OK well one week into my self-imposed eating healthy month, I am failing and not just a little.
As you may remember last week I challenged myself to start eating 5-10 servings of fruits and veggies a day, this week we’ll see what I have been eating, and how I plan on changing things so I am getting 5-10.

Last Thursday I ate well, Subway for dinner (6-inch veggie sub) and an apple, Friday was a spinach/tomato sandwich and an apple for lunch and dinner was homemade soup (lots of veggies) and a spinach salad. Saturday was OK too, I had a Caesar salad for lunch and dinner was bacon and eggs and an apple for desert. After that things started to go downhill.

After work on Sunday I stopped at the supermarket and bought ice cream. Chocolate ice cream, 2L of it. I didn’t really eat lunch, just an apple while I was at work. Dinner was a bacon, spinach and tomato sandwich… and chocolate ice cream.

Monday was also a spinach and tomato sandwich for lunch… and then dinner. I had one piece of bacon and then made chocolate/almond biscotti and ate ice cream. It was a LOT of chocolate for one night. Tuesday back to spinach and tomato, dinner was an apple (I got called into work and didn’t have a chance to grab a proper meal… I had some toast when I got home, and one of the trainers bought me a chocolate bar because she’s awesome like that. Yesterday was chilli from the school cafeteria (gross, but warm) and then a HUGE Caesar salad for dinner (like… it was huge, probably 5 servings of veggies in one salad)
I had one huge tomato and a bag of spinach, total cost $1.89 for both that I have been eating for the last… week. I finally finished the tomato today (or will once I have eaten lunch) and I still have spinach in the fridge.

There was maybe one day I got 5 servings of veggies (yesterday) the rest, I was in the 2 or 3, maybe 4. One thing that must change is the intense amount of chocolate consumed, which will, because I can’t really afford to buy any more (although I still have ice cream left), honestly I usually don’t eat that much chocolate, it was just a weird week. School has been tedious lately, and work has been frustrating (on Tuesday a lady spent 15 minutes yelling at me about how she was pissed off about her contract, in the first 30 seconds of the conversation we determined there was nothing I could do for her, but alas the screaming went on for another 14.5 minutes… my ear was very unpleased with this) so I blame those two factors on my lack of thinking more about what I was eating.

I’m headed home for the weekend and I am going to hit up our local veggie place there, it’s pretty much all local (except the pineapple) and is a great local business that we like to support so I’ll get some more apples, and who knows what else! Hopefully I can turn this week into a more vegetable filled one. We’ll see how it goes. Recipes I should try, suggestions, let me know below!

With Christmas quickly approaching Disney/Pixar along with Mattel have got their Christmas CARS release out and about at Toys R Us, Disney Stores and at Target. The Holiday CARS include Snow Day Sally, Holiday Spirit Sheriff, Holiday Hot Shot Lightning McQueen, Decked Out Doc Hudson, and Christmas Crusier Ramone. Target secured a 6 pack box set of all the above CARS but the 6th is the DEAL BREAKER MUST HAVE!

i found an interview in which bradford cox explains how he wrote sheila.

okay, let’s talk about shelia ground up. i was playing a show, the show was not going so hot because the pa system was really quiet and it was in a really huge warehouse space. and people couldn’t hear me. so i just said, “fuck this, i’m gonna do a loud punk song.” so i just looped three guitar chords that i just randomly chose, then i added a lead guitar thing on the looping pedal, and then i just went and pulled the floor tom and the snare drum out from the curtain where the former band had put their equipment. and then i just started banging on the drums with maracas– i think it’s on youtube, that’s where that song was written, straight up.

and when i sang the words, they were so unbelievably unconscious, it’s like i was singing somebody else’s song. so at first i thought, “this is good, i’m writing a love song for boys to sing to girls. it’s a heterosexual love song. what could be more experimental than me writing a straight up love song?” then i thought maybe the last part’s a little weird, the “we’ll die alone together” part.

i guess, my point is that i realized i had written maybe, i dunno, the first ever asexual love song. where it’s really just about a fear of dying alone– you need contact, you need love, you need empathy. you need this relationship but if there’s no sex involved, people act like it’s not a legitimate relationship.

the first ever asexual love song. it makes me like it even more.

The greatest serial killer in history has never been named. But what if we are looking in the wrong place?

In 1888, a deranged killer stalked his prey on the streets of east London at night. After 121 years since the murder and mutilation of at least five prostitutes, the case remains unsolved and the true identity of Jack the Ripper has never been known. The world’s greatest criminal investigators have focused on searching for answers in London. However, in the 1890s a series of horrific murders took place across the United States in New York, San Francisco, Galveston and Atlanta, that mirrored the attacks in attacks in the UK. In this one hour special, Discovery Channel’s viewers will witness the new evidence, science and analytical techniques being used to reveal the true identity of Jack the Ripper.

NYPD Cold Case Detective Ed Norris

The Discovery Channel’s documentary, Jack the Ripper in America focuses on Detective Ed Norris, former head of the NYPD Cold Case Unit, who investigates and uncovers new evidence not seen since the time of the murders. In trying to solve the 118 year old murder of New York prostitute Carrie Brown, he begins to note the similarities between her murder and the famous Whitechapel murders in London. Brown’s murderer had a three-stage MO (strangled, penetrating wound, pulled apart) Because of the unusual and gruesome nature of the crime, the press of the day, immediately began asking the question, “Is Jack the Ripper in New York“. Norris sees the same unusual ‘signature‘ in both the London and New York killers. They both kill prostitutes by strangling, cutting the throat, and eviscerating the body. For Norris this indicates that he might be looking at the same killer.

Carrie Brown aka Old Shakespeare

The key in all cold cases is finding the clues missed by the original investigators. Although, Brown was murdered on April 23, 1891, Norris decides to let a new set of eyes look at the evidence. Enter Dr. Jonathan Hayes, the Manhattan Senior Medical Examiner. Dr. Hayes combs through the autopsy report of Carry Brown. He reaches some interesting conclusions, including a special marking on the body, which I won’t reveal here, you’ll have to watch the show. On August 7th, 1891, another unidentified prostitute is murdered with the same MO as Brown, and pulled from the East river. Visiting the New York Municipal Archives, Norris finds that the old newspapers of that time, reveal another shocking detail. The killer actually wrote to the NYPD, before the murder of Carry Brown. His letter is recreated below:

Capt. Ryan,

You think that “Jack the Ripper” is in England, but he is not, I am right here and I expect to kill somebody by Thursday next, and so get ready for me with your pistols, but I have a knife that has done more than your pistols. Next thing you will hear of some woman dead.

Yours truly,

Jack the Ripper

Richard Jones

Detective Norris wants to get into Jack’s head, and walk in his foot steps. He feels that he was an organized killer that took advantage of the conditions of the time: no ambient street lighting, a black curtain of smoke over the city caused by burning low quality coal, and counting on his victims to naturally take him to the dark, secluded places used in the prostitution trade. Norris takes viewers through a summary of the Ripper murders by using re-enactments and walking through the crime scenes. Next, Norris consults London historian Richard Jones, owner of Ripper Walking Tours and author of Uncovering Jack the Ripper’s London. Jones has spent more than two decades investigating the Whitechapel murders. He asks Jones if any of the serious Ripper suspects had ever traveled to the United States after the death of Mary Kelly. Jones provided him with three names: Severin Klosowski, Francis Tumblety, and James Kelly.

Known as the From Hell or Lusk Letter

Norris then consults with Sheila Kurtz, a Forensic Hand Writing Analyst, Master Graphologist and President of Graphology Consulting Group. Kurtz had successfully worked on the Son of Sam case among many others. After reviewing samples of the Ripper’s hand writing, Kurtz identified the writer as a very disturbed individual, who she said, “I wouldn’t want to be in his company“. For additional details on her analysis please visit her blog. The graphic to the left shows the letter was purportedly written in 1888 by Jack the Ripper.

Dr. Thomas Bond

Norris then paid a visit to Britain’s National Archives. The archives hold thousands of original documents in the Ripper case. There, Norris discovers a document not previously used in the investigation. A profile of the killer. Sir Robert Anderson, the head of the police Criminal Investigation Departments, asked Dr Thomas Bond, Britain’s top police surgeon in 1888 to examine material connected with the Whitechapel murder investigation. Bond wrote a 19th-century version of a modern day unsub profile, based on personally examining the body of Mary Kelly and reading the autopsy reports on the first four victims. In the report, he describes in detail the type of person they should be investigating. Dr. Bond was sure that all five women had been killed by the same hand, because the throats of all victims had been cut in a similar way and the victims were presumably lying down when murdered. (for additional details on Dr. Bond’s profile, click here to read the report) Norris ultimately uses this 121 year old profile to narrow the three suspects down to one name. James Kelly. In the world of police parlance, Norris says that “Kelly looks good“.

Jack the Ripper victims: Polly Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catharine Eddowes, Mary Kelly

In 1883, James Kelly only one month married, argues with his wife and accuses her of being unfaithful. In a psychotic rage, he uses the methods of strangulation and throat slashing to kill her. Kelly is caught, convicted and sentenced to die by hanging. Then his employer comes forward and explains that he believes Kelly is mentally disturbed. Kelly was then examined by a alienist and committed to the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Kelly’s psychiatric report has been sealed for over 125 years, until Norris examines it.

Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum

In 1863, Broadmoor was the first custom-built asylum to house criminal lunatics. In Broadmoor, Kelly is a outwardly a model prisoner, but at the same time he is secretly planning his escape. Working in the asylum’s carpentry shop, he cunningly uses a piece of medal he carved into a key to aid his escape. In January of 1888, Kelly escaped and just disappeared. At that time a series of stabbings and slashing attacks of women start in London. Three victims: Annie Millwood, (February 25, 1888, stabbed repeatedly, but survived), Ada Wilson, (March 28, 1888, slashed in the throat, but survived), and Martha Tabram, (August 7, 1888, stabbed 23 times, did not survive). Norris feels these are the early attempts of Jack the Ripper, who like many serial killers, escalates and only gets more brutal over time. After these three attacks, the first London Ripper murder occurs. Surprisingly, Kelly was once considered a suspect by London police, but after only minimal checking at his old residence, they simply gave up, and were never able to find him. With the huge amount of pressure they were under, the case against Kelly went cold…

Astonishingly, in 1927…forty years later, a much older Kelly voluntarily returns to the insane asylum and began to chronicle his travels. A typed copy of Kelly’s confession letter survives in the National Archives, and Norris is the first detective to read it. In the letter, Kelly describes having “problems dealing with society“, and being “overtaken with feelings of envy, jealousy, and malice“. Kelly states, “the thing has been hard because of all kinds of ’skank’” (a term he uses to refers to women of low moral character) and “I’ve been on the warpath since I left Broadmoor Asylum.” Also in his letter, he admits to traveling to London after his escape, and more interestingly he tells of traveling to the United States and arriving in New York conveniently before the Carrie Brown murder. He was by profession, a trained upholsterer, and would have known quiet a bit about knives and how to use them effectively for the purpose of murder. Kelly also mentioned traveling to many cities in the US before returning to England and admitted that he came to the US many times over a period of 40 years.

USS Zaandam

First Norris wanted to check to make sure that Kelly’s confession matched up with actual travel records of the day. In Britain’s National Maritime Museum, they kept track of every ship that came to the United States. Kelly said he traveled to America aboard an Anglo-German steamer named the Zaandam that sailed from Rotterdam to New York. At the museum, Norris not only confirmed the ship existed, but that it sailed from Rotterdam to New York on October 7, 1890—two years after the last Ripper murder in London (11/88) and months before the April 23, 1891 murder of Carrie Brown in New York. You might be thinking, “How does a ‘wanted man’ get into the United States without detection?” Professor Dan Citrum is an expert in 19th-century immigration and explains how easily it could have been done. Remember this was before Ellis Island was established, so getting in and out of the country was very easy. No drivers licenses, no passports, and no photo id whatsoever. Many people back then, came to this country to start over, and remake themselves and get lost in the huge crowds of New York city. In his confession, Kelly admits to changing his name once his ship arrives to ‘John Miller‘, one of the most common names both then and now. Kelly used his new name like a disguise to blend in and escape police scrutiny.

Knowing from experience that many serial killers travel extensively, to avoid detection, Detective Norris plots the cities Kelly claims to have visited against the murders written about in the newspapers. He begins to see similarities in Ripper-like murders committed in other cities: New York NY, Trenton, NJ, Galveston, TX, New Orleans, LA, Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, Jackson, CA, San Francisco, CA, Denver, CO. Each of these murders occurred during the time that Kelly, thorough his confession letter, said he was in that city. Even the city newspapers asked the same question “Is this the work of Jack the Ripper” and “Is this the fiend of Whitechapel?” and “Has Jack the Ripper Invaded Texas at Last“. Detective Norris identified twelve murders across five states in just four years…and remember, Kelly was gone for forty years…you can do the math. To read an amazing collection of news reports, please visit Casebook: Jack the Ripper.
Using a asylum photo of Kelly provided by the National Archives, he was able to see what Kelly looked like at age 67. Norris then contacted Steve Mancusi, a NYPD senior forensic artist who has helped solve the most difficult cases for the last 30 years. He wanted Mancusi to use forensic imaging technology normally used for age-progression in missing child cases, but with this case, he wanted him to reverse the effects of aging, to show what Kelly would have looked like in his 30’s. The striking illustration below on the right is based on their findings.

Both illustrations of Jack the Ripper

The left composite, was drawn based on 118 year old eye-witness accounts of Jack the Ripper in London. They examined different witness statements and used modern day forensics to come up with a portrait of the killer, even indicating what type of hat he wore.

The drawing on the right, is the result of Mancusi shaving 40 years off of James Kelly’s photo at age 67. As you can see, once they added the type of hat mentioned by eye witnesses, the drawings are a very close match.

In the end, there is no doubt in Norris’ mind that he has found Jack the Ripper. We may never know. John Kelly died of natural causes in 1929 inside Broadmoor Asylum and took his secrets to his grave. In my opinion, Jack the Ripper in America was very well done and is a must-see for all forensic buffs and amateur Ripperologists. I’m interested in seeing further research, analysis and discussion of Norris’ theory. Regarding any factual errors in this post, I apologize in advance, and encourage everyone to let me know what needs to be corrected.

Time After Time

On a lighter note, anybody remember the movie “Time After Time” starring Malcolm McDowell, John Warner and Mary Steenburgen? McDowell played H.G. Wells, who uses his time machine to chase his friend, Warner (aka Jack the Ripper) through the streets of modern day (1979) San Francisco. After watching Norris’ documentary, maybe Hollywood’s silly (but entertaining) version of the Ripper story had a sliver of truth to it after all.

A triumphant achievement on the part of Jim Tully, well-researched and written. James Kelly is his suspect, a lunatic upholsterer and wife-murderer who is actually in the Guinness book of world records for his escape from Broadmoor asylum.
Have you gone grocery shopping recently? Unless you are Lorelai Gilmore I am sure you have, and I do

Have you gone grocery shopping recently? Unless you are Lorelai Gilmore I am sure you have, and I don’t know about you, but I find grocery shopping hard. Not hard as in the concept of going to a large store, or the farmers market, and buying food is hard, but hard as in it is difficult to ensure I’m eating well and that I am not breaking the bank to do so.

At my parents house we eat as a family, which really only occurred once a day during the week, which was at dinner but nearly every day, without fail we would eat as a family and everyday a balanced meal, complete with side salad would appear before me. Now that I live on my own there is nobody cooking for me, and that means a lack of balanced meals. I don’t eat enough veggies. The rest of my diet I do pretty well with, but the veggies I just can’t seem to get right.

I know that I should eat 5-10 a day and I know all of the benefits that come along with eating veggies and fruits in those amounts but I just don’t. I think the problem is that I am not a big veggie person to begin with. I like them sure, but I can never figure out what to do with them, and I don’t eat enough of them to buy them in quantities that don’t cost me an arm and a leg. I sometimes buy those pre-made supermarket salads which I enjoy, and I do like stopping at the family run market down the street from my school where I’ll buy a tomato and some mushrooms and spinach and make an omelette but I don’t do it often enough. I know I should be getting 5-10 a day, but mostly it’s 2 or 3 a day… on a good day. I do eat a lot of dairy, and bread… I live on grilled cheese, but it seems to me I need to improve this diet-o-mine.

So here is my resolve- for the next month (the rest of my academic semester) I will work harder to get to my 5 to 10 a day, and I will report back here weekly, with what I have purchased (and how much I’ve spent) and what I’ve been eating. I encourage everyone to try and get their 5-10 a day, and we can all feel better about our diets together!

If anyone has recipes or tips they want to share, comment below! What should I cook, what should I try, and do you get 5-10 a day, and how do you do it??

Bom, eu tiro a parte do estúpida, porque pra mim ela mereceu.

Ficar levantando a saia e mostrando “as coisa” pro povo ver?

I have the sweetest ever in-laws. this was my last weekend off for the (at least distant) future

I have the sweetest ever in-laws.

this was my last weekend off for the (at least distant) future & they knew I was missing my Granny and was wanting to see my cousin that has ALS, and my poor great aunt (Grannys sister) is dying (she has hospice & all) and I wanted to be there for my Granny for at least a little while….

they took it upon themselves to drive me to ‘bama so I could see them. Who does that? My in-laws, that’s who…..how wonderful are they??? Thanks, and *muah*……they even stayed in a hotel for 2 nights so I could see them. They rock!

I stayed with my Dad…..it was an unusual feeling to be there. I haven’t stayed under my Dads roof since he was married to my Mom when I was like 17…….it is true what they say about you can’t go home again that is for sure.

I have to be honest with you all, my lady bug friends…….I hate being in Alabama now. Seriously. The whole time I was missing Savannah so! I don’t think that I would have enjoyed it a bit more, even if it were for happier reasons I was going. I am convinced I’m where I need to be, in Savannah.

My cousin that has ALS, is doing as well as can be expected. She loves the cards & letters that are being sent to her, and since she is now confined to a hospital bed, she needs them now more than ever…..please keep sending ‘em! She loves ‘em!! She weighs all of 90 lbs soaking wet, and while she’s always been little bitty, you can tell ALS is taking it’s toll on her. She has a feeding tube, and has lost movement in her legs mostly. They are holding church at their home now sometimes so that she can be apart of it…..bless her heart. Will you please pray for Shelia?

my great aunt, ‘Tilda, has cancer & has been sent home to die. They only gave her a few weeks, and she’s already gone past that quite a bit…My Granny, of course, is a mess. This is her sister & her best friend. My Granny is in her late 80’s and has seen too much death in her precious life. She is so depressed that even I couldn’t make her feel better. She is so heartbroken. It hurts me to see Granny like this. I couldn’t even get her to go with me anywhere. She just sits in her little home & prays. It’s the sadest thing I’ve ever seen……well, I’ve seen other sad stuff, but you know what I mean. She keeps saying that she didn’t want to outlive another sibling (and who can blame her for not wanting to do that, go thru that again?), that she hopes she goes first. Bless her heart. Will you pray for her too?

I’m so thankful that I got to go, but I won’t be going back (by my choice) in maybe ever. If there’s family stuff I have to take care of I will go, but this was it for me. Alabama is just too sad for me, too depressing for me……so not where God wants me to be in this time of my life…..

I have to work today & then Tuesday & then it’s my off day. I think I’m going to just get out & soak up the sun & feel it warm my face….smell the ocean breeze & thank God that He has placed me here……among people that I love so much & love me so much too. Savannah is indeed Heaven on Earth.

Winter is a coming, and that means one thing. It is time to break out the mittens, scarves, parkas,

Winter is a coming, and that means one thing. It is time to break out the mittens, scarves, parkas, and long-johns that haven’t seen the light of day since last winter, which in Canada was really only a few short months ago. I’ve never been into super stylish winter clothing; personally I don’t think much of it looks practical and practicality, for me, is the key; when you live in a place where it is normal to go to school at 8am with a temperature of about 10C and leave school at 3pm with 2 feet of snow on the ground (OK maybe not normal, but it has happened, and it was not pleasant)

Here now I present you with the 5 important winter wardrobe tips.

5- Boots

Boots are a girl’s best friend. They’ll keep your toes warm and make trekking in the fluffy white stuff possible. The best kind are ones with support, and that are adjustable, this will enable you to get the best fit all around your leg, and keep the most snow out.

Impractical- Pretty high heeled boots. I know, I know, I love them too, but when there is snow and ice on the ground I always fear for the well (or not so well) put together ladies trapsing through downtown Halifax in 3 inch pointy heels. Halifax is full of ups and downs, walking from the Ferry up to ones office can be dangerous in the best of times,so it is best to avoid them, for health and safety reasons, when walking in a winter wonderland.

Practical- Flat boots, which can be pretty or more functional (I’d hate to see your gorgeous leather boots ruined by the evils of winter salting). They will provide good grip going up and down hills, stairs and on those nasty patches of black ice that seem to lie in wait for us. As well your feet must be warm because frost bite, or not being able to feel your toes is no fun at all.

vs

(Zappos, BCBGeneration Michy @ $158.95, Mountain Equipment Co-op, Keen Betty Boot Winter Boots (Women’s) @ $149)

4- Mittens/Gloves

Now I can’t speak for you, but personally I do not want to show up at work, or school with hands I cannot move or feel because I neglected to wear gloves or mittens. Both gloves and mitttens do a great job of keeping your hands warm provided you get them from the right source.

Impractical- The flimsy, thin gloves you get at the dollar store. Unless you buy 4 or 5 pairs and wear them over top of one another these do little to ensure your hands stay warm. Although they are convenient for making bunnies out of, their use pretty much ends there.

Practical- Leather, lined gloves. They;ll keep you toasty while you sip your hot apple cider on your way to work in the morning. They’ll last forever, and leather gloves are so classic, they go with everything. There is no going wrong here, unless you neglect to buy real leather. Splurge a little, and invest in a nice nice pair.

vs

(Your local dollar store, $1. Danier.com, Womens Lined Gloves, $39)

3- Hat/Hoods

To wear one or not to wear one that is the questions, whether ’tis nobler… we’ll you know how it goes. Hats can be a tricky one, on one side we have your desire for warm ears, on the other, your hair. I have wavy hair, that, when subjected to a hat, becomes flat and sort of greasy. I don’t mind this when I am skiing, or walking the dog, but it is not pleasant to show up to an event with gross greasy hair. On way I have found to get around this is by using the hood of my parka instead of wearing a hat. It is not the best solution ever but it gets the job done, provided I don’t have to go very far; on days when it’s cold and I need to walk to work I normally just pull my hair back into a tight bun, and it looks professional and clean. For this there is not a ‘practical’ or ‘impractical’ option, it really depends on your hair and how you wear it. But remember earmuffs are ALWAYS an option;, especially when they are in animal prints.

2- Coats and Jackets

A coat is perhaps the most important article of clothing you will wear this winter. I have three winter-ish coats and jackets I wear, depending on the weather and occasion. There is the full on parka, with snaps and zippers and some sort of avalanche rescue system, it is bright red, with orange accents and some reflective strips on the back and a thing that I can hook my head phones/mp3 player into. It is the king petty of all winter coats. I have a bomber style jacket that I got when I was on my squadron biathlon team. It is warm, although not great below ~10C, and is great if I have to run to the mall or am going to work and the parka is a little excessive. The third in my collection is a blazer from GAP that I bought a few years ago. By far the most stylish of the three it is the one I wear when I am dressed up and hitting the town or going to an interview of some variety. I would suggest investing in a good quality jacket if you live somewhere cold, like Canada or the Northern US…. or Russia. Although let’s face it, if you live in any of these places you already own a jacket (or three). If you’re visiting colder clims this season and need to buy a jacket or coat, go for quality; a good quality winter coat or jacket will last for years and years.

1. The Underthings

These days I rarely leave home without leggings on under my jeans. With temperatures hovering around 0C when I leave for school in the morning you can perhaps understand why. I hate that feeling on my thighs when the wind whips through my jeans, and they get all red and bumpy. Not cool. I just have a few pairs of cheap leggings from Old Navy that do the trick, although feel free to invest in Under Armour or the like if that is your thing, but it’s not really necessary for getting to and from the office or class. I also tend to wear a long sleeve shirt (or two) on really cold days, as the heating at my university is… not amazing. I guess the whole ‘dress in layers’ mantra my biathlon coach beat into our heads fits into the section; and it’s true, when you start that 25+km ski you’re chilly, but about 5km into it you’re sweating like a beast and probably wish you didn’t have the huge parka on which you now need to some how bungee cord to your back (you remember the bungee cords right?), but if you had instead worn 5 or 6 layers of shirts with a wind breaking jacket over top you can simply strip off a shirt or two and still be warm, and simply tie the shirts around your waist (or stuff them in your snow pants).

So basic lessons we have learned today. Quality, and function over pretty and cheap, dressing in layers is awesome, and watch out for black ice, cause it’ll get you.

Hi gang,

Hope your Halloween was spooktacular!

I’m a little swamped with school work, but not to worry, I’m on this blog thang. A little shout out love to Diet Coke Diaries, who is a blogger who is living the life I wish I could have had at seventeen. It’s so weird, someone outside of British Columbia or the Philippines (my two main networks) is able to stumble upon this little blog.

I don’t usually bring my personal life (except for all things fun) into the blog, or at least specifics, because I don’t want to have to bare everything to the world. So I’m just going to pre-emptive strike you guys and tell you that posting may be a little sparse in the next little while. BUT I have goodies from the past to share with you.

Read closely. Pretty sure my favourite independent new book store didn’t mean to cross reference female anatomy. Okay that was something funny that I’ve been holding back, especially on a day like this, where I feel kinda shitty.

Because I’m up to no good (homework), I’ve been blasting a few songs in particular:

Yeah, yeah. Taylor Momsen, blah blah, but this is a good song.

Live

Always reminds me of Sheila’s Great Escape into the Vampire Weekend.
PS: If you can’t read the note, you’re unfortunately not one of Sheila’s friends. Whoops.

Anyways, it’s Sunday, I got an extra hour of sleep, and I’m so broke, you can’t even imagine. Sigh.

I love to travel. I hate packing. Packing is a part of travelling though, well unless you are among

I love to travel.

I hate packing. Packing is a part of travelling though, well unless you are among the ultra-rich and just buy new stuff when you get where ever you’re going. Alas this is not me. To give you an idea of my ability to minimize I was able to travel around the world for 6 months out of a duffle bag, and my school bag. My duffle was one of those regular ones, about a foot high, a foot across and 2.5 feet long, or there abouts. The only thing I couldn’t fit inside were my running shoes, which I would tie to the outside most of the time, and wear when I was flying from place to place. So since it is getting into that season when we in the north like to start heading south for some sun here are some suggestions and tips to help with your packing.

1.	Pack, unpack and pack again- sometimes upon first glance you think you need way more that you really do. You’ll discover you’ve over packed; really how many dresses do you need? One or two will be plenty. If you’re backpacking you’re probably not staying in the same place for more than a few days, so no one will notice if you wear the same dress every other day. Underwear? I would say 4 pairs. They don’t take up tons of room and it’s always nice to have clean ones. You get the idea. Don’t worry other places in the world have Laundromats (although if you are Zurich I only know of one… and it’s in the red-light district, but that is another story for another time) so you’ll be able to wash your clothes and you won’t need 12 t-shirts, 4 pairs of jeans, 3 skirts and 5 bikinis.

2.	Where are you going and what are you doing?- On my world adventures we were doing a lot of driving… and I mean a lot. From the south of France to the Czech Republic and back, and from Adelaide to Sydney, along with about 2 weeks of touring by car in South Africa. That is a lot of miles in a car, and if all I had brought with me were poorly fitting skinny jeans it would have been a very uncomfortable trip. We also did a lot of hiking, museum visits, but this was also paired with meeting some of my dad’s business clients in Europe as well as a great-uncle in South Africa, occasions which call for a more formal clothes. Being only 15 at the time I got away with jeans a nice shirt for all of these things, but that might not fly now that I’m a lady good and proper. Footwear is key; sneakers are a must, especially if colder climates will be involved. If you’re only going to tropical climates you might be able to get away with a solid pair of sandals. If you need dressy shoes, try to find one pair (that you already own) that go with anything you may be wearing, if you bring more than one pair you are cutting into clothing space, or space you could use for souvenirs. And remember if anywhere on your itinerary includes the word ‘hostel’ bring flip-flops, because those showers, they are sketchy no matter where you are (Truth- I wear flip flops if I’m showering anywhere but home, hostel, hotel, campground or otherwise).

3.	Have a good quality bag- function is imperative. My duffle bag was one my parents had got at some golf tournament; it was pretty solid, but not meant for the wear and tear it received. Look for good zippers, pockets that make sense (great it has 100000 compartments, how many will you actually use?) and a size that is appropriate for what you need it for, you don’t need an 85L pack for a weekend trip, and a duffle bag may be a bit small for you to travel the world. If you’re in Canada and want to find a solid bag, I’d recommended Mountain Equipment Co-op; just remember to read the reviews before you buy anything.

4.	First Aid is Awesome- whether you’re going to the spa for the weekend or backpacking through Siberia a first aid kit is always a good thing to have. I have one in my school bag, it only has alcohol wipes and band-aids, so I can’t fix a broken arm, but I can patch up the things I come across most often. Have a big one of you are going to be gone for a while, and if you know you’re going to be in developing countries it might not hurt to have some syringes with you too; just in case. If you’re going to be travelling solo, or in remote locations I’d also recommend having some first aid training; better safe than sorry and all that.

5.	Make-up- I know, I know, you are a lady and refuse to leave the house without your face on. Well first of all, you’re beautiful without all of that, and second if you insist on having it here are some tips. Bring what you need, no more; really 6 shades of eye shadow? Excessive, your favourite two are all you need. Lip stick, lip stain, lip balm, whatever your favourite brand is bring some, your lips are inevitably going to get chapped, or burned, or something and having some will reduce the pain. Again with lip color, one or two colors are fine, you don’t need 9 tubes. Sunscreen, although not makeup is also an important part of happy travels, home or abroad. Bring some with you, and know you can buy it where you’re going (probably). When you do need to buy it in whatever exotic country you’ve decided to visit do yourself a favour and buy it from a drug store, not a fellow hawking it on the beach, it’s for your own good.

So happy travels, I hope these tips make your travels a little easier and if you have any questions to ask comment below.

Bon Voyage!!

This is a great vote, coming from a very intellectual, talented, and attention-effective person. Dr. Sheila Johnson, a hard-left Democrat, voting for the Conservative Republican – Bob McDonnell will certainly sway many votes. The reason, in my opinion, she has chosen to endorse “McDonnell for VA-Governor” is because she realizes that in the hands of a democrat, small businesses will surely suffer. Democrats historically, and still prove to us today, that they are supporters of huge government, and a non-capitalistic nation. Which does not allow for small businesses to exist, much less compete with one another. As the founder of one of the largest television networks (BET) and a major job creator, Dr. Sheila Johnson knows, that in order to continue to run a successful business and employ hundreds of people, her Governor must be Bob McDonnell.

Finally, after having my normal travel schedule curtailed by the current economic climate I had the

Finally, after having my normal travel schedule curtailed by the current economic climate I had the opportunity for a trip to Boston to see my good friends in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. So this post summarizes all the things Lucy got up to while in the USA……

Monday 12th October

I had previously emailed my friends Debra & Connie to say I was coming to the USA and to see if we could do dinner one night while I was in town. Debra was getting ready to go on holiday so to New Mexico, so to squeeze this in we decided to go out the evening of the day I arrived in town, even though I was likely to be quite tired. I decided I’d try and contact Connie later in the week to see about meeting up with her. We went to Legal Seafoods original and best location at chestnut Hill on Boylston Street. It was really busy, I think we had about a 45 minute wait which allowed Debra and I plenty of time to catch up before we got to eat our meal. Food and wine were good as usual I had a mustard and crumb coated haddock and nice glass of Sauvignon. When I came to pay, I discovered the usual stupidity of Barclay’s was still in full flow and they had sopped my credit card because I had dared to use it overseas with out prior notice. You’d think spending money in Heathrow, followed by a rental car in the USA and a hotel would clue them into my trip being a genuine journey overseas, oh well fortunately I had cash with me.

Tuesday 13th October

On the Tuesday I went along to meet the regular group that meets at the Natick Crowne Plaza hotel. I arrived early and grabbed a bite to eat before spending ages catching up with Danielle and all her work issues. My friend Erica arrived later in the evening……between Erica and Danielle we took a lot of photos some of which you see here. The group that meets here really is my favourite place to meet because it’s a great venue with nice staff, a good crowd in the cocktail bar and great people to talk to

Wednesday 14th

This was kind of a night off, although I did drop of at Wigs by Sylvia to purchase a new wig, Sylvia was so nice and I think gave good advice

Thursday 15th

So I had agreed to meet up with Jenn for dinner and was going to drop by her house directly after work. I had left voice mail and email agreeing times etc. and telling her I had managed to lose her address from my GPS. She replied saying she was looking forward to seeing me So OK I thought I know I’ll drive to her town and them phone her, expecting everything to be fine. Problem was I only had her cell number and she doesn’t get cell reception at her house, so after call 5 or 6 times I gave up and decided I simply go back to my hotel change and go out on my own. Fortunately I checked my email and found she had mailed me her landline number. I called and we arranged to meet roughly half at the Walden Grille. We had a really good time catching up and chatting to our waitress. So much has happened for Jenn in the past year, she has had facial surgery and is now full-time in her job as a high school teacher.

We had a great evening which I really enjoyed.

Friday 16th

So Friday was my first night with the Sisters of Boston group, who meet at the Peabody Marriott. I got there early to eat prior to people arriving and going on, I hoped into Boston. Ashley and Courtney were the first to arrive followed Caroline. Mitzi and Sheila. Ashley then had her meeting, it was decided that the group would go to Village Green. Village green is not a place I was particularly keen to visit..it seems it is simply a vanilla dance club for older divorced people, it also closes quite early. So Mitzi and I decided to go into Lynn to a bar called 47 Central, the music was good we had a few drinks and finished up around 2:00AM

Saturday 17th

Sheila was going to Club 313 in Manchester NH, I decided to meet her there rather than share a ride as she only lives 20 minutes away from 313 and I had a 50 minute drive. Unfortunately I didn’t realize I would have to produce my passport for ID to get into the club and be allowed to drink alcohol. I’m constantly amazed at what a strange country the USA is when it come to drinking laws, in Boston everywhere is capable of accepting a driver’s license for ID. I got to meet up with Sally and Danielle who I hadn’t seen for a couple of years which was nice. 313 is a great club with multiple rooms one big dance floor, on big bar for karaoke and one for pool. It was good to see people and dance

Sunday 18th

Nothing much going on with anyone else, so I went out for dinner on my own to Legal Seafoods at Natick…it was very quiet as the weather had been bad with snow all day. I had a very nice dish of cooked oysters (cooked line clams casino) followed by Tuna Sashimi

Monday 19th

I was really pleased to see Sonia had replied to my email and tha we could meet up, I missed seeing Sonia on my last trip so we had a lot to catch up on. Sonia emailed me back web links to a restaurant we were going to eat in Joses in Cambridge and a bar we could go to later Toad, we agreed to meet outside the mexican restaurant. The food was really, really good, it was a tiny family run affair and probably not the sort of place anyone from out-of-town would find. We chatted on for a while and then moved on to Toad, a small bar on Mass avenue with great live music. The first band were a stand in , they were a highly accomplished band of 4 blues/jazz players with sax, bass, drums and guitar it was a shame they only did 4 numbers. During the break we had more of a chance to talk about all kinds of things: photography, music, T related issues as well as talking to the bass player from the band. Then it was time for the main band to play Jen Kearny and The Lost Onion. They were also very good probably best described as Jazz/rock with a line up of keyboards, guitar, bass, drums, sax, trumpet…..then it was midnight and time to drop Sonia off and get back to my hotel.

Tuesday 20th

So I had previously arranged with Sheila that she was going to come to dinner with me prior to going to the Natick Crowne, Sonia also wanted to come so the arrangement was that she would get the train to Waltham and I would pick her up there, drive to Natick and meet Sheila at Legal Seafoods. It didn’t quite work right as there was an inbound and outbound platform for the train at Waltham and I was parked at the inbound platform, however we soon figured it out….it meant we were 10 or so minutes late meeting Sheila. We had a really good dinner (I had oven baked flounder with wild mushrooms, brussel sprouts, baked hazelnut vinaigrette it was fabulous) and great conversation about Sheila’s travels around Germany, Puerto Rico and times in army. time for a quick group picture and then across to the Crowne.

Sheila seemed to fit right in, I chatted to various people, we took a few pictures and generally had a good time. Sadly Danielle wasn’t there for some reason, I hope there’s no problem as its un-heard of for her to miss a meeting. Then it was time to take Sonia back into Boston, the drive in was another nice opportunity to chat.

Wednesday 21st

Time to fly home to the UK, hoping it won’t be so long next time until I manage to get to see my good friends in Boston

Greetings blog-o-sphere, Sheila here and at your services; I, like the other lovely ladies (and gent) who have introduced themselves over the last few days, will be one of the regular contributors here at Lady Business.

I suppose you want to know a little bit about me. I am currently working on my B.Sc. which I hope will eventually lead me to work in the agriculture. I study at a small college, but next year I’ll be moving half way across the country to finish my degree at a bigger university.

I’m a big geek, I love science and all manner of geeky things, including, but not limited to, Star Wars, Star Trek, Quirks & Quarks, Myth Busters, The Rachel Maddow Show, and Jeopardy! I’m also a world traveller; having been to every continent, except Antarctica. I also lived in Brazil for a while, because of this I am fluent in Portuguese, which does not come in handy ever in small town but I do not speak French, which I feel I should, being a Canadian and all, so I’m going to try and learn next year. Next year will also involve me taking a 2 or 3 month trip to South America which I’m sure I will write about, probably until you are sick of hearing about it.

My lady business will focus a lot on science stuff, ladies in science and such, body issues, health, politics (Canadian, American and otherwise), agriculture, TV, wine, travel, and whatever else strikes my fancy. So I hope you stick around our lovely blog, and enjoy our lady business.

p.s. Nova Scotia isn’t really communist, nor is it a city, we are in fact a province in Canada, currently under New Democratic rule.
