You write a song about your girl..NO ONE CARES…The Best Rapper Alive writes a song about the Best Player in the Game…Well that is something that makes the kids run around, biting each other and screaming for ice cream….

Oh and yes Kobe is the best player in the game and the only puppet left in the Finals…..

Cool Song….But it got me to thinking if the best rapper alive can make a song about the best player in the game, what would the tracklist be like if the worst rappers in the game made a song for the worst players in the game…And as you already know, I got the first 4 singles to the soundtrack..Peep game.

The Mavs suck.

And by “suck” I mean they “are actually really awesome just terrible at adapting.” As a fan, I feel I’m entitled to not only this opinion but being able to yell at the TV when Dampier (the best center in the WNBA) is completely lost in the lane. Bring back Shawn Bradley. Or at the very least, not trade our draft picks and pick up a decent center. Maybe he’s just tired. Can you be tired of being black? I hope so because I would totally sign up on the black-list. I don’t think anyone that’s been blacklisted has ever come to any trouble.

In other news, it is raining which is an obvious ominous tone for me about to fail my exam tomorrow.

Man, tell me you witnessed this yesterday on sportscenter, Tracy McGrady dribbled past his defender (Luol Deng) and dunked directly on Chicago Bulls feared bigman Tyrus Thomas. This is one of those dunks that makes you feel bad for Tyrus when it’s over and say Ooooooooh. Just for good measure I had to add this classic dunk from the 2002 all-star game, hot damn.

Last week I had my friend Jeni call me and ask me, “Do you know a black guy named Derion on the Jazz ?”

Correcting his name I answered, “Do you mean Deron Williams, my favorite player on the Jazz? Yes, I know who he is”.

Jeni said, “Well, I am taking pictures for a fundraiser with him and Kyle something… I forgot his last name but he is white. So I need someone to hold my bags. Would you like to come along? Its free.

[Parker's thoughts on how he should answer this.]

(How does she not know who Kyle Korver is? I mean come on!!! I like the Jazz but enough to hold bags? I should think this through. I could go fulfill a childhood dream or I could do something productive…like homework… go to the gym… speed date on facebook… etc.)

Then Jeni says, “Oh yeah, there is free food too.”

(DONE DEAL!!! SAY YES!!! SAY YES!!!)

“Yes. I mean, heck yes!!! I would love to go!”

The night with Deron Williams and Kyle Korver was one of the coolest nights ever. It will be something I tell my kids about. Seriously, this was so cool. Here are the picture to prove it (not photoshopped).

D-will did not smile but I’m sure he was sick of a 101 pictures. I look like a fat kid who found cake.

This was me freaking out that I was actually in the Jazz locker room.

Dear videogaming world

Unlimited turbo here I come!

We have a president most likely to be the coolest unlockable ever to be involved in the history of a otherwise semi-forgettable game, and you sit awake making “lara croft: pukk’ds yo temple bikini beach party”/”zelda happy sundown fishy bang bang”/”halo 9: we just blew’d up that thur space”. Some of you out there arent 20somethings who earned their chops playing 16bit. But for those of you who are (oh hey my target audience walked in the room, been looking for you nameless faceless things for awhile!) im sure you remembered NBA JAM, or in my case, NBA JAM TOURNAMENT EDITION (we asked for more jam, they were happily there to pump)

I found the TE was the way to go with the JAM’s, the whole concept of actually being able to put numbers to your abilities was cool, and I thought it was fairly funny to see how hurt you were was cleanly told by how high the number is next to “injured”.

McNair INJURED: 96 (hmmm, should I put in otis thorpe...)

But I digress, the game is awesome, ill save the messy cleanup/cleanup inducing process for another post. But the one feature they had, was our first black president himself, William Jefferson Clinton. Yup with a cheat code of “Hold start and enter letter C using button A, enter letter I, hold start again and enter letter C using button B” You have the leader of the free world from when I first became a cognizant member of society (if your feeling frisky Hold start and enter letter H with A, let go of start and enter letter V, hold start and enter letter Y with button B that would make the dream team of Bill Clinton and Heavy D).

a cluch rating of over 20 im sure. But this is what makes the game RE-PLAYABLE, I really dont care for trying to beat the game over again just using Erick Murdock and Vin Baker, Ive already tried beating it while only taking shots as Delef Scrempf. But the degree of fun you can have with this game is challengng your friends to a hillary clinton-jazzy jeff vs frank thomas-will smith grudge match to see which brother in fresh will turn on eachother. Thats what I see happening with Obama, I really really hope that some fun but brainless game (aka the new NBA streetish thingy they have nowadays) picks him up as an unlockable character. I mean the whole flipping country is having fun analyzing his basketball skills, and to be honest he gives the nation a good waypost to measure themselves as basketball players. But by god, if you could have him as some unlockable character in a throway game, I along with many other sheeplike consumers may buy it as well. By god would it be sweet if Obama dunked on some pixilated blob, lets call it JJ Reddick, and just shouted YES WE CAN, followed by BOOOMSHSAKALAKAKA AS he takes his defensive pose ready to push someone over. Please video game developers of america make Barack Obama a unlockable character in your games, if just to make some quick coin. Please game developers of the free world, thik of the babies you would save from being born. Think of the blue state laughs and the red state snarls, and just please think of me.

Ok, so the Obama and basketball thing has been dissected from every possible angle – his cool

Ok, so the Obama and basketball thing has been dissected from every possible angle – his cool demeanour on the court, the “urban” nature of the game signaling a change to the ruling class of America, the fact that he’s willing to lead but also stand back and assist, how his jumper is solid and he won’t shy away from physical contact to get the rebound – it all serves to prove he has the court vision we need to take us out of recession and bring the troops back home. Or not. I’m not sure exactly why it’s a revelation, perhaps because basketball is such an every-man’s game, but we’ve all had our minds blown by seeing Obama spotting up for three (John Kerry is quietly crying right now as he carefully waxes his windsurf board). All the same, the next president likes to shoot hoops and at some point we need to come to terms with that.

But regardless of how much has been written about the subject, this article (already linked to by Freedarko) is a must read. Actually it’s the only thing you need to read about the subject. Not so much that it covers Obama’s complete relationship with the game, which it does beautifully, but that it is also captures the psychological nature of the pickup game – a very different beast to organised basketball. Here’s a quote:

“Pickup ballplayers don’t talk as much as golfers during a round, but they more quickly reach judgments about temperament and collaborative aptitude. And there’s the emotional containment that ballers learn to bring to the court, even if only to ensure that no one can sneak up behind you to see emotions… you didn’t want them to see. Asked the boxers-versus-briefs question, Obama gave the pitch-perfect pickup baller’s reply: “I don’t answer those humiliating questions, but whichever one it is, I look good in ‘em.”

Good stuff. America and the future is safe… that is, if we are invaded by aliens and our leaders are forced to play a game of basketball to decide the fate of the planet . Otherwise, it’s nice to know that Obama enjoys a good game, people are excited about basketball, and that it’s not windsurfing.

Speaking of pickup basketball, I was reminded of this excellent article in Slate , written back in 2005. I’m sure the comparisons could be updated, but Rip Hamilton is still “the guy who wears too much protective gear” and Shawn Bradley will always be “the guy who wants to play half-court”.

The “Stormin Mormin” was drafted number two overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1993 and that’s when his career went potential “Star” to becoming “Mr. Posterized”.

Australia's #1 Basketball Magazine. Before we launched this website, The Sport Count team wrote

Australia's #1 Basketball Magazine.

Before we launched this website, The Sport Count team wrote an obscure ‘zine (as they were called in the mid-90s) entitled The Ball News. Edited and published in a dank basement, the publication was filled with stunning analysis, lengthy thinkpieces, and Shawn Kemp dunk photos we’d ripped out of Sports Illustrated back issues.

Now, more than 15 years after we started The Ball News, we’ve decided to stroll down memory lane, taking a look at some of the keen observations and on point predictions we made in the mid-90s:

Notes From 1994-1995:

Stick to baseball, buddy.

- With two simple words — ‘I’m back’ — Michael Jordan fulfilled the wishes of a desperate basketball public, returning to the Bulls. Many, however, can’t shake the feeling the 31-year old legend has lost it. He’s shooting 40% for the season so far, and it’s difficult to imagine he’ll ever average 30 points again, let alone lead Chicago back to the promised land. Perhaps he should have stayed in the outfield, after all.

- 23-year old sophomore Isaiah Rider looks to be the kind of dependable franchise player you build around. His precocious maturity and modest lifestyle — famously modelled on the financially astute MC Hammer — ensure he’ll act as a rock for this Minnesota team. Ten years down the track, Rider will be a true veteran presence, offering insight and wisdom to the younger guys.

Bradley: Can only get better.

- After a rough rookie season filled with injuries, the Shawn Bradley gamble looks to have paid off. Sure, he still has some strength issues, but his defensive footwork in the low-post is stunning. Let’s just say we don’t expect to see Bradley posterised any time soon!

Also, are we the only ones who think Shawn looks like forgotten 80s star Anthony Michael Hall? Incidentally, we hope the rumours of Hall being attached to the upcoming Batman Forever are true. That movie is going to rule.

- Rookie phenom Grant Hill looks healthy and robust, especially his groin area. Indeed, the nagging injuries concerns that followed him into the league have been quickly forgotten. If we were the general manager of, say, Orlando, we’d feel totally comfortable and confident offering Hill a 6-year contract for max money, knowing we’ll get a good 82 games from him each year. Hill is to basketball what Jeff Buckley is to music: a sensational newcomer, guaranteed long-term success.

- Jesus, our basketball cards just keep going up in value. Safe as gold, these Ultra Fleer.

Notes From 1995-1996:

Forget basketball: will these two ever kiss?

- Michael Jordan has surprised many by playing as hot as Gillian Anderson, but the real story remains the Magic Johnson comeback. Sure, Earvin has packed it on, adding 40 odd pounds to his original playing weight, but he figures to be an unstoppable force down low. And with Magic drawing double teams in the low post, we’re set for a big campaign from bald-headed sharpshooter Anthony Peeler, a man many believe has MVP-level upside.

- Health freak Kemp yet again looks the goods, averaging 20 points and 11 boards at the All-Star break. See? Pays to be in a monogamous relationship.

- These Vancouver Grizzlies look good. Looks like the NBA has finally found a stable franchise up north. As for their prize rookie Bryant Reeves? Well, we figure he’s young. He’ll grow into his face soon enough, and Vancouver will soon be treated to the ‘Nash Bridges of the north.’

Notes From 1996-1997:

We made this 'animated .jpeg' for our Geocities site.

- The Lakers have mortgaged their title chances by inexplicably trading proven veteran Vlade Divac to Charlotte in exchange for an unheralded high school prospect from Philadelphia.

- Dennis Rodman has been suspended for 11 games, after kicking a cameraman. This moment of brutal violence and crazed bloodlust represents a new low in professional basketball history; only an all-in brawl featuring players beating up fans, and fans retaliating by throwing chairs and screaming horrific obscenities, could be worse. Unlikely that’ll happen.

- Critics of electrifying rookie Allen Iverson say he’s a thug and a criminal, a ghetto freak hellbent on bringing ‘hip-hop’ to the famously moral National Basketball Association. Frankly, we’re baffled by the attention he’s receiving; with the recent death of Tupac, hip-hop is totally dead, and the ‘tattoo craze’ Iverson has popularised seems unlikely to catch on.

This annual showcase of the best high school basketball talent in the United States featured 2 players from Indiana. The 2 players from Indiana were Damon Baily from Bedford North Lawrence, & Eric Montross from Indianapolis Lawrence North. They definitley were not out of place as their talent spoke volumes for the caliber of Indiana High School basketbqall. Other notable players involved in this event were: Shawn Bradley (7′6″ )from Utah (I was with him for week & never did get over his height), the 6′8″ kids did’nt seem so tall with 3 players on the teams over 7′. Shawn was a very good athlete who was also a baseball player
One other young man who was not only a great basketball player but a very “well rounded” person was Grant Hill, whose father(Calvin) had been an outstanding running back (by way of Yale) for the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL. Grant was a gifted musician, playing the piano & entertaining everyone in the hotel lobby! One of the most memorable moments of that week, was listening to basketball telecaster, Dick Vitale talk to the players behind closed doors. He talked about each player as if he was their father. His enthusiasm for the game is real as he was so sincere in talking to the olayers.

Dallas Dedicated is a blog which is, well, dedicated to Dallas sports. We’ve been following so

Dallas Dedicated is a blog which is, well, dedicated to Dallas sports. We’ve been following some of their excellent coverage of Charles Rhodes, who, as you should be well aware, was apart of the Mavs summer league squad, and by most accounts, impressed the Dallas brass with his ability. It remains to be seen if Rhodes will make the Mavericks squad, much less get a training camp invite. In any case, the guys at Dallas Dedicated agreed to be the latter part of a Q&A session about Rhodes, and another former Bulldog, and current Mav, Erick Dampier.

——————–

I’ve read where Charles Rhodes is likely to be invited to training camp, but is not a lock. What do you think?
I think that as long as he does not decide to go to Europe, he is a lock for camp. Hopefully he doesn’t chase that very enticing Euro. He has gone from being a forgotten and un-drafted rookie to a guy with a legitimate shot at being in the rotation on a title contending Dallas Mavericks team.

Does the presence of Brandon Bass (an SEC product out of LSU) hurt Rhodes’ chances? The Mavericks offered Bass and Jerry Stackhouse to Sacramento for Ron Artest, but the Kings chose to send Ronnie to another team in Texas, which will lead to my next question……
Bass and Rhodes are very similar, which in the long run could end up hurting one or the other–obviously at this point most likely Rhodes. But last season, the front line was very thin and another Bass-like player could do nothing but help. One thing that critics say hurts the Mavs team is that they do not have enough tough inside presence, which Charles Rhodes can definitely help provide.

What’s Bass’ trade value and are you willing to give him up? If it’s your opinion that the Mavs must make a move to get back to the NBA Finals, what would be a reasonably hypothetical dream trade scenario?
Obviously, if the right deal came about, we would have to part ways with Bass. He still has a lot of potential and could develop into a very good player, but he still will play behind Dirk. A strong two-guard with nice range would be about the only offer for Bass that could improve the team…especially if Rhodes proved he could take Bass’ spot.

Jason Kidd should be much better under Rick Carlisle–freedom to do what he does best: run the break. That should cover the one, three (Howard) and four (Dirk) spots. A move like Terry/Stackhouse and a reserve for someone like Corey Maggette or Monta Ellis would be solid. Ideally, an upcoming free agent after this season (LeBron, Wade, etc.) would be a finals-clinching pick up. Then the only weakness would be at the five. Good centers are a rare commodity, and if Diop and Damp can play strong together, then that would be an ideal squad. But, the fact alone that we offered Bass in a trade for Artest shows that the Mavericks organization thinks of him as expendable.

From watching Rhodes, what’s your opinion of his NBA-level strengths and weaknesses?
He shoots a very high percentage, and even has a pretty decent mid range jumper. Though he is relatively short for a power forward, he rebounds adequately, similar to Bass. His post defense has been impressive, but he is not a big shot blocker and can get in foul trouble quickly. His biggest improvement will need to be overall basketball IQ, which many rookies need work with. He is a very raw scorer, and can easily be molded into a power force. He has nothing but potential, which I know Rick Carlisle and the Mavs assistants could turn into more strengths.

James Singleton or Charles Rhodes: who do you pick? (factoring in Singleton’s guaranteed contract)
Charles Rhodes and James Singleton are too much alike to give both contracts too, especially when factoring in that Brandon Bass will already consume most of the backup power forward minutes. While Singleton’s contract is guaranteed, GM Donnie Nelson has already made it clear that buying out a player’s contract that is guaranteed is not out of the question. Also, Singleton is coming off major knee surgery and has had multiple shots at the NBA-level. Rhodes over Singleton easily.

The Mavs have another Mississippi State product in Erick Dampier, who led the Bulldogs to the Final Four in 1996. What do you like, and dislike about his game? Was signing him to a 7-year, $63 million contract in ‘04 a mistake? Is Erick Dampier a center the Mavs can win a championship with? And, are we looking at a time-share at center between Big Damp and the returned DeSagana Diop?
Dampier is an up and down player. He doesn’t have to score a lot of points, and gets a lot of buckets from working the offensive glass. When he wants to be, Damp is one of the best rebounders in the league, especially on the offensive end. Also, his scoring has improved since Jason Kidd’s arrival. However, he tends to get into early foul trouble too often and sometimes plays soft. While Dallas let Steve Nash go and used the money saved to sign Erick Dampier, his contract in ‘04 was not a mistake. He was coming off of a career year of (12 points and 12 rebounds per game in ‘03) and the Mavs had been lacking a good center for many years (see Shawn Bradley).

The way Dallas is most effective is a split between Damp and Diop. This eliminates the worry of foul trouble and they are able to play tougher defense. Together, when on their games, they can rival many centers in the league, and proved it in the ‘06 Finals run. Damp did not have any competition for minutes after Diop was traded, and having Diop back will motivate Damp to play and practice hard or else Diop becomes the starter. Not many teams have two legitimate centers, and I believe the Mavericks have that again with the signing of Diop.

——————–

And there it is….many thanks to the guys at Dallas Dedicated.

DRAFT DAY UPDATE: The Sport Count read this one right. We’re gonna stand by what we said on this: White is Not Right! I’m looking at YOU, Chris Wallace and Donnie Walsh!

Mounting speculation that the Griz are in lust with Love is simply disturbing.

Even more disturbing is that the good folk over at RealGM.com’s Mock Draft also have the big lug going at Number 5. (Normally you’d attribute this to rampant speculation, but this is the NBA Draft: Where Chris Wallace Happens).

There is a simple rule in the lottery, one which doesn’t take a convoluted Chris Reina or John Hollinger formula to figure out, and it goes something like this: Don’t Select White Players In The Top Five!

It’s just something that you don’t do, like putting your underwear on the outside of your pants or signing Kwame Brown.

Don’t believe me? Fine. Here is a list of just a few white players to go in the top five in the last 20 years, with a run down on their respective careers.

Posted by: James

Keith Van Horn, 2nd Overall, 1997: Still being coveted by teams 11 years into a career is great thing. Just not when the words ‘expiring’ and ‘contract’ are in the mix.

Shaun Bradley, 2nd Overall, 1993: The only individual award Bradley even came close to was ‘world’s biggest Richie Cunningham’. Unfortunately, Glenn Robinson beat him to that as well.

(As a side note, this is the perfect excuse to include a link to the Top Ten Dunks On Shawn Bradley. Do you get the soundtrack?).

Darko Milicic, 2nd Overall, 2003: Fish + Barrel = Bad Blogging.

Rik Smits, 2nd Overall, 1988: As a relatively young NBA fan, I’m still gobsmacked that Smits went 2nd overall. It makes no sense. What part of ‘7-Foot Dutchman’ doesn’t spell ‘Draft Day Kryptonite’?

It’s like selecting Raef LaFrentz in the top five… hang on a sec.

Raef LaFrentz, 3rd Overall, 1998: You know you’ve blown your draft when five years down the track you’re packaging your 3rd overall with Chris Mills and Jiri Welsh for Tony Delk and Antoine Walker.

The funniest thing about this selection is this little tidbit: players selected after Raef include #4 Antawn Jamison, #5 Vince Carter, #9 Dirk Nowitzki, and #10 Paul Pierce.

Nikoloz Tskitishvili, 5th Overall 2002: Apparently, you spell BUST with 4 I’s and kick it off with 3 consonants. A solid pick, if you’re into 2.9 career ppg.

Jason Kidd, 2nd Overall 1995: Okay, sure, on face value the guy almost averages a Quad Double (points, rebounds, dimes, bruises on close family members) and took the Nets to two NBA Finals.

He’s also played on 5 teams throughout his NBA career, and been a catalyst for unrest in almost all those franchises.

On the flip side we’ve got Mike Miller, Chris Laettner and a couple of other serviceable players I’ll admit — but I would rather gamble on someone with an attitude problem (read: gang ties) than whitey.

What are your thoughts?

Joe Budden’s “Pump It Up [Remix]” features Jay-Z, and maybe the most NBA name drops in one song, besides songs about the NBA (“NBA” by Joe Budden for example).
