.4 billion in the company. Mason Hawkins, Israel Englander and Carl Icahn are among the CHK investors (Check out Icahn’s favorite stocks here).

Occidental Petroleum is another stock with tremendous hedge fund interest. Boone Pickens increased his bets on OXY by 65% during the first quarter.
The U.S. has been talking about energy independence for some time now. If we want energy independence, where is all this oil going to come from? Well, there are 5 states that produce the most oil in the country. I am sure you could guess a few, but a few my surprise you as well. Eric Fox gives us all the details.

1. Texas
It’s no surprise that Texas is the largest domestic producer of oil as this state has had a culture associated with the oil business for more than century. Many historians trace the beginning of the modern oil era to the famous Spindletop well drilled near Beaumont, Texas in 1901. The well blew out and reportedly produced 100,000 barrels of oil per day until it was brought under control nine days later.

2. Alaska
Alaska is the second-largest oil producer of crude oil with average daily production of 670,553 barrels in February 2011 (includes natural gas liquids). The state was a relatively minor source of domestic production of crude oil until the discovery of oil in the North Slope in the 1970s. Production from the Prudhoe Bay field and other fields began in 1977 and at one point comprised 25% of all U.S. oil production.

3. California
Some might find it odd that California is the third largest producer of crude oil in the United States, as this state has a reputation as ground zero for the environmental movement.

Things were much different in the middle of the 19th century, as the oil industry in California began with operators building tunnels or pits to get at the oil, much of which seeped to the surface. The first successful oil wells were drilled in the 1860s and the industry hasn’t stopped since.

4. North Dakota
North Dakota has the honor of being the fastest-growing state oil producer over the last few years, as it has seen oil production increase from less than 100,000 barrels per day in 2005 to the 348,367 barrels per day reported in February 2011.

5. New Mexico
New Mexico is the fifth-largest domestic oil producer with average daily production of 177,815 barrels per day in 2010. The state is a relative newcomer to the business compared to other top producers, with the first successful commercial oil well drilled in 1924.

With these five states producing as much oil as they do, we are well on our way to being self sufficient. It will be interesting to see if these ranking maintain their status, or if other will jump ahead.

The Gulf of Mexico has been a taboo topic when it comes to offshore drilling. After the BP disaster, the Gulf has had a pretty negative connotation attached to it, and often companies and investors are steering clear of it. However, one company is braving the heat and continuing shallow water drilling in the Gulf. That company is Hercules Offshore Inc. Let’s get the whole story from Daniel Gilbert.

…But where some of its rivals see depleted oil and gas reserves, Hercules says it sees opportunity. Drilling in the area has been declining for the past decade, but Hercules is banking on its greater scale to reduce costs and stimulate more customer demand from its clients, such as Chevron Corp.

Even before the Seahawk rig purchase, Hercules said it had reduced operating costs by more than 40% between the third quarter of 2008 and the end of 2010, and trimmed its debt by nearly $300 million over the same period.

“We believe in the Gulf of Mexico long term,” Jim Noe, a senior vice president and the company’s general counsel, said in a recent interview.

Not everyone is bullish about the shallow-water Gulf’s prospects. Loretta Cross, managing partner at Grant Thornton LLP’s corporate advisory and restructuring unit, said she believes drilling activity in the shallow-water Gulf has further to fall.

Hercules concedes that its best growth opportunities lie in international waters, where the fees are higher and the contracts are longer. And more than half of the company’s revenue has come from international operations in the past few years, according to Mr. Noe. But it is holding onto its hopes for the Gulf.

Hercules’ revenue, which two years ago was more than $1.1 billion, last year shrank to $657.5 million. It ended 2010 with a $134.6 million loss.

The company’s recent results apparently annoyed many shareholders upset over the company’s executive-compensation practices.

On May 16, Hercules disclosed in a regulatory filing that a majority of shareholders voted against the company’s executive compensation plan for 2010, a rare event that has happened at fewer than 2% of more than 1,300 companies this year that have held votes, according to the advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services.

The nonbinding vote came after ISS and Glass Lewis, another advisory firm, criticized Hercules for a gap between pay and performance. Hercules executives received $3.8 million in incentive and retention bonuses last year, more than four times the value of the previous year’s bonuses.

Mr. Noe, the second-most highly paid executive after chief executive John Rynd, said the company would “evaluate and respect the vote that was cast.” But he defended the pay practices and said performance was affected by circumstances the company couldn’t control: the economic recession; the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig that prompted a temporary drilling moratorium by the Interior Department; the glut of natural gas that has pushed prices down and hurt demand for the company’s drilling services. Most of what is produced in shallow waters is gas…

Hercules Offshore is putting a lot of energy into the Gulf, which can either pay off, or greatly hurt them. Of coarse they have their hands in other locations across the globe, but having a strong focus on the Gulf could be risky. Will this risk pay off?

President Obama’s hometown of Chicago is nearly 1,000 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. But like many other communities across the country, it is suffering the consequences of his Administration’s anti-drilling agenda.

Illinois accounted for $376.2 million in shallow-water drilling expenditures over the past three years, according to an analysis by 14 oil and gas companies that spend money on vendors and subcontractors. The bulk of that money—$242.2 million—was spent in the Chicago district represented by Representative Danny Davis (D–IL).

It’s fresh evidence that Obama’s anti-drilling agenda is having a ripple effect across America since last year’s oil spill, claiming jobs not just in Louisiana and Texas but also in communities far removed from the shipyards in the Gulf of Mexico.

The study from the Shallow Water Energy Security Coalition paints a picture of the nationwide economic ramifications. Obama can’t even be blamed for playing politics. Five of the states that benefit most from shallow-water drilling backed him as a candidate in 2008. And Democrats represent many of the congressional districts that stand to lose millions.

The cost in jobs is startling. A new analysis by Louisiana State University professor Joseph Mason projects national job losses at 19,000 from the drilling moratorium, with wage losses at $1.1 billion. About one-third of those jobs are located outside the Gulf region.

Nearly a year after imposing his anti-drilling agenda, it’s quite clear that Obama is carrying out misguided policies causing widespread harm.

And job losses aren’t the only consequence. The Obama Administration’s deliberate delay in issuing permits for both deepwater and shallow-water drilling has led to a sharp decline in oil production for the Gulf of Mexico this year. The U.S. Energy Information Administration puts the figure at 240,000 fewer barrels every day.

With gas prices hovering around $3.56 per gallon nationwide, now is not the time to lower production. The only way to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil is to produce more of it here at home.

The recent approval of new drilling permits for the Gulf of Mexico is a welcome and long overdue move by the Administration, but it’s nothing to celebrate. The pace of permitting is far below the historical average, and there’s no indication that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEMRE) has any desire to return production to a pre-spill level.

Until that happens, expect more grim news like the unfortunate circumstances facing Seahawk Drilling, which was forced to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a direct result of the bureaucratic delays at BOEMRE. Seahawk’s president and chief executive Randy Stilley, writing in The Washington Post, painted a dire picture:

The government’s drastic slowdown in the issuance of permits for shallow-water drilling operations—in which companies work in familiar geological formations, typically in less than 500 feet of water, mostly seeking to produce natural gas—has all but crippled the industry. The survivors (for now) like Hercules are staying afloat largely thanks to revenue from operations outside U.S. waters. Put another way, a once-proud industry born in the gulf during the Truman administration can no longer survive on operations in its own back yard.

Unless things change soon, Seahawk Drilling won’t be alone. Businesses located in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, California, and New York—top recipients of shallow-water drilling spending—will all face economic consequences as well.

It’s time for lawmakers to take notice. Representative John Sullivan (R–OK), who represents a district with $87.2 million in shallow-water expenditures over the past three years, recognizes the impact. He told us: “Continuing to keep American sources of energy under lock and key by failing to issue drilling permits only serves to place American jobs at risk, drives up costs at the pump and deepens our dependence on foreign oil.”

Things don’t have to be this way. The House of Representatives must continue to conduct rigorous oversight of the Obama Administration, challenging the Administration’s excuses and applying pressure when necessary. America’s energy future depends on it.

I will again be keeping it short this evening as I am still having a bit of trouble typing at my usual rate of speed. I have thus far determined that they wrist is not broken. Instead it must be something in the joint or tendons or something. It can hold weight just fine, I just cannot turn the wrist or move it quickly without pain. I also have the big event this week at work: The release of a new product that will revolutionize the industry yet again. Very exciting times, and very busy times as I have all the bigwigs at my location for launch on Thursday. So tonight I will be adding only two articles to start and hoping to add more as the day goes on tomorrow (although I cannot promise). As always, feel free to add any topics that you want to discuss. It’s all fair game….

Shallow water drillers tell CNN that President Obama’s deep water oil drilling ban has become a stealth ban on all Gulf drilling forcing hundreds of layoffs with many more on the way. Of course this part of Obama’s energy tax bill. Obama said he wanted to kill the coal industry and it looks like he wants to kill American oil production as well.

CNNMoney.com reports:

The offshore drilling ban imposed after the BP disaster is only supposed to hit operations in deep water — 500 feet or more.

But drillers in shallow water say they haven’t been issued permits since the April 20 explosion. The delay has already forced hundreds of layoffs, and many more could be on the way.

“I’m almost out of business over here,” said Paul Butler, president of Spartan Offshore, a small drilling company in Metairie, La.

Butler said that only one of his four drill rigs are operating; all four were drilling before the spill. Spartan has six contracts that would put his entire fleet back to work, but he can’t get going until the permits come through, he added.

The week before last, Butler said he had to lay off 72 employees. Come Tuesday he’ll have to let another 140 go.

Why are these shallow water drillers being effected when Obama only banned deep water drilling?

“The Department of Interior isn’t issuing permits,” said Jim Noe, a Hercules executive. “By mid July all of our rigs will be on the beach, and the workers without a job.”

Not issuing permits? Didn’t a federal judge strike down Obama’s moratorium? This just shows the corruption that is the Obama administration. Obama doesn’t care about the effect his baseless moratorium has had on Americans who work on this rigs, nor does he care about the skyrocketing cost of all American’s energy bills should his cap-and-trade energy tax pass.

Typical Obama doing whatever he can to push his agenda. To hell with American jobs and the companies that employ them. Not to mention that Obama is breaking the law by continuing the moratorium.
