Barcelona advance to the last sixteen of the Champions League as group winners in a come from behind defeat of Dynamo Kiev.

Leo Messi’s eighty-eight minuet set piece strike was the difference between the sides on a freezing night in Kiev.

Inside the first minuet the Ukrainians secured a free kick just outside the box; on the left side. Andrei Shevchenko thundered a low strike into the six yard area; his shot was glanced on by Milevskiy, under Valdes and over the line. The locals were sent into raptures and the open structured stadium could not have been louder.

The early goal allowed for play to open up.  Barça sustained their signature poise in possession as the home team relied on counter attacks to take the ball from their half. Twelve minuets in Shovkovskiy’s short goal kick found Messi. He dribbled toward goal but the goalie down low to recover possession.

Barcelona held onto the ball as Dynamo appeared content to defend. Every time their attacks were stopped the Ukrainians kicked the ball back attempting to create the counter. Despite allowing shot after shot on target, Kiev kept the lead. Ibrahimovic and Messi have had few chances on goal as Barca struggled to release the strikers in the box.

Almost predictably, in the thirty-second minuet as the home fans’ whistles grew deafening,  Barça passed and walked effortlessly with the ball before Abidal advanced unmarked along the left, sending a pin-pointed low pass for Xavi to slide, and guide in.

This was Barcelona’s reward for their total domination.

In the final moments of the half, Milevskiy provided a rare spark of attack for Dynamo with a sprint along the right wing. His attempted cross was blocked by the glove on Pique’s hand. The defender received the first card of the match. But the resulting free kick was wasted as Shevchenko blasted at the feet of the wall.

Kiev threatened again in the fifty-third minuet with another Shevchenko free kick. His ball came from the left to the far post where Almeida sent a header goal ward. It missed to the right.

A beautiful run by Messi was stopped with the ball spilling to Xavi. He could not test the goal. The Ukrainian fans grew restless as they knew their side were eighteen minuets from exiting the competition. However the Catalan’s sideways passing and skilful back-heeling is too much for Dynamo.

The exhibitionism continued as Messi danced his way through the opposing defence. The run was ended by Mikhalik. An eighty-seventh minuet free kick was awarded twenty-five yards from goal. Messi curled the ball with his left foot. It reached over Shovkovskiy’s outstretched hand, kissing the crossbar and in.

Three minuets later Xavi released Messi again. He took the ball deep into the box but hit straight at the goal keeper. The man of the match showed some more skill before was forced to leave the pitch with a slight injury.

Dynamo will have to settle for domestic football for the rest of the season. Their fourth place in the group does not even merit a place in the Europa League. But  Barça advance to the last sixteen in the Champions League and will be seeded for the draw. With more performances like tonight they will be confident of  defending their title as European Champions.

Serata molto positiva per Inter e Fiorentina impegnate nella quarta giornata di Champions. I nerazzurri erano andati sotto con il punteggio a causa di Shevchenko, che con un tiro deviato sorpendeva Julio Cesar, hanno visto il baratro fino all’86, momento in cui, come spesso è accaduto in questa stagione, il Principe Milito ha dato la zampata vincente per il pareggio, dopo che la squadra aveva avuto delle buone occasioni per andare a rete con Balotelli ed Eto’o. Pochi minuti dopo Sneider segna su ribattuta del portiere Bogush su un tiro di Milito. Gol importantissimo perché non solo faceva tornare alla vittoria dopo oltre una nno i nerazzurri, ma assicurava anche il primato del girone grazie anche al pareggio tra Rubin Kazan e Barcellona. Serata altrettanto bella ed euforica per la Fiorentina che batte 5 a 2 il Debreceni e si avvicina sempre di più a una storica qualificazione. Primo tempo opaco della squadra di Prandelli che chiude il primo tempo sull’1-1 con i gol di Mutu di testa e di Rudolf. Ma nel secondo tempo la partita prende un’altra piega e i viola si scatenano. A segno Dainelli,Montolivo,Marchionni e il solito Giardino. Per il Debreceni secondo gol di Coulibaly. Di seguito tutti i risultati delle gare di ieri sera.

Att “göra en Shevchenko” innebär, inom fopbollen, att en spelare föregås av ett mycket gott rykte trots att nästan ingen har sett honom spela, för att sedan överträffa dessa rykten på en stor scen. Uttrycket (som ärligt talat förmodligen bara används av mig) stadsfästes i november 1997 då Andrej Shevchenko (well, duh!) gjorde ett vackert hattrick på Nou Camp när hans Dynamo Kiev slog Barcelona med 4-1 i en historisk stjärnsmäll. Nuförtiden är det svårare att göra en Shevchenko i och med att den som vill utan större problem kan ratta in fopboll från de mest obskyra delar av världen på sin pc. Men man kan med visst fog hävda att Andrej Arshavin gjorde en ganska OK Shevchenko i EM förra sommaren.

När nu Tatarstans stolthet Rubin Kazan åkte till Nou Camp och tvingade, inte lika överlägset men desto mer överraskande, Barcelonas cules (det är korrekt – deras fans benämner sig själva som rövhål) till tårar och dess ledning till krismöte är den uppenbara gemensamma nämnaren Sergej Rebrov, nu ungdomstränare i Rubin, då lekkamrat till Shevchenko. Eftersom även Unirea Urziceni, från en stad som inte är större än Norrtälje, piskade upp Rangers rejält tack vare inte mindre än tre självmål, så är det lite läge för ett temainlägg om hur rövarkapitalismen tog sig in i fopbollens finrum (med eller utan Svennis-koppling). För den uppenbara gemensamma nämnaren är egentligen inte alls Rebrov, utan svarta pengar.

Men det hinner vi inte med i dag. I dag hinner vi bara konstatera att den turkmeniske Kazan-tränaren Kurban Deniyev firade, får man anta, segern genom att på presskonferensen göra som han alltid gör. Mumla “Ära till Allah, vi vann”. Vilket han förmodligen är helt ensam om i Champions League. Och att det var länge sen en enda kväll producerade så många roliga fotbollsresultat. Fattas bara att CSKA tvålar till United i kväll också.

A FIFA sorteou hoje os confrontos da repescagem européia das eliminatórias para a Copa do Mundo de 2010, na África do Sul.

O equlíbrio deve dar a tônica destes enfrentamentos que decidem os últimos 4 europeus no Mundial da África.

A única superioridade incontestável é dos franceses sobre os irlandeses. Mas o estilo antagônico das duas seleções pode gerar muita dificuldade para os Les Blues.

Pra quem pensa que Portugal pegou uma molezinha sugiro que acompanhem os jogos da Bundesliga. A seleção bósnia conta com diversos bons jogadores como os meias Pjanic (Lyon), Salihovic (Hoffenheim) e Misimovic - atual campeão alemão pelo Wolfsburg. Sem falar na poderosa dupla de ataque formada pelo inseparável parceiro de Grafite no Wolfsburg, Edin Dzeko (vice artilheiro da Bundesliga na temporada passada e atual vice artilheiro das eliminatórias européias) e o letal Vedad Ibisevic que jogando pelo promovido Hoffenheim fez 19 gols só no primeiro turno – 17 jogos – do campeonato alemão da última temporada.

Grécia e Ucrânia é um confronto de seleções muito parecidas. Os gregos têm um esquema bem defensivo e no ataque apostam tudo na velocidade de Gekas (Larissa) – artilheiro da zona européia de classificação pra Copa – e nas bolas paradas de Karagounis (Panathinaikos). Os ucranianos também têm um esquema que prima pelo sistema defensivo e as ações ofensivas são concentradas na dupla do Dynamo de Kiev, Shevchenko e Milevskiy.

Já no confronto entre os ex soviéticos e os ex iugoslavos, vejo um leve favoritismo para os russos que possuem mais jogadores talentosos como Arshavin (Arsenal), Zhirkov (Chelsea), Bystrov (Zenit) e o jovem Dzagoev (CSKA Moscou), além do excelente goleiro Akinfeev (CSKA Moscou), pretendido por alguns dos grandes clubes europeus como Manchester United, Milan e Bayern de Munique. Mas os russos que se cuidem, a Eslovênia - mesmo sem nenhum grande craque – tem um time arrumadinho que sabe se defender bem e sai muito rápido nos contra ataques.

Meus palpites são que França, Rússia, Bósnia e Grécia chegarão ao Mundial da África, enquanto Portugal, Ucrânia, Eslovênia e Irlanda terão que assistir a Copa pela televisão.

Now then, I know what you’re asking. “This blog is mainly about Notts County and Celtic, why are you talking about Shevva?”

Normally you’d be right, but this week one of the most exciting opportunities of my life led to the above quote. I got to commentate on the match between the mighty Andorra and the Ukraine, and I loved it.

I don’t think 90mins has ever passed as quickly as it did on Wednesday. When I arrived at the studio an hour before kick off I was pretty much pissing myself in excitement, and trying not to shit myself in fear! Indeed, my bodily functions were my biggest concern as I set off from Nottingham, and minor details like team news were easy, but the image of soiled boxers was undoubtedly on my mind!

The game itself was pretty much as expected. A dogged Andorra performance in the first half was only spoiled by Shevchenko’s strike, and they could have scored twice themselves. Granted, both of these efforts were due to the Grobelaar-esque performance of the Ukrainian ‘keeper, but on another day they may have at least found themselves level.

The second half though was another matter. Some terrible defending (and terrible camerawork too) led to the second. A quick free kick on the hour put Gusev through one-one-one with the keeper, and he buried his chance. That led to a calamoutous last half hour, with the type of defending that would embarress any under 11s coach worth his salt.

By the time the final whistle blew, it was 6-0. I was out of breath, with a mouth as dry as the rear end of a badger.

But when I left that studio at 6.30 on Wednesday evening, my grin could probably be seen across the whole of Feltham, and that had nothing to do with the fact I was about to consume my entire body weight in cheeseburgers.

Football commentary for a living? I don’t think I could have found a more perfect job.

Messi celebra el seu primer gol de la Champions 2009/10

S’aconsegueix el liderat guanyant (2-0) al líder del grup (Dinamo), s’aconsegueix el liderat, marca l’estrella (Messi), l’altre crack (Ibra) fa l’assistència del segon a un jove de la pedrera (Pedro), i tot i així no estem contents. això és el que fa gran aquest Barça.

Golegi o guanyi per la mínima, l’entrenador no para d’exigir més als seus jugadors. I ahir s’hi va sumar l’afició, que tot i mostrar un excel·lent comportament tot el partit, va haver de marxar decebut de l’Estadi perquè l’equip no havia estat fi.

I és que quan les triangulacions Alves, Messi i Xavi no surten fins a la mitja hora de la primera meitat, és que alguna cosa falla. Ahir, la sort es va aliar amb el Barça. Els rebots i la mala fortuna del Dinamo van impedir que s’avancés al marcador. En canvi, una passada d’Iniesta (que tornava a la titularitat) massa fluixa, rebotava en un defensa i quedava morta perquè Messi, superant dos defenses, l’ajustés al pal curt (min. 25).

El Dinamo es va mostrar molt incisiu tot el partit, el rejovenit Shevchenko va fer treballar més de l’esperat Piqué i Puyol, però per unes coses o altres, no van poder materialitzar en gols la incomoditat que van crear a l’equip blaugrana.

En la segona meitat, el Barça va dominar més la pilota per evitar tants contraatacs ucraïnesos, però aquest domini no el va poder convertir en perill. I va haver de ser el suplent Pedro, aprofitant una assistència d’Ibrahimovic, qui amb un xut ajustadíssim al pal dret aconseguís donar la tranquil·litat necessària a falta de poc més d’un quart d’hora per acabar.

A destacar el suec, que va completar un dels millors partits amb la samarreta blaugrana, entrant molt en joc, i combinant amb facilitat amb tots els seus companys. Puyol i Abidal van fer un pas endavant en la línia defensiva, i Guardiola els va reconèixer la feina feta en la roda de premsa posterior al partit. Pedro, va tornar a desmuntrar perquè Guardiola li dóna tants minuts, i Xavi, tot i no ser tan regular com sempre, va tornar a oferir un recital de grans passades.

O Barcelona recebe hoje, no Camp Nou, o Dínamo de Kiev, da Ucrânia. O Barça, apesar de não ter Henry, terá suas principais estrelas, Lionel Messi e Zlatan Ibrahimovic, mas estes não são os principais personagens do jogo de hoje. Todos os holofotes estão virados para o experiente atacante do Dínamo, Shevchenko, que completa hoje 33 anos de idade.

Sheva comemorando um gol em sua primeira passagem pelo Milan

Toda a atenção que está voltada para o centroavante ex-Milan e Chelsea, não acontece, porém, por causa do seu aniversário. Há quase 12 anos, o até então jovem jogador ajudou o time de Kiev a derrotar o poderoso time, em 4 de novembro de 1997. A derrota foi decisiva para a eliminação do time espanhol, que acabou ficando em último no Grupo C, do qual o Dínamo foi o primeiro colocado. Naquela temporada o time ucraniano foi eliminado nas quartas de final da competição europeia.

Shevchenko marcou três gols naquela oportunidade, que é considerada, por muitos a grande reviravolta na história do time azul e branco. Na temporada seguinte, o time chegou às semifinais da mesma Liga dos Campeões e foi eliminado pelo Bayern de Munique, que foi derrotado pelo Manchester United.

Em seu primeiro jogo de volta ao Dínamo, Shevchenko marcou de pênalti

Depois das boas campanhas pelo Dínamo de Kiev, Sheva foi vendido por 26 milhões de euros para o Milan, clube pelo qual atuou de 1999 até 2006. Pelo clube milanista, o atacante se destacou muito e chegou a ser considerado o melhor jogador do mundo pela renomada revista France Football, em 2004. Naquele ano, porém, na eleição da Fifa para melhor do mundo, ele acabou ficando apenas na terceira colocação, atrás de Ronaldinho Gaúcho e Thierry Henry.

Em 2006, Shev se transferiu para o Chelsea. A transação foi considerada manobra de gênio do russo Roman Abramovich, dono do time inglês. Entretanto, ao chegar na Inglaterra, o artilheiro não conseguiu repetir as boas atuações da época do Milan e foi uma decepção no time azul, apesar de ter vencido um Campeonato Inglês em sua segunda temporada. Como não vinha bem, ele buscou retomar o futebol em um lugar conhecido e conseguiu ir de empréstimo para o Milan novamente. Em uma temporada em Milão, ele atuou em apenas 13 partidas, e não conseguiu brilhar. Ao término do contrato, retornou para o Chelsea, onde viu que não teria chances e ficou por apenas um jogo, até acertar sua volta ao time de Kiev.

Na partida da tarde de hoje, porém, Sheva busca marcar mais gols contra o Barcelona em seu estádio, e manter a liderança do Dínamo no grupo da Champions League.

Hoy llega al Camp Nou el temible Andrei Shevchenko, Balon de Oro en el 2004 y ganador de Champions League en el 2003.

Sin duda Sheva fue considerado en su momento el mejor jugador del mundo. Un niño de Chernobyl (cierto, su familia tuvo que abandonar su casa cuando tenia nueve años) que salio del legendario Dynamo de Kiev hacia el AC Milan y de ahi a la gloria.

Daba miedo ver a Sheva en el Milan, no erraba una. El año de Champions hizo 30 goles, que todavia hoy lo cuentan entre los cinco mayores goleadores de la competicion.

Recuerdo mi felicidad cuando supe que venia el AC en el 2005 a jugar en Soldier Field contra el Fire, porque crei que iba a ver al ucraniano. Pero al final, por esas cosas del futbol le dieron franco ese partido. Vimos a Rino Gatusso, a Pirlo, Maldini y Cafu, pero no al gran Sheva. Un par de años mas tarde llego a la ciudad como la gran atraccion del MLS All Stars Game y como la promesa del Chelsea de ese verano. No anoto ese dia y tampoco lo hizo mucho en sus dos temporadas en casa de Abramovich, que pago £31 millones por el. De hecho, en la Premiership no anoto mas de 5 goles por temporada.

Ahora vuelve al gran escenario, la Champions League, donde tantos goles ha marcado, de la mano de su primer equipo, el Dynamo. Con la cara rota, 33 años a cuestas y ya fuera del spotlight, Shevchenko llega a la casa del mejor equipo del mundo, sin nada que probar. Eso me da mas miedo.

El equipo de Chygrinsky sabían que tenían su última chance y, ante un rival modesto, no la desaprovecharon. Fue una previsible goleada que, no obstante, se desencadenó sobre el final. Y a puro penalti.

Yarmolenko (19m.), Milevsky (45m.) y los penaltis de Shevchenko (73m.), nuevamente Milevsky y Seleznyov (los dos últimos en tiempo adicionado) hicieron la diferencia en el tanteador.

El triunfo coloca a Ucrania en una posición expectante, con 14 puntos y a la espera que Inglaterra (21, con participación ideal en siete juegos) supere en cuatro días a Croacia (14), el máximo rival que tienen Sheva y compañía en su cruzada rumbo a Sudáfrica 2010.

The infamous summer transfer window is now well and truly shut. UEFA have told everyone to shut up and make do until January now. But are all the Premier League clubs sufficiently stocked?

Onto Chelsea, Everton and Fulham.

Chelsea

After changes in the backroom staff, Chelsea were looking to keep the on pitch personnel very much the same as last season. Perhaps one ‘marquee’ signing was expected but the board and new manager Carlo Ancelotti were keen to show faith in the current squad.

Ancelotti was most keen to bring in Andrea Pirlo from his former club Milan- but the Italian star wasn’t so keen. Instead, he had to settle for Russian wide man Yuri Zhirkov who will push Ashley Cole and Florent Malouda for starting positions.

Zhirkov was the only major signing of the summer. Ross Turnbull should be nothing more than a benchwarmer and emergency cover for Petr Cech. Daniel Sturridge’s decision to move to Stamford Bridge was something of a surprise. But with Andriy Shevchenko’s departure coinciding with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou expected to head to this year’s African Nations Cup in January, he could be given the chance to shine.

Everton

Joleon Lescott’s longwinded soap opera of a transfer eventually went through, despite David Moyes’ insistence that he would not sell. With Phil Jagielka also set to miss a sizeable chunk of the season, the centre of defence was in desperate need of replenishing.

After being linked with Phillipe Senderos and Richard Dunne, David Moyes eventually decided to join Tottenham in essentially pillaging Portsmouth’s squad to swoop for Sylvain Distin. Distin is just as competent a defender as Distin for a fraction of the price, and represents a fantastic deal for the Toffees.

Still feeling the need for defensive cover, Dutch international John Heitinga was snapped up from Atletico on deadline day. Diniyar Binyaletdinov provides Everton with the natural width that has been the lacking from their recent sides. He will not be looking to follow in the footsteps of released wide man Andy Van Der Meyde.

Fulham

They performed above and beyond what was expected of them last year, but if Roy Hodgson is to repeat the task, they needed to strengthen all round this summer. Past Andy Johnson, the side had little natural goal scoring talent. Danny Murphy was relied on too much in midfield. And continued question marks over Brede Hangeland’s future meant signing a new defender couldn’t be ruled out.

Hodgson managed to keep Hangeland and the majority of last season’s team together but seems to have opted for a conservative summer transfer policy. Jonathan Greening is an experienced, proficient box-to-box man, but is often a victim of his own versatility. Stephen Kelly is a sound right back who has been unlucky with injuries. He will push for a first team place.

Damien Duff looks like a player that has reached his plateau and is now entering the back end of his career, but will provide a creative focal point in addition to Danny Murphy. Bjorn Helge Riise could be a wildcard after Roy Hodgson used his extensive Scandinavian football knowledge to secure the signing of the Norwegian.
