It’s Monday. It’s 5pm. And that’s when Emily Brinnand digs through the sounds of the North. Each week she picks one band that she thinks should have you sitting up and taking notice. Number Six: Your New Antique

The deep, baritone vocals of frontman Jay Williams make Your New Antique instantly captivating. Your ears become enthralled and addicted to their dark, melancholic sound and gloomy lyrics.

Jay, Rob, Chris and Ben started making music together in June last year. Since then they’ve self-released an album, impressed The Animal Farm label, who they’re now signed to, and released two remarkable singles. Jay and Rob actually meet six years ago at the end of university but after a few lineup changes and swapping instruments they crossed paths with Ben and Chris to complete Your New Antique.

From Left to Right – Ben Wallbanks, Chris Ruffoni, Jay Williams, Rob Crisp – Your New Antique (photo by © 2012 Adam Malcolm)

After listening to their song ‘Love’ I got an ache in my stomach. I could hear the raw emotion in Jay’s words and it physically affected me. The song takes you into Jay’s mind. He often writes about “parts of [his] life that have been a bit dark” and thinks songs are better when “you know what the singer is talking about or you can hear what the singer is feeling.” This isn’t to say Jay is always walking around feeling miserable, he isn’t. It seems to be a therapeutic experience for him to write about sad experiences. He actually wants his music to make people feel happier: “I think you can relate a lot more to negative feelings, and in a funny sort of way it can make you feel better, knowing someone else goes through what you do.” Jay explains that the song is about a close friend that vanished rather quickly from his life. That sickening frustration of losing someone you really care about comes across in his deep distinctive delivery.

(Listen to ‘Love’ by Your New Antique above)

The band draw influence from a collection of great musicians; Radiohead, Joy Division, The Smiths, Mogwai and Alkaline Trio, so it’s no surprise Your New Antique are creating some beautiful dark pop records. As a singer Jay takes inspiration from The National and Interpol and he loves what Ian Curtis did in Joy Division.

As a band “there’s absolutely nothing in this world we love more than writing and performing.” Well, bassist Chris certainly has the qualifications to prove that’s true after getting a distinction in his Masters degree studying electro-acoustic music. He even started playing the bass just so he could join the band. Now that’s dedication. But Jay may have beaten him to be crowned the most committed member of the band, after playing a full gig with a broken rib. What makes it worse is that Chris did it but “swears he can’t remember.” The band had been recording all day and decided to have a celebratory night out in Leeds. Jay explains that after “a ridiculous amount of booze we ended up in a club and danced liked complete idiots for the majority of the night. Around fifteen minutes before kicking out time I noticed one of our mates sitting at the table on his own so I walked over to make sure he could still speak and see straight. The next thing I know I felt someone jump on my back, my balance wasn’t all it could be so I fell forwards with my ribs banging into the table in front of me.” After two weeks off work and dosing up on pain killers Jay managed to play their single launch gig. “It was very painful but worth every second. I also got Chris to carry my equipment for the next couple of months, which was an added bonus to the injury!”

The band is very happy right now apart from fighting over who’s wearing the best coat. Let’s hope no one breaks any bones this time. Their next single ‘Open Your Eyes’ is coming out in March 2013 and they’ll also be releasing an EP full of new material. Their ultimate dream is “to play at the legendary Glastonbury festival and go full time with the music”, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens. In the meantime I recommend you have a listen.

Here’s a live session I recorded with Blackburn singer songwriter Alex Johnson for Amazing Radio. He’s currently making music in Sheffield while he’s at Uni there. I caught up with him just before Tramlines festival. This song, ‘Birds and Bees’, is absolutely gorgeous and really shows off how amazing he is. The song’s not out yet but will be released on his next EP. It was such a treat to hear Alex perform in such an intimate setting. I remember first discovering Alex and playing him on my radio show Mixtape, he just blew me away. Take a look for yourself and share it with all your friends.

Here is the piece of work I contributed to Bloc Projects’ 10th birthday fundraiser.

Bloc Assembly is an occasional event, each with a common theme or medium. I was involved in Bloc Assembly #1 Live Art and Bloc Assembly #11 Last Requests, and a number of artists who had previously been involved were invited to submit a postcard-sized work for a blind sale, with the proceeds going to support Bloc Projects.

Bloc Assembly #13: Birthday

I like group shows and there are always a few pleasant surprises. All the works were priced at £10 regardless of their intrinsic value. The one I bought is by Hondartza Fraga, and I think I got a bargain, although I was tempted by others too.
hondartzafraga.com

Like most small arts organisations these days, Bloc Projects is short of funding and needs everything it can get. I recently signed up to be an Associate Member for £15 per year. I told them that’s not enough. I prefer Access Space’s model where you can sign up for either £1, £3 or £10 per month (or any other amount, actually), but Bloc expressed a concern that membership does not give enough value. I disagree, for some people it’s about getting something but for most its about giving something back. Also, what about the 10 years of free shows? So far.

A few pounds a month, or a year, needs lots of people to contribute to make a difference. You can sign up to be an Associate Member of Bloc Projects here, and a Friend of Access Space here, or a Friend of community radio station Sheffield Live! here.

To hell with Cameron’s “Big Society”. Contrary to Thatcher’s denial, we already have a society, and a society that does not require it be branded or sloganised in order to establish its credibility.

I say put your money where your mouth is, and my mouth says “Happy birthday Bloc (and here’s a tenner).”

It’s been a while since the Top 3 tracks of the week.

It’s a weekly feature on my radio show Mixtape, which is every Tuesday evening on Sheffield Live from 6pm.

Let me know what you think of my choices.

Here’s this week TOP 3…

1. Bon Iver – ‘Calgary’ (Adi Carter Remix)

Last week we played Adi Carter’s remix of ‘Calgary’ by Bon Iver. Adi’s reworking of Bon Iver’s delicate vocals and melodies works really well because he eases us into the track. At first we hear the familiar tone of indie folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. Then 2 minutes in there’s an injection of electronic bass drum, revealing the track’s more electronic nature. Adi successfully adds to an already beautiful song, retaining it’s laid back feel but introducing an upbeat element you might not expect to hear from the American folk band.

Listen to the remix here

2. Wet Nuns – ‘Why You So Cold’

The Sheffield duo Alexis and Rob are making what they call ‘blues punk’ and it’s taken Sheffield by storm already. The Yorkshire boys have just come back from Leeds Festival, where they conquered the BBC Introducing Stage with their gritty guitar and heavy drums. They’ll be coming onto Mixtape next week. This song could be the soundtrack to a modern Western. I love their mixture of country rock n roll, punk and blues – I’d like them to start selling it in a bottle.

3. The Lion Works – ‘Last Night On Earth’

This Sheffield alternative rock band have just released their new EP ‘Last Night On Earth’. The vocalist Billy Bankes says the title track is his favourite. What I like is how well thought out the atmospheric guitar riffs are and it’s haunting vocals. The song has a sinister undertone compared to the other tracks on the EP with heavier guitars. On the band’s Facebook page they say they’re influenced by The Smiths and Morrissey, which certainly comes through. But the band are not replicating a classic sound from the 80s. They’re developing something new. Catch them on Mixtape tomorrow and hear their sound for yourself.

I’m trying to connect with Sheffieldlive.org at 8.59 on Wednesday morning to hear the first airing of Max Munday’s Mouthpiece. Son and heir promises a programme ‘Full to the wireless gills with politics, interviews and incredible music!’ and he opens with The Cat Empire’s Chariot Song, an inspiring and uplifting Melbourne ska epic about the power of music, friendship and community.

Saturday: Ruskin House, home to Croydon’s Trade Union and Labour Movement, is the setting for my dad’s 90th birthday party. Actually, it’s in the low wooden hall out the back, which is fine once it’s warmed up and we’ve got the bunting up. There’s been lots of gear coming in, as at least three Mundays and friends are determined to honour Jim by inflicting our various musics on him. Whether that’s his idea of a good time is neither here nor there. My mum had been a good pub-style pianist, and dad had (has) a lusty voice, and there’s a family tradition of showing-off, anyway. There are four generations here, from Dad and his sister Elsie through to newly-arrived baby Maddox from Shanghai, (and everyone wants to hold the smiley buddha-boy). Old friends/relatives have come from miles away, and dad is thrilled.

Due to the lack of regular bassist – his car frozen – Max is asked to dep (as if he needed asking), and brother Alan and newly-depped band launch into their brand of Americana, and I can’t resist jumping up and adding my strangled harmonies to ‘Up on Cripple Creek’. Then I stuff my face. More acts follow, each involving at least one Munday, and dad listens indulgently to the other Munday generations. Music, friendship, and community.

The band: Greg Smith, Josh Reddy, Dave Gash, Thom Davison

Arkham Karvers released their latest EP ‘The Prices They Pay’ on Tiny Teeth Records, co-owned by the ex Little Man Tate frontman Jon Windle. They’ve been back in the studio to record what could be a new single for next year and they’ve supported ‘Sonic Boom Six’.

In between the band gigging, recording and working hard, I caught up with Arkham Karvers’ lead singer and guitarist, Dave Gash. He told me all about their latest EP, what it’s like working with Jon Windle, the band’s influences and hopes for the future.

Interviewer: EB Interviewee: Dave Gash – DG

EB: What does the EP mean for the band?

DG: It’s a very very good opportunity for us and it just means that more and more people will be able to get our music as its available to almost everyone, which is what we want. And we’re just really happy and thankful for those guys putting their faith in us and our music.

EB: What are your hopes for the EP release?

DG: Grammy? A local reviewer’s ‘recognition’ at an awards ceremony? Maybe not…We just want people to hear it and share it.

EB: So how can people get hold of it?

DG: There’s loads of places these days! iTunes is definitely one and if you buy it off there you get an extra track ‘Traveller’s Rest’ which is a blinder! You can also get it on Amazon, selected record shops and HMV’s around the country and on our website www.arkhamkarvers.com.

EB: Where do you see the band in a year’s time?

DG: Hopefully we’ll still be out there. Towards Easter we hope to be out on tour so hopefully doing more tours and eventually having the album done!

EB: How is this EP different to the first?

The songs on this EP are ‘more mature’

DG: It’s different in loads of ways. The overall quality of the recording is so noticeable and that’s thanks to the amazing work of Alan Smyth and Dave Sanderson at 2fly studios in Sheffield. The songs are generally better written than the first EP and more mature, well I think they are anyway, we just seem to have stepped up in so many ways whether that’s our skills, or having the addition of Josh our amazing drummer who wasn’t with us when we did ‘The Big Slick’. You tell me!

Latest EP includes family photographs

EB: What influences the band?

DG: We’re not shy of our influences and we have never denied who we look up to. For me personally I was raised listening to a lot of soul and Motown, but then at a very early age started listening to more alternative music. My first album was…believe it or not ‘Nevermind’ by Nirvana. But the main influence for me has to be your more rootsy influenced music like Bedouin Soundclash and Fat Freddy’s Drop, then obviously the 80’s reggae stuff like The Police and The Clash, that’s also what Thom our bassist has said is a big influence to him. Greg brings the brit pop side to our stuff and Josh well he has always said that Travis Barker from Blink is his main influence and I guess you can probably take some of that from our tunes…Who hasn’t been listening to blink since they were 11? Greg hasn’t actually!

EB: What’s your fondest musical memory?

DG: There’s a few. Playing the main stage of the Academy Sheffield is always a great memory. Some of our favourite bands have played that stage, that was a great one. Also hearing our finished EP was just a great moment.

EB: What’s been the best gig you’ve done?

DG: I can probably speak for all of the band here so the best gig we’ve ever done was at my old high school. We went in one lunchtime and played a gig for whoever wanted to listen. There had to be 300+ kids there, and they went absolutely mental for us so that was definitely a stand out moment.

Dave's best memory - playing at O2 Academy

EB: How would you describe the sound of your music?

DG: It really takes all of our influences. There is an obvious off-beat style that flows throughout all of our songs, and then there’s indie vibes coming from the guitars, but also some folk and some pop stuff that comes through on certain tracks. We always like to say that you can take what you want from our band…interpret it as you will.

Someone so influential backing us helps

EB: How do you get your music out there in such a competitive market?

EB: Does working with people like Jon Windle help out?

DG: Jon has helped us out without a doubt. And obviously having someone so influential backing our band can always help us. But we try and promote our band as best we can.

We do this mainly through Facebook and YouTube where we do our own online mini series that’s actually not so mini anymore…The Karver Chronicles which is just collections of videos we make between gigs and recording etc that I edit together and put online for our followers to see.

EB: What’s the first song you learnt?

DG: There was two riffs that I learnt on guitar the Christmas day I got it when I was about 8 and they where ‘Smoke on the Water’ by Deep Purple like most people and ‘Song 2’ by Blur.

Arkham Karvers with Jon Windle (centre) backstage

EB: Who is your musical inspiration?

DG: Bob Marley, The Beatles, Bedouin Soundclash, Little Man Tate, Milburn, Blur, Oasis, Damien Rice, The Police…there are so many.

EB: How does the writing process work?

DG: I usually come up with a basic idea and then bring it into the practice room and then we sort of jam it and see what happens from there. But some songs just come from a single idea while we are all together.

EB: Are you writing any new material at the moment?

DG: We always try to have new stuff in the pipeline. We’ll usually play a new tune at a gig and see how it goes down and then take it from there.

EB: What will the next EP sound like?

Our songs come from our experiences

DG: It really depends on how we’re feeling around that time…our songs come mainly from experiences from either us or our friends, films we watch or places we go. So it really just depends…wait and see.

EB: How do you feel when you perform?

DG: Warm

EB: What would you say to aspiring musicians?

DG: All I can say is that any band especially us needs to keep gigging and getting their names out there.

Tom, Jack and Dave (photo by Aiden Wadsworth)

Sheffield band The Summer War, often called the English Blink 182, dropped into Mixtape for a chat and an acoustic set. After having a browse on their Facebook Page and discovering this band is ‘some sexy guys playing sexy music’ we were excited.

Tom, Dave and Jack are passionate about creating a ‘fusion’ of old school pop-punk sounds with the new. They have self-recorded and produced their first EP and are almost half way through their second.

The band expresses a love and admiration for the legendary pop-punk band Blink 182 but they don’t want to just copy what has come before. Tom says

“we obviously want to stand out a bit, be a little bit original at least we’ll try.”

Jack, the drummer and apparently the ‘only talented one in the band’, again according to the boys Facebook page, tells us how their new stuff is a lot more “complex” to their first EP. They are incorporating new timings, styles and beat downs to produce something that is more thought out, mature and unique.

Tom, Jack and Dave (photo by Aiden Wadswort

The band takes full advantage of the power social media provides. After gaining a significant following on Tumblr the band decided it was time to land on Facebook. As in their own words it’s “difficult to get out there”, Tom, Dave and Jack decided to set up two Facebook accounts. With their Friend Account they connect with their fans and thank them personally for supporting them and liking their music. While on their Band Page (which you must go and ‘Like’) they share their music for fans to download and listen to for free.

Their tactics on Facebook are not just to gain a larger fan base, although the number of ‘likes’ is growing by the day, the trio use humour to draw you in. If you don’t believe me just go to their page…

Grow a mo, save a bro

When they’re not making music, jokes or friends on Facebook the trio are busy fundraising for this month’s Movember. During November each year, Movember encourages men to grow moustaches, aiming to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. It is fantastic that the boys are actively fundraising for this cause. But they do admit that it’ll be hard for them to grow much facial hair.

If you’d like to support this cause then click here.

Movember raises money for men suffering of cancer (photo by Howard Lake)

The Summer War promises to release their second EP by Christmas this year and are going to be working with a producer this time round. The band produced their first EP together in Jack’s bedroom so it’s sure to be a little different. But the band are excited to get in the studio and have already written “4.2 songs” according to Tom.

“not afraid to tell each other what we think”

The band love coming together to write their music and the process is collaborative. They each bring an idea to the table. Dave says each of them “add their our own thing to it”.

This band come across very focused, together and determined to create a new sound of pop-punk. Jack says they’re “not afraid to tell each other what we think” of each other’s ideas. So if something is bad the band don’t just keep quiet. Honesty remains the best policy in this band.

After hearing The Summer War play their acoustic set live in our studio Mixtape would love to see the band produce an acoustic EP.

Hear their live set

Ending the show with their new track ‘Big Ideas and Bigger Plans’ really shows Tom, Dave and Jack are looking forward to the future of the band and getting their music out there on an even bigger scale. We wish them great success and definitely will get them back for a chat when their second EP comes out. In the meantime we wish them well with their Movember mission.

If you want to check out the band then go to their Facebook page. Highly recommended by Mixtape Sheffield Live
