There are three types of restaurant experiences I have found through my experiences with restaurants. The first is fine, the type of experience you have in a common-or-garden variety eatery you frequent quite a bit. You know what to expect, you can get a table by just wandering in from the street, you know the bill will at best make your wallet say ‘yeah you treat yourself. Don’t worry about me’ in your head. The second is maybe had with a larger group of people or one that you don’t know that well. Think meeting your new girlfriend/boyfriend’s family for the first time. This experience is more of an occasion, perhaps you go somewhere new that you suspect might have the menu written in a different language right above the English, your wallet may say things like ‘here mate, are you sure about this?’ in your head. You’ll probably put on a shirt. The third involves you having to transcend restaurant norms into a higher plane of dining consciousness, an affair so far beyond your understanding that you’ll have to learn how to dine out all over again, start from scratch. There are so many new rules and airs and graces your first instinct is to run before the guy behind the desk susses you out. Your wallet won’t say anything because it suffered a massive stroke. This week I had the immense pleasure of the third experience.

Nobody is a fan of feeling like a fish out of water. You won’t find anyone (except perhaps the truly asinine) joining that Facebook group, nobody will eagerly detail that awesome time where they felt like curling up into a ball and dying rather than muddle their way through a situation they knew nothing about. I’m thankful to say I handled myself better than I expected. I was going for a dinner for Kingston graduates who are currently based in Hong Kong. It was held on the 56th(!) floor of the Island Shangri-La hotel, which is impossibly nice and far too plush for the likes of me. The kind of place I would be afraid to walk on the carpets in. As soon as I stepped out of the taxi and into the lobby, the gentleman who opened the door for me asked ‘can I help you with something’. Shit! I had been found out! They knew I was an imposter, I really did think I’d last longer. Or maybe it was because I walked into the lobby and just stood there like a moron trying to work out which way to go. Door gentleman took me to the lift and pressed the 56 button for me. I can’t help but feel lazy. As the lift did its level best to stamp my brains into my shoes, I took the opportunity to panic about whether I was dressed correctly. I’m nothing if not productive, I can panic longer, about more things at once and more concisely than I’ve ever been able to before. I’m panicking at PHD level these days.

Things go awry immediately after setting foot in the restaurant. I stammer through an explanation as to why I have appeared in their lovely restaurant without much success. Not knowing who the booking was under I instead manage to set the Guinness World Record in ‘saying the words Kingston, Graduate and Dinner as many times as possible in three minutes’. Three different people look over the bookings, I am offered a seat on a sofa I fear will envelop me, I am acutely aware that my jacket is a little too big around the shoulders. I’m considering running when the third booking-looker-atter says that the man booked in at 7pm is something to do with Kingston University, the name sounds familiar so I say ‘yes that’s me’ and hope for the best. They’ve already sat down apparently. I didn’t know what to expect, I was thinking perhaps around twenty to thirty people seated at an array of tables, gentle laughter, speeches and announcements following the ‘hear about the latest news from the university’ section of the invite I received. Nah there was just me and the guy running it. In fairness there were four whole human beings intending to come, one canceled, the other two didn’t show up for whatever reason. Instead of a huge hall of people to smile awkwardly at and force conversation with (or network, I think they call that networking) there was a small table in a fantastically plush restaurant right next door to the Bank of China and some incredible views across the bay with only the one person to network with. So I was very lucky that he was an absolute delight to talk to.

My companion for the night is the head of Kingston’s Law school and has had many a trip over to this side of the world due to a connection with the University of Hong Kong. We decided to give the slack bastards half an hour before deciding to get cracking. Getting cracking apparently meant selecting the champagne we wanted to begin with from a trolley. My knowledge of champagne is much like my knowledge of football or the ins and outs of Jacobean literature. That is to say non-ex-fucking-istant (tmesis however, I ex-bloody-cel at). So when confronted with no less than six varieties of champagne and having their history and flavour lovingly detailed by the bald waiter (who to all other extents was exactly like what you would imagine a French waiter describing champagne to be like) I just had the theme tune from Playdays rolling around my head.

The food actually began with another waiter with a massive basket of about ten different types of bread rolls, I made the amazing faux pas of going to grab one with my filthy degenerate hands and almost having my fingers taken off by the waiter with the tongs. Small pots containing a cold jelly-like substance (the ingredients of which I have, to my shame, forgotten but they involved cabbage) were brought to our table with the purpose of amusing our mouths. My mouth found it particularly hilarious so on with the starters. I could hear a couple of vegan friends screaming in the back of my mind when I selected a foie gras to start followed by the veal. Mwahahaha, a fantastic ‘evil meat-eater’ dinner if ever I saw one. The starter came in a plastic bag (not like a Tesco one or anything) that was untied and slowly, slowly, agonisingly slowly, pulled away to leave the meat and the trimmings in the bowl. ‘Expertly done’ I told the waiter with a grin. As my mother would say: not a flicker. The foie gras was delicious and made me feel like I had just done something decadent and wicked and it would be bad for my health to keep it up. Like having sex with a Royal.

The veal was also excellent, so tender it was falling apart at just the mention of a knife going near it. My host selected his steak from the flambé menu so it came wheeled over on a cooker to the side of the table so we could watch as the fella in control apparently set his face on fire. I’m thankfully not so misinformed that I would leap out of my chair with my glass of water in hand and chuck it at him, expecting a round of applause so the main course passed in pleasant conversation and without incident. I did find it strange that when I went to remove my jacket (becoming shaky with anxiety that someone would spot how slightly big it was) a figure sprang out of nowhere to whip it off my shoulders for me. I suspect they install those guys in the chairs with an angled mirror.

The pudding was lovely too but what kind of pudding isn’t lovely? Well I’ll tell you! Bread and Butter pudding that’s what kind of pudding. I mean what is it? It’s just soggy bread, that’s not pudding, that’s just sloppy bread storage! But I digress. The bottle of far-too-good-for-the-likes-of-me wine finished we took our leave as every member of staff who served us all bowed slightly and said good night on the way out. I felt like I was walking past the curtain call of a west end stage production. We got lost on the way out (it’s bloody big hotel yeah? And there’s a mall underneath it!) but when that’s the only thing that goes wrong with an evening meal I call that a success. And so another rite of passage and another step towards grown-upism and eventual middle age. I have dined at Le Pantalon Fancée and didn’t commit any major crap-ups. It was good to talk to a professor of my old university and with a bit of luck there will be more events and a better turn out. I offered my assistance in organising anything that may come up, we swapped business cards (LIE: I wish I had a business card), shook hands and departed. It was distressingly adult and as close to business-like as I’ve come since returning to Hong Kong.

But then I remembered that to get to the hotel to begin with I stole someone else’s taxi by saying I was the guy they were looking for and the destination had changed. And then I pretended the language barrier was too great to discuss it in any further detail. Can’t grow up too fast can I?

Mystic Krewe of Shangri-LA

Today, I went down to the Quarter with my mom to watch the Krewe of Pontchartrain. Such a mistake.

This my third Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but I have attended Pensacola and Mobile parades my entire life. The Krewe of Pontchartrain was, by far, the worst parade I have ever been to.

I literally caught two beads. Two beads.

Their Web site claimed 15 floats and 20 bands – there were no more than six floats and maybe five bands, if that.

What the hell happened?

We did get a chance to walk paste the Mystic Krewe of Shangri-La as it was getting ready to roll in the Quarter (we were walking to claim our spot for the parade of disappointment).

We got more beads and better pictures from the two Shangri-La floats we walked by than the entire Pontchartrain parade. The people seemed more excited and friendly, as well.

Long story short: I will never waste another two hours of my life waiting for and watching the Krewe of Pontchartrain parade. I wish I could get those hours back and go to Metairie. We passed the Metairie parades tonight and they looked amazing.

Let’s put it this way: The Krewe of Pontchartrain was so disappointing that I am not even going to put a picture of the parade on this post. Mostly because the pictures were very boring.

I know we observed gluttony ate too much good food last Sunday. From Cerealicious that started our day, to Pepper Lunch steaks as our mid day meals and as if we have bottomless gastric pits, we had rooms for these heavenly yummies as our late afternoon desserts…

Admittedly, I’m no expert but I certainly know my palate.  Thankfully, my wife is also sure of her taste (that’s why she married me, *wink* and we’re blessed with a son who, at the young age of 5, have been dreaming of becoming a chef one day.  Needless to say, good food is one of those tangible things that binds our family together.

Last year, my family and I tasted several (but NOT ALL) yogurts, gelato and premium ice creams around the Metro.  And since I found luxury of time to upload them back, allow me to review them all to you… just be careful, you might drool on your keyboard, *grin*

From the creamiest and velvety ice creams, to air-less flavorful gelato and yogurts, I officially state that we like them ALL.   As I have written here before, I can never imagine a world without them.

Since I’ve tried yogurts from grocery freezers, I’ve known them to have distinctly little sour and tangy taste whether with fruity flavors or just plain.  But last Sunday, my view on yogurts’ taste was totally changed as I, Tina and Gabby were treated to GOLDEN SPOON by our friend, LG and thus, we have finally sampled a creamy yogurt that tastes like heavenly ice cream!

At the counter, you can taste-test different flavors before ordering; we even saw 2 ladies in front of us on the queue who just tasted Golden Spoon’s flavors and left the counter without an order. For us, we’re definite of our choices.  We preferred 2 of the uncommon variants;  those that are uniquely Golden Spoon flavors – CAKE BATTER and BOYSENBERRY.   They’re both delicious sans toppings; and absolutely, a must-try!  

Golden Spoon has a wide variety of toppings including hot toppings that aren’t offered in other yogurt stores.  But IMO, since  it tastes like ice cream already, it’s better enjoyed as plain unless for kids who wanted to add some colors to their desserts.

It’s reasonably pricier too than other brands. Golden Spoon Yogurt without toppings costs PhP 88 for MINI and the cups we had were sized at SMALL, costs PhP 155. You can also avail of their large tubs, pints or in cones.

My verdict : GOLDEN SPOON is just DIVINE! Not only because it’s delicious but it’s healthier than other sweet temptations.  

Although I and Tina still prefer a bit of sourness in yogurt, I wouldn’t mind paying Golden Spoon another visit to try other flavors!

Wherever there is commercial opportunity, criminality soon follows.

That is the somewhat dispiriting conclusion to be drawn from the annual fraud risk report from consultancy PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which will warn later today that the emerging low-carbon economy is facing a growing threat from fraudsters.

The report highlighted the VAT carousel frauds which have affected the European emissions trading scheme in recent months and are estimated by authorities to have already cost EU treasuries over €5bn.

The European police agency Europol has today revealed that the fraudulent trade in carbon credits that affected a number of countries over the past few months is far more widespread than previously thought and could have cost EU taxpayers up to €5bn in lost revenue over the past 18 months.

Europol said that suspicions of carousel fraud, so named because the fraudster can often buy back credits and then repeat the practice several times over, first arose in late 2008.

Europol said that after the reforms the market volume in each country fell by up to 90 per cent, indicating that the problem was extremely widespread.

I have something of a soft spot for the legend of Shangri-la, the idea that there’s a mystical city nestled somewhere in the Tibetan mountains where man can live an eternity in peace appealing to that little bit of Indiana Jones hidden somewhere inside me.

Never mind that the “legend” was invented in 1933 by author James Hilton for his novel Lost Horizon: it’s an enduringly romantic idea that still gives travellers inspiration today.

So I was pleased to see that the BFI (British Film Institute) are currently touring a new film around the country, one which this week offers film fans in Glasgow to take a trip back to another time, and another continent, to witness life in Tibet between 1922 – 1950 in The Search for Shangri-la.

Footage, shot by British explorers and dignitaries who passed through Tibet in the years leading up to the area’s occupation by the Chinese in 1950, has been pulled together into a stunning film which is part history lesson and part travelogue.

Starting with the first filmed record of Tibet, taken during the 1922 attempt to climb Everest, the British party responsible were permitted by the Dalai Lama to travel through Tibet en route to the fabled mountain.

Accompanied by a new score, evoking the music of the region, we watch as the explorers traverse crevasse and river in an attempt to ingratiate themselves with the locals, always careful to respect their customs.

We’re then taken on through the decades, witness to both monochrome and colour footage, the latter exploding on to the screen as villagers perform rituals and dances for their guests as the music soars behind them.

There’s even a glimpse of the young Dalai Lama himself, peering out at the crowds by the side of the road as he’s carried along.

Two sequences show footage taken by George and Betty Sheriff , the couple who ran the British Mission from 1943 to 1945. George was also a legendary plant collector in Bhutan and Tibet.

George created a garden at the residency, often visited by local dignitaries, including the Dalai Lama’s family. The following, fairly lengthy extract, comes near the end of the film and captures the thoughts of Betty Sheriff as she recalls her time there with her husband during her retirement in Kirriemuir, Scotland:

The Search for Shangri-la is fascinating and eerily beautiful glimpse at a time long gone, one that shouldn’t be missed on the big screen.

“Where would we go after Death?”, the greatest question among us. This age-old question has been questioned ever since the awakening of religious faction and yet they answer this partially metaphysically question spiritually. The question remains – Where?

In a more approach to spirituality, they said that after death, you’d have a chance to enter “Da Heaven” if you’ve done some righteous deeds in your mortal life on planet earth. Ironically, you’ll have to enter “Da Hell” if you’ve done some turpitude yet nefarious acts in your lifetime then you’ll have to face the music; In hell, you’ll suffer, feel in total remorse, getting burn mercilessly and so on with the bible’s verbosity of unrighteous stuff. Before you could enter either of them, you must pass through “Da Purgatory” which is a place that will determine which path you’ll be taking, it depends on the record of your action as a mere mortal at your presence on planet earth.

Apart from that, in a religious manner of speaking, death is not a problem, why? Because it’s just a cycle for everyone, only the body is being destroy but not the soul itself, they said that the soul is immortal, hence, you’d have reborn as a new child with the previous soul along with the whole array of personalities. Beside that, resurrection is also part of the whole after death or after life stuff. You might be able to enter paradise which is a place for soul to live, or rather shangri-la is too a place for consciousness and fellow soul.

Now, for the skeptical view point of after death, there will be nothing if you die; no purgatory, no heaven and no hell. Skeptics are far more based on logics and rationalities, this, in turn, will not believe such false statement. They will most probably say that you’ll just stay there like an in-animated object after death, just as plain as that. But this post a problem; we all know that everyone of us consist of consciousness and where does it go?

He’s written cookbooks with Jean-George Vongerichten and been a personal friend for 15 years, says Mark Bittman, New York Times food writer and author of a number of best-selling cookbooks himself.

In the NY Times latest food section, Bittman offers up Vongerichten’s favourite fried rice recipe. featuring leeks, crispy fried shreds of fresh ginger and a sunny-side-up fried egg. “It’s the straightforward but extremely clever refinements on the classic that make his recipe special,” says Bittman.
