Captains Log 11/24/2009 – Took a party of Kansas City folks with my first time first mate Tony and man did we slay them. Tony is old school and grew up in South Florida like I did, he has fished everything from skiffs to Vikings and back and he knows his stuff, us old time hard core guys are few and far between, believe it – when you find a cracker fish with them. The beauty of Saltwater Cowboy Charters is we are all experienced fisherman and crackers that love to fish and we fished it all here and all over the world. Anyway, you could not have asked for a better day the overcast weather (kept the heat down) and the 1-1.5 footers (I like more roll keeps the fish from seeing you) – we slayed porgies, snapper, red grouper and an abundance of sharks mostly lemon in the 4-5 foot range – man do they love to peel line off your reel. All in all for a 6 hour trip out about 20-25 miles it was fun. Check out the guy holding the shark in our gallery. >////’> tight lines!!

My goodness, it’s been quite a while! My world has been quite busy these days…ballet class pro

My goodness, it’s been quite a while! My world has been quite busy these days…ballet class problems, 4-H club meetings (5 weeks of cooking, 1 week of tying a quilt, 3 weeks of sewing), Cub Scout meetings and trainings, school with the kids, etc….

I don’t have anything earth-shattering or profound to blog about but I do have a few things to share.

First up: my boy is now a Bear in Cub Scouts (*sniff*…he’s leaving my den! Not grand). Here’s a rather washed-out picture of him getting his Bear book last week at pack meeting:

The kids did a wonderful job during the 4-H sewing meetings. The first two weeks we made long fabric hair ties and toy bags for the LDS Humanitarian Center, but last week the kids could make whatever they wanted. Ciara drew a shark picture on paper, cut it out, and used that for her pattern. She made a stuffed shark toy for her cousin Ethan’s birthday, coming up soon:

I’m so proud of her!! She did a terrific job!

Bran and Nia decided to make themselves toy bags, modeled on the Humanitarian ones:

I never would’ve thought it was possible to teach a 6-year-old to run a sewing machine. Nia and Bran did so well! I have to watch them carefully, of course, so they don’t hurt themselves, but all three kids wowed and amazed me.

Friday night I checked the weather for Saturday and it was supposed to be quite cold and snowy. Since I don’t have a hat yet, I gave my fingers a workout getting this done in time:

The fast, fun and warm Calorimetry from Knitty.com

I got up at 6am Saturday and worked like crazy until 7:45, finishing it just in time for Ciara and I to leave for the Twilight Lexicon New Moon party. (We thought we’d be standing outside in the cold for an hour, but that’s another story for another day.)

Speaking of knitting, I finally finished Bran’s stocking hat (after three tries…size was either too big or too small…third time was definitely the charm with this one!), made some matching fingerless gloves, and a scarf. I am not thrilled that the scarf isn’t longer. I measured it carefully but somehow it shrank while I was making it. The gloves are okay; not the best, but definitely better than the first pair I made last year (and since I didn’t have a pattern, I’m glad I managed to figure them out). The hat is grand and I know he’ll love it but I wish it was longer. He wants a really, really long one. I still need to make the pom pom for the end.

Bran’s been wanting fingerless gloves for a year

Ciara, modeling Bran’s matching set

The now-infamous “3rd time” hat

The kids and I got up early to shovel the snowy driveway this morning. I’m looking very much forward to a relaxing week…no ballet, no Cub Scouts, no 4-H. My brother and his wife are down from Idaho and I’m excited for all the upcoming family time. I hope you’re all safe and warm and enjoying family! Happy Thanksgiving!

Have you ever eaten something so spicy that you’d suck a cock just to get something to drink?

Have you ever eaten something so spicy that you’d suck a cock just to get something to drink? The chili that’s been sitting in my refrigerator was like that. Basically, my husband emptied about seven jars of cayenne into a stockpot and added crushed mice to taste. Oh, and mushrooms. We like mushrooms in our chili. In cases like this, we end up with enough food to fill a cheerleader’s well-greased asshole, and we eat it for days. I tend to pull the pot out, set it on the counter, and leave it there while I eat a bowl of sulfur and tiny bones, just in case I want seconds. My husband is convinced that I’m going to get food poisoning.

But I won’t, and neither will you. Food that has been out of the fridge for a while is not lethal. Neither is carpet grit, dust mites or tap water. You all have this idea that “impurities” and “toxins” and “free-radicals” are some kind of microscopic army of ninjas just waiting to deplete your body’s whatever-the-fuck. Half the bacteria you douse your hands in alcohol to kill don’t give a shit about you and your neuroses.

The advent of the vacuum cleaner began the process of shrinking mankind’s collective balls. All of a sudden, it isn’t enough to take the rugs out and hit them with a stick until they look less gray. Now you’ve got to get rid of all the “dirt you can’t see.” We used to give dishes a few swipes with cold water and lye soap and call it good. Now we’re in a state of complete panic if we see “water spots” on a glass. Our nuts are now so small that they’ve migrated into the pelvis, allowing the sack to hang in folds and form the wrinkled twat that has replaced our once virile danglers.

Human beings are animals, and animals are built to live in filth. You know what we’d be doing in the wild? Sleeping in the dirt, motherfucker! With ants! We’d be eating raw meat with hair on it and drinking from green, gelatinous pools. (Think your sister’s panties with less stagnant trucker cum.) A wild human would shit on the ground and let his hair grow into actual dreads and never wash his hands or pits. Basically the most disgusting homeless guy ever + the Canadian wilderness. But you know what? One swing of his healthy, red-blooded crotch conkers and a rabid bear with a 30-foot conjoined shark wouldn’t stand a chance.

If you want huge balls, you’ve got to start eating everything off the floor. And no 5-second rule bullshit. It needs to sit there until it’s stuck in the carpet fibers. Refuse all vaccines and sit directly on every toilet seat you can find. When someone sneezes, run over immediately and rub your face all over him. And if he’s already thrown the coveted mucous out in a tissue, retrieve it and lick up the manliness. You’ll need that hearty immune system when you’re trolling for gutter whores with your enormous bag hanging out the back window.

Josh is going to see Eddie Izzard tonight. He keeps going on about it. He’s so happy. I’m not. Why would he want to go to a different country, (A country he makes clear he hates) to see someone. It got me thinking. Maybe if I was funny people might like me. Even going from a different weird country to come and see me. So, I thought i’d write some jokes, see what you think of them:

Why did the shark cross the reef?

To get to the other tide!

Why did the shark eat his dentist?

Because he could.

A shark walks into a bar.

Ouch.

What do you call a suicidal shark?

Philip.

If a shark held three apples in one hand, and two apples in the other, what would he have?

Some weird disorder, sharks don’t have hands!

Okay. Some observasional humour now:

What if a shark couldn’t swim?

Would quiet sharks be called shhhharks?

What would you call a loud shark?

Meet the Eastern Pacific black ghost shark (hydrolagus melanophasma), a recently discovered species of cartilaginous fish that sports a sex organ on its head.

A member of the chimera (chimaeridae) family, this rather dull-looking fish is a distant relative of sharks. Evolutionarily, the chimeras split off from their toothy, chompy cousins nearly 400 million years ago and remained isolated in very deep waters. Fast forward to the present day and most of the chimeras don’t look very shark-like at all.

Like most members of its family, the Eastern Pacific black ghost shark lives in the deep dark. It uses it’s wing-like fins to glide gracefully through waters thousands of feet deep off the coasts of California and Mexico. Specimens have been dredged up several times since the 1960s but most ended up in nameless collections in the basements of museums around the world.

I think I’ve kept you waiting long enough, let’s get to the bit you’re really reading this for, the “sex organ on the head” bit.

Perhaps slightly disappointingly, the appendage in question is not a penis, it’s a tentaculum, a graspy thing. The forehead tentaculum of the Eastern Pacific black ghost shark is retractable, club-shaped and spiked. He uses it to move and manipulate females during mating, how the female feels about being prodded with a spiky club when she’s feeling amorous is anyone’s guess.

The forehead tentaculum of the Eastern Pacific black ghost shark is one of the oddest appendages in the sea. Think of it as a sort of cross between an arm and a piscine sex toy, a forehead-mounted fishy f**k stick.

Hello Poptropican Peoples,

So, today we have yet another new Creators’ blog post, the third day in a row of them. This post is called “New Store Stuff!” Quite an original name.

SHARK BOY

If you noticed, Shark Boy changed his avatar for this post. You may see that he’s still the same on all the others, so it’s not permanent or anything.

Anyway, this means that you can spend money on a tiger shark and swan ballerina (whatever that is) costume. I think the tiger shark costume looks pretty cool, although that’s probably just because it’s orange, and I like orange.

This post also leaves a few hints about other stuff. Shark Boy mentions how the team is “crazy busy working on some really awesome Poptropica islands”. Yeah, that’s right, islands. Island in the plural form. Multiple islands. ISLANDS! This means that the creators are working on more than one island right now. We know that Counterfeit is one, but what’s the other? Was Reality TV Island not abandoned at all? Are there other islands that they’re working on that we haven’t heard of yet? This is probably the first time that an update to Poptropica costumes got me excited! Reality TV might still be… ALIVE!!!

I thank you, Mr. Shark Boy, for making my day.

We had a cool chill in the air as we headed out of Naples City Dock. Gator and I had procurred nice pinfish off the Gordon Pass light prior to picking the party up at the City Dock. Our fist stop was a ledgy area due west of the Pass, it was not five seconds and BIG Red Grouper were peeling line. Within the first hour we had limited out on keepers, threw back probably no less than 50 mid size. Then with chum in the water both Yellow Tail and Mangrove Snapper started to be caught. We switched to lighter gear and the guys had a blast catching flags and more keeper Grouper. About this time one of the guys was reeling in a yellowtail and POP from under the boat came the biggest King Fish you have ever seen this time of the year (at least 45lbs+) this fish had shoulders he was so big! On the way in this day I stopped over some areas known for Kings, while the kings did not show there were several nice lemon and black tip sharks which our party was able to hook and bring into the boat on light tackle. Whata day take a look in the Gallery at the photo called Table Fare. All in All over 100+ fish caught by our party of four – Way to go Guys!! > / / / / ‘>

To many people there’s not many things scarier than a great white shark. This is mainly due to the fact that many people have not heard of megalodon (charcharodon megalodon).

A prehistoric super-shark that is thought to have grown three times the size of the great white, megalodon’s name translates to mean “big tooth”. By far and away the most deadly known fish to have ever cruised the oceans, the prey of this gargantuan shark mainly consisted of whales (yes, that’s full-size big bastard blowholin’ whales).

Excavations of the fossils of half-eaten whales have sometimes found megalodon teeth nearby and some have even been found with the 18 cm gnashers still embedded in them.

As the skeletons of megalodon were made of cartilage just like those of modern sharks, full fossils are near non-existent. However, by examining the shark’s well-preserved teeth, scientists have been able to estimate that megalodon could reach lengths of over 60 feet and weighed over 100 tons.

Fortunately for modern swimmers, the megalodon lived in the Oligocene epoch and Neogene period, over 20 million years ago.

The National Geographic Society’s historical mission has been to “increase and diffuse geographic knowledge while promoting the conservation of the world’s cultural, historical, and natural resources”. More recently their President, John M. Fahey Jr put it more succinctly when he said the Society’s purpose was “to inspire people to care about their planet”.

But are the demands of commercial television at odds with these stated aims?

Chris Fischer shows off his scientific equipment.

Promotion for National Geographic Television’s Expedition Week has been heavily focussed around Expedition Great White…

A hundred sixty miles off the coast of Baja California, a team of world-class anglers will land one of the most challenging fish imaginable: the great white shark. Unlike any other catch ever attempted, they’ll lift an SUV-sized shark onto a platform, mount a long-lasting tracking tag by hand, take measurements and DNA samples, and release it unharmed… all within minutes. Marine biologist Dr. Michael Domeier uses advanced tracking devices to help uncover how this predator lives, with the ultimate goal of conserving and protecting this endangered species

The programmers at National Geographic know well enough that sharks, particularly “SUV-sized” ones are ratings gold but is getting a “team of world-class anglers”, in this case TV fishing personality Chris Fischer and Fast and Furious actor Paul Walker, to catch them scientifically necessary or in the best interests of the shark? A lot of experts think the expedition is potentially doing the animals, which included one enormous 4,200 pound female, more harm to than good.

If this fish actually was an SUV you could fit 87 students inside for a new world record

Dr. Pete Klimley, a professor of marine sciences at UC Davis, warned California Department of Fish and Game and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration not to grant permission to the expedition, saying…

You’re taking an animal that’s two tons and which needs the water to support its weight, and suddenly removing it from its environment. Their internal organs could rupture, causing death days later, unborn pups inside a pregnant female could be squashed or forced out of their body

Even shark dive operations in the area have weighed in on the matter with Mick Menigoz, skipper of the cage diving boat Superfish saying…

We pushed for the new regulations, and we’ve bent over backwards for years to not hurt or bother the sharks. We’re not even allowed to approach them, and now they’re letting these guys come in and use baited hooks to catch them. I’d be surprised if they don’t kill one

And those fears came close to reality when the first shark caught by the team was hooked deep in the back of its mouth. After a 40 minute tussle the exhausted animal was hauled on board but it took 8 minutes to remove a fishing buoy from the shark’s mouth before a hose pumping sea water over its gills was able to be inserted. A pair of bolt cutters then had to be stuck through the gills to reach the hook where it was cut, leaving the business end still lodged in the fish’s throat.

Dr Michael Domeier, the marine biologist with the expedition likened the stress placed on the sharks to that placed on a bass when a fisherman catches and releases it. Above all he sees the research and the television programme as a vital part of plans to save the Great White, which is listed as an endangered species.

…this is a show about real science, not science created for TV, which is so often the case

Others, such as Sean Van Sommeran, an independent Santa Cruz researcher with the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, don’t have such a rosy view either of the methodology or the science…

If you were to hook a protected species of two-ton marine mammal and drag it onboard a boat, people would go through the roof. Speaking facetiously, I might call his study ‘Flight Behavior of White Shark with a Barbed Hook in Its Gut

It remains to be seen what sort of data Domeier will gather from the tags, which are placed on the dorsal fin by drilling holes through the fin and then bolting them on. One thing that probably can be counted on is the National Geographic, who have always seen sharks and nazis as catnip to viewers, have probably got a ratings winner on their hands. And in those circumstances the research will, no doubt, be heralded by the Society as “groundbreaking”.

I’ll leave you with a picture of the “scientific expedition” hard at work.

The wait is over! Well at least if you were wondering what set I found at Toys R Us yesterday. In case you didn’t read the title of this post, I got Guardian of the Deep. The other LEGO Atlantis set the had was #8056 Monster Crab Crash.

Here you can get a close up of the diver and the new ring element

The ring element reminds me a lot of the old Insectoid crystals and it has a similar connection on the back. There are five different colored rings with different images on each ring.

There are a couple other new elements

The built set looks like this

The shark’s tail look ridiculous, but I can’t complain too much since you get two 1×12 yellow plates to make that tail.

All in all, for $15 (USD) its a great set. You get lots of the new larger tooth element in both white and black. Diver has decorated printing on the front and back of his torso and also on his legs and feet! And finally, the ring element is just cool, even if it doesn’t seem to have a purpose.

I did a full review with more detailed pictures on Eurobricks.
