Earlier this year, Coffee Culture, an established Canadian coffeehouse chain, came to Buffalo. Unlik

Earlier this year, Coffee Culture, an established Canadian coffeehouse chain, came to Buffalo. Unlike Tim Hortons, a chain that came years ago in the same fashion, Coffee Culture does everything it can to create a relaxed and upscale setting that encourages customers to stay rather than leave. It’s first location (on Main Street near Glen Park, where Sweet Jenny’s used to be) doesn’t even have a drive-through. (The Sheridan Drive location that recently opened up does.) With its coffee, baked goods, lunch items, and espresso drinks, can this upscale chain compete with local favorites such as SPoT?

Yes. Not only does Coffee Culture boast food and drink good enough to compete with the locals (detailed later), the company appears to know that location can be everything. It’s two main locations so far, on Sheridan Drive and Main Street, couldn’t be in a better place. The Sheridan location in Tonawanda has literally no competition. The building itself completely outshines its surroundings (unassuming buildings, a Walgreens, and a funeral home) and remains the only coffeehouse in Tonawanda. (Tim Hortons don’t provide an atmosphere suitable to extended stays, and Panera is definitely more restaurant than coffeehouse.) And while the Coffee Culture on Main Street is on the same street as a Starbucks and a SPoT, the latter two are out of short walking distance of Coffee Culture; someone walking through Glen Park will undoubtedly start, pass through, or end at Coffee Culture while SPoT and Starbucks are further down the street. So, Coffee Culture has made itself accessible to most and presented itself to be welcoming to those who want to come, drink, eat, and relax. But, how is the food?

It’s not bad at all. Everything that one can buy at Coffee Culture is good at the very least and consistent across all locations. Some items on the menu are actually quite good and worth going to Coffee Culture for again. Over a span of at least 10 visits to Coffee Culture, my friends and I have sampled a good portion of the menu at both locations.

Drinks were surprisingly the weakest group in all. While blended drinks ($2.99 for a regular size) such as the Cookies and Cream Chiller (pic. 2), Mango Chiller, and Frozen Cappuccino (pic. 1), were all very good, everything else ended up being a little off par. Various hot espresso drinks (starting at $2.99), such as the Butter Pecan Latte (pic. 3) and the White Chocolate Mocha (pic. 4) were good, but tasted incredibly sweet. A hot chocolate, although not based on espresso, was the best of the hot drinks. It was full-bodied and accurately sweet. Furthermore, it was a steal at about $1 for a regular size. The worst of the hot drinks ended up being the plain, drip coffee. At just over a dollar for a small size, the coffee tasted stale, watery, thin-bodied, and lacking of any flavor. I, a coffee-addict, couldn’t finish the cup. After a few sips, it was thrown out. I haven’t purchased it again, but may in the near future and just to make sure I didn’t get a bad cup.

Baked goods and other desserts were relatively good and mostly as expected. Cookies (pic. 5)were moist and chewy, while a cinnamon roll was different than usual; instead of a plump, moist, “gooey” roll, it was thin, crispy, not very sweet, and had the slightest hint of cinnamon flavor. While not bad, it was different than the average cinnamon roll is expected to be. A croissant (pic. 6) was buttery, flakey, and everything that it should be, while a bagel fell short of local standards; Tim Hortons and Bagel Jay’s definitely have better bagels. Coffee Culture also offers a very prominent display of cakes and ice creams. While the ice cream is average (normal quality, expected flavors), the cakes appear much more impressive. Available are a few variations on a chocolate cake, a california torte, an apple-strussel tart, coffee-crumb cake, a cappuccino mouse, and others. The ‘chocolate overload’ cake was very rich but also very expensive. We all agreed that it was fine, but too expensive (at $6) given its size and quality. The most visually impressive dessert was the ‘Pralines n’ Cream Belgian Waffle’ (pic. 7). While regular Belgian Waffles can be had as a breakfast item, this dessert came as a split waffle topped with butter pecan ice cream, candied pecans, and caramel sauce. The waffle itself felt a little underdone (crisp exterior but sometimes mushy interior), but the dessert as a whole was very impressive. For only $5, it was something that three or four people could share and enjoy.

The strongest area of Coffee Culture’s food department is surely its lunch fare. Coffee Culture offers panini, soups, salads, and wraps. The Margherita Chicken Grill (pic.8), which included grilled chicken, roasted red peppers, and sun-dried tomato pesto, is a consistently good panini that I would recommend to anyone. Likewise, a Tuna Wrap was impeccably presented as a tortilla shell filled to the brim with fresh tuna and lettuce. The Minestrone Soup was good as well, which a nice beef stock and good vegetables.

Coffee Culture is here to stay in Buffalo, and for good reason. Great lunch fare, above-average baked goods, and good drinks will keep customers coming to the coffeehouse, and it’s wonderful ambiance and cozy feel will make patrons out of many. With the company planning to expand its realm in New York in the near-future, a Coffee Culture should be open or be opening soon in all parts of Western New York. This café is certainly worth a try as at least one of its aspects should be of interest to everybody.

By Sam Perkins, Blackheath player and Rugby World reader

I was once told a rugby player is fitter, stronger, harder and prettier than any footballer could be. I like to look at myself and see a typical piece of evidence to this suggestion. Rugby players are up there with the fittest of athletes. Alongside boxers, swimmers and decathlon participants, rugby demands testing dedication and fitness. I saw this in my recent viewing of the ‘Lion’s Tour of South Africa.’ I was disappointed to have missed the spectacular excursion our boys did in the summer, however, thanks to a certain ‘Centre’ teammate of mine, I was leant the DVD and on my way to witnessing (and on some level undergoing with them) the battle and union they went through.

In many blogs to come I shall refer to the ‘Tour’ on my subjects, starting with our current topic of fitness. I thought props were meant to be fat?! Sheridan, Vickery and Jones don’t have an ounce on them. Sheridan is a man mountain, shoulders wider than my bed posts and a grudge to go with it. Phil Vickery; now there’s a man who gets pumped up for a game. Respect goes fully to these legends. Which brings me to my prop fitness…I’m lacking! Looks like I need to get a lot fitter, have a bit more vigour, and gain some general ability if I’m going to start playing like the English front row. Last Saturday I got a chance to play at flanker. There I am thinking, “My chance to not run around so much, props have to do a lot more running than these fellows, right? Nope.” Probably more in fact. There’s no getting out of it, I’m going to have to start running in games, and maybe lose the dinosaur movement that has been dubbed to my jogging technique.

Still no try, don’t worry it’ll come soon.

I can’t ever imagine an address past four thousand. Where I live and I stay, all the numbers start with one. Years, all of them, but so far back no one remembers what happened then. But I do. I remember what happened in 1555 and 1511. Especially in 728. But that was before we moved to the city, where addresses meant four numbers, not three. Three was enough in a place where you can ride your bike to anything if anything was there to go to. I’ve never ventured far enough from where I reside to see the future streets. 2063. 4006. Where the places are called something without the N period that I’ve become so used to. Or maybe no period, I never knew. Here is so orderly: the grid system makes Madison my equator and Sate my prime meridian. Makes it so weird when my brother and I would drive out far on sticky summer nights. Numbers keep growing then drop off. Forever smelled like rain without raining. But no blue Febreeze can rain, city rain. Smelled like car horns. We’d drive out far, my brother and I. Far: Evanston. Where there are three Sheridans. Which sounds like a family name. Three Sheridans, all close. And they never want to move away from their little three-digit world. Or into the future streets. Especially not two thousand years into the future streets. I can’t even imagine an address that high, or what I would remember from the year 4707.

Met: Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg

Ziek, gestoord, pornografisch, gewelddadig, bizar.

Avatar

Regie: James Cameron (The Terminator, Aliens)

Brothers

Regie: Jim Sheridan (In the Name of the Father, In America)

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Regie: Terry Gilliam (Brazil, Twelve Monkeys)

The Limits of Control

Regie: Jim Jarmusch (Down by Law, Mystery Train)

Alright, so most of you may know that I was the Location Manager for an amazing movie called The 5th Quarter, directed by Rick Bieber. I used my “skillz” to get you guys the inside scoop on the Chicago filming of the 3rd installment of the Fockers movie, Little Fockers (starring Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro and Jessica Alba) to get you this inside news:

Filming is slated to begin on the platform of the Sheridan El stop tonight (Wednesday) for a scene in the movie. A very friendly rigging crew let me in on that hint after I flirted shamelessly with them! Right now they are filming at the intersection of Dakin and Sheridan, and you can see a HUGE film crew, plus all of their cameras, tools, etc, right around there!

Go take pictures for me and enjoy!!!

Happy 15th Birthday H Cup This Friday sees the return of the greatest club competition on the plan

Happy 15th Birthday H Cup

This Friday sees the return of the greatest club competition on the planet. Now in its 15th year, the Heineken Cup seems to be wide open from the outset with even the Scottish regions fancying their chances to make it beyond the last eight for the first time in history. With Leinster slowly usurping Munster as the force majeure in Irish rugby and the boys from Ulster showing remarkable improvement on last year, this season could be (another) season of Irish dominance in European rugby. The English sides, too, will feature heavily in this season’s campaign, with the charge being led by London Irish, Leicester and, I feel, Gloucester and a resurgent Mike Tindal. All is not too well in the Principality though and this season I think only Dai Young’s Cardiff side will feature in the knock-out stages, with Scott Johnson’s Osprey’s far too ‘hit and miss’ to be an effective force and the Scarlet’s and the Dragons struggling to find form in the Magners League. As for our Gallic cousins? I think this year’s showpiece will almost be a home game; the men in pink are awash with talent and will throw their all into achieving a spot in the final at the Stade de France, but I am sure that Toulouse and Clermont Auvergne would love nothing more than a ‘home’ final in Paris, too.

It is probably prudent to mention the two Italian teams in this year’s competition also, lest we forget that six nations compete for club rugby’s greatest prize. With Benetton Treviso stuck in their own ‘Group of Death’ it is difficult to see their campaign including a win this season. Viadana, however, could quite easily topple the jittery Ospreys and avoid the bottom spot in Pool Three. Buona Fortuna! To those brave, battling Italians and their soldiers of fortune.

After careful consideration, I have compiled my predictions for this weekend’s first round of action. There are one or two surprises, but for the most part I feel I have used rather conventional wisdom.

FRIDAY 9 OCTOBER

Pool Two: Gloucester Vs Newport Gwent Dragons

Gloucester are coming off the back of a strong fight back against Premiership strugglers Leeds and Mike Tindal’s outstanding performance should inspire the Cherry & Whites to shake off their ‘chokers’ tag for at least this game. A solid Gloucester scrum should negate any threat that the Dragons possess.

PREDICTION: Gloucester by 10.

Pool Four: Ulster Vs Bath

Can Faloon win silverware with Ulster, too?

Ulster are certainly a surprise package this year with Ian Humphreys and hard working Ballynahinch back-rower Willie Faloon rising to the fore. They were ever-present in last Friday’s flogging of the Scarlets at Ravenhill and sterling contributions from Ferris, Trimble and props Tom Court and B J Botha make the Northern Irish side look dangerous to say the least. The Ravenhill faithful have plenty to shout about, and Bath will struggle this season up front without the contribution of Matt Stevens, despite Lee Mears almost heroic performances at the coal face and in the loose.

PREDICTION: Ulster by two tries.

Pool Six: Leinster Vs London Irish

Last years European Champions meet last season’s surprise Premiership package in what could potentially be a prequel to the final. As mentioned to in my colleague Mr Chriwa’s My Five Favourite Things This Week the Luke Fitzgerald/ Sailosi Tagicakibau battle should be a tasty showdown. My only worry is that the Exile’s tight five might struggle against the wily Leinster pack, and the maestro ‘BOD’ ends up schooling mssrs Lamb and Malone in art of stand-off . If Toby Booth’s men can keep their cool and play rugby to their plan, a whole team of O’Driscol’s won’t contain them.

PREDICTION: London Irish by less than 7

SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER

Pool One: Northampton Vs Munster

It is time to face facts. Munster are on the wane. Their forwards lack the heart and combative nature of recent seasons and the toll of recent efforts is only too clear on many of the Munster team. A 30-0 drubbing by arch rivals Leinster only highlights how far they have fallen this season. Northampton however are on the up. A well-drilled and powerful pack led by tough hooker Hartley combined with astute attacking backs like Foden, Ashton, and Reihana should lead to a good win for the home side. The Saints will look to savage Munster in front of a baying Franklin’s Gardens mob.

PREDICTION: Northampton by more than two tries.

Pool One: Treviso Vs Perpignan

PREDICITON: Perpignan by 25 points. Thanks for coming.

Pool Two: Glasgow Vs Biarritz

Glasgow will have a lot on their plate come Saturday, and even more so if they are looking to win this clash against the French heavyweights. Biarritz will simply be too strong for Kelly Brown, Richie Vernon and the Evans boys to contain.

PREDICITON: Biarritz by 9 points.

Pool Three: ASM Clermont Auvergne Vs Viadana

PREDICTION: Clermont Auvergne by 30 points. Easy!

Pool Four: Stade Francais Vs Edinburgh

In this clash of capital cities, there can be only one winner. Stade Francais will shake off first half jitters to emerge eventual winners whilst Edinburgh look to develop on the sterling work done by Andy Robinson before his departure to the national side. The Gunners will emerge with a new-found reputation for committed forward play, however.

PREDICTION: Stade by 5.

Pool Six: Scarlets Vs Brive

I can’t imagine even the staunchest Scarlets fan predicting a win here for the beleaguered provincial side. Brive will do just enough, and the Scarlets will do precious little.

PREDICTION: Brive by 3.

SUNDAY 12 OCTOBER

Pool Three: Leicester Vs Ospreys

In recent seasons this game has been a cracker, but not so this year. Both sides have not quite found form in the early stages of their respective leagues, and they will be eager to hit the ground running at the weekend. Richard Cockerill is no shrinking violet so expect the Tigers to be roaring come Sunday lunchtime after a week of high-tempo training. The Osprey’s have yet to mould their individuals into an effective team. Scott Johnson’s cult of personality may be over-stretched here, so I anticipate a sound Tigers win, even without their first choice fly-half.

PREDICTION: Tigers by 8.

Pool Five: Toulouse Vs Sale

Since Sale lost the vast majority of their ‘grand chiens’ over the summer, they have looked flat and beatable since the outset of the 2009/2010 season. Their captain is very one dimensional and lacks the dynamism needed for elite club rugby. Still, with England stars Sheridan, Tait, Hodgson, Cueto and Cohen, Sale shouldn’t be completely written off. A hard-fought win for the home side is my prediction.

PREDICTION: Toulouse by 3. Bagarre Generale!

So there we have it. A tight-head props predictions for round one of the greatest tournament in world rugby. I certainly hope that by Monday morning I will appear sage-like and wise in the ways of world rugby.

Don’t be a stranger 라는 문장의 해석을 가지고 이틀동안 고민을 했는데 결국에는 Keep in touch와 똑같은 뜻이였다.

OTL

Dad turned 75 last Saturday and to celebrate we went to Woodinville for the afternoon. Here is a brief run-down:

Cuillin Hills- We like this winery so much that dad decided to join their new wine club. Wines are always good and their prices are really good too. Today we tried the new Dungeon Syrah – wow! I can see why last year’s sold so quickly. Great flavors and a nice long finish.

Senoj- They are open again after being closed for a few months. They’ve had to make some alterations to the tasting room and it was so new that you could literally still smell the new paint. (That didn’t do much for the nose of the wines unfortunately.) We tasted a brief line up and both really liked the whites. They are sold out of our favorite, the Riesling, but will have it again in a few months.

Darby- This is another one that we consistently love. He had several new releases: Chaos, Purple Haze (both are blends) and the wonderful Aunt Lee Syrah. This is the winery that I thank and/or blame for really getting me into Syrahs. I was just starting to like them when I tasted one of his. WOW. It blew me away. His Syrahs have been blowing me away ever since. His other wines are really good too – in fact, I bought a white for dad and a Purple Haze for me. Not a bad one in the line up. Oh, and Darby is a dog lover. He’s the only person all day that Vegas actually kissed. It kinda shocked me; Vegas doesn’t usually kiss strangers. Maybe Darby had some of the Syrah on his hands.

Patterson – I sound like a broken record, but this is another place that we absolutely love! It’s a father-son team for the most part and their wines are wonderful! The tasting room is always fun because they are so outgoing and down to earth. It was pretty crowded while we were there so we didn’t stay too long. Not to worry though, we’ll be back.

NW Totem Cellars Pouring for Homeward Pet Charity – Kate was pouring their wines and donating $10 a bottle and all tasting fees to the charity. In addition, they had a dog (Coco) with them that was up for adoption. He was ADORABLE, he looked like a Corgi mix of some kind and he was so happy to meet any and everyone. If I didn’t have two wild dogs of my own, I’d have adopted him. In fact, I am going to contact Homeward Pet to see if he’s still available and then try to find him a home with one of my friends. (Consider yourselves warned – ha!)

Gordon Brothers- We went here because they were right next-door to where NW Totem Cellars was pouring and because they sent over a dog biscuit for Vegas while we were there. Vegas doesn’t usually take food from people he doesn’t know but he loved this one – ate every bite! Oh, I should mention the wines too. As always, the wines here were great and the prices are great too. They have a Cab that I adore and is a steal! Love this place.

Sheridan Vineyard - This was one that I’ve been wanting to try for a while and boy, it was worth the wait! There is a non-refundable tasting fee, one of the few in Woodinville. However, the wines and the people are fantastic. The Cab Franc ROCKED! I’ll go back here again, even with the tasting fee.

Adams Bench – What a treat! This place is never open so when dad told me that they were open for a release party I was thrilled! They were pouring in a neat little barn on the property. It was a gorgeous day and the winery is in a very pretty little neighborhood filled with white picket fencing, seriously! The winemakers ( Tim and Erica Blue) were there pouring and couldn’t have been nicer. The new release, “Myth”, was fantastic. It was a blend of Cab Franc and Merlot…wow! I had to have a bottle. The other two were great too, a Cab and a Bordeaux Blend. Great wines, nice people and a beautiful setting. I have signed up for their mailing list and will try to get back there as often as possible. Honestly – a nice little find. Oh, and totally dog friendly too!

After spending the afternoon on Woodinville, we went to Daniel’s Broiler (Bellevue) for his birthday dinner. This is our second year in a row to dine here and I swore last year that I’d had the best steak of my life. But I swear…this year’s was even better! It was damn near the size of half a cow, but I passed on eating any sides and managed to finish it all. I had the Bone-in Ribeye. Holy Cow (pun intended) it was fantastic. I wish I’d have taken a picture of it. This picture is one I found online…it’s pretty close. I need to start a new routine…if I’m going to write about it, I should photograph it too. The steak I had would have made a prettier picture. Along with our steaks, dad and I enjoyed a wonderful bottle of 2000 Clos de Betz. I bought it for Father’s Day 5-6 years ago now and it made the perfect pairing with our meals.
