Quite the come on Sharks performance in their 5-4 shootout win over the Edmonton Oilers. After the 7

Quite the come on Sharks performance in their 5-4 shootout win over the Edmonton Oilers. After the 7-2 debacle last game against Chicago, I expected a bit more effort tonight, but alas, this is San Jose. Effort is harder to come by than a 2012 convention at your local church.

Patrick Marleau scored a hat trick with Joe Thornton as the set-up man on all 3. And every goal of Patty’s looked similar. All involved Joe being at or behind the goal line and throwing the puck to Patty in front of the net. Easy pickings for Marleau, who also tallied an assist later for a four-point night.

Ryane Clowe was the other goal scorer. He and Joe Pavelski camped out in front of the net, and Clowe pocketed the rebound.

Not many Sharks showed up tonight, unfortunately. And since all my angry emotions are drained from the Chicago game, I won’t be going off on them as much.

Please tell me why you wouldn’t play as hard as you could after a crappy performance. Your manhood was tested and you come back tonight with another ball-less act. You’re making a joke of yourselves. This should have been a blowout. Edmonton is destined for the NHL cellar and you guys needed a shootout to beat them? Really now?

I’ve avoided the Todd McClellan criticism, but this goes on him. I still don’t know what he’s like in the locker room, but if he doesn’t yell, that needs to change. This was inexcusable.

Joe Pavelski fights for position (From SJSHARKS.com)

OK, I’m really tired of talking about defensive letdowns but tonight it was as blatant as ever. One Edmonton goal came when Dan Boyle tried to bring the puck into the Oilers’ zone and was pickpocketed. A breakaway later, the Oilers were on the board. Another time, Jason Demers attempted a stretch pass, which was promptly intercepted. An offensive breakout later, another Oiler goal.

I guess I should just accept these kinds of things because that’s what Boyle and Demers do — try to create offense — but it’s just so annoying seeing it EVERY SINGLE GAME.

Tell Me Why

Kent Huskins and Derek Joslin were on the ice in overtime for a 3 on 3 situation. For the love of all that is holy, give me one good reason why those two have any business being out there.

Other Notes

Hit-O-Meter: SJ 16 EDM 22; Douglas Murray and Ryane Clowe led with 3 each.

Torrey Mitchell returned to the lineup for the first time this millenium; however, we didn’t get to see much from him. He accumulated 6:25 of ice time with one shot.

The Sharks play Vancouver on Sunday.

Malapascua is a beautiful little island north of Cebu. I met up with Omar at Cebu city’s north

<img title="Do not copy content from the page.
Malapascua is a beautiful little island north of Cebu. I met up with Omar at Cebu city’s northern bus terminal for the 4 hour bus ride up. Following that was a short 15 minute boat road across and then this idyllic sight met us.

We spent a good few days diving with Sea Explorers, a very good scuba outfit that took really good care of us. The board below shows Malapascua (right below the tresher shark) and the types of wildlife you can see there. It’s most famous of course for the thresher shark, but there’s lots of other stuff to see there too, like mandarinfish (mating ones at that!), blue ring octopi (which I didn’t spot), lots of other types of sharks and unusual stuff like hairy frogfish and harlequin shrimp.

It was pretty fun except for the early morning dives, the earliest of which requiring us to be awake at 4.30am. These were to catch the thresher sharks as they came out early to the cleaning stations when the water was cooler. Here’s one of me and the dive guides at sunrise. I look uncharacteristically cheerful in this picture.

So did we see any threshers? Yup, just one for a couple of seconds out of maybe four hours underwater for the dives we were down there. It was a pity but the rest of the diving made up for it. Omar’s blogged about the trip here and I think he’s done a better (and far faster) job of it.

A brief pictorial impression; click on the images in the gallery to enlarge.

(Photographic nerdiness; well in the semi-dark of an aquarium I would be nowhere without the gaping wide aperture of my 50mm f/1.7 lens – helped by in-body image stabilisation [is that a stab at Canikon? it might be])

To add a written impression as well; better than expected, the building is classic, makes you feel like your time-travelling back to the Victorian days. Most fish species are not terribly exotic or rare, but they are diverse, ranging from sturgeon via (the obligatory) rays and clownfish to spotted eels. I was positively surprised by the large number of conservation projects supported by Sea Life – very nice indeed.

Realising they support the “good causes” helps to understand the steep, IMO, entry price of nearly £15; they are not just feeding the fishes from that! Still, we were glad to have a 50% discount :p (hey, I’m Dutch, you know!).

We spent a good 2 hours inside, taking our time but also not looking at every little thing in great detail. So you could stretch it to 3 hours if you tried, which is a lot more than we were “fearing” beforehand. In summary, if you can get the discount (we got one from Pinocchio’s restaurant; 50% for up to 4 people, offer ends, I think, end of 2009) and go there, you will not regret it!

And now without further ado, the photos.

When it comes to writing, I use a reservoir. I feel sudden bursts of creativity and go on a writing spree trying to get every thought out onto paper like a madman in an institute. Scrambling and furiously typing – in the modern age, the madmen will use keyboards rather than pens – I try to convey whatever I can in that brief moment of inspiration before I lose it.

Like a good breeze, I set sail on my course navigating through waters of treachery and deceit. It’s a long journey with predators lurking off the starboard bow but the journey is what makes that end result worth it. To overcome obstacles and demons to get to where we want to go makes us appreciate the journey.

However, I can’t suddenly start posting every single drop of text because it might just be too much and lead to flooding. Like the banks of the Mississippi, the levees might just break. So I save everything to my reservoir and slowly release the contents like a regulator. The dams be damned, I set the pace.

My husband, Ron, and I have been diving since 1986, the year he presented me with dive gear as a wed

My husband, Ron, and I have been diving since 1986, the year he presented me with dive gear as a wedding gift, opening the door to an exciting shared passion. In the intervening years, we dove whenever we could. Now we’ve taken it one step further by having our own boat, Equinox, a 58-foot Kadey-Krogen trawler, outfitted with a Nitrox dive compressor. While we live aboard on the Chesapeake Bay in the summer, Equinox’s winter berth is at Old Bahama Bay Marina on Grand Bahama Island, and it’s been ideal for our diving hobby.

Diving in
The Bahamas

• With a subtropical climate, you won’t need more than a three-millimeter wet suit.
• Both easy and challenging dives can be found at each island, for instance, the Andros Barrier Reef offers shallow diving on one side, then a steep drop off wall on the other where on a clear day you can see down 250 feet.
• Reputable dive operators can be found on all but the furthest of the Out Islands, such as Acklins and Crooked, though plans are in the work for a dive center in Mayaguana. Nassau, Grand Bahama, Long Island, and Staniel Cay are home to dive centers offering the latest equipment, nitrox diving and certification courses.
• Power and sailboat liveaboard dive boats are available for those who want make multiple dives daily. Leaving from Nassau and Grand Bahamas, some routes wind through the Exumas and even travel as far as the Cay Sal Banks.
• Beach diving isn’t recommended for the Bahamas because shallow beaches could have you walking far with heavy gear.
• There are 360 blue holes in the islands, and Dean’s Blue Hole on Long Island is the deepest in the world at a stunning 663 feet. If you like drift diving, Current Cut in Eleuthera is the place to go–with a seven mph current through a narrow cut, divers relate it to the thrill of being on a roller coaster. Also off Eleuthera is a sort of underwater Grand Canyon called the Plateau, (45’ to 80’) adorned with the some of the largest brain coral you’ll ever see. Bimini is home to Tuna Alley–head there around noon, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by an unbelievably large school of tuna reflecting the light of the mid-day sun.

In a unique turn of events, while vacationing aboard with our 15-year-old daughter Ally and her friend, Claire, during their spring break, we happened to meet Greg Barron of the sports company, Incredible-Adventures.com. Greg usually runs shark dive trips to California’s Farallon Islands, but was in the Bahamas with the company’s charter boat, R/V Tiburon. Seeing him tinkering with a tender and hoping he was mechanically inclined, we asked him for assistance with our dive compressor. After touring our boat and discovering that shark diving was a mutual passion, we learned that Tiburon was in the Bahamas for a shark dive!

After getting to know one another, Greg asked if we could host VIPs aboard Equinox and follow Tiburon to a shark encounter dive site a few hours north on the Little Bahamas Bank. Needless to say, we jumped at the chance since it meant we could go on the dive. We were more than delighted to find out that Greg’s VIPs were none other than award-wining underwater photographers Douglas Siefert and Ron and Valerie Taylor.
Both Doug and Greg were impressed with our boat’s layout and set-up, saying they weren’t used to traveling in such style. Their main concern was the comfort of the Taylors, who are now in their 70s. Our being avid divers may have provided the impetus for our meeting, but the fact that Equinox was set up so comfortably was probably key to our invitation.
Hosting the professionals created an opportunity to compare notes on dive equipment, photography techniques and pick up some tips. Ron Taylor was very minimalist in his approach, using a small underwater video camera inside a metal housing he crafted himself while Doug Seifert had a larger set-up comprising a digital camera inside a housing with twin strobe lights.
Weather conditions were less than optimal with periodic rain squalls strafing the area, but the seas remained flat. The dive site was tricky; a strong current was ripping through the fairly shallow depths, requiring divers to use more weight than usual. On the plus side, the shallow depths allowed for extensive bottom time without much worry about decompression sickness. Besides their meticulous preparations, what was so impressive to us was how long the photographers stayed under water. One can get very chilled in 75 degree water after 30-45 minutes, yet Ron Taylor and Doug stayed down for well over an hour at a time, dressed in layers and hoods. Their focus and intensity were inspiring.
The girls and I were curious about the Taylors’ experiences and full of questions, which Valerie graciously answered. She told us of amazing shark encounters around Fiji and the South Pacific. This segued into stories about how things have changed regarding conservation of the oceans. Back in the late 1960s, they were breath-holding spearfishing champions in Australia. By the 1970s, they were using scuba and truly saw the damage wrought by spearfishing. They worked to bring about a ban on spearfishing while using breathing apparatus. It was quite controversial at the time, but their background and expertise gave them credence, ultimately ensuring a successful campaign. They are responsible for getting several marine reserves established, along with several species of marine life protected.
Sharks hold the Taylors’ focus and fascination. As a result of their personal observations and experiences with sharks of all kinds, they believe that sharks are not a threat to humans. Because of their films and Valerie’s many letters to Australian fisheries officials, the Taylors were largely responsible for grey nurse sharks becoming the first protected shark species in the world in 1984, followed by efforts for great white sharks, which received protection in Australia in 1997.
This shark dive experience was unique; precisely what we’d dared to dream Equinox could provide when we were outfitting her! Unlike commercial shark dives using frozen chum balls, Tiburon supplied “bait bones” on a shallow site with an open, white sandy bottom. This allowed for calmer, better photographic opportunities, and ,because the sharks couldn’t get at the chum inside the bones, they stayed around much longer, circling about as we dove and photographed among them. My Ron absolutely loves to see sharks; having such choice subjects circling around for so long was nirvana. We’re now very vocal in promoting ecologically aware scuba practices. The Taylors have proved through their many years of diving and documentaries that no conservation effort is wasted.

Give me a damn break. This was disgusting. Absolutely putrid. Um, helllllooooo? Um, hi? You little children play professional hockey. Sounds kinda cool when you think about it. How about you actually play the game. And try. Just try.

What the hell happened during this long layoff to make the Sharks play like a beer league team? They allowed three, THREE shorthanded goals. Two of them were on the same power play!

Nobody wanted to play, everyone played with jocks on their heads. Turnover after turnover, fail after fail. If there was any doubt left about our defense, those were put to rest. From now on, if anyone tells you the Sharks defense is good, go ahead and tell them to remove their secret Ducks jersey or to go watch the NBA.

What a joke. Jason Demers played his worst game of his career. Dan Boyle felt like playing with an injured foot because this was a big game. He did end up scoring very late in the game, but it’s refreshing to know he waited 56 minutes to do something with his life. He finished with a -4 rating.

Also joining Pimple — I mean Boyle — with a -4 rating were Thornton and Dany Heatley. For all the great stuff they’ve done recently, this game shat all over it. Good gracious, it was atrocious. They must be stunned to know you have to play defense too. What a concept!

Manny Malhotra does his best pylon impression (From NHL.com)

With five minutes left to go in the second period, the shots were 26-7 Chicago. What in the blue hell is that about? Seven shots after 35 minutes? I could get eight shots on net by doing cartwheels the whole time.

At that time it was 4-0 and after the fourth, Ryane Clowe took it upon his messed-up-nose self to take a penalty. Brilliant. What a smart hockey player. Take a penalty and you show those bad guys you can beat them even with a man down. Ryane Clown. Blow me up a balloon while you make a joke of yourself.

Let’s go ahead and give credit to Chicago. They came in with an exceptional gameplan and their coach Joel Quenneville and perfected it. Sharks coach Todd McClellan was lost in the Tao of Joel’s stache.

This is the Blackhawks’ eighth win in a row and they’re no signs of slowing down.

LOL WUT?

Frazer McLaren managed a +1 for the Sharks. Ha ha ha ha.

AHL

Five AHL players were in the lineup: Jamie McGinn, Benn Ferriero, McLaren, Steven Zalewski and Derek Joslin. Certainly looked like Worcester was playing.

Kent friggin’ Huskins…

…was on the power play. Yes. On the power play and caused the turnover that led to a Chicago goal. Don’t EVER put that guy on the PP again.

Optimism Corner

Hit-O-Meter: SJ 26 CHI 17

Faceoff Percentage: SJ 56% CHI 44%

The game ended.

Other Dreadful Notes

The Sharks’ injuries are plaguing them so badly now. Rob Blake, Devin Setoguchi, Jody Shelley, Brad Staubitz, Torrey Mitchell need to come back.

Per NHL rules, the Sharks are required to play again. They play Edmonton in Edmonton, Friday.

For all those who take up the under sea challenge there is always the distinct possibility that you

For all those who take up the under sea challenge there is always the distinct possibility that you will one day encounter a shark. Sharks are the top of the food chain in the oceans and seas and they have been around for millions of years and adapted to the conditions over time.

As a good introduction and part of diver training should be more about interacting with sea creatures and to understand not to damage their environment. The are many places within the UK and Europe where you can visit large Aquarium tanks and take part in shark encounters.

The large aquariums tanks have mainly Nurse sharks and Sand tiger type sharks. The nurse sharks are the ones that like to sit on the bottom and not move, unless of course you wave a nice piece of squid at them and they take that and eat it quite quickly.

The sand tiger shark has lots of sticking out sharp teeth and look fairly aggressive but are mainly docile and they are night feeders so when most people see them in aquariums they seem to be cruising and not feeding.

As a Diver I think, as part of the essential training should be to do one of these shark dives if you intend to go diving in seas and oceans. Developing a good understanding and relaxed attitude and knowing how to respect sharks will prove a benefit for when you meet one in the open sea.

Having taken people into a shark tank and developing a diver awareness that these creatures can and will get close to you and training them not to panic but to back away and give the shark space is very good training.

When I was out in the red sea diving in Ras Mohamed the national park, there are lots of good coral reefs and drop offs and out past the drop offs the larger sharks can often be seen. We took a group of novice divers and got the to take a aquarium dive before they went really helped.

The group had some encounters both on day and night dives of shark activity ranging from seeing blue sharks and white tip reef sharks and the whole group had a better understanding and backed off and behave in a calm manner so the training of the aquarium tank made the job of supervising dives a lot easier.

By having a relaxed nature within the company of sharks, they can sense the nervous tones given off by being panicked in the water so eliminating this has proven to me that I feel safer taking groups into areas where the larger sharks may be without compromising too much safety.

Shark dives and encounters are things you never forget if it’s seeing a white tip feeding a night and coming out of the black depths near you. To seeing the larger silky sharks defending their territory by making S shapes in the water a definite time to back off as they seem to only do this before striking.

Sharks will always be in the depths and divers need to consider doing an aquarium dive just to get the edge of fear out from them so they can go off to explore the depths in oceans and seas with a little bit of understanding.

What a day for basketball and hockey! It doesn’t look like there are any NBA games I can play

What a day for basketball and hockey! It doesn’t look like there are any NBA games I can play straight but I still have a few teasers to do.

Hockey, on the otherhand, has produced quite a few nice plays, but the moneyline is a little too weak for some of them to actually be playable. I don’t go less than -150.

By the way, the NHL game you can watch for free tonight is Chicago Blackhawks vs San Jose Sharks. It should be a good game. Just click on that link once the game starts and you should see a “watch live” button somewhere.

Also, this is going to be a quick pick day again as I am too busy to write out the full details. And I’m putting my O/U picks on hiatus until I find a good system for that.

First, my NBA picks:

DEN VS MIN; DEN -4.5 (bought 4)

NJ VS POR; POR -11.5 (bought 1)

GS VS SA; GS +17.5 (bought 4)

NY VS SAC; SAC +2.5 (bought 7)

I played Portland as a straight wager with a 1 point buy. I also included the Blazers in a few teasers, which included the other teams:

4pt teaser: POR -8.5, DEN -4.5, GS -17.5

7pt teaser: POR -5.5, DEN -1.5, GS -20.5

7pt teaser: SAC +2.5, DEN -1.5, GS -20.5

And for the NHL games, I just did a 3-team parlay as that makes the most sense. Why bet straight on a bunch of -200 teams when you can combine them to give you a 3-to-1 payout? Normally it’s not quite that good of a payout, I don’t think. I’m pretty sure sportsbook.com is doing some Thanksgiving promotion on parlays.

Parlay:

MON vs PIT

CAR vs ANA

TOR vs TB

There were others that showed up as strong games but since I’m just getting into the NHL again and this system is so new I didn’t want to get greedy. I’ll call them on here, but just know I didn’t bet on these.

PHI vs NYI

OTT vs NJ

BUF vs WAS

STL vs DAL

NAS vs COL

PHO vs CAL

Last night, my husband and I enjoyed the zany antics and fun music of “Shark Tale” on DVD. Geared to older kids, the movie is still too mature for kiddo.

Vegetarian kids will love that Lenny the Shark (Jack Black) shares their outlook on life, and all kids can benefit from this movie’s message about the importance of being true to yourself and accepting those you love.

You may want to talk to your kids about how this movie challenges stereotypes (with a vegetarian Great White shark) and how it perpetuates them (portraying “Italian-American” sharks as mobsters). Also, consider visiting PETA’s FishingHurts.com to get the inside scoop on what shark behavior featured in the film is cartoon fiction and what’s based on reality.

One of my favorite quotes from 30 Rock is from the first season…Tracy Jordan’s advice to

One of my favorite quotes from 30 Rock is from the first season…Tracy Jordan’s advice to “live every week like it’s shark week.” Sharks have always been interesting to me, and obviously interesting to other people judging by movies like Jaws.
Planet Shark is a new traveling exhibit making it’s debut at the Georgia Aquarium. While there are no actual live sharks present in it, there’s plenty of cool features from fossilized shark poop to interesting shark facts.
Planet Shark will make you think differently about sharks…or so I would hope. We’re made to believe they are absolutely the scariest thing in the water, yet it’s not like they attack people that often. In fact, you’re 200 times more likely to be killed by a deer than a shark. Who’s the cuter animal now?
One of my favorite things was these touch screens that told you about all these different features of sharks, like how they can sense the electrical impulses of things around them. It also provided information on different kinds of sharks, so meet my new favorite… the glow-in-the dark, submarine biting cookiecutter shark :

(not cute at all but what awesome name and a sneaky little thing, right?)
Also super cool was the “frozen in time” mako shark and bluefin tuna fish…who weighs in at nearly 700 pounds.
In the totally creepy aspect of things, there is a display showcasing things that have been bitten by sharks. There’s a bitten and destroyed surfboard that looks like to a shark, it’s like breaking some styrofoam. Oh, there’s also some pictures of a guy who needed 400 stitches after being attacked. Don’t check that out right after you eat anything.
There is an additional cost to check out the Planet Shark exhibit, but it is well worth the money: with general admission to the aquarium it’s $31.50 for adults, $26.50 for seniors (65+), and $23.50 for children.
Check out the Georgia Aquarium’s website or twitter account, as well as Planet Shark’s for more information! Planet Shark is only in town for a limited time…not sure when it moves on to complete its world tour, but definitely check it out soon.

And since no pictures are allowed inside the exhibit, here are some pictures from elsewhere in the aquarium (I’ll have more on Flickr eventually.)

…no, that’s not a mistake in the headline…after doing a quick tot-up of the scores and scorers from the weekend’s internationals, I came up with the following table:

<col span="1" width="487"></col>

Leinster 31 (Horgan: Try; Kearney: Try; O’Driscoll: Try; Sexton: 5xCon, 2xPen)

Bulls 20 (du Preez: Try; Olivier: Try; Steyne: 2xPen, 2xCon)

Llanelli 18 (Jones: Try, 3xCon, 2xPen)

Atletico de Rosario 16 (Rodriguez: Try, Con, 3xPen)

Toulouse 15 (Clerc: Try; Jauzion: Try, Dusautoir: Try)

Crusaders 14 (Carter: 1xCon, 4xPen)

Bayonne 10 ( Gower: Pen, Con, Fall: Try)

Ospreys 10 (Williams: 2xTry)

Montpellier 10 (Trinh-Duc: 2xTry)

Bourgoin 10 (Parra: 5xCon)

Munster 10 (Earls: 2xTry)

Edinburgh 9 (Godman: 2xPen; Paterson: 1xDG)

Cardiff Blues 6 (Halfpenny: 2xPen)

Bath 6 (Little: 2xPen)

Toulon 6 (Wilkinson: 2xPen)

Calvisano 5 (Garcia: Try)

Western Province 5 (Habana: Try)

Lions 5 (Fourie: Try)

Aukland 5 (Tekori: Try)

Stade Francais 5 (Szarzewski: Try)

Highlanders 5 (Cowan: Try)

Western Force 5 (Cross: Try)

Brumbies 3 (Giteau: Pen)

Sharks 2 (Pienaar: Con)

Interesting reading, particularly on a weekend where Wales, South Africa and France played similarly ‘easy’ matches to Ireland, though it pains me to point out that Leinster players once again failed to score four tries, as a winning bonus point still evades the first XV this season.

Unlike Rebecca and I, Trent and Narelle have photographed not only in the same location, but in the very same spot, sometimes even taking their photographs just minutes apart, as their TWO LOOKS column below explains. To read more about these two Australian photographers –– and to see more of their lyrical images –– click on the links at the end of this posting.––Alex Webb

Trent took this picture while we were travelling around Australia, living out of the back of our 4WD. We were in Fremantle, Western Australia. It was a 40°C day (104°F ) in the middle of a week-long heat wave and like most Australians –– and especially those living in a tent –– we headed for the beach. At the time I was literally immersed in my project Watercolours. I had spent three days photographing in the ocean, hanging around in deep sea. Strangely, during most of this time I had had to be forced into the water. Normally totally at home in the water, I couldn’t shake that ’sharky’ feeling. After three days of Trent’s urging me back in the water and convincing me not to worry, I finally said that’s enough.

Not long after, a loud wail screamed over the beach. The siren sounds –– not unlike those signalling an air raid –– but on an Australian beach no one looks up at the sky. Within seconds the crowded water was empty, the beach now lined with people looking seaward, searching for the telltale shadow. And there was the shark –– all five metres of it –– swimming up and down the beach, oblivious of the commotion it had caused.

When I first saw this picture of Trent’s I was devastated –– in a friendly rival kind of way. I wanted it. It was such a fantastic unusual view of the beach. I had also attempted to capture the strange sight of hundreds of people looking out to an empty sea, and, although I was yet to see my transparencies, I knew I would have nothing as strong in colour. His black and white image conjures up those chilling, historical images of unknowing spectators watching atomic test explosions, their shielded faces lit by a mesmerising, blasting light.

This photograph, which went on to become an important part of his Minutes to Midnight series, is a classic example how Trent approaches his work. The image, while standing alone as a documentary photograph, has become something quite different. It now also represents a dark episode in our history and seen together with the rest of Minutes to Midnight it becomes an apocalyptic chapter out of this epic imaginary story about Australia. He has used symbolism and a joint memory to take it to another level. It is something that Trent does with maddening regularity –– but it always amazes me.––Narelle Autio

ON NARELLE AUTIO’S PHOTOGRAPH:

This photograph of Narelle’s is one of my favourites from her Watercolours series. It has all the elements of herself and her photography in it: Her trademark use of colour and light, her optimistic outlook, and her painterly approach.

For three days we returned to this beach in Fremantle, Western Australia. Out past the breakers on Cottesloe beach is a floating buoy. It is sizable enough to hold three or four people –– that is, if you have the arm strength to haul yourself up. I remember for two days Narelle continually swimming out to the buoy and photographing the swimmers throwing themselves off and plunging in. However, on the third day after swimming out, she turned around and came back to shore. I asked why. It was, after all, the reason we had continued to return to this same beach. She said she didn’t feel comfortable and had that “sharky” feeling. (I had swum out to the buoy myself the previous day and had also encountered that same sharky feeling. It was that sort of place.)

Regardless of the fact that a five-metre shark did manage to close the beach less than an hour later, I am very glad she did decide to come back to shore. Because otherwise she would never have taken this picture (above). Yes, there was the other small fact that she could have been eaten by a shark. But what is more important when you take a frame like this?

I also remember being in our two-man tent at a caravan park further up the west coast, when her processed transparencies arrived back from the East Coast. I remember coming to this sleeve of negs and my eye immediately going to this frame. I think I said it to her then: “You won’t beat this frame on this trip –– and neither will I.”

Of all the amazing photographs she has taken at the beach and under the water, I still come back to this frame as the one that truly represents her work. If you look at both photographs we took on the same day, maybe only several minutes apart, it gives a pretty good indication of our personalities and the way we look at the world. And it shows how two photographers can be at the same place at the same time, but the resulting photographs can have completely contrasting emotions.

Oh, and by the way, several swimmers did get stranded standing on the buoy. The whole beach watched as they waited to be rescued by the coast guard as the shark circled nearby. As one man tried to mount the rail of the boat, he slipped and fell into the water. I have never seen someone swim so fast in my entire life. The ensuing thrashing and panic was incredible as he tried to haul himself back on to the buoy. It really was like a real life scene from the movie Jaws. ––Trent Parke

Dear Warriors!!!

As some of you might know, our last campaign against the national
health food chain by the name of Nutrition House turned out to be a
bigger success than any of us could imagine. They agreed to remove all
shark products and convinced one of Canada’s largest manufacturers of
shark products to cease production. We are now ready to start campaign
against GNC: – General Nutrition Centers.- a huge shark cartilage and
shark products’ seller for useless cures. Please, please, copy/paste
the whole page letter (at the bottom is a copy of the original response
from Nutrition House and Holista Health Inc, important!!) OR if you
feel like it, modify the letter, just SEND it and cross-post, share,
forward to all your contacts on myspace, Facebook, and Twitter who
possibly would help stop the extinction of sharks from our oceans!!!
GNC is a worldwide, international nutrition franchise responsible for
millions of sharks’ cruel death for their products.

Please copy the letter to GNC below and paste it into your e-mail program. aim at their main office e-mail

SAMPLE LETTER:

GNC-General Nutrition Centers Inc.

Dear GNC,

I am concerned to see that you have shark cartilage products for sale
(Natural Brand™ Shark Cartilage 180), and wondered whether you are
aware of the problems facing shark populations worldwide? Sharks have
been on the planet for over 400 million years, and as top predators
they play an important role in our marine ecosystems. Sharks are
slow-growing, late to mature, and do not reproduce often – this means
that shark populations are particularly vulnerable to overfishing and
recover slowly, if at all. Humans kill 100 million sharks a year and
for what?

shark fins – for a tasteless bowl of soup

shark teeth – for jewelry

shark jaws – for tourist souvenirs

shark cartilage – capsules and powders for phony medicinal cures

shark liver oil – for cosmetics/skin care

Consequently, shark populations are declining rapidly due to the
immense overfishing and longlining pressure exerted on them. One third
of European shark populations are considered Threatened (Critically
Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable) under IUCN Red List criteria.

I understand that shark cartilage is commonly procured as a by-product
of shark fisheries. However, all commercial products provide added
incentive for unsustainable shark fisheries, and serve to boost the
value of dead sharks rather than encourage the value of live sharks.
Although the Shark Trust supports full utilisation of sharks landed,
unsustainable shark fishing is a threat to shark populations worldwide,
and the sale of products from such fisheries threatens to deplete
vulnerable species.

Shark cartilage products are commonly produced using cartilage from the
Spiny Dogfish (Squalus acanthias) or Blue Shark (Prionace glauca). The
Spiny Dogfish is listed in the 2006 IUCN Red List assessment as
globally Vulnerable (i.e. facing a high risk of extinction in the
wild), with North Atlantic, North Pacific and South American stocks all
listed in a threat category (Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically
Endangered). Until recently this species was among the most abundant
shark species in the world, but has been heavily exploited in poorly
regulated fisheries that often target pregnant females. The 2006 IUCN
Red List assessment listed the Northeast Atlantic population of the
Blue Shark as Vulnerable. This species is highly migratory, and it is
likely that the entire Atlantic population of Blue Sharks is under
threat. Blue Sharks are among the most heavily fished sharks in the
world, and are often caught as bycatch.

Although shark cartilage may be a popular supplement, the market for
such products is unsustainable while cartilage is procured from
endangered species, and continued sale of these products contributes to
the decline of shark populations globally. Furthermore, there have to
date been no rigorous clinical trials providing evidence of the
efficacy of commercial shark cartilage supplements in treating
conditions such as arthritis and cancer. A serious health problem with
eating or using shark products is the Methyl Mercury that it contains.
Mercury that is known to cause significant health issues including
pregnant women and children. Methyl Mercury is due to pollution of our
oceans and works its way up through the ecosystem chain and makes it to
the top predators being the Shark, Tuna, etc. The concentration of
methyl mercury increases with the sharks since they live long lives.
This concentration is said to be 10 to 100 times the legal limit
allowed for human consumption.

I strongly urge you to consider removing shark cartilage products from
your stores, and to explain to your customers why you are taking this
decision, as public awareness of this issue is essential to improving
shark conservation worldwide.

Here is the response from two nationwide companies that have realized
their error and effect on our oceans’s eco system by selling shark
products:

Nutrition House Response

After hundreds of our members and internet friends contacted them from
around the world voicing their strong disapproval of the sales of any
shark products:

Dear Shark Shepherd Supporters

We are writing in response to your blog posting and subsequent numerous
messages regarding Shark Cartilage. Nutrition House takes its
responsibilities to the environment seriously. We have been working
with www.SharkWater.com and www.sharktrust.org, as you suggested, to get a better sense of the threats to the shark population and the impact of shark finning.

Although we have been assured by our suppliers that the brands of shark
products we supply have been ethically harvested, we have come to the
conclusion that any harvesting of sharks at this time creates a
potential for ecological harm and thus we have sent a request and
notification to all of the Nutrition House stores with a request for
them to stop selling this product. We are hoping that once stores move
their stock they will comply and support or message. We have been in
contact with the manufacturers of this product are happy to announce
that Natural Factors the leading manufacturer of natural health
products in Canada has also been reviewing this product and their
ecological concerns with it. They have made the decision to stop
manufacturing this product as well.

Nutrition house has always prided itself on leading the industry in an
ethical and responsible manner. We also strive to meet the health needs
and well being of our customers and our environment.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. Through education and working together we will reach the end goal.

I wish you the best in your campaign

Nutrition House

After hundreds of our members and internet friends contacted them from
around the world voicing their strong disapproval of the sales of any
shark products:

The Response From Holista Health Inc Is As Follows

Holista Health Inc. serves a loyal and ever-growing population of health-conscious individuals

who are looking for natural ways to maintain and enhance their lives.

At Holista, we are concerned with the health and well-being of our customers and our

environment. Over the last several years, we have been reviewing more closely the ecological

impact of using Shark Cartilage as a nutritional supplement. We have long been aware of the

poaching of sharks for their fins alone and continue to oppose this practice. Although the supply

of our Shark Cartilage products does not come from sharks harvested in this manner, we have

come to the conclusion that any harvesting of sharks creates a potential for ecological harm. In

addition, we have consulted with various conservation groups who have provided us with

valuable insight around this critical issue.

It is for this reason that Holista has ceased purchasing Shark Cartilage raw materials and will no

longer be producing Shark Cartilage products. It is our hope that this decision will contribute to

the necessary global moratorium required on the harvesting of sharks.

Cartilage supplements are used primarily by individuals suffering from the pain and debilitating

effects of osteoarthritis. We are confident that the scientific evidence¹ supports the use of

cartilage and chondroitin supplements in the maintenance of joint health and will continue to

provide our customers with natural, effective products from alternate sources.

Holista is dedicated to providing the best products to our customers. We look forward to your

continued support.

Vegas is obviously known for their casinos, which I had a great time in quite a few of them, but I had just as much fun checking out some of the other things Vegas is known for. I didn’t have a clue what exactly before the trip happened, but thanks to About.com I had a little bit of guidance.

Mandalay Bay
The first (and only) thing that always pops into my mind about Mandalay Bay are the boxing matches that go on over there. I’m not much of a boxing fanatic, but I’ve become one with the greatness of Manny Pacquiao, a fellow Filipino man. It’s a beautiful casino from outside to inside.

We checked out the Shark Reef Aquarium inside, and it was a pretty neat experience. The main draw is the giant size aquarium that engulfs you, that is filled with many different types of fish and obviously, sharks. Although I would never do this, partly because i’d be scared as heck to do it, but for a giant rate you can actually gear up and swim inside with the sharks. No thanks, not that daring.

Minus 5

Also in Mandalay Bay is probably my favorite experience while out in Vegas. It’s such a different concept because a place this cold shouldn’t be out in the desert, but it was a sweet thing to check out. I wish I was able to to take pictures, but because it is literally below freezing in there we weren’t allowed to take in anything electronic inside the bar. But it was pretty awesome to be dressed up in a thick winter coat and given gloves upon entering. Everything is made up of ice carvings, from the walls to the bar and to the cups for your alcohol. The bartender was really awesome and encouraged us to dance to keep from freezing our buns off. To motivate us, she happily danced beside us. That was nice.

M&M’s World
4 floors of chocolaty goodness. The smell of chocolate emanates throughout the entire store which I’m sure just a quarter of the aroma comes from the giant size dispensers of single color M&M’s the store carries on the 2nd floor.

And with the calls of free samples on the top floor made it so much easier to cruise through and check out all the cool merchandise and models this place has.

One thing that I thought was the best was not so much the chocolate, but the orange M&M character. The way they drew him out and the type of personality that he must carry makes him to be a befuddled, confused and kinda worrisome. In some ways he reminds me of me…or just Butters from South Park.

Quite the methodical win for the Sharks as they defeated the Anaheim Ducks 3-2. The Sharks are two-for-two against Anaheim this season, and while this game wasn’t as dominating as the first, the result was the same: a win. Also remember this is the second time San Jose beat Anaheim at Anaheim.

It was KISS night in Anaheim. I can’t think of a stupider promotion. I was forcefed two makeup artists during the Ducks broadcast. I will say the makeup was more fun to look at than listening to the commentators.

There wasn’t anything flashy about this game; it was all hard work and determination. Both teams made mistakes — of course a few Sharks giveaways in their own zone stick out to me. But I’ve come to expect that, unfortunately, from the Sharks.

Douglas Murray was bad tonight. Don’t let the +1 rating fool you. He had so many giveaways and positioning errors — one of them led directly to a goal ten seconds later. He also took a penalty late in the second period, and the Ducks converted 11 seconds later. Dan Boyle was just a step behind tonight and couldn’t cover for Murray’s mistakes.

Frazer McLaren and George Parros get busy. (From SJSHARKS.com)

Things were frisky early with a quick fight out of the gates: Frazer McLaren vs. George Parros. Frazer won the first half of the fight, and Parros won the second half. Draw. Good to see Frazer making an impact with such a minute amount of ice time.

It looked to be another boring, close game after a scoreless first period. But the red lights were tiring out from four goals in the second. Ryane Clowe got on the board with a shot from the point. It’s his second straight goal from the point. Not the place you usually see him scoring from, but hey, whatever works.

Dany Heatley scored to keep his title of goal-scoring leader (18). It came off a Joe Thornton shot and rebound. I don’t think Anaheim was expecting Joe to shoot after his passes last game. That’s probably why the play worked.

But Anaheim hung in there, leaving the second period tied at 2-2.

The third period resembled the first, and I started getting deja vu; the game looked a lot like the playoff series between these two from last year. The difference? The Sharks were the ones who willed a goal out of themselves. Heater played passer and found Thornton coming up the side. Jumbo pocketed the puck perfectly to the far side to put the Sharks up for good.

People questioned coach Todd McClellan’s move to keep Evgeni Nabokov in goal for back-to-back games. He didn’t look as sharp as he usually does, but he was competent enough to earn the W. He’ll get a long rest because the Sharks won’t play again until Wednesday.

Other Notes

Hit-O-Meter: SJ 20 ANA 19; Scott Nichol (4) and Joe Thornton (3) led the team.

Every Sharks player who was on the ice for an Anaheim goal redeemed themselves; No Shark had a negative +/-.

The Sharks battle the Blackhawks, Wednesday at HP Pavilion.

Quite the suhweeeet performance by the Sharks in their 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Sha

Quite the suhweeeet performance by the Sharks in their 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Sharks withstood the punches and counterpunches, both figuratively and literally, and sealed the win.

The man of the match was Dany Heatley who notched his ninth career hat trick and second with the Sharks. Winning co-man of the match was Joe Thornton who received the primary assist on all three Heater goals and added a fourth assist.

It was just an unbelievable game all around. The Flyers haven’t beaten the Sharks since 2000, but the games are always entertaining. They bring out the best in both teams, and I hope this is a Stanley Cup Finals preview.

Everything for the Sharks worked tonight: the even strength forecheck, the power play, the penalty kill. All exceptional. Well, I may be wrong about everything working. The defensive zone giveaways were enough to give fans and coach Todd McClellan migraines. If it weren’t for those, it would be a 6-0 victory.

Philly sure didn’t like Sharks ice. They saw it as a slip-and-slide, with public enemy #1 Chris Pronger as the main slip-and-slider. One of his slips ended up being a Heater goal. It really was home-ice advantage tonight.

Heatley’s hat trick was the EPS Trifecta (trademark pending). Even strength, power play and shorthanded goals. Two were carbon-copies. Joe would receive the puck in what looked like a perfect shooting opportunity, but it he would stop right to the side of the crease, wait, wait, wait for the defenseman to make a move, then BAM! Pass to Heater’s stick and it’s as easy as an Ovechkin toothless smile.

Dany Heatley notched his second hat trick as a Shark (From SJSHARKS.com)

San Jose now has its top two lines set in stone for at least the next month. McClellan saw some great play between Heatley-Thornton-Marleau last game and decided to start them tonight. That choice proved epic as every time they took the ice, something good happened. Remember when everyone shook in fear from the Marleau-Thornton-Cheechoo line? Multiply that by 10,000.

The second line was Malhotra-Pavelski-Clowe and they meshed talent with will. This line will probably be broken up since Devin Setoguchi will come back from injury. Move Clowe to left wing and put Seto on the right. While Malhotra did net a goal tonight, he also netted a goal for the Flyers; for some reason he tried to handle the puck in the crease during a scramble, and instead of just knocking it out, he thought it best to backhand it first — bad idea.

The Sharks still haven’t lost in regulation at home either. Oh, how sweet the confines of HP Pavillion are.

Friday Night Fights

Frazer McLaren, up from Worcester took on Daniel Carcillo and McMan-handled him. I this kid is better than Staubitz and should get a few more looks. And he will because Staubitz is out for a couple weeks with an injury. I wish it were under better circumstances, but whatever the situation, cease your opportunity F-Mac.

Wait…Who? And he’s fighting who?

That’s right, my friends. Marc-Edouard Vlasic showed a nasty side tonight. Don’t know if someone stole this pickles from the pickle jar, but he was angry tonight. He dropped the gloves for the first time in his career with Daniel Briere and earned the win. Vlasic was the only one to throw a punch, and he also took Briere down. Vlasic also was featured in some scrums. I really hope this continues; I don’t want another Thornton situation where a guy plays better angry, but chooses to be angry once every leap year.

Other Notes

Hit-O-Meter: SJ 25 PHI 26; Jed Ortmeyer (6) and Douglas Murray (5) led the team.

With the amazing play of the top two lines, the fourth line saw as much action as a young Bill Gates. McLaren played for two minutes, Benn Ferriero played four and Logan Couture played six. That’s fine with me if I can get first-line production like this every game.

The Sharks travel to Anaheim to face the Ducks. In their first meeting, the second game of the Sharks’ season, San Jose pummeled Anaheim 4-1.
