Już się kiedyś przyznałam, że jak mnie rzadko seriale wciągają, tak jednemu się udało. “Life” rządził moim życiem w okolicach pierwszosezonowych, potem lekko znudził, aż na koniec elegancko dojebał. Gdyby nie tragiczny brak czasu, oglądałabym finałowy odcinek na loopie, zwłaszcza że muzycznie przez cały czas dawał radę – serio, T.A.T.U. w życiu nie brzmiało (brzmiały?) tak dobrze!

Zazwyczaj jednak słychać raczej coś takiego:

Nnnno. Fani takiego jednego zespołu, co przyjeżdża w sierpniu promować swój boski wpływ na cofanie się efektu cieplarnianego mogą ich kojarzyć z wyjątkowo nieudanego koweru “No Surprises”. Ale może tak jak ja macie obsesję na punkcie kolejnych wersji “Toxic”? To voila.

Przy czym inne rzeczy – jak tak sobie luźno klikam po YT – kopią zdecydowanie mocniej, tyle że nie są kowerami Toxic, więc ich tu nie będzie. W dodatku zakładam się sama ze sobą, że gdzieś w okolicy ktoś o panu Lee i jego orkiestrze pisał, a mnie się nie chciało/przegapiłam i teraz mi głupio, bo dopiero ta podła telewizja…

P.S. – Na pewno brakuje wam również wieści z mojego burzliwego no-life’u. Otóż znalazłam mieszkanie, czyli możecie się skupić na szukaniu mi bogatego męża.

It’s time once again for the annual rundown of my favorite music of 2008. If you’re not used to this feature, it’s not “my favorite cds of the year,” or anything of the sort. I listen to so little new music, that would be pointless.

This is instead, “songs I overplayed this year, no matter how old.” And some are really, really old. So, here we go, month to month (roughly, as my memory is slipping a little).

And let’s all cross our fingers that these posts stay up – with all these links, I’m probably pushing my luck.

Winter:
Leonard Cohen – Famous Blue Raincoat
I just discovered him in a major way early this year.
Pink Martini – Lilly
It took me a couple of listens more than it probably should have to feel sure that they really were talking about a dog.

New group, old sound. Their Hits the Hits cd includes covers like the above, done in a ’60s jazz style.

Not a month or much more after I heard the original for the first time, I heard Coulton’s version. I prefer it.

Spring:
The Coasters – Down In Mexico
Most recently from the Grindhouse Death Proof soundtrack. Also possibly the earwormiest song I heard this year.
KT Tunstall – I Want You Back
Jackson 5 cover. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a version of this song I didn’t love.

The Wild Wild West Theme
I’ve been Netflixing the entire series this year. I watched reruns of it on Sunday afternoons with Dad when I was a kid and loved the show then, and I’m loving it much more now. A Western, mildly spy-themed, proto-steampunk show with a definite ’60s aesthetic and great sets, costuming and music. Also, my childhood adoration of Artemus Gordon has come raging back.

Summer:
I spent a lot of time this summer driving around listening to a double mix cd I made of ’70s am summer music, so there wasn’t much time for lots of other music. From that mix cd, here is
Jay Ferguson – Thunder Island
and King Harvest – Dancing In the Moonlight
Besides that, there was also Dean Martin’s theme to the Matt Helm movies, Not the Marrying Kind, and The Carpenters’ Superstar. (I finally got to see Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story and this got stuck in my head.)
The second half of the year is for tomorrow.

Miles Of Styles marks the seventh release from Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra, which is primarily the work of Shawn Lee, American born and London based multi-instrumentalist. According to Ubiquity Records press for the album, Miles Of Styles “is the soundtrack to places Lee has been and would like to visit. ” The titles of the mostly instrumental tracks give you an idea of the globetrotting nature of the 20 tracks included here: “Brazilian Bubble,” “Prague Rock,” “Italy 73,” “Heist In Helsinki,” “San Diego” and “Greekout.” The Ping Pong Orchestra project was originally aimed at establishing a musical library, though by now, with Christmas and a hits cover album among its recent releases, the project now seems more like a vehicle for Lee’s wildly prolific and diverse creative output. If you are new to the Ping Pong Orchestra, I envy you because you have seven albums of music to enjoy from a modern Carl Stalling, who blends rock, soul, funk, pop and world music influences into heady, groovy and often surprising mixtures. (He also has a couple of albums out as Shawn Lee, including Soul Visa and Monkey Boy.) If you don’t know Lee by name, you no doubt know his music, as it’s been featured on the soundtracks of scores of movies and TV shows, as well as the video game Bully. Miles Of Styles is as good a place as any to start discovering the work of this true musical virtuoso.

Estava jo tan tranquil sentint un disc molt guapet i easy listening que m’he baixat d’una indie singer-songwriter israeliana [Yael Naim] quan m’ha xocat comprovar que també té una versió del Toxic de la Britney Spears! I és que en els últims mesos ha sigut la cançó més versionejada que ha arribat a les meues mans: primer va ser la de Mark Ronson (feat. Tiggers), després la de Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra i ara esta.
