Hey, it’s been awhile. After a brief hiatus, due in large part to family and professional obligations, and in small part to the lack of interesting news, we’re back in the saddle again. Time to catch up!

Shaun Toub spoke with Thomas Attila Lewis on the red carpet at the Emmy’s briefly about his experience working on the film. He believes it’s ‘an incredible film’ and ‘visually unbelievable.’ Toub went on to describe how the world is ‘full of mystique’ with a really complex protagonist.

Cliff Curtis (Fire Lord Ozai) spoke on The Last Airbender with CraveOnline.

Cliff Curtis: How was shooting The Last Airbender?

CraveOnline: It was wonderful. It was really great and it’s also great that I’m going to be able to work the two. I’m not giving up film. I’m just doing another job that happens to be on television.

Cliff Curtis: Are you playing a character from the animated series?

CraveOnline: Yes, I am. I’m playing fire lord Ozai.

Cliff Curtis: Did you take anything from the animated form?

CraveOnline: I’ve not watched it. I didn’t want to watch the animated form because I knew the director, M. Night, was going to depart from that.

Cliff Curtis: You must be dealing with a lot of pyrotechnics. How do you deal with that?

CraveOnline: Fire, well, that’s a good spin. Is there anything in particular about fire? Yeah, just don’t touch it. I don’t know, don’t touch it, you’ll get burned. In particular, I’m so in the world of making a movie. They have safety meetings before anything is done and all the safety people gather around, so I’m so protected from the fire, I don’t even get near it.

Cliff Curtis: Do you have a visceral feeling when the explosions go off?

CraveOnline: No, because both of my characters, whether it’s Rabbit or the fire lord, actually are very comfortable in those situations. So I pretty much just ignore it.

Cliff Curtis: Both this show and the Airbender movies, this will be the first time you’ve played the same character more than once. Is that a different approach?

CraveOnline: I’m yet to discover that. I don’t really know. You’re right, I haven’t done that so I’m about to figure out what that’s like. I think the big difference so far that I’ve discovered is that in a film, it’s very contained. So we know before going in to make the film what the film’s going to be, and then when the film is completed, we find out what it is. Whereas television, as far as I’m discovering, it evolves. As the show evolves, everything’s fluid. Characters can disappear tomorrow as you see in the pilot.

Cliff Curtis: What is M. Night like on the set?

CraveOnline: He’s very deliberate and predetermined, extremely. He’s planned everything. Storyboarded to the frame.

Cliff Curtis: So you’ve seen the movie already pretty much?

CraveOnline: No, he doesn’t show those to you unless he’s trying to explain what he wants in a scene, so I only get a portion of that, that’s relevant to what we’re shooting.

Suspense auteur M. Night Shyamalan takes a break from crafting original screenplays to tell this tale of a 12-year-old boy (Noah Ringer) who provides the last hope for restoring harmony to a land consumed by chaos. In a world balanced on the four nations of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air, people known as the Waterbenders, Earthbenders, Firebenders, and Airbenders have mastered their native elements. Though the masters can each manipulate their native elements, the only one with the power to manipulate all four elements is a young boy known as the Avatar. When the Avatar subsequently appears to die while still mastering his powers, the Fire nation launches a global war with the ultimate goal of global domination. One hundred years later, two teens discover that the Avatar and his flying bison have in fact been locked in suspended animation. Upon being freed from his prison, the Avatar embarks on an arduous quest to restore harmony among the four war-ravaged nations.

Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction.    Last night, the first teaser for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, based on the popular anime-style cartoon on the Nickelodeon Channel, debuted on “Entertainment Tonight” and now, you can watch it here or see it in front of Michael Bay’  Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen starting tonight.
   Last week, ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! had a chance to visit the set of the production which had roughly two more weeks of shooting in Shyamalan’s hometown of Philadelphia, most of it taking place in an enormous warehouse that’s been turned into as soundstage as well as other sets being built within an even larger naval yard warehouse. We even saw one amazing set that’s reportedly the largest indoor set on the East Coast, taking up the entire expanse of an airplane hanger.
   We can’t say too much more about what we saw, because the movie doesn’t come out for over a year and we want to save some surprises, though it was one of the better set visits we had done. We basically had a chance to talk to just about everyone involved with the movie, including Shyamalan himself, producer Frank Marshall, and most of the cast including Noah Ringer, who plays Aang the titular “Last Airbender,” actor Dev Patel from the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire who plays Prince Zuko, as well as Jackson Rathbone and Nicola Peltz, appearing as brother and sister Sokka and Katara. We also spoke with Shaun Toub (Crash, The Kite Runner), who plays Zuko’s Uncle Iroh, while Aasif Mandvi (“The Daily Show”) is Commander Zhao, the closest the film comes to an antagonist. We also spoke with production designer Philip Messina, a regular Steven Soderbergh collaborator, about how they came up with some of the amazing sets we saw (as well as the ones they built on location in Greenland), as well as costume designer Judianna Makovsky.
   The film is the first of a planned trilogy, each one centering around a different element, as Aang, Sokka, Katara and Appa, Aang’s giant six-legged flying bison creature, travel this mythical world in hopes of stopping the war that’s brewing between the four tribes as the Fire Nation advances on its neighbors for land. Aang is an Airbender, thought to be the Avatar who can stop the war and maintain peace by learning the powers of the other tribes. Patel’s Zuko is a prince of the Fire Nation who’s been banished, so he wants to get his hands on Aang to prove himself and earn back his father’s respect.
   Obviously, it’s going to be a big movie filled with FX-driven martial arts action, but more importantly, the world and mythology created in Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko’s animated series is giving everyone involved an opportunity to find or redefine themselves.

It’s been well-documented that Shyamalan’s daughters were the ones who introduced him to the cartoon, and since he’d been interested in doing a franchise that would allow him to tell a story over two or three movies, but also one that would allow him to “say something about himself” where his “accent could be complimentary to the piece,” it seemed like a perfect fit.
   To realize the fantastic mythology from the series, Shyamalan assembled an extremely diverse cast with the biggest name actor being one making only his second film appearance! Coming off the huge success of “Slumdog,” Dev Patel has the daunting task of taking on a role that’s far more filled with anger and angst than anything he’s done previously, even admitting he wanted to do something as different from the Danny Boyle Oscar winner as possible. With even less film experience, 12-year-old Noah Ringer is making his film debut, coming from a martial arts background with a number of championships under his black belt; the eloquent young man was also a fan of the cartoon, which made him perfect for the role of Aang. Nicola Peltz and Jackson Rathbone (best known from the “Twilight” movies) will also have more of a chance to show their stuff as the two most important characters in Aang’s journey, two of the Southern Water Tribe who find the avatar encased in ice. (You can see from the teaser that Ringer looks just like Aang, but Rathbone’s personality is very similar to his character, too.)
   Everyone we spoke to had a lot of enlightening thoughts about how Night was bringing the magical characters and situations from the cartoon to life with a number of large-scale martial arts fight sequences that incorporate the powers used by the different characters. To be involved with such demanding scenes, the entire cast went through rigorous training to be able to take part in the martial arts and swordplay the film requires. Once they finish filming, there will be at least nine to ten months of FX work by Industrial Light and Magic, helmed by Pablo Helman (War of the Worlds).
   Unfortunately, Night doesn’t think they’ll have anything new to show at Comic-Con in San Diego next month, being that it’s in such close proximity to the premiere of the teaser trailer. Night wouldn’t even give us a hint of what to expect when we asked him, although he said that it was one long take that he filmed himself. Hopefully, we’ll be able to share more from the set of all that we had a chance to see, because it’s certainly going to be an exciting movie whether or not you’ve ever had a chance to watch the cartoon.
   The Last Airbender opens in theaters on July 2, 2010. Be sure to check out the newly-launched official website as well!

First of all, let me qualify this review by saying that I am a huge DC Comics nut. One need only look as far as my blog header to determine that. So the fact that a Marvel comic-to-film adaptation caught my eye was an achievement in itself. After seeing the trailer for Iron Man a few months ago, it did more than merely ‘catch my eye’; it actually made me excited for the film. If you haven’t seen it already, take some time to have a look:

What you can take away from that trailer, and what I ultimately took away from the film is this: a grounded plot and believable acting can sell an iron man, comic book films are supposed to be fun, and Robert Downey Jr. is a perfect fit for Tony Stark.

Downey Jr. portrays an utterly human Tony Stark in the Marvel tradition – conflicted and flawed, but ultimately likable. The billionaire industrialist, like his father before him, has built his entire fortune and empire on weapons manufacture and military technology. In the film’s opening scenes, you really get the impression that Stark believes in his company’s role in global stability. This all comes into conflict, though, after an explosive sales-pitch in the Middle-East, when Stark is grievously injured and captured in a terrorist firefight. Iron Man is really born in his prison-cave, long before the suit is built. Indeed, he is born almost out of necessity – Stark wakes up connected to a car battery – an electromagnet the only thing keeping shrapnel from his heart. But more than that, Stark is forced to confront the reality of his world [he's also forced at gunpoint to re-create his own missile, but that's another story]; a world in which his own weapons are proliferated for evil designs. His fellow prisoner Yinsen becomes his closest friend, who not only inspires him to be Iron Man, but also helps him build Iron Man. It feels as though Downey’s brought a lot of himself to the table: the slick, aging ‘rock star’ who yearns for release from the shallow trappings of wealth and fame. It’s almost ironic that Stark manages to fill that void by constructing a shell for himself.

Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. Tony Stark is Iron Man.

Iron Man is rich with themes and metaphors like these. The most obvious themes being those of financial, military, and creative power, and accountability for that power. In many ways Iron Man represents the America that it wants to be. On his first jaunt as the finished Iron Man, Stark ventures back to his place of capture to destroy his own weapons and take out the terrorists, without a single civilian casualty. It’s a pity that these excursions are few and far between, but that’s the price of the obligatory first-film-as-origin-story approach. Having said that, Iron Man features one of the better origin stories this side of Batman Begins, and it’s really necessary to sell us on the idea of one man having the mental, financial, and technological capacity to build such a complex suit of armour. Having witnessed the level of detail in the special effects, it really made me wonder how anyone could have believed in an Iron Man as early as the sixties. That’s more a testament to the film than a criticism of the source material.

As amazing as the special effects are, it’s the performance of the cast that really carries the plot. All of the major players (Downey Jr., Terence Howard, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, and Shaun Toub) serve as strong reference points with believable and well-rounded performances. Tony Stark is more than just a billionaire playboy, Pepper Potts is more than a love interest, James Rhodes is more than just a ‘token black guy’. You really get the impression that these characters are in it for the long haul, and there are a few gentle nods toward this notion. As I alluded to earlier, Robert Downey Jr. was the perfect choice to play Stark, winning us over with his wit and charm, and convincing us in those grim, life and death moments. Iron Man really has the right combination of comedy and mature content for a comic book film, and is reflective of the age and sensibilities of the comic readership. A majority of the laughs are dealt in the suit-testing phases. In these scenes, wealth and technology become his uncomfortable allies, and slowly we see him scorn the former for his Greater Purpose. Granted, this message can be a little hard to swallow with all the product placement (Iron Man would like to thank Burger King, Ford and Audi for their support), but it’s another day at the office for Showbiz.

In what I perceive as its central theme – Creativity vs. the Man – Iron Man takes more than a few stabs at big corporations. In Iron Man, we ultimately see Stark as the creative human being, and the Corporation as a perverter of creativity, and a thief of great ideas. When Iron Man faces off against his own technology in the final battle, he asserts his position as a responsible and accountable force in the world. Again, he is the America that America wants to be.

With spot-on characterisations and richness in theme, credit must go to the scriptwriting team for mining and distilling the wealth of the source material, and director Jon Favreau for handling the film with utmost respect for the character [it all comes back to using power responsibly, see?]. Iron Man brings home the gold, but it also keeps a few aces up its sleeve. If you’re a comics fan, you should have a fair idea of what to expect in the sequel, just don’t look too hard before you actually see the film.

When all is said and done, Iron Man stands tall as a great comic book film. It works both as an action film and a comic book story, denying the power of neither medium. Favreau, Downey and Company sell an iron man to a new audience, even to this DC Comics fan. Well done.

If it had been two movies, they would have been crazy great. As it is, it’s two movies, spliced together, without anything to unify them other than “themes.” They each have their own shapes, their own climaxes and resolutions, and they’re cut together based purely on the time of day in which the events take place without regard for the stories’ dramatic arcs. There’s some really great acting, but there’s also some Brendan Fraser and Sandra Bullock.

Aasif Mandvi will take on the role of the evil Fire Nation Commander Zhao.

The Dragon of the West has a face! Shaun Toub has been cast as the wise, kind, and powerful Uncle Iroh.

Cliff Curtis will portray Fire Lord Ozai!

Keong Sim has also been cast as a as yet unnamed Earthbending father.

Principal photography is set to begin mid-March 2009!

Honoring the 81st Annual Academy Awards, Main Event Red Carpet Lounge & Green Suite presented an exclusive Giving/Gifting/Oscars Pampering Suite held at Studio 944 benefiting spcaLA. Celebrities had the “suite” life as they were pampered throughout the whole event.

The lounge was quite the turn out as it pulled in over 400 people in just two days. I can see why the Main Event RedCarpet Lounge & Green Suite wrapped up so many people; luxurious beauty and spa cool eco-treatments such as organic mini-facials, makeup and lash applications, electrotherapy, and hair cutting/styling appointments were recieved. Celebrities were also able to enjoy their sweets and drinks with star-quality edibles such as Carrie Wiatt’s Diet Designs and IZZE signature cocktails!

Of course we cannot forget to mention the pleasure having a Pre-Oscars informal trunk fashion showing of haute couture gowns, celebrity jewelry, women’s designer shoes and handbags, men’s designer shoes and neckties, and a 3-D Lounge presented by Dream Factory Studios.

Even the celebrity’s pets received special Oscar pampering and gifts. Helping the prevention of animal cruelty, a silent auction of luxury items was held to benefit spcaLA.

Over all the Giving/Gifting/Oscar Pampering Suite was a successful celebration for the celebrities of the 81st Academy Awards. Main Event Red Carpet Lounge & Green Suite knew how to spoil Hollywood’s celebrities making sure they were prepared for the big day!
