I never realized how talky Mister Peabody and Sherman cartoons were until now. Makes it easy to replace the original dialogue with dialogue of your own, if you’re a talented voice artist. I must have learned a lot of history from these cartoons.

Was out of the hospital this weekend and decided against going out of state (just wasn’t feeli

Was out of the hospital this weekend and decided against going out of state (just wasn’t feeling up to it) so I decided to stay in town and survey instead. I ended up walking 12 miles for this survey-now I feel like outta state would’ve been a walk in the park! Still enjoyed it though!

Survey by number of individuals seen at one time.

As the light started to appear I decided to make a run to Sherman at its best time. There was frost on the ground and your breath in the air as I walked over. There were no real highlights, all birds just normal. Results-

Sherman Marsh and Fields——7:15-7:45 am—–mostly sunny

Downy Woodpecker—1—average

Blue Jay—1—below average

Northern Mockingbird—1—average

Savannah Sparrow—3—average

Song Sparrow—4—slightly below average

Swamp Sparrow—2—slightly below average

Northern Cardinal—3—average

House Sparrow—10—above average

Savannah Sparrow

The average is dependent on own self-opinion from visits past at this time of year. Also, was only able to survey half of Sherman as the town was doing some work on the other.

My next stop of the morning was Ash Creek where I was able to record decent waterfowl numbers. The highlights were a very large, mixed-foraging flock and some nice Hooded Mergansers. Results-

Ash Creek Highlights—–10:10-11:10am—–mostly sunny

Canada Goose—1—way below average

Mute Swan—4—average

American Black Duck—15—average

Hooded Merganser—8—above average

‘Domestic Goose’—2—new for Ash Creek, never seen at this location

Double-crested Cormorant—2—just below average

Great Blue Heron—1—average (overall heron numbers below average)

Lesser Yellowlegs—4—above average

Ring-billed Gull—11—average

Herring Gull—7—slightly above average

Rock Pigeon—3—above average

Mourning Dove—3—slightly above average

Yellow-bellied Sapsucker—2—above average

Belted Kingfisher—1—average

Black-capped Chickadee—5—above average

American Robin—5—below average

Northern Mockingbird—1—average

Savannah Sparrow—2—above average (low numbers of this species for some reason at this location)

Song Sparrow—3—below average

American Goldfinch—3—average

House Finch—3—average

4 Hoodies and a Lesser Yellowlegs

One of the 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers present

Nice, stable BD numbers

The average is dependent on own self-opinion from visits past at this time of year. Heron numbers seemed low-I think Black-crowned Nigh-Heron was missing……..?

After Ash Creek I made a quick visit to Jenning’s Beach. 3 Nice Horned Grebes close to shore. Results-

Jenning’s Beach—–11:15-11:30—–mostly sunny

Horned Grebe—3

Ring-billed Gull—3

Herring Gull—2

The grebes were a nice surprise. Never birded Jenning’s for more than a month (this is a new spot for me-unlike the others) so there were no averages.

My last stop of the day was South Pine Creek. It was quiet at first but had a big influx of numbers at the end! Highlights were 2 hawk species, a Great Egret, and an huge sparrow flock. Results-

South Pine Creek—–11:40am-1:00pm—–mostly sunny

Double-crested Cormorant—2—average

Great Egret—1—average

Sharp-shinned Hawk—1—average

Red-tailed Hawk—1—average

Great Egret

The average is dependent on own self-opinion from visits past at this time of year. The area was absolutely devoid of ducks-and gulls-and house sparrows. Very odd…………

Late this morning I visited the last spot, the Audubon Larsen Sanctuary. Because of my CT Warbler on the last visit I had high hopes for this stop. Results-

CT Audubon, Larsen Sanctuary—–11:50-1:30pm—–Sunny

Mallard—20—above average

Golden-crowned Kinglet—2—average

American Robin—7—average

Cedar Waxwing—1—below average

White-throated Sparrow—1—below average

White-throated Sparrow, numbers of this bird seemed low during the Audubon survey

Mallard, one of the many present

The average is dependent on own self-opinion from visits past at this time of year. I feel like I missed a bunch of birds here but then again when I was present it seemed like the whole world was walking the trails! Could this be the whole reason-no, but I think some of it has to do with it.

A very nice two days for a survey. Saw some nice birds and was able to get out!

As always comments very welcome.

Recently, our aerial photographer got the chance to shoot the new Sherman Hospital as the sun was setting. The coming darkness brought out the interior lighting of the hospital, which gave it a new look that we hadn’t seen before. The shots turned out great, so we wanted to share them with you!

The new hospital opens on December 15th, just six short weeks from now. Be on the lookout for details on the December 6th Community Open House Celebration, in which we’ll celebrate the new hospital with food & drink and public tours.

I had to bring my daughter into the ER. She was very ill and was admitted. I definitely want to praise ER Dr. Bruckner first and foremost, who was very thorough in explaining what was happening and in explaining her diagnosis. Most importantly he was so caring and considerate. As for ER nurses Jim, Jan, Katrina, Karen S., Jenny and Jen – they were awesome in making my daughter feel as comfortable as possible and explaining everything they were going to do, step-by-step. They really showed their motherly warmth.

As for the pediatric floor, great praise and thanks to Dr. Hogg and Dr. Coker from Childrens. I can’t say enough about them! They were awesome. These physicians were very thorough in explaining the care they were providing to my daughter and were also so very caring. Most of all, they made my daughter feel comfortable. My thanks also to pediatric nurses Theresa, Rina, Michelle, Divine, Barb, and Lilian who took great pride in what they do at Sherman. These nurses really went out of their way to make sure my daughter Lexi felt relaxed and comfortable while during her stay at Sherman.

Room Service also did a great job every time I called to place Lexi’s order for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They were very patient and they knew what diet she was on and what she could and couldn’t have. I also have to give praise to the Ultrasound and Cat Scan departments. They too did an awesome job explaining the procedure and exactly what was going to be done.

I had felt it was important to recognize the staff above to know what they really do does make a difference in a patient’s life and experience at Sherman.

Thank You All and God Bless!

The charts below offer a fascinating view into the current state of antitrust litigation in large law firms and corporations. The first chart shows which law firms have the most open antitrust cases currently. Arnold and Porter is skewed high since it is handling the VISA antitrust litigation and many cases remain unconsolidated. The second chart shows companies involved in the most active antitrust matters, although if Samsung entities are combined, they would be #3. The last chart shows specific litigators (only partners in this case) who are very busy in the antitrust space. As a LawProspector subscriber, you would have access to all of the underlying data including contact information for every large law firm attorney (including emails) plus all of the key litigation dates for every case including opening/closing of discovery, expert report due dates and trial dates. We are currently running a one-time promotion of 90 days of LawProspector for $3499 with no long term contract required. The product is a must-own for litigation support sales teams.

Dr. Maciej Malinski is on the medical staff at Sherman Hospital. He has been kind enough to answer s

Dr. Maciej Malinski is on the medical staff at Sherman Hospital. He has been kind enough to answer some frequently asked questions related to maintaining a healthy heart. Look for additional articles in our popular Ask the Cardiologist series over the coming weeks.

Q: I was recently diagnosed as having severe atheroma in my aorta and descending coronary artery-what can be done about this? I’ve had 2 TIAs and feel like I’m a walking time bomb. Help! -Colleen

A: What you refer to is atheromatous plaque. Atheroma in the arterial vessel is an accumulation in the artery wall that is made up of various cells and cell debris containing lipids (cholesterol, and another fats), calcium and fibrous tissue. The process forming this pathological structure starts in young children, and all children older than 10 have them. It is an unhealthy condition, but it is present in all older humans.

As we age we develop more atheromatous plaques, and in some people the arteries (in the heart, brain, legs) become severely narrowed, and they become diseased. That is what we call cardiovascular disease (CVD). Depending on which organs are affected it can be called coronary artery disease (heart), TIA/stroke (neck or brain), or peripheral arterial disease (pelvis and legs).

That’s a lot of information to take in, so let’s back up a bit. TIA stands for transient ischemic attack. You can think of it as a mini-stroke in which all the symptoms are the same as a stroke, but they last for less than 24 hours. If the symptoms persist for longer than 24 hours, the TIA officially becomes a stroke.

Sometimes people also have large atheromatous plaques in the largest artery in the body, the aorta. When pieces of this plaque go to peripheral arteries they can ‘plug’ them causing small strokes/TIAs in the brain or kidney damage.

As you now know, we all have these plaques, so to a certain extent we are all loaded with “time bombs,” so to speak. But it turns out that not everybody develops the symptoms, and not at the same age. So far we can’t explain it, but most likely this depends on both our lifestyle and our genes.

The most effective approaches to reduce atheroma progression are:

reduction in saturated fat ( meat, cheese, milk ) intake

if indicated, treatment with cholesterol-lowering medications, especially ones known as statins

aerobic exercise

normalizing blood glucose levels

weight loss

if indicated, aspirin

As you see, help is available. The best option for you, Colleen, is to see your cardiovascular specialist if you’ve already had symptoms, which it sounds like you have. Thanks so much for your question!

Succes, Steven!

Dr. Maciej Malinski is on the medical staff at Sherman Hospital. He has been kind enough to answer some frequently asked questions related to maintaining a healthy heart. Look for additional heart information from Dr. Malinski in the coming weeks.

Q: What is periodontal disease? Is it related to the gums? Can it affect my heart?

Yes, periodontal disease (P.D.) is essentially a disease of the gums. Periodontitis is an infection of tooth-supporting tissues (gums), which is highly prevalent today. Studies have shown that P.D. is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and several other systemic diseases. Chronic periodontitis is thought to have an important systemic impact.

Periodontitis is associated with increased risk of systemic diseases driven by a persistent low-grade systemic inflammation. Current evidence suggests that periodontitis is associated with an increased likelihood of coronary heart disease (narrowing of the arterial vessels in the heart causing angina or heart attacks), and may influence the severity of diabetes. Intensive periodontal treatment reduces systemic inflammatory markers. Systolic blood pressure improves lipid profiles with subsequent changes in cardiovascular risk when compared to standard therapy.

Health education to encourage better oral health should be considered as part of current healthy lifestyle messages designed to reduce the increasing health burden of obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
