Actor Shane West was so drunk after spending at a club in Los Angeles where Katy Perry performed, that he fell and cut his face.

The 31 year old star had great fun in a club in Los Angeles with his girlfriend and several other friends. But Shane apparently drank too much, lost his balance, fell and cut himself in the face. Besides the bad cut on his face, he also got a few bruises on various parts of the body.

The actor left the club immediately after the incident to treat his wounds and to escape, perhaps, the paparazzi’s flashes.

The Lodger, starring Alfred Molina, Hope Davis, Shane West and Simon Baker Detective Chandler

The Lodger, starring Alfred Molina, Hope Davis, Shane West and Simon Baker

Detective Chandler Manning (Molina) and his rookie partner Street Wilkenson (Shane West) have stumbled upon a disturbing case: brutal murders of hookers, which resemble the crimes of the infamous Jack the Ripper and also a serial killer who Manning caught behind bars and was executed years ago.

Married couple Ellen (Hope Davis) and Bunting (Donal Logue) are having financial troubles. Their marriage doesn’t also seem that solid either: Their relationship is strained and the husband constantly refers to the medication Ellen should be taking. We are tipped- at the very beginning of the movie- that Ellen may not be mentally very stable and that she doesn’t like her husband spending so much time away from home, especially at night.

Manning’s private life isn’t that great either. He has a wife staying at a mental hospital, after an attempted suicide and his daughter holds him responsible. She believes that his compulsiveness and possessive actions have caused this.

Ellen’s life, on the other hand, seems to get interesting. Their guest house finally gets rented, by a mysterious stranger (Simon Baker). Now this guy is dark, he keeps to himself and is obsessed with his privacy. He refuses to meet her husband and keeps disappearing at night…

The movie has a lot of suspicious characters so we are never sure to trust Manning, Ellen, her husband and especially not the lodger. Now the movie is a remake and is not boring. It has its moments and Manning’s obsession with Jack The Ripper gives the movie edge. However the twists and turns and the camera work don’t amount too much when some things are too obvious. It is an OK movie with some wasted potential. After all, the movie has wonderful actors. Hope Davis is wonderful as the edgy Ellen who is very attracted to her new lodger. I have always enjoyed watching Molina since he portrayed the uptight mayor in Lasse Hallstrom’s Chocolat in 2000. Simon Baker has always pleasantly surprised me with the wide arrange of roles he has taken and this is by far the darkest. Shane West makes a good rookie. But as I said, it has wasted potential. It doesn’t add anything new to the guess-who-is-the-killer game. It is worth a watch if you like the actors. Frankly, the poster looks good and it is cooler than the movie. I actually half-expected a story with vampires when I first saw it.

Echelon Conspiracy may be a little rough around the edges, but the fighting sequences were very impressive and the main story was quite interesting.

My rating

If you have never heard of Echelon Conspiracy is probably because it was only released for one week in about 400 theaters in late February 2009. The movie only made about $500,000 in the US, it actually made more money abroad where it was released for longer than a week. Believe it or not, that happens a lot with American movies.

Echelon Conspiracy is the story of a young network administrator who unexpectedly receives a cell phone by mail then soon after begins receiving strange text messages instructing him to do seemingly random things. The text messages would advise him on when stock prices would go up, when computerized slot machines would pay out and it would even tell him when to bet big during a blackjack game.

The story revolves around an investigation on trying to find out who is sending the messages. However, when the FBI learns that the messages are coming from Langley the investigation is halted. Instead they begin a different investigation to find out who has broken into Echelon, the NSA’s communication computer. The story becomes a pretty decent action adventure after the kid is finally caught. Although not perfect, the director does a good job at keeping you guessing who the good guys and the bad guys are.

The producers of this movie do an okay job at keeping the suspense through out the movie, however the acting is very week and that leads to a lot of confusion during the film. Regardless, the story is quite entertaining. I am not sure how plausible it is, but who cares, it’s a movie. While this movie wasn’t as good as Eagle Eye or Enemy of the State, it did borrow some elements from both, however they managed to keep it fresh and not appear to have been stolen.

The movie features some pretty cool fighting scenes, some of the best fighting scenes I have seen since the Bourne series. There were some decent car chases and some very cool plot twists. In all it’s not a bad film.

The film does feel a little amateurish, I am not convinced it wasn’t, but that is fine. Greg Marcks, the director of this film only has two other films under his belt. In my opinion Greg is still learning the ropes, however, I do see a good future for him.

You might find it odd that I am writing about Shane West and David Bowie in the same post. Their fame levels and target audience might seem different but they fit the criteria of the post and I guess there can be people who know and like them both, since I’m one of them.

DAVID BOWIE

David Bowie during his Space Oddity days

David Bowie is a cult musician. His songs are featured in over 200 films. His first album was released in 1967 so it is safe to say he has been around for over 4 decades now. His music is influential and his songs have been sung by other artists, such as Nirvana. Given Nirvana is probably the most popular grunge band and Bowie’s unique rock/pop sound has influenced them also, it becomes quite clear he is a universal idol. Do I like all his songs? No. They are all so different from each other. But there is a Bowie song to be found to suit all your moods and a Bowie picture to fit any kind of fashion statement; from contemporary to glam and flamboyant. But Bowie’s artistic talent is not limited to singing and song writing. He has also appeared in many films. I last saw him in the 2006 movie The Prestige, playing the role of Nikola Tesla. He has also appeared in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), The Hunger (1983), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Basquiat (1996); in addition to many other film and TV appearances. He has even played Andy Warhol, the leading man of the pop art movement. Sure, his acting might be critically praised but his name will probably never be mentioned as one of the most influential actors. But to this day, he remains as a musical icon. Below is The Hunger movie poster.

SHANE WEST

Shane West as Landon in A Walk to Remember

Shane West is a young and promising actor. He is singing and playing the guitar for the band Jonny Was. Now, Shane isn’t insanely famous neither as a musician nor an actor, but he is building a strong movie resume bit by bit. He is only 31, and he has a bit of a baby face that gives him the advantage to play younger parts if he wants to. He totally passed for a high schooler in A Walk to Remember, at the age of 24. He has gotten to play Tom Sawyer alongside Sean Connery in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and he has scored one of the major roles in the long-running hospital drama ER. He has played in Echelon Conspiracy – an action movie that has quite a clever script, which is not so easy to find nowadays. This year he has starred in The Lodger, a high-paced thriller. So he has proved that he can undertake many different characters, and not just a romantic sweetheart, like he did in A Walk to Remember. Shane has a long way to go as an actor but things have been promising so far.

As for his band, I am not sure how many of his fans are just from the music scene only. I really enjoyed A Walk to Remember, an adaption of the best-selling Nicholas Sparks novel. The movie’s soundtrack was quite good, despite some of the songs were sung by Mandy Moore. Which reminds me she does act and sing, but her music is too standard pop for my taste. This soundtrack, however also contains a song by Shane’s band, known as Average Jo back then. It is modern rock with some punk energy in it and it is fun. Nothing you haven’t heard of before but it is the stuff I’d like to hear when I’m out with my friends and just want to dance and have a good time. And Shane’s movies are good for pure entertainment.

Some people are multi-talented and well, it’s annoying. While us the normal folks struggle our way through a karaoke song, they can act and SING (and/or make music). I mentioned Jon Bon Jovi, Kevin Bacon and Keanu Reeves in my previous post. Now it’s time to talk about John Travolta and Bruce Willis.

BRUCE WILLIS

Bruce Willis as his possibly most popular character to date- John McClane in Die Hard

Maybe I shouldn’t write much about his acting skills and how popular his movies are. I should just name a couple of his movies. Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, 12 Monkeys, The Sixth Sense, The Whole Nine Yards. But to top all that, he can sing. He seriously has a really cool rocknroll voice. He can also play the harmonica. Back when Jon Bon Jovi was doing his solo album Destination anywhere in 1997, he shot a short film in which Demi Moore starred. Back then Demi and Bruce were still married and Jon became good friends with them both. So we know that Jon can sing, play the guitar and the piano. Bruce can sing and play the harmonica. Jon always talks about what a blast they had singing and playing all the time. Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Willis partying together…That’s sight I wish I could see. He is so much fun. Oh, I almost forgot. His nickname is Bruno. And here is a song from him:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKtt5oeKa8w

JOHN TRAVOLTA

Now with John, things are a bit more complicated. He made it big in movies with Saturday Night Fever, where he showed all his disco dancing skills. Then he played in Grease, which became even a bigger hit. And we already knew h was a talented singer and a dancer. Of course when you play in such big hits consecutively when you are 23 and 24, your later movies aren’t likely to be just as successful. But he did manage to make two comebacks. One with Look Who’s Talking in the late 80s and one with Pulp Fiction in 1994. Acting always came first for him but since his most popular movie has him singing, people don’t have trouble taking him seriously as a singer. I mention Grease as his most popular flick, because it is what put on the map, the DVDs still sell 31 years later and it has been known my generations. Bu t I like his bad guy roles even more. I know it is a weird way to compliment someone but I mean it affectionately: he makes a wonderful psycho. Broken Arrow, anyone? Half of Face Off?

Remember a time when John was young and skinny?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHFbhhi_XVc

After getting excited yesterday about “Dear John” and realising how much I love Nicholas

After getting excited yesterday about “Dear John” and realising how much I love Nicholas Sparks Novel’s which have been turned into movies, I decided to look a bit closer into them. Not only is “Dear John” coming out next year, another based on one of his novels is “The Last Song” (2010) which I cannot believe I forgot about as Miley Cyrus is going to be starring in it. At the moment Nicholas Sparks has 14 Novels, 6 of these are now movies. With two of them due for release next year. The other four which have been released are “Message in a Bottle” (1999), “A Walk to Remember” (2002), “The Notebook” (2004) and “Nights in Rodanthe” (2008). The tagline’s for each of the movies help to show which type of story is the main key in the movie, and the pictures below show that too . . . Love . . . all about love.

Taglines

The Notebook – Behind every great love, is a great story

Message in a Bottle – A story of love lost and found

A Walk to Remember – She didn’t belong. She was misunderstood. And she would change him forever.

Nights in Rodanthe – It’s never too late for a second chance

Dear John – Is Duty enough reason to live a lie ?

The Last Song- Do you ever really forget your first heartbreak?

Lets start things off by looking into the two movies which are due for release next year. Starting with “The Last Song” (2010), it is a coming of age drama which focuses on a troubled teenager (Miley Cyrus) and her relationship with her estranged father (Greg Kinnear) and how they reconnect to each other through music. Nicholas Sparks wrote both the screenplay and novel at the same time, and actually finished the screenplay before the novel. It has already been stated that the main hope for Miley for this movie is to introduce her to an older audience and start to move away from her children’s image. I for one really hope that she can do this, if you have read my blog before you should know that I am a big fan of Miley.

The next movie due for release next year is “Dear John” (2010) which you may have seen the poster and trailer posted on my blog yesterday (if not go check them out). The main plot to this is that a solider (Channing Tatum) falls in love with a college student (Amanda Seyfried) while he is home on leave. Not much else has been released for information on this film, I was thinking I should maybe make the effort to read the book before it comes out. Anyone read the book already?

“Nights in Rodanthe” (2008) is a movie I went to the cinema to see with my mam. We both knew that it was going to be sad as Nicholas Sparks novels/films seem to go in the direction and have a pretty tragic ending. While watching (or reading) you are just not entirely sure in which direction this is going to go. We both just love Richard Gere so that was another draw to going to see this movie. This love story happens in a beach house, over a weekend. A fantastic weekend, but is that the only time they will get to spend together?

“The Notebook” (2004) is the only one of these movies which I read the book of before watching it. I thought it was such a good adaptation from page to screen. The story of Noah (Ryan Gosling) and Allie (Rachel McAdams) being told from a book by Duke (James Garner) which makes the story so much more difficult to watch when you realise that Duke is in fact Noah, and trying to make Allie remember their life together as she has Alzheimer’s. Hence not knowing who Duke is, and thinking parts of the “story” sound familiar. It was first love, real first love and it never died. They eventually got together and were to be together forever. This movie contains some of my favorite movie/love quotes. I actually have grown to love this movie more and more upon each viewing, as at first I just liked it but the more I watch it the more I love Noah and Allie and the love they have for one another. Also the ending breaks my heart more and more each time as well.

“A Walk to Remember” (2002) was the first Nicholas Sparks movie that I saw, not long after it came out. I really was not sure how upsetting and sad it was going to be, but I cried so much watching this movie. I have always liked Shane West I thought he could really make it big, he put in a fantastic performance in this movie as did Mandy Moore. I really did just love everything about this movie on first viewing, the songs, the acting, the story just everything.

“Message in a Bottle” (1999) is a suprising one as it took me so long to watch it, as you may know I am a massive Kevin Costner fan so never had any doubt that I would not like this movie. Paul Newman played his dad was just so funny and great in the role adding a different edge to the story. Theresa (Robin Wright Penn) discovers a tragic love letter on a beach and traces it back to Garret (Kevin Costner) who wrote it to his wife who died early. They end up spending a lot of time together, and she attempts to help him move on from his wife. Which proves very difficult, will they be together in the end?

The common storyline for all Nicholas Sparks novels/movies is a love story, but they all have rather sad and tragic endings. The great love stories often seem to be very short lived and while have potential to last forever and be the great love of each others lives, a tragic event occurs for either the man or the woman. But what makes these stories so great? For me it really has to be the method in which the love is shown, the main characters often have fantastic chemistry with each other and it seems just so believable. It has to be the type of love that everyone must want in their life time, to be that close to someone else and just really want to spend all of your time with that person. I am sure that is not just me!

Lets hope that next year’s releases are as good as the previous four movies I have enjoyed. Any Nicholas Sparks fans have opinions on this?

É onde ele conhece Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore), a filha do pastor, tímida e recatada.

Hallelujah
as performed by Jeff Buckley

A man may be prepared to live a lie for his entire life, but many would argue that the belief someone will die to uphold proves it’s not a lie, at least not their own lie.

The problem is of course entrenchment.

As Jane Austen’s Marianne Dashwood points out, “What could be more glorious than to die for love?”

The risks of entrenchment in a concept, an “inner feeling” that (as Leonard Cohen warns) will “come and go”, that we mistake for Love is the subject that launched my first “note” two years ago.
A quick summation, us Knights on White Horses fall in love with fighting the dragon and the sweet girls fall in love with the idea of “A Walk To Remember” on which they’ll redeem the bad boy and both experiences are paramasturbatory in giving us some quest that is inwardly focused, our own affirmation of having a love that will conquer all odds, rather than Love, which is focused on the Other.

Love that is patient, and kind, and not self-serving, and all that lovely laundry list.

Love that is not so concerned with the idea of whether MY love is strong enough to WIN HER or to FORGIVE HER or to stand the test of the Montagues and Capulets and the fact that I’m a penniless Sitar Player.

No, rather, Love is concerned with the best interests of the Beloved.
“Speak the truth in love” to help another become the best they can be.
Give, out of love, without expecting return, recognition, acknowledgment, or anything else that in any way involves the Lover, but is ever focused on the Beloved.

But Death of a Lady’s Man, you say, that’s not at all romantic! Where’s the moment when [she]/[he] turns and sees you standing there, faithfully as you always have, and [she runs to your arms]/[he takes you in his arms].

“We’ll know, won’t we?
Stars will explode in our eyes.
But they don’t, do they?
Stars have their moment, then die.”
-Nick Cave
Are You The One That I’ve Been Waiting For

There is no waiting for someone.

As my last entry explored, we cannot find our strength in our hope for someone else, our hope in someone else, our hope in Love.

Because Love is not meant to give us our strength.

We are meant to give Love its strength.

To Love is an action, and the presence of Love in this world is not a matter of us tapping into The Force that surrounds us and being positively uplifted by a pop song or the way someone’s smile makes our heart stop and keeps it beating all at once.

The presence of Love in this world has everything to do with us taking action, it is on us to Love each other.
There is no good that comes without intention. The nature of the universe is destruction and disorder and so it is our active responsibility to go in the opposite direction.
And that is never easy.

And so we say we will require strength from outside of ourselves.

The moment we demand that Love provide us the strength to do anything, we not only cheapen Love, but we replace it with its lower-case modern substitute.

Rather, it is an act of will to Love unconditionally, and without expectation.

And I don’t just mean romance.

Most religions will agree that what you seek, whether Salvation or Nirvana or Transcendence, will require you to die to some aspect of the Flesh.

Even filmmaker David Cronenberg’s arguable masterpiece, Videodrome, demands a death of the old flesh to be born into the new flesh.

So what is it that Death of a Lady’s Man really means?

Initially, my concern was that we are at risk of destroying the concept of a “Lady’s Man” (singular possessive) in that monogamy with true fidelity is threatened, not by TV or Playboy, but by the new rules of the dating world that are based in subterfuge, manipulation, and even exploitation, as well as fear (both cultivating it in the other and the fact that fear drives so much of the new “strategy” of this game).

The fundamental argument though is before the question of the interaction even.

“You make me want to be a better man.”

And we all swoon.

Because it’s true.

When Jack Nicholson says it to Helen Hunt, it is the greatest compliment he can pay her.

But we have to go deeper.

Because there will be days she does not make him want to be a better man.

There will be days she makes him want to go on a three-week bender.

There will be days she makes him want to flirt with his secretary in such a way that she’ll find out about it. Not to make her jealous even, but to hurt her because he saw her swooning over Alexander Skaarsgard in last week’s “True Blood”.

But we can agree, it’s a good thing that he wants to be a better man.

We can agree, because if we’re lucky, we’ve encountered someone who made us feel that way.

But, like any drug, the high will fade and we better be damned sure there’s something more stable underneath it as a foundation.

And so, “Death of a Lady’s Man” calls for the death of that concept.

A Lady’s Man.

The Knight who did his deeds of valor for the honor of his fair maiden.

Isn’t it everything we want and more?

Well, if your answer was no, wait ’til you’re 30.

– Or so I’m told. I had the grave misfortune of being born far older than my years, like a Benjamin Button in desire rather than body.

It’s not enough though.

Before we can be a Lady’s Man, we have to be a Man.

It is essential that we find a way to translate the glorious ambition that loving a good woman instills in a man (I apologize, for the most part I’ll try to write less gender-specific in the future, but take what you will from it) and instead make that our standard for ourselves.

“I practiced on my sainthood
I gave to one and all
But the rumours of my virtue
They moved her not at all.”
-Leonard Cohen
I Came So Far For Beauty.

But we can’t do it for Beauty.

Do it for God, if you will.
Do it for World Peace.
Do it for whatever noble cause you choose.

And on the day that “God says nothing back but ‘I told you so’”,
on the day that they finally hold World War III out on Highway 61,
on the day even the most noble cause can’t rouse you from your bed,

On the day that Beauty is unmoved by all Leonard’s goodly deeds,

You may still be prepared to die for your belief.
But it won’t be your belief you die for, but your pride.

Because if you have claimed this cause, this “flag on the marble arch”, for long enough, it won’t matter whether it’s real, you’ll have to be heretic to yourself in order not to be heretic to the cause you’ve subscribed to.

Believe in everything outside of yourself, but first belief in everything inside of yourself.

“Man’s reach should exceed his grasp.”

But if man is finite, limited by knowing that he Is what he Is (“I yam what I yam” quoth Popeye) than his reach will not extend, and his grasp will pull his entire body down.
You do not reach the stars by looking up and stretching.

Growth.

Like a tree.

And what a tree requires to grow outwards is that it first take deep root.

Bury the ideal of the “Lady’s Man”, and in the same way that a seed must “die” to plant a new creation, there begin the roots of Man.

The possessive singular is wonderful.

You see, a modifier added to a noun adds so much.

That’s its purpose.

But first, let the noun be well built, or the phrase will have no meaning.

“I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch.
And listen.
Love, Love is not some kind of victory march.
No, it’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah.”
- Emphasis as performed by Leonard Cohen
London, 2009
Hallelujah

“Hallelujah” literally translated is “Praise Yahweh.”

It is praise and thanksgiving and an expression of gratitude and adoration.

And so, Love is not the Knight standing over the slain dragon.

But gentlemen, please do slay dragons for Love’s sake.

And Love is not Mandy Moore convincing Shane West there’s something more to his life and taking a victory lap down the aisle.
But ladies, please do continue to inspire men to better themselves.

Love is continuing to reach up and out in the midst of cold brokenness.

Love is the single most Courageous thing you can do.

Because Love is not really, really liking this person and just knowing that it’s going to work out.

Love is not candy and flowers.

Love is the definition of Courage provided by Atticus Finch in “To Kill A Mockingbird”:

“Courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”

Because I have bad news.

Love doesn’t “win”.

The second Love wins, the world is over and Love has nothing left to do with itself.

Love, by definition, always hopes and always perseveres, and so, my friends, Love requires adversity.

Love simply continues to reach too high, not in an attempt to reach up and seize the hand of some damsel in the tower, but rather to reach up to Olympus and steal fire from the gods, not because we ourselves are cold and broken, though we are, but simply because it seems that those around us are in need of warmth.

Girls, looking for another romance movie that can sweep you off your feet? Getting tired of watching The Notebook and The Titanic over and over agian? Well, if your into those types of movies, A Walk To Remember is a good movie.

High school student Landon Carter is one of the popular guys at school. And when he and his friends get in trouble by a prank, the principle has a few punishments for Landon, one of them participating in the school play. Jamie Sullivan, the reverend’s daughter is also in the play, who is nothing like Landon at all. Landon and his friends made fun of Jamie for being too good. And since the two have the leading parts, Landon starts to spend more time with her, even though they come from two different classes in the high school mind. The two start to fall for each other, and eventually are together. But when Landon finds out about a secret Jamie has been hiding, it completely changes everything.

What is the secret? Will the secret affect Landon and Jamie’s relationship? Can they have a successful relationship, even though Jamie doesn’t fit in at all, and Landon does?

I would defiantly suggest watching this movie. There are really funny parts to it, and there are some really sweet parts to it. I actually started crying thoughout the movie. So if your in for a romantic movie, please watch this one.

First of all, Evan’s birthday was yesterday so happy (late) birthday to fiercest queen ever!

Secondly, rumors are swirling that Evan and “True Blood” actor Alexander Skarsgard (the one who everyone thinks is hot) are dating. According to Lainey Gossip, Evan was seen hanging out with Alexander over the weekend when she went to visit him on the set of his movie “Straw Dogs.” If this is true, it certainly is a step up from Manson and even Shane West. I think they’d look good together.

Anyways, Evan was seen leaving a doctor’s office the other day which I know is totally news-worthy but this post needed some pictures and she looked pretty, so click away for the rest.

There’s no doubt Stephen Norrington’s a lousy director but he’s not atrocious enough someone should retire from acting because he or she had to work with him–and Sean Connery didn’t even get the worst scenes in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. It’s a stunt casting of Connery and, when compared to the source material–it’s no surprise, but he’s really against good character work. He refused to let them write the character as anything other than an aged Indiana Jones.

The scenes with him and Shane West–West isn’t bad, but he’s not charismatic enough for the role; he’s sturdy and unexciting–play like a May-September bromance. In fact, when West shows romantic interest in Peta Wilson, it’s almost strange, because his character is so asexual.

Besides the two of them, Tony Curran and Jason Flemyng, the acting’s pretty atrocious in the film. Wilson’s awful, Stuart Townsend seems to be doing a (really bad) Johnny Depp impression, Naseeruddin Shah–and it’s not clear if it’s intentional–totally lacks personality.

The special effects range from bad video game quality–the car chase through Venice is awful and almost comical, it must have looked hilarious on a big screen–to tolerable. For whatever reason, the film has more success with Flemyng’s Dr. Hyde than, say, Ang Lee’s Hulk had with its CG creation.

And while Norrington is British, it feels like he doesn’t really get the possibilities of the concept. Worst, I suppose, are James Robinson’s one liners. They bomb.

“The Echelon Conspiracy” like “Spring Breakdown” shows a growing trend of making theatrical level films that end up going straight to Blu Ray. The aspect here is a fairly good cast and nice locations despite a somewhat basic storyline. The throughline follows a computer that is supposed to be a watch dog for the NSA and protect the freedom of Americans. It starts operating outside its parameters on its own which we eventually find is a glitch in its programming. It traces the government involvement in cover-ups which brings to mind HAL’s conundrum in “2001″. Now this is an adequate perception and the film does not play it over the top. It keeps its progression fairly rooted in reality although the eventual resolution and placement of a Russian operative seems a little suspect.

Shane West, who hasn’t been seen as much lately, places a young ex-NSA operative who happens to be picked by the computer to become the recipient of money although the perceptions of the machine and why it is texting him specifically do not seem to make much sense. That said the surrounding direct circle of Ving Rhames and Ed Burns and the peripheral parts of Jonathan Pryce and Martin Sheen throw some definite acting chops into the selection. Granted with some points (especially with Rhames and Sheen) you can see a slight wincing in the dialogue despite the fact that it serves the plot. The shooting in St. Petersburg Square in Moscow, like many more high budgeted films, gives the production a sense of scope and a very techno-based but very “Bourne”-like score along with a very fluid but subtle visual style gives the film an specific edge.

“The Echelon Conspiracy” is entertaining at times because it is not too intrinsic, doesn’t take itself too seriously and has the right amount of fun. While on an opening weekend it might get lost, it is a nice effective “night at the movies” at home which is sometimes lost on the big budget spectacles. People need simple pleasures and a mid budget thriller like this one (which brings to mind how “Taken” was made) shows an efficiency and clarity of filmmaking because it knows what it is. Out of 5, I give it a 2 1/2.

I really like the 4 movies I mentioned above. They feature talented and beautiful stars, they are beautifully directed and they have been adapted from the works of the same author: Nicholas Sparks. I have never read him, and I am not exactly tempted to. I am romantic and I like my emotional stories. I am also big fan of escapism- I like the movies that take us to a more beautiful place. But Sparks does seem to like giving this feeling and then abrubtly taking it away.

Let’s go over the movies shortly, shall we?

*Message in a Bottle (1999)

Starring: Kevin Costner, Robyn Wright-Penn

Garret Blake (Costner) is a sailor and he builds boats for a living. He is yet to overcome his beloved wife’s death. He has written love letters to her and sent them out into the open sea.

Theresa (Penn) finds the letters on the beach and decides to find the writer. She is a single mother- and having previously been cheated on, she wants to find the man who is so in love with his wife. And being a journalist, she does convince her boss that it is a business trip.

When she does get to meet Garret, she of course can’t tell him the truth. Garret is attracted to this fragile and beautiful stranger- the first woman he has ever felt close to after the loss of his wife. Theresa was already in love with the idea of the man. Real Garret only exceeded her expectations…

So two previously hurt people find love again. It is beautiful. We sail, laugh and cry with them. Of course they have obstacles. Theresa lives in the city and has a son, plus she can’t really get over feeling that he will never love her the way that he loved his wife…And he is bound to find out how Theresa got to find him… Couldn’t we have just sorted out these and moved along? Couldn’t we have let these likable characters be happy? Well, I could… But Nick had other ideas. It is a lovely story. But the truth is if you are looking for realism, why would you watch this in the first place? How many people love so unconditionally like that? How many people love like that for the second time? (in Theresa’s case-Garret might be her only true love) And what are the odds that they are going to look like Wright-Penn and most of all- Kevin Costner? So if we have let go all of the cynism and stretched our imaginations so far, why not let us have a happy ending?

* A Walk to Remember (2002)

Starring: Shane West, Mandy Moore

Yeah, of course you have all heard it before. Bad Boy. Good Girl. They fall in love. It turns out Bad Boy is actually a great guy- given the faith and chance. But…Before the but, let’s describe the good and bad in this movie.

The bad boy is Landon Carter. He is your typical angry and popular teenagers. His grades are low, the headmaster isn’t too fond of him, the girls love him, hates his father who left him and his mom for another woman and of course he thinks being unpopular is worse than death.

Cool, hot and bad

But one day he gets into trouble he can’t get out of, and the headmaster has the pleasure to make him do everything he despises. As if it is not enough that the trouble gave him temporary crutches…

Jamie is everything Landon isn’t. Nice, unpopular, uncool,a religious virgin. They have known and despised each other for a long time. But now, Landon has to play the lead in the theater group, tutor kids with learning problems- basically has to turn to Jamie for help. At some point though, they get to be less judgemental about each other and even get to be some sort of friends.

Landon goes for an impulsive, unscripted kiss

However Landon doesn’t seem to be ready to leave his previous lifestyle and lets his friends believe he is definitely not friends with Jamie-right in front of her. At the play night, Landon will realize not only he misses Jamie’s friendship, but that he is attracted to her…

Everyone is shocked- his friends, Jamie, him,…Now he has to prove to Jamie that he is not the bad-ass she thinks he is. He gets the chance when his friends play a horrible joke on Jamie and he sticks with Jamie, leaving his group. He persuades Jamie and her dad (the priest) to go on a date. OK- since I really like this movie, I can gladly explain why the clichés do not bother me:

1) Jamie isn’t quite an uckly duckling. For one thing, she is not ugly, just plain. For two, She just doesn’t believe in expressing herself with clothes. She sings and shows her beauty at the play and yet doesn’t maintain the glamorous attitude afterwards.

2) Landon only hates his father- he is actually helping out his mom at home.

3) Jamie shows him just like he sees her as a loser, she does see him as loser who will have nothing in life after high school. And as they are forced to spend time together, they realize that maybe things aren’t so black and white…

After this, it is so romantic. They go on dates, they have great fun together- Landon respects Jamie’s boundaires.

Perfect. Landon turns out from the guy who you would wanna have sex with yet wouldn’t be able to have a relationship from to the most amazing boyfriend on the planet. Does it last? Of course not. Jamie tells Landon one big secret that turns his life upside down. She has cancer. She has had it for a long time. And she is not responding to treatment. Landon is crushed. He is bitter and he is furious. I would be to. You fall in love head over heels and to find out you are going to lose that person forever? Life’s way of giving you the bird. He even asks for his dad’s help. But he can’t go around being angry at Jamie, right? She might die anytime…

So he sticks by her bed. He tries to do everything she has ever wanted. He makes her happy. It is great. Seriously. Previous asshole is the soulmate we have been dreaming about. And he looks like Shane West. Too unrealistic. So let’s kill the girl and make it even…

* The Notebook (2004)

Starring: Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams

Two time frame frames. Present, retirement home. Past, a rich girl (Allie) falling for the poor boy(Noah). They are mad about each other. They fight a lot but they can’t and won’t stay away from each other.

Allie and Noah

Somehow her mother manages to drive a wedge, yet neither of them forgets. We get to hear their story from the notebook the old guy in the retirement home is reading to the old woman. She loves the story of these two lovers who cross paths years later- when his name is on the newspapers for a lovely restoration he has made. She is about to be engaged to a guy she actually loves. But she can’t resist the urge to talk to him. The house belongs to both their pasts. So she visits him. They get to let out their feelings, and face why they were driven apart. Then Noah wants her to leave her fiancé- she is torn. But her feelings for Noah are just too strong…

It is beautiful. They stayed together. They had lovely children. They are still togeter- in the retirement home. You see, the guy is Noah- reading the story to Allie. How can you not be touched by that? Where’s the drama, you ask? Noah has to read the story to her over and over again because she has Alzheimer’s and she has no clue who he is. She flashes and remembers maybe for a minute- and then she forgets again…

Lovely, touching and tragic. It might be how it happens in real life. We don’t get to be in love forever, I get that. But sometimes I feel like the sad parts are thrown in just to make you cry. I love the movie, just like I love the ones mentioned above. Still, couldn’t have Allie remembered? Couldn’t she have a more managable disease and have her memory??? Of course, it wouldn’t be so powerful but…you get the point.

* Nights in Rodanthe (2008)

Starring: Richard Gere, Diane Lane

Actors are supposed to play all kinds of parts but let’s be honest, some actors do some roles better than others. And Richard Gere is great at drama- especially he is playing a romantic role. In Nights in Rodanthe, Richard plays a doctor named Paul. He is staying at the inn for a couple of nights. He is an unhappy man- he is being sued, his grown son doesn’t like him…

The only other person at the inn is Adrienne (Diane Lane), looking after the place for a friend. She is not having the time of her life either. Her husband has left for another woman now wants forgiveness, her daughter isn’t fond of her and her son has a condition…

They find it easy to get along, to open up to each other. They understand what being a parent is….They know about disappointments and mistakes. They truly see each other and they fall in love. It is the kind of romance that you dream about.

And it is so easy to fall in love with Gere. 59 at the movie, he is still hot. Diane Lane is also naturally beautiful. You like them. You don’t want them to be apart. But Paul has to do one thing before they can be together in the long run- he has to go see his son, renconcile with him and help him with his patients.

Long distance doesn’t ruin things. To the contrary. It empowers their feelings. They are looking forward to meeting again. The day finally comes. But Paul doesn’t. The next day, the door bell rings and Adrienne gets to meet his son. He doesn’t have good news…

Yes, Sparks did it again. He took the lovely fantasy and took it away in the end.

How am I supposed to read his work- when I know there’s a 99% chance at least one main character will die? Where is the fun in that?

Talked to Shane West, the much derided replacement for Darby Crash in the Germs throughout their recent resurgence as a reunion-style punk throwback band. Really, who could feasibly replace Crash? I don’t know. Theoretically, the whole thing seems to go against the entire concept of the band, but here we are anyway. At this point, this guy below has technically been in the band longer than Crash ever was:

From the interview:

“On our first tour, 80 percent of the crowd every night was negative about me filling in,” West said. “Now it’s down to about one hater per night.”

They did one show three years ago with fellow reunited punk grandpas the Dead Kennedys (also touring with a new singer after a falling out with founder Jello Biafra).

“I was really comfortable at that show,” West said. “The hatred everyone had toward them and their new singer was a lot more than what they had toward me. I loved it.”

Four of Nicholas Sparks’ novels have been made into movies: Message in a Bottle starring Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn (1999), A Walk to Remember with Mandy Moore and Shane West (2002), The Notebook starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams (2004), and Nights in Rodanthe with Richard Gere and Diane Lane (2008).

Sparks’ next novel-turned-movie, Dear John, will be released next year with Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried in the starring roles. He has also written his first screenplay, The Last Song, which stars Miley Cyrus and is currently in production. The dude’s been busy.

Full disclosure: Nicholas Sparks and I went to the same college. He was a year behind me at the University of Notre Dame, although we have never met. More disclosure: I have never read one of his books and, until this week, I had never seen any of the film adaptations. But last night I finally caved and watched The Notebook on DVD. One would have to be pretty cynical to not get sucked into the love story between Gosling’s Noah Calhoun and McAdams’ Allie Hamilton, and I’m no cynic.

What’s your favorite movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel? Voice your choice in today’s featured poll. And now that I’ve crossed The Notebook off my list, please let me know which one I should watch next.

I was doing a dvd marathon’s last night. Beside watching new movies that I missed in the theater, I watched some old movies too. One of the movie that I watched is A Walk to Remember, played by Mandy Moore and Shane West. I found an interesting movie summaries from www.wikipedia.com

When a prank on a fellow high-school student goes wrong, popular but rebellious Landon Rollins Carter (Shane West) is threatened with expulsion. His punishment is mandatory participation in various after-school activities, such as tutoring disadvantaged children and performing in the drama club’s spring musical. At these functions he is forced to interact with quiet, bookish Jamie Elizabeth Sullivan (Mandy Moore), the only daughter of their church’s pastor, and a girl he has known for many years but to whom he has rarely if ever spoken. Their differing social statures leave them worlds apart, despite their close physical proximity.

When Landon has some trouble learning his lines, he asks Jamie for help. She agrees to help him if he promises not to fall in love with her. Landon laughs off the strange remark, believing Jamie to be the last person with whom he would ever fall in love. After all, Landon has access to the prettiest and most popular girls in town; and between her shy demeanor and old-fashioned wardrobe, Jamie doesn’t exactly fall into that category.

Landon and Jamie begin practicing together at her house after school. The two form a tentative friendship, and Landon learns that Jamie has a wish list of all the things she hopes to do in her life, such as getting a tattoo and being in two places at once. One day, Jamie approaches Landon at his locker, where he is hanging out with some of his friends. When Jamie asks Landon if they are still on for practice that afternoon he smirks, “In your dreams.” His friends laugh and Landon’s smirk falters as Jamie’s face fills with betrayal and embarrassment. That afternoon, Landon arrives at Jamie’s house, hoping that Jamie will still agree to help him. But she refuses to open the door. When she eventually does, she sarcastically remarks that they can be “secret friends.” She slams the door in his face when he agrees. Landon eventually learns the script by himself.

During the play, Jamie astounds Landon and the entire audience with her beauty and voice. Landon kisses Jamie at the end of the play, which was not in the script. Landon tries to get close to Jamie, but she repeatedly rejects him. It is only after a malicious joke played on Jamie by Landon’s friends that Jamie agrees to get to know Landon. After he punches out Dean and shuns Belinda (his friends who played the joke), he takes Jamie home.

The two pursue a relationship. He asks if she will go to dinner with him, but she replies that she is not allowed to date. He wants the date so badly that he goes to her father in the church and asks him if he can take Jamie out to dinner. Her father says no. Landon asks for her father to have faith in him. He eventually says yes. He takes her out to dinner and dances with her, something he never did for anyone else. Landon then sets out to help her accomplish a few things on her wish list. One memorable date had Landon taking Jamie to the state line. He excitedly positions her to straddle the line in just the right way, and when Jamie asks him what he’s doing he tells her, “You’re in two places at once.” Her face lights up with joy, as she realizes that Landon set out to make her impossible dreams come true. One evening, Landon asks her to find a star for him with her telescope. When she asks why he is looking for it, he replies, “I had it named for you.” She embraces him and whispers, “I love you” to him for the first time.

One evening, Jamie finally tells Landon that she has terminal leukemia and has stopped responding to treatments. Landon gets upset at first. Jamie tells him that the reason why she didn’t tell him was because she was moving on with her life and using the time she had left- but then Landon happened and she fell in love with him. Jamie starts to break down as she says to Landon, “I do not need a reason to be angry with God,” and she flees.

Landon goes to his cardiologist father’s house and asks him to help Jamie. His father hesitates a bit, as leukemia is not his specialty, and says that he needs to examine Jamie and know her medical history before he could do anything. Landon responds by leaving in a huff.

Landon and Jamie make up the next day, by hugging and he tells her that he will be there for her always. Soon, word gets out about Jamie’s illness. Eric, Landon’s best friend who had also participated in the prank on Jamie, comes and tells him how sorry he is and that he didn’t understand. Later, Dean and Belinda both come and apologize.

Jamie’s cancer gets worse until she collapses in her father’s arms. He rushes her to the hospital where he meets Landon. Landon doesn’t leave Jamie’s side until her father practically has to pry him away. Jamie’s father sits with Jamie and tells her that “If I’ve kept you too close, it’s because I wanted to keep you longer.” Jamie tells her father that she loves him so much and he eventually breaks down into tears.

The next day, Landon comes to the hospital and sees Jamie being wheeled out of the ward. He asks Jamie what’s going on and she replies by asking him to thank his father for the help. Landon asks Jamie’s father what she means. He tells him that his father is going to pay for private homecare for Jamie. Landon is stunned, so later in that night, he knocks on his father’s front door. His father answers. Landon whispers “thank you” and his father hugs him. With all the exhaustion and fear billowing over, Landon breaks down in tears in his dad’s arms.

Landon continues to fulfill various wishes on Jamie’s list, such as building her a telescope so she can see a comet. Her father, who at first didn’t approve of him, helps out. After Jamie sees the comet through the telescope, Landon proposes marriage with Jamie accepting. Through this process, Landon and Jamie learn more about the nature of love. The movie ends with Jamie’s death, but only after the couple are married in the same chapel as was Jamie’s deceased mother, the event that topped Jamie’s wish list. Landon himself becomes a better person through Jamie’s memory, achieving the goals that he set out to do, like she did.

Four years later, Landon visits Jamie’s father. It is obvious that Jamie helped him focus and become a better person. For example, he reveals he has finished college and has been accepted into medical school; prior to meeting her he had no plans for life after high school. He tells Jamie’s father that he is sorry he could not grant Jamie’s wish to witness “a miracle” before she died. Her father replies by saying, “She did. It was you.”

Though I’ve seen it for many times, but my tears always comes down for that movie. It’s a very romantic-heart-touching movies, especially the moment when Jamie and Landon get married. I can’t imagine what Landon’s feeling in that situation. Then I just figured out something. It’s that really come from true story? I saw it in AWR’s movie credit… Huuuufff so touching, having life like that.. And yeah, this movie is one of my favorite soooo everlasting..
